"form factor" Discussed on Progressive Talk 1350 AM

"It was a digital camera in the form factor of sunglasses, and it was a product linked to Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga had joined Polaroid in 2010 as a creative director of specialty products. Of which these glasses were an example. And the glasses included not only a camera lens but also a pair of LCD screens inside the glasses so you can see the pictures you snapped. And there was an ear piece on the glasses that had a USB drive attached to it that served as the storage device for the glasses so you could store a certain number of images on them. They're supposed to come out during the holiday season in 2011, but they didn't. In fact, they never came out, though several online retailers had pages set aside for preorders. Eventually, Lady Gaga would leave Polaroid and no telling if it was because someone tried to poke her face pop pop pop poker face. Next. I'll talk about touring phones. All right, so Come and listen to the tail of the touring Robotics Industries, a company that intended to rise from the ashes of Nokia in Finland. And if you've listened to my Nokia episodes You know that the famous cellphone branch of the company moved over the Microsoft before effectively getting shut down during robotics industries set up shop in an old Nokia manufacturing facility and former Nokia employees were the founders of this company, and they had high ambitions. They plan to make luxury smartphones and their first such device was called the touring phone. Originally it was meant to be a secure communications device. And if you were to send and receive messages on a couple of these touring bones You would be certain that all communications were safe because they were using end to end encryption on the devices, which would theoretically make it impossible for a snoop to see what you were sending back and forth. If they if they intercepted anything, it would be meaningless gibberish. Now. Originally, the company wanted to use Android as their operating system of choice for the phone, but when they were eventually able to ship a working model several months after the originally planned ship date The operating system was sailfish, which was a little known Lennox based operating system for smartphones, and when they shipped these, it wasn't really the customers. They mostly sent them to reviewers. They only a few touring phones ever made it out to people who had pre ordered them. So they never were really widely available. They didn't and they certainly didn't get to everyone who had backed the company. But some of those early builds did get to reviewers who I have to say, did not have a lot of good things to say about the device. At least one of the reviewers ruined a review model because they dunked it into water. The actual touring phone was supposed to be able to withstand such treatment is supposed to be water resistant, but it turned out the review. Models that were sent out were not built on that specific hardware specification yet They were working with the selfish operating system and they had the the software on them. But they weren't the actual hardware handsets. And so the review model was ruined. The company kept talking about other phone models in the various design and production phases with frankly unbelievable specifications such as a 16 megapixel camera, which is insane or hydrogen fuel cell batteries, which People have talked about that. No one's really use those for cell phones. As far as I can tell these. These concepts have names like the touring Monolith Shack on and they're touring phone cadenza. None of them ever came to market. People who pre ordered the phone received an unfinished build of the Turing phone, which was really just meant to be a temporary solution, but it never became less temporary. The same was true for what would have been the second phone to actually make it out of the manufacturing facilities. That one was the passion Otto only a beta version of the hands that ever made it to reviewers and a few early customers who had pre ordered the phone. This one ran on android, not sailfish, and the security features.

"Sauce watching this thing late last night. It was a wild little introduction. Ford put on over there. I guess just outside detroit they had this huge projection and he didn't nighttime watching nine thirty my time and of course it was all about the electrification of ford. An all these dinosaurs coming online so to speak as far as electric vehicles are concerned because this is a big one here. I think this particular situation is bigger than they did with the machi. 'cause you know how it is with the f. one fifty. It's just a huge is a monster in the automotive gang and tesla you were talking before we started rolling feels kind of like a missed opportunity to get their truck out in the world and i know they had all they were. There was preoccupation. It's hard to make cars. And and they had their moment with the cyber trip day. Just didn't i gave them. I know a few hundred dollars once upon a time I didn't hear anything. Some people are starting to hear something. Actually talk a bit more about it in a moment cyber strikes a whole different thing though you and i were talking. How is every single trades. Person gonna wanna roll up to the job site in the cyber truck. Maybe not maybe there's a comfort level to traditional form factor but the point being is more round or my perception on the state of things as it is right now is more around ten avail- availability ability to deliver. Because we had a story from the other day about that. One enemy fighter dare you. She was saying. Where's my model x. Oppo find x3 pro review

"Embargo for the for the find x three pro lifted this morning this is okposo latest and greatest opo and oneplus share parent company. Bb case so there will be some overlap in what we talk about We don't know a lot about the oneplus series but what we know about the finance three pro. I think will dovetail nicely into the rumors for the oneplus nine. So let's start with you. Miriam you have this phone. It's oboe is not a brand name and north america yet. But i think it's becoming a bit more ubiquitous in europe where alex is you've reviewed one pl- or oboe phones for years now and you're you're among the first people to bring kind of these. Chinese brand opal vivo. Walkway into the purview of us audiences. So when you take a look at the x three pro. What's your first impression. Is this a phone that was made for a worldwide audience or is this more a phone that was made for a chinese audience. That is them being sort of adapted for the west. I think we're at the point now. Where i wanna odd xiaomi to your last i think yeah okay. I think we're the point. Where really these global launches of these phones the me levin from shami recently of course the oppo phoenix three pro and financial three series our global phones through and through. And i think that that's very exciting to me. Now we get the short end of the stick in north america. You're in canada. I'm in the us. Because we still don't get full five g support for our weird bands. And that means that i hesitate to recommend this phone to folks live on the north american continent of this time. I haven't tested the oppo yet on five g. here i'm hoping that as qualcomm becomes more omnipresent not that it isn't already but i mean in terms of its Band support for five g. sub. Six that we get eventually to a point where even buying global phone will just work on some bands in us. Kind of like four g. Lt. foams do and in canada. So i think these phones feel like truly global phones to me. I think that the biggest challenge the biggest obstacle that existed in the pass with these two years ago three years ago. If you imported one was the software. Felt very chinese in the sense that it was. It's like it's hard to explain. But there's a certain flavor to chinese phones if you've ever used one that doesn't have google services on it and that's changed radically. I think caller west which is what apple runs which is an on top of android is even closer now to oxygen. Which is what one plus has which makes sense. Bbq groups same company but in the past. That wasn't always the case. And i think xiaomi's done a very good job as well as an improving it appears to be more you know more universal to the global markets to customers in different countries. So i really have no qualms with this phone i think. It's it's a solid all-round flagship. It brings to the table some things we've never seen before and it on top of that. You know short of the five g support from north. America is a truly global phone so alex. You're the only person among the four of us that uses this phone. Where in the markets intended give us your overview of how fits into the uk european market. And what your first impressions are so whether fit into the market. Whether hoping to the mock i think is in the gap. The is currently in the process of being vacated by wa so there is a a room for another major player in europe and the uk. And i think that's that's where they plan to slow us into already seeing that taking advantage of always current challenges in china whether the now the the number one manufacturer but yeah i think in terms of just the quality the phone. It's it builds on what we saw in the next two pro in little ways last year But the my money this is a little bit of a one. Step forward one step back. Sort of a situation They're all the things. I really enjoyed about the findings to pro- And it it just seemed to have every angle sort of covered in terms of photography and a big part of that is super zoom telephoto in it. Yeah oddly something that a lot of brands of moving away from this year with the exception of while way sometime maybe xiaomi That's something i really miss. Unfor- photography scented phone that seems like a big emission. Especially when you have this weird microscope thing which is fun to play around with but is not going to have anywhere near the practical value In terms like dealer photography assume would get you So that's one sort of disappointments. That i have with it Made worse by the fact that. I'm not a massive found. The microscope The other side air you. i know this is. This is a one. A one point of conflicts on this phone denialism massive out of the microscope. But just before we get to that. The other thing is Find extra prolapsed yet no wireless charging is kind of becoming a table. Stakes feature ever since apple introduced is Now we finally have that but the battery life is just null. Great unstaffed That's the problem right When you getting in the region of twelve to thirteen hours In its its fooling over after about three and a half hours screen on you know especially for me coming from pixel five and show. I've been spoiled a little bit by that phone but Yeah it's haunted. Described the boundary line for this thing is anything but just a big disappointment for me. I would agree with that in the week or so that i've used it especially coming from the galaxy s twenty one pixel five. This is a big battery. that just doesn't perform like a big battery but were still a month out from launch and miriam. I know you haven't spent a ton of time with it but what's your impression of. I wanna come back to the camera. Because i think the the cameras a sort of a question mark for me. Every time i've spoken to one. Plus they give me different answers for why they made the decisions they did around the load out but the phone. Form factor right. They made a big deal about this single piece of glass on the back and how they machine did and you know burned it in killing at seven hundred degrees and puts a magic spell on it to keep its shape and all that. What's your impression of the form of this device. It's really interesting. And i think it's something that a lot of people it's pretty arresting to somebody who's looking at it from the back for the first time. Yeah i love the design. I think it's really unique. A middle worried that you know. It's like form over function in some way. Because i mean at this price point. What's the price anyway. Do we know eleven hundred pounds or twelve hundred years this price. That's fine but i like so gonna be a thousand like it's about the same as the next to last year pros last year. But he's a little bit cheaper but yeah that over thousand dollar price point. I'm okay with the crazy. You know wizards type approach to making the thing with thousands of hours of manufacturing time. Whatever it might be. I think it looks really cool. I've got the kind of grayish color. One agree dark rate lack. I don't know what color that is. But it's looking at a mirror. The whole thing is one piece. It's very cool. My my thing is that i'm really happy. They added wireless charging. That was the thing that i wanted to make a final to pro my daily driver austere and it up with of course oneplus eight pro which is count like again you know the oneplus nine pro is going to be a dead ringer of this phone. So no surprise there like in many ways so the reason i couldn't do it because what trudging was missing. Now that's been remedied by battery life. I haven't tested yet. So i don't know but it might be a result of trying to run everything at one twenty hertz and quad hd. I feel that. If i have to compromise somewhere it's resolution usually my eight pro oneplus a prior run at ten eighty p right and probably run the oneplus nine pro and switched to it at ten pm. Pretty convinced. i'm going to switch to it so wait you're of all the phones that you've used including the galaxy s twenty one. You're still using the eight pro. Is your daily driver. Oh yeah no. Don't i don't want to switch to off and i have so many ops to reinstall and set up a one once a year thing and i have to pick wisely right last year. I decided that i was going to wait. For the pixel five and so i hung hoed with the pixel forty or whatever four acceler my pocket for a while and then i realized that the pixel five was giving giving me what i want and the four or five g was actually the better form but didn't have wireless charging in my opinion so then i went said. I need to make a decision. So i went eight pro and the reason for that is i want i want wanna pixel essentially but i wanna flagship right. So what's the closest you can get to that. You can't get a flagship from google anymore. Anyway i digress but back to the quickey unfortunately have just to go as soon but i feel that for me. What surprised me. The most is the telephone okay. I couldn't get numbers on this. Is it three x two x two x optical and switch to x optical with five x figs. Zoom whatever hybrid. That's hybrid probably looks okay at five x hybrid but probably know better than one hundred eight megapixel. That's trying to do five x kinda like the eleven right. Yeah these over the past It's just fine. I is is fine of five but go beyond five. It's a bit yeah. We had a paris copa. Like five x right. That was different from the oneplus. Eight pro which only had like three x telephoto. So i think the teleph- the the lack of the telephoto disappearing from almost everyone's phones except for you know an iphone doesn't really count because there's only two axe to me. Anything that's to excellence doesn't count. It has to be three more. And ideally it needs to have two of them like the s twenty one ultra or the. We p forty pro plus. Which was my darling camera phone last year. Despite the lack of gm's so you see. That's the reason. Part of the reason daniel that i went with the pro because i knew that if i needed a better camera just pull out a weiwei. P forty plus and carry that with me right and so so then. I guess the party question that i would ask is what would it take for the financial three pro to be your daily driver over the nine. The oneplus nine pro. Because they are so similar to things. And i want that i feel. Actually this might take away from this. Phone is that oppo is holding back for an ultra version. Yes that was my conspiracy theories. Well i feel like we're like because everybody's doing more than a pro. Now i feel that apple is exploring that ultra premium end. And he's gonna come out with a special edition of this phone. That will have a proper periscope telephoto. But what would make me switch would be more see right now. Could live with a two x telephoto. If it's any good. I don't know off to try it but i think for me. It's five g support simply. Because i'm on t. mobile in the us and it's actually beneficial in terms of network coverage for me it's not really beneficial terms of speed by re does give me slightly better performance in some fringe situations and that would be my big. My big request bought the other thing. That i'm interested intrigued. Bob because i haven't really had chance to tessies. Cameras yet. Is their choice of using the two identical fifty megapixel. I am seven six six sensors on the ultrawide and the main to get perfect color. Matching 'cause how's that worked out for you guys so interesting thing. That is the you in theory. That is what happens. But then you have the ai thing that's turned on. Which can you run. I'm not sure by default but if you use it You know it's very useful things in some situations but if you use it then you can get radically different looking switching between the two lenses if you don't have the tent on yet is obviously much closer as a parting thought. I have a feeling that while last year's apple finds pro would have been my choice for that time period of the year that first half of the year until the no twenty ultra came out. Which was my darling phone of the fall. But i switched to it because i was lazy. And of course he has twenty ultra. now is a pretty solid choice for photography. I think until until then until the eight pro last year the findings to pro choice other than wireless charging and five jeep but this year. I'm much more convinced that all want the oneplus nine pro. That's your segue as i'm leaving because for me. The one plus nine pro. F- i don't know all of the details yet but that hassle partnership has me intrigued and more importantly i know it's going to support all the bands properly in the us. And it's going to have wireless charging which i need and it's going to be a slightly smaller phone. I think this year which. I'm very happy about because the eight cross a freaking monster of a beast. It's too big for me over there. So i think the x three profiles held back to me somehow. Apple is i can know what apple can do and be group and this is very good by this. This aversion to telephoto in chinese phones right now xiaomi's doing it too is driving me nuts. I don't get it i want all of it. I don't care about microscope. it's cool. I don't care about a macro because an ultra wide can do macro like it is on this phone. It is on one plus pro phones

Huawei unveils flagship foldable smartphone for China market

"Have another foldable phone. This one from wall way. Sarah tells all about it all right away. The made x. two which now holds the screen inside like the samsung galaxy. Fold rather than wrapping around the outside when you close it while we added a second six point. Four or five inch led ninety. Heard screen to the made to for you to use. It is folded. The inside foldable screen is eight inches. Twenty four by twenty display and the company says the mate x has less of an internal gap so it folds flatter than the galaxy full. So they're obviously making comparisons there. The screen folds into a waterdrop shape at the hinge when closed to prevent chrissy and and also breaking the made two launches but the android ten based. Em ui eleven. No google services but while we says it will be. One of the first device is upgraded to harmony os. That's always us in april. The made extra comes to china on february twenty fifth for seventy thousand nine hundred ninety nine one which is about two thousand seven hundred eighty five. Us dollars the announcement was conducted in mandarin nod. In english as is as it was in previous announcements and facts while we may run out of parts in q to even one if us trade restrictions do remain in place. Nick asia reported last week. That always told suppliers smartphone component orders would-be sixty percent lower than last year. Yes on the one hand we we see wah wah moving over to samsung's form factor On the other hand they are touting unimproved hinge that they say well. We've moved there because we've made it better but outside this is obviously targeted only domestically in china and We it's a question of even how many they could make to sell in china. Trevor have you been paying attention to this. Yeah i mean. I think if you're running out of chips the navy a good strategy would be to put out a phone. That's this expensive. You know you're not gonna sell now. Granted they they've probably been working on this for years but like that's going to help like how many people are going to spend twenty eight hundred dollars on a folding fund but it puts wall in a position where they're innovating on this new form factor. And personally. I think that the the full actually works really well. Because you don't have that sort of lopsided gap that you do in other foldables while way is playing out the clock here. They're they're hoping they can find a way out of this and they just wanna keep making models. They sold off on her but they do not want to sell off while way itself which would be the only other way out of this but if the. Us doesn't budge. Which doesn't look like it's going to. I'm not sure how long they can go. Obviously not longer than q two if things stay exactly the way they are now. Well the the foldable itself looks pretty nice guy. I didn't watch the entire announcement again in mandarin but the subtitles. I can follow along pretty well but it does look at least you know when someone standing on stage telling you about specs. It looks to be very nice When it's you know when it's when it's being used in tablet form You got a nice little eight inch screen when you've when it's when it's folded but you can still use it as a phone kind of block easy but i think for anyone who's like yeah but i have multiple devices and one that makes sense. It does seem pretty sturdy. One thing i did like about it was that they said that it was waited on one side and it reminded me a lot of the e-readers in adel put more weight on. What side because it's a more natural way to hold the device when you're holding it open so i think that's something that hopefully other foldables will adopt. Because they're sort even because they're trying to distribute the parts evenly across the

"Google has discontinued the pixel slate. Which was its first flagship tablets. And that's all the way back in october. Two thousand eighteen. Apparently now the game plan is to focus on laptops. Like the pixelbook go. That's the plan now. But hey in six months. I might be reporting how they're discontinuing all pixel books. You never know. Quoting nine to five google at the start of last month we reported on the pixel site was out of stock in the us. Canada and uk inventory did not return in the intervening weeks and the google store today. Remove the product listing entirely. It's also no longer shown under the main pixelbook tab. The pixelbook pen was also taken down. Though replacement tips remain available. Rohit Prasad Amazon VP and Head Scientist for Alexa AI Recalls His First Day at Amazon

"So now in two thousand thirteen when you arrived at amazon that was pre echo But they were already working and they've been working on the project for several years at that point So they've been working at echo alexa. But we hadn't seen it in the wild yet. So why don't you give me a perspective. And you and i've talked about this briefly in the past but only very briefly i've talked to l. lenzi about a few other folks who were there early. What was it like for you to coming in at that stage before launched but after they were a little ways along maybe quite a ways quite a way as long in developing the early and sanitation alexa. My first day was exhilarating My is just little. When i saw this device which was in hardware from it already existed The what we know. The iconic echoed the sorta which is just right behind accident as all the signatures from the people who actually were on their project the daily launched So that of course is quite as sweet memories from those days And the those day was really exhilarating for me Because i felt this was the dream. That every searcher wondered where khan and make it possible very bored it was Of course it was a humbling in the same way like in the industries for so long that it i like well. Is this even possible to get done. And the only days when. I was frozen You mentioned lindsay. I was in office. He tried to demo. It did not work. But i felt like that's great. I have a huge opportunity to make it work. So so it was timely in many ways and And i think the team had come a long way in terms of what What was again on a long journey to launch But we had Especially the hardware was bare and It's was essentially the elements of making far field special recognition and large-scale natural understanding and decision. Making this happen which was I was hired to do and it was Just fascinating Day one. I still remember and it will be Something that i'll never forget how appropriate you will remember day. One so inside joke for everybody. Following amazon's So i've talked to jeff adams about this when the app was originally acquired and he said they had no idea what they were getting into. They didn't know what the project was or anything. So you know that was. That was a couple years before you when you were being interviewed for this job. did you know. Did they tell you that they were building a smart speaker. Not those specifics. at all was completely unknown. It was clear though that it was something revolutionary something that hasn't been done before But it was very hard for me to imagine the exact form factor of actual What kind of device. It is and to be honest. I was surprised by looking at this water walls and had beast enough to say that there was something transformational As a possibility for future. And that's why i join amazon It was quite comfortable in what i was doing. And was being challenged in many different ways but that bar of being truly revolutionary and the fact that we had a company which was highly customer obsessed and the scale that can make This technology of a i really useful for millions and millions of customers was what brought me

"Form factor more popular. We could even see an x eighty. Six of version of this form factor. I predict latina. Panda will probably do that since they have an x eighty six small board computer anyway. So let's say handle. Why not you know you could if you really wanted to. If you have a laptop laying around you could Turn that into keyboard computer. I mean basically what you had to do as opened the thing up disconnect your monitor and totally removed the monitor from that or the lcd panel. Then hook it up to an external monitor and bam. It's a keyboard computer like your commodore sixty four or something you know. I like the idea of the form factor. Let me know he s saying. Do you like the idea of the keyboard. Computer form factor. I did not see anyone commenting on the livestream of this podcast episode today. It's fine because i know i didn't really announce the exact time ahead of time. The that's totally fine. "You know. We have great storage mediums to that would work in it. You know hard drive. Kin be pretty big laptop hard drives might be else fit inside a keyboard computer though right so and a half or three and a half inch drives ziadeh. That's you know those Two and a half inch drives would work fabulously in the keyboard computer. But now we've got even smaller form factors for the storage like dot to envy me. They are super awesome for those smaller form factors and they booed up fast seriously fast. I love it. I'm sure you'd it too. We've had laptop. Gps for years in the desktop jeep. use The graphics cards. They can be pretty. They could be pretty big. I i'll be honest We've had laptop. Gps though that would be great in a keyboard computer. Like what was it. The emma short. I'm getting a form. Our technologies could fused. I think maxim form are the emec sem standard. I think something like that. I probably a off. It's been awhile since. I've looked a whole lot at gps but there are standards for laptop. Gpa's that we ought to be able to use an keyboard computers too. I don't understand why we don't have that so much. You know Something the size of the commodore sixty four victoria eighty. What provide adequate colin foremost cps and in modern gaming computers. If you want to play those games granted. I wouldn't overclock so much i will say that Keep your expectations are tamed. A bit maybe not the fastest. Gpo us again. We're talking laptop. Gp now laptop gpu's Do have a reputation of not being quite the same speed as their desktop counterparts. However in recent years that kind of changed. They've caught up more with their desktop counterparts. That's like i think it was like the ten series Or maybe the rtx twenty series. I can't remember really The gp us from it invidia were essentially the equivalent on the desktop or they were equal on the desktop and laptop. It was pretty amazing So also let's consider the more. Pc gaming goes to the cloud right. I'm personally not doing a whole lot of cloud gaming. The exception is an stream arcade. Which i am going to be reviewing next week by the way You know cloud gaming as Something that's getting more and more feasible. We're not there yet. But the more we go to the cloud the less need for super powerful hardware For gaming that you're going to need it's just the fact they're you know it's like you do not need your own. Rtx thirty eighty two. Run those games anymore. When they're up the cloud like i said we've still got a lot of issues. There's lag you know if you're on a slow connection cloud gaming tonight gonna work very well but connection are getting faster and faster so Let's see where will i'm looking at my notes here Keyboard computers Quite frankly i think they could. Rise in popularity again in the future For home computer on computing and Game in this well. I think keyboard computers would be great for that. You know Yeah my For they probably aren't going to be fans of the keyboard computer if it does. Make a comeback Me personally. I like the idea. Don't get me wrong. i i enjoy building. He sees but don't have the time to tinker like used to with belding. Pc's honestly i. I enjoy it. But i just don't have the time anymore I don't have the space a keyboard computer. My opinion is perfect you could just. I think you know a keyboard computer will be a great prebuilt seriously. Get a pre-built machine. That's a keyboard computer. I don't know why they're not doing this yet. But i think you know with the raspberry pi four hundred granted. It's an underpowered machine. Any gaming you're going to do that is going to be a either just simple kids games or whatever that the raspberry pi is often attended four. Or you know retro gaming relation you know it's great for that But i think you can have more powerful keyboard. Computers out there You know charge of the raspberry pi four hundred of course the raspberry pi four hundred by the way at a seventy dollars for the computer by itself and then one hundred dollars of for f. You're wanting the power supply power cable if you consider supplier nile the sd card with operate system. On it in the mouse yet That's the hundred dollar kit. I recommend gain the hundred dollar kit. Because it gives you. You need to get started. Otherwise you're going to have to buy the other stuff anyway unless you already have it Get two hundred data kid guys even if you already have some of the other stuff you know just makes life easier but Let's see. I predict that the raspberry pi four hundred Well make this.

"Like i said the exception as the apple. Two line of computers at apple to Let's see also Beefy colours were needed for. Pc's after a while when you had the intel x eighty six processors got faster more powerful. You needed that beefy colour and it just would not fit inside a lot of these Keyboard computers that were out unfortunately as really ashamed to but I mean if you liked the form factor. And i personally did i. I don't know why it's like the keyboard computer screams personal computer to be So yeah desktop boxes eventually I mean they were around like late. Eighties early nineties. Eventually that was replaced by the tower format that we still use today. is still have dell's that could do like either a desktop box or tower format But yeah most of your today are the tower format So yeah. I don't think i need to show that it's going to be kind of hard to pull my tower. Pc up because a i mean. Isn't it be that thing is freaking heavy. All right so Let's see that's your typical format today. The tower pc Let's see the benefits of the keyboard. Form factor Over the tower form factor that we know today your main computing unit was inside the keyboard. You didn't need a separate box and it potentially saved space depending on the design. You'd probably have an easier time reaching around the keyboard to plug in or unplug your devices that That you have would compared to your tower. Pc most people have their tower off to the side. Are all the dusk Or maybe even on the floor and you like to have to go around the back of the p. c. to plug in most devices exception as you know most Computers have a few usb ports of the front but you also have usb ports of the back you have bader reports of the back Other connections you know as a nice just to reach to the back of your keyboard plug things in or unplug things. Easy peasy right. Yeah super easy. The my opinion the downsides of the computer the keyboard computer typically there's a lack of upgrade ability again the apple two and two are the exception to this there might be some other exceptions that aware of So i'm sure there are. I'm just not Thinking about it right now Not as much room for. Coaling your cpu or gpu But you know as things are going mobile There's less of a deed they've really worked on this technology to the point where it doesn't get hot as it years to. We've seen an increase in gaming a mobile phones. We even have gaming phones so you know we could really jam that technology into a keyboard computer. Why not that's essentially kind of what the raspberry pi of four hundred as i showed you. It's running an arm processor. It's the same type of process or that. Your phone runs. Typically most foams have the arm processor.

"You're watching us on facebook. I don't know what's going on. It's kind of annoying. But of course we have the upload to the main podcast feed as well Be shorts checkout joey. Totally tech dot com or. Check us out on red circle or your favorite podcasts spotify. I tunes or apple. Music is what it is now lay of other places where own everywhere everything you're listening to. Joe is totally tech. Hope you're having a great day I've had a busy week a busy few weeks. Actually work is just driving me crazy by the way i need to update you guys on what's going on with the tech news and commentary. We are not doing that right now. Honestly it's been way too much work for me as of late along with my job and everything. I want to continue doing that but it just as at working out right now. It's a lot of preparation for the tech. There's a commentary also i should mention. I know i haven't done much lately as of exclusive content. We're going to get back to that. Do not worry. We've been on a holiday break for a bit and we got. We got an episode out last week on the main podcast at Bid difficult to do anything lately as far as exclusive content. We are doing that. I could do some exclusive content. That does not take as much preparation as attack. There's a commentary. So that's a good thing antonio is really busy As well i think he said he got a third job or something like that If i remember correctly he's still going to be the co host. At least as far as my plan is right now but today it's just me and you're going to be able to participate in this episode to if you're watching the live stream on facebook or the joey totally tech facebook and let's see. Do i have anyone and chat at the moment. I don't see anyone but thank you for watching. If you are watching. I appreciate it very much. So the topic of today's episode is the keyboard. Computer form factor. Now i have here a modern day version of the keyboard. Computer form factor I'll talk about that in a moment. i have a few versions of it of this. Actually what is the keyboard. Computer form factor. You may ask. Well i feel like the late seventies early eighties though you had computers like the commodore victoria eighty commodore sixty four one. Twenty eight certain amiga computers. You had the apple to add to we he. I ninety nine tandy. Trs one teini color computer. Teddy one thousand es and h x They were all keyboard computers or what we call keyboard computers Let's see if you're watching. You'll be able see what i'm talking about. This is a more retro example. This is the commodore vic twenty. That i'm holding up of course if you're listening to audio only on the main podcast You walk see it but you could look it up. You'll see Keyboard computer and thumbnail to give you an idea. So that's a more retro example of the keyboard computer and i am having s. She has hair at the moment with cables and stuff. Just because i am disorganized. Unfortunately a more modern example all of the keyboard computer it's the raspberry pi four hundred. This is it. I've been playing around with it lately. Probably my favorite modern day computer. It's a keyboard beater. i love it. I highly recommend that if you want to learn coding or anything like that if you want to get a kid computers. It's great. i love it. You may remember our re our absorb tongue-tied you may remember a review other tau on. Pc one also could be or keyboard computer. This thing though was crap. I don't recommend it get yourself the raspberry pi four hundred. I highly recommend it anyways. So let's see. Most of your computers today are not this. Form factor so Let's talk about why that is. I also Forgot to mention there's a more modern example are not as bad as the raspberry pi. Four hundred mayanja several years ago. Those the acis e keyboard that was a pc at side of the keyboard as well very retro. Feel and i know. I am not a including other keyboard computers out there. We've got hari. As far as retro goes atari eight bit line and then some newer stuff too but Yeah There's some that. I am not going over here. Which is fine. So let's see. Why did we switch to like the desktop box format and then later the tower format. Well let's see the the form factor fell out of favor in the early. Nineteen nineties Pc's had expansion slots as far as the Desktop boxes the later the towers Really the apple. Two line to to the apple two to we. They did have expansion slots those but that one was designed a bit differently. See on the apple two two you had the keyboard upfront. But then you had more of the entire box back. Where the monitor. What after type. Cert- on the apple two and three So yeah you could open that thing up. You had the keyboard like right. Said rydell the side slanted there. But then the whole motherboard Further back a full-size thing is pretty big compared to your commodore sixty four vic twenty or something like that that one did have expansion slots but most of your keyboard did not You did expand other ways. They'd have cartridge slots and whatnot. You could get ram expansion cartridges for vic twenty for example But you didn't open up generally to Upgrade them.

"Instead, the main Polaroid really only existed as a brand name, something that could be licensed flash forward to 2011 right, so the company is trying to re establish itself. It's trying to make this big comeback. And it had secured Booth space at CS 2011. I was actually there that year, and in fact I visited there booth that year and they had something Interesting on display. It was a digital camera in the form factor of sunglasses, and it was a product linked to Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga had joined Polaroid in 2010 as a creative director of specialty products. Of which these glasses were an example. And the glasses included not only a camera lens but also a pair of LCD screens inside the glasses so you could see the pictures you snapped. And there was an ear piece on the glasses that had a USB drive attached to it that served as the storage device where the glasses so you could store a certain number of images on them. They're supposed to come out during the holiday season in 2011. But they didn't. In fact, they never came out. Those several online retailers had pages set aside for pre orders. Eventually, Lady Gaga would leave Polaroid and no telling if it was because someone tried to poker face pop pop pop poker face. Next. I'll talk about during phones, All right, so Come and listen to the tale of the touring Robotics Industries, a company that intended to rise from the ashes of Nokia in Finland. And if you've listened to my Nokia episodes You know that the famous cellphone branch of the company moved over to Microsoft before effectively getting shut down. During robotics industries set up shop in an old Nokia manufacturing facility and former Nokia employees were the founders of this company, and they had high ambitions. They plan to make luxury smart phones and their first such device. It was called the touring phone. Originally it was meant to be a secure communications device. And if you were to send and receive messages on a couple of these touring bones You would be certain that all communications were safe because they were using in to end encryption on the devices, which would theoretically make it impossible for a snoop to see what you were sending back and forth. They only a few during phones ever made it out to people who had pre ordered them. S o. They never were really widely available. They didn't and they certainly didn't get to everyone who had back to the company. But some of those early builds did get to reviewers who I have to say, did not have a lot of good things to say about the device. At least one of the reviewers ruined a review model because they dunked it into water. The actual touring phone was supposed to be able to withstand such treatment is supposed be water resistant, but turned out the review. Models that were sent out were not built on that specific hardware specifications yet They were working with the selfish operating system and they had the the software on them. But they weren't the actual hardware handsets. And so the review model was ruined. The company kept talking about other phone models in the various design and production phases with frankly unbelievable specifications such as the 60 mega pixel camera, which is insane or hydrogen fuel cell batteries, which People have talked about that. No one's really used those for cell phones. As far as I can tell these, these concepts had names like the touring monolith shut, Cone and a touring phone cadenza. None of them ever came to market. People who preordered. The phone received an unfinished build of the Turing bone, which was really just meant to be a temporary solution, but it never became less temporary. The same was true for what would have been the second phone to actually make it out of the manufacturing facilities. That one was the passion Otto on Lee, a beta version of the handset ever made it to reviewers and a few early customers who had preordered the phone. This one ran on android, not sailfish, and the security features that were so central to the original touring phone were absent in this one. In February, 2018 touring robotics Industries declared bankruptcy and Finland The CEO Steve Child, said that it was a strategy meant to push pause on business operations while developing a new approach. General consensus seems to be that the company is kaput and no phone from them will ever be available for customer purchase. I've got a little bit more to say about gadgets that are vaporware. But before I do that, let's take another quick break to thank our sponsor..

Good day internet at patriotair dot com slash dpd s. Let's start with a few things you should know. Amazon has discontinued its prime pantry. Grocery and household item service products previously available in pantry will now be available like any other products on amazon. So it's not going away to gather but the service itself prime pantry launched in twenty fourteen offering reduced shipping on up to forty five pounds of household goods for a monthly fee. Amazon node vied prime pant pantry subscribers about the closure in december and then issued refunds the. Uk's competition and markets authority launched an investigation into google's privacy sandbox. That would block third party. It's also heavier and thicker overall but it also now starts at five hundred forty nine dollars instead of one thousand dollars. That has a thirteen point. Three inch nineteen twenty by ten eight hundred sixteen nine. Lcd touchscreen with the dual core intel seller on five twenty five you upgradable to an intel core. I three ten ten eleven ten one. one zero. You eight gigs. Ram and one hundred twenty five gigs of storage for six hundred ninety nine dollars a shortage of semiconductors affecting automakers. Volkswagen said last month that they needed to adjust first-quarter manufacturing plans around the globe because of the shortage. Now honda says it will cut domestic output by about four thousand cars this month at one of its factories in japan nissan is adjusting production numbers for its note hatchback model and ford has moved up previously planned downtime at a kentucky plant for its sport utility vehicle factory to the jin chips all right. Well we're talking about cars. Let's talk about the the apple car. Yeah a lot of rumors as of late will really over the last few years. But but but the rumors had resurfaced recently and hyundais. Now talking to apple about kerr's so says the company hyundai representative told cnbc quotes. We understand that apple isn't discussion with a variety of global automakers including hyundai motor as the discussion is at its early stage. Nothing has been decided. Korean economic daily said that apple suggested the arrangements and hundred was reviewing the terms that involved e production and also battery development hyundai has had his own battery platform called e. g. m. p. going into production later this year. So might be saying what you're doing. Reuters sources say that apple would like to produce a passenger vehicle by twenty twenty four however might not be that date bloomberg's mark gurman reports in thomas e. v. from apple is five to seven years away and michio recently said he wouldn't be surprised if it takes until twenty twenty eight. Yes what's probably going on. Here is apple and i think this significant part has decided to start investigating how they would build. Whatever it is. They're going to build whether it's a whole car or an integrated platform and they're going to different manufacturers and parts suppliers and folks like magna including hyundai. And saying what are you got. How can you help us with this. And is a great company for this because they make parts they make systems. They make full cars. There's all kinds of services in the conday company that could play a part with apple so it may not be. That apple knows what they want from hyundai. It may just be that they're going and saying hey let's talk. You do a lot of the kinds of things that we think we're going to need. I'm pretty excited about this. I just got my first hyundai ever this year and my perception of this story was weight but hyundai currently uses android auto and a lot of their their cars. So i would love to see. How apple would integrate Hyundai's current technologies into something that is very useful for that apple ecosystem not just looking at e itself but also the The the systems inside of it the controls in how they would manage that four a driver and a passenger in the car. Yeah i mean. I think that's one of the big questions that i have is okay. Let's say let's say it's hyundai that that applet ended up working with with clearly not set in stone at least from what we know at this point. But let's say it's the companies for kicks. Let's imagine that that's what it is. Yeah it is. It is an apple car that hyundai produces a lot of parts for the way that works with lots of other companies to produce other hardware for apple. I mean that that's the loftiest kind of goal that we're looking at and maybe that would take till twenty twenty eight at you know if if apple was lucky. I think it probably has more to do with like you said shannon not that you know android auto wouldn't still be prevalent in a lot of passenger vehicles but maybe at some sort of it's a special relationship. It's it's a special kind of os inside a car that is supposed to you. Know i don't know move some merch because What apple is providing on the software side is is. Is that much more interesting. I really don't know if you look at that. Bloomberg article mark gurman sources are saying that Tesla people that apple has hired are working on things like interior exterior. Drive train stereo. Desist the kinds of things. You need when you're building a car not carting a software platform so then the question becomes is it the apple car period. Maybe hendaye makes it. Maybe somebody else makes it. And you know they'll figure out how to distribute it or is it the apple car by sunday and you go to hyundai dealership to buy it the way you went to an. At and t. store to an apple iphone but it's really apples car in cooperation with sunday. Are there multiple partners. I mean that's all the kind of stuff we're waiting to see but it really does feel like we have gotten to the point where this is no longer just yeah. They're working on project titan. They don't know what they're gonna do to. They have an idea. It's more than just software and they're working out the details. Maybe they don't even know that yet. Well i'm interested to see what happens but we also have some other news. Security among the systems impacted by the solar winds attack is the electron filing system. Used by the us federal courts at investigation is underway to determine if confidentiality of documents filed with the courts was breached and as a result starting wednesday confidential documents filed with the courts will be stored on standalone systems. Not uploaded big difference so these are documents sealed from public access because they contain sensitive information like investigative techniques identities of informants and a lot more other. Us federal agencies affected included the justice department the state treasury and energy departments as well solar winds has engaged. The krebs stay most security consulting group to help deal with this attack. That firm was formed by alex. Stamos the former chief security officer at yahoo and facebook and chris krebs the former director of the us cybersecurity and infrastructure security agency or sisa. So krebs was fired last month. By the president after finding no evidence of with voting systems in the twenty twenty election. Yeah stamos first of all brilliant for those two to team up and smart for solar winds to engage them for what they say is Helping with transparency with companies that are affected But this we we are not done finding out how bad this is. There are reports that there may have been other ways that this whoever is behind this intruded beyond just solar winds. They're finding evidence of that. They have not been able to root out the people that got into this vulnerability from all systems yet. They're still in there in a lot of cases. And you know this. This kind of confidential information is exactly the kind of thing you fear that someone would get intruding into a government system informants investigative techniques that you can now learn from to evade being prosecuted or caught yourself. That's that's crown jewel type stuff it's it's very interesting. In fact krebs spoke on record saying that it could potentially take years to figure out how deep the solar winds attack actually went and how many different kinds of infrastructure. You know brands and everything that it might have affected so this is not something. That's going to die anytime soon. I'm glad that they are reaching out. Craig's and stay most though because that i agree with you tom. It's excellent. excellent team roku made a few interesting announcements roku says. Npd data shows that the roku s was the top selling smarter operating system in the us and canada in two thousand twenty thirty one percent market share in canada. Thirty eight percent in the united states That's pushed the samsung's tizen number two. At least we don't actually know samsung's ties and was number. One in two thousand nineteen also announced a wireless soundbar reference design that uses wifi for its roku. Tv ready program remember. Last year roku announced the program which had a designed for wired. Sound bars. The program includes tcl. Pokemon on an element has just announced. They'll join as well with two point. Two point one ready sound bars roku tv ready to expand internationally later this year as well. But here's the big roku news roku has agreed to acquire exclusive global distribution rights to more than seventy five Shows documentaries some of which had not been released before qube shutdown. So there'll be some new stuff that nobody's ever seen after their exclusivity deal expires. That'll happen in a bit more than a year. Depending on the show roku will still have the rights to show the content just not exclusively until thousand twenty seven the content will have to be presented in original increments of ten minutes or less. The deal doesn't let them stitch it altogether. The content will be added to the more than forty thousand movies and tv shows already available. In the roku channel shows include from Be anyway punked. Murder house. Flip and dummy which stars anna kendrick. I never watched the new punk. I heard had its moments. The whole qube thing. It's really interesting to me because it was sort of like. It crashed and burned so quickly. And there's a lotta shot and friday around folks in the industry about it. And i think that's not because qube was doing things wrong. It was because the company had raised so much money time. Because you know. They had meg whitman. Jeffrey katzenberg who are you know. Heavy hitters and there was a little bit of like you are being to embassies and therefore you shall fail. The company did fail and the idea that some creators will have a new life on another platform shows. That just don't even saw but people still worked on. And maybe you're really good. I think this this makes a lotta sense and good for roku to get exclusivity for at least a few years so does roku have to wait at all in order to start showing this content or can happen immediately. I don't know when the start date. Whenever the deal is you know goes into effect. Then they'll immediately be able to to show it so you know within a month or so it would be my guess anyway but no they. They don't have once. The deal is actually in effect. They don't have to wait. What's going on here. is that the baby. Production companies own the rights to their own stuff but they have a two year exclusive for each one of their shows with qube and those two year exclusives are now being transferred to roku so roka will be able to have the exclusive for the remainder of whatever. The period was with quick. That's why it's more a year. Exclusively goes away then they still have the right to show it until twenty twenty seven but the production companies that made it can now start shopping at around to other places as well so the production companies do hold the content and remember this is just the content. Qube is still in a over. Its turnstile technology which is holding it up from selling its technology and i would expect once it resolves that lawsuit should resolve it in a way that they still hold their technology. They'll sell that to so this isn't the last you're going to hear could be selling off a part of it. I would imagine. Gotcha yeah that whole. The whole technology part of qube was again was an ambitious thing that was released at a very inopportune time in twenty twenty when everyone was like. We're just sitting at home like we don't need this like mobile phone technology. It's like cool that you can shifted around but you can't even cast thing. I mean the company did fix that pretty soon after allow about she was just. I mean it's just did. The timing couldn't be worse but that technology when you think of it in a variety of other form factors such as monitors that swivel talked about some of those yesterday. I don't know that qube or tiktok or snapchat or all of the stuff where we're like. Oh yeah that's the. That's the portrait view. Rather than landscape view. That works for certain apps is is is all that this is four. I think there's more to it So we'll see what happens and there's patents and things that are always valuable because you can use those to extract some concessions and money and stuff. So yeah expect that all to come join the conversation in our discord which you can join by linking to a patriotic. Can't get in there and talk about your favourite qube shows with all the other discord folks. Just lincoln to your patriotic out at patriotair dot com slash. Dpd s all right shannon. How do you clone a security key. Well i i will say please do not stop using your security keys because of this story i will explain it. Researchers from ninja lab published a paper on thursday showing how you could clone a google tightened security gate this is a two factor authentication key which is very similar to a you. Be key that you have to plug in or tap in order to access an account after putting in your username or your password credentials. Were both so in order to pull off the clone. You would need physical access to the key for about ten hours. Sometimes a minimum of ten hours just kind of depends on how good you are at this. About twelve thousand dollars worth of equipment physical equipment and custom software and some advanced skills in electrical engineering and cryptography as well. So you have to remove the chip and then take measurements of it at a being registered on each account that you went to attack the measurements observe electro magnetic radiation as the chip generates digital signatures that let the attacker slowly deduced the private key so measurements take about six hours per account. That's not including taking apart. The original tighten security key putting it back together. Then you need to seal the chip back into its case. You also need the targets password in order for this to work. So the reason it works is because of vulnerability in the security hardware chip residing within the google titan key and that is called an eighty seven hundred x by this company called. Xp if it's exploited in attacker could grab the elliptic curve cryptographic private key for the account and the same chip is actually found in other two factor. Authentication physical tokens as well like There's a ubiquity that it's found in but chances of attack or very very minimal given the scope of the attack so if you do all of this without the target ever noticing then they would never duplicated key but again given the scope given how much it costs and everything behind the scenes probably when it happened to normal user. The point of these security keys being the best way to use For two factor. Is that you can't even get at your private key right you. Nobody has to be able to get in there like the chip. Just doesn't make it available so the fact that they were able to get in there and get it is huge. You know the fact that they were able to do this is significant. But i mean if you're not a target of an advanced persistent threat. You don't need to worry about this. No one's going to go to the trouble to do this. And even if you're a target. I would guess shannon that most of them probably would be able to notice if someone took their key for ten hours or more you. You likely likely would especially since a lot of people with hardware tokens like google titan will stick them on a on their keychain for example like with their house keys or whatever wherever they keep all those personal physical devices that they don't want lost or stolen they keep them all on engaging so if somebody was to take one of these out of your purse out of your gym locker wherever it might be and remove it for like ten hour street minimum. You would likely know that this would have happened. the neat thing about these chips inside of these. Google tightened security keys. And any other cryptographic hardware tokens like these is that. Even the manufacturer doesn't know the private key so the fact that they were able to find vulnerability on these specific chipsets is really interesting. And i think that's the important bit of that. Is is even though the google titan like the end all be all of really excellent. Two factor authentication. There's always. The potential that vulnerabilities can be found. So i'm happy that this research came out. It's so fascinating and it's so interesting in this means that an x. p. and other security chipset manufacturers that sell these teeny tiny chips to google or whoever the company might be They can build on this. They can research and figure out what the next version of their chipset needs to entail in order to not be vulnerable to this again in the future. Yeah i mean this is really a good security story right. We finally figured out because there's always a way right. We finally figured out the way you get the private key out of a security key and guess what it's really hard takes a long time and now that we know it we can make it even harder and hopefully you know push that barrier out even further and even if somebody did have time to do this and you didn't notice i was reading the paper because i'm a huge nerd and they go as far as using fuming fuming nitric acid in order to get like melt the epoxy off of the original google titan. How are you going to put that back together. In order for somebody to not notice like there's a lot of intricacies with this attack in order for it to actually be pulled off so chances are very very slim that somebody would be able to pull off so again as i said at the very beginning. Don't stop using your google tightened security key if you have one keep using it because chances are you would never be attacked with this. Just just know if you haven't seen it in ten hours look together strange. This is going to be in a movie though. I'm calling that shot right now. We're gonna we're gonna see this movie. Where like i hope so. Somebody goes into surgery and they take his key and they go out and do all this and they slip it back in because ten hours later. He wakes up from anesthesia on something like that. I just hope they talked to the researchers so they actually show it off right. Yeah Sony tv and audio announcements Starting with details for its own tv lineup. Sticking with lead ravi x four k and k. Tv's will support four k at one hundred twenty hertz variable refresh rate vr as well as a l l m low latency mode and e arc. These are all things that are important. If you've got a ps five now you've got sony. Tv they can go. That sony also has an improved a chip that is going to improve the picture and sound positioning. So it aligns with what you see on the screen. Sony's master series. Tv's will come with a sensor that adjusts white balanced immense. Your ambiente color temp. You don't have to do anything they'll just do it. Also an aluminum heat shield. That will make for brighter. All the sets will support. Hdmi two point one. Another big one for ps five dolby vision hdr angle tv. Sony also announced. It's three hundred sixty reality audio platform if you're not familiar with three hundred sixty degree audio places instruments and vocals in a virtual sound field around your head but using just the one speaker so you can do this in an amazon echo or google. Home sony will start streaming video with three sixty audio later this year. Starting with concert from zara larsson on january eleventh. And somebody's gonna make speakers that support this. It'll be may supported by other speakers as well. But sony is going to put out the are five thousand and three thousand They've got that dark cloth. Surface that all these speakers seem to have these days with either bronze or silver accents. Work with google and amazon assistance and can connect to select sony abroad via. Tv's as well as supporting wi fi bluetooth. Spotify connect in google cast. The speakers do automated calibration to the room. They're in donut. The press a button for that. Either and we'll simulate three hundred sixty degree audio for stereo tracks as well. The five thousand cost five hundred pounds or five hundred ninety nine euros no. Us price yet on the three thousand two hundred eighty pounds. Three hundred fifty nine euros. This seems this. Seems like it's shaping up to be one of the trends. Is this the sort of three hundred sixty degree audio while you're listening to your black bank and it's just one speaker or potentially a couple of speakers ativan. Maybe yeah yeah already supported. Yeah there's less of kind of like What do i have to do. Five point one surround or at least get a couple of speakers and make them a stereo pair type thing. I really haven't heard this in. I don't know. I used to hang out at magnolia at best. Buy all the time. And just like geek out on stuff like this. of course. this technology wasn't around at the time. But it's really come on. Let's turn on some stuff and see the speakers. Do it works well. Then that's awesome my first reaction because i got rid of my kind of pants speakers some years ago because friend of mine needed them more than i did and i didn't have room in my apartment but i miss that i'm also an a. A permanent now that's smaller and kind of has a lot of weird angles and i find audio bounces off walls in wiz. That wouldn't if it was more of a square box broom So i'm not sure that i'm the perfect target market for this. You're the you're the one puts this through its paces and sees if it really works. Yeah if i could actually work as advertised again with some funny angles in a big old frame. Then i'm i'm really into this and i've always been. I don't have a sony. Tv currently sorry zony. But i was abroad. Bravi a person for years. Nears i think what the new bravi line is coming out with. Looks really nice. And i mean not totally in the market for a new tv. But i like the fact that i might get a new sony again paired up with a sony speaker. You got three six. Yeah already got all this stuff. It's going to be a messed anyway. You slice it. But i like. I like this to be sixty reality audio platform. What would you have set up in your house. I was straight up going to mention sonos because if if it doesn't have the connectability to be able to work with all of my other platforms that currently have invested in. Then chances are i wouldn't buy it. So i do have sono says in my house and i do have some issues connecting those with other speakers in the household to like like my google hub for example so the fact that this works with google and amazon assistant the speaker specifically The audio speakers. I think that's pretty cool. I like that. They are bringing that in and i am interested because i do live in a household. That has very high ceilings. How this would work in that kind of environment. So yeah. I'm very interested in the audio aspect. Well you might also be interested in what colour has come out. Oh yes the folks who make things like toilets and and sinks and lots of appliances however. Been a real. Cas mainstay for the last few years for some cool innovations and this year is no different. Even though we're not in vegas koehler has a new smart bathtub called the stillness bath. That lets you use an app or use your voice using google or amazon's assistance to fill up the water or perhaps set the mood by changing the color of the lights around the tab or even add some fog. You know you wanna kind of pretend like you're in the then present routines also turn on features in a certain orders if you wanna get kind of creative. that's cool. Yeah the certain amount of limitations with the base model and the base model is not cheap so temperature and depth control models alone will cost around eight thousand six hundred ninety eight dollars. That's right it's almost nine thousand dollar bathtub. If you want the experience tower that lets you activate fog and aromatherapy. That will run you just over ten thousand dollars. Both models are available in july. There are real things and if you want the version with lights and floor grades for overflow fifteen thousand nine hundred ninety eight dollars available. This october signed me off. I won't be buying those. Nope not even a little bit but we could have taken a bath at s in the new in the pre show roger was like. Why would you want fog. It's like this. Why does anyone want to be on. Yeah racist luxury suites in hotels for sure as well as apple's houses sure yeah something well. Yeah it's it's that like hey look at what my bath can do people go. Wow very fancy and then you know ten years from now will be like remember when we thought it was fancied to talk to your bathtub so that it would start filling up without touching it but Yeah it's it's somewhat silly because of the price. But i'm not really much of a bath person but they do look very nice all right. Let's check out the mail bag but ads do it. Nick wrote in with a pronunciation. Ramps own neck. You are not alone he says. Ac's rog is an initial list. Because it's our og like fbi or cia. People say ron yet. They're lower end gaming brand tough not initially them. It's an acronym like scuba or produce you f but pronounced off. It's like ace's can't make up their name minds. Then there's strict which is our subbrand strikes as a word it's a completely nonsensical made up word. But it's a word and you pronounce it as such nick as honestly as somebody. That buys a lot of hardware. Because i've rarely had a bad experience with them over the past twenty years. I am baffled by some branding decisions. The one the bugs me. The most is the strict subbrand. Sometimes acis makes the tricks products. The high end product in the product stock yet other times. It's a mid range product. Apple working on foldable iPhone, report says

"Well a new year might mean some new form factors for technology. Tom's guide passing along report from time when he's united daily news. That apple reportedly commissioned to prototype shells from foxconn for foldable displays. Now this is a very low reliability source also even if it's true it just means that apple commissioned some prototypes doesn't mean they're even going to do this but One would be a book like design like the surface duo and the other a more standard smartphone designed that would fold in half kinda like the motorola razor or or the the samsung foldable phone december. Thirty first apple patent filing also shows a device that folds both in and out kind of a combination of the galaxy z flip and the wall way made x. So yeah there could be something in the works. I'm sure it'll be a long time if and when we ever see. But that's interesting to

Xbox Series S Review

"The first console to launch. On tuesday of this last week was the xbox series x and s so i should just. We'll just start in chronological order and i. I have lots of thoughts about the xbox series x. But i'm actually very curious andrea about the xbox series s because i saw on your instagram and twitter that you have one of those the smaller less expensive consoles. And you're really. I think from what i read. Taken by the form factor. If nothing else right. I love that little thing. So xbox was kind enough to send what could games and xbox series x so i purchased for myself an xbox series s because i knew that i was going to need one in our. What's could game studio. But i also wanted one in the living room where i'm going to play it most of the time and so like well. I don't really need four k because streaming and four k still just isn't really a thing that's available on twitch rip mixer they really were doing high resolution streaming the best out of anybody. I know that caffeine actually doesn't pretty good um high resolution streaming as well. But i was like what the xbox series s is going to work for me in the studio because i don't need really more than fourteen forty p and i love the form factor. It's so small. And i love that compared to the vsbn. Which is just a monster ons. Which i know we'll get to in just a little bit but the value proposition. That microsoft is bringing with xbox game pass. Xbox game pass ultimate in for those who are interested xbox game cloud x. cloud wherever they're going to finalize that name to be. I think that it's a really great opportunity for people to get in and obviously we saw the news that we're gonna talk about just the second year that microsoft announced its their biggest console launch ever and that is to do because of the xbox series s. I agree having that low price. Point was really smart. i mean obviously. We've seen nintendo reap the benefits of having a low price point for new hardware for generations. Now and it. It actually like the sony and microsoft finally got around to realizing. Oh yeah if we don't charge through the nose for these things people buy more of them But tell me a little bit about your experience using the the s are you noticing Does it feel like a generational upgrade from your xbox one. It's interesting that you bring that up because that was one of my critiques of the new consoles that they didn't feel like a gigantic leap forward from the xbox one x specifically now i know that most consumers are probably changing generations between their original xbox one or potentially they have the xbox one s. But there's probably not as many people. Doing what i did going from the one x to these series x and the series as the low times of course are definitely faster. But i think microsoft. I don't know how. I really feel about the fact that they did not change the i like. They launched this he on the old generation and they kept at the same. I know that there's a big portion of the games out there that are like thank goodness. I don't wanna have to relearn something. But i just i think it kind of takes a little bit of that shiny sparkly new console feel away from it and overall. I just didn't think that outside of the loading times that there was anything dramatically new. And i think a lot has to do with the fact that there wasn't a first party exclusive game like now they have launched with halo infinite in halo. Infinite was running at sixty frames per second fourteen forty p on the xbox series s different story.

Xbox Series X review: A sports car with no gas

"Jump into this power at what cost. What are we getting the xbox series x. So i got my hands on this a while ago. This is a nice machine. it's nice it's i. use the word. Sleek people got mad at me on twitter. I don't really give a shit people. Get mad about everything but you instead could say simplistic. I like the design. This design works both vertically and horizontally. Once i put it in the actual receptacle for the stand and everything. I didn't mind it being horizontal. Vertical works as well. It depends on the system. Set up in place i will say it as one solid unit. That is for sure wherever you put it. You're not going to have to worry. It's also a fingerprint magnet. This thing will attract fingerprints from people not even at your house. There's a crime scene. The fingerprints will be on the xbox series x in fact. I'm not putting it out of my mind that perhaps microsoft's working with police on this because it is absolutely bat shit insane. How that thing can attract fingerprints from like fifty feet away. I burn my fingerprints off. They'd still know who who had it. So you get the system. Young package it you get your hd mike you plug everything and it's a fairly simple set up a rectangular box. What more is there to say. it's black. it's got a button on the front rejecting your disks and it's got a button on the front for sinking your controller with the bluetooth receiver. All of that kind of stuff. The typical stuff that you expect to see on a normal xbox system because this is a system like the playstation both are built a good deal on their brethren and were skin. See that win. I talk about things like backwards compatibility but also designed for the xbox in particular now in the back of xbox you have to. Usb's on the front. You have one usb. None of them are the us usb. C form factor. They're all just normal. Usb form factor you can plug in any external normal drive that you would have for usb and it'll see that also and the back you just got your hdmi you got your storage port for an extra envy emmy that you can buy and plug in and you have your power plug. That's it getting it. All set up is the next step. We're going to talk about so you plug this thing. In what happens. You have about a five to ten minute process where you take your old account and you move here. This is identical to what we saw with the xbox exits whenever you update and it's really not that difficult. Microsoft is made sure to make that onboard process. Pretty fricken easy you just sorta pop in and there's no issues there. It takes just a couple moments to get everything solidified setup and boom. You're in now. once you are in. You will adjust a couple settings for example like your privacy and so forth and connect to the net. That kind of thing. The wireless adapter in this i will say is probably better than the one in the x. The one in the original x there were some complaints about that including myself. I had some issues with it was just really susceptible to network interference. It was susceptible to other systems anywhere near it. And i have noticed with the series x none of those issues occur. That is a total boone. I'm not saying you wanna do this. Wireless and play wirelessly. You really can't beat a wired connection but that is a huge plus to see something like that on a system so onboarding. Fifteen minutes tops. You're in even if you don't have an account you just give it an e mail system and boom you're there now let's talk about the o. S because the os is important but we should all remember that. This is built on the backs of their brothers. Both houses for the new systems and assuming i switch three or whatever they're going to call it switch to switch to light. They'll all have some kind of basic backbone. That's the same and we see that with the xbox series x it's just the same exact a west because they don't really want it to be any different because they won't be people to be able to play on the series s the series x the xbox x. or the xbox one i think that makes sense including the x. cloud i think so you've got all these different systems are all basically set up the same way. They've gone away from the more horizontal kind of setup that we saw win. This system really came out and it's gone to more of a vertical setup as well as a nested kind of vertical menu. It works fine. Some people like it. Some people don't. I don't mind here. Removing pins and adding pins four games as quite easy so you go in. You can pick a game you say. Add to the home it pops up and now it also fills that with twitch channel streaming it and that kind of stuff some really good setup and very easy to overall just navigate when it comes down to it now when i say easy. I don't mean you're gonna find everything really quickly. I just mean that nothing is more than one or two or three steps away which i'm okay with even if it's a little bit cumbersome at first that's actually pretty nice i do get that some people just don't like that tile system and i absolutely agree i can see it not being the best but it works now here also. There's some customization that you can do for your background your screen. You can throw that up can take a screen shot of a game. Boom that can be your background all stuff that we've seen before this is also place where you can look at your storage. You can look at your sharing. What type of pictures you've taken. What type of videos but will get to that in a bit when i talk about the controller itself as an os. I went in. And i tested some stuff out now. First thing i did was. I went in and i wanted to see. How easy was it to move games back and forth with all basically identical system that we got with the original xbox it's lickety-split fast and of course even faster here because of the internal envy emmy which i'm gonna talk about a second. It's mind blowing. How fast this thing transfers and it can transfer games back and forth really really quickly so using your external usb even if it's a slower. Ssd if it's an actual normal hard-drive it's going to be basically at its top speed for transferring. Which isn't going to be bad anyway in writing out to. It's not really the issue anyway. Most of the time the more important thing is going to be taken a game off of it as let's say storage and move on to the actual envy me. Additionally this thing. I was playing different games. I was using quick resume. Which will discuss here in a moment. The os special features and i was using various different parts of the xbox series x the entire time. It didn't get warm at all. I know somebody said that. They burn their hand on it or something like that. But i have no absolute clue what's going on. There was no heat additions and it is not audible to not audible with anything else or above anything else. There's no jet kind of you know air coming out of this that we expect in some electronics. It's very nice. Super quiet may not necessarily have the best aesthetic for somebody who wants something completely modern in their home but to me. It's the way it should be now when you jump into the os and you start messing around. You'll notice a couple of things. For example you have the ability to support fourteen. Forty p ten. Eighty p and four k. That sort of a big deal because some people are going to be using this on a monitor and some people be using this on monitors or tv's which is a little bit less rare that support Some kind of free freesync. Which is your ability to have the sync up your display and your console which i'll talk about the second We found that competitor systems. Don't seem to actually use fourteen forty piece of fourteen. Forty p is pretty good. We've already seen one game. Jaka that supports fourteen forty p moat and supports it. Well probably the best out of all the different modes so that is something to just be aware of. I think fourteen forty p for a lot of gamers is sort of a sweet spot. So what you have is an os. That's fairly compact is not surprising. Isn't a big step up but does everything pretty much faster but we are gonna talk about some special features. That has the first is quick resume. Now this is sort of being big news. The big news. Everybody's been like attention. Alert at eleven pm. Forget the elections. Let's talk about quick resume. I told you guys. I wasn't incredibly excited about quick resume. I just wasn't. I didn't know exactly what i was going to get out of it. And i've had a lotta time with this and i can say that there are some instances where quick resumed surprise. Me for instance if you have a couple people in your family and your playing different games. That's great but that's actually not as important to me as just a person who may have two or three games. They play during a week. Not at the same day. So i don't mean somebody. Playing may be a single player game and then go into a multiplayer waiting for that to load up because there might be some issues there in fact with quick resume for example. He wanted to wait in the lobby to me. This is more important when it comes to just having a bulk of games that you may have loaded up in the last week or so about five to six current or next gen games and then a more when it comes to prior games. It's going to depend on the size of the game and you cannot from what i can see clear that quick resume and take it on board as more storage. Quick resume is an inborn function. I don't think you can turn it off. I could not find an option but what quick resumed does and this is fantastic as it takes a dump and of the game status and it dumps it onto the envy me. What does this do. Well this allows you to basically not necessarily kwiksave save. You can use it for that. But i'll talk about that in a second. It basically allows for you to save the state of the game at any point and jump to another game. It's also stunningly quick. Even really on games that. I wouldn't expect that that would be a big deal. I noticed that with quick resume. It was actually very nice. So if you for instance. Were playing a little bit of batman a little bit of witcher three which are games of tests on before you can jump into those and i will say four is a in particular is known for some agree just loading times so looking at the os you have free sink as well freesync basically syncs up your monitor and it syncs up your video card inside of your console and it makes it so that there's no tearing on your screen a lot of teams. Don't support g sink or free sink. This is a free sink machine and it will support that if developers support in their game so be aware that some games on the xbox ex did support it and the series x were hoping is that moves forward it continues to free sink. That's awesome that they do that. Not really helps especially in a console where you might be a little challenged for some frames especially as you get on longer in the tooth with these kind of systems and you are looking at two. You're looking at the xbox series s which this is not a review of but the xbox series s a different form factor because is cut in half due to the jeep. Houben half the size does the same thing and also has free support which is pretty cool when you think about it now. The next thing up is auto. Hdr hdr upscaling. Basically what this does is it can take a game and it can make it. Hdr or as close as they can get to color map it to hdr taking into you know various different equations than knits. The power that is actually being shown on the screen and your colors. Luminosity everything it works. Okay there's one or two games where sorta finicky but overall it's still actually works better than most. Hdr games anyway. How many times of the person who knows. Hdr sets a game up. Knows it's got hdr and still has issues with it. It really doesn't add any additional issues. It's just when it works. It works and when it doesn't you're like wagon can go back to a normal. Sdr game fantastic. I wanna see more of those kinds of systems and it was something that was very surprising. I think a lot of people did not expect to see this kind of situation pop up but what it does is it allows for those older games to have that high pop look and color that we get from. Hdr and we get from newer titles. Where didn't even exist back then. We'll see some improvements when it comes to the way they map that as they move forward so looking at those kinds of things i jumped into games and jumped into games both current and prior. Now when you look at the backwards compatibility slash enhanced slash four series. Let's talk about those just for a second. Basically what you have is backwards compatible games that are just guaranteed to run on your series x. They will run in the same form or fashion. Maybe was something. Upscaled via whatever's going on in the hardware on the series x. Then you have your enhanced games. These are games that microsoft is looked at and said to the developers themselves. Let's improve some things. Let's look at the engine. Can we get some extra frames. And they're sort of. I would say a grey area between those ones where there's a great deal of work to make it sort of be better. And we have that with some enhanced versions of first party titles from microsoft where some enhanced versions just have one or two things like maybe some increase textures may be draw distance. Something like that and then you have others where it's frame rate draw distance textures. That's going to be a little bit iffy on which game gets what support. The fact is most of them are free. So hey what do you say. Put it in see if it works. I have yet to find a backwards compatible game that was backwards compatible on the xbox that is not on this that means games work as well. I have yet to find any of my titles not work. It wasn't a while ago but there was a patch to fix the one or two games. That i actually had an issue with and they work stellar your main version though on your series x is of course games made for it and games made ported for it so yuccas one of them you can watch my review that can be a little confusing however one of the great things about the xbox series x and s and now your normal xbox will have it as a filter us going to your games and you hit a button and you'll look the filter and change it to enhanced for series s or series x hit one button boom the games that show up that are enhanced directly for our. They're very cool. That's the smart delivery kind of thing that microsoft has been pushing. And i got to admit when i jumped in here at first i was like man won't be no thing i know what games i'm talking about. And that got in there like the so many games and then there's game pass games which which versions do. What the cool thing about smart delivery. It knows the platform you are delivering on. So whether you're on windows and you're looking at your listing of the different consuls. You have if you've ever got a game on the windows store by the way don't because terrible or if you're in your system itself it knows what it's getting. It knows which system needs what and it gives you that. Now the only difference that might be as where the series x is going to play a backwards compatible game and there is no version of an enhanced or a port directly for it. You will get basically that just backwards compatible game but again you can hit that button. You can see that filter very useful worked fine and i got to admit i hope all systems in the future do that kind of thing when backwards compatibility is so pressured and so pushed so looking at the power this system. What you have is a massive amount of power in a small amount of space and it is really shown in two ways. First the speed of everything going into games and fast travelling and games is mind blowing even entitles that are no way shape or form as of yet optimized for the system which are threes. Fast travel is so fast. Regardless you'll see some video in the background probably I'll try to record some. That is so fast that it is impossible to read most of the longer hints. This also occurred in multiple other games that were in no way shape or form enhanced for the system. This also occurred by the way off of the usb external. I wanna make sure that's clear the usb external ssd. I did have that. I wasn't using seventy two hundred. Rpm hard drive or anything but the external was so fast that reading the hints was almost impossible. Actually had this issue on yakuza. Which is a game made for the system where we had a transfer of speed and this is something that all the competitors going to be doing something we'll see on. Pc once envy ame really takes off on pc as well. Where companies that do hints during their loading screens are going to have to figure out a new way of doing it. Which i'm okay with by the way. Because i think sometimes the loading screen was a chance for us to go. Take a pee right not anymore. They are blinding. Quick resume is also patched directly into this. I wanna talk about quick. Because though i discussed it a moment ago as a loading feature. I didn't discuss it in the. I'm going to now. Which is the actual quick resume itself. So not only. Do we see games. That really aren't prepped. For this being absolutely stellar when it comes to loading times when you jump in there with a game that is set up for quick resume it is phenomenal to be able to jump into and out of a game as quickly as we see here in a couple of games that are specifically made for this you can see that this kind of system and architecture and the jump to ssd is such a boon for the console industry. This is awesome. It is a huge difference. It is hard to even qualify this or quantify it to you guys without you seen it firsthand and playing it so jumping into all these games including games. That weren't quick resumed to see how everything loaded. We have some insanely fast loading times. We have quick travel times in. Which are that are in the one point. Five second a range. That's insanity you've got ones that are even a little faster depending on how close you are. I jumped in and out. I looked at quick resume. And i looked at the transfer speeds and i see the fps on some of these games upping especially the games. Unfortunately there's a couple of for that. I can't discuss but we see these increases in power and i think that that's what's telling about this console in particular. Is that microsoft decided. They wanted to on board people with a new system and new power. It's a little bit like reading your pc right but not switching out windows. You are jumping into a new ecosystem when it comes to the hardware but the front end probably won't be that much different and maybe you won't even notice it and that sort of the way microsoft is set this up for instance in a lot of games you go in and you just do one or two options. Four k or performance mode in yakuza. It was normal and a resolution mode. And if i switched to fourteen forty p than it was actually the performance mode so you had like normal performance and high resolution so you have these different modes that are sort of able to you. But it's not confusing. And i like that because when i talked about all these things these different types of software your backwards compatible your made for your enhanced your free sink. It can be confusing and microsoft has made it so that the things i talked to you about. You really don't even need to give a shit about because you will notice the moment you load batman and it's loading so fast that when you hit a button it's just the movies over and the game has started and you're sitting there going okay. That is the cool part of these systems. This new cpu power new gp our our gp power offer resolution. They offer the frame rate that we've been wanting as advancements in these consoles especially since we're getting away from mobile see pews but we're seeing it in a different way which is the loading which is very cool. It's not world changing. I will admit that it's not world changing. I'm excited about it. I enjoyed it. I think it's a huge boon but it's not world changing but at the same time it's improvements in a place we haven't seen before we have been tied down to that. Ancient architecture of old hard drives that have always just creaked along and just you just waiting for the spindle to start going on rare rare. When you're like oh my god it's dying and here with ssd it's just nothing. It just works. However i did have a couple issues. I wanna bring up the first issue other than some issues with the os is. I jumped in. And i use quick resume on three games. I know support. It and i bounced in and out about nine times in out into the other into the one into the out of the other one about the fifth time twice so i did this ten times about every fifth time i would load into a game and there would be a moment where the controller and the xbox didn't know i was there and and the character the game would be running the sound would be running. This is a small thing. But i just want to mention it because i'm assuming consumers are going to notice this and nothing happened and i'd be like whoa. We'll i'd have to hit a button a couple times and then it'd be like oh and the character move yet when i went back and forth back into it. It didn't happen. It's almost like the second or third returned to that game. There was a momentary issue. Not a huge deal but something you should be aware of also when jumping into and out of these games be aware saving the state. Okay so if the game is not quick resumed capable you could possibly end up having to save. That's all the way back at a quick save area. I would personally say quick. Resume as great but make sure game supports it with the icon. That's the filter. Because if you don't and you do think you're doing quick save and quick resume and you pop out and then pop back in. It's going to go back to the main title and you can end up losing whatever cover or whatever you know. Save that you actually had. This is also something. I noticed because in some games i would drop in out in the game would say we've lost connection with controller. A this is important. Because i know some people are saying i want to be able to play a multiplayer game and have it loading up into a lobby. That may take me a long time to get into and then play a single player game and occasionally go back and forth now. This isn't instantaneous. When you're quick resuming so be aware that but additionally you will occasionally have the issue where it just pops in and it's lost connection and it sort of has to be reminded that you're there with that caveat it still works really well and with that caveat of the frame rate being a little bit honky on the fourth third tenth try. It just works the way i expected it to work. It works awesome. The os does exactly what i expected. So when you look at this system. The next big thing is the controller. I don't know how long i'm going. What are we. We're at twenty five minutes. Oh my god. I gotta shortness up. Anyway i'm gonna talk real quick. I'm not so you've got your controller. Standard controller exports controller. Not the elite improved d pad. I like it not bad. And it's got usb c for power it's got your Normal microphone and headset connection. It also has a share button right in the middle. Now i gotta say something about the share button. The original power button on the xbox controller would do most of what the share button. Does i not a big fan of the share button on on the system in particular because it really doesn't do much that we couldn't have done anyway and there isn't really any type of twitch or facebook or streaming suite of any kind that i can find inside of the xbox to help streamer sort of share stuff. Anyway you can share to your timeline and that kind of thing but not really necessarily more quickly that button press also showed me that the time for recording for the length of videos is not very long. I think it was three minutes for ten. Adp that's pretty short. And i don't know if that as is actually extended somewhere else. I did go into the configuration settings and adjust that but it wasn't necessarily entirely happy with how that all sort of ended up a rolling out the controller itself. You have the basic standard controller the signal this works with all the xboxes and has what i consider to be one of the better batteries that you can actually find. Controller lasts a long time and well sorry. I didn't mean batteries. But i meant you can put your own batteries in there. It's got the hibernation that lasts longer than almost any controller now hibernation that microsoft uses that allows the controller to go into a low power mode allows for your batteries to last longer. I apologize so you do have what i consider to be one of the better input devices like the triggers. And i know we've got some competition out there with haptic triggers. That kind of stuff. It'll be interesting to see how those work. But overall i liked this controller of been a huge fan and technically. This is sort of exactly what. I wanted from their controller. Other than voice input. Which i've talked about at different times now when you look at this you've got your control you've got your system you've got to set up you plug it in and he start playing your games. Your store works pretty much. The exact same way as everything else and what you have with. The xbox series x is and the s in a slightly lesser way but the s also has the envy improvements. What you get is a system. That once again is sort of muted in. Its presentation of the improvements. They're there but they're not instantly noticeable yet. Open up the os and you're like. Hey this looks the same. You open up a couple options you like. Hey this looks the same. And then you load a fucking game. And you're like this is definitely not the same so you really do have to start experiencing the titles. The yoga's some others legion. Those kind of things within the ray tracing start seeing some stuff and be like. Oh i get it and i know that we all have differences and what we want. There are people out there that have no issues with thirty. Fps they want all the trimmings on some games they want him super high resolution super high amounts of effects. They don't mind the fps for instance. In let's say yuccas is turn based but then they wanna play their quake or something like that as a super high resolution as are super high frame rate. I think what we're getting with the series x is that ability to choose between all those and microsoft's making it pretty easy at least so far to identify how to do that or ninety nine. We're going to talk a little bit about price. Four hundred ninety nine dollars for this to ninety nine for the series s and this is not a review of the series s. I just wanna give you some prices in there somewhere. Is your ex as well as your original for ninety nine is a lot to ask somebody when you're not really offering some kind of brand new number of exclusives i don't think is actually and this is just me being honest i don't think anybody's Giving a high number of i guess. Ip's that our brand new that. I'm really excited for the first year. Maybe no neither. Neither competitor is but what we're getting is backwards compatibility and game pass. Xbox is going the way of value to what they own and have and making sure backwards. Compatibility is not just. There is improved in in automatic ways. For instance of freesync that might work for your xbox original game for instance. Hdr automatic for your prior games. That's a big deal and something that we're not seeing other people do. That's very cool about the series x four ninety nine. That's a lot of money. Then when you look at their pricing structure they also have a pay as you go kind of system where you can use them. Use their credit and you can get one for. I believe thirty. Four ninety nine which will also include game pass. I'll say that unless you're a really high end gamer if you haven't x. Right now that's probably okay because this system is offering improvements the x. Already offer some improvements for backwards compatibility and we can see how the first line and i wave of hardware actually goes out. We've seen red brings. But i've i've seen no hardware issues with this at all. It's been in fact. Phenomenally robust other than the fingerprint attack. But i think four ninety nine is a big ask from a normal game if your game. That wants the newest and the best. This thing is so many orders of magnitude more powerful than the prior systems. It's pretty mind boggling. Especially when you just take into account the gpu and the cpu and the ram. But now you're taking into account your ability to ray tracing and the ability to have that s in there and just move stuff lickety-split and improve every single game in some way automatically which sometimes it feels like even on a pc. You won't get that. Because maybe you'll put a video card in but it cpu bottlenecked or its hardware dr bottleneck and you need new hard-drive four ninety nine a big ask. It's probably a wait for a little while for four ninety nine unless you can do one of the payment plans. Or you're a premier gamer. You need the best of the. This is for sure it but it's a large amount of money in a certain economy. Where maybe that's not really necessarily what you need because these systems offer the same thing as you will get with their prior systems just way way better

"The problem was that years went by and the company had nothing to show off for it. Remember, they made the announcement in 1998, and it wasn't until 2000 won three years after that initial announcement. That representatives attended the PM a show and demonstrated the fest one the following September, the company had to stop operations when a majority stakeholder pulled funding due to issues the company was facing with European environmental standards agencies. As it turned out, the S one was never capable of working with any 35 millimeter camera. It only worked with about half a dozen. Cannon or Nikon cameras, and then it was not compatible with the others. But the company had hopes of making other systems that would have increased compatibility. Itjust never was to be. In the meantime, digital SLR cameras have become more attainable. And that largely negated the market for a digital adapter incapable of taking full advantage of the cameras features so In other words, they took too long to bring their their device to market. They had announced it and they got some interest early on, But by the time they were getting ready to have something to come to market, the the alternatives were more attractive and easier to get so Bad timing. One gadget I do have to talk about was supposed to come out from Polaroid several years ago, and I'll need to do a full episode about Polaroid at some point, because that's another fascinating company story. But let me give you the super short version of this particular tail in 2011. Polaroid was trying to mount a late innings comeback. The company had been And pretty rough shape twice over the last decade or so. But Teo understand where they came from. In 1932 Edwin Herbert Land who was the inventor of instant photography, partnered with a guy named George Wheel right to create the land, Wheelwright Laboratories and in 1937, that company would become Polaroid. And for decades, the company was known as an innovator and popularized photography. It was the was the company that brought photography to the average person and, of course, their work inspired a song. Obviously probably are all thinking about is in that classic line and hey ya, in which we're told to shake it like a Polaroid picture, by the way, shaking instead, film does not make it develop any faster, so You can shake it like a Polaroid picture. It's just not going to make the picture develop any faster. That might get you some some appreciative looks on dance floor anyway. One thing Polaroid was a little late on was adopting digital camera technology. They were sticking with film for the most part, and as a result, they were starting to fall behind in the market. That might be one of the big reasons the company found itself in financial trouble toward the end of the 19 nineties in 2001, Polaroid would file for bankruptcy protection and would stay in production until 2006 Then its parent company would have to file for bankruptcy protection in 2008, so there were stretches of years during those times when Polaroid wasn't making any products at all, there were no new Polaroid cameras coming out are being manufactured. Instead, the name Polaroid really only existed as a brand name, something that could be licensed flash forward to 2011 right, so the company is trying to re establish itself. It's trying to make this big comeback. And it had secured Booth space at CS 2011. I was actually there that year, and in fact I visited their booth that year, and they had something Interesting on display. It was a digital camera in the form factor of sunglasses, and it was a product linked to Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga had joined a Polaroid in 2010 as a creative director of specialty products. Of which these glasses were an example. And the glasses included not on Ly a camera lens but also a pair of LCD screens inside the glasses so you could see the pictures, he snapped. And there was an ear piece on the glasses that had a USB drive attached to it that served as the storage device for the glasses so you could store a certain number of images on them. They're supposed to come out during the holiday season in 2011, but they didn't. In fact, they never came out. Though several online retailers had pages set of sight for preorders. Eventually, Lady Gaga would leave Polaroid and no telling if it was because someone tried to poker face pop pop a poker face. They plan to make luxury smart phones and their first such device was called the touring phone. Originally it was meant to be a secure communications device. And if you were to send and receive messages on a couple of these touring bones You would be certain that all communications were safe because they were using into end encryption on the devices, which would theoretically make it impossible for a snoop to see what you were sending back and forth. They and if they intercepted anything, it would be meaningless gibberish. Now. Originally, the company wanted to use Android as their operating system of choice for the phone, but when they were eventually able to ship a working model several months after the originally planned ship date The operating system was sailfish, which was a little known Linux based operating system for smartphones, and when they shipped these, it wasn't really the customers. They mostly sent them to reviewers. The actual touring phone was supposed to be able to withstand such treatment is supposed be water resistant, but it turned out the review. Models that were sent out were not built on that specific hardware specifications yet They were working with the selfish operating system and they had the the software on them. But they weren't the actual hardware handsets. And so the review model was ruined. The company kept talking about other phone models in the various design and production phases with frankly unbelievable specifications such as a 60 mega pixel camera, which is insane or hydrogen fuel cell batteries, which People have talked about, but no one's really use those for cellphones. As far as I can tell these things, concepts had names like the Turing monolith, Shock Cone and the touring phone cadenza. None of them ever came to market. People who preordered. The phone received an unfinished build of the Turing phone, which was really just meant to be a temporary solution, but it never became less temporary. The same was true for what would have been the second phone to actually make it out of the manufacturing facilities. That one was the passion Otto only a beta version of the hands that ever made it to reviewers and a few early customers who had preordered the phone. This one ran on android, not sailfish, and the security features that were so central to the original touring phone were absent in this one. In February, 2018 touring robotics industries declared bankruptcy and Finland.

What You Need to Know About the iPhone 12

"Apple held its second big virtual event of fall yesterday word announced an updated home pod smart speaker, and of course, the headliner its first five G. capable iphone. We originally expected this phone in September but production was delayed due to supply chain issues from the pandemic. Now that it's here, we turn to senior personal tech columnist Joanna Stern to tell us what we ought to know join us. Thanks for joining me. Thanks for having me. Joanne on tell us about this new iphone twelve. I think you mean four new iphone twelve's because in making things much easier for us all to understand apple released four new iphones. But they also have these slight differences. There's the new iphone twelve mini with is actually not that many but does look a lot smaller than the last few iphones we've seen. Then there's the iphone twelve and then there's the iphone twelve pro and the iphone. Pro Max you got that all. Only. Just. So what new features did we see I think that's what makes this year's upgrade pretty great is that there are lots of new features across the entire lineup and the big ones include five G. Five G. is an all of these new phones. There are new designs of all of the new phones more square edges looks a lot like the iphone five or the iphone four was very nice beautiful design some. Really happy to see that you've got camera tricks and you've got all new screens, new Oleg screens across the entire lineup plus your favorite anew charging configuration. Right? I am very excited. The design has a new magnet in the back. This is not visible, but it's below the surface and there's a magnetic coil and apple is now rolling out a new accessory line called MAG safe. You might remember the name from those old macbook. And these magnetic accessories will clip to the back of the phone and one of them is a new wireless charger. That apple says will be a lot faster than usual wireless charging, and of course, the big update here is five G. capability. Five networks are supposed to be the next generation networks and bring faster download speeds better connectivity. And we know investor sentiment has really reached a fever pitch in anticipation of this new phone, what are they and apple hoping this new phone can do for the company I think they are all thinking back to other quote unquote super cycles, and these were big leaps in iphone technologies whether it was big leaps in screen size or big leaps from three G.. To Four G. and there was a lot of excitement around these almost a decade ago and that really got people to upgrade in by new phones because the technological leaps were significant here we're seeing a little bit of that, but it's certainly not the leap I. think that investors or even apple thinks it is especially in five G. I've tested a lot of. Five g phones and they can be very fast but they can be pretty fast when you're in specific areas and when you're on your phone, you don't really feel those speeds. Of course, what the investors and apple are hoping is that the speeds unlock newt sorts of innovations, new types of APPs new types of technologies that run on top of it we saw. This with four G. Four G. unlocked a whole new generation of APPs things from Uber to instagram our phones could load these things faster. Now, our phones are pretty much fast enough. What are we going to do with this faster speed? That's the big question yeah, and we heard over and over again during yesterday's presentation that quote five G. Just got real you've quite. A bit of reporting on five G. Networks I wonder what's your take is five really real now for smartphone users five G. Israel and you can get it but you have to be in a very specific set of circumstances to get it. You need to have the right carrier you need to be in the right location in verizon sense you actually need to. Be Outside standing near a opole. So it is real but is not going to be very real for most users right now. So it sounds like there's a bit of a disconnect between proponents of five G. and consumers. How are we expecting to see apple and their carrier partners trying to close that gap? A Lotta this is about future proofing you have A. Five G. Phone now, and these networks start to get better and they start to get better pretty rapidly. I have to say I have seen a substantial increase in the last year last summer I had to journey to different parts of the US to get five G.. Now, I can just go to a different section of the city or a different section of. My neighborhood to try to test out five G.. So it is getting better the speeds are getting better but there are a lot of technical hurdles and there are a lot of glitches frankly, I mean, there are times when I testify g and the same exact spot and I could get blazing fast speeds, one minute, and then another minute just sort of four speeds. Are Joining as our senior personal columnist. The big question is, should people upgrade to this phone or should they wait my advice is to wait for my review but if you're looking preorder, my first piece of advice is do not upgrade just for five G. that's not a reason to upgrade. But what's really nice about what apple was there was a whole other big feature set that you get here that isn't just tied to five. G. You get those nicer designs you get that nicer screen you get that more compact form factor. If you want to get that many device loads of new camera tricks many that I don't frankly understand and need to even dig into because the presentation was so packed with all that information. So don't just go by for five G. go by for the big package and what it all means together. All right anything else that jumped out. At you about yesterday's event. Yes. Interestingly, they started the event talking about the product that we never remember that apple makes, which is the home pod, a new home pod mini, and this is a really compelling little product. It is a smart speaker from Apple Ninety nine dollars. Obviously, they're to compete against the Amazon and the Google Minis of the world lots of features that others have had before it's lagging in music support. No. spotify and Pandora's not going to be there for a couple of months but seemed like a compelling holiday gift by

Is this the end of the Nintendo Switch?

Is this the end of the Nintendo Switch?

"Some analysts believe this is at the end of the road for Nintendo consoles for the foreseeable future. Some analysts believe there will not be a next. Nintendo console because Nintendo is going to be adopting apple's iphone model and just iterating on the switch. Released, releasing new versions, more powerful versions, every few years or so First of all, how does that idea strike you, Sam? Well I mean it strikes me as very unoriginal because Nintendo has done that for decades at a time before they had like twenty years of Gameboy like we've we've experienced this and the major just saying that they're going to do this for another ten or twenty years is not any different than the Nintendo, the Super Nintendo and then intendo sixty four like we've seen iterations on hardware but I get what's happening with this being like maybe those can become a lot shorter periods between them and maybe you know there's more of A. This maybe more of an. Acceptance on the audiences behalf of that type of iteration now. But I don't think it's that brave prediction. I think having an all in one console is pretty awesome and I would buy them over and over again. Yeah that's actually. I. Think it's Malarkey. Malarkey settled it's a family show Justin possibly even Baloney. People have been saying this. About Nintendo forever you know they they didn't kill the Gameboy line like it was the most successful biggest most successful part of Nintendo and they were willing to sort of do do away with it and shift to the DS And if they were to continue. Align. Why wouldn't they have continued the we line which was an absolute cultural phenomenon and the way that not even the Nintendo switches been able to match like the we was the biggest thing in video games for years and you know they sorta continued trading on it with the we you. Nee. That's right. The maybe they had tried and it didn't work. But like now I think this is a company that likes to march to their own drum and And the form factor of the switch I. Think it's super cool like the everyone always talks about its hand-held and a television console, but it's doing other clever stuff with a detachable controllers and all of that. But. That doesn't strike me as like a form factor that's GonNa last for decades and just be thing into perpetuity like now I think they're gonNA they're gonNA, continue innovating, and so to blow our socks off again down the line. Seth. What do you think about this Malarkey Slash Baloney? I think it's Malarkey and Bologna as well. I don't think Nintendo just Maloney. loaded. I think yeah. I. Think they're going to the next whatever the nintendo thing is going to be something that we are completely surprised by and for six months leading up to it we're going to say this is the biggest mistake and why did they make console? That's just a severe with made of glass and then we'll get it the game came sphere. Yeah and we'll get it. It'll be amazing and like make all our Nintendo genes come true I think that. Nintendo just doesn't. There like this old monolithic company they're not just going to. It rate on this they like to just which is ironic but they liked change it up every time. So I think I don't think that we're GONNA. See you know switch X. Years I do think we're getting a switch pro. Super Real but I don't think that necessarily heralds like Oh. Yes. Now, this is what the vision of Nintendo hardware like into the future it's not it's not the same as iphone in my view I think following the switch pro will get a proper generational a transformation. Playstation and xbox. Different mental difference in this type. I think Borba's typing or we can hear you typing. There's a fundamental difference in the switch. On the business side, which is that they don't have another console out they always have to at once sometimes three at once, and then also the it's it's for the first time ever the reason for that is that it's portable and a console at once. I don't know why they would have. A very, very great. What's up? So you you cut out there for a second. You said, I don't know why they would ever. I don't know why they'd ever stray away from that. Now, the because they're hand held business is so important to them. everybody else's trying handhelds works for phones, but for handheld consoles like they have on and they still need to deliver that experience just forever. So I don't know why like as things processors get smaller and more efficient every year why you know the we wouldn't be plugging a hand held to our TV's ever like that's that that seems like something that should stay around I don't know why would.

A Look At The new Samsung Tablet

"Well, let's keep. Let's keep the Samsung train rolling and If there's one device form factor that we're not skeptical about that, we actually wish we saw more of the got to play with more often that would be tablets. And the Galaxy Tab get. Samsung. Galaxy Tab seven plus came out and had you had some time with it and you wrote a pretty good review for over android central. Tell me tell me all about the galaxy. Tab. Seven pluses. Is it a good tablet? IS WORTH PEOPLE'S MONEY? Is that the future of tablets? So the this one, I'm a bit less bullish on that I, am with the with the full to. It is a fantastic tablet. So I guess we'll quickly run through some of the some of the features with it. I'M GONNA try not to hit my microphone Basically, you've got most of the same specs as some of Samsung's recent phones you've got like a snapdragon eight, sixty, five plus. Sixty eight gigs of Ram twenty gigs of storage, etc.. The point is basically it's just this very, very powerful tablet. You've got a twelve and a half inch one twenty hertz screen? and. The screen just looks gorgeous. It's it's one of the best screens of a any device of used in recent memory the the trouble of course, because it's an android tablet it, it starts to come when you need apps. So If you're just using tablet for media streaming, maybe you know Netflix Youtube, etc. It's it's totally fine. It's got each Dr Support. It's it's quite hd display. It's GonNa Look Gorgeous for everything you watch on it but I do a lot of creative from a video editing to photo editing and audio production and none of that with the exception of photo editing is really great on an android tablet. There's no full version of photoshop like get on an IPAD. At even Dobie Premier Rush, which is available on Android, and it's sort of the answer to android users saying I wish I had luma fusion like the IPAD premiere Russia's a great option but I wasn't able to download that on the tablet seven plus it's just it doesn't show up on the play store so. There's there's a lot of frustration in in terms of I guess sort of pro grade media creation APPs and that that's sort of the thing that I would want this four when you've got this amazing screen and of the tools like the SPN and the really nice keyboard accessory But on the bright side, what I, what I talked a lot about my review is that it has this decks interface where you enable it and it basically turns the tablet into a laptop style interface. You get you get flu windows that you can pin to each side of the screen You get a task for all the stuff that makes it feel like a chromebook or any laptop and the main advantage there is that it lets you sort of run because you can run window to APPS. You can run the phone versions of certain APPs that aren't optimized for giant screen and so things like instagram work a lot better index than they do on a regular tablet view where base fills the entire screen with one giant instagram APP decks really really helps sort of fixed at least the casual the casual ended up issue there so that that's been a big help I think. As. Far as whether or not it's worth I. mean this is this is an eight, hundred, fifty dollars tablet that if you want the keyboard I think you really need the keyboard. It's GONNA cost another two thirty plus you know if you want to get more storage or get five G. support, that's all gonNa cost even more of course. So it becomes this thousand plus dollar tablet that it's it's. Difficult to recommend, I would say for most people. I mean, those numbers are close to laptop numbers right for like I mean I mean for powerful laptop numbers I mean you can get a much. You can get an affordable laptop and you can even get affordable convertible laptop that also functions as a tablet for under a thousand dollars. So yeah, I could see where it gets price prohibitive. Absolutely. I mean I think if you had more of those apps like Photoshop and premier premiere rush it would be a lot easier to recommend just because then if you if you just prefer a tablet over a laptop this is a great option but Without, those apps I mean really what this is to me is a great media streaming device and it's a great gaming device, but you don't have to spend eleven hundred plus dollars to get those sorts of things in in other veterans. So it's just a hard sell for for I think most types of users. At the same time, it's nice that there are options in that range were for the few people who are willing to spend like I think that that kind of that reminds me of the conversation around like the Pixel Book and the Higher End Chrome Os laptops slot like the Pixel book you know where there are thousand dollars plus and the majority of people are GonNa look at that and be like why I spend a thousand dollars on a web browser or whatever everybody says about Chrome Os. But then there there is always that particular few that they're like, no, you know what my work like. Operate. In Chrome Os and I want the best damn device to run CHROMA less and so I'm willing to drop a thousand dollars on it and I. I could see someone out there appreciating that there's a thousand dollars tablet that you know that is like the best thousand dollar android tablet. But yeah by a large, that's probably not most people and especially considering the fact that tablets and android have really not been a very magical ca category combination. You know not in the same way that IPAD and I o S. And iphone have been you know apple has made a very successful business out of its tablet side of things and debris you'll. I have to wonder how much of that and I'm speaking completely from a position of ignorance here. But how much of that is a is a difference in position between apple and Google in terms of a development developers resource or incentive. You know you've got imagine apple went to adobe and made incentivize them to create a full version of punishment. That works may IPAD is Google. Just not doing that t to adobe right they are. Are they being the typical kind of Google unapproachable and not re proactively reaching out to the companies of the APPS that they need in order to make these things make these things become a viable product line they just saying we'll put you know we'll support the operating system. We'll let the OEM's make make the devices and hope that people put good apps on it but could google, get more proactive in terms of soliciting those kind of APPs I think they could. Yeah I mean it's it's this sort of endless circle right because right now Basically you know it's it's not worth it from Google's perspective to to you know sort of incentivize companies to make apps because people don't buy android tablets but people don't buy android tablets because Google doesn't make anybody make good injury jobs. So I really you know. You solve that but. I do think if if you're married to the idea of an android tablet, if you just I mean I love android. On, a phone at least if you really just want android on a tablet, this is easily the best tablet. There is I think from a hardware perspective. This is as Nice if not nicer to me at least than any I have ever used. So there's definitely a lot compelling. Plus the fact that it even though it's expensive, it is a little bit cheaper than an ipad Pro twelve point nine and it comes with the SPN in the box. So you get a bit of a Freebie there So I mean if I guess if your needs don't go beyond what android tablet APP ecosystem can offer your this is this is a great pickup I just such. Eleven hundred bucks is a lot to ask for. So you. So you just touched a question from the chat room. So the pen comes with it right? The pen, but the keyboard is an add on for a couple couple. Hundred Bucks, right Yeah, that'll be two thirty with the keyboard you get obviously the keyboard itself which comes with a track that and then also comes with a back cover that I think is really really handy even if you even if you don't need the keyboard you just WanNa use this as a media device. The back cover is magnetized and it it gives you this almost three sixty hinge. So you can. You can prop up the tablet at basically any angle it's very rigid. I really liked the hinge a lot I don't know if they actually sell that separately without the keyboards for people that don't plan on typing, but it's it's like I said, I think the keyboard and the back cover sort of bundle is is really a must have for for the tablet if you really want to get the most out of it and not just I guess without it, you're basically just using it as a note taking device, which is great. But for eight hundred, Fifty Bucks, you might as well go the extra mile and and get the the other accessories that make it more usable. Even more money. Talks luck. Yeah. That's right there if if Samsung's doing its job, right, then that would be the no brainer decision of anyone thinking about buying one of these. But I guess the question is, do they sell enough of them for be worth it and? Simply always surprises me as far as that's concerned but they might not sell enough from the outside looking in, but they obviously selling up because it keeps making them

Taking a closer look at the Surface Duo

Taking a closer look at the Surface Duo

"You have reviewed the surface duo, the Microsoft surface duo, and before we really get into it like this hardware season in particular I feel like we've gone from like Oh, we've got weird experimental form factors to we've got foreign factors that people are trying to make real. What do you think of this idea that we're finally moving away from just flat glass slabs I think it's an interesting dichotomy because on the one hand, we've got Samsung and Microsoft trying late duo screen and folding screens and with the wing. Holy. Is Getting Weird and then love the weird I welcome it. But on the other hand, we've also got the candy. Bar. That traditional smartphone look is really just gone to a point where it's so almost boring, but it's good. That and it's so the formulas or find that Google was able to pixel for a and actually that's what I liked more. But the place for like a surface duo something like that, right? It's not like people haven't tried to make dual screens. Happen is just like the excitement now is palpable. It's people want something like this now where they might not have as much before. Yeah, I think that's like the people want and whether or not there's a market for it is a big question. So the thing that I struggle with is, are they doing this because they can you know the terrific park quote scientists? Or they doing it because they have a genuine vision they're just doing it to like have something that feels new because the the the market is stagnating a little bit and there's like a you know just everything is a candy bar. Now actually we have a clip we'd had Panos Panay service up on the verge cast a while ago when they were first like trotting around showing everybody I'm Andrew can you play that clip from pantry talks about the category of this thing I feel like phone is such a limiting word you know, and then you say well smartphone I don't even know what that. Means and then fablet I'm not sure what that is but everything hasn't identifying factor to it. Even when we started surface people are like so it's a tablet on my tablet just not tablet to surface. I, don't know what to say and you want to categorize it and put it there I. Think if you're going to create a new category, you're going to try and change things push push things forward. The minute you put you put in a box I think you're law so I've been pretty resistant to that just to not end up there I I'm pretty sure pence knows what a fab line is. I don't think he's too lost. When someone says, it's a tablet no I in my review to like I immediately was like what is the surface duo? It's not a phone. It's just not good as a phone, not a phone. It's also not really a tablet in fact, that's a tablet I. think it Kinda Sucks. It's just something trying to be a lot of things and hearing that Panos description of it now makes a lot of sense. This duo seems to be something that doesn't really know what it is and doesn't know what it wants to be, but it's still trying to be a lot of things anyway

Back-to-school season kicks off this week, but laptops are sold out

"Looking at the challenges of distance learning as the pandemic rolls on, and this week is kind of the official back to school kickoff for families and school districts getting ready for school has meant scrambling to find laptops kids to use at home, and there is a major shortage of low-cost laptops like chromebooks. It's a combination of the trade war with China and supply chains that have been disrupted by the pandemic but with millions of students starting school without the tech, they need to learn at home an education system that was already unequal is even more. So Jay Ganders, an analyst at Forrester. Here's for now it has been a case of delays especially for educational institutions right who have been told in some cases that they were going to receive models. And we're talking about thousands of laptops. By the beginning of the school at home period, and now they're saying, well, you may not get these until later in the school year and that's very problematic if the school district is expecting to supply the laptops to their students because then you're kind of stuck with what you have at home and not all students can afford or have access to a computer, and so when do we think this shortage might end if at all wonders? Well, what will happen next year you know is, is it? Going to go back and return to normal levels. So I think there's GonNa be trouble on the horizon as the companies that produce this try to reevaluate their Chinese supply chain can they relocate to other places or will there be new administration? For example, that makes that easier figuring out what they expect for demand what the budgets look like for schools there's so many variables at play and I would just say much like with toilet paper, right it was took some time to sort out the supply chain. A much more complicated supply chain well, and I want to get back to this idea of future demand because if we really do see a scenario where education changes in the long term. Then, all of a sudden schools become an even bigger market for portable devices. Right? Then they have been before. I. Think that's right. I mean I think The the proliferation of these devices on an individual basis for every child is not universal. We have a lot of classrooms where students actually share devices, which makes sense but when you have to send them home with the child, then that becomes a larger market. A. Lot depends on the course of the pandemic and how safety goes and how the numbers look, and of course, I'm not an epidemiologist. So I won't even try to figure that out. But let's say if we're persisting in a high state of pandemic. It means that there would be increased demand even into next year for new laptops because the schools simply don't have individual devices for every student, we've sort of honed in on laptops for the purposes of this conversation. If we start to see sort of like permanent remote become a reality will other form factors all in one PC's or just even desktops start to make a return. I think they could. Part of the issue though is that our houses have been filled with lots of remote people, right? So maybe parents. Maybe. Grandparents others simply a surplus of people in the household, and that means that a laptop has the advantage of flexibility being able to move to a different room I. Know a lot of the business meetings I have. You'll see someone's bed at background because they've been sort of banished to a bedroom. And the other problem here is that schools aren't going to be providing something like a desktop, right they need to provide something that's all in one very reportable and very easy. To use. Getting back to this idea of the inequality and that you know lower income students who can't afford a more expensive last because that might be available are being left out. What are the other devices if any are are filling the void? SMARTPHONES can fill part of the GAP certainly in Asia, we find a lot going on in this space where Chinese school children will get certain lessons over mobile. You can certainly do a zoom meeting over a mobile phone so you could participate in the classroom creation of content however, as opposed to consumption is going to be more challenging on a phone. There are schools that use tablets particularly ipads, but they will then require in cases for older kids an external keyboard and a stand, and that sort of thing. So the economics are not that easy. The bottom line is I think. For children who have less income in their families. The schools need to try to equip them with everything that they need on a turnkey basis.

Because the other announcement from yesterday was the revival if you will of the ipad mini with the fifth generation either. Meaning it's been four years. I think since the I put Meany four originally came out again, this is a sensually the air. But in a smaller form factor. It's got the twelve bionic supports the apple pencil got a true tone this play and it starts at three nine thousand nine. But this is the meaning that, you know, very small very compact and you can use the apple pencil with it. And in fact, I thought he was quite curious and quite telling of the apples intentions here. They are promoting the app mini as the most portable and lightweight digital not book that you can have or notepad rather. And the team cook announced this product without any text just a photo of team writing the famous. Hello. You know, the low message with the classic apple fund on the night between using apple pencil. Yeah. The Hello message that everybody apples trained on extensively. At apple university calligraphy. Maybe they do. And maybe I'm curious about the ipad mini. Because of this like what it is like to use an apple pencil on a device that small like, I'm kind of I am like a little bit curious of especially because it is wild to think of the power that this. Tiny little tablet hasn't now. So like the toll by owning chip is the same chip that's in the current iphones. It's not the same chip. That's in the current ipad pros. That's the twelve ax. Right. It's like a little bit more powerful. But that twelve I'm curious if you guys seem what the ram is three gigabytes of ram to do. You know, does anybody know that? Yeah. I haven't seen it. We don't know. Yeah. I haven't seen that benchmarked yet. But like, I'm I'm really curious to to play around. I did price one up, and what I would want would cost me nine hundred pounds, which is like just going to make that decision without going to a store because that's really expensive from have many. Right. Plus, you know, say galaxy fall. Are get two ipad minis and tape them together. The same thing. Why don't I just do that seems like a better way to do things? So yeah, it's very curious. Very curious little product yesterday. I briefly considered. Shoot. I got an ipad me, and the context was I have two ipads. My main work ipad is the twelve point shepherd pro and then in the Semper. I bought the eleven inch, hyper about the very base model just to us as a media consumption device and for like minutae consider is the mini gonna be better than than the app. That's going to be more portable. It's going to be lighter. But then I thought about it. And I was like, Nah, I just like the design and the form factor of the eleven CHAI, but so much I don't wanna go back to touch idea, and you know, the Basil's even though the epic mini. I think the lightness and the size would be better for what I'm using it like reading books. For example, would be nicer, and even what she YouTube via for example. I think it would be nicer. I thought the abbot pro look so much better like the industrial designer just preferred the weather looks with rounded, edges and face idea..

"Ooh. Noah welcome to the PC perspective podcast this episode five hundred thirty being recorded on January thirty two thousand nineteen. I am your host Sebastian peak. Germy Hallstrom, I'm Josh walrus. I already blew it with the switching sorry, Jim. And I'm sick today. So I'm just a screen when when you see the inanimate screen. That's that's me. The gym is actually the name of the computer program that runs our podcast operation. Yeah. It's really piece of shit. The semi-in telling auto switcher emphasis on the semi. Yeah. So we're hoarding live. Once again, we were sick last week collectively mostly Jim who has been near death. As I understand it. And it's still not ready to show his face the world. But we're back we're live. And if you want to find out when we are live. You can join our little spam lists all we do is send out an Email when we go live for special events podcast sort of thing. So sign up there, if you wanna know, but we have a lot to get because we we're not here last week, we were semi here. But it was a total technical thing that we're not even getting into. So we're going to cover a lot kind of some highlights as far as news goes. But we have quite a few reviews. We're on a torrid pace in twenty nineteen with reviews. It's a little scary. The only way to keep you warm down there. I know. I mean everytime. I start to feel cold. I just review something as fast as I can. I think it's the lights from my light box that warm me at least they make me feel warm anyhow getting ready with just enough as side thing, you tasty PC would probably get along. Really? Well, because apparently she has like. Thirty eight cases lining her walls of garage. I I have her be there. But I actually I got smart and before it got really cold I lined my attic with them. Now have additional insulation above the ceiling which holds the heat down because you know, heat rises and. In computer, enclosure boxes, keep that he in my living room. Yeah. 'cause you got like cooler master are fifty two type in slaying. Yes. Yeah. Anyway, moving on spouse. Applies we have not one but two power spy reviews in as many weeks and the first one is a sea, sonic. This is the focus s g x six fifty. And this one threw me a little bit because it's an s g x branding of an S F X L power supply there two different flavors of this power supply four hundred fifty and six hundred fifty watts. The nice thing about SF X L. If you're not familiar is. This is the small form factor. Like maniacs. Very like, it's like half the size of a standard power supply. But the L variant is a little bit longer and it holds a full hundred twenty millimeter fan. So this has a nice fluid dynamic bearing fan the one complain about. These are spies basically is that the small. Fans can kind of noisy. This takes care of that. If you have space for it, anyhow, the I won't get into the nitty gritty of the review you can read lease excellent review on the site. But essentially, he came away impressed with the only thing he found about it that didn't like is actually one thing that I like, so it really depends on your point of view here. He did not like that the included is a full modular. Power spy, included, flat. Ribbon cables are very short. So. I like that. I'm the guy who bought a SilverStone FX power supply for years ago and bought their short cable kit. So this one for one hundred bucks for the four fifty comes with the kit, which is like twenty five dollars. So it's kind of like an all in one thing if you're building a very small enclosure and don't have a lot of space for cables or when trying to make it look neat. Plus, you can always use cable extensions. But anyhow read the review, it got a gold award from Lee and speaking of Lii and power supplies. He just put up a power supply review from cooler master. This is the M W E gold seven hundred fifty watt full modular power supply. And there is a non modular version of this. So that is the differentiator and. Once again, really didn't have any complaints about this power supply it performed admirably. The only issue he really had about this. When the got him less excited. It was the pricing relative to the market this one is hundred dollars. So if you're looking at gold rated modular power supplies, these days seven hundred fifty watts eighty plus gold for one hundred dollars one of those things where I think if you can find this one on sale, it's solid. His all his numbers. News output at forty five c you know, good voltage regulation that sort of thing. Good power supply. Just not like the most exciting pricing. So that was kind of the takeaway there. But once again the full review at PC dot com with all those lovely charts. And. Technical details and photos, let's move to a couple of Jim reviews. Jim has been busy testing storage. And we all know that we lost somebody very near and dear to us in the recent past and Allen is no longer with us. I mean, he's alive. Don't get me wrong. He's alive and kicking. But we have you know storage to cover. There's a lot of storage happening is way nineteen we're looking at the we don't have anything yet. But we're looking at the possibility of gen four stuff coming down the road. We saw that FIS on controller it's ES. But right now, we do have stuff, and this is actually something from CAS the WD black s n seven fifty and that is important because we already had a WD black and VM SSD on the market. This is the black s seven fifty. So if you're searching for this or looking for information about this online you have to use that name. But this is a very performance. NVSS de that comes in a couple of different flavors. One is just like your your stock and VM SSD. And then the higher end skew comes with an e k water blocks heat sink. For longer sustained rights, and they were they talked to us about thermals, and how that impacts performance over a longer durations. But the interesting thing about this one is they're getting a lot higher performance, especially on the right side than they were previously. We're talking nearly three thousand megabytes per second. All the way up through the two terabyte model, actually the one terabyte the sweet spot. That's what Jim tested where he was getting. This is rated for three thousand megabytes per second rights, quintile, reads, thirty four seventy and this is using that the the sixty four layer three triple earlier cell. Nand and another interesting thing about this all mentioned this before we go over some of the this is like an initial review some basic performance benchmarks community of what the striving to do this has a gaming mode. So in the software toolbox that this comes with you can turn on the gaming mode, which actually completely disables any power savings leaving it. Basically, forcing it

"While you do that. So I do want to want to ask you do you health fast? You think this is going to be deployed, do you think this is going to be a slow deployment of five G, or do you think because how the mobile phone manufacturers are kind of speeding up this? I think Samsung will be the first one on Verizon's network five G, and that'll probably start start off the the cascade of other OEM Cerna do this. Do you think it'll be a quick adoption rate, or do you think this is going to be slow? I think it's going to be in those areas that today have LT. I think that's how it's going to go interesting. So this is interesting. This is very different. It's sixty down which is twice as fast as the T mobile connection. It's only nine up which is less than the twelve up got on T mobile interesting. The ping is double what it was on T mobile. It's thirty milliseconds versus fifteen which is worse. Right. Yeah. You want to lower allow you want very low. Yeah. But as far as like using a laptop and you're browsing the web and doing Email, and whatever it's good. Yeah. It's fine. I don't use it this way. Obviously when I'm home. I'll just us. Yeah. I mean, I like having the capability. Of being able to do it. Yes. Yes. Something I want to talk to you about before you start running out of time the new pixel three light information is leaked regarding this. And you wrote an article on dot com about this. And you went with. This is a cheaper version of the pixel three. Yes. So it's a plastic body. It looks like it's identical form factor. I simplistic will be fine for wireless charging, so it'd probably support that. But I'm not sure about that same size battery. Same screen same camera on the back, which is the big deal. It is a mid level processor. I think it's a Snapdragon six seventy for gigs ram thirty. Yeah. Thirty two gigs of storage, which is going to be a lot of people. It's designed to be less expensive. It's supposedly shipping right after Google, which is probably in may. So it's not or anything like that. But it is something they're going to ship midyear. I mean, I, you know, like apple Gogel, obviously needs to have lower price phones. And I would like to see them lower the price of their existing funds. But this is interesting to me plastic doesn't bother me. The camera quality is excellent. So that's of interest. It's the smaller phone doesn't have a notch. Expandable storage would have made a big difference for the cameras one twelve. It's not the same camera in the in the other one, right? What is it is? Camera. That's interesting. So do we have a price idea? No. It is wild how expensive they've gotten these phones. I mean, really. The higher end ten s ten x which will be the five G version that is looking anywhere between fourteen hundred sixteen hundred dollars. I'm sorry. But I know I know what is going on here. Fourteen hundred dollars, by the way, the scam. Here is that it's a monthly payments..

"Grab a pen and start doing things on the screen. And this kind of form factor is pretty much where you have to go with all in wants to make it work both ways. And I I know I've seen concepts in the past of like, well, this is what apple could do with a touch. I MAC while they haven't done it. And this is another example of one of those products that can be used in a traditional way or can be used with a stylus or your fingertip. And obviously these argued towards that content creator side, but you know, that's it's a pretty big market. And it. If that display looks really good. I did not get a chance to see this at this late looks good that it's pretty compelling product. If you're going side by side with another on one like an I Mak, which is you know, it's just a display up on a stand. It happens to have the computer behind it. So. I'll be really curious to see what the I I wanna see somebody measure this when it finally comes out. But it, you know, they're working with Dolby vision. Eight CR not too deep. I don't think we had the color gamut. Oh know now it's up here. Now one hundred percent RGB with Dolby vision. They didn't have too much information on the color gamma or the brightness of the screen over taking a look at it. "I don't know. That's actually a good question will be super weird if they would just like all you remember that I pad which is just now more expensive. We didn't do anything to. Yeah. What what would they add? I guess the obvious to me is that can laminate the screen, but that's I don't know. I don't think I agree that that price point is gonna go up. I think maybe a year ago. I would have thought that it would. But now, I think apple sort of feels the pressure of this sort of thing, and like the whole idea this ipad is to make a Chee the cheapest way into education, and I feel like the nine point seven inch form factor is better for that than the smaller mini. Maybe the price would be the same. Or maybe the many would be less, but I don't I think that three twenty on a really sweet spot and not sure they want us with that. There was a follow up story in January. Showing purported unreleased case for some specs that it was pallid line a nine which was in the twenty seven I pads and the iphone six s seem super strange, and it also showed like a case, which macrumors cold it rose gold, and I don't know if it's rose gold looks a little bit more like the the regular gold now which sits in the middle. But if that is rose yelled than this isn't going to be released because apple don't make rose gold anymore. They're not going to introduce new rose gold product that make rose gold products anymore. They just do like Silva space, gray and gold and new goal his warm gold. So I don't know. Yeah. That may just be a transition deal or someone thinks it's rose gold, and it's not or I don't think that's a huge. If I'm saying like, if it is specifically said to be rose gold than I don't think this specific one that was seen right here will ever exist. Yeah. Anybody anybody tried to translate those little? Dots on the left side of the case. If the macrumors the inside of the of the aluminium case, there's a some don's looks like braille. Language. It's probably not. I mean, the must mean something specific shapes. Yeah. It might be something for a computer to read. Right. Like, a remote Bobi says maybe says our power is real. This is Johnny ive trolling somebody. Well, okay. Sorry. Yeah. I mean who knows this struggle the current? I've had many I think all of hits all of its market got eaten up by the three twenty nine I pad, right? It's bigger cheaper to newer faster has been support. Everything's nicer about it. And I just wonder if the many five is real what market has like does it just kind of go back to the one you buy your kids? But now for a while. Now, the nine point seven been that I think it is for our family. We bought a new nine point seven this year. Or is there a market for people who have an ipad pro, but want something smaller for reading? It's light social media type stuff. Like, I have thought about this a couple of times over there, especially with the twelve point nine ipad pro like actually tried reading a better with it the other night, and my wife like what are you doing? Like, you're gonna hurt yourself. It's so Bill the eleven inches. Federica could just by eleven inch. I've had like Federico did. But the mini is compelling..

"This is definitely a very budget friendly way of putting together a system for like a family member or just somebody who wants like a a low power quiet system. And they target, of course, like seven twenty p gaming with with the graphics of this caliber, so. It's tempting also is given the power consumption that would be really tempting to do for a media server as long as you doing sort of, you know, four K trans coding, but if you're doing audio server are just straight out, you know, sending Teini video to your to your home theater or something. I would be really tempting part to use for something like that given the relatively low power consumption for the number of cores at has this that's an area where I always wanted to see a more options with smaller form factors with AMD platforms. No, we have. Sub mini IT X for Intel. And then the course thin maniacs. And this is something where in the past like, the AM three soccer didn't really get any small form factor. Love partly because of power draw issues sort of thing, but like thirty five watts you can put this in almost any package. And this is something that you could find it a mini PC. So my my thought looking at the story initially was and I've done quite a few like many PC reviews over the years. And it's almost almost every company just has lower power Intel parts, and they definitely have that like sub ten watt, and sometimes even sub six watt platform that they can put out, but with some active cooling. Even even low speed, low noise active cooling, you could definitely put something together with one of these API us and have some some viable graphics performance as well. Tempting tempting you. This is fun. I I love keyboard reviews and Chris for coke growth is up for PC per the washing one analog keyboard review. And I was kinda curious what an analog keyboard is as you make a pain breath. Just saying like first of all I didn't get a chance to use this one yet. But. This was a I believe a crowd funded project that while not one hundred percent fleshed out yet. Apparently, there's already a second one in the works. But. It's a very interesting concept to think that you could look at a believe they're using like they're looking at a reflection of. The actual the flair tactical switches. Yeah, it's like a light source, and they look at the reflection of the light source, and which allows one of the things I thought of when I I read this was that it would give you a lot of flexibility over actuation point since you're just telling the software where to look for actuation, which you can do with the software the one thing that software really doesn't have support for right now is. Macro. Like, they're no like built in Mac OS for keep endings for various games, which I thought was a little odd. But. Apparently, he he likes elect the keyboard. The issue was with the key caps themselves. But there is an upgraded option available for those you're buying into very emerging tech here. And so there is that that early adopter tax. This is one hundred sixty dollar products. Right. And it's it works. It absolutely works. And there is that flexibility of being able to control the actual actuation. Although he he did say it's quite shallow like the actual travel. The feel of it is quite shallow experience. So if you're into that like deep key travel like mechanical experience, this is a little bit lighter than that. Sure. But and it's getting a completely missing the point here with the fact that his analog because this is a different kind. Of control for games. Like, this is this is really being marketed as a way to to have that fine analog control. Beyond like, a mouse or a a game pad. I mean as as somebody who is a keyboard nerd, even I find this a little subtle and a little fringe, which is is saying something considering my I've usually leapt at the chance to grab every new sort of switch. That's come out in the last decade. It seems like, but I I was really curious like the whole idea of you know, sort of a light in a prison and the ability to adjust the range and people are talking about swapping in on the atom X keys that are inside of this board people have actually swapped in the. Swapped in.
