Florida Law May Thwart Effort by Cruise Industry to Set Sail

"A seven night Caribbean cruise from Fort Lauderdale, with all crew and adult passengers vaccinated. Cruise industry has been shut down for the past 15 months by the Corona virus pandemic. The CDC said last month that cruise ships with nearly all passengers and crew vaccinated can resume sailing. But NPR's Greg Allen reports there is a problem it violates a Florida law. This ad by celebrities sums up the relief and excitement among cruise companies. Some day is finally here and we're ready to sail beyond again. Extended shutdown has cost the industry more than $17 billion in direct losses. The celebrity cruise departing June 26 will be the first under new CDC protocols. CBC says ships can resume sailing under two scenarios. The first is after conducting tests cruises with masks and social distancing in place show they can keep passengers and crew safe. The second scenario, when advocated by the industry, allows ships to resume sailing immediately as long as 95% of passengers and crew are vaccinated. Chris Gray Faust is managing editor of the website. Cruise critic. People will not have to wear masks, they will not have to do social distancing and at least in the US, they'll be able to do shore excursions without you're staying in a cruise ship bubble type of situation. The idea of requiring all adult passengers to be vaccinated is popular not just with the companies but also cruise passengers. House says the survey conducted last week found 80% of cruise passengers said they would prefer to sail on a ship with a vaccine requirement. So what we're finding is that Abbott cruisers want to get back to see, but they would overwhelmingly prefer to be on a ship with vaccines. That's what passengers want. It's what cruise lines want. But it's not what Florida Governor Rond de Santis once. He recently signed a bill passed by the Republican Legislature at his request, which bans company from requiring any customer to show proof of vaccination. Under the law, each violation carries a $5000 fine. Asked about it last week, De Santis said, applies to cruise lines and that if they violated, they'll pay. We are going to enforce Florida law. The Army Is Expanding Allowed Hairstyles For Women

"For years, Most women in the U. S Army were required to wear their hair short or pinned back into a very tight bond that time has now passed. Earlier This year, the Army began allowing women who spent most of their day away from the field freedom from the bun. And this month, the army updated that changed to allow female soldiers. A little more freedom. I actually started Tolo practice braiding my hair because I was so excited that we were going to be able to braid our hair and wear ponytails that Sergeant Nickel Pierce, who works at Fort Sill in Oklahoma, she's been able to wear braids and ponytails since January, and now she's able to wear them untucked so long as they don't go past her shoulder blades, thanks to the update to the updated grooming policy. Major Terry Taylor, stationed at Fort Stewart in Georgia has enjoyed not having to chemically relaxed her hair because locks, braids, twists and cornrows can come together in one or two braids or a ponytail and still meet regulation with lax. There is a style called barrel rolls. And which are hair can be rolled back. Taylor usually pins up the ends, but now she can leave them free if she wants very professional and appearance very neat. And it's very user friendly because that style can last at least two weeks, so that allows me to not have to manipulate my hair is much no loose ends from Major Farren Um, A Campbell in Silver Spring. Maryland. Yes, so in the Army on pretty much known as the bald major within my unit on the only bold female she suffered hair damage and loss after years, wearing her hair in a tight bun. And she's not alone. Many black women soldiers reported having that experience Major Campbell says she's happy. The U. S Army allows her to be bald by choice and do shave my head and it's been a very freeing change within a regulation. It's not just comfort here. Thick hair buns make it difficult for women to wear their helmets properly, making it low on the eyes, sometimes obscuring vision. Ah, problem when you have to aim your weapon. We've all mentioned. Some of these things were long overdue that Sergeant Major Jennifer Francis of the U. S. Army Institute for Surgical Research at Fort Sam in Houston, Texas, She was on the panel that gave input to leadership about updating the grooming guidelines. We are an army and we can't necessarily do everything civilians are doing so we've got to figure out what's best for the Army. And its people. Women now make up about 15% of the U. S. Army, and about a third of those are black. Many see rules against certain hairstyles as outdated at best discriminatory at worst. Major Terry Taylor, now set to retire after two decades of service says how a soldier wears her hair when she's on base does not change her leaf aladi or her professionalism. Who's to say that a ponytail is not professional in appearance? Who's to say the locks are not professional in appearance as long as you can, probably where your headgear and look professional in your uniforms. I think that's what matters at the end of the day. The army now joins the Navy, the air Force and Space Force Yes, Space force when it comes to allowing loose

The Epic Court Battle That Could Upend Apple's Future

"Talked on the show before about developer fees. Those are the commission's usually around thirty percent. That app store owners take from purchases made through their marketplaces. Some developers have pushed back against these fees. Saying there too high while store owners like apple and google have argued that the fees are necessary to keep transactions secure. This debate is the subject of a court battle between apple and the creator of fortnight epic games which kicks off today. The outcome of the trial will have ramifications for apple. And the rest of the tech giant's so for more on this. I'm joined by our apple reporter tim higgins. Hey tim thanks for being here. Thank you all right before we get started we should note that the wall street journal's publisher dow jones has a commercial agreement to supply news apple services. Okay so tim can. You remind us how we got to the trial that starts today. There's actually quite a dramatic backstory. Here right now. This is a clash of the titans. If you will it goes back to last august and the creator of fortnight epic games surprised a lot of people with an update to the fort game on the apple app store that aim to create a payment system. That would get around apple's payment system. They'll allow users to go into an epic games created pay system and that was a huge violation of apple's rules and it resulted in fortnight being booted from the app store and what followed was a pretty big legal battle that we now are seeing take place in a courtroom in oakland california and so as the court case. Kicks off today like you said in oakland. What's really the central question of this case. What is this all about. There's a few things going on here. Epic feels that apple is using. Its power anti competitive way specifically. They argue that apple has this delivery device or distribution device for apps on iphones and that it's one hundred percent controlled by them and that that is a monopoly in a bad sense and that they're misusing that power so what this case comes down to a large way is the definition of what a market is in the digital

Foam in that was at this point almost ten years ago and that was at the time i said put in the best in at the time that was cat six and cat six. Today is still fine like it can still do a lot. I've never had a problem with those wires and those walls. They just work a hundred percent of the time at as good network wiring tends to mostly do and it's been great so the amount of time you have is potentially long and so even despite all this it's probably still worth doing so and and the tar. You might have longer than you think before you actually hitting problem with that and you know even though right now ten gig ethernet stuff exists and i think those old cats six wires I don't know exactly the tolerances that makes us so. I can't do all these things but like i'm pretty sure i can't do ten gig. Delay two point five or something like that. I think you can do ten gig over cat. Six just over shorter runs. Yeah but who knows like if they accidentally like to to close to a power line somewhere or something who knows but anyway it does gigabit just fine and still like now ten years later. That's still fine. And when i put it in ten years ago gigabit wasn't new like it was it was like well into its lifespan. But gigabit networking is still really fast and for what you. It's still the fastest internet connection. You can get in the house so the wire at least in the us in most places and even that like you're you're lucky if you can get that And so you know. I'm not being held back for internet connectivity. By that the only thing that's really holding back for me is like computer to computer. File transfers and. That's not something. I do so often that. I need that to be super fast. As long as my internet connection is fast which it is over over cat. Six just fine. Then that's i. I don't have any problems with that. And so if i'm if i'm going to continue to use cat six for another ten years it would probably still be fine and i probably would still not really be feeling a lot of like being held back by the wiring on my walls. That's that would at that point. Be almost twenty years old. I would plan for ten gig though. Because i feel like ten gig is gonna come around and not just because i have a computer tinky ports on it did it just gets in shouting distance. And it's kind of now as pointed out that the crappy usb connections on our computers are now significantly faster than our internet connections. Whatever whatever the current pick your pick either knits that i pick your usb standard it can do ten gig twenty gig forty gig right over and forget about thunderbolt. Just love and thunder. All i guess is the forty gig one. Usb surprisingly fast and we think of that as a thing we use to connect a mouse a keyboard. ten gig ethernet in the data centers. they're much faster. Variance internet that are in common. Use all the time but those are obviously super expensive. But i feel like ten gig were in shouting distance right but that said chat just looked at the distance. Apparently cat six can do ten gig up to fifty meters or something years. Mo- most houses are not that big right so just look at the length of your runs. I think it is worth future. Proofing for ten gig but to do that. You might not have to do anything more than do cat. Six in reasonable runs like margot said like i've had them from a central point. Everyone just drops down into in between two studs and comes out of port. And you're done right so if you don't have a gigantic house and each individual run is not longer than fifty five hundred meters total wiring on your walls but like from the switch to wherever you're going then you're all set for ten gig and i think that is reasonable. Future proofing given margot's experience with the weird cat seven connectors in the video of the cat. Eight ones. I think it is worth messing with that. Just because of the the weird grounding chief that you have to do in the size of the actress. But i wouldn't go below cat six. I think there's a cat six eighteen hours from the. I don't think that existed. I did my first set but anyway yeah. I from what i've heard cat. Six is is totally fine for almost any modern news. So that's probably what i would do if i was doing it again. Now that being said the second half of this question was about Networking gear and stuff like that. And i have been a fan and user of ubiquity for quite some time. Now i would never recommend it to like a typical home user. But if you're listening to this podcast there's a greater than average chance that you're a nerd and for those of you out there who liked to have networking nerdy stuff. Ubiquitious pretty cool. But it is very nerdy that being said their latest generation of stuff The the dream machine a router and andrew machine pro have had problems I i'm using one now. And the other day. I had to reboot it. To let new devices joined the wi fi network and part of the reason why and is another happened. And part of the reason why. I've loved ubiquity for so long. Is that the previous gear. I had the old like edge router and then the old security gateway that i had.

"That actually has a physical space between the two speakers. And when you do that. Almost all of that custom processing is disabled. And so the way that. I've heard homepods for most of the time that i've been using them. I'm also listening to a stereo pair and the stereo pair really does sound way better than a single one way better and it's on even then using all that stuff or it's using very little of it at least if you want room filling sound you can do it. You can try it with like one thing in one place. That's doing all these tricks. You know sound bars. Which i hate as a category often advertise similar kind of things bounce the sound off the walls. You don't need rear speakers need an and you know what doesn't really work that well. I've never been fooled by these things. I've never once thought. Wow it sounds like they're speakers actually on the left and right of me or it. Sounds like i actually have rear speakers from the soundbar. No you know why because of physics. It's not that easy to bounce off walls in ways you can actually tell with reasonable volumes. That doesn't that. Don't sound really overwhelmingly weird from certain angles. It's just physics. You need multiple points of sound to actually fill room. Sounds good the entire idea of cramming all this stuff into one speaker i think was bad engineering and cost management. I don't think this product should ever have been releasing the way it was that added so much cost to it. Meanwhile you look at the homepod mini a device. That was almost certainly prioritizing. Cost over almost all else. It's a hundred bucks compared to the three hundred and fifty. They were selling this thing for the homepod. Mini is actually kind of expensive for what it is because it only has one driver it. It doesn't even have like dedicated like twitter and woofer. It's it's one single speaker driver. That does both jobs which is one of the reason. It doesn't sound very good because that's that's really hard to make work physics wise To make it sound good which one thing doing everything they really cut down so much that. If you look at the tear downs on fix it versus the home pod full-size one and you can see. There's just all this massive complexity and engineering and components in this thing and then you look at a tear down of the homepod mini. And there's almost nothing in it and it's r- it's significantly stripped-down way cheaper way simpler and it starts to seem obvious like the homepod the first homepods just it seems like apple totally ignored cost when designing it like. It seems like they totally over engineered at thinking that they could just kind of walk into the market and just start taking money and a lot of people have made the same had made an analogy to the ipod. Hi fi the old speaker doc. It's actually a very good analogy because that was another area. Where apple didn't have a passion for speaker docks. They were not the first ones to speaker dock market. I think steve jobs was jealous of all the money that was making selling three hundred dollar speaker docks for their ipods. And they're like we can get that three hundred dollars ourselves and they made one. That was a little bit more expensive and a little bit nicer in certain ways not nicer in other ways sound familiar and it flops market because it turned out most people don't need one of those at all and the ones that did want speaker dr would much rather by one of the like hundred dollar. Jbl ones that sound pretty decent then by the like almost four hundred dollar apple or bows whatever ones and i think the home pod. It was a similar flaw. A similar flop in that they just over engineered it so much in ways that they didn't need to get it's not like they made it sound too good. It doesn't sound that you only have one of them. They just over engineered it you know and and the homepod sound significantly worse not because it only had not because it lacks seven twitter's and special microphone to tune itself to the room. Like you know how you can tune your woofer. Other room for automatic base correction remove one word automatic and offer an e q. Or at least a base knob in the adjustment panel for the homepod in software which by the way as a home pot owner and as someone who has heard from a lot of other home pet homeowners. We all want that. If there was a justifiable base on the home pod that would solve the vast majority of issues people have with audio. You know because it works pretty well for me but yeah there are times where i would want to adjust it and i've heard from so many people who are like i tried it but it's too much base so many people would love a software adjustment of just obey snob in the control panel and the software and they can get that microphone and they can also design a product. That's made to either be firing in one direction or paired with the second one and get rid of most of those seven. Twitter's and seven custom amplifiers are on each one they can get rid of the direct and ambient audio beam forming. Because again like. You're not trying if you don't try to fill a room With one single point and say are. Here's one point. It'll be inexpensive if you wanna fill a room. Get two pair them. That is such a different engineering goal and that makes for such a different product and then you can make that product cheaper and maybe you could make a really good sounding one for two hundred bucks.

two hundred bucks Twitter hundred dollar twitter ipods ipod two speakers two pair one driver three hundred dollars steve jobs one place both jobs one thing apple one second one one speaker one point one word

"That minority of the gaming world has disproportionate influence. Because they are sort of on the bleeding edge of gaming technology on the bleeding edge of gaming complexity of the advancement of the art form using the best technology available. And that's why we always talk about in this context. That's my bias to the type of games. I like and play but it is important to recognize it from apple's perspective. There's nothing broken here mobile gaming where it's at and apple's doing really well there. Well the good news is that apple's documentation is so flawless. That if you ever have anything. You're confused about. You can look at their perfect invitation and find the answer. Every time i think people are refusing support games to the mac because of bad documentation you say that but if motorization was easily explained than perhaps that wouldn't be such hurdle. I think it'd be looking for any excuse to not do the. Oh i got to notarize to. That's it. I'm not making a game. I'm just saying it's not throw that out there. Now that i've brought my butter anything anyway marco Tell me about what's going on with your homepods. Yes so. I wanted to just to a little bit of quick on the homepod discontinuation discussion from last week because there were a couple things that i learned. In the meantime we're that i forgot about So one of them. A bunch of people wrote in to point out that the google home max was also apparently discontinue. This was basically like google's three hundred dollar big smart speaker. It apparently was again three hundred dollars so price big speaker that also had a home system built in and it also had an ox in jack apparently from what we were imagine that it didn't didn't google also have a sphere that they can before they even ship. That had that tv box that was like the q. Something is that that then ever shift. I don't think there was there was some google. I thought it was a smart speaker that was spherical shaped that got canned before but anyway continue. So you're saying klay we'll look the google home. Max which was similar marketing wise was also discontinued to there must be. There must not be a market for premium smart speaker. And i don't think that follows google cancels everything. Google stuff all the time and they suck it hardware and they've discontinued lots of hardware of all sizes and small different prices and everything. So i wouldn't necessarily say that says anything about it There is an echo studio. That is two hundred dollars and looks kind of like knock off homepod. I've never seen one in person but amazon selling it for a while. So you know that that product seems to be similar and there and you look at the entire product line by sonos almost all of which costs significantly more than the homepod. Or at least in the ballpark of the home pod. And they've been selling that stuff for years and they seem to not be out of business yet so clearly. The market is there. I mean look like any of the speakers apple sold in the apple stores in throughout throughout history. Not just like the ipod. Hi fi but like you know you look at like all of the you know bows and bmw and be. Oh and all these things like all these like big speakers and speaker docks and things about over the years and they're all like three hundred dollars so i don't think we can say there's no market for this. I think there's clearly market for this. If they're good and if they're compelling and the homepod was was not good and compelling enough for its price i think that's the real problem here We also heard from a few people who pointed out something. I should have thought of the. Didn't that with both the ipad air. Sorry both the pro being discontinued. End the homepods being discontinued one factor that. I don't think we mentioned earlier. Didn't mention lot is possible component shortages due to covid there's apparently been a massive like chip and component shortage in the industry. So it's possible. That apple intended to have these things these products in the lineup for longer before like maybe until they replacements for ready but they had to start making tough decisions because of some kind of component shortages. They literally just can't get you know even if it isn't the zeon they literally can't get like you know the speaker rim holder or like you know some you know the bluetooth chip or something anymore. For the i mac or for the home pot it could have been anything because when you look at what goes into a full size home pod. This is kinda where i wanted to go with this. Look at what goes into a full service. Home pod compared to the homepod many and you see very very different engineering and cost priorities in these things. You know you look at the home. Pod the full-size one and one of the headlining features of it. Was this automatic. Sensing of the room where it would like. It would detect where the walls and stuff were and it would bounce the sound off the walls and reflect it all around the room. To basically try to simulate it being more than just one speaker to say. Oh you know you you can make great sound room filling sandwiches one speaker and you look at all the product marketing like depictions of the home. That apple had that time it was always like the home pod magically with no power cord sitting in the middle of table in the middle of a room and somehow filling the whole room with sound and i think that's that's how they design this and they they're like let's let's make the maximum maximum engineered thing we can hear and if look at all the hardware. It's in the home pod. It has to quit their page. An array of seven horn loaded tweeter each with its own custom amplifier seven amps and. It's the twitter. I assume that the wolfer has its own app. As well it must so eight amps. Inside on seven tweeter this internal low-frequency calibration microphone for automatic ballot correction direct and ambient audio beam forming all. This all these like processing intensive stuff all the twitter's to be able to fire three hundred sixty degrees in all directions and be able to sense the room and adjust things and everything. Meanwhile if you have one home pod playing by itself without a second one paired to it it sounds pretty good but you know it sounds a hell of a lot better getting a second one and making an actual stereo pair..

"Nothing however a week later a man working near the river smelled a foul odor and reported it and police show up to check things out. They knew immediately what they were looking at human remains dismembered and encased in concrete. The search team knows it's gonna take some time to make an official id. But tim miller from texas equa search said he knew right away. It was vanessa. Because he could see a lock of her hair sticking out. They ended up finding three separate shallow graves each one containing remains in each hidden with cement in covered in brush. Was this like in a different area than search like i. I'm always wondering like how did they miss this. You know. I kind of wondered that too because it was the same area that they'd searched a week before and yeah i guess they just totally missed it. Apparently like the guy who i noticed the smell of dekom. He was actually out after a fresh rain. Which is like maybe the ground was like moist and yeah willing to give things up if you will. Yeah like that might explain. Why the search team like even missed the smell or whatever but but again what. I can't go over. It's i'm like the the people missed it. Like the cadaver dog missed it to which to me. i like to put so much faith in prophets. It seems kind of impossible. But i also wonder like if the cement had anything to do with that like encasing it better potentially but i kind of what i wonder is like to me. There's two options right. Like either whoever buried vanessa out there potentially could have put her there after the last surname or the had to really know a lot about how to conceal human remains like you said maybe it was the fact that it was in case in cement. Didn't give off any kind of sent and investigators are pretty sure they know who exactly it was that knew how to conceal a body later that night. Investigators go back not to erin but again to his girlfriend sesame with the news that vanessa's body had been found by the river. Cecil tells investigators that her boyfriend. Aaron picked her up from the gas station where she worked either late on the night of april twenty second or early in the morning the twenty third and they drove together out to the leon river erin tells her that he killed vanessa that he bludgeoned her to death with a hammer in the arms room where he worked and brought her off base in a tough box at one point he opened. The box incessantly looked inside. Sensibly then for whatever reason agrees to help erin and together. They use a machete type tool to dismember. Vanessa's body. Then attempt to burn it. But they couldn't get it to like actually work. It was not destroying her remains like they intended so instead. They dug three shallow graves and buried her remains. Whoa wait but what about the concrete where that come in. So that actually happened. Three days after according to vanessa episode of twenty twenty this time aaron incessantly comeback and they come back prepared with hairnets and gloves and other gear to help ensure their dna wouldn't be found at the site. They spent some time further dismembering her body and they tried again to burn it but ultimately ended up pouring concrete into the shallow graves and it's concrete that cecil had bought online cecil agrees to lead investigators record her calls with aaron and when they talk he says baby they found pieces. Aaron was already under close surveillance. And so the id investigators bring him back in again for questioning the arrest him. I wish i meant that. They arrested him. But no i guess at this point. They didn't feel like there was enough evidence yet and honestly i don't know why he's not in custody at this point but he's not and because he's not. He is able to bolt out the door. Run past the guy who supposed to be watching him and escape into the night. The immediately send out an alert to law enforcement to look out for errands car and stop him when they see it which they do but before they can arrest him and charge him for vanessa's murder. He turns his own weapon on himself. So that's it. That's how the story ends right. we'll sort of. Yeah i mean. Sally has been charged with her role in destroying and hiding vanessa's body faces up to twenty years in federal prison and a fine of two hundred fifty thousand dollars. Her trial date set for later. This month on november thirtieth actually okay. Whatever happened to sexual harassment investigation. You mentioned one was started but was there ever any conclusion to that right. Yes so they actually launched that investigation on june eighteenth and didn't wrap it up until early july and officials say that they didn't find a link between the sexual harassment allegations and vanessa's debt. Okay so then. What was the motive for her murder. That's still not clear. There are some sources that suggest it had something to do with. Vanessa discovering errands relationship with cecil e. Which wasn't necessarily an issue except that she was still married to another fort hood soldier and we might have touched on this before adultery can get you dishonorably discharged from the military but according to a two thousand and three article in slate by brendan kerner a discharge due to adultery. Alone is almost unheard of you. Do still see it but it will almost be one of those things that's like stacked on top of more serious charges. They'll just toss it because it's there. Yeah and i mean my understanding. Is that cecil and her husband. Were actually separated at the time as well so like the real question. My mind is like what else was aaron hiding. And here's the thing. Vanessa and gregory are just two of dozens of tragic deaths at fort hood just this year in the first nine months of twenty twenty twelve soldiers either went missing from fort hood or turned up. Debt of those are the stories. I told you today but there are so many.

"It's april twenty second. Twenty twenty and myra again is trying to reach her sister vanessa. She's calling and calling but the calls. Just keep rolling over to voicemail and she's texting and texting but her tax aren't going through at all like they're not even showing as delivered and it's super concerning because even when she's getting vanessa never turns off her phone. Myra starts calling around with how she learns. That vanessa missed a standing phone call with her fiance one as well and they talked every day at noon but when he called on this day she never answered my renault's right away that something is terribly wrong. Like she's worried. Maybe vanessa's been in some kind of accident or something and every minute that passes. It's just compounding. Her worry begins. Get a call that evening from the leadership at fort hood texas the military base. Where at the time. Vanessa is a private first class. And they're asking if they had seen or heard from vanessa. Apparently she was expected to check in at four. pm but didn't and no one has seen her on the base since mid day or any of her colleagues at the base concerned at this point not nearly as concerned as her family. And that is super frustrating. For myra as you can imagine because at this point vanessa's family isn't just worried. I mean they're frantic and growing more frantic by the minute finally around midnight that night. Myra has had enough of the waiting. And she decides she's just going to go. Look for vanessa herself and she starts a three hour drive from houston to fort hood according to an episode of. Abc's twenty twenty called. i am vanessa. Myron meets with the base commander. First thing the next morning and finds out all of vanessa's her keys. Her wallet her credit cards and id's were found in the armory room where she'd been working that day according to the us army's website. They check her barracks and her unit and at the same time. People are doing all the things you'd expect to see with a missing persons case like asking around to co workers and friends calling local hospitals the works but no one has seen or heard from vanessa so at this point the military reports her missing local law enforcement and engages their criminal investigation division or the c. i. d. but it's not until the next day that the military police issue a bolo or be on the lookout to other police in the area and another day after that before they issue their first media alert asking for the public's help to locate vanessa at the same time myra and the rest of her tight. Knit family are bringing their own team together to look for vanessa. Putting up missing person posters posting to social media even putting up billboards on the roads leading into fort hood so the c. Ide- goes about its investigation retracing vanessa steps on the day that she went missing and they're able to pinpoint what seems to be her last movements or at least the last ones anyone saw on the base it turns out. Vanessa wasn't scheduled to work that day. According to a story by lee for crime online she was called into work whereas the reporter put it inexplicably on her day off sometime in the late morning or afternoon. Vanessa got a request to confirm serial numbers of weapons and equipment. She left her station and went next door to another arms room where another soldier was working and then after that she seemingly just disappeared. Investigators talk to the man station in that second room. The one that vanessa walked to his name is specialist. Aaron robinson and according to an article by jonny diaz maria cramer christina morales in the new york times. He tells them. There is nothing out of the ordinary to report. He read her. The serial numbers gave her the paperwork and then she left. Que did he say where she was heading. Not as far as i can tell but presumably to do whatever work she just taken on or can firm the serial numbers on some equipment so he was the last person to see her. No so actually doesn't seem like it because investigators also find three eye witnesses who had been outside smoking that they saw her walk across the parking lot that afternoon and just based on the timing it seems they saw her after. She left the second arms. But whatever happened after that. They have no idea so at this point. They're thinking either. She left the base on her own and disappeared on purpose or she was kidnapped now. Abandoning host is totally unheard of. It has happened before but it just seemed really unlikely since by this time. They done in extensive. Search the barracks and in the areas. Where vanessa worked and came up with nothing more than her keys and wallet like things they know. She would not leave behind if she truly left her own. Free will right right there things that you kind of need to have with you especially if you're just going to leave right but both the disappeared on purpose theory and kidnapping theory turn out to be hard to pursue because there are no other eyewitness sightings anywhere and know surveillance cameras covering the parking lot where vanessa was last seen. They even bringing search dogs to try and catch her sent. But there's just nothing however they're in luck because a physical trail isn't the only one investigators can follow there's a digital trail too and it's the digital trail that gins investigators their first break in the case. Today's episode possible by fab fit. You heard as and rave about how much we love fab funding for a while now like lease year. Maybe even two. "Apply Visit GEICO DOT COM for details. Again we ask what is going on on Sunday in an interview with Fox News. The president continued to push back on efforts to rename military bases named for confederate leaders. Take a listen because I think that Fort Bragg Fort Robertson. Lee All of these sports that have been named that way for. A long time decades and DECA. Military says they're funny. Okay what the military says I. DO I'm supposed to make the decision? Fort Bragg is a big deal. We won two world wars. Nobody even knows general break. We won two world. Wars go to that community where Fort Bragg is a great state I love that state go to go to the community say. How do you like the idea of Renaming Fort Bragg? And then what are we going to name it? You got to name it after the Reverend Al Sharpton. Wow. ooh, he can't make a statement you. Seeing! Nobody asked him to name anything after he's just, he's just he's. He's a child as another. Sure very often. No impact here. Here's the sad part of it. Here is the guy that a miracle put in the White House. We have no one else to blame. I got the electoral vote did it that he lost the popular vote. I got that. because. The electoral vote is a part of our archaic system because of the number of electoral 's and the votes. They put him in office and I got news for you. There's a large number of people who want him back in office again. Yeah Yeah and this. This is the sad part about it man to students not. He's not presidential at all. You can't think he is I. Don't care. I have to. Correct one thing that you said he. He does think that he won the popular vote. He says because voter fraud. "Attorney on record already picked me up and I remember the experience of going on the highway. It was so fast. Did you play music when I do that in the car? No no no. We could do one song thing at the end. That's what I meant when I said it's time to get push nasty. That is sorry I did. That was lost in translation interpreter. Comment no Wanda Sikes had called me and ask me like look of you in jail you got years to do and for Donald Trump was go on give you a in arden. Yeah would you take it come? I know I think that I think that more often than not we say what we do in a situation until we find ourselves in that situation and then we'd know exactly how we respond Hemsworth brothers of a threesome with me. My head Spun Fun. I said yes and let me tell. Ya Ya decision and I feel like they walk Taller now. Austrailia Taller so okay. You went to you. Remember the car. You're going fast. You went to your mom's. Where's your mom living? She was living in New Jersey. She still lives in New Jersey. Yeah she opened the door. There's there's like a cute little video of it on but that embrace I I can see it. You know. Yes Oh yeah. It's been a long time to be away from your loved. Ones for for one day is is a long time and so you know for me. It was it was more than seven years but you know for Friends of mine. Who was fifteen years lawn is it literally is like I have friends who are still still not home and be home for another decade. So yeah you don't really think about what every day must feel like it's you can't you can't yeah. All in does gruel. In two days awful person was a main door if if people were to have like one takeaway from listening and hopefully they enjoyed listening. But would you want them to most be a take away from your story or somewhere. They sort of get involved if they wanted to help somebody else out based on our conversation right and you know we're talking about redemption and we're talking about second chances and restorative justice. I think inevitably comes back to this if you lose sight any of if I lose sight and anyone else's humanity then what that means. I'm losing sight in my own humanity as we free people as people come home and as people get. Second Chances. Let's not let's not just. Oh it's fine. Just let them go. It's time time chokes. We go to a caller followed. You followed the light. Okay go on such a run into much of a run by ruin any rhythm. I'm but but thank you guys. Just thank you for the opportunity for sitting down with you and just having I was going to tell stories right and and not take myself so seriously no matter what happened and what will happen. I'm not calling it an album. I feel like there's a body of it and yeah maybe after this podcast. I'll get inspired to say well. Let's let's put six of those songs together and do something they'll get your guitar. I trust me okay I was GonNa go through your glove will but I would love to get that and saying is. "In prison before his sentence was commuted by George W Bush and now he lives here on. Martha's Vineyard with his beautiful family and we are so excited to have him on the show. Congrats you guys. What is this season? Listen I can't even believe we've actually. We've never met listener. I've heard you say you read knowledge. My or when and fire T. shirt. Please ask all day and he really wanted to give it a shot for tight here. We need to stop hearing. No I'm saying I'm just saying introduction of earth wind and fire in the sense that any sort of person With a base in HIP HOP CULTURE. Like it's just a fundamental The yeah almost Miss hip-hop because I'm on my hip hop black earth when fire. That was a guy who said Say Hip hop. It's not gonNA make Keith. Seventy eight seventy eight years old. And he's had a TV special. You might enjoy. It's called winding down on the porch. Appears I feel like we contemporaries. I feel I know. You're very young. And very old bob but but still almost miss hip hop brawl. You basically created the Fujii's when you were twenty one is that correct. I produced Had the had the pleasure of producing Working with and That album was a life changing fun. Times yeah I mean you're like I can imagine how much you WanNa talk about this and it's nothing but I just have to say that while you're here thank you and I don't I don't I don't say that with any sort of like dismissing being disingenuous now invariably. I found myself in in spaces just living life in those songs. Just come on. Yeah and and like they're just a part of the ethos and they stand up they. They've stood up overtime and I'm able to all my God. I can appreciate that. And I'm like what is they used to be number ten. But they come into. What Lord Anina do Keith Keith? Amion was missed hip hop not at all not did not in fact that was just so the hip hop you are. I'm sorry you're welcome. You won't be made me really angry. Angry just the way you did that really. I wish we had a slow Mo. Look at what you just did. And it's called paying tribute and and when you see someone pay tribute. Yeah Tears of joy sir. Down the whole I'll go through all no no. No no sure that's fine. That's and that's it and that's and that's it but I wear many hats and I apologize for all of them now thinking about redemption. You had the opportunity to educate people about thing. I think that every day is an effort for me to live in a manner. That is apropos restorative justice. And what do I mean by that? I mean you know I've had great heights and I've also had experienced great depths through the so-called belly of the beast and seven years of incarceration in fourteen year prison sentence. Were it not for you? Know then President Bush so to have this second chance to have an opportunity to be forgiven. It's been more than ten years that I've been home that have been on the other side of captivity and it's not something that that that I'd take lightly but it allows for me to live with prospective knowing what it's like not to have these freedoms not to have this moment this opportunity to to sit with you guys. This is not something that you know. It's just like Oh this is my twelve o'clock. No this means the world to have the opportunity to speak to you to just show up to be seen to see you and so thank you. Oh my God thank you. No one has ever been excited to be here. Never listened to us. This is like such different and thank you for that perspective. That's can you tell us about your extreme high to your extreme low. Can you walk us through that? Yeah my extreme. High being twenty-one nominated for that grammy for album of the year fast forward to call it a later when I was being groomed for my solo album in that experience and it comes out and we sell barely one hundred thousand copies worldwide and in one thousand nine hundred ninety seven nine hundred ninety eight hundred thousand copies less than was a brick and I was young and and and up until that point I I. I'd gotten everything. I was pretty entitled Super Arrogant and when I tasted that disappointment instead of looking in the mirror and asking damn what could I have done better? I just looked around me and everyone else failed me everyone. The record company failed me. Management fell me. My countless fail me my my my road. Managers Fail me the you get the point. Yeah that's how I feel right now. So Sony dropped me. They dropped me from my deal and I was like. Oh cool you know what I I'll get it. I get it and I wanted. I wanted to be able to find my path independently that Mary's up to me linking up with a guy who gave me an opportunity to involve myself in his criminal enterprise. And what did that entail? That entailed me going into my network of peeps and finding people who are interested in being curious for him curry to carry money to carry drugs carry whatever they wanted so. I became the middleman in two of those carriers were apprehended. They started cooperating with the feds immediately. Leading me to Picking them up at the airport which is something that never done up until that point actually picking up couriers but I'm hugging them at the airport on the sidewalk and putting the bag in the back of the cab. And that's when feds. Da Local law enforcement and this was Newark Airport so Jersey cop so it was like everybody enough. I remember it was like slow motion and my hands were cuffed and I was walking by an elderly couple and the woman said to presumably her husband. She said I saw this on television. I bet he didn't pay child support. God no I wanted to life so I went to trial in in Houston at the time had really long hair blow sleep down on my back. You know long dreads in my attorney. Who was a San Francisco Attorney? He had a long white pony tail. We walk into a lock them up to her boss. We got one or two in this case they saying hip hop I blew it. I blew trial and that led to Fourteen Year prison sentence. One hundred sixteen months for first time non violent drug offence. Yeah that was my my dance with the level. It's clearly a system put in place to keep a specific population down. I don't know what you mean. So I received executive clemency from an unlikely source on George W Bush at the end of towards the end of his presidency Can you talk about that? A little shock yeah. It was also. How did that happen? It happened because I had an never ever lost the support of my community and my family. Can you talk about your current work with campus shore? So I took a day job. You know rouse last. October directed a series of short films from Maria's Medicinal 's and the company that is Mary's capital partner offered me a seat at the table and private equity firm and we invest in global legal cannabis sector. That's hooking the. That's the coolest thing I've ever heard Thanks so much one other critical thing about this position which excites me and inspires me and frankly makes me proud. And it's being a person of color having a conviction which I do on my record and in those two boxes that I tick might exclude me from this industry. And and and the cannabis industry is getting a lot of flack rightfully so four excluding people of color people with convictions who arguably contributed to the expertise of the industry. We've set it up kind of question related to that so like so say place like Massachusetts legalizes. We which they have. How does that affect people that are in prison like is that are currently for nonviolent? First Time or whatever we're seeing territories like San Francisco in Oakland go into major expunged work to remove that box of conviction which is integral right. So there are steps. That need to be taken for restorative justice. That aren't just plug and play that we're still figuring out beyond just saying you no longer have that conviction like how how well you know. I lost twenty years of my life because of my connection to that substance.

You GotTa Pass. Why are you passing because Joel is worn out right Okay so he got pounded? I'm passive reported. I mean I have a story of redemption. Well let's hear it. That's great well. There was a general that when I was growing up like wanted to be and her name was Catherine so I got a bracelet made the just said Catherine at the mall and I was real jealous of her and she had long blond hair so I put a piece of yellow yarn on top of my head to pretend those blonde even though I know. That's not a very effective method. That's what I did and she. She was Catholic and I really wanted to be Catholic. I was very jealous of the idea of Catholicism in confessing and she had a little white pretty dress that she got to wear for her confirmation and I went over to the house played and she was like to see may communion dressed and she showed me her confirmation dress and I saw this. I solar confirmation dress. I want a little white Jesus fucking frock like that and I wanted it to be mine and I took a firmer and that was my goal in taking the play date. I'm like oh I love to play with you and your fucking Christ dress. Yes that's not really rejection. Okay okay coming around the bend. So I was really proud of my dressing as to put it on the mirror to private. Twirls with her with her communion communion dress but then I started to feel a little bit bad and I told my mom mom I gotTa tell you Shit. It's not good and she said you're going to walk down the street. You're going to give her dress back. You're going to tell her why you took it and you're going to say you're sorry and I did Was that the redemption story. That is how I think when Bob Marley wrote Redemption Song. I don't know it might not know about a community interest. I want you to feel safe to share in here but terrified unsettled. I WanNa make a note that demand that this story does not get cut from this podcast. Well because I think it's just the perfect segue to talk about a very talented individual who is unjustly like had his life taken away by oppressive drug laws that affect people of color. Yeah so let's get right into that. Thanks for setting that up perfectly rain so I got drunk in the break you guys. I'm sorry you right. In the face redemption I am having a heart attack. I gotTA redemption. We have office vineyards suburbia as you life. I don't even let we need to just like move off. Okay we are so lucky to have gianforte on the show. They weren't boastful about it but you you know you guys know. They felt really good like this is their year to make a run. It's yours free flick body in the experience and a lot of positions. I a lot jeff especially at that running back position that we just saw wide receiver and their schedule sets up very well for them that ohio say that will michigan state you know michigan in the the west is wide open. "Now. Let's take a look at today's playstation player impact rating and we're looking at dylan moses right now. He has a player impact rating of eighty four which is thirty eighth among inside linebackers. That's great and everything but the bad news for alabama is that he tore his a._c._l. On tuesday and so he's out for the season a freshman now has to take his role on in week one against duke and there's just injuries that abound there's two starting linebackers that are gone for alabama obama. I mean do we have concerns or filling those roles especially this late when you're so close to preparation out from a game and dylan moses goes down tough blow alabama as a team as for defense. They really relied on this young man to call the plays call the signals gary by an imperfect alignment lyon. Make sure they get the checks. He was pretty much the tour of the defense so that i can give you some perspective of how important dylan moses was to alabama's defense deepen so huge blow. They're already finished the position but this is a guy who was actually like a coach on the field. He's an alpha male. He's going to be sorely loss oss by alabama defense. David and it's important that you can't replace him first of all as a player because he's a top twenty draft pick in the n._f._l. Even with the knee but but you are what you said about the leadership because here's the thing you can play freshman right but you danger but i have somebody who knows the television. I play defense. I know we look like big dumb. Animals often formations ball get ball ball ball okay so when you're already counting on a freshman next to him and you had to make the calls and tell them listen all you gotta do this right but now the front has to be lined secondary there has to be in coordination and they'd take somebody that's played that position and been in those battles listen. They'll be converse duke and they're gonna be fine. I everyone on this is going to outscore. Almost everybody in the regular season but when you get to clemson and you get the georgia in the s._e._c. championship game this is when you're gonna look back and you're gonna go man. It'd be nice to have moses right now. Yeah shane lee. He's the new freshmen. That's got. Step up into that role and again. He doesn't know what to expect. It's birth by fire for him. <hes> but alabama's defense they already had to replace a five n._f._l. Draft picks which i know it's not the the alabama constantly like that's what you do but it's going to be a concern without dylan. Moses take a look at our fridays plate. Here are the notable games okay which one is intriguing to you to david about miss state. I would love to see at some point. I repeat right is there. An offense turns like is there. Is there any office to be found in michigan. State fans frustrated at some point. You've got to make changes and find something but you saw the work. You get dinged off off a year ago and it's rod receivers to slow this down. What is this offense looked like. I know the defense is going to be really good but can they get four passes yeah yeah they say that lewinsky. Let's is a good and camp. I did get bid seriously by the injury bug last season and i think they're out to approve. Their last season is just now who they are so watch what channel expires. I'm excited about this game today. But how about colorado state versus colorado in state rivalry you got you got mel tucker who came came over from georgia. He's a longtime assistant coach. The head coach of the colorado buffs. I'm expecting a great deepest physically. I want to see what they bring table so i'll keep it out on this colorado state versus colorado game tuck it. Hey come on bay..

"It's like seven degrees of an issue. They're gonna play everybody and including georgia including l._s._u. At the end of the season auburn <hes> clemson. They're gonna have a lot of things to say there's going to be there's going to be an web and web attached to everybody in cannot afford to make the mistakes okay and that they made against georgia tech because a._m. Will capitalize on those turnovers and can. I give you a low key staff. I know it's texas state and you guys don't want to read into it may forced. I four turnovers. They only had seven season ago floor intercept. That's good brand so mine belco. You've got to be feeling pretty good about that. Let's talk about the game that we are here for. That's oregon and auburn and take a look at our blimp worthy of player presented by goodyear. It's just an herbert obviously the q._b. He gave up the n._f._l. Draft this past year to return for senior the what the ducks do for twenty nine touchdowns last season but the completion percentage dip to fifty nine percent and he completed sixty percent of his throws two seasons ago <hes> justin herbert herbert. He's a veteran. We know what to expect almost from him. Can we expected against auburn. I think so i think the kid option of talent was a year ago. All the throws a similar to lawrence what i install last night. This kid just herber is is just to me secretly surprisingly athletic. You look at a gas six six years. He can really move but he gets out there on the perimeter. He's he's a long strider. He may run away from defenses so this. I can't wait to see him against an s._e._c. Defense on the road and it's not to me. It's not as important horton about the first group and we talk about that auburn defense. It's insane. Can he get the other guys involved case scramble around and run and get first downs and make it a tempo game that you're not going to let up and just pound auburn. It's not going to happen but if they can do stick. It moves outside later rounds. They'll have a chance to win. Justin herbert twenty-eight started thirty throwing sixty three touchdowns in his career and last year. They were second in the pac twelve in total offense so it's still going to be fun to watch him against auburn in week. One and that's the game. That's coming up saturday night from jerry okay so you can catch that game on a._b._c. An infant problem probably shade. David teleki me yeah. You'll be on the sidelines all right. We're still waiting for the weather to roll in here. We're going to roll into alabama's defense and maybe some question marks. We have for that. Hello everybody you're looking live at fans. Ville college football utopia with the rivers flow with ice cold dr pepper with the air smells a fresh cut grass artificial turf and smoked meats along with a radio.

"This fort on its seven to save list in two thousand nine around up at risk stork sites that need help. And according to Katie piece communications director of the preservation league of New York state, there are no current plans to rehabilitate, the site it joins the ranks of other historical places and objects of significance like the gunboat Spitfire, which was part of the American fleet that contributed to the Saratoga victory in seventeen seventy seven or the John van Heusen house, which looks worse for wear but is a early. Eighteenth century sample of Dutch set. Along the Hudson. The plumb Bronson house inches also just rapidly deteriorating and the magdala Nyland, which has an ancient past, as a stopping place for native American populations or first nations and Europeans came later. The historic south street, seaport, the burden ironworks museum. Those are the seven, but there are many, many more. And when you look around, whether it's in the US, or in other countries, I'm sure there's no shortage of decaying pieces of history that should be preserved if you've ever driven through Tennessee yellow bed, but not not not not a time. Give me the scoop, Tennessee is there must be some government programme. I can say this. I have family there. There must be some government programme to make sure that every body has at least one to two decanes Barnes in their fields and you can even see when you drive on the interstate. But I'm always. Baffled by that, you know what I mean because these barns are in use, but they're ready for one match to make them. Very similar to driving some of the rural roads in, in Georgia like between Atlanta and Athens, for example, or Gusta an Athens, lots of big open fields with just a single ramshackle barn in the middle. And it looks like it's leaning kind of at a candid angle like it could fall down with just a light breath of wind wire aggress countries, especially if you drive this example, for people who don't know how big this state is, especially driving from Atlanta to savannah, down on Georgia's small Atlantic coast. Have you made that drive? I have it's been a minute, at the long long and it's not a particularly exciting for some people. But it's what, how long does it towers from here to savannah, Atlanta. I believe it's about six hours. Six hours. Yeah. Six long hours of full of full of history and full of things that look the worst for wear. This episode of ridiculous. History is brought to by navy. Federal Credit Union navy federal has a mission to put.

When they see the fort rising out of the mist, it'll feel like a distant memory. Finally, recalled the guard will open up the gate. Even if it's getting dark. No questions asked and the locals will part as this figure moves past them as if they send something to and win this certain person steps inside the ruins, the past will come alive before their very eyes. It won't be terrifying. It won't be disturbing it. Both be some ghostly trap out of this. Traveler will rise. The reincarnated soul of Princess rotten oddity returned at last. The curse will be lifted and the ghost Avangard. We'll be able to re enter their true karmic cycles of rebirth. Life will return and the dead will depart. Perhaps perhaps that is why people are drawn here. Why you might be drawn here. Perhaps you are the reincarnation of rotten petite and the salvation Abban car fort.
