"Week show prices are still rising and you probably don't need us to tell you that that includes prices for food. It was against that backdrop that the Biden administration recently convened a summit on hunger nutrition and health. It was the first such effort in decades and it's part of a push to marshal both government and philanthropic resources toward ending hunger and food insecurity in America. We wanted to hear more about what such an effort would actually take so we call timber ray Stevenson. She is the CEO and founder of Wanda that's a nonprofit aimed at supporting advocacy around food security. Tambor ray Stevenson, thanks so much for joining us. Thank you for first having me on and having an important conversation that involves an impacts every one of us in this country. So could you just start by telling me the scope of the problem? I mean, we hear a lot of data around how big the problem of food insecurity is in America. And is that the same thing as hunger? Could you just frame the problem for us in the way that you see it? Well, first, this conference was one of two historic conferences that focused on hunger nutrition and health in this country. And just to paint the picture when CBS did a hunger in America special in 1969 that highlighted malnutrition in this country where when we typically see those images of starving babies, the hunger that we see today in 2022 is one of this double burden of malnutrition where we have this no pun intended, but blooming epidemic of not only obesity but metabolic health issues that you see by way of diabetes and other related chronic diseases. And it's really hit a peak where we have seen policies that focused on basically fattening us up, focusing on calories, macronutrients, and now we are suffering from a micronutrient deficiency of having not enough vitamins, minerals, and fiber in our diet. And so this conference and the issues that came about is really the next step after the UN food system summit that happened this past year under the dynamic of the UN painting that we need to focus not just simply on the food, the input, but also the output of what does food mean to us how do we ship our values around it? Is it our medicine? Will it kill us? Will it kill us? And what this conference gave us an opportunity and a platform to discuss the future of food and nutrition policy over the next really 50 years in this country. Obviously, this is a big subject and you know quite a lot about it, but just could you give us kind of the executive summary version or what are some of the elements of the plan that you think are particularly helpful. And then are there things where you think it misses the mark or where there are things that are missing? Well, the first thing she gets it right when he talks about one, we all need to have access to healthy affordable foods, no question about it. But then the other part that I really enjoyed seeing in this piece is about traditional foods when we talk about food is medicine interventions that investments are going to be pouring into that when you think about health insurance companies, produce prescription programs, and how are we basically making sure that people see food in the context of being able to be a part of the healing system in our society. The other part that I really enjoyed in this piece was the nutrition workforce is one of the key pieces that we've advocated and right now we need to make those investments with student loan repayment programs and making sure that we cut any red tape and make sure that the careers in the food system are more widely available in promoted to communities to not only uplift them economically but nutritionally as well. And so those are the key pieces now what I did not immediately see is the role that local food policy councils can have as someone who serves on the D.C. food policy council chairing nutrition and health. I see the importance of food democracy and what that means is having civic participation in the food system and ensuring that food, policy councils are available in every city and state to ensure that we have a mechanism for people who can channel their grievances and turn them into productive action plans and policies that change the way in which we have had to address food apartheid and food deserts in this country, and so right now, as we have traveled across Oklahoma, Texas, LA, hosting our sisterhood suppers and asking black women in particular, do you feel that you're participating in the food system and the making of it that your ancestors played a critical role in building of it and what can we do differently to ensure that you have a voice and you're able to see that your human potential is valued in the making of this food economy. I'm sure you remember that the former First Lady Michelle Obama tried to make healthy eating particularly among kids. She made it one of her key activities as First Lady. And she was ridiculed for that in some quarters. People said, oh, she's trying to take cupcakes away from kids. And things of that sort. And I guess what I'm asking you is, given your background in the field, do you see more consensus developing around these issues, regardless of political parties? Do you think that there's kind of a shared national understanding now or are we developing one that nutrition is important? Right. This conference set the tone and stage that we are seeing nutrition is important and we understand that we all have to play a critical role. I think one, I just want to give a shout out to former First Lady Michelle Obama for the yeoman's work that she did in helping to use her position to help elevate such a critical conversation and just like a winning football team, we got to know if we're trying to get to the championship, we can't focus on the naysayers, we gotta keep our goal on who is at the heart of it, who is most impacted, our children and our families, and what are we going to do to get to that goal of making sure that they have the resources they need to thrive. That was timbre ray Stevenson's CEO and founder of Wanda that's a nonprofit aimed at bolstering advocacy around food security and she was one of the participants that they, The White House conference on health and nutrition. Tambor ray Stevenson, thanks so much for talking with us today. Thank you for having me

"So there's some lady out there. I don't know her name. I think it's Christine something she wants to be. Secretary of State is wowing the tea partiers. I mean, really just knocking them for a loop. They love it. Love it Love. It was told by a friend of mine that she's the one And we were going to go out to breakfast, and I was going to get to know her and she stood us up. Well, anyway, That's the main thing I want to talk about. She, uh I don't know her name. Uh, maybe somebody listening. Can tell me her name. She was up this weekend and, uh, North Speaking, and, uh, she's saying all the right things as far as voter fraud and all that goes, but And getting the voting process straightened up. But that's only part of being a secretary of state. So somebody please pass this on to this chick. Okay? She needs to know this. She needs to say that absolutely. But a major part of her stump speech needs to be. I am going to make it such that you get your driver's license. Online and if you have to go Into a secretary of state office. You get in and out in less than Half an hour. We're going to streamline this process and also we're going to tie together. Concealed carry license. It's going to be listed on your driver's license, just like whether you or not, you may need glasses so you don't have to have a separate CPL. That's going to be on your driver's license. And, uh, things like that. I mean, the Secretary of State has secretary of state duties other than making sure that we don't get game like we did, um, with the balloting process. And, uh, harassing people that want to look into it. So Yes, Yes, yes. Keep the patriotism and the right wing fire Conservative fire going, But please add a component in there so that the people let's call them out there that have no idea what you're talking about when you're talking about voter integrity. Let's have those people vote for you as well. Okay, That's good advice. I'm full of good advice and I have to call the show. Uh, So back to this this piece here where the People's Republic of Ann Arbor has taken it upon themselves, to be all high and mighty about sustainable development. Sustainable, food, sustainable, sustainable, sustainable. And they're saying that And harbor needs to go more plant based Because that's sustainable. This is a lie by the way meet is just as sustainable as broccoli 100%. Uh, carbon fossil fuels are just as sustainable well, more so than anything they're trying to foist on people right now. But somebody named Elizabeth Nelson. She's on this council, and she's advocating for this, uh, giving staff going to start to look at the food that we're buying. Uh huh. Well, I know why they should do it for price wise. You don't want to buy pay too much for it. If you're you're using public funding to do that, but Why get rid of good food? Why not have steaks on the menu? Things like that. So the city makes regular food purchases for activities at city parks, recreation facilities, and Nelson said something hot dogs sold at Citi Golf Courses are an example example of what Well, obviously something she wants to get rid of. The city also hosts the tasty Green Cafe inside the first floor of City Hall. You know, I would ask you what How does it How does it ever come to be that the city pays for this stuff? Well, it's added value. Don't you want the city to do nice things? Not with my tax dollars? I don't not like this. No. But I'm thinking they want to get rid of the hot dogs because it's a hot dogs are a drain on the Environment Council member ELISA Dish, She's a Democrat, First Ward Joined Nelson in co sponsoring the resolution number aims to lead by example and improving food procurement policies for the city that promote sustainability goals. Which is BS support and advanced racial equity, which is racism and encourage our community to move towards a plant based diet. It. States directing the city administrator to identify potential changes city food purchases and report back to council by next February with recommendations and costs and make sure a bunch of black people work on that committee to I'm sorry people of color. Yeah, Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, Washington County has a food Policy council. They're also, uh, that also is having conversations about the topic. Hang on a second. Washington County has a Food policy council. Think about that. This is this is really stupid stuff. No, nothing. I'm saying you can do anything about these clowns do whatever they want to give a damn what you think, And they certainly don't care from the conservative side Ludicrous. This is But, hey, you should know about it. It's your tax dollars at work, baby. Mine too. And institutions that by a lot of food, this is really a huge deal. Uh huh. That's why you shouldn't have to do with it. Out of the city doesn't buy that much food. Apparently enough for you guys to think about it. That must. This must have been a slow day, huh? Custom member Ali Ra, Uh, Malawi. What is this? Ali room? Malawi. I don't That is Democrat Ward says he's personally trying to eat less meat. No, that's good. None of our business. We don't give a damn what you eat. But good good for you. But he's still sells meat based dishes at his downtown restaurant, Jerusalem Garden. I know the University of Michigan does quite a bit around this already, he said. A food procurement practices that require their suppliers to use uh compostable materials when possible. Source locally. If you want to become a strategic supplier or vendor of theirs, you need to go through a process where you're committed to trying to get locally sourced food that is within 150 miles of your location. You know this is absurd because You want the best quality food me all of it all across the board, fish or whatever, and you want it to be as least at least expensive as possible. It doesn't matter whether it comes from down the street. The guy down the street can do whatever he does to compete. This is this whole thing about local local local. I'm never impressed with that. I want the best stuff I can get if you get the best watermelon from Chile get the best watermelon from Chile. And if you want to compete, they're growing watermelon in the U. S. The university. Institute of these practices across a decade ago, and the city's behind is behind the times, says Rem Wally, Whatever his name is here, uh, he's got a great restaurant. Jerusalem Gardens. Good. I like Jerusalem Garden. Good food. Uh, I've been over there a long time because I'll try to stay out of the People's Republic of Ann Arbor for a long time. We talk a lot, but we don't walk to walk, he said of values, City officials support and promote. But don't always live up to it. And I can list the ways but I won't here tonight. Oh, come on. Listen, man, These people are shooting their balls up, Go ahead before the students, So it's the virtual meetings last year. Rub Allawi. I think it's from lower Uh, said he can recall meetings at City Hall where there was food catered with single use plastic items that aren't compostable. Oh, that's terrible. Whoa! Catered food, Do you guys? Oh, man, And then when you had to use plastic forks and spoons Oh, my God, That's crazy! Talk. But we're declaring a climate emergency, said Nelson's resolution. But she don't usually spend this much time on a B s. P s like this, But this is important because here's what's going on me. Bottom line it for you, A bunch of people that actually have something to say about things in the People's Republic of Ann Arbor are trying to go all green and make sure that you at some point or eating weeds and insects. Yeah, that's that's it. Well, they know it or not, because they're buying into agenda 2030. Uh, Nelson's Revolution resolution said she developed with the city staff Mystic called for having, uh, called the city administrator coordinate with the Washington County Food Policy Council..

"But there has to be a regulatory framework in there. Because i think once we all see then we can make measurable impacts of change but the truces. You know nobody really knows. It's just the cost of doing business most of the time. Have you heard anything from our current federal government on this that shows. It's on their radar. Have you heard anything from either any of the opposition parties that they have a proposal. Like how how much of this is is even part of the federal conversation at this point. It's absolutely part of the liberal federal calm conversation but also the other parties as well. It's it's a real common sense issue right like nobody wants to create waste especially now when you see how connected is to the climate crisis and it's a pretty solvable problem when some of the other ones are less the a little more difficult. The food policy for canada was one great step at the liberal government put together. I imagine no matter what. Government is in charge. It might look a little different. But i imagine that's likely going to stay The food policy council is another great step and we have really core mandates of addressing some of these systemic issues. And obviously i'm inside of the the pillar of food lawson waste and that's exactly what we're looking at. So we are building out recommendations with experts in the field canadian and otherwise to prepare some recommendations for the minister that i'm hoping that she will take and implement across government in the meantime considering that so much more than at least i thought of food waste and candidate is attributable to households beyond taking the best before date was several grains of salt. What can the average canadian household do. Oh i think managing their own food waste is the best place to start. I wanna talk about measurement and monitoring. I'm talking about all of us as individuals to like if we just had a note pat or we can use our phones and we started writing down the amount of food that we were throwing away then it just becomes ingrained in us that. Oh yeah not only. Are we throwing food away Which isn't great. It's costing us money like about seventeen hundred dollars per household in canada. Why would anybody throw money away. That doesn't make sense so even just internalizing it more at home and then working with businesses and when you see waste and businesses then you're gonna call it out a lot faster and you're not going to be okay with that so i'm not going to buy you know you use your shopping dollars that way. Use your voting rights that way if we don't get tough on food loss waste in this country we're already seeing the effects of it as individuals you know we're not internalizing it because it's just you know it's just life we've created this great system of waste and managing way so we often don't even see it you know even though it's there you don't think about it when you have a compost and you're like i'm doing the right thing it's going into compost but are you shouldn't have enough that you have to have a compost bin that gets picked up once a week and and often they're pretty significantly filled compost bins so preventing

Yes, I was a turquoise ladies since I've been 10 years old. No, wait. Really? Yeah. What attracted you to the to the stone? Came from Connecticut. That's where I spent 60 years and they found an Indian kitchen cave and back of my family's property. Um and I was About six years old when they found that my brother found it on and it was it was quite important, and people came from all over to see it. And I was the guy that lets them back there and I just became Interested in Native Americans because those were woodland Indians, but made of Americans in it in it sort of expanded to the West. And, uh, my family traveled out here. When I was in the probably my teenagers teenage years and brought back things to me and brought back to equation. You know, cowboy boots and branch pants and stop that deer didn't have in the East. So I began to wear those things. And I've been wearing them ever since. I went to this day English now. So that's our quest, lady. Yes, I have it on right down. Simple. Okay? It's my favorite color. Excuse me, Jim. So You had sold your agency and retired from real estate when you moved to Santa Fe. No. I sold my agency in 2009 to William Pitt. Sulla Bees International Realty in Connecticut on duh. I moved to Santa Fe seven years ago. Um so I've been out here but still with my license with those people and still selling real estate. In fact, I'm in the middle of Two big things right now with the land, and but this was being my last year. I've already given notice that at 97, it's time to quit. So I'm quitting. Why? Why? Yeah, well, it's it's going to be too much now. You know, I've done the books and I I'm busy out here. And I think I still cook. And you still got it. June You still got it. I still got it. Yes, I have. I can still do it. So it's It's a good feeling and the books really? Friends end to make me feel very good about my life in general. So it was fun writing and my son is the author. I'm the storyteller, OK, not the liar storyteller, but the storytelling so Well, I appreciate getting in the mail in a little letter from you and all that saying, would you consider having me on? I started looking for the book. And, you know thing? Yeah, it's actually great story, And you seem like a Uh, amazing lady. And then I called you and you were not around and you got back to me, and I think you said go drive my pickup pickup kind allowed. He called me back and you said you had been traveling to where Went to French ST Martin in the Caribbean. With my Children, My my son and my daughter. It was my Celebration of my 97 years and I wanted to take the zip line. But they wouldn't take me so I should have lied about my age and maybe my weight. They wouldn't take anything under £100. So that was not good, because I really wanted to do that. I have never done that. On. I said to my Children or not Children anymore. You know, in their sixties I said to them what? You go ahead and do and they said We never intended to do it. Mom, You're the only one that wanted to do it. A well Yeah, You called me on the on the way back from the same words. You're in Denver and and we said, Yeah, Let's do this. So here we are. All right. So, um, your best year Um Selling real estate Was it with prior to owning your own agency or after you started your became the boss of a CEO of your own agency? What was your best year? My best years was when my was number one in the country with Merrill Lynch. That was 80. 83 84 85. I went into my own business and 86. Okay, So my best years were those 83 84 85 then beyond because when I went into my own business, it was great. People were so responsive to my agency, and we just did beautifully. But I lived 60 years in that town in Connecticut. So you know. Yeah, I know everybody. I knew everybody. Absolutely. So it really worked. So Maryland Realty Ah, you're number one in the country. Yes, um, I was with I was on my own for a year because I was a broker. I took my, uh, test is a broker. And then I went with us very small agency only for four people, including me. On Ben. They were bought out after 12 years They were bought out by Maryland. And so for the next three years from 12 to 15 years I was actually with them because they had bought out her. So, um yes. So then you know things started to happen. I always wanted to be in my own business, but I just I was so busy, um, working for somebody else. I didn't have a chance to do it. And then I decided that I really wanted that. And that's what I did. So for 25 years, I had Wonderful business boutique 14 agent visits, not a large company, but very well known. So we did extremely well and fairly successful. And very successful. Very successful for a small business like that. Yes, because don't forget I was surrounded by national companies. Um, you know, we've had to kind of modify our service style later, Kobe, But so yeah. Uh, Go ahead. It's Yeah, it's an important It's an important program, especially with you know students at home. It fills the gap. Meals, and so you know, we since it started in 2019, we've served about 1000 meals, but we're always looking Tomo. Increased awareness and just let people know that any time you know no questions asked under 18 company gonna know, just say I'm hungry. Give me a meal, You'll get it. Mm hmm. Yeah, that's why I'm a specialty. Tea is so she can fill in on that. What about the farmers market? Was that your idea to have the farmer's market? The Southern part of the town is the farmer's market. That probably had the idea but to have it in your parking lot to bring your parking lot, trying to associate Farmer's market with Presbyterian and healthy eating. Yeah. I mean, we have a great space down there. Great location for the South side. I know. You know, we worked together with the farmers market to really, um, support that market. Um And especially kind of connected torto of our nutrition, education classes and cooking classes. This year, we said a partnership with cooking with kids where we Took the produce from the farmer's market and virtual cooking classes. Um, here in Santa Fe, So it's a great partnership, and hopefully that You know another way of increasing access to that local local food in this part of town. Absolutely. Um no, no. Want a Presbyterian? I don't know how many. How many. You're in charge of probably the cafeteria as well as providing meals for the patients and staff. Headed. Correct Right now. The cafes only open For the staff. But in normal whatever our normal times where we were open for the community as well, has staff So, but right now, it's just for the staff and we do the patient meal service. Okay, But you you I mean, you have to purchase a lot of food. So you have some, You know you and how you purchase in big lots. You could impact how a farmer sells what a farmer grows. How cool Ah pretties operating all of that, and you could impact. Ah, lot of this, whether you know what we're talking about every month on the Food Policy Council. Is providing. You know those who grow market those who buy with fresh produce and fresh food. To partnership, right? Correct. Yes, right. In fact, right now we probably purchase about 36% of our purchases are made from local for bears. So we are Supporting the local community that way because we feel we're we want to be active participants in our community so that especially now with things being the way they are that where they feel they're being supported. Why so we deal with Lamont Anita and just the best produce and we buy local coffee. I'm iconic. We have very day juices. We tried to do as much as possible. What about meats? Are you able to buy meat? Right. We get like palace win pork. We get New Mexico Lamb from the native. We had Native American beef, but we purchase all that meat. Uh, from Lamont. Anita. We've started to get some bison from local purveyor here, but we Focused on getting all that meat through Lamont Anita right now. Jesus. Lot of local cheese makers. Yeah, we get to comparing cheese. Some of the goat cheese places have aren't around anymore, But yeah, we tried to get his much of that of that product as possible. Hey, you know, Bari of Reiner, He has great pickles. We got. We were getting some of their coleslaw and stuff. And we would have fish tacos and stuff. Yeah, they're spicy slaw for sure. All right, So if there are people listening, go God, I wish I could sell to them. Can people call you or email you and say I got a product and I'm reliable. Yeah, we're always ready to support local business. We do have being a hospital. There are specific criteria that one needs to meet, but I'm ready, willing and able to talk to anybody. And they can email me. I mean the criteria. Basically, it has to be like bland. Tasteless. Yeah, right. We've probably gone the other way. We can get that in quantity. Jello and Apple says we can get in great quantity and couldn't okay. All right. So then how does all this work? How do you work? Ah, in providing maybe the facilities, Maybe the staff maybe the actual goods, Uh, to the like the teaching kitchen and all that in the classes with With cooking with kids. Yeah. So go ahead, one. I'm in a wide range of people. Me. I'm from the private sector. We have people for emergency feeding programs. People from nutrition, um, were coordinated by farm to table camera over there. Who's just Hugely engaged in so many different things around the state. And we basically right policies. We just finished a big policy paper at the end of September, Um, giving some recommendations about the city and county. They both adopted its resolution. And then they get to lose their legislative re liaisons to have bigger conversations with state and federal government. S so even though we're we're small, 13 member group. We have a pretty good voice. All right. You have a website and people can actually participate. If they're not one of the 13 by, um Well, I don't know. Can they? Can they come, too? Committee meetings virtually now? Indeed, definitely virtually we're not meeting at the official organization per city rules. Um, but they can find us at Santa Fe Food policy dot or g'kar. And the other is basic like an emergency food committee meeting, and we just try and bring in all of different partners from across the spectrum, not even just locally, but we get to have sometimes conversation. Just national folks as well. We talked about not only different policies that we can push forward but also different ways of kind of creating better coordination communication between different agencies to bolster our systems. "Question here and we'll get back to the topic at hand here. But, um, I've been asked several times today because there are warning from the FBI about armed protests in all 50 capitals beginning his earliest Sunday. Senator Smith panics. Have you talked to the governor's office? Or to Ah, leadership in the Senate about this issue about feeling safe? Keeping the capital savings? Just kind of the same thing is the United States Capitol with the attack last week, have you Have you had any conversations with anybody about keeping the capital safe? Yes, we have. And in fact our leadership Is working with Capitol security. There is a security plan in place. Of as everybody already knows the public. Is not allowed into the state capital during this legislative session due to the virus, but our Capitol police are state police have developed a security plan in the event. That we have some major demonstrations that might turn to Destruction or violence and as The You know, as any instances happen, they will be advising us what we need to do They, of course. Don't tell us In advance because they don't want to prepare. Us or the public to get around the plans, But there are discussions underway to keep our staff safe. Keep we have many staff who work for us and to keep the staff face is well is the legislators good to know represented Gal? If you talk to the speaker? No, I haven't with the speaker did Phyllis in on our Web site Council services meeting last week. But I mean, as we've watched over the last year, the number of capitals that have been attacked and and then been Those lawmakers and staff in the public put in danger, and I'm really glad to hear that. There's a plan that's being developed in place. I remember my freshman year Ah, group of people actually came into the House gallery flooded the House gallery. Real objects over, you know, into the gap to us on the house floor and drop huge banners and it was. It was kind of scary to think that you know they were unarmed, and they called it a priest. Peaceful protests. But you know that that was a pretty scary moment, considering you know, how would you protect yourself? Well, it's good to know And you know the fact that will be virtual. Well, anyway, we'll just leave it at that good to hear all right senators to fanning's. We're talking about talking about programs that the Food Policy Council does matching up young farmers with people who are aging out of farming but have land available. You won't talk about that little bit more. Well, I would. We have some great programs up here in the north and and I don't know if Rebecca Dow, our state represented down south has these programs. If there's a National organ Organization of Colorado young farmers of America, and we have a very strong chapter here in northern New Mexico. San Miguel County. I also represent Richard. They have Yvonne Gonzales is working with very young people. She's trying to help them grow year round in big walking hoop houses. House on Tell us Pablo have worked with your young people. They're young adults. And teaching them about native growing and the use of Native foods down here and La Cienega. I have young farmers who are very involved and they come to the community meeting said La Cienega has and they've been very well accepted and received a lot of support. The farmers in that area. So I'm really excited about how agriculture is being passed on and how we know that the young population wants to see the whole earth. And the climate change to the better, and this is one step moving in that direction. This is great lifestyle, and we have we have on the farmers from the scent of a farmer's market all the time. I have to ask him, you know, especially if they have family and young kids. I mean, this is this a good way to live and raise kids representing down? What do you guys grow down in your district beside chili peppers? Well, let let let's just let's make it clear. I know it's a bonnet was close to the to the border, but we can all agree that New Mexico, Chile of the best Chili and Colorado the proceeds from us so You know that Just so happened down in my neck of the woods, but a lot of farming ranching, all kinds of crops from from cottons chili con toe. I mean, you name it Everything in between onions. Our largest onion producer is in my district Villas, farms and you know we do have a our young farmers of America is probably not a big and his activism is up North County Extent. Yes, we do have one and there's a wonderful group. But our county extensions are very, very active are four H. And F F A. A is a significant presence in each of our school district. All right, Representative. What do you know about this double up Bucks program. Yeah, The double aught Buck program was such a great initiative. And I'm glad that that continuing and I hope that that continues toe to grow, and it just allows folks you see folks with E B T card often times not being able to afford. The best food possible for their family. What we know will reduce risky behavior and create healthy and safe Children and reduce their their diseases of poverty as we would call it so getting those healthy food to the Children so they can take their 82 card right to the farmer's market or to our local farm to table stores.

"Now. The 41 degrees humidity. Winifred is 26. Hurts them. All right. We have three guests all on hold right now. So let's jump in here. Pam Roy, who joins us fairly often to talk about food and the scent of a food policy counsel, Pam Roy from farm to Table and the New Mexico Food and Agriculture Policy Council and Santa Fe Food Policy Council. We also have on State center list of panic from district 39 State representing Rebecca Dow from District 38. We'll start with state representing Rebecca down because we've never had a run before. Nice to meet you, Representative. Welcome to the show. You try to be here today? The great topic. It is a great topic. List of panics. Welcome back. Happy New Year. Happy New Year, Everybody. Yeah. And we're going to start. We're gonna let Pam Roy start all kick off the whole thing because she can't cannot stick around very long. So, Pam, also happy New Year. Thank you. Thanks, Richard. And thank you so much since the facts and representative doubt for being with us this afternoon really appreciate it. All right, so pay and want to kick us off talking about whatever you want. Whatever you think, is the most important lead into the legislative session and food. Yes, thanks So much for yes, So this is actually really exciting session on, But I know that there's the fashion represent doubt will actually share a lot about how it's gonna be structured. Um But I want to thank both of them. They are taking lead on several initiatives that really focused on the health and well being of our community. Everything from our very youngest to our elders. Um, and it's really focused on food and nutrition programs and how that ties into our agricultural economy. And as many of you know, been part of the show. Um Agriculture is our fourth largest economic sector in New Mexico. Yet with the pen, dammit what we've learned Um is a huge has been a huge ramp up a lot of increase in the need and desire for local food and to build out our local food economy. That means agriculture in our state means a lot of our farmers and ranchers that air they're interested in providing their product into grocery stores and schools. Ondo. Other options really have your opportunity to build out their build out their businesses at the same time, you really mean that we get a chance to address good nutrition in our state, and the pandemic certainly has put light on that New Mexico with an increase in coded security, not only in our seniors but in our families and young ones. And so those those programs that are consistent like early childhood food nutrition programs and represent Dalby speaking about that in programs in our senior centers, and also in our schools, the school meal programs they're so important to us. Means we get a chance to get the freshest, most beautiful locally grown produce into those meals. Um, and expand those programs. So just a couple of things as many of you know, we already have. Program in the public Education department called New Mexico Groom, and, um, the Legislature has appropriated $400,000 in the last couple of years each year. Are And that translates to schools learning how to buy Produce. Your school's last year spent 1.1 million plus dollars buying local you means that was sort of an incentive for them to learn how to use other dollars in their budget to buy local So, having said that we also just started a senior pilot program for senior meal programs that was completely successful, right in the middle of Cove it all the seniors love getting produce, and we're learning that we might be able to shift how we do these programs. They really need the needs of seniors in more ways than we have in the past and seniors love getting local produce and know what to do with that They love to cook. Um and it's fresh and they and they get it. So that step part and then, of course, very early, early childhood. Um, those little ones. Where it's the most important to get that nutrition to young people. They learn about it and why it's important and then we build on those efforts as we come into first grade and on So, um, well, one other thing I'll say, and then I'll just pass the baton at that point is that this is an inter agency on initiative now. So Public Education department aging normal in terms of service is, um, the early childhood education program Department of every culture and the Department of Health. All are partnering. This will probably be the first state to have this kind of her inter agency program across sectors so Really excited about it. And first the panics and represent gal or absolute champions and leaders in this work, and I'll stop now and look forward to hearing how it all goes with them. So thanks so much for the opportunity to be with you up. I'll try and do a good job. Thank you, Pam. Appreciate it. All right, Representative Rebecca Dow. You are in district 38, which is in the truth or consequences. Area how long you've been in the Legislature. I am about to start my third term. So I have completed four wonderful years. All right, so your interest in food or agriculture or school or school lunch program come from What It goes much much further than my time in office. I have worked around food security in my community for quite some time, making sure that Life in childcare centers like head start like private programs and even registered home providers had the opportunity to participate in a. It's a program called Child Adult. Agreement Equitable to a school nutrition program offered by the USDA. So for quite a long time, and the reimbursements are.
