"That he had towards Clinton's Daman obviously sleep persistent. How about some good news? How about an endangered bird making a recovery the the red cockaded woodpecker loose mostly in southeastern us? And it's been on the endangered species list for almost fifty years but now doing well enough that there's been talk of downgrading protections actions but as Molly Samuel of member station W. A. B. E. reports. There are concerns that this little bird isn't ready. It's still dark out when wildlife researchers. He's at Fort Stewart. Georgia start their day crickets and frogs chirp in Muggy early morning. The mosquitoes are terrible. The researchers are here to catch a few woodpeckers woodpeckers to tag them while technician Josh Wimberly says they creep up to the trees to catch the birds is they wake up on like people some of them sleep leabhar. Some of them are very lot fort. Stewart near. Savannah is the largest army installation east of the Mississippi. It's also home to a large population of red. cockaded woodpeckers living in its Longleaf pine forest the bird used to be pretty common but has been endangered for decades actually they were considered endangered before the endangered species. ABC's act was passed. Larry Carlisle is a wildlife biologist. At Fort Stewart he says the red cockaded Woodpecker was one of the first species to be listed as endangered the woods. They they live in the LONGLEAF. Pine forests to the southeast were rapidly disappearing because of logging development in wildfire suppression. People recognize that. If we lost all of you're mature Longleaf forest and we'd lose the cockaded Woodpecker along with Carlisle watches as wimberly heads quietly into the woods to catch a woodpecker. And so he's just putting a net that's mounted on telescoping pole up over the cavity. The cavity is the whole. Where the woodpeckers sleeping each bird has its own cavity in in its own tree always got one already Fort Stewart has done a good job helping bring these woodpeckers back? The numbers are actually high enough that they catch red cockaded woodpeckers here at Fort Stewart and move them to other places that need help building up their populations of the endangered birds the researchers put ide- bans on the birds. They've caught this is a heck actually your mail as you can see by the dot on the top of his head and these are tiny little black and white woodpeckers. The adult males have red feathers on the sides of their heads. That's the red cockaded that their name refers to the young bird pecks wimberly's hands between at squawks typical this morning. So what's gone right at Fort Stewart. It's something that works across their range. Red cockaded woodpeckers need to things fire and artificial cavities fire fire because that's what mature Longleaf pine forests need to stay healthy artificial cavities. Because right now there still aren't enough old pine trees for the woodpeckers to make their own cavities ladies so humans have to help by making special birdhouses for them Larry Carlisle. It's not rocket science. We we've known what the bird requires for a long time. You gotta they do is do it across most of its range this point. The woodpeckers recovery is seen as a success. That's according to Jeff Walters. He's behavioral ecologist. At Virginia Tech. People started bringing you fire back artificial. Cavities happened and now all of the major populations pretty much have increased now the US fish and Wildlife Service is considering changing the status of the red cockaded Woodpecker from endangered down to threaten. Or maybe even taking it off the list entirely the agency wouldn't consent sent to an interview for this story but sent a statement that partially says quote the fact that we were able to consider reclassifying. The woodpecker is a major accomplishment for conservation nation. And while it is an accomplishment some are concerned that changing the woodpecker status now is a bad idea the red cockaded woodpecker is still working on recovering. It's still being managed. Ramona McGee is an attorney at the southern environmental law center she says. The woodpeckers can't survive without those two important things controlled burns and artificial. Cavities it still reliant on those conservation measures that the fish and Wildlife Service state agencies the military all these stakeholders. I have been doing for years. McGee says she's concerned about switching the bird from endangered to threatened that's because the trump administration has changed regulations related to the endangered species. ABC's act including changes to threaten species. That going forward could leave the birds less protected. Mickey also says if the federal government stops protecting the birds some states hits including Georgia say they can't afford to keep up conservation measures. long-term the states are strapped for money. And they don't have the resources to do this. Sort of management that's required for red cockaded woodpeckers on their own a spokesman for fish and wildlife says many of the agencies partners have said they will keep doing the things the birds sneed later in the morning at Fort Stewart. Wildlife Technician Ryan Adamson prepares to climb a tree to insert one of those artificial. Cavities more use a chainsaw OUGHTA COULDA cube out of the tree and replace it with artificial bird boss. At Fort Stewart. They will continue burning no matter what happens to the Woodpecker. Status keeping the forest healthy with prescribed fires good for training to and they'll continue inserting cavities as long as the army installations natural resources plan calls for it once he's done with the artificial cavity back down on the ground Adamson and the other wildlife technicians laugh that they're building government housing for woodpeckers spoke who the scientists including Jeff Walter say they could live with the woodpecker being downlisted to threatened but only if humans keep helping if not. We'll be right back where we started from. Walter says a lot of people see red cockaded woodpeckers as a big conservation success story and it would be a shame for it to have.

"A feel for it. Like take it on a test drive pretty much. Well, a few days later a photo surfaced on US army what the fuck moments, which if you don't know it's one of those really popular Instagram pages where they highlight like soldiers will send them stuff to actually breaking a lot of military related news lately, they do they do. And so they on their Instagram page US army what the fuck moments showed what appeared to be one of raider brigades brand new jail TV's on its side in the aftermath of a rollover put open parts spilling onto the pavement. So, thankfully, nobody was injured in the rollover which again occurred at Fort Stewart in Georgia. I have to say my favorite part was we probably never would have heard anything about this. This. There would have been if it hadn't been for this like army Instagram page, 'cause you know, those bunch of soldiers stuck sitting around this flip vehicle who were like, oh, we gotta send this into those guys. It's not only that. But we also know that once this got out all those people the master drivers in senior listed were all sat down in office. And be like, okay who the fuck out that picture? Yeah. Have like trying to make it like an upset thing. Like, you don't know what people can get about the vehicle by breaking it down. You gotta be smarter. You're supposed to be the master drivers the leaders of this IMO west shut the fuck up this brand new vehicle should not slip in it. Flipped made. You don't listen people are gonna find a way to flip a vehicle you're sadly mistaken because thing comments this bad is going to June Booker might be at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Beck's what it looked like it was on perfectly flat terrain where it was like, I didn't see I mean, give somehow V courses where we've wild it out like almost done some pretty awful. Thanks those. But my favorite part too. Besides getting like released on US army what fuck moments is that the PR for it afterwards. Army reps went on to say, how smooth the J LTV is how much soldiers are enjoying driving. It apparently the bumps feel like you're just in a passenger car. I just I love that Beth. They're like, no, no, no. It's. Fine. It's really great vehicle for the one that flipped the fuck. Kate whenever I think of gosh, I think I I'm reminded that big Tom Callahan. He never sold a thousand brake pads Oshkosh. So that's that's first things first. But number two. I'm happy to see that. They're getting a new vehicle army because a home DS for those that have never driven a humvee. It is the roughest most uncomfortable ride you will ever experience in a vehicle. It's Cokie split at home too. I mean, you hit any little bump or anything, and there's just no suspension. And then we upgraded to these 'em ramps while while we were in Iraq to try to deter ideas from injuring our our soldiers and marines, and those things are just like super large, and they don't really handle that. Well, and they're they're also just clunky. So good on the army for upgrading to jail TV's. But I can't say that. I'm surprised that guys found a way to flip one already Kate. I'm sure as a field MP entire career. You had lots of experiences in shitty. Home big horse trading in those right? I bet you did. Yeah. Fezzan explosives driver too. So I went through the back in the worst. I've ever taken that. At the same instructor. I know we do did he say. You get task with the worst jobs, if you're the explosive driver because you got to go to the arm. You gotta go to like the munitions area to pick up the rounds. So everybody has to be at the range at like, four o'clock. Anyway, you gotta pick those rounds up at like two thirty in the morning. Yeah. Basically, I spent a lot of time in those vehicles. So not not very comfy. Not a good. Not a good time. So who knows hopefully, these at least hopefully these have Cup holders..
