11.20.18 Customers providing the customer service; Refinancing your car loan
My pleasure to welcome you to the Clark Howard show where it's all about that. While what are yours. I want you to learn ideas me so you can keep more of what you make. You know, there's a move you may be able to make that just that one move could line your pocket with hundreds of dollars every year. I'm gonna tell you all about it. Just a few minutes. I wanna talk right now about news of the weird. Who would ever thought of this? But a hot trend in corporate America is having customer no service handled by fellow customers. So if you have a question or problem or whatever with a company's product or service. And you do it chat. The chat may well be with a fellow customer. A number of companies now. Are using customers as the experts and paying them dancer questions. And finding that they're getting much better results. From having customer service provided by fellow customers. Then by the call center, kind of things that companies have do the work for them. Now, there's so much to say about this. I don't know where to start. First things first. It tells you how. The customer. No service numbers you call or not at all a quipped to provide real service to someone. They're not allowed to really solve problems. So most always third party. They are not given thority to actually fix a problem for someone and they're judged by how many calls they take how quickly they get people off the line and all the rest at these third party, call centers. No wonder people hate dealing with them. On the other hand when it comes to technical questions or things like that. Customers could be a much better source. And level of expertise available then talking or doing a chat or whatever with one of these outside, call center, kind of people, according to BusinessWeek several companies are not only saving money, but they have much higher customer satisfaction scores following in interaction having customers handle questions complaints. Whatever been having these outside centers. So some of the people doing it. Now Samsung Pinterest linked, Ian, using what are referred to as amateur experts and people you don't get paid a lot of money for doing interactions. It starts answering with somebody with chat a couple of bucks. But if you're someone who shows a real level of knowledge. Expertise, which the marketplace automatically sorts out. You can end up making potentially decent money doing this. And. Who knew who knew that you could be the expert who's able to generate income from doing it. The guests by business week is going to become much more common that you'll have an opportunity to be someone who is of helped others and actually get paid to do it. Kevin is with us on the car Howard show. Hello, kevin. Hi clark. How are you? I'm fine doing fine. So you are a saver. Due to the crash of years ago in my business dropping I'm basically starting over. So I'm trying it forty seven. I'm trying to make some choices. I can excel rate my savings over the next fifteen to twenty years. Right. And so you are someone who did suffer from the collapse of the economy last decade. Yes, sir. I had a business folks go, but I was I was never unemployed, but I was drastically underemployed working several part time jobs, which forced me to, you know, take from my retirement to meet my obligations, and and try to maintain my home during that time period before I was able to get a new career that business. It was once full-time now part time, and so I can supplement income of that. And with this new career came four one K and other you know, other retirement or investment options to generate some income. Well, I am so glad that things are turning up for you. And now, you're ready to save how many employees do you have? I don't have any employees. Now, the business that I have that was once employed. Several people now is just a small consulting business that I just run and work. By myself. Well, I gotta tell you that gives you such flexible low cost options for you to do exactly what you said and save for retirement, right? And I'm gonna give you two options to look at one of them is something known as the self-employed or so low 4._0._1._K, and you can put a huge amount of money into one and the administrative costs to have one or zero. You can go to any of the low cost companies. I have on my investment guide and openness, so low or self employed 4._0._1._K and go into the really really low cost choices to invest in in it, and you can do either a solo Roth for a one K rose so low traditional 4._0._1._K so either pre-tax where you get a tax deduction up front with taxes. Do when you do retire down the road or you can pay the? Tax hit up front and have the money flow to you and all its earnings tax, free and retirement that's option one. Let me interject. Okay. I I actually had a another full time job that I want. Yeah. The the consulting business is simply elm aside as as I need to or whatnot. So then I got the answer for that. Okay. Okay. It's the second one company rights to keep slapping money as much as you can into that 4._0._1._K with that employer. And if you have option of a Roth 4._0._1._K do that because the second thing you can do with your self employed income is you can do is set up a simplified employee pension, right? It allows you to put roughly one fourth of your earnings from your self employed work into a pretext, basically regular IRA, but it's called a set. Again. They're free to set up the paperwork to open one takes about a minute and a half and the same low cost companies on my investment guide. You can use dope in the setup and between the 4._0._1._K. The employer in the set you do with your self employed income you will be able to roll huge amounts of money into catch up for retirement. And I'm so glad you're back on your feet. Physial is with us on the Clark Howard show. Hi, how are you? Great. Thank you. You wanna talk about whether you're current home should be the best home for you to stay at. Yes. So actually, I'm looking for maybe like a couple of years, I might meet one more room than I have in the house. So I have a couple of options here. I can either added a room to my current residents or I can go out and buy an under house with the right number homes. So I found a couple of pounds and around one fifty about my mortgage onto our mortgage. So I wanna get your opinion on it. So you said one fifty above your current mortgage or one fifty about your. Fifty thousand that would be how much you'd have to borrow total. That would be adding to the own price off Mike how oh well. So there there are several things that are both financially related and those that are not making this decision. The neighborhood that you live in. I do you love it. And other house on the internet is not far away from this neighborhood. Some of the new big that I'm looking at is the rent houses in this story house with a nice house looking at our Twitter to have small law, but we have more area. But you know, right. So the first thing you already answered you do love the house, you're in is the neighborhood and even the further out area where you're looking at the alternative the other the other home, the your time about the two story is the general area on its way up down or sideways. I think it's going out on the house. I borrowed the neighborhood. I'm in I got like thirty forty thousand about price high Barton. So the AM looking into it also supplying up, I don't mean price. I mean, the feel of the neighborhood is that people taking more care of the houses than when you got in there people the lawns looking is good. Or better is when you bought in pretty much the same. Okay. Ventured other house chips, pretty nice, okay? Lot and I saw new houses building. So it's nice community. Okay. So then we come to the lifestyle part of this have you ever with through a project where an addition renovations being done to a home. No, I will tell you having been through it three times. It's not fun. Why I did it the second third time. I have no clue but it's not fun living through that project. And so you have to look at you're going to have four to eight months of disruption in your life in from wife style standpoint. Are you comfortable with that depends, actually like it healed here? So we had three plays a roof and do some work. So we had experienced that then ovation, but we not going to eight months that you're talking about right now the other aspect is that the cost of adding on per square foot is higher than the cost. Typically of what's sticks up building a home from scratch. So it will be more expensive than you might expect to add that square footage. But you can you should get estimates on it. It should be very specific. So really the money difference. You'll find is more a lifestyle decision for you to make. Then it's going to be dollars and sense. Also, like the interest rate have gone up. So the when I did then, you know, like the mortgage on it. I got like three point five. But when I go right now. Yeah. Right. So yes that is an expense. But how are you gonna fund? The addition to your home. I think financially good. Did. I write a check for the addition to have two years. So look into like doing it. Phase. I phase or okay. Be like, you know. All right. Well, with everything said in the fact that you're happy where you are. If you think you can live with the project of doing the renovation, I stay out on because it seems like you're really comfortable in that house. If you told me. This house is okay. I could take it or leave it. I'd leave it. I don't hear you saying that. And that's why it's probably best to stay an ad on unless you through bids. Find that the cost of doing the renovation is huge. Then you move life insurance isn't the most enjoyable thing to think about most people don't like thinking about dying. You're going on a cruise. Well, congratulations three night four nights seven night, ten fourteen how long five as the bombs. Well, I hope that it's a wonderful great experience. I'm gonna cruise that in joy yet. That's neat. You know? I I was somebody who did not enjoy cruises. I went on cruises long ago. And I have a son who was absolutely obsessed with cruises after the the hundredth anniversary of the sinking Titanic, which sounds completely counter intuitive. But I took him on a cruise, and we had a great time. And then we went on another one with the family now, we're going on another went, and when I pour oldest daughter works fulltime and can't go on any of these cruises with us. But we've had a really great experience all of us on it. How can I be of help? Well, I was wondering about travelers with. No because we have to play. On Fort Lauderdale. We're gonna fly Davis four. But just in case I would recommend for travel will travel insurance with a cruise is very important goes cruise. They don't care. Why you don't come? They're not going to give you money back. They keep your money. No matter what it is. You can have a terrible health story, you tell them you could have a horrible loss of somebody's life in your family. Cruise lands. Check their hearts at the port. They will not help you no matter what. So you gotta buy trip insurance. And usually it'll be about six cents on the dollar the value of the cruise. So how much what is your five night cruise? You're not gonna believe it was seventy dollars. So with that kind of price you're talking about about no money at all for crews insurance. Gosh, probably thirty some odd dollars. Yeah. There's a website out like few to compare policies at it's called insure my trip dot com. Okay. And if you go to ensure my trip they'll have a variety of policies, you can choose from and how long ago did you book your cruise two weeks ago? Okay. That's very important because when you look at policies a lot of them will not pay off for a medical issue, if they can in any way show, it was free existing if you failed by within depending on the policy ten or fourteen days, so get all over this. And check out what. Exclusion say have since. It's been a couple of weeks since you booked and again ensure my trip dot com is my favorite place for you to do that shopping. Joe let's see wing sneak in and ask Clark here. Sure Clark Craig road. And he says I'm in the market for a new flat screen TV. Do you have any advice on where I should look to get the best deal? My best advice to get the best deal is by a no name TV. Not so much the store you buy it at, but the you buy what's called a third level or white label TV brand that is a who knows? What branded is the reliability? The TV's has been so good across brands by cheap. Biggest screen size. You can fit in your house scrape to have you here on the Clark Howard show where it's about you learning ways to save more and spend less and don't let anyone ever rip you off. And you can follow me at Facebook dot com slash Clark. Howard. There is a simple opportunity to save money that most people don't know about in don't take advantage of. Is have explained in the past almost everybody buying a new or used car finances. It if they're taking out alone at the car dealer. The percent that are financing at the dealer is north of eighty percent and car dealers are offering a service they should get paid for. They can Mark up the loan depending on who the lender is from a couple of extra points to his highest the sky. A lot of people whose credit is kind of in the fuzzy middle. Let's say in the six hundred's end up paying very high interest rates for their vehicle loans. In fact, it's a huge source of profit for the car dealers because they may be able to wholesale the money at a very low single digit interest rate, but retail the loan to you in double digits. And so it creates an enormous opportunity for you, even after the fact is save money. Think about if you're a member of a credit union, and you don't really think about all the things the credit union can do for you one of the things credit union can do that's fantastic as refi your car loan and secrete unions do a big refi business, and it's all sliding scale interest rates based on your credit score. But it's not at all unusual for you to be able to save a lot of money. Here's an example from the Detroit Free Press. About a credit union. That does a big refinance thing for its members. The members come in with an average loan interest rate of fourteen and a half percent. So there's a credit union serving people who have that fuzzy middle kind of credit scores. They refinance them at an average interest rate of six point seven five percent. So think about that they come in the door paying fourteen and a half percent. They walk out the door paying six point seven five percent. Now that is a huge difference in what happens with your monthly bills each and every month going forward for people who have top tier credit scores. You would be shocked at how low the interest rates can go even with the increases in interest rates. We've seen from the Federal Reserve it made me possible for you to refi into an interest rate in the twos. Threes. So what does it cost a refi car loan, nothing usually, and so if you are a member of a credit union, and you never really thought about the whole car loan thing in your carrying alone. Go check and see if there is a deal they can make for you. It'll just save you money. The worst that happens is they say it's not going to be a deal for you the best that happens is you're saving money each and every month Jeremy's with us on the Clark Howard show. Hi, jeremy. Hi clark. Thanks for taking my question. Well, I'm glad to do. So you wanna talk credit cards. I knew so my question actually pertained to we use credit cards is a payment system, especially ones that give us good cashback rewards that are on rotating categories. And while you have more patience than I do. I gotta tell you. Jeremy, I can't my brain cannot process rotating categories of rewards. It took getting used to. And I will say that. I think you're for them back in the wallet card. I call them couch card 'cause we use this one card a long time ago to buy couch. And so I got I got an offer in the mail for ten percent cash back for certain categories. So I I definitely jumped on that. But my question is all these leave cards that use these categories. So my wife is kind of a Yang, and I'm the Yang and online payments here, and so she's in the apple sphere. So she would be using potentially Apple Pay and I would be Android pay. So the more frugal side there and my question is when you use alternative payment processors, maybe those payments or those charges are not going to be reflected as the correct category. And so my question is is if you use Apple Pay or Android pay when those charges go through are they gonna show up his Apple Pay your Android pay? Or are they gonna show up at a grocery chain where I get a certain amount cat. They'll show up at the chain. See with? With Apple Pay Android pay with. They both do is they create a safer payment environment because they're using far more sophisticated technology to transmit a payment than what the banks us with their credit cards. So it's a more secure platform when she pays with Apple Pay and you pay with Android pay. And all it is is the trans. It's the way the payment information transmitted to the store you're paying so it should have zero affect on you getting those reward bonuses in the rotating categories. Okay. Great. And you would know that if there was any problem, you'd know that right away. For statement would show that and you and you probably have to call customer, no service and get it credit into the right category. But I I've never heard of anybody having a problem where it did not properly migrate to the right category. Using Samsung pay Apple Pay Android pay who knows who else's pay. Okay. Well, great that enters my question. Then have a great day Andrea's with us on the Clark Howard show. Hello, andrea. How are you doing today? Good. I'm such a big fan. Thanks for taking my call. Sure. Was great to have you here. You have something that isn't as great as you'd like you have student loans to deal with I have learned. So here's my here's my drums. I've been out of school for two years just getting around to refinancing. Currently I am. Hurt trying but I have plans to go full time because of my income ta- debt ratio, you know, currently with my part time in crime. Do you need a cosigner on my loan? So I was wondering what your thoughts are should. I wait for though full trying to start refinancing, my income to debt ratio is not what it is now. Or should I take out, you know, 'cause I I had asked my parents if they would be willing to cosign, and and they were asking about like a temporary life insurance plan if I were not expecting to croak. But like if I get hit. They don't want to be stuck with them. If you the. We're just wondering what your take on all that. Or so let's go back step. Andrea your loans that you have that you've had since you got out two years ago. They federal or private. They're mostly federal I have about maybe eighteen thousand private and how much total in federal would you guess? Okay. Don't cringe too much, but it's about seventy eight. Okay. So though, that's actually good. You want much more if not all federal and as little as possible private, so the federal loans, you don't wanna co mingle with the private in any kind of refi. Okay. So the federal loans tend to have decent interest rates to you know, because years would be various rates what rates are on your various federal they're anywhere from like three and a half to six point eight. I think is the highest. Okay. So the lower ones there's no way you'd wanna look at refine. You don't need a cosigner for any of those the six the six point eight by standards of recent years. This was undergraduate loans not graduate there. Okay. Because the graduates are probably the ones that are six point eight, but the knee thing with the federal is you can take your federal loans and have them under the direct federal program known as revised pay as you earn. Okay. And under that program Ville loan payment. You're required to make his automatically adjusted up or down based on your income. So. The fact that you're working part time, you may not have any obligation to make payments at all and still be considered to be current. Okay. So the federal loans you don't wanna take them in my great them to any kind of private refinance. In addition with the federal loans. What is it? You do for a job what kind of field? Veterinarian? Okay. I don't know is veterinary medicine field that gets you loan forgiveness after ten years. I think of as okay? So otherwise, it'd be twenty typically if you're under revised pay as you earn. If your income doesn't climb by very large amount. And you're paying is required under revise pay as you earn your loan balances forgiven eventually on the federal. Okay. So that's why you don't wanna co mingle those at all I see. Okay. And by the way, I know this means, you're an ultra brilliant person. Because it said that it's much harder to get into veterinary medicine school than it is into traditional medical school. The brilliant part so on the private loans. What interest rates do they carry? Not sure if I could tell you that right off of that. Right. So until you get your arms around what kind of rates you have in terms on the private loans. I wouldn't do anything moving forward with doing any kind of refi or anything like that. But the only loans he would want to consider refining are those private ones in maybe do wait until you have the full time gig is a veterinarian, and then you'll have the income to support refining on your own without your parents. And you don't have to get into that thing that makes them uncomfortable. But even after I go fulltime should I still leave the federal complaint federal loans on their own. But again move them if they're not already moving into revise pay-as-you-earn. Okay. Okay. All right. Best to you is a vet. Gosh, thank them for everything. You do. Sure. Bye. Bye. Tom is with us on the Clark Howard show. Hello, tom. Hi, tom. You wanna talk about L E DS. I got the bright idea of replace my LED bulbs in the house was an incandescent with LED bulbs in my wife thinks it's a way to get rid of these good and conditioned hopes. So your wife is always right except today. Okay. Okay. Because the math is overwhelming that you whatever friend you have who is tradition-bound in loves the old bulbs. Just give them to as a gift, relative, friend, whatever. 'cause what you're doing is going to save you so much money. The quality of the LED bulbs today. Fantastic. Has you wipe unhappy with the light that the LED's you've chosen to put in she happy with what they cast. Not really I need to get some warmer balls, and it's hard to shop for that. In a story. You know, I don't know how warm warm once you know, what the what the color rating is on it. You can then by that color rating. That's one that she likes anywhere. You could even do something is low tech is buying a couple of different packages of them have different color grades. And let her tell you which color. She likes and the bulb and then that's what you by going forward. Okay. But the money you save is so enormous and the bulbs recently, I saw lamp balls for LED's sixty watt equivalent at ninety nine cents. I mean, they've come way way way way down and cost without really trying that hard you can buy them at two dollars a pop and then the electricity. Each bulb saves is gigantic and the last they'll Al last me, Tom. I know that the bulbs you buy today will still be burning and all be dead. That's how long they're going to last. That's a long time that doesn't happen though. Well, so anyway. In this case in you, look at the wallet. You're completely right. If you get the though light shade, right? The color of that ball bright. Your wife will be happy and you'll both be happy together because how much money you're going to save on those very reliable ball was that a last and last and last maybe for decades. Jerry joins us on the Clark Howard show. Hi, jerry. Taking their call, certainly, Jerry. One of these vacation club presentations, and they made a spectacular offers far buying into this package, and then you're offered points. My question is do you really think that it is? Because I think I recall you hear some time ago that these clubs were not really worth very investment. So this is one where you buy points. And then you exchange the points for vacation weeks at one place or all over the world all over the world. They have multiple locations. It's have you signed up for this. We made like promissory. No, we have to make our final decision. So we I was just hoping to get on this story who I'm very curious about that. Are you given three days seven days, how many days are you given to tell them you want to do this ten days? Okay. I will tell you that there is never a circumstance that you wanna do. This never say it was a timeshare, and we get one week we buy this mortgage type deal. Yeah. It's a it's a hundred percent a rip-off. Okay. Great. How much was it? They want to twenty dollars buy in. And then you pay like nine hundred dollars a year for maintenance fees. Don't do that don't do that ever. I want you to think about how many vacations you could take Jerry for that twenty thousand dollars, plus the interest you pay for it on that promise Ori note, plus nine hundred dollars a week that could go up whenever they want to make that higher. I mean that was my concern because they talked about the the yearly maintenance fees, but they when I asked the question, my well will ever go off or you know, if you know, how are we protected? They wasn't able to answer that question. No. They didn't want to answer that question. So it is when you look at the ripoff meter with their pitching, you if the worst rip off a ever hear is ten something like this is an eight or nine. Okay, great. I really appreciate your hill. Let me tell you something when you cancel you need to do. So exactly as required under the contract. Right. So. They said to mail letter. What would I say? Always say every. Yeah. Let me tell you the thing with mailing the letter. They hope somebody goes may by a forever stamp and pop it on there and just drop it in a box. And gosh, they never got that. You have no proof you ever sin. It. So you do it by certified mail return receipt requested. Okay. Great. And do it exactly as require on the contract because I'll tell you. You're not dealing with normal everyday decent people when you're at one of those pitches. You're listening to the Clark Howard show. Thanks for joining us today. No Room For Distractions
Hey, everybody, you are in the right place at the right time to hear a word from the Lord. Today's messages call no room for distractions. It comes out of the gospel of Saint Luke's after nine fifty one through sixty two in twenty nineteen. We can't be distracted. We have to stay focused. So that we can do all that God has called us to do. I want you to hear the word of the Lord. He allows distractions that he does not tolerate it in. He goes to the marriage that Qena. And he goes to a pin of function. And his mother comes up to him and says, Lord, we're running out of why. And he says woman, what am I doing with the hour has not yet? Come. I'm not supposed to be doing this. This is not on my schedule. This not on my tittering. Literary, but but bring the water bring water. I'll do it. I'll do I just do it. And so the marriage though, I think it has biblical significance. We'll talk about that on another day was really a distraction because his hour had not yet. Come this tech startup by saying that Jesus our has now come do, you know when is your hour? The point and stage where things become valuable to you have become important enough to you that you cannot afford distractions. So our has come in. As with the time was come that. He should be received up. He steadfastly set his face. The time made him set his face to go to the Roussel. Don't don't don't look over at the time set his face to go to Jerusalem because the what time it was. He had to focus. Somethings that you could receive in life without focusing, but the greater blessing that God wants to release it your life cannot be done casually. Superficially, part time with the spirit of indifference in order to really step into the fold is of your purpose. You have to set your face. I'm surrounded by people all the time who have never sent their face day in your life. They have glanced at it. They have looked at it. They've taken pictures of it they've done selfish with it. But they've never really stepped into their purpose. Big little glimpses of it. They've hit at it. Like that slap to the couple of times. But they have never experienced how powerful you are who you set your face. Wonder what would happen if you would focus? The bible says Jesus has set his face to go to the rule of there's no big you. And there's no confusion about is role. More. I will go hang out the whale wait on this woman coming down. So we've talked her no more, no more. No more. No more that no more. No more of him disappeared in the crowd. And hand the catch up with them by walking on the water to meet them on the ball. No more. No, more disappearance Nomo going behind the rocks to pray. No. He has. His face to go through until you set your face to go to your purpose or destiny. Calling the church on Sunday morning will be Harvard. Is there a good y'all? Feel like it. I'm tired. I got you set your face is somebody takes your parking space or I'm not preaching that Sunday. You'll drive back home. You set your praise to go to the room, you will leave this because somebody your ex boyfriend came here, and you may do uncomfortable as you don't wanna be around him. And he said over there with somebody. And you can't tell you the more wouldn't you sat. Phrase. To go to Derulo. He says the team head of him go scout out in areas. He's moving towards the Rusal, and they went down to Samaria. And when they got down to Samaria, the Samaritans would not make room for Jesus. And it's a mess because Jesus has spent time at the whale. Made an investment and Samaria. Caused them to become birded in Samaria supposed to be a growing thriving group of believers in Samaria. But at the moment he needed Samaria. They had no room. Funny. How people have room when they need you. Or? Mess with somebody today. It's gonna be a rough one here today. All kind of roll with their own the receiving end. But what is your time to receive some? They say, oh, no. We don't. So they said send him somewhere else. And James and John of all people shocked to James because this really sounds more like something Peter would do. Because there's a lot that you want us to call five down from heaven and burn up lackey lied to kill all of wait. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. They just didn't let us we don't have to kill everybody. Just because they didn't give you the response. Why is it? The people wanna kill you just because you don't respond the way to respond. See what I'm saying to you don't seem like to me that this required that kind of reaction. You stay with me tonight is different from dropping a bomb and killing my kids. Let's call fire down for him. And then kill everybody. And that's when my heart got heavy. I wasn't so heavy because the Samaritans didn't receive it. My heart was heavy that the men who were with it. John who were calls to him. They were in the right place. But they had the wrong spirit. Samaria ahead in room. They had no room for Jesus. Don't they understand? The Jesus is used to. People not having. No room. He was born. In a major. He was robbed is close. He's he's started his life at the barn because people had no it funny. How much power does a president have over election recounts?
The racist for Senator and governor in Florida, we're both decided by less than half a percent that is why there is a legally mandated recount will this recount change. Anything tonight from Broward County, Florida. This is the home stretch. And the epicenter of what's shaping up to be a historic recount is taking place right behind me. We're looking at the Florida governor and Senator raises a double recount in the fight for governor Republican. Rhonda's Santa's has a narrow lead over democrat, Andrew gillum. And in the Senate race Republican Rick Scott is barely leading democrat go Nelson. President Trump tweeted about the racist saying they should be called in favor of Scott and descent this claiming you ballot showed up out of nowhere. And that many ballots are missing were forged. Election night was more than a week ago. And yet in Florida many results are still outstanding margins in several races are too tight for the state to certify a winner, so close. In fact, that recounts are underway. I was in the Broward County election office on Monday. And it's in the back of this nondescript strip mall, where there's all these canopy set up for protesters and TV crews, and they're they're like three layers of security that you have to go through to get into the building to watch Washington Post national political reporter Amy Gardner called us from Fort Lauderdale Florida in her time at the Broward County election office earlier this week. She watched live as Florida's ballots were recounted. There's like sheriff's deputies on the outside, and then you get in and you have to sign in. And then after you sign in you have to go through a magnetometer, and then you go into this room, and it's really crowded with seats for the. Monitor's and press, and then on one wall to wall windows, and you look in there if you're looking into like movie and Athlon the candy factory. Cast you and move on. You're fired. And there these giant things and you see workers like pudding backs of ballots into the machine I saw this fascinating sort of paint drying moment where a man came out of the counting room with a stack of ballots and a plastic been the kind of been that you store your Christmas ornaments in in your attic. And he walks up to them. And he said we have certified the two new machines that we've added to expedite the counting. We've done our logistics and accuracy tests on these two new machines. And here are the result. They pass the test. We're ready to get going using the machine store into count. And then he put those ballots that were used just fake sample ballots to test though to machines into that bin. And then he feels the been with tape. And then he writes, a number on it or has a sticker with a number on it and puts that on the bin. And he reads the number out to the canvassing board. So that it's all. Public process to certify that the records will be kept and stored and you know, untouched by partisan hand. It was pretty amazing at this point several races in Florida are at different points in the recount process, but two races in particular have been getting a lot of attention first. There's the US Senate race between the incumbent democratic Senator Bill Nelson and Republican governor Rick Scott after a machine recount there. That race is still close enough that it's now moving to a manual recount second a contentious governor's race between democrat Andrew gillum, the mayor of Tallahassee and Republican Rhonda Santa's a former congressman now a machine recount in that race did not trigger an additional manual recount. But as of Thursday Gillam said, he's not planning to concede in support of these recounts. Democrats have adopt. A message that every vote must be counted. But the democratic candidates are also the ones who helped lower totals in both of these raises before the recounts started Republicans, including the president himself have claimed without evidence broad voter fraud carried out by Democrats. Trump is also suggested that certain counties are finding votes to support the Democrats in the recount he's tweeted that the elections should be called in favor of the Republicans that ballots are missing or forged. And that an honest vote count is not possible. That's quite a bit of rhetoric attacking our election process from the leader of our country. But is it unprecedented. And how much power does a president have over the outcome of election recounts? This is Kenny do that a podcast that explores the powers and limitations of the American presidency? I'm Alison Michael's Amy Gardner via phone call from Florida. Recounted if you will what it was like in the sunshine state on election night. Well, it was interesting as it always is in Florida. First thing that happened. That was interesting was that these versus where really really close they had been tagged as close they were within the margin of error in the final. Holy. But in both cases, the democrat was up in the polls Nelson's real clear politics. Average was like two point four percent Gill was plus three point six percentage points. So, you know, I remember thinking as I watch returns that night. Oh, okay. So yeah. That's right. Florida's swing state. No blue ways are coming here. And you know, that was sort of the general feel in the first hour of the evening. And then as the night went on did things change. Well, what happened was before eight o'clock so really early in the in an evening that was a long one for many of us Andrew gillum conceded. It was interesting too. Because a lot of energy in Florida had been round, but Gillam campaign. Rain millions upon millions of dollars have been spent in both races the Senate race and the governor's race. But Gillam is this dynamic young African American mayor of Tallahassee lot of outside money came in and lots of excitement about whether the used boat was going to be surging in Florida. And what that meant for Gillam a lot less talk about what that meant for Nelson. An older incumbent not as dynamic a candidate as Guillem but Gillingham's race was not as tight his margin of defeat was wider and he conceded before eight o'clock and evening, whereas the Senate race remained close and nobody knew what was going to happen. So then what changed what took Gillingham's concession out of the picture? What happened? So the evening ended with both Rick, Scott and Rhonda Santa toot Republicans with large enough margin about. Percentage point to look like they were going to win the newspapers across country declared the Santa's the winner, and they said that Scott declared victory, but that Nelson wasn't conceding yet. So it looked when we went to bed that maybe this thing was over that the that the Democrats had had a bad night in flora Republicans have had a good night. So that's how the night ended. But then over the next day and then second day, those margin started to shrink, and the reason those margin starts to shrink is that larger counties, particularly Broward County where I am right now in Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach county to myself and Miami Dade County south that we're still counting their ballots. They were counting their absentee or mail in ballots and provisional ballots. And so the numbers were changing, and those counties are so big that those numbers were having a measurable impact on the margin. And the margin of victory for both Scott and the Santa's started to shrink. So let's talk about what triggers an automatic recount. And how autumn attic it actually is what does the margin have to be in order to trigger recount. So in Florida if the margin of victory is less than a half of a percentage point that triggers an automatic machine recount if the margin is under a quarter of a percentage point point two five that triggers and manual recount. And so by Thursday, both races were under a half of a percentage point. And in fact, Scots was under a quarter of a percentage point. That's when Andrew gillum unconsented and said, hey, we need to make sure every vote counts and that happened and then by Saturday the secretary of state, Ken dead. Stor ordered a machine recount in both races. Because they were both beneath point five percent in the way, the state law work is that you I do a machine recount. And then when the results of the machine recount come in if any of the races machine recounted are under that quarter percentage point threshold. Then he orders a manual recount. So hand counting. What's the benefit of hand counting versus machine counting? Why is that for the final step? So when they order a hand recount, they don't recount every single ballot there. Eight million ballots cast this year in Florida. It's a lot of ballots what they do is they count only the what's known as the over vote and the under vote and also swim with that is so if if I fill out Rick Scott on my ballot. But then I'm like, oh shoot. No. I meant to vote for Bill Nelson. I put an X through Rick Scott. And then I fill in the bubble for Bill Nelson and the machine hag my ballot as an over vote. It means that I voted for more than one can a candidate in a race. And it's not counted. It is set aside. And if I under vote, it means I didn't vote at all in a race, and my ballot is flagged for that. And the reason for this is that if the over vote and under vote ballots are numerous enough to potentially sway in election. They need to be examined to see the intent of the voter. So what you'll see in the hand recount is the canvassing boards in each county studying these paper ballots to say, oh, no look. This one's definitely for Nelson because there's an extra Scott, and then they filled out the Nelson bubble or no, this one's not clear or we disagree because they're Republicans and Democrats monitoring these these proceedings, so there's going to be all kinds of Chechens. No that one's for Nelson. No that one for Scott. And then the under vote is the same thing. Like, they'll be there might actually be an extra one of the bubbles that wasn't detected by the machine. So everyone will agree. Yeah. That one's for Scott or everyone will disagree. So that's what gets recounted in the manual recount. And could have a, you know, a measurable difference in these survey close race it right now. How many races are affected by? This recount there's also another statewide race. For agriculture Commissioner, it's actually even closer than the two top ticket races in the agriculture. Commissioner race the margin is only five thousand three hundred forty votes right now, which is kind of amazing there's a scattering of state legislative races. That are also being recounted one of them is a state house race in Palm Beach county here in south Florida where the margin is only thirty seven votes. So that's sort of interesting. So then to me recount and Florida ever since I've sort of been aware of politics has been synonymous. There are constantly recount in Florida in for my perception is that true. And if so why are there so many frequently in Florida, it's a swing state. I mean is quintessentially a swing state is the largest swing state in America. And that means that it's really evenly divided. We've done a lot of stories about the demographic makeup of Florida and people talk about. Bluewave coming across the country and states like Georgia and Virginia. And maybe even Texas where suburban educated affluent professionals are moving in and changing the political dynamic split in Florida. There's change on both sides of the political spectrum. There's an influx of Latino voters a lot from Puerto Rico. But at the same time, there's an influx of older white Americans retirees who come to Florida and those two kind of equal and opposite demographic forces keep this state, really close. So then when will we know the results of these elections when will the election results be certified? So the deadline for certification is November twentieth which is Tuesday, but that could change if a judge orders to change there have been several judicial cases where judges or ordering certain things happen that could force those. Lines back. Let's move onto the politics of all of this. Why are Democrats seemingly so interested in seeing these recounts through well, the largest counties where the largest number of ballots were in the balance either set aside or rejected for something wrong with the mail in ballot like a signature mismatch. These are predominantly democratic stronghold. Broward Palm Beach, Miami Dade and generally speaking, the Democrats pursue a strategy that the more voters who participate the better their outcome. If you get more voters to participate at the polls, they're more likely to be democratic because his particularly midterm election, more Democrats tend to stay home than Republican. So that's the reason why Democrats typically push in court and at these canvassing meetings for every vote to count. And why are Republicans seemingly so against this recount is it just the inverse or are there other reasons? I mean, they will tell you that there is rampant voter fraud, and that the Democrats are trying to count illegal and ill not eligible ballots, and that they believe in the rule of law, and that the a lot of these ballots shouldn't count because they're they're not legal ballots. However, there is not evidence in our country anywhere of rapid voter fraud. And so there's certainly been much conjecture on the part, not only Democrats. But also civil rights advocates them, lawyers that Republicans are as you say following the sort of converse strategy of the Democrats, which is the fewer votes, we allow in the better our chances, but what are the risks of these approaches really from both political parties could the discourse around the integrity of elections in our country affect the way voters perceive their democratic. Lapper -tunities is it harmful. I mean, the letter is so dramatic and accusatory where Republicans are queuing Bill Nelson of voter fraud, and the Democratic Party all the way up to Donald Trump, the president and the electorate is so divided. I mean spending time at the Broward County election office this week. I've been struck by how angry the protesters are on both sides with supporters of Rick Scott just shouting at the supporters of Bill Nelson and the supporters of Bill Nelson doing the same thing. It certainly makes sense to conjecture that this is bad for our democracy. But it's worth noting that our own polling actually shows that faith in the American electoral system is pretty high. So whether this is actually harming the integrity of elections. I don't think we have enough evidence to really state definitively. And it's also worth noting that turn out this year in amid. From election cycle with historic and people vote when they believe in the election system. So that's a good sign can you elaborate on some of the public statements. The president has been making about this recount, what's he said? So it started like Wednesday Thursday after the election last week when he started tweeting about how the Democrats were trying to steal this election. And as those margins that we discussed got narrower as the ballots. The final ballots were being counted in Broward and elsewhere. He actually said in one of his tweets ballots found for Democrats. I wonder how come that happened? You know, and it was it's stream Lii sort of inflammatory. And the fact is that ballots weren't bound for Democrats. The election officials were completing their count, and they were counting ballots for both Republicans and Democrats just that because these are democratic counties they were counting more democratic Dallas than Republican ballots. To be clear, Kenneth president beyond his rhetoric. Play a role in a recount Kamei. Have any direct power over? What happens in a recount process? He doesn't have any direct power over it. He has indirect power and in a couple of ways he certainly has set the tone, and it's clear that others in his party, including governor Scott are following his lead in accusing the Democrats of fraud. And even the secretary of state announced an investigation yesterday of some activities by the Democratic Party here that team to be something that resulted from some of the rhetoric that we're hearing from President Trump and from governor Scott he also has called for the firing of the supervisor of elections here in Broward County a woman named Brenda Snipes, which is a power that governor Scott hold as governor he can remove her. If you choose to do, so he also appoints federal judiciary. And there are several cases winning the way through the courts right now that could determine the outcome of this race, actually, the judge who. Is overseeing most of these cases is of appointee of Obama, and that's actually attracting a lot of criticism out in the out in the Twitter world to so there's an indirect way that he has power over the elections here, but not directly, and why does he care so much about the elections there? Why is this so important to him or seem so given his tweets I mean, I think there's a couple of reasons I think they want to keep the Republican majority in the Senate as big as it can be and one less seat means that much less of a decisive margin in the Senate. I also think that Florida is going to be a critical battleground in twenty twenty when we all assume President Trump will run for re election, and I think he knows that too. And so setting the stage for twenty twenty by criticizing Democrats, and accusing Democrats of broad could be a. A sort of dry run or dress rehearsal for what we're going to hear two years from now. So then when this recount is wrapped up, regardless of who wins these offices, given all of the rhetoric from Democrats from Republicans kind of how heated it's gotten who will kind of emerge as the real winners at least of messaging or and the and the losers for that matter who serves to gain something here, that's a really tough. That's a really tough one. I mean, it sounds like the Republicans are winning the rhetoric wards because there are a little louder. The Democrats will tell you that they think that the volume of the Republican is actually a sign of the weakness of their arguments. And I think that the other battleground where this whole episode gets won or lost is not in the rhetoric but actually in the courtrooms. And so if judges hand down rulings over the next couple of days that prescribe how these laws or? Acted and how ballots counted and how signatures are matched in ways that allow more voters in that's a win for the Democrats. And the if the judges rule in the opposite direction that's a win for the Republicans. So I think the judicial rulings are another place where we have to watch to determine the winners and losers in the longer run here. Thanks so much for listening to can he do that?
