"Right. Thank you very much Eddie no problem. That's news idiot Sevens Eddie Robinson. Harris County has seen record turnout in the first days of early voting wealth Fort Ben Counties experienced technical delays. Tell us more we're joined now by Rice University political science professor Bob Stein Good Morning Sir. Good morning, how are you? I'm well, thanks a more than one hundred, twenty, eight, thousand registered voters in Harris County cast ballots in person on Tuesday that was the first day of early voting and other nearly one hundred, fifteen thousand followed suit according to the county clerk's total on Wednesday. When is the last time? Harris County saw early voter turnout numbers like this. Never. Never I think it's unprecedented it's not unusual and unexpected notwithstanding what happened in Fort Ben. But these are unusual times and I think the response of the Harris County clerk and election administrator has been probably quite quite admirable. They've done everything. You can expect to see increases. We've raised surveys and voters told us in back in March and April what? They wanted cirque responded by the typically increasing hours and days along with the governor will mater I thought other bold decision very early to extend early voting and you saw not only in Harris. County. But in many other jurisdictions, physically the large metroplexes, not just more days what your governor was responsible for but more locations and taking what we call you save steps everything's. For the poll workers to social distancing mass recovering, and we survey voters just less than ten days ago they told us. This is what we want voters to vote in person early because of course, they can vote by mail only really over sixty five. So what we sort of as a response when government does the things that voters want sometimes every about every time voters responded we saw that yesterday notwithstanding some problems and some other jurisdictions like fortnum. And I don't want to get to that does this turn out this heavy turnout offer any particular insight to you about the election itself? Do we know whether this a because it's in Harris County whether that reflects voter support of one party over another one candidate over another. I think what it reflects again are our surveys shown this The most recent ones that there's a real skewing everything gets polarize everything is politicized wearing a mask social distancing and so it was already and not who you're voting for president trump or by spending. It's how you're voting Republicans are decidedly uninterested in voting by mail, and maybe because of the president, maybe because of fears of voter fraud or common fears at the Post, office won't be able to and will their nails but we're seeing almost a bifurcation nationally here in Arras. County most Republicans want to vote at least in person before mostly on election day most. Of the early voting in Harris County Hugh Towards Democrats, and that is particularly particularly true of the vote by mail. So if you think of early voting is two ways, you can do it by mail or you can do it in person that is huge towards the Democrats Election Day, and of course, some impersonal voting will be disproportionately among Republicans so. There's there's a lot behind that but I think the clerk have done not only hours around the state is..

"The world's going to keep coming to you but at the same time is there anything different left england. You know it's still a land of low wages and high high prices rich have different law than the poor. They're still factories. They're still prisons is probably no work houses anymore. Thank you and maybe maybe the minds. I don't have child labor in them anymore. But in the early nineteen seventies they still had a lot of minds coal mines and coal for the factories factories and you know they've they've made an indictment of england one hundred and fifty years ago that is still absolutely spot on today like so. Where is our progress in this world again this would here's another episode that could really been great or further <hes> story point that could have been delivered but i'm sure somebody who's running the show up. Now's not speculate macular fiction enough and as i'm watching it all the way through this this this episode i already have pitcairn in my mind right. I already have mutiny neon bounty on my mind that these are the descendants of some criminals were hiding on a rock in the middle of nowhere and then you get it to the end and suddenly it's like no these are these are pilgrims you know these are these are people heading off to a new land to find a place place to live their life and not suffer the injustices of the world around them and it throws a complete difference in my mind through a complete different spin on this group of people even though they're not the mutineer you know they're not the mutineers but you know in my mind there is there's no nobleness in them being on this island and then suddenly at the end boom nope there was this was about making a better world not escaping from your wrong-doings so yeah yeah i i. I enjoyed the episode despite the fact that it's you know it's a downer well. It's it's it's a good story. I mean okay. I i granted. I didn't like the way that left turn at the end but in terms of what they did give us. It was very well presented. There was some good content. I mean <unk> was sound it raise some good questions didn't explore them fully enough but at least it raised them. I mean so yeah. I i would say this. This was an episode i mean i can't say that i enjoyed it but i can acknowledge it as being a good one. I also thought it was amusing that here's one of the few episodes where quist throws his weight around a little bit. You know not with oh. It's gonna wanna destroy the world or anything like that a he's. He's throwing his moral weight behind the treatment that these people are getting and he actually gets the ministry to back act down and go all right. We'll let them have the option if they want to go back to the island will let them go back to the island and then of course he's like no sorry changed my mind uh-huh but i think it's interesting that that the ministry wasn't nearly so much a cartoon villain in this one as they are in some of the other episodes true yes they had their reasons but and then you know they're like well now quit. It's up to you to convince them to not go back because we already he told them we'd let him go. So now. You're on the you're on the spot here which speaking of which that island would be somewhere in the south pacific nick mean way out there were talking you know like easter island and beyond and kind of stuff really really remote how much time elapsed for avoid quist cut that expedition and then he gets back for the episode. You know it's like ooh. I found something in the fish don't and then the next scene is is back in his office with ridge. What's that like six weeks later. Good night. He had not considered it was it was very. I'm sure that that is not an easy place to get to you. Don't fly in obviously they came in by a book called the britannia britannia which the top probably unlikely for an island about coming out of b._g. But okay but anyway what other thing i wanted to kick around was the a bit with the teak factory. <hes> at i wasn't entirely sure in my notes is i'm watching the scene where the guy talking with isaac. The boss is talking with isaac for his initial thing and i'm like i just kinda. Get the feeling that this guy is of the the impression that this workforce is not gonna be the typical lazy british union guy. I these are going to be hard working. People and i can work them exploiting them. I kinda got that feeling but i couldn't quite place ace words on it until he walks out and then she says well what about pays union minimum well. He didn't even talk about it so hey. I guess that's what he wants. Doc minimum wages. He doesn't care like and then he turns around and goes on. I think you know we should call the press and get some good publicity for our company. It's like it's it's it's kinda sleazy and and you think he's a cartoon villain or at least i was thinking he there's another cartoon moustache twirling boston spicing and then he turns around a few select like listen. I've been hearing a lot of good stuff about you. All wanna put you in our management training program program because we like to promote from internal and i think you could be the guy so he's he's not. He's just a tough boss yeah. He turns around and he he's he's like hey that's. That's good good for you. You find a good worker and you promote them internally fantastic i and it again. I think that's part of the i think lewis marks wrote this and we've seen louis marx wrote several of the older episodes of doctor do some of which i cannot name actually most of them i can't name i think the french revolution the reign of terror i think is his which is not a good endorsement actually but you know he's. He's done a good job of putting these people together and not make them entirely stereotypes. Even the girl who is was isaacs. We would be wed on the island. Oh yeah but now you know we're off the island. All all bets are off. I get that on the island. There's only a few girls and so men and women so in you'll have much choice. Now you get a choice. That's a very pragmatic attitude. Dude you know it makes it sound like it was strictly an arranged marriage which probably was did. Did they have affection for one another. I mean what if you grow up together together in a situation like that and you know your whole life that and you don't hate each other as they clearly didn't hate each other. No i think it was very affectionate so it. It seemed like it just accepted. It's part of their community part part part of the community values but now he's he's got a bigger bigger picture. He has a different perspective that he's working with now and that tells him that he does not have to follow by those vary but it's not. It's not him that saying that it's her. He's the one going off to london and whatnot but she is the one that's saying. I understand i get this. It's like it's like that's i i. I don't know how to take that. It's very pragmatic at the same time. It almost feels like she thinks of herself. As cattle and i livestock i know again. It's just like the just pokes so many things in this episode. It's just so many little things you could only do so much yeah and you know they're going to go off and die and they also. I didn't mention the recap there. Is that scene where we're talking about the world getting smaller but there's a scene where quist says look if you go back to the island the pollution of the world's going to kill you that you're gonna live shorter lives and you're going to die and thomas. Isaac moms comes out and says well isn't that true with all the pollution in the the stuff here and like all right yeah. You got going on there. <hes> the environment does kill us. Our environment is nasty and is gonna kill us so again. It's that it's that themes of the earth being a mess but yeah let's see yeah. I don't know that i have anything else anything. You've got no not really i mean we pretty much covered all the all the salient points that that i observed and noted o'leary's he's wanting did you at any time think that as the story was going on when isaac went to london i honestly thought that he was gonna walk in front of the car and get killed you know actually right and that was going to precipitate the whole really live in this world thing you're right. You're right. I i i. I didn't write that down. Your did observe that <hes> because he seemed like huck cross lights. Imagine what is this. What what is this witchcraft. I was like he had no idea what the heck it was or how to how to work with it but no he he got across without any problem. I i have to admit i i would find that fascinating to see how someone would deal with that because you see it and you know you see science fiction t._v. Shows you bring somebody in from the feud the past and they come to our world and cars and they just like walk in front of the <unk> even kurt does it in in the signature forever city on the edge of forever rather. Just walk walk in front of cars so it's like you don't have cars in the twenty third century i think you do they just don't have wheels right but they fly yeah so when when you some cowboy gets transported the president he always walks in front of traffic and somebody's harmonious thorough dislike. I don't really think people would walk in front of a a big metal thing barreling down on them unless they didn't see it right. I i feel like i feel like you would be standing there on the streets and you would see the all the cars going down the streets and you'd see the people crossing the streets in certain ways and you would follow their example. It's not like he was wasn't a lot of pedestrians where he was too so i mean just to i have been in taiwan. I have seen freaking dogs that walk with the crosswalks. They're they're they're trained or at least they figured it. They've learned they've learned for themselves. I've seen the stray dogs running. Well not so much in the last s few years but you know ten twenty years ago when there didn't they didn't like dogs much and they were more of a stray animal problem they would walk around and they would they would just go up to to the red light and eight wait with a crowd of people when the light change they across the street and you dislike. That's amazing of course in some instances. The dog would only have three legs. You'd be like wonder how he lost probably the first time he didn't cross the street with the light eight so maybe it's not the best example anyway well i think i think that's it then for doom. Watch the islanders <hes>. I don't know what the next one is. It doesn't really matter whatever it is. Stay tuned fort ben. Thank you for joining me sure thing listeners. I do you hope you will join us all again. Next time on fusion patrol cheers.

"Pittsburgh Story from CBS news the coming storm entering retirement broke m. Bankrupt h really concerning and you look at the number of Americans. Over the age of sixty five better filing for bankruptcy eight hundred thousand, total bankruptcies filed across the country in one year one hundred thousand of, them are for those, in households headed by seniors about twelve percent and what's causing. This cutbacks in the social safety net raising the retirement age requiring seniors to pay more of out of pocket healthcare, cost and you go from pensions where you are guaranteed to get. Money because the company had to put in two four one ks where you don't have to if you don't want to and now we're in the mess that we're going to talk more about at Jimmy Meredith, joining us from Hefferin until Hilton on the disk institute of Pittsburgh Newsline and Jamie this is, clearly multifaceted and it looks as though the way the numbers are. Playing out it's going to get a whole lot worse before it, gets, any better well too scary number you you. You you, think one, hundred thousand out of eight. Hundred thousand that's one out of. Eight which which isn't a, big, number you know you think. Of eight people that you know one of them is is potentially on this this past of bankruptcy. And and you mentioned you know you mentioned a lot of things. That causes it you know there's a lot of people that are blindsided, by a medical van or layoff or an accident or something like that, but the reality is, we all need to be prepared for that people blame corporations. For moving to four one ks what we as individuals we need to be responsible and we need to make smart, decisions and I think a lot of folks out there continue to. Say wow we'll deal with that tomorrow deal without tomorrow next thing you know you're sixty five years old you have And saved you don't have that emergency fund and you get. Blindsided by bad luck of life and in your names in one. Of these articles let's talk about what people can do to protect, themselves, as much as possible when it comes to. Entering the, retirement years, and avoiding something like this. From happening What would be the? First thing that you would suggest well the first thing everybody should do is is put a plan, in place ask those questions if you're fifty five or forty five? Or thirty five you've got to say well what's going to happen when I retire, how much is it going to cost me to live am I on the right path and my, and my making, the right decisions in my saving enough my putting money in my. 401K am I invested the right way all of these. Questions are are difficult ones? And we don't have all the? Answers but you have to start? Pudding answering as many questions as you? Can and then talk to friends talk? To professionals? Talk to people that. Have been there and fill in those blanks the next step would be start having the uncomfortable conversation what happens if I die what, happens if my spouse dies what happens if I get sick what happens if my spouse gets sick what happens if I lose the paycheck what happened just my One of my kids get sick. How am I going to take care of that and those are very unpleasant uncomfortable conversations but you need the. You know that's the reality of life these things happen? And, you need to make sure you're in a chore do you need to. Make sure you've. Got life insurance you need to make sure that you've, got health insurance disability, insurance, that's why these things are there then? You pull it all together and and you've gotta have? The discipline to live within that plan have the discipline to live below your means not everybody and, then some people heading into retirement feel a little bit entitled about? Things they feel like they've worked their whole life so they they are entitled to, retire at age sixty two or eight sixty five sometimes you you've got to work longer sometimes you, just have a, build up the financial resources and you've got to work until seventy. Or beyond let me ask you this what about what. Do you think about holding? Off claiming social security for as? Long as you can I think? For a lot of folks that make? Sense there are there are big discounts? And taking? Social security Early and for folks that, are more modest means that could be. A big difference you can get a significant jump especially folks with longevity if you've got longevity in your life and there's a, good chance, you'll be living into your. Late eighties early nineties getting the most as you cannot have social security now if you are of high. Means or not along jetty. Where you have some some illness that shortens your life expectancy it might make sense to take benefits. Early I was listening to Jill Schlesinger talk about this and one of the things that she brought up was Parents need to, establish a, backbone, and say no to their adult children because so many of them are not just dipping. Into savings there borrowing on behalf of their adult children and, giving them, a, bit, of a help as they make their way in life all we. See that even, the young, young parents young families trying to save up. For college education you can't bankrupt yourself to. Provide for your child it's it's like rescuing a swimmer you can't put your life in jeopardy to to save somebody else. And you've got to be smart, and you gotta have. That backbone and we see you know again children of parents get into a medical situations where you feel, like you, need to help but I think a lot of. Folks, kind of fuel this this lifestyle this this this TV lifestyle that people feel like they need to be on they, feel like you know you can't drive a. Ten year old car you can't go go with, last year's close you have to have that latest phone When you. Have to have all of. This all of these new stuff that pushes many people beyond their financial, means and again. That's the biggest, mistake that, everybody makes his is not living within their means Jamie Meredith with Hefferin Tillerson and then you look at the issue of medical expenses and how that really comes into play granted you're going to have more issues when it comes to health as you grow older but when you talk. About that personal responsibility not only do we need that from a fiscal perspective but we also need, it from our own bodies health perspective to and. I realize you're not a doctor. But it just seems to make sense doesn't it well exactly if. You've got a you've got to, live a healthy lifestyle you've got to exercise you've, got to, eat, right and then you also to look at what medicine does for us you know think. About two generations ago you had a heart attack and you, weren't expected, to, live, now you have a heart attack at fifty in in you could. Live til ninety, so medicine, has given us a great quality of life. In many cases but that's expensive and and. Certainly you know we could spend another Our talking about how our healthcare system. Is broken, in many ways but you, have to be prepared for that you haven't we have to. Look into that no matter what the problems are without. You need to figure out. The way to best adjust within your own family exactly Jamie Meredith joining, us from Hefferin.
