Confirmation That Georgia Tech Fans Will Support Herschel Walker
"So anyway, I thought, you know what? I want to give Joe from LJ a shout out. Because if you remember, Joe from LA, so Herschel Walker, so I got up and gave my remarks and a Herschel sitting right in front of me. And he seemed to enjoy the speech and gave me a very kind of gave me a standing ovation last night. And so I thought, you know what? I'm going to try this and see if it works. And because you remember Joe from Ella Jay as soon as I said Joe from ellijay, people started laughing and applauding. Yes, I was going to say he's definitely a celebrity. He's like, maybe Joe Walter run for office. Maybe. I would get behind. So anyway, so I mentioned I said, Herschel, Joe Fermat Jay tells me that even the Georgia Tech fans are going to be voting for you and the whole place went nuts. So I guess it's true. It's a Georgia miracle. Yes, it is. But we love our good friend Joe from LA and it was great to know he's got a lot of fans in Forsyth county.

"Frank in Forsyth Montana good evening Good evening jumbo To see when I point out is that back to 50s the great days of the 50s we were in influencing the whole world but in the United Nations with experiments for everybody because science is universal It knows no boundaries Even Einstein said that it was not our national secrets that unions and non unions negotiate with and it's a sad I donated a magneto from an old crank telephone to a science teacher in the 6th grade He didn't even know the principle of how to make a simple electromagnet from a coil of wire and an iron nail It just I mean just because he was a union person he was able to get a job but he couldn't teach science I mean the education field I think teachers have got a monopoly but to get a job teaching in most public school systems you have to have an education degree which as you note does not necessarily guarantee that you know the subject at hand And that's rather unfortunate There are a lot of extremely qualified people out there who a know the subject matter and B know how to teach it to often disinterested students but they haven't taken the appropriate education courses the indoctrination courses at some school I'll defer to max Nelson here No Jim I think your response is right on the nose there I mean I think we have just generally not just an education but I think just generally as a country we have overvalued formal education and undervalued practical education And you can see that in a number of contexts I mean you can see that when the deflating value in a college degree you can see that in the increasing wages that it's possible to earn doing apprenticeship programs or working in the skilled trades those types of roles is practical knowledge practical working with your hands kind of roles I think have really been undervalued in recent years And it produces a number of a number of problems But in education specifically in public education I do think teachers unions have obviously a big role to play in the workforce in who becomes a teacher and who stays at teach A lot of the types of formal education requirements that we see now for entering the public school profession From the advocacy of groups like teachers unions And they're not the only ones who do this I mean there are industries around the country that try to make it difficult for not competition but they want to limit the number of people in the field They want to create barriers to entry make it make it harder for someone to do what they do so that they can create scarcity and charge more for the service that they provide And teachers unions are always talking about a teacher shortage I mean if you look at the headlines there's some savvy education reporters who attract these things for years And it's fun to see them circulate recirculate every now and again headlines from ten 15 years ago about teacher shortage teacher shortage And of course that works in the interest of teachers unions for the same reason that it works anywhere else They get to demand more And they get to try to justify higher wages and costs And again they do that by making it harder for new people to enter the profession So that's a problem for sure And full disclosure here I am not anti union far from it I am not particularly friendly toward public sector union for reasons I have outlined that I'm a member for many decades of the sag after screen actors guild American federation of television and radio artists which I think does an excellent job of looking out for its members in its negotiations with private sector communications companies For the record One 8 6 6 5 O Jimbo one 8 6 6 5 O 5 four 6 two 6 and for a max Nelson a freedom foundation dot com We go to Dave in Tyler Texas "And we were all living in dine with him trying to be more entertaining than accurate and You know that's all. I can say we've enjoyed the popcorn though. Well i enjoy it too but my question for you sir. Just who's gonna upset you more this year the yankees or the jets. The yankees went thirteen in a row tumbling submits the pitching is shaky at best and then history of the dropping bombs all over camden yards and the jets role. They'll always be the jets. My other question is my buddy. Tj cowboys set. Let's go whom does he want as backup quarterback for deck Can noon or colin kaepernick. And why was in his name. Brought about when qb's were were look for. Well the only thing i know about cooper rush is that he's got canada's greatest raw band on the back of his jersey. The playoffs baseball going on hockey is next month. Gentlemen be kind always choose the middle key ice capturing abner louima. He hasn't played a game since. What twenty sixteen. You can't not the toughest position the play in sports. You can't go that long. Dallas and jerem- ben and jerry's success jerry's going to be the one who brings kapernick back in the fold. It's just the timing. Just it's too long too long too much time as pass camp should happen. I mean cooper rushes a. is a safety net. That's ready to be sliced in half by by by the rest of the nfc east and the rest of the nfl with all due. Respect to coop rush. Which is you know is the least respectful way to do it. If i really respected it. I would've done it in advanced so if unfortunately that goes down. Then sure cam. But i'd rather have camden cooper rush again. No disrespect but you gotta get cam in now. Have to get him in him up to speed. I just don't know if that's going to happen. I'm not sure but added those two. I'd rather have cam to answer the question. Well that's what i said cam was was cut loose on like the place that makes sense for him is there. I mean what what quarterback situation would have to be so decimated for him to get a shot to start now off the couch in two thousand twenty one and again. I know you know. Peter king had mentioned He was on my He was on the halftime show of westwood. One of monday night. Football go by the lettuce. Great it was great. And just all i know. Is that the first game i ever did is a host of monday night. Football turned out like that. You're welcome america. johnson. Direct correlation johnson. After i did my halftime it went off the rails But peter king pointed out. It looks like he's unvaccinated. And that is that is a factor like you're going to bring in somebody's unvaccinated who who now could be somebody who's possible to be out ten days if he's a close contact now you know i mean it's it's it's something that you don't you have to add on if you're bringing somebody in in the middle of a season and that was brought up in terms of washington because ron rivera was his head coach when he first got out of auburn his head coach in his super bowl. Mvp season but once again. It's kyle gig not camps in d. c. so. I don't know what what have to happen. Like two quarterbacks would have to go out significantly to get cam off. Let's call them up. Let's go right now. I think it's still early. It's still early. I i just don't know twenty twenty one's gonna look like for cham. Well the great thing is guys. We've got sixteen. More weeks of football is not great. More games yeah. Sorry seventeen more weeks. That's we're gonna have to get used to it. Yes we're gonna have to get used to a week eighteen we're gonna have to get used to hey stats are going to be different or the way i led the show that you don't wanna start to. Well how many own two teams could have made the playoffs. That didn't had there been next game an eighteenth week in the nfl. You get one more shot at it. Oh and two teams that might change. Only three might be the new. I'm serious orange. Was the new black. You know like to might not be the death now that it has been in previous years only thirty owen. Two teams made the playoffs since nineteen ninety thirty and none in the last two seasons. So there's that john roberts our number three major injury piece of news in the national football league that might affect your fantasy team coming up in our number three so after after yesterday's show I was gonna do some extra voiceover work for the epoch. Nfl films produced on all-time great football players voiced the first episode brett. Farve us coming out. That's how many jobs you've got right. I got a few edna plate from sues. You know yesterday. And i'm i'm hurrying home because you know we we. We had a lot going on on her plate. After yesterday's show reason why i bring this up is Sues calls map. She's like hey you haven't gotten your teeth clean while i have this appointment. I can't make can go styrene my schedule. I went i to go. And i'm going. I'm sitting in the dentist office. And you know there's a couple people behind the glass but it's all really in cold there's workers going in and out safe you. We're all master. That's not reason. I bring it up. I'm sitting there in the waiting room and it says please do not use your cell phone. You know here. But i'm in the mode where i'm constantly looking at videos and i'm concentrating to keep up straight on south for here so there's a video that pops up and i'm like i gotta listen to it and i listened to it out loud. You know. try to put it close to my ear. But people heard it and this was the video. Go head roy. If a couple the other older guys about this saying the little coaching has not because he has so many but there are a few like he always talking about touch diesel. Or or you know suck knees or all that charlie fall down. I rented before you even get my teeth claim. I got cut steve. We've got an update lane. Karen add some valuable insight on savings. "Twenty how things work out. In life. That in a way pete carroll might not be going for his second consecutive lombardi trophy with the seattle seahawks if it weren't for november twenty seven nineteen ninety-four when pete carroll is head coach of the seven and four new york jets. Went up against the miami dolphins in the next guest here. On the richeisenshow. Dan marino decided to fake spike. The jets lost that game. Their last four games fired. Pete carroll and here is dan marino sitting here at super bowl. Nine it's all your fault. maybe not my fault. maybe it's really good for shirts. You're doing maybe. it's your handiwork. Your credit for seattle success damning rich eisen show. Have you ever spoken about that. Have you ever revisit. I've talked to a little bit about and there was some other guys. Some guys who coached jimmy. Keeping brown was running back coach. He's still out of seattle now. Oh yeah some other guys that were on that staff and what was the. What are the contents of that conversation that we got him fired site claim to fame. Pete carroll fired home. I god funny and not truly is amazing. How things work out. 'cause he goes from there. He's a great football coach. Obviously i mean that's just that year what happened that year for him just was bad luck. I guess i'll put it in a way to you. Look at tom brady and what he has become. It's always from what what what built him an end adversity and things of what what happened in michigan and he was swapping out quarters and snaps withdrew henson and indians pick one ninety nine th overall and he got his opportunity. Ryo and drew got her right. What was that for you. What was that moment for you that you were always using a fire for your career. I think not that. I mean i. It probably was. You know when i got drafted late in the first round. I'll still happy. I gonna draft in the first round but they're not going to be drafted higher. You know maybe in the middle rounds ended up being you know at the end that around and there was a lot of teams that i thought they were gonna pick me to didn't so maybe that gave me that little bit of edge you know i would say You know when you're to work out to get in the best shape of my life. Be ready to go to be the quarterback of my. I would say that probably that was probably it for me as far as appropriate. What we all the other thing. We'd be when i tore my achilles. You know told my achilles jerem back from that you know because taking you know. Sometimes you take things for granted in life you know. i think. At that time. I played so many games that are rolling for eleven years and all that and had a lot of success and then i turned my killys and now i can't. Do you know that i love doing for such a long time and wasn't sure i was going to be playing right and that's kind kinda hits you right in the forehead sometimes too and in many ways if that hadn't happened scott mitchell might not have been on the biggest loser that's slot. "But he comes around and understand him as kind of avatar of a new athlete. Not just a black the but a new athlete. And i think they both Particularly ali who's a master showman and promoter understood they could ride each other's coattails even with the antagonism at the heart of it i think is a deep love and cosell really understood the change agent that ali was and he came around him and he helped a lot of us. I remember watching stuff with my dad. And howard cosell was the first person that gave me permission to love. Mohammed ali at a time when people were still just so Opposed to him for the change of the name of the bragging for the changing to muslim and all that sort of stuff and then the antiwar stuff i was agreed with that but it it it cosell's an important part of this story an important dimension that guy from brooklyn who kinda realizes that he can go far on this guy and this guy can go far on him and that what they're celebrating is the essential humanity of both people. I love it. And i'm sure you've heard the billy crystal story of what muhammad ali leaned over and said to him and asked him during cosell's funeral right. You heard that story can tell me you said billy crystal says. He's sitting next imam ali at the funeral. Caskets right there in front of an leans over and says do you think he's got his to pay on their. It's what he said that's what he said. That's why chris. I may not just unbelievable. Well i'm honored that. I could give you a little tidbit after your your documentary. As in the canon get ready to be always learn stuff after the fat and go. Oh man you know. Somebody told me that you know the parkinson's taken over and that that ali was not aesthetic but just it was so sad that he couldn't get up at all the different Things at frazier's funeral and everybody's jumping up and john and finally at the any he gets up but he can't stop clapping and one has to sort of stop the arms from clapping. They just broke. My heart just broke my heart. And i came out back at beijing. Never forgave him. Though ali apologize to him. I cannot wait to see it. Ken burns thank you for coming on again. Starting sunday eight. pm eastern on pbs. The poor four part series muhammad ali. Let's do this more often. I really enjoyed john. And ken burns right here on the richeisenshow locked in right. Well that's going to be looking over at you during the conversation like your urine tj. I know that. I am definitely great. Great maybe i'll do the double dip mohammed ali. Bobby on sunday night yeah. I'm really looking forward to this. Guy's gonna be you know man like you know. I told you guys before like my parents separated early. So i didn't really have a lot of sports stories with my dad but boxing was one of the things that we shared. So you know when you read see spot run books when your kid learn how to read. I didn't do like my dad. Had an old chestful of ring and ko and boxing magazines So as a kid. I'd sit there and i'd read ibook these magazines and that's how i learned how to read was reading. Boxing mags. no kidding. Came here so ali was. He's he's my sports idol. When that when ali died it was a saturday morning. I'm going to be honest. I sat on my couch for like our straight and just ball over man. I never met. Nexus i think a lot of people at that filling with manali and to the good again taking on a subject matter of somebody who's already been covered in documented in his life. I mean like what rain not already know about muhammad ali and then he's like well. We found photographs and we found video of him that even his family's like where'd you get that awesomely. I can't wait to see it and it starts on sunday on pbs. Ken burns is good. What he does he is. And it's a it's a team effort with him and his family Let's take a break phone calls. "Todd boyd said you know the language of a white racist about his opponent and he said this is the ultimate conscious black guy using the language of white. He's and he says something. That was a key for me and understanding. Ali says i just think in this instance. He used his powers for evil. Instead of good. And i go. Oh that's right. We're making a film about a superhero. That's what this is. This is a superhero. In every sense of the word. The marvel stuff is just you know. As far as i'm is somebody who lived a larger than life life that we can all participate in and take what we can from. It's not that you know. The world had opinions of him. The world changed its pigeons of him as he grew and more importantly we grew and i think one of the great gifts of mohammed ali is. He asked us to be different than we were the Filmmaker director and writer of coder and co director of mohammed ali which is going to be on. Pbs four part series. Sunday september nineteenth at eight eastern time. Ken burns here on the rich eisen show and the few minutes i have left with you. I would be remiss if i did not speak to one of the greatest chroniclers in documentaries of baseball From that spectacular baseball Film that you put together Back in the nineties All the way through. So what do you make of otani. Somebody lose what. I love to get your perspective on what shohei otani is putting out on the field right now. It's just so exciting. Because you've got a the obvious the shades of babe ruth and you've got kind of revitalize of the game everybody's always willing to write baseball's obituary. I heard i had a quote in the film. The first episode of the baseball series in which in eighteen fifty eight. They were writing the obituary of baseball. You know some guy named pete. O'brien saying oh you know. They don't play baseball the way they used to. When i was a kid. I mean the rules are different. But the spirits goner. This has gone. You know and we've been writing for so long and it's always this ever changing sense surprises. Shohei ohtani just gives you the opportunity to go. This is why this is the best game ever invented. you know. it's not just that the defense has the ball. It's not just that there's no clock. It's not just that the human beings scores but then we have so many different personalities in so many different skills sets as the greatest basketball player one of the greatest basketball players of all time discovered when he tried momentarily switch and could not hit a buck eighty five in the national time. This is a really tough thing to do to take a bit of turned northern ayrshire now maple and hit a horse high or whatever it is now coming at you at a hundred miles an hour in deciding in a millisecond to hit it and the people who fail seven times out of ten are going to the hall of fame. Do that for fifteen is great seinfeld once told me the greatest thing he thinks about baseball is that it's the only sport Where I it's the the equality of the democracy of talent and physique that essentially somebody the size of aaron judge and the size of jose altuve. Ar both mvp candidates in the sport. And that's not true football or hockey or basketball right. I mean you do have your spud webb every once in a while but look at mattocks you know greg maddux. Looks like an accountant Dan okra ourselves. You know like what he should be coming off the mound with a briefcase and he's one of the greatest pitchers of the last. You know couple of generations now. I know you have to go. But i do want to shoehorn one last in here for your muhammad ali film. Gimme the good stuff on cosell. You got some good stuff on. Cosell look dell got as david mix film. He got cash. Clay i mean he's he too long he bugged him by not changing the name but at the beginning he's pretty critical of him for the braggadocio.

Show how are you sir. I'm doing very well. how are you doing. i'm doing well. What What attracted you to the subject matter. Can well this co-directed with my oldest daughter. Sarah burns and her husband. David mcmahon we did central part five them and jackie robinson together so in some ways. This is the kind of obvious choice but a dear friend of ours. biographer of the most. Recent biographer jonathan. I just said is. We're working on. Jackie seven or eight years ago. This is a great story and we of course went. Oh my god. How did we ever spend forty years doing this. Not bought it before. So we've just dove in wholeheartedly and i think you know i grew up with him. I remember my dad telling me that he won gold and in the sixty olympics when i was seven years old the The the story is just beyond anything of our wildest understanding and look. I should say there are lot of documen justice mohammed ali and there are lots of good ones really really good films and we're not attempting to replace them or change them. We just noticed that they were about a specific fight. Or a series of fights. Or about a couple of your. We really wanted to do soup to nuts from birth and boyhood and jim crow segregated louisville kentucky to dance by parkinson's not five years ago in twenty sixteen. So how how does one approach conic figure. That has been talked about and documented His story in so many ways. You just pointed out how. How do you approach attack such an endeavor. Ken burns you. You know. I remember shelby foote said to me. When i was working on the civil war he said god is the greatest dramatist. It's a way of saying and then and then and then so we just literally start at the beginning. Obviously we're gonna do deep research. We're gonna read. We're going to try to find and we did find database fifteen thousand photographs. Four five hundred hours of footage of him and particularly interviews with him that some of which have never been seen the light of day since they were originally taken Home movies and stuff. The definitely is from folks. Garages that has never been seen before. The families called me up and say wow. I never saw that picture of him holding me. And saying you don't you know your daddy's the baddest in the world so feel like we get a good deep dive and it's just working with scholars and people to make sure that we can not just animate the boxing story which is like the collected. Works of william shakespeare but also this journey in faith Just becoming a member of the of islam is not enough just to mention it or describe what it was. It's an ongoing fluid process of a young man finding something that gave some meaning to his life at that point and then maturing with it over the course of his life where he he sort of shed that in order to embrace you know the more orthodox than more mainstream islam which the sect the nation of islam was and it's also about the personal life. Four wives you know that means three divorces Lots of kids that means children of divorces Money all of that sort of stuff. It was attempted have a comprehensive integrated view of the whole of mohammed ali. And if you think about it. He touches every single single issue of the last half of the twentieth century. The role of sports in the united states the role of a black athlete the definitions of black masculinity about the dimensions of the civil rights movement about faith about religion about islam about politics about war. I mean all of that he touches in. All of those teams are still relevant. So in the end of the day you have a film. I think that is about. Freedom is very difficult for a black man. This continent to escape the specific gravity of that circumstance. It's about courage a young man in his twenties and said he's willing to stand up to a machine gun fire rather than go against his say we took it as a political statement but it was a fair statement to not fight in vietnam and then of course a very difficult topic one that the fcc four letter words that the fcc allows you to us but we don't have a very good track record of actually talking about it in depth. Which is this is a story about love. He dies the most beloved person on the planet after being in the nineteen sixties and early seventies seemingly one of the most people because i say seemingly only because i think it's a lot of what was projected into him rather than what he himself did ten burns here on the rich eisen show. Muhammad ali is coming your way to your pbs station. Starting september nineteenth this sunday at eight eastern. A four part series. What did you learn about him. Everything i mean. I thought i knew my whole life accompanied is and and i watched him. I met him. You know i. I just think there's all of these dimensions. Their scrape humor. There's great pathos is great. You know tension. I just you could take the first list and fight and you could. Almost you know no hollywood producer. Would you buy it or the thrilla in manila which in which he said he was close to death or when he wins the championship from foreman when most people in this corner are worried that he's going to be killed he actually destroys mormon There's there's all of that and then there's the the the intimate moments where we sort of say well in that early period. All he did was bragging make jokes and recite poetry. And you know. I'm i'm so bad i can drown a drink of water and tila tree when in fact there's several things that we discovered that were so thoughtful and why that belied his age belied the the job that he was doing the career that he'd chosen. And we're speaking sort of big heavy things you know and i am just stunned at the intimacy of of who this guy. He knew early on. He put on boxing gloves and within a few months. He's saying i'm going to be the greatest and everybody's going like yeah. You don't anything. And he was the greatest or he'd say stuff like well. The ally honorable allies. Muhammed doesn't want me to box. So i don't need to box and the guy says you give. Boxing is yeah. I don't need to box. But i know i'm here for a purpose and you could see that early on as a young kid. He knew he was put on this earth for something else. The thing that really struck me when he passed away ken burns was the number of people and i'm not just talking about famous. People peers or people covered him the number of just regular citizens around the globe that posted photographs that they had with him that that he stopped and took photographs and talk to people and everyone had a story honestly like it was wild to me how much he got around. You know it's crazy cat. You know the people's choose wanted to give. I mean when he says i'm pretty a girl. I'm bummed beautiful. I'm black i'm beautiful. We think it was a part of unexpected braggadocio. That up until that point athletes weren't supposed to behave and certainly black athletes wants to be that way but what he was doing was he was giving permission to people. Black people around the united states but oppress people everywhere. The the the permission to feel good about themselves and so he is on so many cotton's continents africa north africa middle east asia south america as well as here at home a beloved figure in europe as well a beloved figure and As david remnant the editor than yorker in a biographer of early clay lies eating just said that you know. By the time he dies. He's revered almost like a religious figure like the buddha. Everybody has that story because he took the time. It wasn't like okay. We're done with the autograph session. How much did i make. Let's go. It was no pay just here here i am. I will give you until you're satisfied. I met him once. It was the same way you just the generosity of spirit. It didn't matter you know it was so pure and i'm still impressed with what he is and having said that rich you know. This film doesn't pull any punches about his failings you know. They're all over and in every single episode and he becomes aware of them and tries his best at the end of his life to tony fields. There's a tallying angel. And that the way he's treated women his unfaithfulness to his wives the way he cut off malcolm x. so abruptly when ordered to by elijah muhammad just before malcolm x. was murdered by the nation of islam And also the way he had treated joe frazier by using as the scholar..

"Leyla here on the rich eisen show wealth. Was that memorial. Like i think they're trying to make me cry on your show. I'm trying to do that. I'm just messing with the i. I was crying. I know i was for days. Frankly we had a full week on this. Show one guest after another from your dad's life whoever's come across some talk about it. What what was that day like. It was amazing you know. And it was Surreal i mean. There was so much going on. I saw people coming in from different. Countries didn't even have a seat in the arena. Just to stand outside of it and it just was like well. You know how many people have been touched by my father. I mean there's so much. There's nothing i can say. That hasn't already been said but even for me that was just like a. Wow factor might my my children for the first time really came to understand a cow famous. Their grandfather actually was it was. Yeah because i remember the moment you know like i shouldn't say i remember the moment but i remember that i know he's famous but then when you really find out like wow all of these people came here for him so but i mean there was just so much going on but you know we have had to grieve you know after all that kinda settled down as a family but you know we feel like the whole world was grieving with us. Oh and my dad will be missed of course. Do you remember that time for you when you first realized. Oh my gosh. My my dad is world well when i was old enough to start watching documentaries when he could talk and just seeing what he what he fought for and what he stood stood up for and just understand understanding what he put on the line on the sacrifices that he may. That's when i really started to respect him more. Well look. I mean you're you're i'm not trying to make you cry. I'm really not. I mean but what your dad meant to millions and billions with a b. You can't really say that about anybody anymore. Know i mean you say that about your dad you could say it about mandela. You could say that about mandela. Could say that about pope right. That's basically who you could say that about in this day and age and it's amazing because he just was a person who tried to help everybody did what he knew was right and stood up for what he believed in at the end of the day. You know that's what really made the difference. Yeah he was a great fighter but his who he was. outside of. The ring is why people love him so much right and and it's so difficult to do that though. It's easy to say about who you are and what you believe in standing up for it all the time but you find. It's very difficult to do that. In daily life for certainly athletes to do in this day. I see people do it. I try to surround myself with people who do it on a smaller level. Of course but just in your day to day life you know just taking a day by day and just having integrity and doing what's right. I mean there's not going to be a lot. Of mohammed ali supposed to be and he was specially chosen to be.

You're in play. I keep mentioning. We're looking for somebody who's not expecting. We're looking for somebody who does a job. That doesn't usually get much recognition right. Now there's somebody that if you do those two things plus this one push at the top of the list right. Oh can i guess. Rich beato house they ask. Let's check the schedule or or come up with a soundbite like this look when we started this concept of toughest player on planet earth. We're like again. We don't want to go to most famous programs even though we have gone to georgian oregon. I but we've gone again a position group that you might not expect to have a name image and likeness deal now. Defensive back or safety might suffice on that front. Even if you're in alabama where. I think every single players getting some sort of an just waking up some. You know folger's just for waking right maxwell house something okay though. But but there's only one where the best part of waking up right fair and balanced but jordan battle sir. We have got. You circled our eyes on you. This happened at the alabama crimson tide media availability on tuesday. A couple of other guys about this but do you have a favorite saying that saving. His little coaching quips. He has not think of now because he has so many but there there are few like he always talking about touch or or or you know a suck suck or charlie fall down. We get ready. Replay sat because as always when something so great watching it a second and third time. It's even better than you pick up on stuff now. Listen you know. We've talked about it here. Our favorite part of the famed dennis green ran the bears are who we thought they were is after the rant and he has cursed and he's hit the podium and two podiums askew and his hats all askew and he's done with his rent. It's a long pause and you hear. Mark dalton the one of the best in the business in the media and the nfl or anywhere say pause. Thanks coach matt. Liner will be next. Okay and again we still have on and on the show you gotta have on just because i need to ask him what it was like to go in the room after that. But so listen somebody. I think on the alabama staff screams. No as he's here. That coach sabin heard likes making these nuts job occurred. What are the all time greats in any sport likes these nuts joked sony screams now and then i think a member of the staff says charlie setting up the reporter who then says sure like okay. Do you ever have a couple of the other guys about this. But there's a i mean everybody was pulling it seemed like just slapping people around it in ohio state. This past weekend was crazy so we got. We got a saying that We we say five one right before we kind of rock before every single drive we give give each other's now goes all at the same time we say one and we just go out there and we were all so we. That's how we do things. So that's that's that's how we roll. Just be careful now though because with the gorilla glue your knuckles might actually stick together. So be careful. Four four two four rich number dollars if you're on hold stay on but Let's give some money to a kid in college football to do that. One went up Thanks to our friends. Our partners richeisenshow partners at gorilla glue each week. We give out an award called the toughest player on planet earth and we hoped out with gorilla. Glue saying we want to give in this. New world of name image and likeness. We want to give a deal to a kid in college football. That's not expecting doesn't see it coming doesn't potentially already have won. We might choose a quarterback but maybe from a smaller school where name image and likeness dollars aren't porn and we want to give the an i l. Deal to a kid. That's either a not expecting it or be does all of the tough work in an nfl or pardon me in a college football game. I slipped right. There got my sunday hat on so we identified last week. Jordan davis defensive lineman of georgia after terrific game against clemson. We call them up. We told them you got the toughest player on planet earth award with gorilla glue. And what you get for that you get a thousand dollar check from gorilla glue and free product cash money. Yeah cash money and then glue some tape to a lot of good stuff. Needs fixing right last up recall jordan davis. It was his first. Nfl delia net one. So that's that's the idea so who to give it to this week. Well when you are part of an offensive line. That strolls into hostile territory like say the horseshoe in columbus ohio against the ohio state university and you are part of an offensive line that racks up two hundred and sixty nine yards on the ground which is the most by an opponent of the buckeyes in columbus since two thousand fourteen. You hand the buckeyes. They're first regular season loss since two thousand and eighteen and you are sitting there as the center of the oregon ducks and you grow grade like that. Like alex forsyth. Did you are a rich eisen. Show gorilla glue toughest blair odd quieter big. Hugs again not a sack pressure or a hurry in hundred forty-five snaps to start the season for the now fourth-ranked oregon ducks. Whoa and yeah. You're the pac twelve offensive lineman week. Okay was that kitchen glue. No thousand bucks. No attack pat on the back. Of course i get. It doesn't get you'd worldwide prestige now. Jordan davis did this last week. It's not part of the deal. I want this to be understood. The kid who we choose is not required to call into the show definitely not but each time now to times the kids like you want to call on the show course meet. Let's meet so is our winter on a phone line. Chris yes he is and the man of the hour. The rich eisen show gorilla glue toughest player on planet earth for week number. Two that we've been doing this in the college. Football season is joining us. Right now on the rich eisen show Phone line oregon ducks. Santer alex forsyth. How are you alex. Thank you very much. have me on them. you know. i'm i'm definitely honored to you. Get this week Gorilla glue tough player. Toughest player on planet earth award. You bet man. We're psyched to give it to you for many reasons First order of business is just you guys you and your teammates road grading for two hundred sixty nine yards in the horseshoe. What what were. What were you planning on doing that week. Like how are you able to execute. Like you guys did in a horseshoe not i think go going into the week we You know we. We got a game plan. That was really run heavy We kind of opened up the coast. Moorhead really really kinda dug down and gave us a really really good game plan. And you know the guys around me. Ryan lock and tj bass the the the guards next me You know steven steven jones george. More sala dawson. You know all the all the guys that played that game on the on the line really know we buckle down during the week and it felt it felt different or during practice and during meetings you know the guys were really really locked in what we're doing and they're always like in every week but especially this week it. Just you know just felt different and you know the physicality. During during tuesday and wednesday is practice was was really unmatched in. And i haven't seen it You know that physical since. I've been here so we really stepped it up a notch and all these guys you know. C. j. c. j. dell had had a heck of a game travis died a heck of a game You know we really got the run game going. We knew as nothing to line it was. It was going to be on us. If we were gonna end up getting Getting a w there and so you and the rest of the team got that big huge win at ohio state. What was it like in the locker room after the game. I can't even explain it. It was it was unbelievable Feeling that remember forever. And i'll be able to tell my kids about one day it was. It was unbelievable Going into awesome environment against you know really well respected and a really great opponent in ohio state And going in. And i know not a lot of people around the country thought we were gonna come out with a win. So it it You know even that much sweeter to get. Get the win and you know. Just celebrate with our teammates You guys get hurt during the week and guys get her during the game and you know the guy the guys who were behind him really just stepped up and and just you know. Play their butts off and and just showed a lot a lot of mental and physical toughness and resiliency. I'm really proud of all my and one of the many reasons why we also Knocked on your door. "Whatever you wanna call it so. I'm actually going to throw in one little honorable mention. Just because i think more people need to hear this one and it's not one that we've ever really talked about very much and it's one that when i found a couple of years ago i told you guys to listen to it and i don't think either of you ever have and it's it is called the shepherd and it was done by bbc. Radio and it is in a dramatization of a short story by british author. Frederick forsyth now. I read this story many many years ago and i absolutely loved the story. It's a short story That he wrote. And if i remember the story correctly he said forsyth said that i believe his wife challenged him to write a christmas related. Ghost story or something like that now. Don't get scared off by the ghost story kind of thing it's not like super crazy weird But this is fantastic story set in in the uk. And after i read it. I fell in love with the story. I've i've read it several times. And i always thought when we when we started. Atc is in the back of my mind. You know this would make a great audio drama. And i happen to just search one time like. I wonder if anybody's ever done this and sure enough. Bbc had and i finally found a copy and it is an just an interesting story. Now just a little heads up. There are a couple of Mild language issues with it but other than that it is christmas related. It takes place on either christmas eve or christmas day. Can't remember which but it's involving some royal air force pilots and it's again called the shepherd if you can find it. I think you will enjoy this story. So that's my little honorable mention but had to squeeze that one in. Because i want more people to hear this story because i think it's so good. Yeah all right any final thoughts on on our lists. I don't think so other than There're probably some of these. That i could have switched out with stuff to my other list. Yeah yeah i know same here. thank you. Christopher for that suggestion. 'cause i really enjoyed doing this. Yeah it was really cool for me to kind of revisit. Some of these are having actually listened to in in a while. Yeah and if you're new to audio drama here's here's a list of fifteen to guess started. Exactly no kidding. And they're like scattered through all. Yeah covers everything absolutely everything. The sport lifers port everything into it the passion we had a chance to interact with them professionally and socially over the years. I got a lot of time respect for they all say above answer teens coming in as the acting coach and was on the bench with mark and filled the santos for the first two years An extremely unique individual a thirst for knowledge and as good a people person as i've been around and he'll talk your ear off in. He'll talk your ear off like five or six languages. He has gone out and educated himself to a degree that very few people have. He's got a wonderful wonderful manner with people incredible communication and interpersonal skills. And he's going to need them here. So i can understand why you would want to turn the bench over to somebody like that. That said does not have a whole lot of experience with the big whistle in competitive situation. So that surprised me a little bit that you would go from an assistant on the bench with marked santos to coaching The twenty three d you twenty three side to now being repatriated to the big club. I this is temporary Obviously how temporary though is that's that's we don't know i mean it could be very temporary will see again. You just have to look at the talent. What did mark this antos feel comfortable plane. Look at the first half of this season. He used the same starting eleven. That's right like almost. He used the same thirteen players every game and the substitution made were late because he didn't trust anybody outside of those twelve thirteen players. That tells you everything you need to know. No i 'cause i asked you several times. Why are the substitute all of them. So late doesn't trust anybody. Now i've heard both greg kerr foot. Do you think mark knew that. That was it for him. If he might have. I was asked about it last night from person in the sport and i said no i think he gets a few more weeks to see.
