Hate and Hertz rent over to Doc Prescott afterwards and thanked him for opening up with all that happened to his brother, who did take his own life and also Dak talking about his own depression during the pandemic. Hayvenhurst runs a charity for suicide prevention. And it was a neat moment after the game where even when emotions are high after a loss and the Falcons in such an embarrassing collapse that Aidan Hearse runs over and shows respect to Dak Prescott for sharing his story, so I just want to give a stock up. That was a neat moment that the cameras caught. And that the microphones caught as well. So stock up the Dak Prescott and hated nurse Drew Brees. Bad performance last night. I know you're without Michael Thomas 10. Nothin Europe 17 to 7, and then you just looked really bad. I know A lot of people were celebrating the Saints after Game one. They're still going to be a good team. And Drew Brees. If they don't get a bike and win your four playoff games now, I don't know. I don't know. Right now. I would say no stock down to your breeze for his performance on Monday night, staying with Monday night football. Remember all those people that told us I'm never watching the other fella gun, never watching the NFL again. Monday night Football last night combined for over 15 million viewers on ABC and ESPN. That was up 26% from last year's week to Monday night football broadcast that had a little over 12.2 million people. I thought people weren't watching. I thought people weren't gonna watch. You know, we've had people kill one another National Football League. You watch people beat up their wives in the National Football League. You watch people in the NFL want equality. I'm not watching. I'm not watching a bunch of B s. The NFL's a drug. We're all addicted to it. You're always going to be watching stock down to the we won't watch crowd. Lions run defense, Major stock down through two games and they played the Bears and then the Lions, who they play last week. Why can I remember who the lines played, and we saw the Packers? Aaron Jones was running wild dog. 204 yards per game. Matt Patricia, the genius That his defense has allowed 204 yards per game. Just on the ground map. Patricia Adam gaze Dan Quinn, Don't be too comfortable. You're all going to lose your jobs, and you should lose your jobs very soon. Stock down, though, to Patricia, and that lines run defense once so,.

The Real Reason NFL Ratings Are (Slightly) Down

"So Dan. Let's start the story back in June is been ten days since George Floyd was brutally murdered. To actually. Listen to you. We had this prominent NFL players put out that video about black lives matters. Behalf. Football League. This is what we the players would like to state. Leave black lives matter. And then Commissioner Roger Goodell doing what the players had requested. We the National Football League emit we wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all to speak out in peacefully protests. Read the National Football League Aleve black lives matter was their concern within the NFL at that time about the league. So openly embracing the black lives matter movement and concern that it could impact. TV ratings when the season began I think without a doubt. There was concern commissioner goodell made that video without consulting the owners many of whom in the past taken a hard line on kneeling intertwining politics, social issues and sport. We have more on the story that is dominating the National Football League the anthem protests Jerry Jones was Adam Sunday that any player that does not stand for the national. Anthem will not play Jones clarified that statement telling our Chris sentiment within the NFL that good for business is no intersection of politics and sports. Now that boat seems to have clearly have sailed not just in the NFL, but the rest is sport but I would be surprised if ratings fall, we don't begin to hear some voices from within the NFL saying we've gone too far on opening. Night of the season, the chiefs versus Texans, we saw players link arms in a moment of Solidarity Ladies and gentlemen please join us in a moment of silence dedicated to the ongoing fight or equality in our country, and we've seen a number of players putting names of victims of police brutality on their helmets. What's bend the public response to those moves? Obviously in Kansas City there was some booing. Depending on which media outlet you read it was either a lot of booing or a little booing. But there was some booing and interviewing the fans who booed it's hard to know why whether they disapproved of the message whether they disapproved adjust anything interfering with sports but there will always be that voice saying we don't want is social issues politics intersect was fort. So after week one, there were reports that NFL ratings were down though it turns out those reports weren't entirely accurate and a whole bunch of analysis followed, Dan, what was some of the commentary around those early reports were obviously in a politically charged Environment, and there are those who want to scribe lower sports ratings to the political movements that have intersected with sports. So you saw headlines and certain conservative publications woken NFL ratings down sixteen seventeen percents the doubleheader on Monday night football, the Sunday night football game, the Thursday night kickoff game those were down monstrously large over last season. Why is that to me? The answer is pretty simple. My hypothesis is when you get woke, you go broke but everybody in this environment of trump versus bite in republican versus Democrat. Every wants to interpret sports ratings through that Lens football's boring as hell, it's just not the same pattern. Used to. Say could you keep it away from football game? Now say, could you possibly do it during football game? We have some free time when really the reasons for ratings rise and fall have very little to do in my opinion with the political news of the day.

NFL reminds teams to follow sideline rules on face coverings

"The National Football League is threatening to find head coaches if they don't adhere to Corona virus rules requiring face masks on the sidelines. During the first weekend of games. Some coaches were saying not wearing coverings. We have the latest from NPR's Tom Goldman. In a Monday memo to the NFL's 32 teams. We'd executive Troy Vincent praised what he called the tireless efforts to make the season possible during the pandemic. But Vincent also warned those who defy rules unmasks everyone in team bench areas on the field except players has to wear a face covering in all times. Failure to do so, Vincent wrote, will result in accountability measures against individuals and or clubs. Those measures include finds during Sunday's nationally televised game between Dallas and the Los Angeles Rams. Ella head coach Sean McVeigh, often at his mask under his chin, while Dallas is Mike McCarthy wore his thie entire game. Tung Goldman NPR news

"So You know, I'm not really paying attention to it too much. You know, Like I said, not the best. So you know you don't have a lot of injury. You know, you hope that they could do something about it just for the safety of everybody stand in the game. But I know for me, you know? It was Kerem Automation personally, so already Being on that mission. Let me ask you this man is a lot of controversy, obviously. And conversations that going out there you go. Keep it 100 with me right now. She's running backs. Now, Asriel. You know these running backs had fallen. You know they falling like flies right? Whether it's McCaffrey injured, whether you looking to say Quan Barclay injured whatever the case may be, should running back still be value from an economic standpoint, paying them. Long term. Definitely You know, Like I said before? It is unfortunate with the injuries, But you know all of backs, you know, they learn about it Kissable. "But with the cove nineteen rules and restrictions, they can't do that and they have elected not to do that chaumet felt like it was better for his team to. Get back home stay in her own bed bill move around walk around a little bit during the week instead of having everybody locked into a hotel. So interesting interesting development there, and we'll we'll see. How. That affects them as they go back to the eastern time zone in play the buffalo bills this week. So let's let's move on here and talk about next week's games coming up here we're going to start with Thursday night. And maybe not the most scintillating game, the dolphins and the Jaguars Owen to dolphins one in one. Jaguars. But that'll start us into Thursday so. Tell me what you think. Dolphins Jaguars I. I'll give you one guy that. We ought to be watching every single week because I think he's starting to turn heads and I. Started poor our data and I'm looking at Gartner Menchu's completing seventy five percent of his passes. Okay. fourth in the National Football League every time I look around the guy is just doing some really important. Now, he did throw a couple of interceptions last week that I think you know if he does a better job of taking the football, they're they're going to be a more games than not but right now he has the seventh. Highest Passer rating of any quarterback in the national football league in talking with many of the players talking with the coaches, the guy's got a good rhythm to the passing game. He gets the ball out very quickly. He's got a great feel. For the pocket in terms of his presence and the ball is out quickly and so as you look at it, the receivers for the Jacksonville Jaguars, they're all making place and they're getting surprise running game. This team is is battling a nearly came back to beat the Tennessee Titans. the Jaguars are playing very well, and he's one of the reasons why so I think he gives them a chance to win the game, and if I was asked you guys who's maybe the most productive are the highest grade tied in right now the national football league you might say hey, Darren Waller for the raiders after watching last night's game you know he's been targeted the most. He's had more receptions than anyone else. Yeah. But in terms of a guy who is graded higher might Koseki with the Miami Dolphins is a guy that's really starting to turn beheads He has the fourth most receptions but we have this tracking. We track yards per route run at is for every route that you're on even when the ball doesn't come your way you're on the field. It's a passing down yards per route run he second behind John New Smith of the Tennessee tights. Both of those tight ends are really good but pay attention to what Koseki is doing for the Miami Dolphins because he's putting up good numbers for their football team right now. I think I do think Jacksonville. Team I don't I don't think Miami is found. WHAT THEY WANNA do their at quarterback yet in fits and wrapped it in my love the guy. But. I just think that. I really think Jacksonville will dominate to game I. think There are a little bit of disarray down there. MIAMI. From a lot of aspects I won't get into..

The Fate of College Football's 2020 Season

"Ridden Berg thank you for taking a little bit of time after what is zoom is an incredibly chaotic day to chat with me. GREAT TO BE WITH IT'S A. Very historic and like you said wild and crazy time right now in college football, we figure out whether there'll be a season if there is who way. Adam Ridden Berg is scrambling to cover college football including the big ten. conference. For ESPN. Adam I want to start by rewinding a little bit actually from your perspective. What last week looked like because as a Friday, it kind of looked like we were GonNa have some college football. There was this path moving forward on that front and so if you had to make a chart. Of how things stood last week of who is in who is out who was on the fence for actually playing college football what would that chart have looked like? It's like an optimistic chart going back to two marsh but certainly even last week I still felt fairly optimistic about the possibility of a season. We had Yukon that announced on Wednesday that they weren't gonNA, play but they're independent. They're not connected to these television contracts like others are even these these group of five. Leagues. And then Thursday into Friday. He was hearing from sources around the sport that, Hey, this Mac meeting that was on Saturday in the mid American conference that was to be significant. That, there was a chance that at least one school was not going to play and others might be in the same boat and the whole league might decide at that point to postpone the fall season and football. It Yo it became clear that we were heading a lot closer to a you know a national postponement or at least a large groups of the College Football Leagues deciding not to play this fall. And so Adam you and I are talking at about six Oh five pm eastern time right now on a Monday so. What happened today and it will I guess what was the first thing that happened today on your feet? Well, again a lot we reported ESPN and others that the the big ten presidents were strongly leaning towards postponing that was on Sunday, and then you're the news that broke overnight was significant that this crash tag we WANNA play movement From Trevor Lawrence of Clemson and Justin fields of Ohio state. Some of the most prominent players in college football were getting real traction I mean this is your became the number one trending topic on twitter for a little while that was sort of the big story overnight and then today it's just monitoring. You know what's going on in the big ten. There's been reports that they've already canceled. That's not a at least as this recording that's not true. The Mountain West. Late, this afternoon did decide to postpone their seasons. So that's the second FBI's conference after the men American to decide not to play football and other sports this year. and You specifically cover the big ten that's your beat, and that's the conference. Everyone seems to be waiting to see what move comes next. So what exactly as we speak now is happening with the big ten this evening. Right. So it appears that the athletic directors are or speaking that's not a huge deal because they talking all the time now in the League but th, there's a sense of when they'll be a formal vote among presidents that hasn't taken place. I haven't heard from many sources that vote among presidents it's imminent but in theory I, it wouldn't take very long for that to take place if the League was ready to move forward with the postponement. So I think the discussions now are regarding timing whether some of the positions have changed around the conference. You've had a number of prominent coaches speak out about their desire to have. A season the big ten Pablo has always been a league. I I've covered it for a number of years that's been largely unified on the big topics and I can't remember a time where you've had a group of presidents that seem ready to postpone for the most part. But then you have many others loud voices in the league like the coaches like the players saying this isn't right. You can't do this. This is a wrong thing to do at this point and so that that's that's a unique spot for a conference has always prided itself on your equal revenue sharing and you're trying to be unified in its messaging.

Dwayne The Rock Johnson is Buying an Entire Football League

"For many of us, Monday nights sieve Longman, Monday, night football. So today's a good day to consider a shakeup in the football world. The potential revival of a would be competitor to the National Football League last week actor and former pro wrestler Dwayne the Rock Johnson with other investors bought a start-up Football League called the xfl this take some explanation especially to those who aren't avid sports fans. Let's start with the xfl contrary to popular belief. The NFL doesn't football is just had a monopoly for the most part for so long that most. Most people consider it an institution for the last couple of decades though rivals have attempted to build new leagues to compete with the. NFL. The XFL is one of those its roots began way back in the year two, thousand when World Wrestling Federation chairman. Vince. McMahon decided to build a league that could compete with the NFL NBC Cohen the League and planned to carry its games the XFL plan to extend the football season by playing games from just after the Super Bowl in February. Until late April. Now, at the time league owners, hopes were high that the Saturday night games could Wu and elusive audience TV. Teenage boys according to CNN. Vince McMahon. WWF had been almost magical in its ability to appeal to twelve to twenty four year. Old Males who typically don't stay home watching TV on Saturday nights. The xfl hoped McMahon could bring that WWF formula to football and win that desirable TV audience, and for one brief moment, it looked like their hopes were within reach the first game in two thousand, one drew more than fifteen million viewers a massive audience. That gold ring looked close and yet it turned out to be so far away as the season wore on audiences spell like a botched handoff after that single season, the xfl shutdown. Sometimes in life timing really is everything, and so it goes for Vince McMahon who decided that twenty twenty would be the right time to revive the xfl it launched in February, pitching the Seattle dragons against the DC defenders teams played five games among both players and owners. Optimism rained TV audiences varied by geography, but were decent enough that by March believe was well into planning the twenty twenty, one season. And then Kobe came along the League canceled the season March twentieth less than a month. Later, the XFL filed for bankruptcy sports writers added the xfl lists of other WanNa, NFL competitors who'd also tried to make a go of it over the years. The XFL seemed to be just another failed startup, but perhaps they declared the league's death too soon. Let's get back to Dwayne Johnson better known as the Rock Johnson actually started his career as a football player, but never made it to the NFL instead, he joined Vince McMahon's wwf where he quickly rose to superstardom before retiring to become an actor, he's now the highest paid actor in the world according to Forbes. With his business partner Danny Garcia who also happens to be his ex wife, the rock led the fifteen million dollar purchase of the. xfl. Out of Bankruptcy Sports Management Company redbird capital as a third partner. Johnson says the purchase was actually Garcia's idea she loves football and when the XFL declared bankruptcy, she saw their chance to own not just a team but an entire league not to get too grand about this. Consider that the salary of a single NFL football star say. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak. Prescott is thirty, one million dollars. That's more than double what the partners paid for the xfl which has eight teams. Still, the deal made headlines. Perhaps it's a bit of hopeful light entertainment amidst the onslaught of grim. News in two thousand, twenty, Garcia. Johnson. Say They plan to produce multimedia content for fans year round, not just during the active spring season at production time, they hadn't yet said when the League will start to play again.

Washington releases RB Guice shortly after arrest

"In the National Football League today came from Washington Washington football team. Cutting ties with running back Darius Dice the Redskins, releasing a statement that they had released the running back just hours after he was arrested on a felony charge is one of the accounts of strangulation and this is a situation in the NFL. That is one that leaked. This does not want and when you're the Washington football team As I was still trying to get used to everything of saying that the not saying that the the nickname George, but just off seeing the Washington football team, there has been a lot going on with this organization and the in the the football team, making the Ah the immediate move to arrest to let go of various guys. Following his arrest earlier today. Yeah, that's one of them. You know You messed up, right? You really messed up. It is. It's pretty bad, like if the team is saying, all right, we're kind of cutting bait with you because he's still young. I mean, he basically has it played. He's been hurt his 1st 2 years in The league and the team under Ron Rivera is clearly saying we're going in a different direction. And then you go back on the heels off, which was which probably didn't allow the legal system to play out and say All right is the guilty is the innocent. Any of that is all of the allegations that had been hurled at the Washington franchise to begin with. There was the Washington Post article. I believe that came out talking about the sexual alleged Sexual harassment and misconduct inside of the organization. And now when there is a potential strangulation and domestic abuse or abuse in general Darius Guys, he didn't stand a chance. This is a This is a time when he was in the wrong place. Wrong Time had had been another franchise. They may have been a little bit more patient to see some of the facts come out. But after that, and the name a no way they're not taking Any negative press from anybody does not named Dwayne Haskins, you know, and and when we had John Middlecoff on last hour, just talking about the situation I don't see with with what you say with the injuries. With the the history And now with these latest, you know, following his arrest on the domestic violence charges, I don't see Darius guys being back in the NFL. I just I don't I don't think that I don't even think it's a situation. Well, maybe down line, it would have Tio. It would have to be that he gets exonerated on all charges that it is. Normal? There's no such thing for college football anymore

"Of laughs about college football. And for those of you don't know. Now they've got college football players that are opting out of the 2020 season of Virginia Tech. Cornerback. His name's Caleb. I'm sorry. That's not Caleb Brantley. Yeah, um, Caleb barley. Partly for college football season, he's going to get ready for the draft. I would think there's more players like this. Who would would be More apt to just start training for the draft, getting ready for the combine as if it was gonna happen Normally, I don't know that it will. It's pretty early in the off season for this to have gone completely away in that amount of time. But I don't Makes sense to me. I guess I get it if you're if you've got a chance, and if you have, and most of these guys do know pretty well, they're going to get shot to play in the National Football League. How good a shot. You think you've got. May depend on whether you play or do not playing in the college football season or whatever that college football season. Looks like the brownie. You and I have talked about this. I don't know how colleges are going to get it done. You can say what you want about the NFL how unlikely it is. It's 10 times more unlikely at the college level to get a football season in Will you saw with the A. C C did They announced a 10 game conference schedule conference. Only they well and they pulled in Notre Dame who was who is who is an A C C member for basketball and other sports, but was not for football. They were still independent. And they convinced Notre Dame Two. Take their NBC television money and put it in the A. C. C pot. In exchange for playing a full conference schedule. And being eligible. To play for the conference title. And To play in the Orange Bowl in the A C C spot should they win the conference? Right. That is seismic. Yeah, that's what it is. But it is. It is indication on How much cove it has kind of turned. The normal way of doing business in college football upside out. I mean, these are desperate measures. I mean, it's a football powerhouse, making a seismic move after refusing any and all advances to join a conference. Yeah, here they

Fox Sports debuts virtual fans for MLB live broadcast

"Night Major League Baseball became the first major sport to go ahead and broadcast games. Weird state where people are thrilled to have entertainment as we're talking, we don't know how thing rated. Crates well. I find it particularly amusing. That Fox sports has said they will debut virtual fans in the live broadcast during this shortland twenty twenty season, so the people people who watch this well as seen CGI fans brought to them. You know with Hollywood special effects and I have to say I think it's an awfully good idea. Well, the initial broadcasts with the crowd noise has been a significant improvement over just watching a silent baseball field with no fans and you can hear. Hear the BASS coaches talking to each other like that's not good, but you know they're really trudging forward now. Baseball and other team sports are in this odd situation where there is so much money on the line that they kind of have to move forward, and they're doing it in whatever way they can, and the audience at least from the preliminary number suggests they want it to the ratings for some of the preseason scrimmages in these major markets were gigantic and. And Fox reported that they had sold out ninety percent of their ad inventory for these sixty game major league baseball season that is going to happen start over the next couple of months, and this is really the big test. Because yes, there's been tennis. There's been golf, but this is the big restart of team sports, and the NBA is going to follow, and they're all living in this bubble in Orlando Florida. Trying to get the NBA restarted Major League Baseball. Baseball is trying to restart even as one of the players on the Washington nationals tested positive for covid nineteen. The day that the season was set to start, so they're going to be these setbacks, but I don't see the League's canceling their seasons because of them, there's just so much money at stake. They're going to trudge forward and the big one. Coming up is the NFL and what they're going to do. The revenue for Fox sports for Turner for ESPN. Is desperately needed I. This is billions of dollars in lost money if they can't get these games up and start selling this. Thing so it's critical and. Obviously there's pressure all around to find a way to make it work and for the NFL which is by far the biggest draw in television, the training camps are set to start and the players union has agreed tentatively to a testing procedure, but there's no agreement on whether there's going to be fans at these games, and whether the season is going to come off like it would otherwise they cancelled some of the preseason games, but whether the actual season is. Is going to happen and how that's going to look is still a big question, and for television that billions and billions of dollars in revenue in the balance, and we're already seeing several college football leagues, either pushing their seasons or cancelling them entirely, and that's going to be the next domino effect. This virus cannot get under control in the next month or two. Then you're GonNa see College. Football pretty much eliminated for the fall in my in my prediction. Some leagues will probably try to continue, but ultimately if you can't keep college players safe, then you can't have a football season so. We'll see what the NFL does, but college football is a gigantic business as well on a more frivolous note. I will just observe that Fox. Had plans in terms of the baseball game to to thin the digital crowd. If there isn't like an eight to one game, and the crowd normally would go, so at least they're keeping that part real. Wow, can they make the dodgers? Fans leave in the seventh inning. I'm sure the virtual died. Here's fans will want to get on the freeway. Justice, the real ones

Bill O'Reilly Responds to NFL Plans for Social Justice Decal Stickers on Helmets

"For the O'Reilly Update Message of the day the National Football League damaging itself by getting political League officials, owners, players are compiling a list of names to be used on helmet decals. Including George Floyd. The program, alas, throughout the entire season. Commissioner Roger Goodell recently apologized for his opposition to players taking a knee during the national anthem in seasons past. Saying We were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and now encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest. We, the National Football League believe black lives matter. Well, most Americans believe black lives matter, but they also believe police lives matter. 10 players put a decal of slain police officers on their helmet, Mr Goodell It's not Then your league is a political organization, not a sports franchise. In 2016. The NFL rejected Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, who wanted to wear stickers on his helmet honoring the five police officers. Slain in Dallas. According to league policy then and now quote Players generally must present an appearance that is appropriate to representing their individual clubs and the National Football League. The term uniform is used in this policy applies to every piece of equipment worn by a player, including the helmet. So if you were banning In the past all slogans on uniforms. And you're going to change it now You've got to change it for everybody. By agreeing to social protests on the field. The NFL will anger many fans. You will not support the product. That means less revenue for the lead. Let me spell it out. Fans can't go to many of the games this year. So the merchandise the shirts, the jackets off the teams is the primary source of revenue. Well, I'm not buying any merchandise if the NFL bans police officers from being honored I'm not going to do it. But far more important is the message. That the NFL is apparently sending America's an unknown fair country. Okay, we need to improve sane people agree, but it's all one side now. So I don't believe this is going to work out well for the National Football League, the N ba Major League baseball of his starts. There should be no politics on Game day. That's easy. No politics on Game day. If the players want to talk about social justice on for that, then come on my programs any time. But not on games during the week with the press conference is sure no problem

After 87 years, Washington's NFL team changed in two months

"In the National Ball League for the soon to be ex Washington Redskins among the three teens who played in the NFL. He is Brandon Noble, played defensive tackle in the National Football League, and he joins me and Courtney right here on ESPN Radio Brandon, many people did not believe that this day would come. That Washington changed their name from the Redskins. Whatever that name is going to be, but you play for that organization. You know exactly what that Brian has always meant to that team. And to that city. What are your thoughts about the Redskins no longer about to be Redskins when it comes to being a football team with that name in the NFL. I mean, it's definitely Freddy. Hard to wrap my head around, right? So I grew up in Virginia down the virginity Redskin fan base there. You know what I spent seven years. In the lead. We're basically in the NFC East. Whether I played for the Cowboys on the run on just I mean, growing up a football fan, right? I mean, Russians are part of NFL tradition. Just the name right so So you know Cowboys Redskins Cowboys Eagles Cowboys giants like that. The whole thing like that is that is that my childhood like Joe Gibbs is in the heart and all that stuff, so it's really hard to wrap your head around. I know there was a strong push a few years ago in and dance cider time, fended it off, kind of where we are right now 2020 and you know there's a lot of financial pressure from stuff like that, and it looks like he's gonna do it. Yeah. After 87 years. It took just two months for this whole thing to come to fruition where Something's going to be changed, as you know, growing up in that area and playing for the franchise. This name change has been discussed for decades. I'm curious what you were a player. How often did that topic come up in the early two thousand's about a name change? And do you remember maybe the first instances as a player either being asked about it by media members or where it was truly being discussed? Well, you know, I mean, it was. It was definitely kind of it was circled around every once in a while, and I think you know such a different climate. Uh, you know, back in the 19 hundreds at the early two thousand's, we were in it and everything has become No So political now, so just kind of you know, here, there, it's you know what? This night of faces time It took a long time definitely did. It's definitely something that's been talked about for a long, long time. You know that that fan base is not going to be happy. But at the end of the day, you know, look, you know it's capitalism, right? I mean, he felt the pressure that accent from all from all the big sponsors. You know Amazon self, just about body, right? I mean, that's really what it boils down to is a business. Know any treat it like that, and he's going to do it. And I did it a same time. I'm still gonna have a tough time with whatever you know. Hopefully the warriors or something simple like that. So it's not too far away from kind of, you know the theme. I guess it's it's so it's hard to wrap my head around.

"Kevin are you mean well. I'm starting experience little football withdrawal d think others Are Feeling that way. I think so. I think this is a week. Where people would it? Hits them quickly that football's over Kevin Siefert writes about the NFL and the XFL for ESPN. And it's not coming back again until September so that feels like a long long time from now. Yeah I know the symptoms of football withdrawal are pretty recognizable on Sunday mornings as I go downstairs. I just sit blankly in front of my television staring at it waiting for something to materialize. Sickness is probably a few people reconciling salary cap numbers in preparation for free as well but those are only the hardest core of the hardcore people. Again I I think most people when they hear. XFL's launching their first reaction is why. Now you know I. I think it's pretty simple. It's that football continues continues to be the most popular sport in this country. The NFL is by far the most profitable pro sports league in the country and people want a piece of it and there are so few NFL Games over the course of one year that it feels like there's a big part of the calendar that still has a window open for well-played interesting football and yet that boys existed. It's just not work in the past. I mean most recently with the Alliance of American football the ball we have breaking news. ESPN reporting the Alliance of American. Football is suspending all operations. Here is the similar logic. They wanted to fill the void but right after eight weeks sleek went bankrupt. How are they not anxious about that happening again? Well the one thing that's different about the XFL compared appeared to really any other alternative league that has tried to come up is that they have legitimate money behind them. XFL Kickoff in twenty twenty quite. I frankly we're GONNA give the game of football back to fans. Vince McMahon the chairman and CEO of WWe is the owner and financier of this league. He has committed a fair amount to do. This doesn't mean he is going to spend it all or he should spend it all or that he couldn't pull it back at any time but it's is an important first step to actually have real money behind a league and so that gives them some confidence that if they make some progress each year they'll have multiple years to develop a product product still. It is very hard as many people have proven over the past few decades to start a football league from scratch scratch where does your when the XFL originally launched in two thousand one with Vince McMahon at the how it felt at the time like an extension of WWe Violence and scantily clad cheerleaders and loud noises and they were pitting themselves against the NFL. which at the time they were calling the no fun league and the XFL was the extra fun league but this time around? They seem to be marketing. It very differently very much. So Vince McMahon has been completely absent from the promotional run up to the season. And I think that's by design. He hired Oliver Luck to be the commissioner and I think people would agree overlooks one of the most respected serious sports sports administrators in the country in terms of all the different jobs that he's had they really view themselves their window their market as hardcore football fans who are really bombed that football is over and they need to appeal to those people they did a study and they came up with the idea that there's forty million people people at the end of the NFL season. Who would be interested in more football after that? And those are the people that they're focusing on. I think there is reasonably a lot of skepticism. Assim around football fans who have seen these leagues in the past fail. How has Oliver lucked commissioner responded to that I think he understands you know he? He's well aware that the history tells you that this has never worked at least in the modern era of pro sports in this country we recognize the past and we've studied a lot of those leagues and they often come down really to two things one they were not a capital secondly making bad decision. And you know having a guy like Vince who's built incredibly successful businesses will help us not fall into making a bad decision making. I also think Jeremy's last time a alternate football ball league worked was the American football league and they ended up merging with the NFL fifty some years ago and so He's well aware that this has been tried many times and I think he's fairly humble about the process that they have ahead of them. Everyone who works for the XFL you know some of whom worked for the original XFL know that this is almost an unprecedented ed situation. If they were to succeed so I don't think they have any illusions about how easy it will be. But I think they do feel like they've put some things in place that have never been put in place before for an an alternative football league. What is the basic structure of the League? There's eight teams. There's about forty to fifty fifty players on each team. They're spread out around the country. Most of them are in warm weather places because this is going to be a late winter early spring season. La Houston Tampa Bay Dallas some of the teams there. DC in New York will be the two that will play outdoors and somewhat cold environments the play ten games over the next ten weeks and they'll be semi final the week Gov April eighteenth and nineteenth and then a championship game on the twenty sixth which is the day after the NFL draft and then those players will then be eligible go to NFL MINICAMPS and training camps if they garner interest said the XFL. This time is trying to avoid unstick but they also are changing a lot of the rules. What are some of the rule changes in this league? That jumped out to you as being particularly interesting well. They're very much believe that the kickoff should stay part of the game and be a much more exciting play than it is in the NFL touchback on kickoffs in the NFL reached almost sixty eighty percent this past year. It's almost a dead play so basically what the XFL has done is moved. The kickoff back five yards so that it's unlikely to go into the end zone own and they've moved all the cover people and all the coverage people between thirty and thirty five yard line and nobody can move until the returner catches the ball. And then you can start blocking and tackling pulling. This is a way to dramatically increase the number of returns without sacrificing much in the way of health and safety they also have done some things with the punt if you kick punt into the end zone. It's coming back to the thirty five yard line. And if you try a coffin corner kick and it goes out of bounds. It's also coming back to the thirty five yard line. So there's a big incentive to go for it when you're anywhere on the other side of the fifty and then point after attemps. Trump's have changed as well compared to the way the. NFL does it. There's GonNa be no kicking you either. Go for one point from the two yard line to from the five yard line and three read from the ten yard line and so that will give people a lot more options Certainly a more exciting play than an extra point and it actually will probably minimize the number number of overtime games. Because you'll have a chance. Basically at a nine point touchdown if you go for three after scoring and sounds like the XFL is waging war on special teams. I think that they realize that special teams important but that for the most part in the NFL special teams has not been very exciting in recent years ethnic fans will appreciate that if you can actually make punts and kickoffs interesting. What are the players salaries like the average? XFL player will earn fifty five thousand dollars over the course of ten games. Assuming he's on the roster the active roster for all ten games most of the quarterbacks they signed we are getting more than that fifty five thousand dollars a few of them are are approaching the minimum NFL salary. That's in the four hundred ninety thousand dollar range and the XFL felt strongly Oliver luck in particular that if they were going to devote resources to player salaries if should be at the quarterback spot that so much would snowball from good quarterback play or bad quarterback play or at least credible quarterback play. And so that's why they were paying some of the quarterbacks a lot more money but for the most part they're not even close to to say. NFL practice squad type salaries well along those lines. Could a college quarterback like I dunno Trevor Lawrence who's not yet draft eligible leave school go to the XFL and make some money before the draft. He absolutely could and that was sort of one of the market disruptions that we wondered if the XFL will try to attempt because as we know in the NFL you have to have been away from high school for three years before your draft eligible the XFL does not have that rule is not bound to it and so presumably could have recruited Trevor Lawrence to leave Clemson play a season with them. You know get a lot more eyeballs on the league and so that is the paradigm worth watching for future years if they're our future years of the XFL but this year they did not choose to do that in a high profile away. Kevin what do you think success will look like for the XFO ultimately the only success for any for profit business like the XFL in the NFL or anyone else's if they make money but I think this year success would be that they get through a ten game season and at the end of the season people can look back and say that was actually a really cool fun brand of football. You know one thing that's going to happen happening. Every single one of these Games is going to get national television on either. ABC ESPN ESPN two or one of the Fox channels as well so every single game is going to get measured Richard for ratings and that will give us an idea of our people buying in the XFL can say that yes S. people bought in. And here's the data. We have to prove it in terms of ratings and attendance been. It'll be a success and then they can reliably go into a second year looking to build.

"I'll be honest I I. I never thought like Patrick. Mahomes was GONNA be who he is. I thought a clear cut guy was shot Watson any of those two guys on the the bears. The bears are in the Super Bowl last year. I'll look dude. I'M A. I'm a fan so like this is supposed to be our ear and then look at. You look just like a week before or you know so well it. Actually he announced his retirement At a pre game when they were playing the Dan. That's right yeah because they booed booed him off the off the field unbelievable which is unbelievable but they that that happened there at the preseason game so I I think thank Mahomes is is good enough to figure out that neither defense and I think I do too. That's what I'm pulling for. Yeah I can't believe they came back from twenty. I can't either man that's crazy so yeah I think it's a great match up. It's actually the matchup that I wanted for the Super Bowl. "I all week playing I constantly Like thought back to NFL blitz which is so funny that you mentioned that because that was like one of the few sports games that I ever enjoyed where. I'm like a big sports sports fan but like I just don't get into sports games and all week I constantly thought of. NFL bullets with play with my brother. And calling the same stupid plays again and again. So it's Berlusconi said Matt so like being in the industry do you view games differently than like regular people who play games like are. Are you more generous to like a really bad game or when you see a bad game you just like wow like. They didn't even try at all. Well it so it depends so if you're in the industry you tend tend to be more analytical implant other games because you're thinking oh how did they do that. Or how did they get that share on that character To make that that character looks so amazing. So you're you kinda always analyzing games and if you see something cooler you like Kinda write it down in you know you store it so so maybe we can do something like that in whatever game. We're working on next so you've got that but in terms of when you play a game in like gear gotten bogs in stuff like. That's just that that pisses me off. You know it's just if like you gotta you gotTa try and you know ship products. That don't have a million bucks so if you have a million bucks it's rush the product. I also have problems with games at torture me so sometimes you know. They wanted to try and get more hours they wanted have you spend more hours is playing the game so they have you kind of dying a lot and You know that frustrates me too. So but beyond that. Ah I don't have a lot of time to play a ton of games so the Games that I try to play are either the games that I need to play for like research purposes purposes or the Games. I really really WANNA play. Because they got game of the year or you know they're just so recognized as is being of high quality and excellence or just great experiences that I wanNA check them out but I don't have a lot of time to put hours and hours into a game. I tend to like a lot of times by kids. Always play games and is bad and watch because he's actually a better game player that I I can get through stuff that I can't cool. I've reached that point to play in Smash Brothers with my nine year old and it's gotten to the point where he just wrecks we now. It's not even close and they're they're so good at it. It's just crazy you did mention blitz of couple times with this game. Did you create a whole new engine for it or were you using a specific engine previously done in another game out now we I mean where we we have an. I mean we're on unit. A football league was developed on unity. But all the the code that made the game of football game that's all proprietary cold that we created and we continue to improve over time because I mean we released the product awhile ago but we're still updating it like we just did an updates This week so what that what those updates typically thickly are some bugs there's some community requests always in there and we we always update the teams to reflect You know the NFL status in terms of rankings of teams power rankings. A So we we update our teams a couple times during the season just so it reflects doc semi. NFL Trades. That were made in that type of thing. That's pretty cool kiss while we don't have any. NFL teams what we do. Immune football league is we have some made up teams that are like fantasy teams like we have a a rock and roll heavy metal team and we have like a team that's made of ORCS and they're called the ORCs of hazards. They're kind of like the big dumb southern ORCs so we have SA- made up teams that don't exist a steady where and then we also have parody teams of NFL teams so like for example the Kansas City chiefs. We've got at the carcass city creeps and we just released were releasing some D. L. C. on January thirty. First I which is the San Francisco. Forty nightmares so we release that D. L. C. Like people can do their super bowl matchups before the big game us very cool. It's awesome. I appreciate the constant stream of teams stuff. So what are some of the Games that had a big impact on new new Either growing up or just even recently like have you had any games that you just really stood out to you that you've played recently Yeah I mean so I'm I'm actually you know I I've always been a fan of madden so I play a ton of Man Right now I'm like playing a lot of sports games right so touquet UK NBA and the gotTa wars man has been one of my. That's on my list. I literally bought that for like ten ten bucks in. It's literally sat on my shelf ever since I'm just one day and again to it. That's one of the Games I was talking about like where It's just so cool right. It's just so such a just a visually stunning game. And it's got a great story. I'm like watching. My kid had get through because some of those bosses. I can't and I just watch my kid and he he just gets through and I'm enjoying the story. Now you've put without a game independently. What's next you're going to keep The Indy train rolling in. See yourself just doing things on your own or going to. We'll come like a or something else in developing again that way not week we have a company digital dreams entertainment So we do a variety of different games like we've gotTA shooter Game Out Called Carnivores Dinosaur Hunter and we've got Mutant Football League league and then we did the mutant football league dynasty addition and right now we were working on a project. That is top secret okay. It is pretty freaking cool. And I'm like so excited about this product. I wish wish I could talk about it but I can't. Will you let us know we've got our team working on that project right now and and Bike if we can pull this one off. It's gotTa be pretty amazing that a indie studio was able to do something like we're doing we. We got a long way to go before we get there. But what we've got right now is looking pretty cool. We obviously need some help on on Some funding as we get a little closer. I mean the way the industry works now. Is They Kinda WanNa see like almost a game amid Alpha before to get some serious hard hard to do that when when they have standards like that. It's not really standards. Like I'm I'm sure there's other developers that go in and that have either such an incredible track record of success or they could go in there with a concept that is just like it. Hits the Bullseye for that particular publisher you know they might debt funding from the beginning. But for US I like that hasn't been our path not that we haven't tried with just it hasn't been like that. It was like the same thing with football league. What we didn't even get a publisher until we were damn near Alpha So it's it's I feel like this has got to be kind of the same thing you know. Once you can release a product and have itsel units in the millions and that kind of changes things so so obviously beaten. Football League was not a million units. Our Okay give pretty good for us. I mean it it was. It did did very well for us. But if you're looking at major publishers you know they want to sell units. They want to sell it. The a million's not in the hundreds of thousands. Now when you say publisher is that for physical hard copies or you do need to Punt Plaza publisher that we saw up with for mutant. Football League was Nighthawk and they wanted to sell the retail version so we licensed percents The retail versions for them to ship. You know to put retail product out and then our company controlled all the digital. One of the things is a football fan. And and I don't know if you feel like I've always been more of the NCW football guy and Do you look at the current landscape of football video game. Say Oh there's this opportunity here Because the This franchise is gone at least for the time being and say. Hey maybe that's a place where we can fill in. Yeah well there is no current landscape of football video games right there and that's there's Madden football and if you want. NFL players in your football game Good Luck Kiss. EA has the exclusive rights to those so There's only one football game and that's madden now. There's a couple yeah. There's a few other football games out there whether they are on mobile. I guess he doesn't have the NFL NFL rights for Mobile. But exclusively. So I think you can do Games with NFL players on mobile. But mobile's really I mean that's it's it's a tough market mobile I may. We do develop mobile games but the license is so uh-huh expensive I would imagine for You know NFL players in NFL teams. That Decca very high risk of you've just being able to release the game on mobile only then the other Games out there like they're either really super super super are Katie. So they're not really like tactical football or they are but they don't have the players right so besides for mad right now. I mean there's not much right if you WANNA play a football game and I think the best football game out there in terms suggest fun and entertainment and play mechanics would be butte and football league right because there is no blitz. They're like it's yeah. There is no go to college football. So it's just like you could play man or you could play our game and those are the options. Chances Are you've probably bought maddened last year and it hasn't changed that much. Slow mean flowery at least be a new experience. Yeah I made it. It's definitely GonNa give you something different but but it is not a simulation and you know a lot of people go Nadan they. They just update rosters every year. And they just you know while they're development is just Ultimate team and they don't do anything other than that and you know that's just that's so not true. They they put in story mode right and then they thank God. They're developing features. It's just magazine is kind of of this. Jogger not of a game and it has so many aspects to it but I mean those guys ad pretty pretty big features every year so if you want a simulation football game I mean they they do a great but ah having some competition would only make bad and better right so ed two K had their football game out like a lot of people love that game. I mean it's their favorite football game ever and engaged magazine serious competition and in in capitalist society. I mean having competition is good. Because it doesn't allow you to sit on your laurels. And you gotTa keep innovating aiding and making your game better better when there's no competition it's like it's a little different story. Arbor Number Y.. Two K. Five was last. NFL Touquet game. And I remember they came out with that game and it was twenty dollars in a fifty dollar world I was a madden guy and I said let me I gotTa go try it for twenty dollars writing and it was the game I played more. So I'm I'm totally with you there. Yeah well they really what they did so well in that game was the blocking in the running between tackles like they. They had that like so. Well done that. It just felt right and it looked right when you're playing it so and then of course madden had to improve their running between the tackles because that's important people that are playing simulation football so so it was all good but I mean they did such a great job on that products Ed Coming out at twenty dollars and then eating up a huge market share are mad and I mean that was brilliant. It wasn't coincidence. That after that twenty dollars launch that that's when they snapped up. EA snapped up that NFL license. So well yeah yeah. They felt threatening. They did and I mean nobody had ever paid that much for a license in video game history. I mean that was the largest license ever paid when they did it and they said you know what it's football and we want to own that market and and that's what they did. So who do you got on Sunday. All right here we go. I was going to be the chief you now come on. It's a tough to Patrick. mahomes generally teams that have stout defenses. Do Very well in the Super Bowl but in my heart and who I'm rooting for are the Kansas City chiefs. I want Andy Reid to get him. He deserves the trophy. The niners have a lot of super bowls. I want Andy Reid. An Patrick Mahomes. Who Right now is the face of the NFL? She such a talent and she'll do such chill dude too. Yeah I I just I I see him. Do Things That I've never seen any other quarterback in the NFL do and this is particularly disheartening for me coming from Chicago and in the NFL draft. There was Shawn Watson there is Patrick Mahomes Mitch. And the bears trade up give away a first round draft trade up one spot with the niners ars who weren't GonNa get a draft a quarterback. They already had one but Chicago was worried. That all these other teams were GONNA I. They have no idea to me was that they did that. But I when I heard Mitchell trubisky in Iran auden Watson I just was like I what what did they just do..

"The proceedings we hope you had a safe eighth and festive holiday season and that you're geared up for another fun filled adventurous Year in what we like to sort of delve delve into that Being things defunct in previously domiciled and located in the realm of professional sports in this week is absolutely no exception option. We welcome our guest to the proceedings in our microphones. This week Michael Hugue. who was the original? And I think frankly only although it might be a little old debatable at the League's sort of last month's of the United Football League and yes you could be forgiven for not knowing or remembering the the NFL. The United Football League not the World Football League not the United States. Football League the UFL the United Football League that was a a brief blip on the pro football landscape That kind of sort of Fun for too long for a couple years. Two thousand nine to two thousand twelve If you were paying attention never really got more than five teams in the League but if you remember teams like the California redwoods where the New York sentinels The Las Vegas locos does Let's see the Omaha city or the Omaha nighthawks were very popular team in the NFL. Let's see the Sacramento Mountain. Ten Lions the Virginia destroyers which started their original lies as the as the Florida tuskers and whole fascinating set of stories around the Four or so seasons of this thing called the United Football League which we're going to get into with our guest this week Michael Hugh. It's a fascinating tale ad. It's wrapped wrapped up in a lot of intrigue as well as some expectations. If you SORTA dial it back to Two thousand seven or so when the UFL Kinda that SORTA got going Masters Bill Hambrecht of of venture capital out in California a Tim Armstrong of AOL and previously Google fame. Up Mark. Cuban was rumored to be part of this. Nancy Pelosi's Yes Sir are A. US House of Representatives Leader leader her husband was part of the original mix as well this. These are people sort of looking around at yet yet. Again pro football and perhaps why maybe the NFL hadn't Maybe expanded and a whole bunch of years and frankly around twenty eight twenty nine Some perhaps in certain circles expectations that the National Football League might wind up. Seeing it's players go on strike or the owners locking out the players or some some form or fashion of that and the thinking was Paul Pelosi. Nancy Pelosi's does your husband Speaker of the House. Nancy Pelosi t boone. Pickens was in the mix as well. These are all people either rumored or actually involved financially in starting this UFL United Football League with the thought that perhaps not unlike some other league expectations to especially around the NFL NFL of perhaps player. Strife that would might come in the big league the National Football League and and if that were to have occurred in the latter part of the of the. What's the thinking was that this UFL this fledgling United Football League might be the only thing in town the only game in town pro football wise perhaps APPs could indeed sop up some of the The Forlorn Nano players but also certainly fans that might be missing the NFL. Of course all of that never really panned out. But it still didn't stop the UFL from giving a go with some some major Nimes Especially in the coaching. Greg's talking about a people like Dennis Green and Doug Williams was in the mix you had people like like Jim has let in the mix you had You know a whole bunch of a Jim Fossil These are players coaches Leeann. A lot of players who had a couple of cups of coffee in the National Football League and and again. This is a story that we've heard over and over again. We talk about things like the world football league in the USFL and and things like nfl you rope by and The World League of American football these are you know it's either players on the way up young players that for whatever for reasons Got Their cups of coffee and various. NFL training camps or got caught or Shortened by injury and wanted to make the comeback Perhaps players here's that had some glory years and felt that they had a few things few games a few seasons left in the tank. Shake that vigorously folks You know look and maybe to get back into the show of the NFL. These are all sort of The stories not only of the players but the coaches administrators as well and and as we've talked about many many times Plenty of Appro football caliber quality folks out there on all levels whether they'd be on the coaching or the management or certainly the player ranks thanks. We're going to see it again in the XFL in a couple of weeks We thought we were going to see it with the Alliance of American football but again you know the football was probably not the problem with the AF but there are plenty of players and plenty of. Aspire it's ready to sort of buckle up and get into the game and and continue were were were pursue further a professional national career and and The again in the late two thousands early to Twenty tens was absolutely part of that mixture. And we're going to get into that with the original and long time. I think the only frankly commissioner of the NFL Michael Hugh who himself was is instill still is pro football management renegade. He was part of the World League of American Football He management to a person within the Detroit Lions Organization and was Drafted into this UFL by the folks like Bill Hambrecht and And Tim Armstrong and Paul Pelosi and some of the other money folks behind kindness and we're going through the ups and largely down and sideways of the United Football League. Coming right up with Michael Hugh I in just a couple of moments. This is fascinating acid stuff. That's the reason why we live. The reason why exist on the show that we invite you to stay tune in and maybe gear up for for some of it by a couple of purchases with some of our great sponsors. Why don't you want to keep the show going and all these kinds of great stories that we left on earth three each and every week?.

"The National Football League. I'm nothing about football. I always leave that to rush. He loves it. I'm a I'm a rugby guy. I like that. I, you know, if I'm if I'm gonna play a sport, that's physically endangering to me. I don't wanna wear a shoulder pads and the safety how man just like to get my head kicked in directly. It's much more sense. Fine. Incredible. It's not just that he's blown up the national anthem. He's actually severed the affection. change everything. So you think there might be someone else? "In the last number months with this sort of silly little podcast of a and and and learning about lots of different things along the way is that the to me one of the common threads of of some of this stuff is let's be frank ego right and and almost sort of big boy ego right where you know football is you know perhaps a childhood memory of their own and you know the chance to have a very expensive plaything uh perhaps of course to to ensure making money and all that stuff i from a business perspective but he it's also let's be honest the the fortunes that these uh uh all gentleman rights sort of a created or inherited or or or augmented in their professional careers right i i'm not sure that they would have necessarily looked upon a startup a professional football league as a way to embellish that wealth right i mean there's there's some practicality that gets thrown out the window when you talk about sort of the i don't know the the the the the dreamlike fantasy i guess of owning a professional football team and and then there is a circumstance in which you look it up uh in alternative professional football league and you see profitpotential uh and a large profitpotential and that would be a merger situation uh so right you know right from the start that that is probably the fastest way to any profitability but short of that you're absolutely right on a daytoday basis on a yeartoyear basis he probably going to lose a little money but you become a big wheel in in your hometown you you really elevate your status as a businessman by owning a professional sports team that's always been the theory and so he absolutely right ego is is part of a driver for sports ownership without ego we probably be looking at a much smaller sports landscape yeah that's a just and and it's also to interesting to discern see how you go.

"Segue because in the sort of the the journey in the history and stephane will sort of ask some other sort of a procedural questions along the way but um yeah i guess maybe take us back and and his office obviously a revisit cheer childhood right in the ah the early eighties right so the the idea of this of this challenger league to the uh the mighty uh national football league right was pretty much began in the very early part of the 1980s when indeed you're describing a media landscape that was you know cable was becoming a thing was that the era of you know ob asking calling your cable operator of you had a cable subscription to i you know i want my mtv ride and other things he rate apec espn and 1979 live wet back when it actually stood for something the entertainment and sports programming network uh you know by college basketball and uh you know it was really very nascent times a based on your journey backward into the early rumblings of this ligo what is your assessment of i guess the narrative of of effectively how did this essentially come about from your perspective garb league was the idea of a man named david dixon he was a new orleans and peak dealer me with pretty well connected down there and just to say that he was an antique dealer does him a little injustice 'cause you wonder how does a guy like that become involved in pro football but he had been involved in staging nfl exhibition games in new orleans before the saint he had been part of the deal the brokered the saint and the nor orleans super dumped so he was the guy who's known in football circles who could get the nfl commissioner pete roselle on the phone so he was a a wellconnected guy and he had had this idea how far back um i think before the american football league merchant in the nfl.
