"NPR and WBUR I'm Tanya Mosley along with Celeste headley This is here and now Guilty on both counts That is what a jury found today in the manslaughter trial of Kim Potter Potter is the white former Brooklyn center Minnesota police officer who must mistook her taser for a gun during a traffic stop back in April killing 20 year old Dante Wright who is black Here's judge Regina Chu reading out the first verdict On the charge of manslaughter in the first degree while committing a misdemeanor on or about April 1120 21 it had a mentality state of Minnesota find the defendant guilty The shooting death happened while another former police officer in Minnesota Derek Chauvin was on trial for killing George Floyd Rick Petrie is a former criminal defense attorney who is now a professor at Mitchell Hamlin's law school in Minneapolis and Rick the jury deliberated for more than 25 hours earlier this week They asked the judge how long they should deliberate if they could not reach a consensus Are you surprised by today's outcome Frankly a little bit surprised There's a compelling testimony in terms of the emotion of miss Potter when she testified and sometimes even though it's really not supposed to carry the day Sometimes that emotion can swing a jury but I think if you look at it legally and you look at the facts and they arrived at just verdicts Her lawyer said that this was an accident also that she thought her fellow officers were in danger Do you think the jury reached the right conclusion Yeah you know they raised that argument I was frankly I was a little surprised in their opening statements when they took such a hard position with regard to her fellow officers being in that much danger obviously at that point in time they had seen a lot more of the evidence that I had but as the trial unfolded it seemed like that argument was a bit shaky They really had to lead witnesses in order to get that testimony in And then I think if you couple that with her statements immediately after they just didn't seem to fit together So I think it was a clever argument to make but I don't know that it was supported by the evidence You know during the trial jurors wanted to see her hold her gun and her taser what did that tell you Well I think it suggests that they wanted to actually experience what the difference would be in holding the firearm compared to what they would experience in holding the taser It sounds like they reached a verdict on the lower charge the manslaughter two charge a couple of days ago on Tuesday but then they were still going back and forth on the manslaughter one charge until they reached the verdict today So I think that they just wanted to experience it for themselves to see what the difference in weight and feel of each of those weapons was like What are your big picture takeaways from today You know it really seems to mark a shift in public sentiment in terms of holding police officers accountable when black men are killed That is not what we have seen historically Frankly police officers were rarely even charged let alone convicted but it seems that there's a big shift now in the public just saying hey enough is enough my other hopeful take away from this is that police agencies across the country will go back and rethink the way that policing is done and also rethink that the way that police officers are trained in the support that they get They have a very difficult job There's no doubt about that And oftentimes just being honest I'm not sure that they get the support that they need in order to carry out that difficult job Rick Petrie is a former criminal defense attorney who is now a professor at mitchel Hamlin law school in Minneapolis and we will receive the sentence for Potter in January Thank you Thank you As COVID-19 cases surge around the country driven by the oma cron variant we do have some good news Tuna drugs have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration both shown to reduce serious illness hospitalization and death among high risk patients So what's the difference between these pills and what are the treatments are available as we head into the gasp 30 year of the pandemic Let's bring in doctor Angela Rasmussen She's a virologist at the vaccine and infectious disease organization at the university of Saskatchewan Doctor Rasmussen welcome back Thanks for having me Celeste It's good to have you with us because I'm sure like many people I have a lot of questions Yesterday's authorization for the Pfizer pill called pax levied shows it will be available to infected adults and kids 12 and older who have medical conditions how significant is the approval of this drug Well I think this really couldn't come a moment too soon Now that we have the omicron variant spreading widely throughout the U.S. that means that a lot of people including people who are vaccinated may potentially be coming down with severe COVID-19 So with absolutely crucial that we have other options for treating those patients should they end up becoming severely ill due to the result of a Macron If people can get the pill of course we've read that the government has initially ordered enough pills for about 10 million people and by one calculation that would be enough to last a single day if half the people who've tested positive got it Do you have high hopes for delivery to the patients that need it So that really is the downside to this Unfortunately I don't know that we will have the supplies to be able to provide this pill as widely as would be desirable to all the people who are potentially at risk Right now we're looking at extremely steep case trajectories meaning that we are seeing a lot of increasing cases in a very short period of time And both of the drugs from Pfizer and Merck seem to work best when they're given very early after you identify that you have been infected They have to be given within the first 5 days after diagnosis or symptom onset Otherwise they really don't work very well So it's going to be really really critical to find the patients that are the most at risk to make sure that they can get the limited supplies of these drugs It also is going to be really really important to make sure that people have access to testing so that they can be diagnosed as soon as possible But it is a real problem that supplies will unfortunately lag on into the new year and potentially we won't be able to provide this drug to all the people that need it until after the omicron wave has passed Yeah that's the problem That's a lot of ifs there Do they get a test Do they get.

"I like that All right so all right Jeff I'm still lost in the duck I like to try to divert yourself All right just you've got your MBA from the University of Chicago which means like a lot of Chicago alum you're probably a number What is the inflation numbers that you're looking at Did they tell you that this is really a cause for concern or the fact that a loaf of bread is doubled in price It's not that big of an issue longer term So I think inflation it has that variable listeners should understand that that variable has the potential to ruin the party High inflation not only attacks bond markets because of bond mass rates go up on prices come down but it also has the potential not to really hurt earnings because earnings are nominal but it has the potential to really disrupt multiples So it is something that has our full attention The committee that I chair which looks at these types of things my chief economist is on that committee for BNY Mellon We spend over an hour of a two hour meeting talking about inflation rates So that is how important that variable is We continue to monitor it closely I think a lot of it will prove to be and I use this term with purpose more temporary I think the supply chain issues will continue to abate as we move forward and get the sort of people back to work and those types of things that happen around the globe But other types of other things within inflation may be more sticky wages for example Have increased significantly But I think even those as you look out a year or two years from now we will not be increasing wages at the same rate that we are today as we're trying to attract and retain people sort of back to work Jeff is going to be temporary the new transitory is that we're trying to sort of like I said I use temporary as 6 months 9 months I think we may even have supply chain crescendo right here that the worst may be sort of happening now or maybe even slightly behind us If you look at anything from ships off California or you look at some of the rates for cargo containers you see those starting to abate just a bit So perhaps the second and third derivative is already improving And I think that might be a good sign Even semiconductor shortages will have to play that out And if those things abate and you get more car supply you also have lower prices on cars on used cars And that thing sort of abates I think over time But I think we've got to watch wages and we get to watch velocity of money We've got to watch whether money is being lent or spent and into the system and multiplying And again not to get you wonky but that could also push inflation higher so far velocity money from remain very well behaved So I'm still in that camp where high inflation certainly in the near term but dissipating And if that plays out again I think markets get more comfortable with inflation over the next 6 to 9 months That seems to be this consensus getting baked into the yield curve certainly Question is whether it will be more pervasive before we let you go Jeff There's so much uncertainty right now in the outlooks for 2022 a 20% spread for the S&P forecasts the most or the second most in the past decade is possibly the secret to success next year the correct hedge for inflation Understanding which instruments are most effective in this kind of environment I think that might help a bit but to me I always look at hedging hedging inflation it comes at a cost Many people think well boy inflation might be higher So I'm going to move into commodities or real assets right Those types of things in order to hedge my sort of equity or risk exposure And I do say those come with the cost Those types of investments historically have underperformed equities over time and therefore if you're purchasing that insurance or taking money out of equities to sort of place it in those types of investments you can have significant opportunity costs of inflation we're not to come or to be as high as one might expect If you had China's Chinese slowing if you had right there doing things now to continue to sort of prop up or can you improve their economy the cut in the reserve rate and those types of things But if you had to slow down in China you might have a slowdown in commodity purchases and all of a sudden your inflation hedge doesn't look so good anymore as demand for some of those economy some of those commodities waned So I think staying well diversified and maybe having some small hedging in the portfolio may be prudent but again equities have proven to be a good long-term hedge for inflation because they do so well when inflation is low Jeff mortimer thank you so much for being with us Happy holidays to you I'm going to say it early because that's where we're all pushing towards Jeff mortimer BNY Mellon and wealth management director of investment strategy with holiday greetings and an early look at why we all want to take more time off this winter We have our "Had federal troops. 25,000 we got people is in jail to this day. Who's more of a clear and present danger. No, That's not the point. The point is Keith Ellison is now the attorney general of Minnesota. And he was the predecessor, Dylan Omar. And he's every bit as radical Yesterday. Mr Ellison. Decided you up the charges against Kim Potter. She is the former Brooklyn Center Minnesota police officer who shot Dante right last April with her Glock while yelling Taser Taser! You saw the videotape because it was a cause celeb again coming on the heels of George Floyd in the same town. Just up the road in Brooklyn Center suburb of Minneapolis. Prior to yesterday. He had a second degree manslaughter charge, which carried a maximum of 10 years. The video clearly shows Miss Potter thinking she had a Taser and she shoots Dante, right. The video also shows that Mr Wright refused to comply with an officer's order. He had an outstanding warrant. For a weapons violation. When they found that out. They told him to get out of the car. He's being handcuffed. He then struggles with the officers got back into his car, and as the video of the incident clearly demonstrates. Instead of being tased. He was tragically shot. But it was an accident. That's not good enough for Keith Ellison. There isn't a cop in Minnesota. That isn't going to get the book thrown at them if Keith Ellison and Tim Walz and Tina Smith An embarrassment of the U. S. Senator. Has their way. You'll get a kick out of this. Governor Walz here in Minnesota, along with the representative Angie Craig. She was my successor in the second district. Now say they're opposed to the latest defunding the police plan in Minneapolis when they led the charge for the first round. This is the rehabilitation of Democrats in time for the midterms. Miss Craig and Mr Walls. Laurel and Hardy of Minnesota politics. We're all forward to funding the police and justice for George Floyd and all four letting the riders have a free pass Now that they know it doesn't poll. Well, they're saying No, we're not for this, Um Ballot initiative to define the police any further. This is how Democrats operate. They create the mayhem. They create the disaster. And then they do 1 80 media covers for them and they get re elected. So So now you've got Ellison. Upping the charges to a first degree manslaughter. Another 15 years on Kim Potter This article today in the Wall Street Journal left out a few things. About the suspect, Dante, right? In fact, your local station, your local newspaper did the same thing. I'll correct the record when we come back, nominated times clothing for the White House.

"The united states as middle class now. But yeah right now. They're they're a developing economy. They're not it's not a bunch of peasant farmers and factory workers anymore right these people own cell phones and they have cars and they have houses and they're much more used to authoritarian dictates. Yeah and americans are yeah they can hard to deal and that's the thing they can have best of worlds. They can have from the government's perspective chinese governments perspective they can have a consumerist nation that has educated people but they still get to maintain this authoritarian dictatorship over them. You know and think about how. Many chinese students come to america learn american education and then take it back to china. That's a mistake of You know the the republicans in us for a foreign policy and the immigration policy frankly You know the united states should be looking for anybody who's getting an engineering degree a science due to alter the stem degrees the united states. You know it's it's china. Had ten times as many graduates from stem graduates the united states last year and their economy. Their economy is aging rapidly. This only one way to handle this and that is take the best fruit they've got we can still get it and they won't do it this this really soft approach that america has had towards china had to do with this concept that we were like look. Let's just introduce our way of life to them. And then eventually china's gonna come around and realize the freedoms the answer first off we all agree that freedom spurs innovation. But when you're china and you don't want people to be free. All you have to do is go. Send your students to american universities steal the innovation and then you get to keep your tyranny and we've oh basically allowed them to reverse engineer all of our great ideas and allow them to catch up to us and now surpasses economically. Because we thought. Oh they'll come around and they'll stop being communist eventually and they never did right. Well i mean you'd have to be sufficiently the united states government with loves to flirt with the ideas of freedom but they don't know what freedom is now so they never been able to act. I mean this is the problem that you know chinese. Don't come here and learn. Freedom rights learn different boerse way to capitalism sorta germane to the topic and tying in the previous talk topic with the cultural things that are going on here. I don't know if you've ever heard of lily. tang okay. So libertarian party politician.
