"Here's my conversation with Nadine fonseca. Needing welcome to parenting for the future. I am so honored to have you here. Thank you so much. I'm excited to be here with you today. So I always like to start our conversation by talking to my guests about their own backgrounds, delving a little bit into their early life experiences. Sure, who you like. So what were you like as a child? And what kind of home nurtured you into and to quote you, the type a entrepreneur here, color chameleon, witty banter enthusiast, fiercely sarcastic Latina woman, you are today. Gotta love that mouthful, huh? You know, I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. And I have one older sister, so I was the baby of the family. And I was just kind of a rebellious kid. My sister was kind of a model child, which, you know, bless her heart, that's fantastic. But for every model child, you got to have the rebel to bounce things out in the household. So that was me, you know? And I think I just kind of found early in life that I wanted to do things to the beat of my own drum that I wanted to learn lessons the hard way because they stuck longer. I don't necessarily know that that's right or wrong, but it got me to where I am today. So I am grateful, but yeah I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, very diverse, you know, population, my mother was from California, born and raised in my father was actually born and raised in Guatemala. And immigrated here when he was a teenager. And so really interesting dynamic growing up as the daughter of an immigrant and also very much white passing. Both my parents were very encouraging of pursuing academia pursuing careers and you know all these different things. I think entrepreneurship was foreign to them. So I think they wanted to encourage me, but were hesitant and felt that they could protect me by throwing some caution my way, but otherwise we're always very, very supportive.

"Okay becca. That's that's what happened. Basically but what happened. What did i. i don't remember. 'cause there was a point where i was like. Oh this is so funny. This is so funny. And then the point i was like oh now when she started like poking the penis i was like yeah and now. It's getting inappropriate. i have to. We were laughing imposed on her face. And then you go okay. You took a deep breath and you have to be a parent now. And he looked at her. And you're like oh because she was like what is what is it. And you're like yes that's his penis and you know like something along the lines of like she was like can i touch. Can i play with it. And you're like well. This is a doll. So that's okay and so it was a magical moment. What was so funny is that we know vanessa's quirky and like fine and like us. You know no kids like she's gonna like you don't know what you're going to find friends houses but this was like bake off that sex off a friend that needed a fun party and we don't know who cares what they're doing but no. I never expected her just like going another room and then pull out a sex doll by the pena's it was. I thought it was the funniest thing ever and also away. You know she knows what one is she talks. We talk about everything. Like i used for two things to be like not a topic. You discussed like everything can be talked in an age appropriate way for a child because then nothing is a mystery. Then thing we've talked about sex. We've talked about parts talked about by you. Know gender fluidity. We've talked about like yeah transgender. Like and it's just a way that you talk to her that she can sort of understand but it was like one of the funniest moments ever. When i'm just like. I have a martini in my hand. I'm she's the only mom in the room. Like i'm trying to enjoy myself. I was like just a human and then it's moments that we're like. Oh and now. I have to go be a parent okay. I'm gonna go do that. And sex stall from her hand. Well we're so excited for turner and hooch like we isolate again. We cannot wait. We're counting down the days so seeing. Wait for you to see bekker's pantsuits or pence kurt. Her lashes you know we saw some like i did have a small file on my computer like collection of evidence so like i know some of outfits like we know that brooke enjoyed a pearl at one event permanente. Now remember the so. We have moments. But we're so casey. you end. Celebrate you so congratulations on your nine hundred thousand job. the way. I just wanted to mention like young. The rest is big logged Jasper housewives like the list is very long and you can follow nikita. Isn't that where you have. Your phantom from an agent. Carter will those were the like action kick ass comecon people. That are so supportive. And we'll thanks ladies. This was so fun and things were dealing with my naked child and the workers fixing my hasty which is why my room is a mess. God it's embarrassing now. we love your authenticity. That's what we're here for here for a long time. Thanks for listening. The lady gang is.

"Go the lady okay. We're back all right. So there's something that happens in hollywood that it fascinates us weekly's in people magazine's of the world and we're dealing with it right now with the most famous co stars falling in love zhijie geely. Oh god they low and like near for it. You know it happens all the time and it's either it ends up great like for you. You were beautiful baby. You have a lovely husband like you found in love onset like it worked out or it's like hot for a minute or it's a fake thing together just for publicity like but you always hear people falling in love onset of shows like what the hell is happening on. The set. That a sexual. I'll tell you what so extremely vulnerable to be in love with someone on camera because if you are not fully in love with someone on camera you call bullshit like you see it you know it and like for i mean i just shot. This movie called spinning gold and like i played mistress and i had to come in and like basically stick my tongue down guy's throat. I mean a very wonderful actor. Jeremy jordan becca. We need to talk about this. They did they were on broadway together. and unlike to sober for this moment like i am. I have to be like passionately making out with someone where the audience is going. Ooh they're about to have sex. Yeah very exp- vulnerable feeling. Like i just i totally get it. Being in that feeling. That's why marriages break apart. That's why i mean look. I married my husband. I mean. we didn't have onscreen kiss but like we. Are you know on location together. And i'm amazed that not everyone falls in love with started. They kind of even. If it's just gonna have an affair or not right. I think it happens more than we even know all the you as a woman. Send your husband into that when you know how vulnerable it is. My husband learned very early on to not tell me. Because i think i would not i would not do it. I'm married to a norm me. I'm not putting my husband. Onscreen french kissing someone else like. I'm sorry i don't know how you do it. Well it's probably nicer. And i respect that. It's not i think i just have to like i think you just suck it up really see for me i. I can't because i'm also with an army. But like tim rainey. Because i know that every time i play like i'm in love with somebody on camera that i'm not actually so what i understand when i guess there's a part of me that every single time i've had to be like in love with somebody on camera. I do the work of finding out things i actually love about. The person like preparing for for like being eleven josh. We don't do that no now. That is so why finds the only way that i can like be believably in lover into somebody like i have to find real characteristics about someone like with josh. I was like. I love how much he's like a family man and it can be like twisted the way that i love the way he talked about his wife and the way that he talked. A little boy doesn't have to make sense. It doesn't have to make sense. But the things that i really admired about him made it so easy for me to walk in and be like i love this man like i love him. I love all these things about him. I could have found things. I didn't like if i was playing somebody who hated him but like it's not real love. It's it's for the sake of the performance. I guess that will that totally makes sense. But for me i trust no so much. I just don't know who these other women are. And that's not. Like if i was with a woman like it's not a sexist thing it's that like with someone i know weber the f. The other person is i. Don't trust them. Because i don't know that so it's more like when he plays a husband. I'm like blue. She married she family. She has family cocoa right lake. Go like weird. But i love you for admitting that because i think it's being weird when people are like it's just my job. It's like it's like i'm a doctor just scrub in inscribed on like they don't have to make our people in every other job. Yeah like i. Don't i don't i don't believe there's a way that you can send your husband off to do what you do that. So intimate and not feel something. So thank you for admitting that i like that makes you so real and relatable because i think any woman or man on the planet like. I don't even like sending my husband on a airplane. Because i'm like who are you sitting next to you. Smell the nation beautiful. Watch like someone's gonna pick you up. You know a here lindsey. it's no it's wild. i'm having sex with him so somewhat to my god. That's for another day. Because i wanna get into that into that right now. This is turner and who just turned week. We've we've been into you. Get out i do. You have a three year old. I think people that are procreating right. Now are being insane. World is on fire social media out. There i cannot imagine what you're lying to instill into the next generation like i feel like i'm in the wild wild west. Did you watch the pink documentary. She's literally like talking to your children like little adults and she's like was so good that you could communicate your needs. I was like what my needs. Yeah apparent well. it's an equal for me. I'll just talk about me. That's all i know. But it's an equal balance of like this conscious parenting approach to life which is like that thing. That pink just did all right. I see you're having a tantrum. I own my gosh. You're really upset about that. I'm not gonna try and fix it. Let's just be upset and like let's work through it and those moments of the things that we never got navy as kids being chained for big emotions so there's a conscious parenting side qasimi sort of emotion of that and then there's the other side which is going to punch my pillow so that i don't hit a wall and i'm having my third meltdown of the day because god this is so hard. You have an incredible parenting style. That i don't know if it's like something you were just innately really good ad but your patients is incredible. And you do that with your daughter. Greta like you really do honor like whatever it is. She's going through but not in like a cheesy granola l. a. parenting way. Like you'll be like you kind of say things where the subtext is okay. Don't do that or like you're being a dick right now. You can stop. But it's very real with her but it's in a way that like you don't make her feel ashamed..

"Love that though. And that's probably why you've had such a long career because a few saw the projects that you were so close to getting and then were dead inside with jealousy. You will already like banana tree and joshua tree made it like mission. I sometimes like 's ability to be like. I'm not doing anything right now in vancouver like i'm like what's going on. His show has taping and she's not talking about. It's like you almost disconnect from it because it actually took it so seriously. You would be like one of those jerks that. I've interviewed that takes. They're acting so seriously. And you're like are you live arina alien. Are you know living hbo box. Like what's up. What i loved about working with lindsay is that we were actually cut from the same cloth. We're both capricorn is. I think this might have something to do with it. But like we'll be in the middle of shooting a scene and we had like one to get our first thing together and we were both like fine thing had down. We didn't know each other that well at that point and i think it was like a second day one of us look at the other. I can't remember bill because we were both so likely to do this and was like i feel like i'm really talking right now like you. I'm really sucking. And i don't know how to not suck saying this line now. It looks like the most moment. Because i realize that it doesn't matter who you are. What you've done. Nothing every single person has that moment where you feel like you're sucking and it feels so amazing to connect with somebody who knows what it feels like in that moment and i really appreciate about having you and having been on the show like nobody was acting like they were amazing and incredible and talented and even though we all are we all had those days were like i was so bad. Like i'm embarrassed. We feel like just getting older though. Like you're like you're less of. I'm in a box and thing to ingenue. I'm the love interest like the things that you night. We've always been like be the pretty girl do this. And like you get older. And i'm like playing a single mom who doesn't like our shit together and all of a sudden i'm like my god can be weird and quirky and like be myself and laugh that's when like shit and greatness opens up 'cause for no maybe just starting young you just get stuck in these boxes and you're like but i don't wanna be in the spots. I'll just look at you and be like that was terrible terrible. Yeah yeah that's literally what the lady was built on. You know what. I mean like connecting over feeling like vulnerable and insecure. And just so. I'm in the right place. The right thing you are when we come back we're going to talk to lindsay about why co-stars fall in love. Hello hello you sexy ass ladies. This week's theme for leading secrets is lying now. Lying can take the form of so many different things. But when i think about lying i think about the traditional catfish have you catfish somebody before have you been catfish and fell in love with somebody that turned out to be a grandpa have used on somebody whose identity or this is what i think about lying to like a hilarious baldwin. You know. Have you started with this little white lie. And then it spiraled out of control like maybe you have been lying to your husband for the.

"I don't know a spin off of like then you you guys will. You should also be able to do how i met your father and somehow tie in. Isn't hillary duff doing that. I think hillary is like she but like you can absolutely come in and play somebody that flake play the role of josh. Ratner's daughter right. That's a fun fun little. We've got an idea. So i do want to ask you this. I want to ask you about auditioning because bhakta will not really. I mean well. Jack runs lines with becca or used to until she found somebody better until she got someone better her husband in. No no zack. Martin is not a great. No jack is much better. Strong thank you. I want to know about like the audition process. Worst auditions best. Audition auditioned for turner and huge. Like tell me a story. I have so many but is i've been doing this since i was five. But like i audition for What was that movie about. The sex with the sex is what checks the facts. You know the one dakota. John offense sheet right okay. So i auditioned for that and it was the audition was just a monologue and the monologue and i don't. I never saw the movie. Like i don't know if it ended up in the film or if it was just for audition purposes but was a monologue that was basically me laying on Like a son chair like lounging beecher a pool and telling someone like an orgasm story like just like a full page monologue just expressing myself about touching myself. I everyone was like this is going to be a giant movie is going to change your life forever and was like beca. You know that one of those things where you're like everything is telling you to stop doing this. Yes gene shin. Yeah this is not. This is not for you. If you're getting the red flags swearing listening. Lindsey and i want an hands who got the gile dakota johnson. Oh wait it's that movie shades of gray thinking of. I'm sorry i was thinking of. That is shut. Tom cruise movie bad because no one needs to bring that up right now. I'm already troubled about turning. Thank you for coming to ted talk. So how is the addition. I need to know how when you would have been a great anastassia. Well that's very sweet. I'm sure i just not good being in front of a stranger in talking about like pressuring myself. Call me crazy. Who is like if you're in good. That's not good at that. That's your job first of all. Congratulations great job for you. But also your something is off if you can actually go in like no abandon about like watching yourself. That's another level of acting. I can't come in and take good for you. You know for you but good moments that are were like the almost moment like i. I got very close. I did the screen test for hunger games with the director for that. And like i remember. Emily browning in the room and like getting very you know priest says jennifer lawrence. Yeah and like so. There's a lot of these moments that were what else. What else store. Oh god all of them. But i'm lame theories you know cute. I just really Every time that. I see them always like. Oh yes that makes sense. Yeah and you know what this. This is a full circle to. I should be more ambitious or competitive. I really should no no. It doesn't help.

"Jacking healthy and very special lady We did a little show called turner and hooch together up in vancouver for six months. She's been working in this business and she was like in diapers. She's been an eight million shows her. Imdb is like running off. The page is so long is perfect. Timing lindsey. This is great advice to say i was just about to say she has a daughter. Who's really the star of the family named credit. Who am i crying. Tell her tell her to come say hi. This is the most embarrassing lead in my. Acs broken my sister just walked in with a naked three-year-old is my child anna worker hannah earlier today. I hope you don't edit this out because this is not this is this is really feel less alone. Hey had he can come in here. My acs broken and there's a worker and i. There's i'm like in my i dunno. They'll figure it out. Contact everyone here. Here's a this is what's happening. We're here becca. The whole time. She left us. We were really jealous and we felt like. I can't believe you have other friends that you work with. I mean we felt like she was up in canada having time of her life and she was like no. You don't understand this. Cast is so cool. It's the most rad people and now. I'm realizing that you're naked. Three-year-old your lack of ac. You're red lip like you're right. You're awesome and she's awesome she's awesome. Wow ladies i appreciate that. We loved having beckon also. It's so funny. Because i only knew back from this woman who just came in we had already started shooting and she comes in. Is this love interest and immediately. I loved her cynicism. I loved her sarcasm. I was like. I don't know who this person is but Yes this is my ac guy. Hi it's fine. I'm just doing a live podcast but to my closet and so it's it's in there around the corner okay. So anyway i was like who is amazing person. And then i she told me about lady gang and i started listening and it was so funny i was like oh this is bekka other lights. It's like her other wives sharing you so we know about we know about brooke and by the way lindsay. Probably don't know this. Becca told us almost nothing about her entire time. It's still don't know anything about we know. Very little brooke is the love interest. She's a lawyer she wears pantyhose and fantasia. Does she any house. We had to figure this out on our own by the way she offered nothing. And so i wanted on turner and hooch who you're playing. Who shows about your patio. Well we had only one beautiful moment at a. It'll give you a little hint about the show. We met our characters matt at a guacamo- lay festival Jahmai character used to be in high school. The lake clean of guacamole festival and back though was the leg. You know my brother on the show. Josh packs date and so we were in strange outfits. I was wearing a walker. Molly printed dress. Obviously and back. It was had too much makeup on as usual on the show. Brooke loves saliva cook. She loves lash. He loves the browns are and so anyway. Yeah so you played the love interest. I play the sister who's a single mom and barely keeping it together. And i don't know off camera was love it for site. I don't know to say other than true you. Have you kept it a secret from these ladies because we'll be talking about herself. Bill gates is the podcast host. No here's just where. I don't know what to do minute predicament. And this has now become all about me So i knew going. In to the show. I am a recurring guest star and so like my percentage of each episode that i'm in is it's small even though i'm the love interest. The story does not revolve around like turner. Scott turner's love life like an important person in his life. But i don't have this like really crazy powerful like storyline if you will and so i believe you had your own law is set and like pam down. What's attitude of. Here's what i do. So i didn't wanna make anybody think that i'm like the star of this show which i am not so i'm like if i just don't talk about it. Then when it comes out everyone can be like pleasantly surprised that i popped into one scene of an episode but what i realized is that by keeping more mystery. It makes us you like. I'm jennifer king. Laura's you've earned hooch. You've made an error because now you've let kelsey night run wild and decide what you are in her mind. Yes so. I don't know. I'm going to split the difference until you guys. I'm neither really important nor non important at all but lindsay's character is very important the stories. She's one of the leaders of the show. But you've also been in this business for a good jillian years yet. Somehow you've managed to not be an asshole. Yeah we're gonna try to find out how that's possible. But i tell everybody when i looked you up. I was like. I know. I know her face. I know her name like she's just one of those women that's always working in the business because she's talented. She's beautiful and she's cool. And i'm like i know i've seen her. I know i've seen her. And then i pull up. Imdb and it's like eight million episodes of how i met your mother and i'm like well that's weird. She's like my age and she would have been so young and then it clicked. I was like she's the daughter. That bob sagged is talking to the entire series of how your other Yeah any also. I by the way grew up watching full house like it was my like my second family course and i remember that at one of the parties of how might your mother like the creators always had these like charity events in i would go at like in bob tag was there and i was like he. We've never met. And i was like i'm your daughter lash. I've grown up with you and watched you my entire childhood. You're like my second dad. Didn't say that part and we like just sell zamira laughing and like it was literally like a hopeful. Superbowl breakout moment. When your mother. How did they shoot you guys like because it was always just his voice and you guys were sitting on the couch. Did now play his voice over. Like what do they do. I think in the pilot Josh radnor who played father in the in the main part of the show i think in the pilot he was delivering us the lines and i i was so young. It's like i don't even barely remember. How don't think i i'm deeply could do the math for me but i wanna say like each. Oh you looked like twelve. Yeah maybe i don't know i have no. I have no idea. And then when the show got picked up what happened from the pilot to the first season is that we show up again and by the way the creators had no idea that they were. I don't think that they were gonna bottle our stuff. They like hired us to be on the show for all the seasons and we showed up from the pilot of the first season and the kid who played my brother david henry. He grew four shoe sizes and went through puberty. My god and i remember like pamela frydman at big god of multi cam directing She directed all the episodes she. I remember her face. Remember the creator. The schoener spaces and it was like there is a freaking man sitting on the couch now. Like what are we gonna do. Because i was older it was like less like put like extensions and like we say certain things but so anyway lawyers came in. We signed documents. Like we're gonna bottle all your shed and you're just going to say all the lines and we don't know how long we're going to use them for because at the time we didn't know if this show is going to be one season asks whoa and in ten seasons later they're still using so we spent like a whole day. Pamela would like give us lines. The writers would white right stuff and then they would just put them into the show when they needed. So new episodes. Were airing but it was like a time capsule for me. Because meanwhile like i'm shooting some show in providence as a twenty three year old. But i'm like during the show and i was like. Oh they use that line. I don't remember saying play this all in one day i think it will. We did do a comic con like their union. Rains blob later. Wow we think they'll ever do a movie hope so yeah i think they will it..

And I just really wanted to make make sure that I as Helen understood the science behind what I was doing because Helen is an engineer and she would know exactly what her husband was you know working on. So I spend a lot of time trying to understand that the emotional aspect of the film was actually a little bit. I mean not easy but more in my wheelhouse as far as preparation and tapping into. So you know as far as the loss of someone and you know dealing with died So so yeah. The the prep with Yego and Julio, was a lot about the science actually. I know you've done physicality before because I was actually at your round that here comecon for Nikita years ago so I know you can handle that part of it. You had a little bit here but. You're really wasn't as much. There's a few scenes you had to kind of deal now obviously with Nikita put me through rigorous. Training for all that stuff. So with definitely curvature any sort of you know explosion blast or holding a gun sort of a second nature to me point. But with with Helen, you know she's not supposed to be an action star. So it's it's about a withholding that machine gun in that moment in the film had to make sure that I was as how in holding it as opposed to knowing exactly what it's like. Hold it. You know. You know usually in a film like this, we see a guy going through all this. So it was for me. It was refreshing to see a woman going through this. And a woman scientists for that matter too. So you know speak to that at that obviously must have been part of the. Appeal. Story. Absolutely when the holidays brothers approached me with script and asked if I would read it and meet with that they were interested in me for it I I was really sort of I was really honored that they thought. I could handle it first of all, and also just really admire the fact that these brothers wanted to make a movie with elite female that wasn't to sexualize character was not some sort of interest storylines that this was a movie about time travel was a movie about law and this was a smart independent woman So it was really in it appealing to me to dive into something like that because it just doesn't come along very often. Fonts Can Send Political Messages
"Here's something weird. Certain thoughts can send political messages. And with that. I am announcing my campaign for presidency using economic sense. Ms Well actually when you listen to this research you're gonNA realize why you don't WanNA use Comic Sans. Because nobody likes. It and liking fonts is one big part of this. I like Comic Sans No you. Don't nobody likes Comic Sans Vinyl run using papyrus even worse. My running mate will be Matthew mcconaughey all right well. A little while ago. A researcher at Virginia Tech named Kathryn Hanshin Notice that a local political candidate use different fonts on their signs in rural areas than they did in town as a political messaging expert. She wondered. Why was there. Something different about the fonts that worked best with people in the city versus people in the country so Hanshin turn that question into a research project. She and her team surveyed more than two thousand people to find out what they thought of various typefaces. And whether they thought fonts lined up with political ideologies sure enough they found that fonts can send political messages people see Fonseca's having liberal or conservative leanings. And the more people think of aligns with their thinking the more they'll like it. So here's the breakdown. Funds come in two basic varieties Sarath and sans Serif. A Sarah is a little liner stroke at the end of a letter. Think Times New Roman or your classic typewriter font the stuff you see in Newspapers Sans Serif Fonts are the ones without syrups silicon Arial Helvetica or the meriwether sands of the curiosity logo or just look at your keyboard right now. Chances are those letters are in a San Serif style. The study showed that generally speaking Sarah Fonts are considered more conservative and Sans Serif. Fonts are seen as more liberal. Bold type is seen as more conservative than Italic type but there are some differences within font families for example the highly serif black letter typeface. You usually see on the masthead of the New York Times and the Washington Post was seen as more liberal by conservative participants. Possibly because that's how they see these outlets specifically the important thing is that the more people viewed a font aligned with their ideology the more they liked it and vice versa. Basically this research shows that fonts have meaning and they're not just all about looks so as the two thousand twenty election heats up maybe take a closer look at those lawn. Signs and billboards design has a bigger impact than you think.

O. N. I. N. on I and I I said as a technically Jewish man who has been circumcised so this could be just me trying to make a correlation between something that's been made to feel normalized through pretty much who we are as a society but I mean they're performing circumcisions in hospitals right so I mean there is a medical aspect of that it's not like it's single handedly a religious you know ceremony where they're doing this there there's more to it than just that so it makes it a little easier to explain away rather than a child being burned with with a cigar on is a stomach correct but.

"Fonseca's Sanderson. And I'm obviously artsy. In this episode of our series bridges and walls were looking at how high speed rail will transform California by connecting the bay area to Los Angeles and to the central valley, even as it forms a wall on farmers land. Now, let's go to downtown, Fresno. Absolutely. I'll tell you, right. Upfront hundred percent supporter of the project because of the connectivity. That's going to happen between Fresno, the central valley, and San Francisco and Los Angeles that connectivity is going to change everything for us. This is leeann IGA, she is the president and CEO Fresno county economic Development Corporation and her job is to help. We locate businesses up looted by well construction, while attracting new ones she's been doing this since voters approved high speed rail a decade ago as you travel around the state, depending on who you're talking to. I'm either the Queen of high. Speed rail or something else? So for here in in Fresno because high speed rail started here because the very beginning of that backbone is here we've sort of been to things we've gotten the opportunities from the very beginning. As far as jobs, we've also been the Guinea pig. Do you have like a startup incubators that kind of infrastructure in place to help bring businesses up either beginning from scratch or relocating here, we do and certainly the Silicon Valley type businesses we have a bit ways not too far from here around the corner. They started with a very small twelve a company incubator there now, I think at about one hundred twenty and they're continuing to grow. Leeann IGA heads the Fresno county economic Development Corporation now you heard her mention bit twice in downtown, Fresno. This is a tech hub with a lot of buzz, and Fresno, it was co founded by Jake sobre and Irma. Logan, they grew up on different sides of Fresno, both of them moved away. And then they. Returned to their hometown with plans to change it. So we sometimes say as a tagline that bit wise is the mother ship of technological education. Collaboration and innovation in, Fresno. Really what we set out to do with bit wise was on to use the technology industry as a tool to fix our city. My background is farm labor family. In farm labor town. I did not set out with a dream to someday build the company that I would run that could change the face of the central valley. My vision for my life was to maybe become a manager at a local shop somewhere in the town of which I grew up, and and be able to, you know, pay all my bills in the same month in the fact that I get to do this is serendipitous to save a least. And so the technology industry is the hammer that we have in our hand at the moment. What were the problems in your city that needed fixing Fresno has a city has virtually every economic and social ill that you could hope for which may be as it can be defeating but also paints a picture of just immense opportunity. And and here we've got a about a million people in the center of California that aren't going any place, and it's a place that we care deeply about and all of that for us sort of traces back to the need for opportunity the need for new wealth generation in the need to connect that to people of our region. And with the technology industry being the fastest growing industry on the planet and showing no signs of slowing or going any place on we thought it uniquely good fit to begin to fix those problems here in central valley. So tell us what is the connection of high speed rail to these goals? Do you see it as enabling people who work in San Francisco or LA to maybe live in Fresno all lava, do you see it as enabling Fresno and the surrounding areas to develop as their own strong economic hub? I think it's all of the above that being said I connect via high quality transit benefits every city, and we think sort of that resource will lift both Fresno, and San Francisco and all other parts of our state. That's Jake sobre and Irma organ co-founders and co-ceo of bit wise, you could say they represent the Fresno of tomorrow. So by now, you've heard from people who are extremely supportive of high speed rail and extremely opposed. Is there a middle ground in this drama? Well, yes and to find it we went to the roof of the Fresno bee great viewing spots. You can't see the bridge off there. But the skyline behind it. Our guide was Tim Sheehan reporter at the be the same probably took a little over a year to build a little longer than they thought it was going to as a lot of things related to this project had taken longer than I thought it would have been covering aspects of high speed rail since two thousand ten and you know, having seen where this thing has gone over the last seven or eight years. There are very legitimate questions about where are they going to get the money to finish it. I mean, initially they were talking about twenty twenty two having the trains running. That's been now pushed at twenty twenty five and who knows if it's actually going to happen because I'll be retirement age by the time, they strain start running and do you feel? This is the biggest change that this region has seen in the time that you've been alive. Potentially. If it comes to fruition. It'll be the biggest change if it doesn't come to fruition. It will represent a big gash through the town as you can see from the buildings across our street that aren't there anymore frustration with high speed rail is mounting when voters approved it in two thousand eight it was supposed to be a thirty three billion dollar railroad completed by twenty twenty today, the cost is balloon to seventy seven billion dollars and rising. And the current completion date estimate is twenty thirty three. Now, those escalating costs are in part caused by the lengthy negotiations over the acquisition of parcels of land that we heard about earlier, so we check back in with Tim Sheehan. And we asked him. What all this, drip, drip of bad? News is doing for the project. Does it produce a kind of self perpetuating cycle of complaints as in? If you keep on talking down. High speed rail will more people get on board. The negativity train. He's. Said yes. And all these problems could diminish the willpower in Sacramento, and that could mean the Gavin Newsom is far less supportive of high speed rail than Jerry Brown, which could mean you wind up with plan b which is what exactly if they only build this section from Madeira or more said down to just north of Bakersfield. They've got a contingency pot of money that if nothing else ever happens, then they can link it up to the existing BSF tracks and use this as an improved and dedicated stretch of line for one hundred and fourteen miles for Amtrak to get Amtrak off the freight rail line and speed the Amtrak service that is sort of the last resort as as the rail authority tends to see it. Tim Sheehan.
