Whispers of trouble - listen to your plane

"If airplanes could talk what would they say? Well, they can talk if we learn how to listen and pay attention sometimes the languages subtle in a new sound or vibration. Sometimes they scream as when my friends number five cylinder unexpectedly dropped valve resulting in a broken piston, complete oil loss and prompt engine failure. Some sudden catastrophic failures are impossible to predict, but others can be predicted and possibly avoided. Ask pilots. A mental note of what our instruments usually indicate and look for deviations that could indicate A. OR PENDING FAILURE Just because the indication is still in the green range does not mean that nothing is wrong knowing the usual indications for our own engine will allow us to listen for any deviation and investigate the issue. I am fortunate and get to fly three hundred hours a year commuting to work as an emergency room physician. My Commute is from Statesboro Georgia to lagrange. One to two times each week, the fight one, hundred and seventy, two nautical miles and takes about seventy minutes each way in my highly modified North American navien. My engine was a continental I o five, fifty be that was freshly overhauled just a few years ago. I always change the oil between twenty five and thirty five hours instead of waiting until fifty hours. On two occasions, my engine instruments have displayed unusual oil pressure indications. The first indication was in June two, thousand sixteen during a return trip from New Mexico. The June weather was beautiful and via far but very hot all along the route home. During the flight the oil pressure ran about five to seven PSI lower than usual but otherwise acted normally oil temperature was less than two hundred degrees Fahrenheit for the entire flight. The engine ran great and continue to produce plenty of power I. nervously watched the pressure as it stayed steady in the green range and continued our trip home. The oil consumption remained as usual during that trip and we arrived home on eventually. Once home. The oil was changed in a new paper element oil filter installed prior to this oil change I was using a reusable stainless steel mesh oil filter that was removed and disassembled for inspection at each oil change. On Inspection, I found that the Steel Mesh had accumulated some residue that narrowed the openings in the Mesh. I, reasoned that the oil filter was restricting flow and oil pressure. So I returned to using paper element oil filter that is discarded at each oil change the oil pressure return to normal and I return to flying with my usual oil pressure of forty five to forty six PSI in cruise flight. That engine continued to run great and showed no problems. Regular oil filter cutting revealed no metal and oil analysis was always normal. So normal that I skipped cutting the filter and oil analysis when I changed the oil in December of twenty seventeen. I continued to fly Navien until late February twenty eighteen when something changed. I was flying to work and noticed my oil pressure was once again lower than. It was down into the Middle Thirties but once again remained in the green range and steady. I increased RPM from low cruise at two thousand, three hundred to hike cruise at two, thousand, five hundred and the oil pressure returned to the usual forty, five to forty, six PSI. The oil temperature was around one hundred and sixty degrees, Fahrenheit. which is the usual oil temp in cool weather for that engine. I was concerned about the oil pressure indication but I had seen this occurrence previously the weather was good and the pressure was backup to usual. So I continued on to lagrange. Three days later I returned home to Statesboro. Now comes the lucky and scary part. The flight home was night I F R and I flew the Runway three to approach into statesborough. Before departing I checked everything carefully and the oil pressure on run-up was normal. I watched the oil pressure carefully and flew home that high cruise power setting. I landed uneventfully but noticed that oil pressure at idol was a lot higher than usual. Low Minimum oil pressure at idol with the engine. Hot is ten PSI. But mine was always fifteen to twenty PSI. This night I was looking at thirty five PSI at idol with the engine hot. I had never seen idol oil pressure that high but was not concerned. I push the airplane into my home hanger and return the next morning to change the oil. The tachometer showed the engine had accumulated fourteen hundred and forty five hours since overhaul. Drained the oil and replace the oil filter and began refilling the crank case with fresh oil. When I decided, it was time to cut the oil filter. I found a large amount of metal in the filter. The oil that drained out of the filter was filled with metal flakes that look like silver glitter on my hand. What happened I had not cut the oil filter or submitted an oil sample at the last oil change. So there was no way of knowing what I would have found then. Had I, not cut an examined the oil filter on this oil change. I would not have found the metal in time and bad things would have happened on the next flight. When I disassembled the engine, I found the two of the main bearings had turned in the crank case, and we're obviously very near having a catastrophic failure. Now. This engine did not vibrate knock or suffering power loss. The only in-flight indication of any problem was changed from the usual oil pressure readings with the actual reading remaining in the normal range. As Buck my old flight instructor would have said she was talking to you. I was not listening carefully enough but survived just the same. This is the accident that never happened simply because I cut the oil filter. Had I, submitted the oil for analysis and waited for the results before flying again, the problem could have been discovered, but I fly too often to await test results. I would've received an urgent phone call from my oil analysis company, but it would have been after the accident. My current practice is to cut every oil filter at time of oil change cutting the oil filter while messy is free and gives immediate feedback. This simple process can save your airplane and your life.

Dorian Slams into Bahamas and Menaces Florida

"We begin with the breaking news. This hour hurricane dorian the massive deadly storm is now lashing the florida coast powerful winds whipping onshore conditions are getting worse with each passing hour and it is going to be hours upon hours and hours. This is from moments ago from melbourne beach. Florida mandatory evacuations are underway there. Let's show you the storm from the international space station a stunning picture three hundred miles wide right now winds up to one hundred and forty five miles an our the picture of the storms. I just tweeted by u._s. Astronaut onboard the space station so that is the i of dorian seen from space as that storm is essentially sleet stationary moving so slowly ravaging the bahamas which it has been doing us since it came ashore there as a category five storm thirty hours ago it it is the most powerful storm in known history to hit the bahamas decimating the islands. Thousands of homes and businesses are now gone. An entire island is without power tonight. It is way too early to have any sense of the death toll and to give you an idea of just how high the storm surge was what the united states could be looking. Eh you can see waves nearly reaching the second story of home. <hes> rescue crews are just starting the grim task of searching for signs of life among the piles of debris and it the scenes like this that has officials in florida pleading with people in evacuation zones. Were still there to get out of a team of reporters standing by from florida to the bahamas tonight. I want to begin with miguel marquez who is out front in vero beach florida gal. What are people eating the evacuation warnings yes and no there's most the people along. The coast here have evacuated along the way but this storm has been so slow. It's creeping so slowly towards us. We've had this same wind for most of the day to day that is south here at vero beach. We're on the barrier islands here. The sea has been quite rough about the same. We've gotten on some bands of wins but as you look north you can see it's sort of broken up is not quite as much wind and clouds on that end of it so you do. You have some people who are staying sort of coming here to watch see what's happening. Some people coming here to secure their homes before they get out. Most people say they they are. They are going to get out there waiting to see what's happening here. They're watching very closely. What's happening to the bahamas right now and they're all wondering when will make that right word. Turn will head north and if it doesn't if it wobbles toward shore people are concerned about that authorities saying look if you don't get out tonight by a two a._m. Tonight it will really start to come in <hes> in a very big strength here. If you don't get out before those winds hit forty five hours those those bridges to the mainland we'll be closed and you will have to ride it out here on the barrier islands aaron all right miguel marquez. Thank you very much. I wanna go as as miguel pointing. They're indicating getting down south. Just south of miguel stuart florida where brian todd is at this hour so <hes> brian <hes> you know as we understand it. You know it's sort of sitting there as it moves so slowly. What is happening conditions where you are conditions here. Erin are getting worse like they are. Mcgill is look at the storm surge here at this park in stuart stuart florida. The waves have been smacking up against the seawall here all day long. It has been getting worse and if you can see out here looks like a rain band another one of those outer rain bands is about to come in here. You're at seward. It's been like this all day. You'll get an really hasn't let up as far as the wind. The rain has come and gone with the wind has not let up and we are told that the wind is going to get much worse in the next say twelve hours or so here in stewart what also is a concern as you've got the confluence of three large bodies of water that have all been you know had the storm surge been bolstering them <hes> since i guess sunday <hes> where was in the bahamas that storm surge i has been affecting the atlantic ocean over here the indian river lagoon here and the saint louis river right over here. This is a confluence of those three bodies of water all of which have seen the storm surge really get stronger and that makes the flooding here the flooding danger here much worse in addition. We can tell you that right behind us. Here are barrier islands hutchinson island in jupiter island about thirty thousand. The people combined live on those islands. Some of them have gotten out there under mandatory evacuation orders but as you know even under mandatory evacuation they people cannot be forced from their homes. They are concerned though that the people who did not get off these islands are not going to be able to get help once the storm starts. They believe that they're not going to be able to get first responders to them. The bridges are going to be closed. Ridge is going to be too dangerous for first responders to pass over them and they're worried that people here in these barrier islands are going to get cut off for at least a couple of days erin all right brian todd. Thank you very much and let's get the latest now on doors path. Tom sater meteorologist is tracking the storm. So <hes> tom you know is <hes>. You know. You hear people saying well. Let's let's wait. Is it gonna wobble. Is it gonna turn. What is the forecast right now well. We're still hopeful that it's going to start to make that job to the north now and stay offshore but the the door is not closed on that yet the sun is setting and you can see it here in the visual imagery another harrowing night for those in the bahamas about seventy thousand of this northern islands three hundred hundred sixty thousand overall but they're without power communications probably without roofs we've heard of total decimation of homes and the inundation of heavy water and they're going to have a long night tonight it. It is stationary. It's not even moving one mile per hour now. We cover a lot of hurricanes and the c._n._n. Weather center typhoons and super typhoons of the pacific cyclones in the in the indian ocean. I've never seen one put on the brakes like this. Keep its power after traveling aaron. Seventeen hundred miles form barbados through is wobbling a little bit overnight last night. It went through what we call an eye wall replacement cycle. It can't sustain this energy so the eye wall opens up another band and then it contracts syndicates energy back but every time it does that those strong winds extend outward so the storm actually gets broader in its strength you you can see already some rain in the carolinas into florida. We've had some waterspouts. I wouldn't be surprised to see a tornado watch tonight or tomorrow for the eastern half of florida but but even when you get in freeport i mean this is only thirty two miles to the northeast of them. They have been getting a beating but they struck the strongest winds near the i. Maybe just away from them. I'm sure this has changed the coastline in the shape of it right now but what we're watching now of course the warnings have been extended north. Just south of jacksonville now watches her into the carolinas but coming up the second part of this show. I want to talk about the steering currents and what this means every ten fifteen twenty miles is critical. We we need to get that. Turn to the north and i think we may have something that's going to help us out and share it with you in just a little bit all right. Thank you very much. Tom is going to be back with us as we watch this and tom in a few minutes i wanna talk about four pierce one of the city's about to feel the impact a door and when you talk about these wide bands tom linda hudson you see her there the mayor of fort pierce here's joins me now. Live maher. I appreciate your time <hes> obviously the storm dangerously close to florida and so enormous that you have these impacts but so slow that you have some people saying well. I just wanna get a better sense of things. What is your biggest concern right now. Mayor i am concerned that people will not take it seriously we still even though it looks better for us. It's still going to be a serious effect on this area. The winds are going to be high and the storm surge is going to be high and we're concerned about flooding so and we're also wanting people to stay in their homes and not leave their homes until all the all clear so you know obviously you're going to have hurricane-force winds as you as you talk about the storm surge itself could be it could be incredibly deadly <hes>. Are you prepared right right now. Yes we are prepared and i will tell you that we've had lots of time to prepare. How many days have we had to prepare pair. So we feel really good about what we done and <hes> we're experienced at this and i know you can't prepare for every eventuality -ality but <hes> we have a great team that has had experience with matthew and experience with irma and we coordinate well within this county and and we've done the best we can with what we have and we're we're prepared so when darrow people you know who have not evacuated and we are you you know across florida where they're gonna be. Bridges are going to be closing down right. People are going to be stock and they could be stuck for days and if the storm <hes> you know you have a stationary storm like what's happening the bahamas it could be incredibly incredibly deadly <hes> for a loss of life. What is your message to people who have not yet heeded evacuation warnings so they shelter in place ace. They've made that choice and most of them should know the dangers. The dangerous are <hes> when the winds get above forty five miles per hour first responders cannot come and rescue them and so that message is always clear and <hes> we have seven hundred people in shelters right now who heated that message and in a vacuum but couldn't leave but a lot of people left a lot of people left friday saturday and sunday so <hes> the ones that are sheltering in place they know the risk a- and <hes> we're we're all in this together all right. Thank you very much more

These are terrible terrible books for your psyche. I still have nightmares about some of the stuff that was in these books, and I spent a decent amount of time because the audio books for the pillars of the earth, forty hours and fifty five minutes the world without end was forty five hours. Thirty two minutes. They are extremely engaging. Extremely well. Written and very interesting. And I think they did they did a series for pillars at the earth. And in McShane was in it, actually, which I couldn't even get through. Because I knew what was going to happen. I can't recommend these books. Honestly, like I said they're well written. But there is so much just evilness in these books that I just I can't I can't they still get. They literally give me nightmares. I still remember scenes from them. "You have a chance to go into Kaufman field. Take five swings off a batting machine with with a wooden bat and helmet, and if you can hit one out receiving tickets or wow, that crazy. I, I didn't know that that's that's the best promotion. I love the rose now. I'm like I even as a cardinals fan from eighty five. They had replay, we would've won the series, whatever. I'm saying what I'm saying still ended up payoff because they'll be one guy who spends forty five hours a week who's already good at baseball hunting this thing. And now actually one guy because that no one's gonna be able to pull the one guy, it'd be able to pull it off. Everyone will be happy, it's it becomes sportscenter moment. It's like the Anna makes. To give one guy seeing a half court shot. Truthfully, like you gave away like a minivan, but it's going to be watched and people are going to love them. It's a great, you know. So often in this business and you understand the NFL, there's so many bad PR moves that owners that coaches that players do in sports the NFL. Now those every correct even fine. The last five, six years. So it's nice to see a professional sports organization doing something about sports. Fun feels like a promotion in the seventies for the White Sox like marijuana had shorts on your like. That the disco demolition. Nice. Well, I mean, I would say I would say we know the guy who did my other things John. He's an he's Chicago radio personnel still. Right. Good dude, really good guy. He's, he loves me in Kirk. This is what I would say. I would love to see a promotion. I'm just saying this. For one gaming year report it somewhere in like late may early June. You gotta put a regular dude in your lineup somewhere in the field. This like go back to literally I coach little league. So my son is like playing the Liam. I this, this kid, this dude somewhere in the field at hope. He doesn't and hope yet. Just hope to the high heavens, you gotta run deep center maybe in the other two really good. You could are shallower like yes, really center and he's behind second. I would love that. Here's my idea for the royals. Do you remember years ago you may not remember? I will look this up the warm. He can look it up Brennan. Look it up a woman who got drunk in the foul, Nick Kaufman and Kaufman standing woman who got drunk in a fountain at Kaufman field, and she was not into the fountain out there. She was drunk. She went in the found. They're like, you gotta come out obser- try to get there like chasing valley and any hill sketchy. He's got one of those giant with a huge strong. "Was a few years ago used to osha party now like like so many people it was so crowded it was crazy but if you're able to remove yourself from that that that annoyance it has to feel good that you find like to me the biggest thing about you and your crew was i always felt like you were under appreciated i always felt like people could not give you the respect you deserve because of the jones losses even though that you were beating everyone else it has to feel like okay finally i'm vindicated finally i have been validated right i told you guys on i told everybody on saturday that it just felt like the finally do something completely outside of that rivalry is probably the most satisfying thing you know because we really don't know what i would have come in heavyweight division if not for for king you know so it's good to kind of complete that portion of right journey no it's just a matter of of what happens next it was it feels good really it really does good compare the feeling when when dana white put the belt around your waist to the first time you became a champion one eightyseven was a big deal when you beat anthony johnson because you find the became a champion at something had is this one compare better it's unbelievable yeah this this one was the biggest it was almost like i was in shock and i don't know if maybe that was because of the result or because i was you know i'm the us heavyweight champion i don't know you know it's like sometimes you experience things that are so big that you truly can't comprehend them and i think that's what i'm feeling right now you know i i i don't know how i just did something so so so so big when you game plan for this you didn't think that you'd actually be able to knock them out that soon right like is that a shock in its own right you know i was i was i saw some openings you know and and we knew that you know that's why i wait you on forty five hours because in the midst of camp i was i was i was really putting it on news you haven't got a training partner and this guy told me that last time we fought it five and he said he goes it was always good since you always good but he goes i never felt anything he goes i had not on five times one training camp with some sort of strike and he's like this is a major 'cause you're gonna beat this dude and he was so confident in all by trade partners just for telling me how if i find the shot i was gonna put him out and and it happens i think those guys had a little more confidence in that result than i did but it happened that way they happened just a lot faster than i thought to delay bother you had on the flight the the spill at the press conference was that a factor at all you know it.

"I i think that the the key is in all of this because it's so fast and so quick is that you have to be careful like you you you could harm these players very easily and not just these players but amateurs i mean some of the things that people are asking people to do who sit in a dot an an office desk for you know forty five hours a week and then there in the cars so they're basically seated everything that needs to have motion and activation shut off uh and then we're trying to get them to increase their club it's me and i mean gosh i mean all the torque on the back of the wrist the knack so if i if i had my way um i was going to have people to be golf instructors to a certain extent you would be somewhat like k you go to teachers college in you can teach first graders and then you can move on to a masters and teach high school well if you want to teach and university you gotta have a phd and i think that uh i think that that that needs to be done because a lot of my friends in the sports world say golf has by far the most complex movement of any sport hand you know we're trying to create all these all this power and torque and tilt in rotation all that to hit a still object so we can really to an extent we can hyper define what that is where is like an baseball you know the second baseman he does side the side drills right so he can move sidetoside quick but he doesn't really know where the balls gonna be coming so he doesn't work dramatically on the same thing and the problem with.

"And it's limited if your small business however then you've got a lot more leeway all right and some of the problems we talked about with businesses to that was very interesting for example people i don't know what kind of an entity to do we're going to go over that and then cost and time people don't calculate cost and time of businesses that's cost of items cost of anything plus their time mark what how does that play into you're going to be talking about that well a lot of people decide hey i had a mechanic one time the aci he decided he was going to open up his own business i was paying them about mm on a good year he'd make about eighty thousand a year k he would simply take it home i take taxes at i do everything all said and done he ended up failing in his own business but even at the best point he was making a little less than that after expenses but working even harder oh my god he was working probably seventy hours compared to forty five hours so that that's a lot of people by a business in all their doings buying a job and if you start calculating how much you made before hourly you'll find out oh man i just i screwed myself yeah a lot of people end up making more um so little money for all the time and let's say husband and wife for both working they don't cal kill a third time so they're saying well the business making this much but if they had to hire people to do what they do then they wouldn't be making any money so you've got to calculate that all in your time you have to calculate we do find that when we do business valuations that people who are small business says so props in south do not take that into account then they want to sell their business and when we said yeah and take that back out they find that exactly what he's being made three.
