Calories: What are they?

"Let's start with what a calorie is and how we know. How many calories of food contains a calorie is a unit of measure like an inch or a kilogram only instead of measuring length or wait a calorie measures energy. Technically a calorie is the amount of energy it takes to raise one gram of water by one degree celsius. Calories can be measured using something called a bomb calorie meter. Isn't that name. You might even have built a crude version of a bomb category meter in sixth grade science class. In broad strokes submerge in a bucket of water. And you put a thermometer in the water and then inside that submerged chamber you set something on fire. The heat generated by the combustion raises the temperature of the water in the bucket. And you can measure that with the thermometer. And then you can calculate the amount of energy or calories were in the thing that you said on fire so we used to use bomb calorimeters to calculate how many calories a given food contains these days. However it's much more common to estimate. The number of calories based on how much protein fat and carbohydrate food contains and those amounts can be determined through chemical analysis. Now when we're using the word calorie in relation to food by the way we are actually referring to kilocalories. Sometimes you'll see calories abbreviated as k cow. And that's what that refers to when we say that a food contains sixty calories. It really contains sixty thousand calories but all those zeros would be a pain to deal with. So just lop them off and believe me. This drives physicists. chemists absolutely nuts that. Why do we need to know how many calories food contains well when we they just food. We don't literally set it on fire in our stomachs but our bodies do release it's stored heat or energy and then we either use that energy to power our biological processes or if we've taken in more energy than we need we store it for future use if we habitually in more energy than we use we gain weight so we use calories as a guideline to determine how much food energy a person needs. We need enough to fuel growth and maintenance but not so much that we start storing a lot of fat there are calculators. I'm sure you've seen them. They can estimate your daily calorie needs taking into account your age sex height of activity level and then there are databases and labels to tell you how many calories are in foods however as james implies in his question. There are few problems with this system. First of all those calorie needs estimates. Can be way off. You can plug your details into an online calculator and be told that you use eighteen hundred and forty seven calories per day but look you need to take that number with a truckload of salt. Energy expenditure varies hugely from person to person. Even if you. And i are the exact same height weight age and sex and we do the exact same workout. You could burn four hundred calories more or less than i do. Every day and energy needs can also be affected by genetics body composition hormones drugs and a million other factors and moving targets and just to make the whole situation just a little bit more ridiculous. Those readouts on your treadmill peleton fit. Watch or diet tracker that. Tell you how many calories you burn doing. Various activities are only slightly more accurate than asking the magic eight ball. But wait. there's more calorie counts for foods are also not as reliable as you think those numbers that are listed in your calorie counting app represent average values foods so even if you are measuring or weighing your food with great precision well. This apple may be a little bit sweeter than average. That banana might be a little less ripe. This not might have a little bit more fat. Even for packaged and processed foods. The calorie count. That's shown on the nutrition. Facts label is just an average of variation of plus or minus. Ten percent of that value would not be at all surprising. Secondly those calorie counts are estimated using formulas that may or may not be one hundred percent reliable it was recently discovered for example but the standard formulas that were in use for most of the last hundred years. Were overestimating the amount of energy that we humans are great from nuts. More modern methods suggests that owens for example provide about twenty percent less energy or fewer calories than we previously thought

A Saner Mindset For Weight Loss

"Okay. So there's a typical pattern to weight loss. And if you've ever gone on a diet you've you've probably experienced it. Basically people lose weight for the first four to six months and then they hit a plateau and then slowly they start to regain some or all of the weight they lost and sometimes they end up heavier than they started. There are a lot of biological reasons. Why weight loss's hard and we talked about those in episode two of the skied but there are some things we can control to an extent and those are the strategies in mindset? We use when approaching weight loss. One problem is that a lot of weight loss strategy start like minded with fat cabbage soup diet or the Cayenne pepper diet. Yeah remember that Queen Bay or some other crazy fed diet like I wasn't planning to eat cabbage soup sue forever you know just until the weight came off but after about a month pizzas started to look real real good to me like whole pie. Good it's hard to be restrictive for a very long time. That's Gary Bennet. He's a psychology professor and obesity researcher at Duke University. And he told me there's research showing that people apple kind of rebound after being on a really strict diet even if that diets more bounce than what I did and naturally people start to move back into moderation and then sometimes that let's see goes into a little bit more consumption and then you know things get a little bit off track so what Gary and Jonni both tell their patients and this is take away number one things that are are not done for good in the name of weight management lead to temporary results. And that's not generally what people are looking for in other words keeping weight off long term. I'm only happens if you liked the lifestyle. Gets you to that weight so much so that you actually stick to it short term crash diets. They're really not sustainable. Unless you like the life you're living while you're losing your weight you're probably not going to keep living that way and as a consequence that weight that you lost we'll come back and it was that philosophical shift that led me to the practice. I suppose that I I run today. Which is focused not on particular body weight goals? It's it's not on the body mass index. It's not on particular diet but rather it's trying to work with patients as individuals to figure out the healthiest life. They honestly enjoy. So if you're looking to lose weight and you go to Yonis practice. The first thing he would tell you is to stop thinking about weight itself like that number on the scale. Just just don't worry about it. We don't aim people at any numbers whatsoever in our office as far as Pounds on a scale or body mass indices or body fat percentages or clothing sizes sizes. I think all of the numbers are risky risky because our bodies and our genes are all built differently plus our job demands are different. Our environments are different are caregiving responsibilities. Wants abilities are different and all of that can affect our weight loss efforts so aiming for a specific number can set a lot of up to fail that's why Yoni says takeaway number to forget goalwards instead. Focus on behavior goals the analogy. I'll use regularly in. My Office is one of school. So if you've got a kid in school you know that that Kid's best grade is going to be whatever grade. They get when they go to class do their homework and study their best but by no means does everybody trying their best in school. Get an a plus. That's not how it works. And so the goal setting needs to be around the going to class doing your homework and studying and also needs to be realistic. Yanni loves a good analogy analogy. And you're going to hear from him in this episode but in this case when he says doing your homework he means adopting healthy behaviors for example. He really recommends trying to cook at home or often as for Gary he gives his patients a simple list of changes they can choose from for instance. Stop sugary beverage. Consumption huge for most people reduce alcohol intake. No more than one drink per night ECHINACEA that's harder for me. Maybe you you know. Stop eating chips cookies and candy right this those three no fast food. Do you do like four or five of those and your. You'll get pretty close to that five hundred calorie deficit each day a calorie deficit. That just means you're taking in fewer calories and you burn and that's how you lose weight but the weight-loss isn't the focus here the idea. Is that making. These changes can make you healthier regardless of how much weight lose are even if you don't lose any weight at all in other words their goals worth pursuing in of themselves and they're less likely to make you obsessive of course changing. Our behavior is easier said than done and this gets us to take away number three. Don't try to overhaul your behavior all at once instead. Start Small and let those changes snowball when it comes to weight management specifically people are so keen to suddenly have a black belt that they forget to get a black belt. you start with a white belt and fall down a whole bunch. Dan Slowly slowly over time with a lot of repetition. You build a skill set and I think healthy living is the same and when people try to suddenly have a black belt without taking that time to build up to it you know. They usually struggle and stop for a lot of people. Union says a good place to start as to just figure figure out what you're eating. I think one of the first things a person can do just like they would be doing if they were unhappy with their bank balance at the end of every month trying to understand what their spending ending patterns look like would be a great first step and I think the same is true about eating patterns eating habits now I am a fan of using food. Diaries I realize is that it's not for everybody but doing it for a few weeks would be a very eye opening thing for a lot of people where people will be keeping track of what they're eating when they're eating how much they're eating now. Joni said food. Diaries are not for everyone. If you have a history of eating disorders or tend to become obsessive about counting calories stay stay away from them because the trigger you but if he can look at the data dispassionately without self judgment food tracking can help you get to know yourself and your habits. That's when you can start taking stock of what you may or may not be able to change for instance. Maybe there's a food you can cut back on a couple of years ago. I started tracking and and I quickly realized that I was poring about four hundred calories worth of creamer into my coffee every morning. That was really eye opening so I cut back and eventually we realized just a spoonful was enough but a lot of people do find tracking their food too tedious. Even carry does. That's why he tells his patients to track their goals calls instead. I once had a patient who just tracked every day. She got a day planner and just put a smiley face or a sad face on the day planner each day and if she thought she was doing doing pretty well hitting our goals at day she would have happy face if she wasn't she wrote a sad face and she's she did wonderfully and felt really good about our progress. And you know she would tell you I just look at the day. Planner Sir can figure out all the trends and there's another reason to focus on meeting smaller goals. They're actually achievable. So it sets you up to to be able to celebrate small victories. Gary Remembers one day when he walked into one of the health centers. You works at and one of his patients. Waived him over. This woman comes over and doc to DOC DOC DOC DOC and she was shaking this thing at me and I didn't know what was happening and I realized that she was shaking a pedometer. My faith and she was look at my steps. Look at my steps. I hit thirteen thousand thirteen thousand and then she immediately started vogue ing I mean. She dislikes all the model poses. And the whole thing and she's like look you how I lost some weight but I've still kept a Dachsie and I've got my Michelle Obama arms and just doing the whole thing and and so we sat and talked for they'll and she just followed these really simple goals one of the simple goals Gary likes to offer. His patients is brisk activity. This patient certainly embrace stat and accomplishing it. Capture motivated to keep going over time. You can work your way up to black belt level lifestyle changes if you want and what those are GonNa look different for different people. It could be cooking most of the food. You eat yourself or running a marathon or playing kickball with your kid after school. That's actually what my husband does Yoni says the key is to stick with the types of changes. You most enjoy

Lauren Vogel, bam here if you feel like you can't even consider consuming a candy bar without being confronted with its chlorine content. You're right. The same thing goes for just about every piece of packaged food you see in stores, plus every bottled canned or carton beverage a nutrition facts label depicts detailed info on the amounts of fat sugar. Sodium and more found inside. But while your favorite breakfast, cereals sodas and sandwich fixings are subject. This type of in-your-face transparency, you may have noticed that booze is typically off the hook residing behind fact labels. So what gives the answer lies in the powers that be while the food and Drug administration or FDA regulates the safety of you guessed it food, including non alcoholic beverages? It doesn't govern the alcohol industry that honor belongs to the alcohol and tobacco tax and trade bureau or TB an agency that doesn't require labeling while beer wine and spirits companies aren't league. Alie mandated to print, the nutritional info on their products. Consumer advocates have been calling for the TB to change that. And it has sort of in twenty thirteen the agency made nutrition labels optional for alcohol, but somehow, experts don't feel the move was bold enough Johns Hopkins public health researcher Sarah Blake told vox in two thousand fifteen many adults take in a tremendous amount of calories from alcohol, and they have no idea. She should know her work revealed that the average American regularly consumes four hundred calories a day from alcohol alone. A pint of PA contains about two hundred fifty calories a glass of red wine has about one hundred twenty five and a shot of liquor has about one hundred. The reasons behind the disparity in label requirements between the FDA and t t b goes back to prohibition when the ban on the production and distribution of alcohol in America came to an end congress passed the alcohol administration act of nineteen thirty five which eventually led to the establishment of the t b but its rules around labeling have historically been a bit. Messy substances. The people might be sensitive to, like, sulfites have to be labelled, but other ingredients, do not wines, contain fourteen percent, alcohol, or more have to display alcohol content while wines from seven to fourteen percent. Don't have to list, alcohol content, if they're considered light or table. Oh and wines with less than seven percent alcohol. Those aren't regulated by the TB at all. Those are under the jurisdiction of the FDA, and so they're required to display nutrition facts. Labels confusing. Isn't it? A few brands corona light, Guinness Heineken, and course, light do put calories and some nutrition information though. Not the ingredients on their bottles, or packaging, but it's typically very small print or hard to find you might even have to look on the bottom of the six pack to find it who looks their Bud Light on the other hand began voluntarily including obvious, leibels listing its beers calories fat carbohydrates and protein per serving, as well as other ingredients in February of two thousand nineteen since then and Heiser Bush's added similar labeling to some of its other Bud Light line beers, including Bud Light lime, Bud Light orange, and Bud Light lemon tea change is brewing though. At least in the beer industry industry leaders, including Anheuser Busch Miller Coors, Heineken USA constellation brand beer, division, North American breweries and craft brew lions which together produce more than eighty one percent of the volume of beer, sold in the United States have agreed to voluntarily displayed nutrition facts by twenty twenty. "It's okay, it's marshmallow meringue ice cream with lemon custard, swirl and buttery pipe pieces that is not a cleanser. We don't think I got an e buttery pipe pieces. I see them here. They are wholly macaroni, first of all this tastes like marshmallow meringue. I'm not even a lemon meringue 'person. This is like the best ice cream ever. Wow. Oh my God. That is so good. I would not normally think lemon ice cream, but this is not lemon ice cream. No, it's not very lemony. It's so mildly lemony chunks pie. Of course God. Wow. Wow. Wow. Okay. So when's your calories so you eat? That whole thing for four hundred calories, I'll do it. Oh, that was really good. That's I can't believe it's so decadent. How is it so light? Here's the thing. The the marshmallow meringue ice cream is so creamy and light and there's a little bit of Zing in that lemon swirl. But perfect and then the pie takes over the top, wow worth seeking out for sure. Okay. Next up. We're not just saying that because we love, Michael, even though we do love, Michael, triple berry, cobbler. Let's see what this stacking up to be the description here is strawberry and blueberry ice cream with a raspberry swirl and biscuit, crumbles. Wow. The biscuits. The best part got a big chunk of swirled excited. That's so Ferdie so that well. That's amazing now that I would throw a little bit of peanut butter. It's good alone. Oh my God. That would. So you me, how are they there is cream like as good as all the mixes are the ice cream itself is like velvety? So it's like light. But it's rich and this fiber in it, and protein had tackle that protein in it without a tasting protein. Right. Yum. Oh that blueberry. So like could taste the blueberry you taste the raspberry isn't raspberry. Right. Okay. So I tasted blue it's triple berry. What's that? They're very straw strawberry. Blueberry, raspberry, taste them? All. To Young's up way to go on lightning bake shop. I hope these are not temporary. Are they, they are there just for summer? Damn. Maybe we all go out and by them. Yeah. Maybe or you know what if you buy them they last awhile in the freezer to so they last for a couple of months, so get them throughout the summer, and then the last through the fall, maybe by an extra freezer to keep in your garage. Yeah. That's a tube cessive, okay, moving on. We're gonna stick with the enlightened theme and check out their brand new dairy free bars. Now I could not believe when I tried the dairy free pints my niece's vegan. So I'm always trying her vegan ice cream and a lot of the time, either it doesn't taste good, or it tastes good. Because it has nine hundred million calories, because it's made of nuts, solely, but its exact well, exactly. But these I think really hit it out of the park. I'm expecting them to be amazing. We're gonna try.

Luckily, she was like super open, and we were able to discuss how that's like good just not healthy, you know, inherently just as as the program, and that they all follow in the gym, especially, but that's something that with these ads will have you hungry as you are trying to fit a body type that like isn't even yours. Yeah. Or you're eating too much just for the sake of eating too much because that's what the app is saying I have friends who they're like, I need to eat twenty four hundred calories in a day in order to gain this muscle and do this and do that. And they're like stuff at way below that. I'm like, Honey, why are you eating like stop eating your uncomfortably full? And it's because this is like it's all about these external cues when really we wanna focus on how we're feeling like are we always know best. We. We are. Yeah. Where the boss of our bodies. We know how we feel in our body. And so it's really like tapping back into that. Yeah. I was going to add onto the whole BMI girl. We have art. We have a podcast, and we just had an episode last week about BMI and how it's very problematic, and it's like Bs. Doc about him. I stands for body mass index basically, and so it's like the relationship of your way to your height. But for a lot of black people like there's been studies show, especially black women. We have just more muscle mass have different distributions of like our muscle and our body fat. And so when they compared black women to white women when it came to like having the same BMI, the black woman had didn't have increased risk just because of like our composition. And so we we were just speaking yesterday at essence fasten we were saying how it's be ask. If you Google like wellness or like wellness woman, like a thin white woman. Right. And it's like we will never be that. And we don't wanna be that. Like, why are we why is that the ideal like everyone's body has to just like, you know, kind of like disappear in looked like that, you know, default body. Yeah. And if you're a little bit thicker, it's like your doctors, you gotta lose weight. You gotta lose weight. It's like, no I act. Don't to.

Is Your Calorie Counter Lying to You?

"Today's episode was suggested by listener James who called into the nutrition diva listener line with this question. Hey, Monica this ah, James. I was wondering if you could devote an episode. On calories, and what they are how they're measured and how we process them, even though they're just a measurement of food and not actual food and what a bomb Colorado or is. And all the problems with counting calories. So that would be awesome love to hear that. But cast. Thanks. Thanks for this. Great topic. James? So let's start with what a calorie is. And how we know. How many calories food contains a calorie is a unit of measure like an inch or a kilogram only instead of measuring length or wait a calorie measures energy, technically a calorie is the amount of energy it takes to raise one gram of water by one degree celsius. Calories can be measured using something called a bomb calorie meter, isn't that a fun name? So we used to use bomb calorimeters to calculate. How many calories given food contains these days? However, it's much more common to estimate the number of calories based on how much protein fat and carbohydrate food contains and those amounts can be determined through chemical analysis. Now when we're using the word calorie in relation to food, by the way, we are actually referring to kill calories. Sometimes you'll see calories abbreviated as k Cal. And that's what that refers to when we say that food contains sixty calories. It really contains sixty thousand calories, but although zeros would be a pain to deal with. So we just LOP them off. And believe me, this drives physicists and chemists. Absolutely nuts. But why do we need to know? How many calories food contains while when we digest food? We don't literally set it on fire in our stomachs, but our bodies do release it's stored heat or energy. And then we either use that energy to power our biological processes. Or if we've taken in more energy than we need. We store it for future use if we habitually taken more energy than we use we gain weight. So we use calories as a guide. Line to determine how much food energy a person needs. We need enough to fuel growth and maintenance, but not so much that we start storing a lot of fat. There are calculators. I'm sure you've seen them that can estimate your daily calorie needs taking into account, your age, sex, height inactivity level, and then there are databases and labels to tell you. How many calories are in various foods? However as James implies in his question. There are a few problems with this system. First of all those calorie needs estimates can be way off you can plug your details into an online calculator and be told that you use eighteen hundred forty seven calories per day. But look you need to take that number with a truck load of salt energy expenditure varies hugely from person to person. Even if you and I are the exact same height weight age and sex, and we do the exact same workout. You could burn four hundred calories more or less than I do every day and energy needs can also be affected by our diets genetics body. Position hormones drugs and a million other factors and moving targets and just to make the whole situation just a little bit more ridiculous. Those readouts on your treadmill peleton fit watch or diet tracker that tell you how many calories you burn doing various activities are only slightly more accurate than asking the magic eight ball. But wait. There's more calorie counts for foods are also not as reliable as you think those numbers that are listed in your calorie counting app represent average values for foods. So even if you are measuring or weighing your food with great precision. Well, this apple may be a little bit sweeter than average that banana might be a little less ripe. This not might have a little bit more fat even for packaged, and processed foods the calorie count that's shown on the nutrition facts label is just an average of variation of. Plus or minus ten percent of that value would not be at all surprising. Secondly, those calorie counts are estimated using formulas that may or may not be one hundred percent reliable. It was recently discovered, for example, that the standard formulas that were in use for most of the last hundred years where overestimating the amount of energy that we humans are able to liberate from nuts. More modern method suggests that almonds for example, provide about twenty percent less energy or fewer calories than we previously thought. And finally, our bodies are not bomb calorimeters like a campfire that might go out and leave a few unburned chunks of wood our bodies don't extract all the energy from our food, some unknown and variable amount of that energy will pass through us unabsorbed.

"Insulin levels and also skipping the meal, giving your first meal are you ran out of time ball listing? Nope. No. That's the way the rules. And I just honestly. I believe we follow rules in this podcast. And okay is it. Okay. If I use studies that are like modern, do you mind or do you want me to modern nineteen sixties? I'm joking that help get people to like think about maybe I shouldn't maybe race in my time damn famous from the sixties. Okay. Yeah. You ready? The time me. Tell me when to go. So I need to stay unequivocally that breakfast being the most important meal today is a full lie and that skipping face may actually be good for you. So there is some correlation between breakfast eaters, having a lower risk of things like conic, chronic disease. They weigh less, and some of the facts that you said, but as we know all correlation does not equal causation and a of these observational studies are just that. And so when they retested many of them in randomized control studies people skipping breakfast versus people eating MAC miss. It has no impact on weight, which is a lot of the reasons that people talk about eating breakfast that had actually like impacts your metabolism. In fact, some people say that kick starts your metabolism in the beginning of the day, which has been proven false. The other thought is that if you don't eat breakfast, you're going to eat more at lunch, which might be true. But they found that skipping breakfast can reduce your calorie intake by up to four hundred calories a day. So even if you're are eating a little bigger lunch. Overall. You're not compensate. For that. Now, you might have heard of this little trendy thing called intermittent fasting, except it's not just a trend. The study bears out that intimate to fasting has a method of where you fast for sixteen hours and then eat for eight and so most people are eating between lunch and dinner only and the evidence suggests that this method helps improve metabolic health and increases weight loss. And you've also probably heard that breakfast. Jumpstart your metabolism, which it does not eating a lot of food as soon as you wake up can also make people nauseous not for everyone. If you feel sick if you feel bad by not eating just do it. But stop telling us all of us non breakfast eaters that we have to other wise. We're not going to be healthy. Okay. Get over. Wow. Well plan. Maybe you just didn't have as much. Was the quote, okay? Get over. I want to talk about this. I'm not talking about losing weight. I'm talking about being healthy. You were talking a lot about this idea that eating breakfast makes you lose weight..

Probably a lot of that is kind of coming from the dressing so ask for the dressing on the side, and you can actually minimize some of the impact of the sodium and another great option. One of my this is what I always go for that Pinera is the pick to pick to go for. Because why would you not want a sandwich and soup? Well, I always do the sandwiches salad and you dip the sandwich to the go making. Making. That's That's good. something. That's something. Get excited about I go with the usually do the Mediterranean veggie sandwich for the half. And then the they have like a. Like a meta training. Qianwen kale salad. Also that I go for. But you know, you could go with the vegetarian black bean soup. You go for the Fuji apple salad of both really solid picks. And what's nice about the take to you get the sandwich? But you get that important to serving a vegetable and fruit kind of thing which a lot of us don't get as we go through today, especially as we go through a hectic day, like one of the things you're not thinking about as you're servings of fruits and vegetables. So by taking this option, you kind of forcing it on yourself, delicious wet, and it does in a delicious way. And look the other thing with this is what's nice about it? It's like automatic portion control. Because if you look at the calorie count on a lot of sandwiches, the whole sandwich might be seven hundred sixty calories, but you take that half sandwich. And now you're down under four hundred calories. The salad is not gonna add a ton. So you're in pretty good shape. Some of these sound I haven't been to Pinera in a while just because I don't live. I do. I I love it when whenever want. Just we can see the sheer joy like getting this love it of the of the grilled cheese effect. My my parents go all the time like they live by one. They had like there was like there was like a secret menu. Right. Like there used things you could order like chicken power salad kind of thing that wasn't on the menu. But they kind of knew what you're talking about. And it was like chicken and keen lawn. They had there was a breakfast sandwich. That I think that a lot of that has been exposed now. And they they realize things were so popular that they put them on the menu. But they do rotate this. This is a place where they do have a lot of seasonal option. So again, make sure.

"So those are sort of the big three, and they interlink at least the first to interlink so raising crops to feed them to animals so that we can eat animals is just vastly inefficient. And it's the same as, you know, the vast majority of what we eat doesn't go into gaining. The vast majority of what we eat. Sorry. Okay. The podcast. I know I'm very excited about that. I'm glad it's not live. The vast majority of what we eat goes into just allowing us to lead our lives, and that's true for farm animals as well. So the most efficient meters chicken, and yet it takes nine calories into a chicken to get one calorie backout explain that for people that are unfamiliar with how this whole thing works. Yeah. It makes intuitive sense. Right. So I weigh about one hundred and eighty five pounds if I do nothing, but lay in bed watching bad television. Not even moving I'm gonna burn like twenty four hundred calories every single what if you watch good television. Well, if it gets me excited adrenaline could little that up. I'm shouting at the television. If it sports eyecare who's gonna win or something. But I mean, basically metabolism remind metabolism is going to burn about twenty four hundred calories a day. And that's just busy logically. What I need just to keep my body going the same sort of thing is true for farm animals. The vast majority of the calories that you feed them, they need just to exist. And so that. It takes nine calories into chicken to get one calorie back out in the form of that animal's flesh. Sometimes the industry will do a mass to live weight conversion from mass delight wait, you can get to like two point two or something like that. But about half the calories in go into bones, and blood and feathers and other things that we don't eat. And then you really have to have dense calories to get that mass calorie out conversion what really matters is energy and energy out. We ate those crops directly you get nine calories instead of one calorie if you've done all those crops through a chicken, so that means nine times as much land nine times as much water nine times as much pesticide and urbicide nine times as much fossil fuel to power the combines. And then you're growing all of those crops, you're shipping those crops to feed mill your operating the feed mill you're shipping, the farm operating the farm shipping the animals to the slaughterhouse your operating the slaughterhouse just a vastly inefficient system the nine in one out vastly inefficient. And then you total all of the. Inefficiencies all of the extra stages of production all the gas guzzling pollution-spewing vehicles, all of the extra factories, and what you find is that a conservative estimate is that about thirteen point five percent. According to the United Nations about thirteen point five percent of all climate change is attributable to the meat industry. It's more than all transportation combined on a, and that's a that's a conservative estimate from what I understand. Right. I think in Cal spiracy. They said it was fifteen percent. I think it depends on how you run the numbers. But their team point five is pretty that's that's being conservative, and it still Trump's transportation, which is what we're all focused on. Yeah. And waist, which people are focused on. I mean food waste is forty percent of everything we grow throw away, and obviously that's bad. But this insolent early eight hundred.

He lost a lot of weight, get in better shape on nutritional journey together a fitness journey together. We are working on a movie or trying to find some more answers, but like what has been your answer towards being able to make progress recently because for a little while you're stuck. Cops are here. As soon as you ask, there may be a lot of noises on this podcast. We have a house full about seventy five kids like asked me what the secret was steroid rate coming in. For me, I didn't ask about any secrets 'cause I know that there are non, so yeah, yeah. For me, the bio hack the real change has been really focus in buckling down on the carnivore diet. For me, the carnivore diet seem to be where I found success and the more I go towards just red meat and water. The that I do for me. And so I buckled down and went more towards that, and I also kicked up. So I work out twice a day every day almost I do cardio once a day and I do weights usually once a day and switch up the body parts. And so I know that sounds like a lot for a lot of people, but I just really love having a relationship with the gym. Again, you know, I for longtime out of relationship with food now is something I'd visit six times a day now I'd rather visit the gym six times a day in the food once. So I eat like once a day, usually maybe twice, but usually the. Maybe maybe a small Schneck in here, something like that. The biggest key for me was like going down eating. I would say once a day and a snack is how I normally, and then sometimes it's twice a day and then like a little snack and by little snack, I just mean like usually under four hundred calories of something. Will you not get people sending us stuff all the time? You know, protein bars and p con butters cracked open a cold brew here caveman out to our boy Fletcher. Fletcher, mazes coffee, so good coffee. See, yeah, they're, they're homeys. So I think they're brothers the brothers. That sounds racist to say that the brothers. But anyway, you know, I think a lot of times, you know, we're getting sent these different. These different cool. I Keano things. So sometimes that plays into at a tiny guy sent me a killer way. He sent me Kito ice cream and it was really good, you know. So he's like, hey, I want you to try my Kito ice cream, eight things of Kito ice cream tau. They were gone in two days. That's grand. And that's just part of my diet. And so I can Sumed all that tests it out for everybody out there on Instagram that wants to know. And I'm like, hey, this stuff is pretty good. If you wanna try try once in a while now. See, I haven't had it since it's not that it's not good that I haven't had..

"Too many options not that weight watchers his bad weight watchers probably the most successful diet planets ever existed because it's helped so many fucking people lose weight but it has too many options in there and so many of those people as soon as they discontinue going in the meetings and some of the help and reinforcement they gain the weight back because they never really learned what people go xers zero points now and they have no idea what that means or what that is like a thousand points on like a real like eggs or awesome right like you should be in courage in people to have not like extra throwaway food eat as many as you want in ball it's a it's a weird diet and i think that it doesn't teach you about food and it doesn't teach you a good relationship with food at all teachers do associate food with points with numbers i think that's really a weird thing well well again failed more people in hell to wouldn't still be around it'd be the answer yeah it'd be well people are failing the diet though too because it's it's not i mean it's they do have a point system but that's just to get you away from trying to keep track of twenty four hundred calories and twenty seven fifty three it's another way i just try to keep the numbers low so that you don't have this crazy you know these crazy numbers to deal with you don't have to calculate as much right but if it fits your macro and some of those other diets flexible dieting they're actually not too much different than a i think the thing about weight watchers that's a good thing is the fact that they have meetings i think that you know we had kito meetings here at the gym and we'd probably have a bunch of people show up and be actually good to sit there and talk about nutrition with a bunch of people that's that's an interesting part of weight watchers i think support rupe from being some it's gone to rehab i know that the that really helps a lot people people definitely do need help and support group but as i was mentioning the.
