Experience Traveling By Train

"Start today's travel. With rick steves. With other. Eric wanner he recommends seeing the usa from a long distance train. Ride on amtrak. Our interview with eric was recorded just before the covid shutdowns kicked in when we travel. It's fun to see the world from a different perspective eric. Winer believes travel by train offers a rare combination of expansiveness and coziness. He spent a lot of time travelling by train while reading the work of great philosophers and for him. It goes together beautifully. He writes about that in his latest book. The socrates express eric. Thanks for joining us. Happy to be here so you actually took the train from washington dc to portland that sixty four hours. You could have flown in about five hours. There's just nothing rational about that. No it makes no sense. It makes no sense from a time point of view. Obviously it makes no sense from a financial point of view It really doesn't make sense from a mental health point of view. Either but i loved it. What can i say. I love every every minute of every hour of you know. It wasn't always. It's not the most glamorous way to travel but this just something to something awfully compelling about you made a very good case of that first of all you talked about the people you should the platform with. I mean okay. You're standing on the platform with surrounded by twenty or thirty people waiting to get onto that Train who are they okay. I'm going to do this quickly. Therefore determined therefore categories of long distance amtrak travelers. Okay number. One is retired people with lots of time on their hands. Number two is people who are afraid of flying. These are my compatriots to They take the train a number three or foam irs a fomer is a real enthusiasts. Who gets very excited about. Locomotives and other things like that means. They're so excited. They foam at the mouth. That's the idea okay You care to take a guess with the fourth category. As you'll never guess mennonites mennonites lots of minute nights a matter night. You mean like Lou dates are people that don't want modern. Well they apparently they They can fly but they can travel by train long distances. So these are the four categories and then there was me and i don't fit any of those categories. I was a category into myself for your kind of the opposite. Because you mentioned you have criminal phobia which is A fear of lack of time. And and you do just the opposite. It's that some kind of therapy. It was it was sort of this. What are you desensitize yourself to it. Well i always feel that your time is valuable. And i need to be making the best use of it and when you're on the train for some sixty plus hours you're just you're forced to slow down. I mean you're either go crazy or you slow down. Those two choices and i decided to slow down. The train is going to get the portland at its own pace. And there's nothing you can do about it. It will stop occasionally for an hour to for no apparent reason whatsoever and then start up again for no apparent reason and i would ask my fellow passengers if we stopped and they've just laugh at me like We got a new one. We gotta a rookie. Here in amtrak stan. You do not ask why. He thinks he's human. Beings are more important than freight right. We do we. We wait for free trains. Because amtrak does not own most of the tracks across the country the free traits everytime i go to portland derek from seattle and the train. I think i'm doing something nice for the environment. And so on. Or it's just kind of a cool thing to do and it's frustrating. Because i have chronic phobia also and i don't know beiber waiting here and somebody reminded me freight trains get priority over humans in the united states. That's not the case in europe but in the united states. That's the case but for those of us who like you and me have a fear of lack of time where where we schedule things. Its pedal to the metal. It's interesting how a long trip on a train you mentioned. It was like you hit a mother of time. Suddenly you had this big gift. That i guess you got more time just by slowing down right. And it's it's forced right because you can't go off and say we're going to go into into town and in fire up the laptop and get some work done. I mean you're on the train and you stay on the train and it's got through. I went through an interesting cycle. I i thought oh this is great. I've got this time. This is really good. I should do something. And then i just get antsy. And i started rearranging my little room at and moving things around and i started to go a little bonkers. I needed to do something. And eventually i came to acceptance that that he was gonna take a really long time to get to portland and i needed to just go with the flow and It took me a. I think somewhere around montana. I hit acceptance in there.

Tennessee Issues Statement on Termination of Nine Employees and Jeremy Pruitt

"Tarrant tennessee. No parting of the ways. No resignation fired. Jeremy pruitt after an internal investigation the chancellor of the university chancellor plowman earlier today the personnel actions. We are announcing. Today are an indication of the gravity of what we've discovered today. Athletic director fomer and i issued termination letters to the following assistant. Football coaches brian. Nita meyer and shelton felt also four members of our on campus football recruiting staff additionally our director and assistant director of football player personnel and finally a football analyst quality control coach. So what are what are Council has told us is it. We're looking at level one and level two violations. I don't know yet yet. Exactly how many or exactly the specifics of it the chancellor earlier today and we have the live coverage here blake top. Mayer has covered the story from the beginning and he joins us early evening from knoxville blake. Good evening thanks for being with us and before we get to specific just describe. What this day has been like in knoxville. Well obviously the big news that we've been waiting for call for a probably at least a month now and in the the question for at least the lack last week or more has been. Is jeremy Going to get outright fired for cause or is he going to get fired with a settlement for reduced by out. I mean i. It felt like inevitable that a coaching change was coming. And we've got the answer today. That pruitt's being fired for cause. Tennessee does not intend to pay him. One cent of his twelve point six million dollar buyout also included in the four. 'cause firings Were systems. Brian eater myron shelton felton in the termination letter to jeremy pruitt tennessee chancellor plowman outlined six four. 'cause provision of jeremy pruitt's contract University believe he violated and of course all stems to be ongoing investigation into sweeping recruiting if violations That have occurred or are believed to have occurred within tennessee's program during pruitt's watch like so many things unpack the chancellor said. She threw her own program under the bus. And i understand the tendency to pile on but having covered many of these before as you have. That was really unprecedented address. That if you don't mind it's obvious that the chancellor is frustrated beyond frustrated with the the amount of malfeasance that i think she sees within the football program. I mean these. I think it's fair to call these sweeping violations. And what she believes they're going to be major violations. stemming from the football program She she mentioned that she was stunned. By both the number of interactions and the number of people involved in the infractions. And so you know. It doesn't leave tennessee in a great position to come out on the other side of this and say you know hey. Nca take it on us there. There really wasn't that much bad going on here. You know you've seen a lot of athletic departments kind. Play that card with the ncaa play hardball with the ncaa and say that they weren't breaking rules. I think tennessee is is quite clearly taking me approach of Of admitting its its mistakes. upfront here Firing the people that believes are responsible for the mistakes and then going forward is going to have to pivot and try to likely self imposed penalties and hope that that can fend off Some of the harshest punishment from from the ncaa but it does leave it in a difficult scenario here as it goes forward not only with the ncaa but as it tries to hire and athletic director and it tries to attract a football coach.

Vols firing Pruitt with cause after investigation

"Butch jones suddenly looking better. Jeremy pruitt gone today. John joining us. These senior sports editor at aol dot com and john. It is great to have you with us. We've talked about the possibility that pruitt would be gone. He is now gone. Fulmer out as well. Your reaction another stunning day on rocky. Top back on again paul. You know. I think that the part that i guess is maybe the most surprising to me is the phil fulmer component Because as you know we talked about the past you know there's obviously been you know. Rumors swirling about tennessee. Possibly moving on from jeremy pruitt for a while. I think a lot of people in the industry thought when that first report came out that tennessee was looking into Potential recruiting violations under pruitt that was signaling that they would like to fire pruitt with 'cause a four forecast which you know they've made very clear that is what they are doing. The former component is a little different because he is such legendary person with that blake department From his time as a football coach and you saw today in that press conference just the these university leaders really going out of their way to praise him and talk about how he's at tennessee. Ledge all those different things. So i think you know fomer kind of getting pushed aside Calling it a retirement. But i think there's a little more to that is probably the most interesting component of this to me because now it means you not only have to fire new. Find a new football coach but you also have to find a new ad. Do you think john. It was the contract extension. That former gave jeremy pruitt attorney was the final tipping point for him. I would imagine it's probably a lot of different you components to it because you know hey we have to remember this. Was you know fomer higher to begin with you know as that whole crazy. Coaching search point out and former becomes. Ad then hires jeremy pruitt. I also think. I mean if you were watching that press conference today paul. You know felt like you know so. It's still in some ways defending pruitt. They're asking him about how pruitt would be remembered and he talks about how you know recruiting had been good Which is obviously ironic considering that they fired him in part because of recruiting violations and fired nine people in total also tied the recruiting department But also just the way that he was talking about how pro had rebuilt relationships and all these different things it felt like to me at least that former was not out on pruitt as a higher to that point. So you know part of it could have been simply that you feel wasn't ready to move on from pruitt and it s part became what we're gonna make just wholesale changes here and i think if you remember paul you know one of the reasons why earlier in the year before we knew about all these recruiting violations. I was always a little skeptical. Pruitt getting fired in part because it would reflect poorly on former. And i didn't think four would want to move on from his higher Like you said he just gave an extension to after only three seasons as the head coach

"So that's unusual number one to have that many informants in a group But number shoe. What were these other two informants doing. And why isn't the government detailing that if it's going to acknowledge that they were there and obviously that issue will be who suggested this law. And who was the driving force behind it. And if it was a government agent than i have concerns even if If these people were engaged in some kind of illegality around weapons trafficking or manufacturing explosives or attempting to the government shouldn't be inventing these big plots to get better headlines. A couple of questions here. Then i got one more question. I think So this is from lavar onto c- considering all the years seem that Considering all all of your experience and knowledge over the years do you think that the behaviors thoughts beliefs. A white supremacist and racist should be considered a mental illness. I think they tried to do that. Back in the seventies to build an awful lot of medalists who should clearing zone ma. A mental illness. I think our country struggles with having a frank discussion about racism and white supremacy in our society and and we all suffer as a result And it was interesting joining these groups. Because i went into it thinking this kind of fringe belief system. That's a little twisted crazy. Where what they showed me immediately were history books where it was the prominent people of the day. You're at supporting the ideologies philosophies. The allergy is that they hold and they accurately pointed to you know this span of history instead only since the civil rights act nineteen sixty four than that anybody in in light society agreed with this idea of divers multicultural society right our laws were strictly against it until the civil rights act and they look at as a bad experiment that if only we hadn't gone in that direction instead had doubled down on jim crow and legal white supremacist enforced by law enforcement. Everybody would be happier today. You know in that. These are the troves they use still here. Whether it's that black people were were were happy when slavery existed. You know they were treated well. These kinds of false arguments that that try to reimagine white supremacy is.

"It's it's pronounced mar maria maria. So i apologize for that so Thank you so much for the question. I want to talk to you a little bit about As you what you talk about before this administration given oxygen to these to these people We know that in After the election of obama There was a spike in in Hate groups you. You mentioned that Even the even the obama administration did not do enough to clamp down on these types of groups and their infiltration of law enforcement And it seems as this as if this administration is given a full out bullhorn to to to these people. So can you talk about that a little bit sure and why it's dangerous So when i was doing this work in the nineteen nineties and i was working on joint. Terrorism task forces so state and local law enforcement and other federal agencies were paying loves with on those cases. the police understood the tactics that the far-right militant groups engaged in one of them was to host rallies or marches in places where they knew they had political opposition. Right every these groups. We weren't gonna go to some very conservative. Very white community to hold a rally they would go to someplace that was very diverse in very progressive. And the reason for that was the purpose of it was to draw out political opposition that they could then tack right and make it look like oh. This is just a boisterous Rallied but they're gonna come with picket signs in. We're gonna have knives and guns and it's not going to be fair fight so the police understood. That acted might remember the greensboro massacre in late eighties In the ninety s when this please understood that tactic and understood which group were the instigators. This is a group coming in from outside mike trying to instigate trouble in my community We have to let them run their first amendment rights to hold the march. But we're not gonna let them hurt anybody and we're going to get them out of town as quickly as possible and if they do hurt anybody or if they bring people who have warrants out against them war who have otherwise engaged in violence. We're going to be ready to address data immediately So what i saw after. Donald trump started running for president. Was you know making these racist comments that these groups interpreted as support for their viewpoint or at least support enough that their viewpoint got mainstream media attention right a lot of these groups I can call myself ahead of the klu klux klan. And nobody's gonna sam not right for my for my region on the klu klux klan. Nobody's gonna say oh. No you're not you after. You have to fill out this questionnaire joins now i can just start wearing a robe and and maybe i have no followers but if the news media comes to me and says oh you're the head of the klu klux klan here locally what do you think about donald trump now all of a sudden. I'm getting a message out..

"That. He's one of these people You know. I don't want to put that put that message out there In your estimation from your work How big of a problem is this. Or how small of a problem is how many officers wanted their million officers or something like that and united states. Something like that In what would you say the percentages and is any. When it's hell or you know. I try to be as empirical kid be in doing this kind of analysis and the problem is we just have no idea because nobody's looking right. We there are a number of researchers at who got humanity the dozens or so cases that that That bubbled to the surface end result in some public scandal up. But nobody is going to these lease agencies relooking and of course we know that that police officers who report their fellow law enforcement officers for for any kind of misconduct. A whether it's racial or not don't tend to be treated very well. repressive layer on top of the wording. The only thing i can say for certain is that it's a persistent problem. Because i was warned about this when i was negligent working. These cases in the early nineties again in the late nineties A report bed caja public awareness through the freedom of information act in two thousand six warned about it and in twenty fifteen at the fbi counter terrorism policy guide a lead to the media and also warned about this problem. So if it's a problem that significant enough for over a twenty year period the fbi is warning. Its own agents that it's problem. I think is problem that we have to have a national strategy to address agreed agreed and and one thing is law enforcement has to be part of that solution right. They can't happen unless law enforcement is on board number one acknowledging its problem into taking the steps necessary to eradicate it. You mentioned a kind of in passing. I want to dig into this a little bit. The the difference between those who actually joined a group the kkk the problem boys etc those who are just racist elaborate about that a little bit. Sure i think people have a even people who claim to be experts terrorism and Look at this stuff seed. These organizations like the organizations we see in the rest of our lives right that in the fbi. The police wanted no. Our organization has a director and then assistant directors than this hierarchy. What's the hierarchy of those organizations. And they don't have them. In many cases you know they intentionally avoid that kind of organization because it creates liabilities for them So they have. What is a a wireless resistance model. Where they wanna break into small cells and they're much more mission oriented than ideological right. David the the world is on a precipice in we want to trigger the race war. So we're going to focus on you know how we're gonna go bomb this black church and you don't like anything like you wouldn't expect a a group of marines to know the geopolitical strategy for for why were invading this country right..

"But You know he he going around and giving speeches and everything like that. Yeah yeah it was definitely oh definitely if you look at the small number that are sovereign citizens. It looks like okay that that's a manageable problem without having to look at the communities that are terrorized by this much population of people who are of like mind. Bet that don't necessarily always target least officers that you could your police managers could then say well. Let's focus on this smaller problem. Rather than that. Bigger problem i listened to another podcast And it was. It was by a number of police officers and they were talking about The rise in hate crimes and they were kind of they were. And i wanna be sensitive to these guys but about but i was also very annoyed because they were making. It seem as if there's not a rise in the number of incidents of hate crimes Of course against the public But but they but the fbi and government agencies are increasing or opening up the umbrella as to what classifies as a hate crime and. I'm thinking and they're going through stats about okay. Well i if you compare this to the nineteen seventies it's only because You know We've expanded definition of what a hate crime is. That's why it looks like so much more today than it was in the nineteen seventies which to me is ludicrous argument. I mean but but this is the argument that all the police officers are making so again. Here's the point that some people just don't see it as a problem right exactly and try to minimize it when fact it. It's fascinating because part of the problem that makes it hard to know whether a crimes arising or fall in is that we don't have good data sets by any. It tends to be when the media is paying attention to hate crimes. Then policymakers have to pay attention it crimes than the police have to pay attention to hate crimes in his starts to look like it's going up when it might be more active enforcement but if you look at it year to year there's a persistent level of violence that were not count right so we know that only twelve and a half percent. A police department's report hate crimes to the federal government. So that data set they're talking about is twelve percent of the whole right right right right..

"Durga so you wrote a number of articles in. I had a hard time trying to get through a mall and got your to your book yet. So i apologize. I always ask people's book But one of the ones that really caught my attention was white to premise links to law enforcement urgent concern and that was by in september And selective when. I decided to reach out to you about so. Can you talk to us just a little bit about you. Know why you wrote the article where you hoping to accomplish sure So it was that that report. That article was based on a report. I wrote called hid in plain sight. Racism white supremacy aright militancy in law enforcement and it was actually the third in a series that i'd written over the last two years that were in response to the end of the obama administration. The justice department was advocating for for broader domestic terrorism powers. Arguing that the reason that they didn't Prosecute white supremacists vary off in was because they didn't have abroad domestic terrorism statute and since i had done the work since the nineteen nineties i knew there were plenty of federal statutes that could be used to address white. Supremacist violence so. I wrote the first report all wrong. Priorities biden areas that detail all the federal statutes that were available to domestic terrorism prosecutions and And how those statutes work in practice And explained that it was actually policy choices. The fbi ingests army was making did that. Reduce the chances that white supremacists violence violence would be prosecuted at than the second report was fighting far-right violence and hate crimes focused on state and local response to hey kind of non-response to hate crimes i should say and then In trying to come up with what the issue was a real really the issue was that when law enforcement has a tendency to to win both ways right that if they do something really well everybody pass them on the back and gives them more resources more authority and if they do something really poorly they say well. It's it's the tools that are the problem. You've got to get a better tool. So they get more resources in were so whether they're good or bad they get more. So the purpose of this last were on actual white. Supremacy law enforcement was highlight that this is something the fbi warns its agents of repeatedly and unfortunately that the way the fbi looked at the issue is that it's a threat to the integrity of fbi investigations rather than a threat to the public that these white supremacist law enforcement officers sir So it in my mind if if it's important enough for the fbi to warn its own agents about it. It's important enough for the public to be aware of it and to make sure that we're actually enacting national policies to address and address the threat hosting meetings. So that's very interesting in. I wanna stressed out to the audience. There that The reports that were released were aimed at telling the fbi agents These people compromise your investigations or indoor threat to you but not so much a threat to the public offering..

"We'll be back in coaching a year from now whereabout about Bob. Stitches interesting, you know, he's going to play. He's he's going to coach in that XFL next year. So that would keep him out of coaching for another year. But I I think once he gets the tasted it will. He wanted to get back or not my stoops's difference stoops to me missed it. But I don't think he missed he missed it to the obsession level that urban Meyer will miss it. Thank you. Thank you. Great to hear from you. We're up against a break. More to come here in the final segment a good show on a Wednesday early April. We are coming right back to listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. We're back in Swami is in Tennessee. And you are next up Swami get after noon. Hey, how's it going? It's great. You know, there's a lot of Tennessee chatter yesterday and today, and you know, sometimes these Tennessee fans amazing me, I mean, they absolutely let Rick Barnes for years ago. And really what was Phil fomer supposed to do? I mean was going to be the day to let a man and only four years and he's had two the best five seasons in Tennessee history. Now, I got towels is, you know, you don't pay him a me or even by the way. I I don't know. I don't blame. I don't blame fill up at all. I really don't. He had to be. I don't want to say, I I don't know what happened, and you know, you I mean, it's a double edged sword. I'm more interested in really why rebar was that interested in living. They say, you know, Tennessee fans, we're football's cool. Really? I no, no, no. After after field left. Look at the coaches they powered dirt do the lane kiffin boots Jones. Jeremy Pruitt coming. All of these people are forced to fifth tier level coaches at any major school like how state or Texas ain't or Alabama. But, you know, even look at and that's the top of coaches, they're going to serve for there's there's a number ASCA. You know? That's what Tennessee is right now. I mean least Nebraska did hire Scott frost. They did. He was in demand. But I do that Kelly Johnny hired. Yeah. You know? Listen, I I understood the criticism booked, and I I know I'm a sucker for this. Just like, you are you know, what I'm about to say when we when we listen to her earlier today, she won me over and you're not supposed to let emotion, but I but I saw pet summit. "Zoe. John Williamson to all of college basketball by storm bowl by God. I don't know that you've seen anything like this. It seemed nothing could stop Duke from cutting down the nets besides perhaps an exploding shoe slipping and injured on Williamson. The injury heard round the world sidelines. I on and leaving many to question if he should even come back to play for Duke at all. To play. Hello. He shouldn't play. But he did with thority steel. The pig is officially back over or it's smart like a low play would do Don. On the blue devils to the AFC championship and the top seed in the tournament. But that's where the challenge began fortunate bounces again GMC and Virginia Tech leapt Duke against the number two seeded Michigan state Spartans with a chance to tie the game. Duke now would not be so lucky RJ Barrett's free-throw bounced out sending Duke out of the tournament through everything together are very as I RJ and Cam British poll figure to depart for the NBA. We are left to remember a super teeth at one. Let me bring in Seth Greenberg. My uncle south no relation. And it was such an extraordinary ride watching this team all year long. And then the season comes to an end one point short of the final four. So Seth from your perspective. What went wrong for Duke? Why didn't they win it? Their inability to execute score in the half court. If you think about they were two hundred and sixteenth in points per possession in the half court. That's not championship basketball. This is a team that had size strength athleticism. But for some reason they didn't play too. They read five place rarely scored out of a set they mostly played out of concepts. And I'll get to that later. But this is a team went the end of the game. You gotta get demoting zion's hands on the block at the you've got to create obviously opportunities for RJ Barrett to make plays two hundred sixteenth point per physician in half court. They were behind Oklahoma. Oh, by the way, trae young wasn't it Oklahoma anymore. Let's get. To what you were going to get to a moment ago, though. And that is the way if you look at it coach K's coaching has changed. It is my opinion. He's the greatest college basketball coach of all time. And you went head to head with them for years when you were at Virginia Tech. But I know you're gonna tell us that his coaching philosophy has changed. How it has changed? I think the Olympic spirits changed coach K, and you know, the better players have some people say less you need to coach them. Look. They played really hard defensively where a change was offensively. They played bore out of concepts and spacing and less out of sets. And because they played quote, unquote, position lists basketball. There are a lot of times that players were not in positions to play to their strengths. They couldn't really dictate the shot of where they wanted to get the ball when they wanted to get the ball or so instead of running sets and sledding guys being executed, the they more of a concept team and a position team. And that's why too many times so Williamson thirty feet from the basket, and they didn't really get him. The ball wearing needed to get the ball when they needed to get in the ball. All right. So the. Next time, we see basically all of those guys will be on the next level. The other big story from the sport yesterday's we sort of had this little downtime before the final four is Kentucky coming off that tough loss put into any talk of John Calipari going to UCLA or anywhere signing him to a long time shoes me a lifetime contract..

"That's exactly right. I mean, make America great again. Oh, you can't use it. Can you know? But anyway, will you can I don't know why. I mean, you're making more a great move forward than anyway, another topic. You know fall. I mean, I heard you talking earlier to Bernie, and you would think emerging since he's talked to you once before he would kind of get the fact that you were nailing him down to the floor. But he didn't he didn't. He didn't quite you. But I am by the end of that call Bernie was debtor than the Bernie on weekend at Bernie's. Yes, he was. Yes. He was he. And then, you know, like a true heavyweight you were not there and danced around for round two. And you in that, you're ready. You're ready for the punch and now well, I was paid to go fifteen rounds. And I gave I gave the audience what they paid me for you. That's right now you ready for knockouts not got. So not heard us talking about Auburn, Kansas. Now, I agree with you Paul Kansas played a young freshman team. But all day long, Kansas blew up blue blood, and they're young. There's and they're better than what ninety five percent of the young freshman around the country and all these basketball schools. Something like that. Something like that. Then really big numbers. And you ought to agree with me. This ain't Bernie you're talking to. And this ain't the first time I've called you up. I'm gonna call you again tomorrow and every day for the rest of your natural life war damn eagle have a little bit nervous about what happens beyond my natural life. I may will still be knocking on my door. He will who's that. Knockin? Rob is up next. Rob go right ahead. You're on the air. Hey, thank you very much for taking my call. Thank you. Earning. Hey, I'm willing to know what you thought of that Holly Warlick interview after the game when she threw the team under the bus saying they had to do more on their own time. And that they had to come back and start a new coach. I don't see how you going to do it after seven years wanting to know what you thought about that. And what was her name Westbrook? She said that the off court stuff from the staff was getting to be ridiculous, and she wouldn't say anymore. And I wanted to know what you think about Fulmer is he going to our real ringer of coke or Willie try to hire another assistant. You know, I don't know what coach fomer is thinking he has yet to make a public comment on Holly Warlick situation. I mean, I think it's time to make a decision not my decision to make what it is. But but I think the longer distracts out and I have a hard time believing. It's going to drag out very long. I'm sure they have a plan up there and. Get real upset. Wanna mayo cokes those team under the bus? But that's exactly what holiday did. And it burned me up and one more thing. I'd like say congratulations to Rick Barnes and the Tennessee vol's. I think they're gonna make fun of war. Okay. So they deserve it. Appreciate the call more to come. Dan, dockage Kyle Tucker, Bruce Pearl among our guests as we're we're still young to show them Monday. We'll talk to Dan dockage, what kind of job is Alabama back. We have made it to the second hour and there were some moments during the first hour. I wasn't really sure that would happen. It was a feisty first hour, and you can call me Vernon welcome back. Bruce, Pearl later on more guests to come including Dan dockage. We'll talk about the cats and the PJ Washington situation. Your phone calls at eight five five to four to seven to eight five and clay is up next in Tennessee, Oakley. Hi, how are you, sir? We are. Great. Thank you. I want to comment on the end of the Duke UCF game that last play when Duke was behind by what three Zayn had the ball. He he lowered his shoulder in ran over that guard just inside the foul line. I mean, just it was blatant. Of course, when he got to the goal of the fall, taco fog. I was inside that protective circle..

"I loved it while I was in it, and it's young sport. I started my twenties which the perfect time to start in Iran with it. You know, fun to twenties greatness thirties in the forties. And it was okay by my fifties. My this is a young man sport. I was done. I wasn't built that making that term into work in the movies. So any free time, I stopped making things I didn't make for the pleasure. The joy more and downtime. I was unemployed for duration of time. And it just wouldn't make for myself. "Football you can freely admit that it's stupid and stupid. I am that type of person. I play my homes. It's a great way to see them the way, I lost this year was absolutely maddening. It was peak stupid fantasy football. So anyway, we need to get into talking about some pitchers. We've got on tap today is something that I think's pretty interesting. We're gonna talk about some potential SP strikeout. Risers some guys who can can really push their strikeout rate up in twenty nineteen based on any number of factors. No, maybe just getting a chance to flash their stuff longer a pitch that maybe didn't get fully highlighted in eighteen that's gonna take off in nineteen. Maybe they were just under performing they're swinging strike rate. And we think, hey, if they kind of bring this all together, they can really boost their strike are a lot of different avenues to doing this. And of course, there's going to be some that just surprise us. They add a pitch that we don't know about yet. And they really take off. But we've got our groups here that we're going to talk about and they're going to range really from top to box. I've got some deep deep cuts here. And even some of the guys up at the top end. We're not going to dive into deeply on because we talked about them. And one of the things we wanna avoid because we go all all winter. We don't wanna get fatigued on on certain guys and Julius constantly talk about Jameson time. He is on our list. But we've made that point right that beautiful slider that he really dove into asked year was fantastic a full year with it, perhaps honing even more this season. That's great. We love Jameson town. But we don't really need to spend a lot of time on him people understand that we like him. So we're going to get into more of the meat of guys that we like saw. Going to go ahead and kick it off to you towns. My first one can just quick hid her. There was your first guy that you're really looking at as a potential strikeout gainer for nineteen. I mean, we there are a couple of guys that we're going to go quickly through. So I figure we should at the very least just talk about Michael fomer very quickly yet again. Toffees? Yeah. I it slider is a money pitching. I don't have it ready. I'm really sad about that right now. But now he's coming back from knee surgery, as well, he'll says a full year removed from owner nerve transposition surgery now, which means that he's going to have much better feel of his fingers now for that change of the used to be such a pitch in the past. So I see a guy that has been sub twenty percent carry in really should be hinting twenty five percent of my mind. So just definitely there. There's also Michael Clemenger, or my Clemenger that I think you wanna talk about a little bit more than a little deeper into that. But someone needs to get mentioned. Yeah. I mean, I think there's a thirty percent upside here we've seen twenty seven and twenty six the last two years. That's fantastic. Have you just repeats that? I don't think anybody's really complaining, but there is actual upside here with with cleven during anything, that's why most of us. Love him will really kind of boosting him up our rankings of been if you're in that second tier of pitcher. You can look to clemency put up a two hundred innings season last year. It was excellent. He does get a little overshadowed by his rotation mates there. And frankly, that's great that kind of keeps them a little bit more hidden for us not that he's some super sleeper or anything. But I don't know that he goods that. He goes for the price that he absolutely should the depth of his arsenal. With the with the three off speed pitches is such that again he could clock a thirty percent rate now like his rotation mates. The fastball isn't isn't great. That's just of something that they have their where their fastballs aren't that? Great. But then their secondary arsenals are incredible. And he's got a brilliant slider. Backs up with a true curveball. Sometimes guys have hybrid breaking balls like his own teammate, Corey kluber is just the breaking God. But the slider and curveball are definitely distinct in a change up that he really started to work in their last year for clemency..

"Rebecca, this may be awkward for me to try to explain why people are being critical of me. But I'll give it a shot. I think I think Alabama fans, and you know, probably that I lived in that state for many many years, I still consider it my home, even though I don't have a residents. They're they're they're upset, and they hear things some some some of them here things the way they they want to hear things I don't take it personally. I mean became a little overwhelming last night. But it's not going to last. I think I think Nick Sabin isn't going to be deterred by this for long. And I think as soon as he gets his staff in order, which he will shortly. The story and the page will change and turn. Well, I was just variance upset and ours. Really embarrassed that some of the callers and they're coming and yes, we did. He said Yang. But it certainly wasn't gerbil. Well, yeah, I understand that. It's just that's just that's what happens, and, you know, I think I have to be cognizant of fans feelings, and I guess if I didn't understand the Alabama fans as as as well as I do would probably be more upset, but but I really appreciate what you said though, that means a lot to me. It has to do with the lady balls basketball and the saddening. Thing that they're going through with three straight losses, and it the worst they've been I think it's not paying eighty six. I would just like to get your info on what you think needs to happen. 'cause if it was football and the records are being a lot that they would already have gotten rid of the coach. And I know that miss Pat was hard to replace because she was wonderful and wonderful with the community. But sometimes we have to step back and look at the programs and reevaluate though, I was just wanting to kind of get your opinion on that. And. Follow that program, very closely. And I know coach Warlick well known her a long time. And and I think these are these are decisions you do have to evaluate. You cannot am I giving you a line here. That's not how I work. You can't evaluate in mid season. But you can begin to digest the information. And I'm sure coach fomer and others up. There are concerned. I mean, I thought coach Warlick was probably fortunate to survive last year because of the way things have gone, I think the year before it ended better. And and she got a reprieve, but but there is a lot of tension up there. And to me Tennessee is a program that should be playing for championships every year. There's there's no excuse. I mean, the support of that basketball program. I is unparalleled and forget the Detroit. Bishen in history. We all know about that. So you either get the job done. Or you don't. And if you don't and you face face the music very loudly. I totally agree. And I agree the tradition stand strong, and it always has. But there's also a winning tradition there. And we've getting the five star recruits that she get. I think she I think because I I've talked to Holly often when we see her. I think she's continued to recruit at a very high level. Yes. You have to develop that talent and you have to deliver. And they're you know, listen doesn't matter whether we like it or not everyone likes her. That's not those are things you say early on in a career when you're trying to give somebody a chance to develop. But but I think she's facing a very critical six weeks here. Coli agree. And like you said, she's very lockable person..

"fomer" Discussed on Max & Murphy on Politics

"Okay. Just around out. Yeah. Like advocate discussions in terms of talking about political news of this new year, which is not even forty eight hours old yet. But Julia Salazar the the new state Senator from district here in Brooklyn has endorsed money. Williams city council member four public advocate, and listen, Mark Viverito. The fomer city council speaker has announced that she is running on the fix MTA line as mentioned earlier candidates cannot run on a party line for this nonpartisan elections, so they can designate parties specific to this race and thinks MTA will be Melissa Mark Viverito 's line to contest in that matters for maybe a tiny. Any bit of media buzz? It matters when they're carrying around these petitions sheets, and they it says it on there. So it may be a few voters attention. You know, when you sign a petition sheet for a candidate or a campaign, you're just helping them get on the ballot. You're not promising to vote for them. So you know, if she's sort of showing yourself and just saying that people at subway stops in in housing complexes etcetera. Hey helped me get on the ballot and people see, oh, you're running on the fix the MTA line. You know, that's a little bit. Catchy. And then it will also appear on the ballot itself. If there I don't I don't know who's going into the voting booth undecided in special election. You know, if you're going out to vote in a special election, you're probably going out with candidate in mind, but it can't hurt to have something. Catchy. Interesting party line attached. You're just as the Monica vice? Yeah, total and we'll see what the other candidates come up with. When we talked to council member roughly Espinel later in the show will ask him what his party line is going to be the Julia Salazar endorsement is something else will have to ask Mr. s. Banal about because her state Senate district in his city council district overlap. I think to a significant degree. So maybe he can explain why his council colleague won her endorsement, and he did not. So let's let's move towards our topic for the first part of the show here. Let's get back to governor Cuomo before we start talking with a little bit of our take on the governor. We want to invite you to call in we want to hear from you. Could sonic hedgehog be the answer to hair loss?

"Led by doctor Miami ITO activated the sonic hedgehog signaling pathway, which is used by cells to communicate with each other. I don't know what it sounds like beep beep, maybe sounds like that I don't know advice sparking the communication between. These cells hair regrowth was observed within four weeks in the mice hair roots and shaft structure started to appear after nine weeks. According to the trial published in the journal nature communications, scientists have until now assume that scarring collagen, build damaged skin would never be grow hair. But now it's like, no, maybe we can. So Dr ITO said now, we know it's a signaling issue and cells that are very active as we develop in the womb, much less. So when mature skills as we age, they see our results show that if we stimulate blow fiberglass with a sonic pathway, it could trigger hair growth, not previously seen in wound. Healing. So anybody who had a burn trauma skin graft? Now, some people say, well guys, you know, those kind of a lot much knew about, you know, who cares if you don't have hair, you know, then you don't have to shave Harris protective. We really underestimate the value of hair hair protects us from cancer. UV rays hair protects us from cold from pathogens Harris, very protective, and so not having it also allows moisture escape. So this is huge. You know? And there's a lot of men that lose their hair. I still think that look sexy. I think Bowman of sexy. But you know, there's there's a lot of people that there could be a there could be a. A definite demand for something. Like this. So are there risks? Well, sometimes as you would think of something signaling cells to grow and become active. You worry about cancer. So they're hoping that this doesn't do that. They're hoping for just fiberglass. We're not looking at cancer. But. They're only trying to affect fiberglass located just beneath his conservative. So they're not as a hopefully, we're not gonna be juicy Leipold sarcomas or anything like that. So the doctors goals to identify likely drug targets for hair regrowth.
