2021 College Basketball Bracketology With Jay Bilas

"Feels like you might be the busiest man in america right now. So thank you for making some time for me man. I appreciate it but busiest mannered. America's this is the best time of year. So i'm happy to be busy. Jay bilas is literally and figuratively towering. Figure in the world of college basketball so it is about nine forty five pm eastern on selection sunday. You've been on tv all day. I've seen you offering wisdom's. I've seen you gas bagging as you yourself from time and again i'm curious jay. How long does it take you to fill out your bracket while we have to do it in about two minutes one. We're on the air during this brattle. G selection show. So i it's sort of the the first thoughts that you have and and you wind up picking an upset or to In each region in the first couple of days. But then i wind up going pretty chalky after that and And then i'll i write an article called the more than five minute bracket where i think about it for more than a couple of minutes and And i don't do any better. So i'm not sure that my My first instincts aren't are just as good well. I'm glad to get you somewhere between the first and second drafts of history. Because i'm staring at an empty bracket you have hastily filled out yours and i want to get into this because we have the top four seeds gonzaga baylor illinois michigan their top lining the four geographic regions jay. That aren't really geographic regions this year. Because everybody's gonna be crammed into indianapolis in something that feels bubble like is there one team among those four top seeds. That seems feels the most vulnerable to you. Yeah michigan Because of isaiah livers You don't know what this stress reaction and his foot whether he's gonna play and if he does play whether he's going to be the same. I mean machines a good team without him but they're elite offensively with him Because of how skilled he is He's a good passer. Good cutter good square. He's a terrific scorer but without him I think there are a lot more beatable if you will And they have a different. I i do think they have somewhat of a difficult path. alabama is the to in their region and And i think alabama has got a very good chance to to reach a final four What's what's the best thing. I think bobby for the the big ten teams as they're out of the big ten now and they don't have to they don't have to beat each other up and they can go take a swing at somebody else. And i think they're all gonna like that. So i wanna get into the alabama thing. You just mentioned it. They're sitting right below michigan as the two seed and jay. I'm still staggered by. I guess the following collection of words second-seeded alabama versus fifteen seeded. Rick pitino and iona. So let's take the first half of that matchup. I people know alabama obviously as a football institution the football institution. What they know about their basketball team. Yeah alabama is is really talented and really good This year in basketball. Their coach nate. Oats is a math guy. He is an analytic sky. So last year they shot ton of threes. He believes in free throws open threes and layups and And so they're not a lot of mid range shots taken But this year. They're they're excellent defensively. That may be the best part of their team is. They can really guard their long armed and athletic on the wings. They've got a player named herbert jones. who has always been a really good defender. He's six eight He's really kind of a point guard at six eight and he does everything. He's kind of a triple double type player and defensive player of the year. In the league in the sec. And the player of the year in the league And i think he makes them different. So they're legit. They could have been a one seed worthy of it but because of how good baylor gonzaga have been they were they were locks and then And then how. How good michigan wound up being and then illinois. I don't think anybody would argue with those four is number one seeds but alabama was the clear Fifth overall so the other

1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens

"So my episode today. is about the nineteen eighty Mount Saint Helens eruption. So now, we weren't alive then even though we were not alive, then it was you know years until Jillian. Many years. Until we were born. We are in our. Mid Twenty. S. So we're very youthful. Yeah. We say what's a CD or whatever I don't know anything I couldn't even pretend to be a teenager because I have no idea went technology. Don T TIKTOK ON THE TIKTOK You know on the TIKTOK so. Nineteen Eighty Mount Saint Helens eruption has a lot of parallels to what's going on in the world today, but it's an interesting story. So to to start with for our non US friends and Non West Coast friends, I didn't know the details about this when I started researching it but Mount Saint Helen's which is known as a lot lot to the indigenous lets people and Lou wit. Luella cloud to the click a tat is an active stretch of Okano located in. Skamania. County. Washington in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States I. Apologize to the Washingtonians. If I pronounced Skamania county your Skamania county incorrectly. I'm sure I will get an email about this. Fifty miles eighty kilometers northeast of Portland Oregon Ninety, six miles or one hundred and fifty four kilometers south of Seattle Washington. So to get a sense of where Mount Saint Helen's is. If you're thinking of both Washington state and Oregon is roughly like. Square ish rectangular ish in shape with Washington, in the north and Oregon just below. Mount Saint Helen's is in the lower left quadrant of Washington state near the border of Oregon. and. She's roughly halfway between Portland, and the Portland Oregon and Olympia Washington, which is the Washington state capital. Okay. also relevant northeast of Mount. Saint Helen's is what's called Spirit Lake. And there's a bunch of little rivers and creeks in that area just due to like the geology of the area but almost directly north of the mountain is the north fork toodle river. River toodle or Poudel T. O. U. T.. L. E. Title River. So. Also? Mount Saint. Helen's takes its English name from the British diplomats. Lowered Saint Helen's is a friend of explorer George Vancouver who made a survey of the area in the late eighteenth century The volcano is located in the cascade range is part of the cascade volcanic arc, which is a segment of the Pacific Ring of fire that includes over one hundred and sixty active volcanoes and for the record before the explosion mount. Saint, Helen's stood at nine, thousand, six, hundred and eighty feet high. So. They knew it was part of the ring of the ring of Fire Okay Yeah Yeah So. They knew as part of the ring of fire. It had experienced some activity throughout recorded history but it. It remained dormant basically from its last period of activity in the eighteen, Forty S and eighteen fifties. So by one thousand, nine hundred had been more than one hundred years before there was any like really significant activity that includes ash like little burps and like any kind of flow or anything like that. So. At this point people were pretty complacent thinking nothing's going to happen anytime soon it's fine like it's a dormant volcano for all intents and purposes until we get to the spring of nineteen eighty. Okay. So, there were several small earthquakes beginning on March fifteenth of that year indicating that magma may have begun moving below the volcano also just as an f. y. we talked about natural disasters on episode sixty one which was called here I am rock. You like a hurricane I talked a little bit about that about volcanoes in that episode. So if you want to refresh your memory about the basics of what's in a volcano check that out episode sixty one, it's very good. Thank you. So on March Twentieth Three Forty Five PM Pacific Standard Time, which everything will be NPS T. Shallow magnitude four point two earthquake centered below the volcano's north flank signal the volcanoes return from one hundred, twenty three years of hibernation. A gradually building earthquake swarm saturated area seismographs, and started to climax at about noon on March twenty fifth reaching peak levels in the next two days including an earthquake registering five point one on the Richter scale. A total of one hundred and seventy four shocks of magnitude. Two point six greater were recorded during those two days. That's a lot. Yeah. So geologists in that area are like look is no not a great sign. Initially. There was no direct sign of eruption but small earthquake induced avalanches of snow and ice were reported from aerial observations. So this mountain is shaking and you know stuff is falling off. It's not it's not nothing. At twelve thirty, six PM on March twenty seventh phreatic eruptions which are explosions of steam caused by magma suddenly heating groundwater. So that's like a quick like spur. Of, like Ash and Steam K ejected and smashed rock from within the old summit crater. Excavating a new crater, two, hundred and fifty feet wide. And sending an ass column about seven thousand feet into the air. So you yeah, knock. Great. So by this date along, east trending fracture system had also developed across the summit area. So there's cracks forming in the summit. This was followed by more earthquake swarms in a series of explosions that said ash even higher above there. And most of this ash fell between three and twelve miles from its fendt. But some was carried hundred fifty miles south to bend Oregon or two hundred and eighty five miles east to spokane Washington. So the ash went pretty far and those who were like what the What is happening here? So? then. A second new crater and a blue flame were observed on March twenty ninth.

"This is a joy always for Bloomberg surveillance it is becoming a tunnel tradition is the chills service across New York in the Tom no one of six one of America we talked about a Harvard football the courses are Herbert football always on Bloomberg one of six one of seven Boston with their pregame analysis the coverage again three forty five PM on Saturday what a joy to speak to coach. Tim Murphy of Harvard football who will be surrounded this week road trip Paul. by the department of athletics the friends of armored football the Harvard alumni association the Harvard club of southern California the Harvard club of San Diego and a Harvard varsity club is the crimson ghost. you go how do you keep the LEDs coach Murphy focused is they go out to see you San Diego. well we just finished an early morning prices fell within the last thing is that a cell is we're not going on a vacation this is a business trip I take care of business to our focus we are focused we're ready to go I thank you. remember the hockey road trips or just something the road trips more construction in the sport so you get on air Harvard and you fly out there it's a huge moment for Harvard I guess twice in the last decades to go to San Diego and get it done in that heat and then that difference in foreign is for these kids how do they stay focused on the field what's the trick. I think the trick is that you know we take great pride we talk about being road warriors team that can go on the road now facing Hercynian and be successful one in one record we're really proud of is I'm not sure exactly what the number is but we hold the all time I read the record for winning road consecutive road games and it takes a little extra focus now it takes a lot of detail and it takes a lot of really mature kids. so coach tell us about the Harvard team this year what can your fans see on the field expect to see on the field. well I always preface that question early when you haven't played the game by saying that you know we're a bit of a blank canvas and I say that in the context of you know I'm like the patriots we graduate graduate out Tom Brady's every year and so you're breaking a lot of new guys then we graduated a school record thirty seniors last year while while there's a lot there's a lot of is a lot of positions that are wide open a lot of you know there's a lot of stuff we still have to get get accomplished in practice and now want to gain but the bottom line is that you know what happens every year and you have to make that transition selects the big one this year but we're excited about our team we got a lot of good young players we our relatively young football team I will be facing a team that obviously is is a little bit more well documented they've already played two games yeah so I think we know what we're getting into but I don't wear I'm bullish on this football team we got a lot of good young. the attitude has been phenomenal and and we're ready to apply a coach would you kick the ball off San Diego or have a weapon to receive the ball his name is Mister Armistead and he is better than good how do you defend against San Diego star Mister arms that that will bring the ball up field. well you know a twenty two man game you got the Levin starters on offense and defense and and we always talk about everybody's got a doing their job you can't have a week blank he's an outstanding athlete they've got a lot of big play capability they got a quarterback who has done a tremendous job they've got a tremendous speed they've got weapons you know the the wide receiver obviously who is you know a preseason all American this is a very good football team it's a very good programming to put it in the context of you guys one twenty four consecutive league games they've been in the FCS division one playoffs for five consecutive years even though they've never beaten us this is a really how does the goal and wall groceries well turning its back from San Diego to the climbs of brown and Harvard and next week as well Tim Murphy beginning our coverage armor for pro we're so proud to do this huge interest we find each one for the idea of Ivy League football in a little bit different than the the the huge programs that are out there Tim Murphy of course harbor football coach you can catch San Diego harbor this

"WPN Petionville delta, the third hour, five forty five pm eastern, African American man is thrown in jail, is accuser bits. He made a buys on them kill him when he gets to jail. You hear TV's comes carried out. I don't know what you just said to me. Did either of you make to understand what the hang up on you there? The toll free number here is eight fifty five four fifty free. It's too bad. You know, if you actually have something to say get on the air and say it without putting a bunch of website, promos. You know, interspersing them through what you were saying, I couldn't make out heads or tails of what that guy was saying, no, no, no. Let's continue here. David in New Mexico. You're on free talk live. Go ahead. Just the more fun facts about. This is a case of told you before. But it's really really, really entertaining reading if anybody feels like it. Austere another factor too, with you in, we're I'm getting it from his New Mexico judicial standards commission of anybody's interested at even you Google that comes right up. And then you can see where they have lifted case after case after case of these New Mexico, legal professionals judges, and, and otherwise that had been sanctioned by the judicial standards than the supreme court and stuff may have the actual or they still have their jobs. Right. Well, some, some do and, and a lot of them don't a lot of them. Get suspended temporarily or permanently or they resigned or they're, they're just flat out the canned by the supreme court, but it this one case in particular, it's just it's just it could be a movie. So funny, the way the judges were stealing from this guy in particular. And this is the case of the judge Pamela DC myth in truth or consequences. New Mexico, and she's getting the consequences in it started out in twenty. Seventeen but for example, one of the funny things is judge did is what she was doing. She was stealing money from dead guy. And she happened to be the probate judge on the case, she was also wasn't. She was also the medical examiner deputy in that area, which is a conflict of interest, and one of the things that she did steal this guy's money is she, she needed to forge some papers in the case beyond what was actually legitimate in the file. And so the on a given evening around nine o'clock in the evening or so she texted the county clerk asking her when she was going to what time she's going to be in the office the next morning and the clerk texted back, like six thirty seven AM. And so the, the judge said that she would meet her at the at the corks there at seven AM she arrives. She arrived at the clerk, the clerk unlocks the door lets the judge in before hours and they and they're in the, the library of. The building and the court excuse herself. Go to go get coffee, then when she comes back the judges in the library anymore, the judges in the clerk private office, and apparently what had, what was going on, in there is the, this document that I'm reading that anybody can read says that the, the, the dead guy's family had was told by the clerk that there were ten pages in a in a file, that had to do with this case before that, that meeting that I just described and then after that meeting where the judge was found unauthorized in the clerk private office. It not there were now, thirteen pages in this file, that had originally came contained ten and upon clued, they're examining. And there were lots of clerical errors a procedural errors noticed in the way that the extra. Three pages had been created. In other words, they were look. They were looking like they were created by somebody who didn't ordinarily do those court clerk type duties. And so what the what the judge had done is it turns out, is, is the reason that she texted the clerk the night before it ask, what time she could come in to me with her was because he intended to a slip these extra three Fords documents into the file that authorized some of the money transferring that was going on illegally. But that's just one of the things that. Catcher because the, the clerk noticed her in her office, and it was like, what WT f you know what what's going on? Where that, that's one of the thing that's just part of the evidence against the, the bottom line is there's, there's many ways they caught her. The main way was that the family that actually existed of the dead guy that the, the judge Pamela Smith and her husband, Randy, the, the family that they were trying to pretend didn't exist found out that their brother, their local had died and the family knew all about his, his estate and knew that the new the nephew was supposed to get this, and that, and in, in his Bank account and all that stuff. And so they knew that, and then when they found out there died, and none of this had happened, they started going through the legal steps to gain control of the, the estate that their uncle had said that he was leaving to them. And then, and that's when they discovered all of these discrepancies, and how. The judge in her husband Smith had already cleaned out the Bank account. And, and I mean. The the gun. This woman to try to take money from a dead person out from underneath the, the family members who purportedly were supposed to receive. David. Thanks for sharing that story tonight. Let, of course, you know, for all, and he's got some good corrupt judge stories that he's called with over the years for all the corruption for all the busted corrupt judges. It's not like things have gotten any better, you know, suddenly, the government is any more honest, or anything like that. And they just replaced one bad judge with another one. This reminds tar and feathers. Great again. This reminds me why, why why a lot of people with money will basically give that money to their kids and family before the get to a point where they are about to die, and it's just so that to avoid the will legal process, all that, the whole legal it, and, yeah, the taxes in for variety of reasons. Yeah. And it's yeah. It's yeah. I mean, if you don't want your kids, fighting over the money. Over your their inheritance. Give it to them beforehand. So there's less to fight over later, which you ought to do in Venezuela for sure if you have any saving yes, so ever get rid of that, because you can well before you pass it on pass your fortunes onto your children before you die. You might wanna read King Lear that by Shakespeare. Oh King Lear divided his kingdom between his three children. And then the new and then they each in, in turn threw him out of, of his castle, wrangled up. Yeah. Of course. So we got more coming up here. You can share your thoughts with us remaining moments of free talk live, our imminence, our toll free number's eight, fifty five four fifty free. That's eight five five four five zero three seven three three and we're going to be doing an episode of free talk live a little bit later on tonight. It won't be immediately after the show. But if you stick around for probably the next half hour or so we'll start probably by ten thirty eastern time. I think a couple of things out to take care of before we do that. So he tuned that to.

"Four forty five pm eastern time or right after the president's remarks in Miami. So that's some of what's ahead today on C span radio and on C span television. Well, Republican Senator Lamar Alexander, chairman of the education committee spoke earlier this month about his plan to address the cost of higher education by simplifying the federal application form and student loan repayment plans and reducing institute. Regulations. He was at the American Enterprise Institute. Good afternoon everyone. Welcome to the American Enterprise Institute. It's a pleasure to have all of you here today for today's event agenda for higher education reform with Senator Lamar Alexander, a distinguished panelists. My name is Ryan Streeter. I'm the director of domestic policy studies here, and I get the pleasure of welcoming you here and introducing the Senator, and we're glad that you're here at this important time as many of you are where it's been over a decade since congress I passed the higher education act, which covers the federal government student aid programs, spill grant student loans and things like that. And in the time that's transpired a lot of things have changed in the in the higher education system in America and reform is overdue. And so we're looking forward to hearing from the Senator on his vision for this action in and for higher education going forward, more, generally. And I just want to let you know this event is being live streamed and video will be available immediately after we finish. So before we begin let me just ask you to take a moment to silence your cell phone as I introduced the Senator which I'm pleased to do. Lamar Alexander is the seventh generation Tennessean born and raised in Maryville, and he was elected twice as governor of Tennessee before serving in the Senate. And I remember these days we were talking earlier is a someone who has worked for governor and follows governors. I think that's one of the most interesting jobs in public policy, and you developed a reputation very early on for someone who vigorously preserved the sovereignty of states. Those powers that were not relegated to the constitution and very early on. Was well known as an advocate for a proponent of federalism in America, a reputation that he's continued onto the Senate to which he was elected in two thousand and two. He's twice. He's been like twice since that time and his colleagues have elected him three times as chairman of the Senate Republican conference today. Senator Alexander chairs the Senate help committee health education labor and pensions committee, and he also serves as the chairman of the Senate, energy and water development, appropriations subcommittee. Is record of public service goes back before he was governor assuming many of you know, that many of you may not he served as the president of the university of Tennessee..
