"As a consumer. You expect to see prices for the same items cost a little bit more or less depending on where you buy them but in healthcare costs can be a bit of a mystery. Under a trump administration rule that took effect in january. Most hospitals are required to start making their prices public and this new data is revealing some wide discrepancies in what patients pay even for the same procedure performed in the same facility. Let's bring in the journals on a matthew. She's part of a team whose been reporting this story. She joins me from southern california on good morning. Good morning so you've been looking at this data. What can you tell us about the price differences you found in the healthcare system. And why we're seeing them in the procedures. We looked at which was not all of them. But then the procedures we looked at which were inpatient procedures. We did see a variety of prices Displayed in that was pretty consistent. The exact order of who was getting. What rate did vary. But there were some general patterns which i think you will see across hospitals as more of this data comes out. Which is that plans. That are offered under medicare medicaid sort of go through under government programs tended to have the lowest rates and that is because those rates tend to be tied to the rates that the government sets for itself essentially those government mandated rates the rates for the commercial plans which the implant that cover employers and and individual consumers who buy their own coverage tended to be quite a bit higher than those government backed plans and then the highest we saw were again out of network rates. Meaning the rates that charged if you go to a hospital. That's not in your insurance network. Let's dove into the specifics. Can you give an example of a particular procedure and just how big the price spread was depending on who the insurance provider wise. We looked at a number of different procedures at different hospitals owned by sutter health which is in northern california system that did reveal very full data and one of them was a c. section at sutter helps california pacific medical center van ness patient san francisco the price being charged to insurance plans vary from six thousand two hundred forty one dollars to as high as sixty thousand five hundred eighty four dollars. The rate depended on what type of plan was paying largely. That autumn rate was for a local plan. That is really a medicaid plan so it was It was paying a rate that is set by the state of california medicaid. That upper number was the. What is what. Sutter would be charging for a person who's going to that hospital out of network meaning. They have insurance at. The hospital is not in their insurers network on would do the insurance providers say about this disclosure rule and the price ranges that are shown in the data providers. Hut fought very hard. Hospitals fought very hard for this ruled not to go into effect. They sued to block it in fact but they lost so it is moving forward. We did of course speak to sutter extensively about or we interacted with sutter. I should say much of it was by email About the prices that we found asking for explanations and they said that the range of prices we see is evidence of a robust competitive market in healthcare and insurance that they negotiate. And that's how it how it should be And that they do their best to come up with prices that make sense for patients. Generally though the industry objected and fought against having to reveal these prices at all. So what are the takeaways here. Both for consumers like you and me and for the overall healthcare sector. I think one of the takeaways here is something that i think. Most consumers don't know which is that for the same procedure in the same hospital. Depending on your insurance plan the price can vary really as much as fivefold. It can be a huge huge variety of prices. And i'm not sure people realized that what economists say is that does raise questions about the effect on healthcare costs overall in the united states. And whether some of whether those costs are being driven higher by prices. That really don't have necessarily much relationship to the actual cost of the service involved. Tell me more about that. How do these price variation show up for consumers. So the prices that are being revealed here can affect your out of pocket in that it your deductible or if you have co-insurance betweens you pay a share of the cost of a procedure if that procedure is costing your insurer more your portion is also going to go up but a major impact of these prices. Is they affect premiums. Because premiums really are tied to the expected cost of the of the procedures that the insurance will cover so as prices for healthcare. Go up premiums for health insurance. Go up as well automatically us appreciate the conversation. Thanks for being here. Thank you and finally. It will be valentine's day this sunday but in the age of the pandemic romance is getting reinvented. Many of the nation's restaurants and movie theaters remain closed while some people can still go out for dinner depending on where they live for many couples. It will mean staying close to home. "Idea of AH center as conviction of former President Trump in an impeachment. Rog rose unlikely, Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia is raising the possibility of a censure to condemn Trump for his role in the deadly January 6th attack on the U. S. Capitol, Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia seems open to the idea. We'll look to make sure that no one ever does this again, never thinks about doing something of seditious insurrection. Such is that a conviction of Trump in the impeachment trial would require two thirds of the Senate, meaning all Democrats. 17 Republicans. But on the procedural motion Tuesday, 45 Republicans voted to declare the impeachment trial unconstitutional might cross yet Washington Republican John Cornyn of Texas is among the U. "Me Now he saw the same New York Times article I saw which ranks the states in terms of how the vaccine rollout is going right now. Not good news for Illinois. Not at all. We're 44th. And this kind of goes state by state ranking us all based on how successful it's happening. How many how the number of people getting the shot relative to the supply and less than half of the vaccines that have been received by the state of Illinois have made it into people's arms. And that doesn't seem good enough. Doesn't leader McConkey Thanks for being on the show. You have got to be on with you today and So what do you mean? What do you make a person? I'm gonna ask you the y, but I mean, just generally speaking. When you saw this, you may have the same reaction. I had that That's not good. And now when we hear so many people trying to get it, this unused supply is out there. Uh, that isn't effectively getting into the hands of people need. It's not. It's not a good situation. No, not at all. And you know, this is something that I mean, so many people have been clamoring obviously for the vaccine, and, you know, I was just grateful that the New York Times that did you know an investigative piece? Just do compare. How is it that we're doing against other states and not only are reporting fourth overall, you were behind all of the other big states. I mean, Florida's like ninth and You know, New York is 13th. It stars how money back seems they've received that they're getting in the arms of the people that need it. And you know, even more concerning, you know, we've dug into Each data. You know, we're about half of the covert deaths have been associated with those people in long term care facilities and like 20% of those people have actually gotten the vaccine and they're like top ranked people. They were supposed to be getting the vaccine. First and yet, you know, we haven't even gotten in what 20% or so of those employees in and patients. I mean, this This is this is a real problem, and the governor, in my opinion just has not been transparent and regards to How they're rolling us out what the problems are mean. Look, we're all in this together, aren't we? Yeah, I agree. And one of those statements he came out from the governor's office today and I'll read his response to you in a second, But I see if you can understand it. It was really hard to understand. Here is what the governor's office is saying that Walgreens and CVS didn't do a good job but getting them out to the nursing homes that they're still only administering 110,000 doses of the half a million they received for nursing homes and group settings. They kind of pointed a finger in that direction. What do you make of that? Well, The interesting thing is this is not only an issue in Illinois, CVS and Walgreens is his problems in other states, those states have actually already acted to move. In those entities to go another route. I mean, at the end of the day, the state is the one that's responsible for making sure the administration here inside the state walks in the way in which it needs to happen. And other states When they've seen problems they've already adjusted, moved. Illinois has not Okay, so they got reporter, I guess specifically asked about you and your tweet on this. Or maybe you put out a message as well, Um, about you, pointing out that less than half of the vaccinations have gotten into people's arms have gotten into the hands of people who need him. On D was asked, and I know if you saw the statement, But he said his reply. Woz stay with me if you can. I think Senator McConkey isn't paying attention to the numbers. The real numbers are that we have separated out the number of doses that are necessary for all of our long term care facilities, and that is taking time to roll out that's being done by a federal partnership. If you take all those doses out and remove the number of second doses that have been delivered to the state of Illinois for people who when they are needed will get them and therefore those air in storage as well because their second doses were not even allowed to dip into those second doses to give out the first it goes on. I'm not sure I understand this, Which is that? That's a problem. I mean, that's that was the response. What? Yeah, and I don't know what ability Well in here. Here's the thing. I mean, the governor for so long has just pointed to you know, former President Trump is As being the source of kind of all That's been wrong with covert response yet the interesting thing is that obviously the president is there any more. But beyond that other states have figured this out of me. We have some states that are 60 plus percent, you know, doses in arms were at 48% or so I mean, other states have figured this out, and you know he wants to point to federal rules and so forth the tie his hands, But these other states have been able to either set those aside or deal with them as appropriate. It's not like the federal govern. I came up with just one set of rules and only apply that to Illinois that didn't apply to others. I mean, you know today, the governor. Where's the collar for this? Yeah, And I just I just wonder how you get things to improve from here because it because it needs to and you know, you hear people hear people call into our show Listeners who text me and tell me they're just trying to get this for their elderly parents. They're trying to get it for themselves. And they're willing to wait in line. Nobody wants to jump ahead of anybody, but just to sort of, you know, get it done in an efficient way. I don't think that's too much to ask. I really don't know. You know exactly. And this has been the problem with the governor's leadership in regards to covert response from back in March, he has decided to go it alone. He has never brought The legislature to the table. I mean, look, we have 177 members of the Legislature, all of whom have communities that we represent. We understand how our neighborhoods and our our people from our areas are constituents what they think what they need how to how to do this. He could have gotten greater by and by having more decision makers kind of around the table, helping him. He's decided not to do that, in contrast to most other states. Don't have worked in partnership with their legislature. Some have done so willingly other have done you had to do so. As a requirement of law. The governor has not been required by law to do this here. He's refused to do it on his own. And that's why he's bears full responsibility for any sort of steaks or problems that get rolled out as part of this response. Yeah, well, I hope it improves for all of us. I really do and it's it's next rooting for that's rooting for us team us. I mean, really on by hope it happens, but thank you, Leader of McConkey Appreciate the time today.
