MicroLEDs and more: Staring into the future of TVs (The 3:59, Ep. 520)

"Welcome to the three fifty nine. I'm Ben FOX Ruben. I'm Dave Katz? Meyer, just as LED TV screens are slowly moving their way into mainstream pricing. A new TV technology is making waves as the next beg as the next. Big thing. It's called micro LED and Samsung appears to be one of the the one leading the charge. What's micro alley? And why is it different? How is it different than LED? Well, so Mike Riley d first of all it's not available yet. Maybe a year. Maybe two your see the first ones for sale the consumers. It's basically think of scoreboard a big, you know, above like, the Dallas Cowboys stadium or whatever that's literally millions of LED's that make up the picture. So you'd think an LED is like that you're wrong, actually, LED TV's are having LCD plane in front of them. This is the real direct LED deal and picture quality benefits include supreme contrast, excellent color. All the great things that you'd expect from next generation TV tech. How is that different than oh, L E D isn't LED something like that? Yes. So LED, but the difference. The main difference is is one only is organic. Meaning that the the Eli's themselves are basis they can get a little bit degraded over time. So the the one of the big things with micro LED's that they can get brighter than LED as well. So you can pump in since they can't get grading pump a whole bunch more energy into them. They can be a lot brighter, and you can get the benefit of no burnin. So sometimes stream. Exactly. Sometimes only screens you leave a static image for really long time that can become kind of ghost image on the screen with micro LED that isn't an issue. No kidding. So how much of a big deal is micro LED because as was mentioned in a story that we wrote recently. This is the newest this is the first new TV technology to be commercialized in like a decade. Yeah. Longtime coming exactly and L E D LCD is still around. It makes the majority of teams out there, and oh LED is the new kind of kid on the block still a small minority of TV's lead right now, and Mike Riley is going to be, you know, the new kid on the block which brings again this extra picture quality without any some of the issues that already has. So that's the promise. The issue is making these things and making them small enough. Actually, the problem is getting those LED's to tiny. So Samson came out with a seventy five inch four K resolution micro LED TV at this year is just a prototype. Ryan, absolutely. That kinda shows that you know, it was one hundred forty six inches last year. So that the engineers shrunk down. I think it's a fifteen hundreds of a millimeter for the chip size of these little individual LED's things they have to they have to figure out a way to make it smaller. So are actually fitting people's houses, you need twenty three million odd individually of getting them into a seventy five inch size takes a lot of engineering. So Samsung also made news this week about their lineup of q LED's talked to me a little bit about that. And also explained to me what q Elliot's and where fits into this whole. I dunno rigmarole. It is rigmaroles just marketing Q Aleve, basically needs quantum dot LED. So it's just exactly like LCD TV's just like the ones we've had for decades. But they put some quantum dots in there. Now Samsung do quantum dots? Other manufacturers video do quantum dot related TV's as well. But the idea is better color better brightness. But it's still has a lot of the issues of the LED has including viewing angle lighter black levels. Blooming things like that. So again, micro LED early are direct LED technologies, whereas Q lead and standard LCD. Have this sort of a liquid crystal display layer that has some of these image quality issues. One of the interesting things about TV trends, these days is how much bigger just regular consumer TV's are got it was mentioned the Q LED lineup. For instance, they go up to what ninety eight inches something like that. Is this gonna slow down or stop at some point? Or is this what's convincing people to actually buy new just get just keep getting bigger. We're just gonna keep making them bigger. And you figure out where to put them in your house, the big growth right now is the large screen sizes Samson knows that for example, one of their big advantages over Oleg TV's may by g is that are available in fifty five and sixty five inch sizes mainly LCD TV's routinely up to seventy five eighty inches as you mentioned up to ninety eight so getting a standard queue lead, LCD, whatever you wanna call it television up to a really big screen size. Really, isn't that inexpensive, and you can get, you know, seventy five inch really good seventy five inch TV for eight hundred bucks now. So you the the prices are coming down to these large. TV's people are taking the small TV's move to another room taking their seventy five inches putting them in a living room. And that's kind of really the only growth area in television right now last thing that I wanted to get to see us. We haven't had you on since then so kind of wanted to jump into lower some of the most interesting things that you saw at the show. I thought the Rollerball TV from algae was probably the standout right hands down the coolest thing. So this is technology, which as you might know from curve screens can actually bend and roll. And the idea here is it just rolls up like a lamp shade. And if you see the video literally just is in this box, and it raises up out of this box. So there's no TV all of a sudden, there's a sixty five inch TV, they're really design amazing technology kind of you can see in five years every TV will do that assuming that they have led interesting. All right. If you want to read more about these stories, check them out on CNN. I'm Ben FOX, Ruben cats. Thanks for listening.

Samsung hypes new Micro LED screens: Is it just a gimmick?

"Interesting things that came up at CBS was Samsung. Introduce its first micro LED display. Yes, there is such thing as micro LED. And if you're not familiar with that. It's like a very. It's basically the LED, but it's very small and then. It's supposed to have some kind of a significant improvement over standard LED televisions? I it's. It's hard to say whether it's gonna like really take off. It could be just another one of those like gimmicks that that kind of get thrown into the television world, but it only time will tell but regardless. They. Showed it off at S. And they used a hundred and forty six inch

"That could possibly happen Zion. Williamson that Duke who struggled in a win overall orbit yesterday, by the way, Bruce Pearl. I think I just think that Bruce Pearl coach. And I think yesterday was the latest example of him doing that let me say this, you know. When I think of Duke Zion Williamson day Barrett is clearly the best player on duke's team. But Zahn Williamson as a monster. Six seven forty six inch vertical. Leap two hundred eighty pounds built like a chisel brick house is something special to behold, his boy handling skills. Still suspect to me he can pass. He definitely can jump out of the gym. Let's see what he can do whether or not he could shoot or something like that. Here's what I will tell you. That I have a concern about. I don't want. This man in Cleveland Cleveland is clearly trying to lose games. Cleveland clearly has no intention of winning basketball. You wanna call it? Take say is not taking or whatever fine. But I'm telling you, they wanna know damn basketball games. I don't even believe Kevin love is that hurt. I think they'd listen Kevin Lada y play you want to build a franchise going forward. If you the Cleveland Cavaliers, why would you play Kevin love? If you're smart, you should trade him other just should do Sunday started UCLA from the areas. But whatever you do don't wish Zion where it's an end of the Cleveland because ladies and gentlemen, it's not about as as not the fact that he's great and gifting and all that stuff. Of course, you want that from a number one overall pick. But if he ends up in Cleveland understand the magnitude of it all the real problem lies in the fact that he is the one person drawing comparisons to LeBron because of his physical prowess. He's so much bigger and stronger than everybody he's going against if he would have come out in a draft. And they drafted him in Cleveland. They would expect him to be LeBron. And I think that's a recipe for disaster for him. I think the best thing that can happen with Zairean Williamson is that he ends up anywhere, but Cleveland because anywhere else you'll just be a great talent. But in Cleveland, they'll be looking for you to be LeBron. And I don't think that's something that works for him. I really really don't it. Eight say ESPN, it's inundate seven to ninety seven. That's the other thing. I wanted to mention this ladies
