"foodline" Discussed on Let's Talk Dementia
"They speak veterans so you don't have to. It's a good thing because it's complicated language so i had someone right me and ask about constipation and dementia ooh. That's a dirty subject isn't it well pooping. You know we just don't wanna talk about out. Pooping impolite company like we all don't poop will if you don't you got a problem in that problem really does become intensified when we have dementia so the question is why does it happen. Why does it make dementia worsened actually very good question if you are working with or caring for the <hes> a. l. o. a loved one or maybe you're a paid caregiver but you love that person anyway and they suddenly seem to have taken a big downturn learn. That may be exactly what happened there. Dementia may have advanced in. You got a new level of issues there or it could be. There's another issue going on a more physical physical issue. Sometimes they're able to tell you. I don't think i've put a year that is the exact are my grandmother used. I love of the story when she spoke one day. In my grandmother lived with my aunt in <hes> both ladies have faith my grandmother raised children who went on to serve the lord lord and <hes> very proud of her for doing that but grandma quit speaking she just became nonverbal in my aunt prayed lord. Please just let me hear the mother's voice one more time letter. Speak to me one day at the dinner table. My grandmother spoke up and said evelyn. I haven't haven't pooped in a year but she didn't say poop y'all no she didn't she said the s h._r. Which my grandmother would never in a million years have said but she did hit my aunt about rolled in the floor laughing <hes> but wasn't true grandma had actually pooped recently but in her mind she hasn't but actually hadn't but many times our folks are able to say. I think i need to go the bathroom and i can't <hes> my belly hurts or my head hurts. They're able to express to you what's going on physically physically but as dementia progresses our folks are not able to express their thoughts. They may try. They may get a few words out in you may not be able oh to interpret those words so you have to look for non verbal cues the example i gave you. I had a client that i worked with. We did music with her her. She was blind. Play the harmonica like nobody's business. It was so much fun we could play music together but on a particular visit she was beating her belly just as hard as she could beat it and <hes> i went to the staff and i said you know what's going on. She's she's taken her fist in beating at her lower abdomen. They said she's he's constipated more training her for that every time she gets constipated that how she lets us know that the problem so you do look for non verbal clues who's in sometimes as nonverbal clues will look like at the dementia has gotten worse and you gotta think about with constipation in your own sale. When you get constipated your head or heart massage your belly heart makes cramp but your head will hurt. It can cause you to be agitated. Just an overall feeling kinda like heaven the flu. It's a bad feeling to be constipated and that is true with dementia also so we you know that the the bowel backs up up in the end. You've got all these toxins that are being released. It's just not a good thing so we want to be aware of when our loved ones to put and if you're caregiving at home it's it's kinda smart just to keep a log. Maybe gallo piece of paper in the bathroom jordan every time you know they might do a poopie. You're going to write it down and then when you realize it's been three days and you haven't written anything down. Oh my goodness um. We might need to do something about it because i don't care how good of a caregiver you are and how how intent on doing the best job you can do. You may forget to notice if they haven't pooped in a couple of days so if you are writing it down just putting a little tick mark in it says august fourteenth check august fifteenth. Jack went to times then when there's nothing for few days you can go back to august. It's been three days a funny thing with my mom while she was still able to do so. I took a piece of paper and hooked it to a piece of yarn hooked hook to a pin taped to the grab bar by her toilet and the piece of paper said veras publicity sep y'all it didn't say put put no it did not and everytime mom had approach put a check mark there and <hes> it helped me be able to keep track of his mama was current on using the the bathroom is important. We've got to put you can either accept it or not. You can address it or not but you gonna need to one of the things that can cause dementia in in any of us and especially someone with dementia is dehydration and dehydration is just a bad thing it can keep you from thinking clearly in the ad dementia or not and if you have mentioned become dehydrated. You really can't think clearly it will calls dementia to be worse. It'll cause constipation which constipation causes dementia dementia be worse. Do you see how dehydration is a problem. So what you wanna do is keep by them beside their chair beside their bad sitting on the counter or wherever they are a mug that they can hold not a glass that they've got their their hands around that doesn't work a mug with a handle and a straw strauss house. It's proven that if you drink with the straw drink more than if you drink without a straw do you wanna put a strong input their favorite liquid now. I am not a proponent of soft drinks. I i am not you do not need to drink them. They do not need to be in your home. They do not need to be in your car and they do not need to be purchased at restaurants since i am i am a sounds like a dr seuss. Thing doesn't don't don't drink soft drinks. Here's my caveat when my mother was in her last three months of her life we we should've unstocked in foodline orange soda because it was the only thing we could get my mama to drink now under my mama was dying and i knew that if she didn't drink that she would die sooner so you can bet your sweet baby i bought orange <unk> foodline orange soda by the truckload and she would drink it every we day when she had her first sip she'd go oh mercy. It is so good like she never had it before. I love thinking about that. A sorta kinda ms bein two liter bottles of foodline or soda so keep that in mind do keep them hydrated well that gives you some things to think about. I have the little cartoon that has this <hes>. I don't know what he what he is this little creature and he says i eight four cans of affable bet soup deep and just took probably the biggest vowel movement ever via w. e. l. alphabet soup. Get it in that cute. I thought that was kinda. Funny the muppet. That's what he is well. That gives you something to think about. Reports that all the is so popular that it has its own fan blog and a Facebook group with get this fifty thousand members why. Because for many price matters more than service, especially if you can get low prices without sacrificing quality. It's a particularly challenging time in the grocery business with Amazon, having bought ho foods, two years ago, some of the challenges inspired by all the itself, which is expanding aggressively in the US over the next year it plans to open one hundred thirty new stores, and they expect to have twenty five hundred stores in America by twenty twenty two which would make it the third largest grocer in the nation right behind WalMart and Kroger. And as it grows all these ability to keep prices, all tr- low, think ninety nine cents for a gallon of milk. It's forcing WalMart to cut its prices. That's saying something in July twenty seventeen a basket of forty common groceries cost about fifty six dollars at Aldy about twelve dollars less. S then at WalMart CNN reports that WalMart has since lowered some of those prices to shrink that competitive gap. So what's a competitor to do? It's not easy to satisfy everybody all the time, WalMart sales jumped higher this quarter is customers embraced online shopping an in store pickup, adding more service in contrast to all these do it yourself economy model and WalMart, along with other major grocers, like Kroger and delays, which owns Hannaford and foodline have one thing going for them. That Alday doesn't choice you see in a typical store all the offers only about fourteen hundred products. Most of them private-label, that's a tiny fraction of the one hundred thousand items on the shelves at a WalMart. Supercenter CNN says sure price matters, and while all the does pose a threat to WalMart. It's hardly busting the mammoth chains business just yet in twenty eighteen all these US sales, topped sixteen billion dollars. It higher than whole foods, but nowhere close to WalMart sales of more than five hundred billion dollars at those volumes. Walmart can afford to cut some prices and bag your groceries for you. "Let's not very what's most important America. Everyone is talking about the smirk heard round the world you saw this kid this week. Remember this? Yesterday. This kid should have done when everyone does during a drum solo leave. I mean, I don't spend a lot of time. I must tell you around Catholic school children. But I do not get what Catholic priest. See these kids. Your media decided these white privilege students, wearing mega hats were a bigger story than a the eight hundred thousand government workers on in foodline, thanks to MacDonald Trump's shutdown which by the way, should eliminate any further discussion about him being even a decent negotiator. Let alone the best one. He is the worst and be the ongoing existential threat to our democracy posed by Donald Trump, and of course, all the brain dead. Trump bounce back completely into it and became instantly enraged over both of these stories remember James Shaw, the guy who disarmed the gunman was who was armed with an AR fifteen rifle during the Nashville waffle house shooting last year saving lives as a result James Shaw to this day has never received an invitation from Donald Trump to visit the White House. But guess who already has received one? Yup. The smirking sneering student from Covington Catholic high who's become the smug face of this story, Nick Sandman. But then again, Nick, San man, whose only purpose this week was to serve as a colossal distraction from the crimes of Donald Trump is white James Shaw. A genuine American hero is black. And they know that they that we have a job. They believe strongly in the mission was the mission to protect America's borders. And they know that we have a job to do. See Nancy Pelosi that wasn't her take on it. Nancy Pelosi you here we have border patrol doing the job not calling in sick dot they're doing their job. They're not talking about all I got to sleep with my car all guys rival bird night. They're doing their job knowing that wants this overdue. They'll get back pay but Nancy Pelosi. She played this pitch. Perfect barrage. Saying he doesn't understand why. When he was asked about people and client foodline pantries and the rest, he says he doesn't understand why they had to do that. Any kind of attitude or call your father? Character building for you with all the end up very well just as long as you don't get your paychecks. I don't understand quite understand. Cooperate with the negotiate with the president on the border wall. Did they wouldn't be going with without their second? Check. This is the mazing. "You're listening to this show is cooking on WBZ. Welcome back to the show is cooking. My name is Brett Jensen coming in from the WBZ newsroom. Filling in for Charles Jenkin in the next couple of weeks or so as he recovers from shoulder surgery. So, but he'll be returning so fret not. All right. So barbecue let's get into barbecue. Last week. I I took Charlotte to task about just the lack of quality pizza in Charlotte for the longest time. There's okay places in Charlotte for pizza, but there was never really an exceptional place to go for in child for pizza like there are a lot of fine places. But I think Hawthorne and. Are by far the two best places in Charlotte for pizza that being said it's now time for barbecue. And as I said earlier, I don't understand how a place like Charlotte. Decades upon decades upon decades with just lousy barbecue. Lousy. And and again, you are. Oh, what what are you know? Oh, I'll tell you. What? I know. I've lived here since nineteen Seventy-three. All right. I've moved here when I was five years old. So I'm going to tell you like seriously Charlotte is right in the perfect location for having the best barbecue on the planet. You're right on the South Carolina border where they do the mustard sauce. You're right there and the edge of western North Carolina where they do the thick rich red barbecue sauce, and you're really close to the east where they do the eastern vinegar in style and not far from Lexington barbecue in bridges barbecue and Shelby and all these places. Let me tell you something. Ours barbecue gastonia good God. Like, I'm not a big fan of their pulled, pork. But there's sliced barbecue sandwiches and the best and I hate slow, and they by far the best barbecue Slaw I've ever had you can actually use it as a dip. You could actually go to Bilo foodline stuff places like that it and it's great for like a vegetable dip instead ranch dressing ridiculous ridiculous. So it was like a puree. But let's get into some of these places. Now, again, your doger's someone who has Indian restaurants, the overwhelming majority of his life and has lived down south since nineteen Seventy-three minus about a year or so you're and a half up in New Jersey at my dad's running his restaurants. So I know a little bit about restaurants. All right. So here we go. The best pulled pork. In charlotte. Because no one place is the best at everything. It doesn't matter. What your restaurant is? As a matter. If you do a chicken doesn't matter if you do a steak seafood, some places will have the best always and other places. We'll have the best grouper. I mean, that's just the way it is. So the best pulled pork in Charlotte. And I have eaten at every place that you could possibly imagine looking for good barbecue. And it's been around for about five years now, and it's saucepans barbecue right there in Southend right off Tryon near the corner of eastern trial saucepans barbecue. I think is the best polled and chopped pork and shot. Coming in a close. Second is Jimmy Knicks down there and the Ballantyne area down like Indian land and stuff like that. Jimmy Knicks really solid really sought now. So we got the pork off out of the way the rips. I don't even think this is the category where I think there is the. Biggest discrepancy. The ribs at sweet lose in Noda. Holy moly. Holy moly. And they've only been around for a few months. And it is the wrestler step is fine. But their ribs. If you want ribs Goto sweet lose L, E W S. I'm telling you it's damn near life changing. All right. So we got the ribs out of the way barbecue chicken. I love a good grilled barbecued chicken. Queen city q. Uptown, charlotte. They also do there at the Charlotte knights games. Green city. You has. I think the best barbecue chicken because they use the mustard based sauce from South Carolina on their barbecue chicken. I don't like it in their poll, pork, I don't like it any other places, and they offer the vinegar in the red sauces and all that other stuff as well. But their barbecue chicken, good Lord. It is it's ridiculous. Every time I've gone there. I always get the barbecue chicken because I've tried all their other stuff because I used to do a radio show from there once a week when I was at WFAN Z. The barbecue chicken. They're outstanding. The brisket. By a mile Midwood smoke house. Midwood smoke house. Now, do they offer you the brisket? But they all off you the chance for just the burnt ends with the brisket. I'm telling you. I know you're getting the reaction here in the studio. The brisket at Midwood smoke house. It used to be just unsearchable than they opened one up. Also right beside me at near Parker shopping center ridiculous. All right. I think the best sauce. It's almost a combination of the red sauce and the vinegar sauce. So instead of the thick thick Tangy barbecue sauce and the very light in watery vinegar sauce. This is like a mixture. Jimmy Knicks Jim as the sauce. I I highly recommend you just go by as much of that sausage. Can't what Midwood smoke house has really good sauce salsa. I will say that would smoke house if you can't get down to Indian land for Jim Knicks Midwood smoke house. The sides. I think the best sides. Queen city Q has the best baked beans around. Oh, they're just baked beans. Yeah. Really how many other places do, you know, the put nieces sausage in their baked beans. Nieces sausage out of Shelby, we all know that nieces sausage is by far the best sausage around. We all know that you can get that Jimmy dean stuff out of here, nieces sausage. Yes. Right. They put nieces sausage in their baked beans. Midwood smoke house. They do a lot of things very well as well for their sides. There. Hush puppies. It's it's seriously. We'll settle joker. It'll make you want to slap your, mama. Their hush puppies. So overall, though overall so you. That you got the ribs sweet lose in Noda. You got the chicken a Queen city. Q? You got the brisket has mid what smoke house, you get the port pulled, pork. Which is a sauce mints here in south end as well. As Jim index done Indian land the sides Queen city Q in Midwood the sauce. Jimmy, Nixon Midwood and the overall winner. If you just obviously don't want to go. All right. Let's go to St Louis for the ribs. And let's go over here for the chicken. Let's go over here for the pulled pork. So if you've got the family and the family wants to eat a lot of different things. Midwood smokehouse? I think is the best place in Charlotte right now. I do. And you want to know what I think is just I for what I moved back to Charlotte because I was like in South Carolina, and I was in Georgia and everything else when I moved back to Charlotte in two thousand nine everyone kept talking about max speech up MAC speech about south boulevard make speech shop I've been to max speed shop probably twenty five times over the last nine years. Say two three times a year. I just don't get it. I there's nothing appealing about max to me at all. I don't I it's nowhere to me on this list. I just don't find it. There's not enough smoke in it. I don't taste smoke. I just don't I like I'll I will have friends go. Hey, let's go you want to go to maximize knows 'cause somewhere else. I just I just don't find it that appealing. They got great beer a great place to hang out. But if I want to get barbecue. There's a lot depending on what I want. There's a lot of other different places that I think is far better. I think max right now in terms of all the famous barbecue places is towards the bottom semi, by the way, anybody who goes to sonny's barbecue. Should automatically have your southern card revoked. Just just just just go wherever you want to go just get out of the south. If you go to sonny's barbecue. All right barbecue kings been here forever. It's five, but they're actually better with their cheeseburgers. And they've been around for seventy five years of sixty years. Whatever it is. But they're burgers are I think better city smokes, not bad. It's fine arts barbecue, the best thing about arts barbecue isn't the barbecue is all the other stuff that they do. Their lunches are ridiculous. I love ARC's barbecue with their lunches, the improper pigs fine. And all that Bill spoons like, whatever those they're not bad. But those places that I just mentioned that's where you need to go depending on what you want to eat. And if you've got a family that wants everything Midwood smoke house is the place to go. I let's hear some of these phone calls. I wanna hear you people gripe in or agreeing seven four five seven eleven ten. I'm Brad Johnson. And you're listening to this shows cooking..

"Do apply. Full contest rules are available at wbTcom. John hancock. So I am bread. Jitsu coming in from the WBZ newsroom here on news talk eleven ten ninety nine point three FM WBZ t taking it till six o'clock tonight. Telephone number seven four five seven, oh, eleven ten minutes. Six o'clock to seven o'clock. Of course, will be my buddy guy. Mark garrison. We're talking about what's going on tonight, Charlotte at six. All right. So. The we all know that Kroger bought Harris teeter hair, cedar is a big thing here in Charlotte in the Charlotte area. When I lived in. Clemson like, I said, it was basically it was a public thing. It was like there weren't any teeters. It was like basically Publix food line about what you add in the Anderson Clemson area, and then when I moved to Georgia when I was with the SPN that was. Kroger and Publix dyke. That's the two that were big down there Kroger in public squadron public's. So I I sorta kinda found it kind of funny that everyone got so excited. Oh my God. Publicists coming public is coming Mike. I got news for you. Better than Harris teeter, like my hair, cedar. And south park is the deal. Like, it's the busiest here cedar in the country, by the way, the one in south park, the they call it the Taj because like eight different bars food bars that you can eat at then they got, you know, of course, the sit down wine bar if you want that. And they've got a fishmonger they've got its own butcher. And they've got this. And they've got that in the deli and. And they make their own sweets and everything. Well, you know, Kroger bought them not too long ago Groeger is big food chain out of Cincinnati, Ohio. Well, Kroger is about to try and make your shopping lifestyle easier while at the same time streamlining which in turn could mean cheaper prices, and there's a big story about this. Out of money website. Like, a, you know, a financial website. And it basically says this that they're going to be rolling up this new technology in stores, they could basically change grocery shopping as we know it it's already in. I mean, it's already it's been in two stores. They've been doing like prototypes and testing getting working the kinks out. And now they're getting ready to put it in one hundred of their stores. So here's what they're doing. I'm there's display shelves like you'd say, we're the Breda's or if you're trying to buy canned vegetables, or whatever it is. On those shelves all the prices will be displayed digitally electronically. Right, which means they can constantly change in a blink of an eye instead of having all these people at night or during the day custody trying to pull out these tabs and put a new prices of three ninety nine. I mean, you remember the old day where they had like the little guns, and they'd have to put those little orange stickers or whatever it was on the bread itself that showed this is a dollar ninety nine. Now that you've got the big the big wide bands on the bottom, you know, on the shelves in the center of the shelves say breads ninety nine or whatever it is. So it's going to be digital shelving. And it's gonna be like right where the price tags currently hang, but all gonna be digitalized, and it's going to show you. Wonder bread, seventy nine cents or whatever it is. And this will allow them to instantly change prices to automatically activate promotions. Sorta like when you do when you go to a checkout now at Harris teeter, and I think it's this way. Whether you're at Baalu foodline Publix, and you've got your little rewards card or whatever it is. Your savior card when you type in your number. It knows what you've bought in the past. And it automatically at the end spits out coupons for something that you might buy next to entice you to buy that product to get. Oh, you like nature's own bread. Which is what I usually get. Oh, here you go. Boom. Here's a here's a coupon for fifty cents off the next time. You buy nature's on bread. Now. What invariably happens with me is? I'm not a big coupon guy. Now, I will buy sales like I am a sales king like, oh, you're not on sale. Yeah. I'm not going to get you. I'll get you. I'll get you next week. I just won't. I just won't eat bread this week. I'll wait till next week. Or whatever, whatever whatever it is. Maybe it's steak or strap or whatever. But. So now Lexus, but it's going to be able to change instantly all these prices, and it's going to allow Kroger to immediately undercut sales going on and other grocery stores. Oh, heresy to win or not because their own Food Lion today or Publix today just notes that Domino's sugar is by won't get one free. Guess what? Ours is even cheaper, boom. They can do that immediately right there. But the other thing is no longer do the employee's have to change the prices themselves. Whether actually putting the sticker on the item or having his takeout and slide out the numbers and change the slots while they're trying to stock and all that stuff and say, oh, this is on special. This is on your Vic card. This is buy one get one free. So that's all changed. That's going to be changing is getting ready to put that into a hundred stores. They've been working the kinks to stores, and if it's in Kroger, you know, it's coming to Harris, cedar. I mean, it's just it's just going to happen. And it may not happen in the next month, or so, but I would not be surprised that if by the end of the year, that's this is what's happening. Why did the two of you move to Belfast Northern Ireland because Donald had an office in Belfast and also because he had been married before. And and divorced when I met him and he had three children from his first marriage. And unfortunately, his first wife who had also remarried. Yeah. She she went and she has to. Yes. So he we just really relocated to to Bill and being like a one child family to four overnight, which was that was pretty interesting time of life.
