"We've got a great episode for you. Requested by Kimberly Brown on Patreon. She wanted an episode about rivers, so that's what we're doing. These are all about rivers around the world, and I think you'll have fun if you like geography based trivia today. Before we get to that, we have our geek out challenges for movies named four films in which a football game appears. For television two sitcoms in which a main character has died. For books, two titles by Nora Roberts. For music, 6 albums released in the 1980s. And for miscellaneous four actors who have played superheroes. All right, those are some fun warm up challenges for today. If you like this game, by the way, it's called geek out pop culture party. I think they make several different versions of geek out, but we played it at Christmas time this last year, and you have to outbid each other on how many you can name based on what it says on the card. So if somebody says, I can name 7 albums from the 80s, then somebody goes, I can name 8, and then they have to do it to get the card. And then when you collect like ten cards or whatever you want to do, you've won. But it's a fun one. It's a real conversational game, and it seems easier than it is. And then when you actually have to do it, you're like, oh no, how can I think of another thing? So check it out, geek out fun game. We're going to jump into ten questions and that bonus on rivers right now here. We go. All right, this is an episode. I think for the first time ever, all about rivers from around the world. Number one, what famous river passes through the capital City of London. Number one, what famous river passes through the capital City of London.

"The performance is a great very lucky with costing people who really boy into it. I saw recently with matt. Damon and ed norton when they went to the world series and obviously they're not gonna poker but they say that they interviewed him and they said it's like if someone tried to act someone at that table tried to act in hollywood movie. It wouldn't work and and they're not that good at the table because they don't do any things apoka pro has to do to make a profit at a very difficult game to do so they were very honest about it and i think knowing that you can see. They sort of had that in their head when they were making the movie. And the scripting compliment scripts and production second-to-none in my opinion absolutely well as it did mark the start of poker being depicted onscreen closer to the way it release it. Also maybe marked the end of to you. You rent a poker in the movies in time. Look you smart money. Ocean's eleven lock stock into smoking barrels and that awful stinker runner runner having seen the template of how. It's done better do they get it around in those movies. I mean runner runner is woefully bad. You know the the premise is quite good. You can understand. Why it was commissioned a movie if you into a hollywood producer now and that movie not been made they would probably make that movie pretty quickly because it sounds like a good idea but they just blow it. I mean ben. Affleck is shocking. Justin timberlake his terrible. It's really not a great movie for anyone. Involved and in time is awful. There are some old school poker movies. They're fun to watch the poco moment in there and say off those films. The worst is to minute scene in lock stock where they're just flinging cards each other very serious since she just throwing cards around a table and if that was your family it would be. You know that wasn't poker. No one thinks he's poke other than the four actors involved clearly been told be playing instead straight last. This is exactly how they do it all for the cards in like this. It looks moody over every single hand. It's awful arca cannot abide lock stock and two smoking companies or whatever but cowpokes national is terrible movies somehow got to make war on earth but a terrible even. I can do better than this friend of the show. Martin harris writes extensively about poker tv in his poker book poker in pop culture. His book is obviously..

"You're only making fucking sixty six thousand dollars a year. What the hell question. If you're in space and low gravity how do you. how do you have is intercourse. Pretty much impossible. I don't think they're up there fucking on the space station. I don't either but just think about that though. Is it impossible no prion. Why would it be impossible. I get yeah. I guess not. I'm just thinking about you. Know how there's propulsion and stuff that no. I don't think we've. I don't think we have artificial gravity. A i think there's concepts fired official gravity and it's making you like how the rings on halo they're like the you're walking on the inside of the ring because as it spins. It's creating that some typical force or whatever. Yeah that's so. The i watched a movie where they did that. They like made a space station like spin. Because then it makes me. Yeah we have. Is that fake. Or is that real. No i think that's a real concept that they're considering making force base station. Yeah i watched. This movie on. Netflix called Space movies you're going to get shit on them stowaway right there. It's called stoa came out. It came out this year. Flex recommended really really really really good It's it's wrenching 'cause isn't it about a us ship that can sustain like three people but then they find somebody was passed out in there. Yeah when they like went to launch off. My neighbor was telling me to watch that movie. He's good bra in. The ending is baller. Like it's a good movie. Seventy seven on rotten tomatoes. It's good it's only four actors the entire movie. Wow i love movies do that. They like can condense the act you know but it is. It's good if you're into space and is pretty realistic. But they do that artificial thing where they sent out this tether and then that tether wait spins the station super fast and it creates an artificial gravity Inside the station So where did you get the hoodie. Meyer now nasa. They they call me and they were like broken. You sport this hoodie for these you. To rep the nasa. The nasa no spacex nation. I like spacex. They're doing a lot of good stuff. Nasr's not even really a thing anymore. They kind of just they don't send things. Space may quit. They they taken funding away from it. Yeah we win the space race. Which is the dumbest thing we've done but luckily space x.'s. Stepping up the plate. Oh the private at privatizing Space travel i think. That's i think that's gonna go better than government privatize privatizing it. But the government can take it could also be bad but both the same with same with government. I think governments probably worse. Yes privatized. I think they should do it for the price. Company could be more like well. We're not doing that. Nasa has that rover on mars. Don't they that's as far as they're really sending people to space. no no..

Yeah and so Was it samborn moved to the west coast and created this amazing candy company that to this day donates. Lots of money to jewish profits. Now the people who had been around. I guess the marshmallow little duckie's had been around before him but he created a process that made it go much faster because i think that they had to make him like took them twenty seven hours to make them. So you know they make them in trays. They probably had to let them dry or something like that so he made the much faster but he actually won an award because he was able to this man after my own heart came up with some kind of patent for being able to stick stick in a lollipop. You know. oh yes. Not a euphemism. Well how did it. All pops made beforehand hand. You probably had to pour it out by hand and then you had to lay on the thing and you put the thing in there but now it was like another another way to do it well and so when we were kids the candy we liked the most was those fruit flavored lollipops that came in a ribbon and the teacher would just cut them out and hand them to the the kids you know and so they were either like a ribbon plastic. Yeah they still sell them like to have seen. That's probably his invention like the mass producing lollipops that can be given out. You know something like that and then came the dumb dumbs. So kate winslet fabulous actress subset because she knows at least four actors who were just hiding in the closet and don't wanna come out because they're afraid of their career and she wants the world to change to they can be gay and play whatever role they wanna play. "See right. And in the meantime, I've got one episode left of Fire Flag Lane. I love that. Isn't it crazy? Love it, And it's in that. What is it like for you? I mean, because so many of your books now our options. I don't know if this is a movie or serious has come out yet is fire flight Lane like the first one? It is. This is the first one that's actually made it to, you know, screen that people couldn't see. Wait. What does that feel like for you? You know it is It's a real actually, you know, it's It's a remarkable thing. I mean, I wrote the book. Gosh, 15 years ago, and so much of the book is drawn from my life. I am very much You know the Kate you know, taking care of her horse and riding the bus to school and you know all of that, and Let's just see it come alive is just amazing. And I think that all of the actors are amazing. But the four actors in particularly who played Kate and Cully, um you know, they're just I cried all through at this ocean nine and 12. I'm saving it because it's like something to look forward to. I mean, your book. I mean, I just peeled through it and we couldn't put it down. I'm like, Oh, now what do we do? Oh, it's a big book, and it's a big book. And then firefight lain started and I'm peeling to going through it too quick, And I'm like, I don't want to end it. But, you know, I think, Kathryn Hi goal is really done a great job and the men are gorgeous in it. Yeah, I've been getting a lot of texts and e mails about the man. I think I think my readers really like, Oh, they're beautiful. And but the friendship there about you know to, you know, neighbors on fire front lane. We just felt that when we fell in love with that's when we first met you and so even the clothes and the music. It's just such a fun run. It's fun and feel its field You feel and you have fun while you're watching it, and it's just I love women's friendships. And, you know, I think it's so nice. Um, even even if it weren't my book, I would be watching this because you know the complexity of this female relationship and the fact that it's the female relationship that is driving this bus. That's what You know the energy is about And it's this friendship. I think that feels totally real and deep and lasting. And you just don't see that on TV every day. No, you don't end over this many decades. It had to be like a 10 part Syriza to show it, but But sometimes you just want to kill telly. And you're like how my friends with you, You are the worst, you know, And But don't you have any about good friend? Times That's are almost like sisters. Yeah, And that's you know that. That's what Katherine Hi girl is doing so beautifully. The fact that Tully is both brash and broken on and you know, that's what's really important is, you know she does all these things that you wish you wouldn't do. But you still understand you know how broken she is because of her mother daughter relationship. Oh, it's just so good. So we're talking about Firefly Lane. It's on Netflix. You guys. It's so good. So your book came out last Tuesday. I think are very second. Um What? What does it feel like? We saw the big We saw your tweet or your Facebook post that you have the biggest billboard right now, in Times Square ever for a book. What is that feeling? I just I'm so sad that I'm not in New York and in person, right? Yeah. No, I mean anything. It's amazing. You know, it's like After you know, doing this for 30 years on this, you know sudden, overnight extra success. And it's really fun. Because because I have so much I guess, Um, time behind me that you know it's not going to turn my head. It's not going tol change what I do, but it is going to make for a really fun year. Yeah, and I just I'm so excited for people to be able to Nestle and cuddle up with your book. The four winds were talking with Kristen. I have questions about that. Because i i better after reading that note like okay. Well you know if he doesn't know what's going on. Should we expect the audience right. Have a pretty good quote. "four actors" Discussed on Brian's Daily Grind

"In my last episode. I talked about letting the reader breathe letting them experience the environment letting them experience everything. That's going on before you jump into action with this one. We're gonna talk about the exact opposite. We're not letting the reader experienced anything outside of the dialogue. that has happened in this piece. We've actually spent all of our time focusing on the emotion and the dialogue for this particular piece because it is set in an empty white space. Now you don't have to set your situation in an empty white space to capitalize on this trick but this one we did so taking everything out of the scene which means not telling the reader about which way the wind's blowing what color the walls are as their dirt on the ground. Is it hot as a humid by not telling the reader anything about the environment surrounding these characters. You allow your reader to focus strictly on those very important conversations. It's about tempering about knowing when to use what trick and if you have a very very important conversation especially one that is nuanced or that has a lot of emotion or detail into it. You may want to exclude the environment from that portion of your writing writing only the characters the emotions they experience the way that they look in particular in how they react is kind of important to keeping your readers. focus centered if in the middle of this conversation. I took you off to you about some graffiti that was written on the wall or a cat that jumped out of a trash can down the alley. It would really detract from the power that this scene has knowing when to add that and when not to add that is a little tricky so let me see by can help you out anytime. You're going to do action. You wanna make sure that you build up to that action like we talked about in the last episode but anytime you are dealing with nuance importance. Depth conversation or something that is critical to the story. You want to make sure that you are leaving that environment out. There is not really a real build up for that because the impact is here. This is where you want your reader's attention focused remember your reader is reading your book. They are lost in a world. But you are still there guide. Your job is to direct their attention from one thing to another. If this were going to be an action scene i would be directing your attention to all the craziness that is building up to this action scene. I would direct your attention to the environment. I would direct your attention to the way that other people are reacting to what is going on but this one. This is a very important conversation. My story so i have directed your attention to this and only this. I don't bring up anything else. Sometimes being able to focus your reader's attention is a masterful tool that you should use with this particular conversation. I tried to step in and show you. Fear and anger kind of mixed together with same as experiencing now. You don't have a lot of the surrounding story unless you've listened to the book but in this particular chapter he's gone to this crazy whirlwind and now he is this broken little child that is faced with a set of impossible options and consequences and he is being given the option to remove those problems from his life. A child is obviously going to say yes because they are not aware of the consequences that follow now when you do write a chapter or a portion of a chapter or a conversation like this you have to be aware that there are going to be consequences on the back end. If you don't follow through with those consequences your reader is going to get lost now. I don't show you those consequences in this chapter. Those consequences are echoed throughout the rest of the book. But because this conversation is so important it was beyond important for me to remind the reader that there are consequences that come from this one conversation right here now in the case of this book there's a lot of evil and a lot of heartache and our struggle that comes from the consequences of this one conversation so i don't really need to echo it in this chapter but if you are going to have a conversation that is this intense a conversation that is so intense that we are removing the environment. We're removing anything else except for our two actors or three or four actors. That are having that conversation. You need to remember to put those consequences later in the chapter later in the book or later in the story in general. Just don't forget about those consequences so to recap it is your job to direct your reader's attention. It is your job to focus on what is important and if you are riding a conversation that is important you must focus their attention solely on that conversation. There should not be outside influences. That will distract your reader unless they have a direct effect on what is being talked about. So don't worry about the environment. Don't worry about how the wind blows. The sun shines the can rattles down the street or the mouse that scurries along the alley wall focus on the conversation. You can describe things like what the characters wearing how they feel how. They posture themselves as they speak. Because body language is important. But don't worry about the external things also if you're writing a conversation that is of this caliber of importance. Then you need to make sure that you infuse the consequences of this conversation in the rest of the story. It's very very important because if you're not infusing it in the rest of the story or if this conversation that is super important doesn't have ramifications that spawned from it then. What really is the point of having that conversation in there now. There are always exceptions to these rules. There's always going to be someone out there that says but brian. What about this and brian. What about that. Or i have this very specific situation. That does this remember. This is a blanket teaching..

"Was in a cult once did I tell you that? No, I met this guy once gorgeous tan look just like Mickey Hargitay. We had coffee he gave me a pamphlet next thing. You know, I'm wearing a moment playing the tambourine jumping up and down at the airport. I love that Babette would be doing that goal. I think she would probably find the young men honky as Babette is want to do about mean I wouldn't just say that more a month would fit in with the Lords of Flatbush pretty dang easily. Yeah, just make his jacket leather and he Blends right in yeah. So the Lords of Flatbush was I mean you the first two people you mentioned who are in the movie you said AKA because I mean Sylvester Stallone Henry Winkler, I mean they went on to have huge. You know, they became the kind of actors that you know them for their characters, you know? Yeah, so but they started in this movie that is just eerily similar and purposely similar to what they let our went on to do which is so cool because I think a lot of everyone knows who's faster Stallone has everyone knows who the Fonz is but I don't think many people know what the Lords of Flatbush are. No, this one has been lost to time. Yeah. Yeah. Well, what what happens in this movie? Maybe a better question is during the time that people turned on cameras onto these four actors. What did they do off? Maybe that's another way to phrase it. I think that is a better phrasing. I saw this movie. I think Turner Classic Movies called this rambling and I don't disagree. So this movie is about group of four guys for Bros. They would definitely greasers. They're slick in their hair back with their cones just like you see on the movie Grease and they have Lords and scripti writing on the back of their jackets. Now the universe a Flatbush. I never heard anyone say Flatbush. Well, but I know what's up with that and this is not because I am from the East Coast this is because I'm very much not from the east coast and had to read about it is a neighborhood in Brooklyn. Yes, that never say that in the movie though. Do they know and this just Peaks my I should have this bee in my Bonnet about how people from New York think Midwestern saying I know I'm going to lead into it hard for this little being a bonnet rent here, but.
