"football league" Discussed on The Lead

"It's officials to decide what becomes public. So what is your overall sense of how Brian Flores has conducted himself through all of this? We've seen him do some television interviews. What are your thoughts on how he's presenting himself in this very high stakes case? Yeah. Brian Flores is a really serious individual and I think that comes across. I think he's a good face for this because he's not someone who has a history of being like saying inflammatory things publicly. He's not really ever done that, you know? He's been pretty straight shooter. When you think of Brian Flores, you don't think, oh yeah, that guy will say anything. This game has done a lot for me. A lot for me personally. And my family, you know, I've said this on other shows, but my parents are immigrants. I'm first generation. I grew up with a tough neighborhood here in Brooklyn Brownsville, where this crime and poverty and, you know, violence. And it was hard to make it out of there, and the game of football is the reason why or a big reason why along with a lot of the great people that mentors I've had in my life while I was able to have the success that I've had. I think he comes across very, very credible, just because of who he is and really what he is sacrificing potentially to go this route. He had options. He would have had a future he may still, but right now that is very much in limbo based on his actions here. So I think that gives him a huge benefit of the doubt in this whole situation. Well, he still has options because Flores is currently a finalist for two other head coaching positions, but as you have just mentioned, he is acknowledged, this lawsuit could potentially cost him future opportunities. Do you think this spells the end of Brian Flores as NFL coaching career? That is going to be fascinating to watch play out because Colin Kaepernick also filed suit against the NFL for collusion against him after he protested racial injustice. They settled that case, he did not play in the NFL again, and I think he understood that when he filed that lawsuit that that was probably never going to happen again. There were some overtures and conversation, but I don't know that anyone really seriously expected it to go anywhere. The difference here is that Colin Kaepernick's standing as a player at that time was not parallel to Brian Flores is standing as a head coach right now. Now I still think Colin Kaepernick was a very viable quarterback at the time and I've seen many worst quarterbacks. Okay, we all have, okay, so that is not a quest. That is not in question. In this case, though, his coach was very hot commodity. He's a candidate for other jobs. He interviewed for the New Orleans Saints, head coach position, the morning before the lawsuit was revealed. So he's in the mix, clearly, or was, but I do think that it's definitely going to give teams pause. I mean, if you're a team right now, I can't see a team in this particular hiring cycle, hiring Brian Flores with all of this still in flux. The one thing the NFL owners do very well is stick together. And they do not break ranks. So it's very hard to envision a team saying we're going to look past all of that and potentially tick off a lot of other owners in the process. So right now, I think there's no chance. The question is, if and when this is resolved in whatever fashion, will a team at some point be able to see past it and say, you know what? We still think he's a viable coach and can make our team better and we'll make that higher. That I think is going to be a fascinating test case. I do think the odds are against it depending on how nasty this gets, so I don't think we can answer that question until we know what the resulting damage is from all of this and this process and how many people come out with dirt on them. But when he filed that lawsuit, he did it knowing this could be the end. He was prepared for that. He's smart enough to know what he's dealing with. Do you believe he will ever coach in the National Football League again? I'm hopeful that I will. I'm very hopeful, but I understand the risks of filing a lawsuit like this. But if change, if change comes, and if I never told you again, and there's change, it'll be worth it. This isn't about me. This isn't about. This is bigger than football. This is about equal opportunity for qualified, black candidates, not just in football, but everywhere, and all industries. He's going to be a trendsetter. For example, heard from a black assistant coach this week who has a prominent role on a team, and what he said to me was, you know, he says I had been really, really frustrated with things. I wanted to be a head coach for a long time. I've gotten so frustrated with things that I kind of wash my hands of the whole thing in the last few months. He said, but you know, Brian Flores has made me reconsider. He's like, I'm more resolved to push than ever. After seeing what he did, that was just that had a lot of impact on me. Just from a human standpoint, not even a reporter standpoint. Like, man, you know what? This could really be groundbreaking in many different ways that we hadn't even considered. Well, thank you so much for sharing your perspective, Steven, really appreciate it. My pleasure. Coming up, how legal experts think this lawsuit will play out in the courts. Jon Gruden Resigns as Raiders Coach Over Decade-Old Offensive Emails

"John Gruden has always been kind of a wild child in the NFL always been a little bit of a loose cannon, if you will. And I believe he was also he was also the coach of the Oakland Raiders in like the 90s. And then he went to the Buccaneers and led them to the Super Bowl very complicated. But then he rejoined the Raiders in 2018 after he was an analyst on Monday Night Football. Do you remember those things he used to sit down with the quarterbacks? And it was like Gruden's corner. I've never been a big fan of Jon Gruden. I'll be very honest. One in 2002, that's right, my memory's not too bad. I'm not going to be an apologist for Jon Gruden. Okay? I'm sure he lives a complicated life like most people in the NFL. But this recent saga involving in his resignation slash termination is disgusting. And the national Football Association is in many different ways. In enterprise that is built on a House of Cards. The entire structure of how many of the teams are filed as nonprofits on how almost every stadium is built thanks to taxpayer dollars. There's a lot of corruption that exists in the national football, the National Football League. And so it came out a couple days ago that John Gruden is going to be fired, or it has to speak out for his racist and homophobic emails over ten years ago. And I shrugged my shoulders and I actually didn't know where this one was going to go. Because John Gruden signed a ten year 100 million dollar deal with the Oakland Raiders. And now so he technically resigned whatever he says, I have resigned as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. I love the Raiders and do not want to be distraction. Thank you to all the players coaches and staff and fan fans of raider nation. I'm sorry I never meant to hurt anyone, John Gruden. And so it was revealed in some of these emails. And based from what I've said, seen should have said something's probably not no, was he joking around in private in a context that none of us can understand? Yes. He incited Joe Biden, insulted Joe Biden I can't even say what he called Joe Biden on air. It's kind of hilarious. Called Roger Goodell, a certain name. I'm no fan of Roger Goodell. So if this whole thing is like a Roger Goodell, apology tour, but here's what really matters. Here's the question. In the National Football League, do they ever allow people to do bad things and continue to participate? Like murder. How about rate Ray Lewis and his legacy of the unsolved double murder? Or how about you remember this one? You remember ray rice, who literally punched his fiance in an elevator? It was an elevator, right? Which gained total notoriety following the indictment he was released by the ravens and suspended, and now rice would be reinstated after he successfully appealed the league's decision. And this whole thing with John Gruden is this question of should you be judged by things you have said in private ten years ago to destroy your current

Arizona Cardinals' Kliff Kingsbury on Hot Seat?

"All right my friend. We've covered three quarters of the national football league and we save kind of the best for last as far some of the most competitive divisions in the national football league so we may as well starting out in my neck of the woods relatively speaking with the arizona cardinals who find themselves pain as six to one hundred dollars to win the nfc west. This season their win. Total sits at eight and a half. You do have to lay a buck in a quarter if you wanna go. Under that total third season in the valley of the sun for cliff kingsbury last two years of tailed off in the latter. Half of the schedule. When you look at how this team performed. They lost six out of their final nine games. Second year in a row as we said they fallen apart down the stretch. Arizona elite league and penalties and you begin to worry about the decision making enga- management that oak liffey boy has shown since taking over last winning season for this franchise came back in two thousand fifteen where they were pummeled by the panthers in the playoffs but point differential last year plus forty three best amongst teams. That didn't finish with a winning record. Missed out a postseason berth. By virtue of a tiebreaker is the chicago bears edge. Them out schedule though starts all away from home where they'll play three or four on the highway to kick things off when you look at the arizona cardinals pain. We know it's all about the offense but they've also made some pretty good editions at least in my opinion on the defensive side as well arizona's tough for me to gauge. And it doesn't help that. They're playing in this division. Which is probably the most competitive and i don't really know i'm sold on kingsbury yet. And we've mentioned this number a couple times over the years but i think it's really interesting because it's mind blowing. You can get an nfl job with a resume like kingsbury. He was twenty three and forty at tack if you remove. Fcs opponents and kansas from his record. So it's really interesting from that

Bucks versus the Celtics. You've got Golden State versus Phoenix. You've got the Knicks versus the land and the Brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Lakers are the highlight game in the middle of that schedule. They very rarely get Christmas Day games wrong. When it comes to the NBA did very really get that wrong because even late at night, you may not be interesting those teams, but you're going to pay attention because nothing is going to be on. They're not trying to combat the National Football League on Christmas Day, but the N B A. They usually get it right on Christmas Day, And once again, they knocked it out of the

"Reports are out there going back to the National Football League. Shawn Watson, right now glorified practice safety for the Houston Texans. They didn't now say he's been dealing with ankle injuries. Wink, wink, nudge nudge. That's why had they have not been out their quarterback in any kind of practice that if it's Simmons I saw that maybe just maybe. The Single Most Important Thing to Do Before a Fantasy Draft

"Just want to go over a kinda some strategies. Things some tips and tricks that you guys do leading into drafts. I have a process that starts right after the nfl draft. And it's creating my own projections so a lot of that goes into that is what is target shared gonna be like what is yards per area. You're gonna be what is yards per completion gonna be to kind factor into making my own rankings and then i compare those to see if they are somewhat in line with you. Know a lot of my favorite experts some way off and i have valid reasoning for that so my process as it's okay to be way off on that because that's what i show But then like actually going into drafty kind of depends on where the draft is. site has different. Adp's if you really notice it. So sleeper espn yahoo. Every single one is gonna have somewhat different adp's so kind of get a feel of where players are falling in there. Doing some mock drafts to kind of see there and then determine my tears from there. Yeah you touched on everything. I was going to touch on. Tears is the most important thing for me. That's what i spent a lot of my my prep time doing when it comes to actual rankings like. Yeah i don't look at one specific citing say all right. This is the holy bible of fantasy football league off them. I tried to compile as much data as possible. I do a lot of my own projections in then. I kind of combine everything together. With where i think they're gonna fall but tears. Creating tears is the single most important thing heading into a fantasy draft

"Minority owners coming in at some point, but he is the he is the sole owner after buying back the minority shares from Dwight Schar, Fred Smith and Bob Rothman. And what was a very contentious uh, I think And this is that I don't know if it's been publicly put out like this, But I think it was a takeover attempt by the minority owners who were looking for a greater evaluation on on their sale of their minority piece, and all of this negativity started to pop up. In the Washington Post started to pop up and and social media. These accusations were thrown out there, all of which, incidentally, Dan Snyder has claimed responsibility for even though he was not directly implicated in any of those things. Um, And the news today is twofold. One that Daniel Snyder is it was fined $10 million. At least the Washington football team was fined $10 million. The clarity on that is that $10 million will go to charities, which which Tania, his wife and Dan will choose. So it's a $10 million fine, but it'll all go to an important cause. The other thing. That I think is not insignificant in this is that Dang Dwight Schar, who was one of those minority owners, and a lot of people believed was involved in the smear campaign on on Daniel Snyder has been banned for life. From the NFL. So, uh, while we while we want to vilified, um some of the things that went on inside the Washington organization, the the campaign It was put out to embarrass and try to force. Mr Snyder to Snell also came to light and again, I'll read it, I'll say it again. Dwight Schar, who was a minority owner, has been banned for life from the National Football League. As with many other events canceled due to the covid nineteen pandemic. there is no south by south west festival in austin texas. This year. That is true. But there's a virtual south by southwest going on online through saturday march twentieth. And i got a chance to participate. Let me tell you a little bit about it. I've been scheduled to moderate a panel last year gaming for good but the festival got cancelled entirely when we knew there was going to be a virtual festival this year the company that sponsored the panel skills decided to go ahead and do it so we recorded our discussion over zoom in late february and it was really enlightening and very made me very hopeful about things. Here there's a story. On tech usa today dot com. You can read that if you want. If you really wanna watch the panel and do all the other fun things at south by southwest. Has you can still buy a ticket to the festival. There's a link in my story for that too. But here's the basics. I learned from from the panel. The panelists we had three of them. there's a program called gamers outreach that provides video game carts that means it has like a secure tv and a game console on. It's it's either hook to wireless or however they do in the hospital in two hundred thirty children's hospitals around the us the founder zach. Weigel began the program when he was a high schooler halo tournament. That was quote corrupting the minds of america's youth in quote. The guy said so to show the gamers from it meant well the next year weigel try it again and raise money for a local children's hospital with that resulting tournament part of that he learned. The hospitals often have trouble keeping kids occupied when they're recovering from treatment in their rooms so that led him to begin having online fundraising to get these. Some Capitol Hill Lawmakers Back Amazon Workers' Attempt To Unionize

"Nearly six thousand amazon employees who work at a warehouse in bessemer alabama are voting by mail on whether to unionize. If they do this will be the first union amazon facility in this country. Here's jennifer bates. Who works there. I keep butterflies and butterflies. Normally come to calm me but hey this is my stomach faithful. It seems like it's getting bigger and bigger full of butterflies. Because there's no break in. Think i don't know how kogo nerve wracking. The election ends later. This month and i should mention. That amazon is a financial supporter of npr. But we cover them like any other company. Some lawmakers support the union. Including senator marco marco rubio or republican and of course president biden also michigan congressman andy levin earlier this month. He and a group of democrats traveled to bessemer. Good morning congressman. Good morning noel. How are you good thanks. What did amazon employees. They're tell you about why they want to unionize. Well you know a union election so often are about basic dignity and that was really true here. I was shocked to learn what it's really like in there They work in a facility. That's like fourteen football fields and it can take ten minutes to walk to a break room. They've to half hour breaks in a ten hour shift so they might get effectively ten hours to eat lunch be by the time they walk there and back lot of them. Don't feel like they can go to the bathroom. Except on their break. And they're watched and quantified every second they're monitored visually a listening geo positioning and every second they're not on task is measured and if they have a certain number of minutes off task in a week they could be fired sometimes might not even be a person involved it was really kind of dehumanizing to me. Here's the argument. That amazon makes amazon. Says look our employees. Earn fifteen dollars an hour which is a good wage in a place like bessemer alabama. Some of them have health benefits. 401k's essentially they have got the benefits that a union would get them. They don't need a union. What do you make of that argument. I'd like to tell that argument to any national football league player and the actor and a movie any presenter on major television or radio networks all of whom have a union every single one. The idea that unions are only for people who are the most poorly paid. It's ridiculous the one person who is unionized. That every airline is the pilot so this argument is ridiculous. These workers deserve a seat at the table to discuss a safe workplace. During a pandemic they deserve a seat at the table to have a workplace. That's human and a real person can go to and great make fifteen dollars. An hour amazon should pay them a lot more the owner of the company. The main owner had his wealth increase. Seventy eight billion dollars during a pandemic and they're about pay jeff bezos in their bag bragging about paying people fifteen dollars an hour there. What's wrong with workers having their own organization just that they can have input in their in in their work lives. And that's all these people are seeking is a seat at the table during this trip to alabama that you went on your colleague congressman jamaal. Bowman said this doesn't stop with amazon. He mentioned lift. Uber tesla and walmart as well. What is the ultimate goal here. The goal is for workers to be able to form a union and bargain collectively. If they darn well please. Noel were down to six percent of private sector workers in this country needing union. We're gonna pass the proactive in the congress and the president is going help. Lead into new era when workers can have a say at the table. It's long pastime in this country. Michigan congressman andy levin. Thank you

Wide Receivers Were the Order of the Day on Franchise Tag Day

"Today was tagged a in the National Football League. We found out stars that we're getting the franchise tag, which may preclude them from Changing teams, and we found out some players that didn't get the franchise tag. Wide receivers were the order of the day and Alan Robinson gets the franchise tag. Chris Godwin gets the franchise tag will have more on Godwin and Brady coming up in a few minutes because this is a really big deal. But now who do you go after right? Who's the number one wide receiver you go after, and The guy who was going to be the beneficiary of this. And look, we've talked about who the three best wide receivers were gonna be in free agency this year, right? You and I did this about a month ago, and it was Robinson and it was Godwin and it was Kenny Golladay. You got it? And I know that that some people are going to be a little nervous. About Golladay. Oh, he was hurt. Last year, he was on pace for his best year in 2020 until he got hurt. I am so in on Kenny Golladay. Getting hurt last year doesn't concern me. You know anytime, you miss games, whether it's zits calf or it's a hamstring. It's not that big a deal right? And it's not something where wait. There's a big injury and maybe they're not going to be as fast as they once were. It's not that big a deal. I go after Kenny Golladay because he is everything. That a team's gonna want in a wide receiver. He can be the big target in the red zone. He's someone is going to stretch the defense. He is terrific. Listen. Matthew Stafford has been blessed with good wide receivers and great wide receivers his time in Detroit before he got traded to Los Angeles and Kenny Golladay. Is that good? I mean, he's going to get paid and He's the big winner today with the other guy's getting franchised and Kenny Golladay is going to get a lot of money and rightfully so, because he is extremely talented. I love the kid. Congratulations to him. Not only will he get out of Detroit and whatever the next phase of their world is, but he's going to get a mountain of cash to do it.

Twitch's Recent Sports Properties Show Longterm Plan for the Platform

"On Sports properties and recently we've seen big moves towards that goal. I'm a dream since the Esports minute from E Sports Network, which is of course the home for Esports now will always be the platforms origination. But clearly the platform has been evolving firstly. There is a massive rise in just chatting as a category and in a lot more casual games and politicians using the platform. So there's that Evolution but there's also the evolution towards traditional Sports and we've seen this as well during the time when Twitches found Newfound competition, there are major leagues and major creators that are moving off platform over the last two years while the mixer experiment Network YouTube live has snatched up the CDL and o w l will also grabbing some big streamers in the process, but I honestly don't think twitch really cares that much they still are the dominant force in the mark. And command the largest audiences plus they have these grander plans. This isn't really a super controversial take twitch has been experimenting with more traditional sports events on the platform for the last few years. Most notably Thursday football games Coast trained with creators from the last few weeks two pieces of news have shown Twitches interest in traditional Sports and how it's continuing one was FIBA and the other was the kickoff of the fan control football game. Let's start with viva viva is the international basketball association the Federation dial international basketball amateur is where the FIBA acronym came from and now it's just the international basketball association today. They signed a multi-year deal with twitch people as far away from the NBA when it comes to viewership or relevance, but it does around the qualifying tournament for basketball at the Olympics as well as the bass World Cup and the World Cup and Hoops is definitely not the same as the World Cup in soccer, but it's still an important Sports property as part of the deal with twitch feeble broadcast 600 hours of basketball games on Twitch every year wage. Also be lighting up deals with Co streamers and creating more interactivity during broadcasts that interactivity is what twitch could offer and is also makes the fan control Football League pretty unique. The FCF is a new property that is not a few weeks on Twitch to pretty good viewership. It's cool because fans call the plays live during the game literally they vote on them and then the team runs them fans also have control over branding and player decision as well. The FCF utilizes Twitches ability for interactivity to basically play Madden in real life. Even Johnny Manziel is in the league for now. These are basically see tears Sports properties, but they show a month for twitch going forward the next time the meteorites come up for one of the major sports leagues Twitches definitely going to be having discussions. They've already cut in by having some of the NFL

S. championship but ended up losing the the Little League World Series championship came to Japan but it was fun to through at least feel like you're a part of it even in a small round back in two thousand and one a cherished childhood memory of getting shellacked district qualifier in Orlando Florida did you have orange slices at least at the end you get to go to the orange slices and a Gatorade the little music on the ride home after getting smacked by these kids look like they were twenty two years old when I was eleven eighteen.

"Seven G. M. as in the National Football League the move the NFL draft three years okay watch the tape yes we've inform you commissioner Roger Goodell's told teams around the league draft will go on as rigidly scheduled next month so it will take place April twenty third through the twenty fifth will be scaled down in televised in a way that reflects current conditions it was originally planned to be a big outdoor production in Las Vegas that softies in golf on the decision by the league to keep the draft where it is from a logistical standpoint from a due diligence standpoint from a tone deaf standpoint I don't see how this can go off without a hitch and we already know that it's a crapshoot as it is but we're not having those private workouts not having a chance for your doctors maybe to put hands on the whole guys or maybe get another medical report afterwards if you send somebody to another position because right now all physicians are under such stress and such strain because of his medical health crisis that we have right now anybody moving with any kind of certainty or absolute fox says to me that there's money on the line and there's deadlines that have to be met the goal of doing going will Kane on the idea that the NFL show must go on I think we have to make do do what we can to do our best and I Roger Goodell's right to move forward with the NFL draft because postponing it begs the question of until when what are we gonna be out of this when we got to get back to normalcy when can John Elway go interview players I don't have the answer to that I don't think doctor felt she has the answer to that I don't think anybody has the answer to that just yet if you don't have an answer that you have to make do from Harlem world since free agency started I bother certainly been some I haven't seen a lot of kickback it's everywhere all little nervous of what are people going to think out there guys are signing these big deals in again in our world where a lot of times the big machine of the NFL can get ripped for not doing things socially right I haven't seen a lot of that so I I do think people are enjoying it again in the in the sports world and I and I do think people enjoy the dry the worst of the pandemic is probably still about fifteen days away right and then it's how do we deal with that and that would put us literally eight nine ten days before the start of the draft and there might be a different dynamic there but at this point I think the idea of the NFL going for from a public from a sports fans rushed back right let's be clear I think people are somewhat comfortable with that again this is a by product the New World War now in player physicals not exactly ideal for NFL teams who haven't been able to get the players their facilities to after agreeing to deals one such example the ravens and Michael Brockers the defensive tackle well he's now not heading to Baltimore instead and heading back to the rams two sides did reach an agreement last week on a three year deal rockers couldn't take it a physical at their facility openly did so with an independent doctor concerns arose over a lingering ankle injury two sides couldn't come to terms on an amended deal so he's back to LA for three season cowboys come to terms on deals with kicker Greg Zuerlein and defensive tackle Dontari Poe's airline gets three or seven point five million PO two seasons at ten point five signing in education Dallas is looking to get bigger on that front line speaking of boys.

"Day I have a rules suggestion for the National Football League my suggestion is that anytime defense and this is this is gonna sound so anti foreign to me but it just it you know I don't need it in my life anymore so I'm fine with say this and and be in this this this fuddy Duddy defensive players who take the ball back any amount of yards greater than ten when the play is over like Chris Jones just rip the ball out of Ryan Tannehill's hands as he was laying on the ground to try to pretend like I was a fumble five yard penalty next time you get the ball back you know like not not like right there like I don't need it's like older games or anything but like next time your team gets the ball five your penalty so stop pretending it's a turnover we all know it's not a turnover coal through correct so check it all and know what's going on in Kansas city here's a hint they go great for Tennessee as they just had to put the ball yeah together down eleven does not feel like there's gonna be a ton of scoring here in the second half we just got seven points on the board for the chiefs seven more would likely push this thing out of how to Tennessee's grass peer they've been eighteen point lead everybody stuff to overcome for the Tennessee Titans the kids the chiefs are gonna be all tough to overcome for the foreseeable future in the AFC west I don't envy the situation that the Broncos that the Chargers or the raiders are in going forward now all those teams will still make money in all those teams will have an opportunity to make the playoffs with the wild card but as long as my homes plays fourteen or more games you're not winning the AFC west anytime soon so tough to be at the Denver fans off to be a Chargers fan right never been tougher to be charged in the right now A. in tough to be a writer Stan going forward although it's looking up for the raiders you're holding city to get excited about you but it could get real tough for the Chargers going forward and if you don't think the timing of this is important if you don't think the timing of this says something well I can't help you Philip rivers texted Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen this morning to explain that he's permanently moving his family out of San Diego so their Florida home to be closer to his family and what I assume is also his wife's family now I want you to think for a second all hard it is for Philip rivers to move his family's got forty eight kids okay they lived in San Diego since he got drafted and that's so I'm assuming we're most those kids were bored I'm assuming that's where most of them have spent the majority of their life going to school so think about how interesting and tough that is for Philip rivers rivers is picking up a very large family who is had its roots firmly planted in San Diego he's picked let family up and he's moving them all the way across the nation to Florida that's worth noting rivers was not a fan of the move from San Diego to LA by the Chargers so much so that he could move his family to LA reverse commute he had a specialized bus that allowed him to watch film be entertained things of that nature wall he spent the you know ninety minutes two hours getting to the facility of the ninety minutes to hours getting back from the facility think about that all of us have some sort of commute those live at work to work from home you know it's you're the exception always have some sort of commute N. big Philly got no call her every day for the better part of a couple years the now big Philly eight a charger anymore if you don't live in California anymore seems like Philip rivers is done with the Chargers the charges are done with Philip rivers too but that's going to be a changing of the guard now the Chargers have Tyrod Taylor in a top ten pick so I'm assuming the Chargers left Tyrod Taylor the quarterback or their team here pretty soon from the draft maybe in free agency thank you get interested in right here on the hill Jameis Winston teddy Bridgewater Marcus Mariota our deals guys really guaranteed to be better than Tyrod Taylor no it's better to draft somebody in and for the next full of rivers the Chargers we'll talk about them a little bit later on I know Tom Brady is not going to go play for the freaking Chargers but Philip rivers don't feel like he's done it doesn't feel like a guy that would be that bad of an option if you're one of these teams looking to maybe just get over the hump take the next step if you had a team of the recorder back I really like borderline whole Famers being mercenaries that's a scenario that's a situation I like to find myself in as a football team when I'm hiring a guy to come play for I like mercenaries because mercenaries from the quarterback spot are there to take care of themselves and make themselves look good well the quarterback is gonna look good Lou we can we can out everybody's will look good we can and we get out so you start thinking about these different teams here especially the teams in Florida now Jacksonville seems out of the question they've got falls on the roster and they drafted Gardner made sure those two will battle it out Miami seems likely to end up with a rookie that they want to throw in there right away or a rookie that will sit learned from Ryan Tannehill well there's a fourteen an old and grumpy but competitive seems like it would probably love old and grumpy and competitive tend to feel like a move to Florida setting up Philip rivers as Bruce Ariens is next quarterback rivers is a free agent Seamus Winston's a free agent and resilience needs a quarterback so do I go with Janus who through thirty interceptions where do I go with Philip rivers babies a slow starter what is a potential favor.

"The proceedings we hope you had a safe eighth and festive holiday season and that you're geared up for another fun filled adventurous Year in what we like to sort of delve delve into that Being things defunct in previously domiciled and located in the realm of professional sports in this week is absolutely no exception option. We welcome our guest to the proceedings in our microphones. This week Michael Hugue. who was the original? And I think frankly only although it might be a little old debatable at the League's sort of last month's of the United Football League and yes you could be forgiven for not knowing or remembering the the NFL. The United Football League not the World Football League not the United States. Football League the UFL the United Football League that was a a brief blip on the pro football landscape That kind of sort of Fun for too long for a couple years. Two thousand nine to two thousand twelve If you were paying attention never really got more than five teams in the League but if you remember teams like the California redwoods where the New York sentinels The Las Vegas locos does Let's see the Omaha city or the Omaha nighthawks were very popular team in the NFL. Let's see the Sacramento Mountain. Ten Lions the Virginia destroyers which started their original lies as the as the Florida tuskers and whole fascinating set of stories around the Four or so seasons of this thing called the United Football League which we're going to get into with our guest this week Michael Hugh. It's a fascinating tale ad. It's wrapped wrapped up in a lot of intrigue as well as some expectations. If you SORTA dial it back to Two thousand seven or so when the UFL Kinda that SORTA got going Masters Bill Hambrecht of of venture capital out in California a Tim Armstrong of AOL and previously Google fame. Up Mark. Cuban was rumored to be part of this. Nancy Pelosi's Yes Sir are A. US House of Representatives Leader leader her husband was part of the original mix as well this. These are people sort of looking around at yet yet. Again pro football and perhaps why maybe the NFL hadn't Maybe expanded and a whole bunch of years and frankly around twenty eight twenty nine Some perhaps in certain circles expectations that the National Football League might wind up. Seeing it's players go on strike or the owners locking out the players or some some form or fashion of that and the thinking was Paul Pelosi. Nancy Pelosi's does your husband Speaker of the House. Nancy Pelosi t boone. Pickens was in the mix as well. These are all people either rumored or actually involved financially in starting this UFL United Football League with the thought that perhaps not unlike some other league expectations to especially around the NFL NFL of perhaps player. Strife that would might come in the big league the National Football League and and if that were to have occurred in the latter part of the of the. What's the thinking was that this UFL this fledgling United Football League might be the only thing in town the only game in town pro football wise perhaps APPs could indeed sop up some of the The Forlorn Nano players but also certainly fans that might be missing the NFL. Of course all of that never really panned out. But it still didn't stop the UFL from giving a go with some some major Nimes Especially in the coaching. Greg's talking about a people like Dennis Green and Doug Williams was in the mix you had people like like Jim has let in the mix you had You know a whole bunch of a Jim Fossil These are players coaches Leeann. A lot of players who had a couple of cups of coffee in the National Football League and and again. This is a story that we've heard over and over again. We talk about things like the world football league in the USFL and and things like nfl you rope by and The World League of American football these are you know it's either players on the way up young players that for whatever for reasons Got Their cups of coffee and various. NFL training camps or got caught or Shortened by injury and wanted to make the comeback Perhaps players here's that had some glory years and felt that they had a few things few games a few seasons left in the tank. Shake that vigorously folks You know look and maybe to get back into the show of the NFL. These are all sort of The stories not only of the players but the coaches administrators as well and and as we've talked about many many times Plenty of Appro football caliber quality folks out there on all levels whether they'd be on the coaching or the management or certainly the player ranks thanks. We're going to see it again in the XFL in a couple of weeks We thought we were going to see it with the Alliance of American football but again you know the football was probably not the problem with the AF but there are plenty of players and plenty of. Aspire it's ready to sort of buckle up and get into the game and and continue were were were pursue further a professional national career and and The again in the late two thousands early to Twenty tens was absolutely part of that mixture. And we're going to get into that with the original and long time. I think the only frankly commissioner of the NFL Michael Hugh who himself was is instill still is pro football management renegade. He was part of the World League of American Football He management to a person within the Detroit Lions Organization and was Drafted into this UFL by the folks like Bill Hambrecht and And Tim Armstrong and Paul Pelosi and some of the other money folks behind kindness and we're going through the ups and largely down and sideways of the United Football League. Coming right up with Michael Hugh I in just a couple of moments. This is fascinating acid stuff. That's the reason why we live. The reason why exist on the show that we invite you to stay tune in and maybe gear up for for some of it by a couple of purchases with some of our great sponsors. Why don't you want to keep the show going and all these kinds of great stories that we left on earth three each and every week?.

I think you know the absolute you know there's a lot of people that look like you're getting what I was planning you know they felt like they were going in different directions they once they weren't representing the players but truly I I think the union does represent players are specially in in situations like this they provide a lawyer I you know if you go in front of the basically the management of the National Football League and which is the commissioner and all the other decisions that they occupy in the front office and you know it in what happens is you literally sit down I don't say it in a large meeting room which is that the table probably can see thirty people so when you're sitting in one of the commissioners is sitting at the other yeah it feels like you know you're getting your final sentence and but what happens is they present evidence and the evidence is the video of the game or something else that you've done either off the field and are you watch and sit there and there's attorneys are along with the commissioner and a lot of other people that are part of the National Football League and they make accusations why did you do this and in the case of a particular play bass wall the film down to the point where you think you've got plenty of time to make decisions you know you're running up there and be just before the contact they slow down so it makes it looks like it like you're walking in the park you know like you got you know several minutes to make a decision on how you want to do this not realizing that that is the way it happens everything is bang bang and what I mean by that is the players are so big and strong and fast now that when these situations occur for the most part they are so quick and you know moving your head around the state not to have the helmet to helmet contact is ridiculous because it doesn't take into effect if you're defender what the often if the player is going to do and you know so many times the offense player actually dogs who. head and they're the ones that are creating the helmet to helmet hit but you know I I do think that you know with with with his continued infractions over a period of time I think you have a cell is getting more and more just in a demand that this behavior will not. it will not continue and they'll they'll do whatever it takes to stanchions find other things that'll just delay or eliminated behavior. take.

"The highest level in the National Football League so to do something like this and have you know the the the white Sox in the cryo chamber and the homeless situation but the biggest takeaway from me is that no throughout all of this right all the things that are going on he hasn't had time to develop a relationship in the chemistry with his quarterback because he hasn't been there and that's the biggest thing for me this is in a situation like in Pittsburgh where he has familiarity with Ben Roethlisberger he understands the timing already they've been together for years this isn't that he's going to a new situation a new team with a new quarterback that he have to develop that same type of chemistry if you want to be successful with this team and he hasn't been out there due to these injuries in these things that we've that we've already mentioned so that's the part that kind of shocks me about all of this Antonio brown knows what it takes to compete at the highest level and to be successful and I think as of right now he's kind of taking a step back in that learning curve at least with the Oakland Raiders thing greater France including the one in my left and Jason fits a just because in their eyes and waiting for him to get on the field because when he gets on the feel great things can happen all the other stuff around it so we know Zeke's going to get a deal we know it certainly dak Prescott it's going to get a deal an antique holding out going to get the deal Melvin Gordon with the Chargers Victor two guys supposed to make five point six million this year is getting fined thirty grand today he can be find an actual regular season game check for missing preseason game so he can lose a lot of money if in fact they do accept the fines and it's a guy in my opinion Victor who is not going to win this so if your him or in his camp at what point do you have to draw that line and say you know what this isn't happening I don't have the leverage I need to get back I think you got to have a real conversation with yourself and your agents and your team and just understand where you are and have a real look in that mirror of where you are as an athlete where you are contractually and then have a meeting with your agent and say Hey what how realistic is it for me to get an extension our our new deal how realistic is it because I'm losing thirty granite bay here that I don't have it and that I'm banking on getting a new contract so that doesn't hurt me as much as it should so I think he just has to have that real conversation with himself and understand where he is individually at at and just figure out what it takes to be you know the the level of caliber player that he is is is next level and but he has to have that real conversation with himself and with his team to to put a date on when he can get back when he wants to get back and when he has the humble seven get back in their playful do you think that day to be now do you think you should be gone back I think you should be going back I think that the way this the the way his hold out is I I just think he doesn't have any leverage I I think the way he's going into this whole dot I think obviously the leverage is what he's done on the football field is compare bulls but in terms of the contract in terms of the way that the charges are looking at him I just don't think he has enough leverage to hold out throughout the season pictures of this Michelle Pennzoil performance I'm Victor the NFL just announced a partnership with Jay Z. and roc nation gonna collaborate certainly on the entertainment portion of the product Superbowl halftime shows some other music ventures but they also mentioned this idea of going out and doing work in the community like that we've seen the NFL starting to commit to a little bit more the social justice issues that come with the leave what did you make of it when you saw this in specifically that portion of it explained with the NFL and someone from the outside like JZ I love the I I think it's the perfect marriage between between two brands that can come together really get this thing right for the NFL and and come to speak the language of what's out there in the music industry in entertainment and nothing is going to take with the biggest thing is like social reform and different things that are kind of outside the scope of the NFL so that they can have someone that understands the culture of what the NFL live they understand the culture of the type of fans and people that watch the NFL and what they want to listen to what they want to hear and what they want to see the NFL doing in the community that makes people sit back and say Hey they're they're really work and they're figuring it out there not just sitting back and letting other people do it they're creating unions in partnerships with organizations and companies like roc nation that understand what it takes and what it and understand exactly how to shake things out and and put people in the right place for success and I think the NFL sees they see that in themselves they need someone to come in and help them with this and I think roc nation and Jay Z. specifically are the perfect part you guys can follow him on Twitter at team Vic Victor Cruz as always we appreciate your time and thanks for joining no longer thing from coming up next the.

"Figured it's, it's time that we kid kinda focus dedicate some hours to focusing on the National Football League. And you know what was done in the draft? What kind of season are you coming off from a year ago? What are your prospects going forward? Is this an all type season? Are you working with the new head coach are you establishing direction or has a direction already been established, and it's time to put up or shut up? You need to make the playoffs in the National Football League in order to preserve jobs, and I'm not I'm not saying age. I'm not saying the job of the head coach or the job of any particular player, I've talking multiple jobs, because we based decisions based on results and decisions are made not only based on results based on promise as well. And you could see how teams behave how they evaluate their own team. You know, if you make minimal adjustments. You'll one of two things is happening, you're either getting ready to unload, so that you can rebuild or you feel like you can go forward with the team. You have, and Bs competitive is you can be without maybe breaking the Bank to sign that free agent. And when it is time to break, the Bank, maybe it's time that you already. We have seen these things all play out for my hometown team. The Cleveland football Browns. We've not been relevant in a long time. And let's not treat them as a team as an organization that aids existed since stiking forty six for the sake of the state of the team. We are talking only recent history only and we cannot go back farther than when the Browns were expanded into the league in one thousand nine hundred nine there's really very little point in even going that far back. Let's just kind of focus on getting to where we're at right now. Cleveland Browns coming your way this hour. My name's Jeff rich coming to your from Phoenix Arizona, we're doing this one for the troops out there listing on the American forces network. This is the sports byline broadcast. I work, and we'll be right back..

"Football League. I don't even know what to say airlines completely lost every sense of humanity. Have you heard the story about spirit airlines, the the mom and the son and the daughter flying and spirit less you pay for seed assignments? You could end up spread apart. So the daughter ends up. Fifteen year old is up in front of the plane. The mom sign end up in the back, and they're halfway to their destination. When the mom goes up to talk to the daughter daughter's not there and his cavalierly told by flight attendant, we were oversold. We put your daughter off in Tampa. And that's the first the mom knew. I mean, panic beyond belief the daughter allegedly tried to talk the mom, they said, no you have to find right now. You can't go talk to your mom. Nobody went back to tell the mom spirits being sued. And they say it's our practice. Not comment on pending litigation. Now, that's ridiculous is a statement. And then we've got the Australia virgin Australia that stranded and nine year old unaccompanied nine year old when a flight had to divert and when they put people on other planes, the kid had no status with the airlines. They left him there behind and left him and unstaffed wasn't a storage room. Although it looks like it was some kind of supposedly lounge and left the kid there overnight. I mean, what is going on? I know that airlines are busy. I know they see so many passengers every day. And I know that airlines teach their employees that only people who pay big money and have special status matter, but that is ridiculous and being human and humane is so important. I don't know what we need to do. Because the answers I hate for the idea the answer to be big government passes, some kind of regulation. There's a law a rules, but we had to do that. Because of airlines leaving people on planes, endless hours. And that's when the tarmac delay rule was put into effect, and then airlines screamed and yelled, and it turned out they were able easily to comply, and it's very rare anymore that passengers are left stranded on a plane more than three hours today. Why even three hours, but this is simple. Just treat people with respect and dignity and treat them, right? Why don't you? What if the kid who cut your grass worked like most financial advisers instead of a straight up twenty bucks, you get some confusing Bill with surcharges and add-ons? What the heck is a blade height adjustment. Creative..

"Thanks for Megan. Anthony, appreciate it. I would not want to give out a ten year contract. Now, I do think that there are certain circumstances. Look if you believe that a guy could be a final peace pretty good one World Series. And then give you look at Bryce Harper Machado. If you're ever going to give out a long term deal. One of those two guys would maybe fit the mold for that. Because of their age during the prime of their careers, solid. You're paying for a guy that's past his prime. These guys are both in their prime. Now, you know that it's not going to be you're not gonna get great production all ten years. And that's why teams are hesitant to do this. There's going to be a lot of wasted money in that deal. But you figure if you get seven of them, it's a great deal. Usually, that's how it works. Colin is in beacon. What's up calling? Hey, I'm just calling to see what you think about this AFL, or whatever the hell it is. I don't think anything of it. I didn't I didn't watch. It football season's over to me. I'm an NFL football fan. I call me. We got more football going on it. I'm interested in that's on trying to see what's going on with you guys. I I'm not interested. Thanks gone. I'm not interested in not diminishing the product. I don't know anything about the product. I mean, I know very little about it. I don't care to know about it. There's one football league National Football League. I mean, obviously outside of college sports. We're talking about the National Football League. I don't honestly, I don't have the time to watch this. I mean, what are you guys kidding me? You know, how hard you must be single. I mean producer p do you get into this? Af did you watch this weekend? And all no, not close. Casey Mukasey, the board op did you get into it. Get into it. But we just had it on here last night. Just have something on TV. If you hear that's different if you're at work having and on look. Yeah. I don't know how somebody could justify if you actually have a functioning life football season is a grind Saturday Sunday for how many weeks throughout the course of the fall from September to February. There's no way you could justify your wife. Hey, Honey is more football on. It's the af. And I gotta watch Christian hackenberg under center tonight. Can't do it now and must be serious come on sale. You have a professional league with the best best. These guys couldn't make the cut. They were teams. And now you're gonna watch that in like, this is good football. I I just can't I don't agree with and I don't want to say that. It's not good football. But producer Pete brings up a great point. I mean, chances are it's not I can't say that. It's not because they didn't watch it. So before Jimmy as well, it's a horrible product. I didn't watch it. I don't care to watch it. But I'd have to think any league with Christian. Hackenberg is a quarterback in. It's not going to be very good at you wanna have young guys developing hungry players. Maybe there's something to watch for it. Look if I'm home with absolutely nothing to do. Maybe I'll watch it. But you think I'm watching the af over an NHL hockey game or an NBA basketball game or college basketball game not happening. Not happening. Football season is over. You wanna go bed on the af I took a beating enough during the college during the regular football season. I need a break from the gambling eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six. We'll talk more baseball John Harper. My good buddy, you could catch S N Y. Formerly obviously, the new York Daily News writing all about the Mets and the Yanks. We'll talk some baseball with John Harper on the other side it Sal licata on the fan. "Is a Black John Lynch or black Mike Mayock even possible? No experience. Not none. None. And you're the general manages the general managers. Do you know how many minority candidates have toil? Through the National Football League for decades. They'd be happy. If they would just the scout. Because the opportunities are so scares. You would think that in our day and age that there would be people that were at least have the decency to say there is a process that should be honored and followed. If no other reason than appearances upticks. But do folks care. No. But we wanna talk about fairness. I live this every day. Ladies, gentlemen. Watching one person after another after another no disrespect to them whatsoever. But have clearly been elevated and place in to a position of influence and power with no credentials whatsoever. That validates them earning the opportunity. I am not saying that John Lynch would not do a good job. I am not saying that Mike Mayock won't do an outstanding job. What I am saying is there is something to be said about you being granted the opportunity. Opportunities. That would never be afforded. So minority. But we move forward in two thousand nineteen. We will be on all of this. All right. Sure..
