Florida School Board to Require Masks Despite Ban

"In California and Illinois head back to school in a few weeks, they will have to wear masks Florida and Arizona. Meanwhile, band mask requirements in schools. Some districts there are insisting on them anyway. Schools are reopening just as the rise of the more contagious Delta variant shifts. The fight against Covid 19 masks are back on top of the policy agenda and confusion reigns. It's a story by Ben Chapman, Education reporter at The Wall Street Journal, then explain Well, Basically, the situation is different, depending on where you are. And the solutions to the question of how to stop. The spread are all over the map. Um, students in California, Um and Illinois are required to wear masks in New York City. They'll be required to where mass as well. Then there are places like Florida and Arizona that have banned masks, Um out mask requirements in schools. And, um, you know, some districts there are requiring masks anyway, so it's kind of a scattershot situation in California. Some districts don't want to be part of the Of the mandate there, and at least one district is suing to try and exempt itself. So, um, it's a chaotic situation. Holy cow, even in Florida. Uh, that's your referenced. Did you say some students can transfer if they're not happy with a mask policy? It looks like that is the case. Um, On Friday, the Florida Board of Education issued an emergency order that lets parents transfer their Children to another school if the student has been subjected to harassment for choosing not to wear a mask at school, so That is the case.

"I just got a police our way out of it like the you know. No one's going to get an argument from the west chicago. East side of baltimore's underinvested like clearly. It has been for seventy years. But i just gotta go out there and do my job. So don't talk to me about all this sort of like liberal investment stuff on on some level big gotta point if you wanna complain about the way. The budgets are abortion. It doesn't make sense to go to. The people who got the money should go to the people who are making decisions about where the money goes. As when i talked to a police chiefs and and union votes. They say the same thing only. What's what's what's in front of bust. I think that's exactly right because part of what we gotta do right now. We've got to change the logic of what is the problem. How do we get out if the problem is that some folks just love to crime need to stop. That is police. This is exactly the right side of things and you know tough on crime is the right way to go. But if the problem is we've given a bunch of people terrible options and they make some choices within their right. Well then we gotta change their options and that's the root causes of violence. Nobody thinks the root cause of violence is simply. They'll cops around because then we have problems in bridgeport the same way that we have in boss brady. Where do you see the com- this conference. I mean. there are a lot of talk to in this sort of activists world organizer world. Who are worried about the conversation on crime because we you know i wrote a whole book about it in two thousand seventeen called the nation which is about like watching the crack panic of new york city when i was thirteen years old in my city when they were really more like a crazy number of homicides really did get very dangerous in new york and it turned into the machinery that produced the kind of mass incarceration state that we now have. Yeah i mean the great irony here is that we have a lot of people setting prescriptions for communities that they are not part of and then when those communities actually speak up for ourselves. People don't want to invest in the solutions that we have built the fact of the matter. Is we actually can have communities from the ground up if we get to these root issues. That phil is talking about and organizers activists that is all we have been pushing for. We want safe streets. We want safe communities. Many activists and organizers in this movement are survivors of a criminal activists ourselves. The bad the matter is we know personally what this feels like end still we believe sped faith communities does not mean lock more more of our people it safe communities actually means investing in our people. So we're very tired of being the punching bag and the punchline of far too much political rhetoric that blames us for things that are not our fault and fails to spotlight the continued abandonment of our communities. We wanna get to these root issues probably more than most people and we want to actually make sure that the funding and resources that we deserve to do that are had by our communities. Philip a tuba gov britney pack coming a great to have you guys back to keep this conversation going. It's not going where appreciate thank you ahead former dnc chair. They get stomped like it or not because. That they're deserving based on the schedule that they play in the number of power five opponents that they play. Well, you you get into your deserving stuff you're getting into this. I mean, here's the thing though. I would make the argument that you're wrong. One hundred percent at that. Oklahoma would probably get beat by Alabama by a greater margin than Michigan in last week's game proves that out what last week did when they when Alabama. I'm speaking of played Mississippi State, Mississippi State got a very good defense. And what did they do basically stop Alabama? When you've got a great offense averaging over fifty points in your health to about twenty five or under. That's basically stopping that offense you home to half of their they score zero. Oh, okay. That's Mississippi say they can't play offense out of a wet paper. Okay. LSU on listen, listen author. I've got a scenario here where Michigan Georgia. Clemson these Notre Dame. There's actually a crack in the foundation of Alabama. And that is the fact that you can if you play dominant defense, actually, stop them. I would make the argument that Michigan's offense is much better than Mississippi State. Clearly, Georgia's is I think that there's more argument that that Michigan would have a better chance Alabama, then then Oklahoma based on a home cannot stop a breeze like they can't stop anything. Did you see what they did last year Taylor? Cornelius through for five hundred yards on them. He is a hundred excellent prospect the point being this. No, you think I'm just being frivolous. "I i have no good solution for you i i hate to let the cat out of the bad right from the beginning but i don't have any good solution for you so let me just read for you what has happened and then we will discuss a little bit before moving on it says there's a young kid nineteen years old former student of this high school in florida his name is nicholas cruz and nicolas crews had been expelled from school because he had apparently been they're they're not sure yet because they haven't released the all the information but he was expelled either for making threats the students or he was exposed he was expelled because he brought ammunition to school or something along those lines but he has apparently been a problem child for a long time lot of red flags about this kid he was very very troubled young man right and even going so far as a mississippi bail bondsman and frequent youtube lager noticed and alarming comment a left on his own one of his videos last fall it says i'm going to be a professional school shooter in his name was nicholas cruise now this is a there we we guess that this is the same nicholas crews that just recently shot at the school could be somebody totally different now this wagner whose name has been the night that's a been been night that's all right name he alerted the fbi emailed screen shots to the uh of the common to the bureau's tips account as well as calling the mississippi fbi field office so this guy actually did the right thing z you'll never get me to read the comments on a youtube h ever because it is a gigantic cesspool you the very worst human beings on earth post on youtube videos that's not to say that everybody who poses a terrible human being i'm just saying the very worst among us and up going around youtube videos and posting comments they're just disgusting human beings with i mean because they the thing is is not like facebook.

"All right if i have i done anything false in your opinion or or irresponsible in my analysis of this situation doctor is going to make a few comments number one i just wanna say thank you to the men and women of the broward sheriff's office if done a tremendous job uh they're just real heroes and their heroes every day uh number two i want to say that i think that was a really detailed and thorough analysis i actually haven't heard anything that detailed on any of the other networks so i think that was really really done well thank you a point one um i do think that we should raise the gun age because as you said various stupidly the brain doesn't really finish matt maturing until about age 25 and we know that the part the last part of the brain to develop is something called the prefrontal cortex which is responsible for things like controlling your impulses and decisionmaking and so i think an older gun age would be something that would certainly benefit society but what i don't agree with is having a watch list because here's the reason built i think you're going to get a lot of false positives you know there are so many kids out there who are disillusioned who feel marginalized who are posting negative propaganda on social media but aren't going to be killing seventeen people at school so i think you're going to get a lot of people who alone let me just clarify i agree with you you would have to have a piece of information that was in an opinion.

"Information in their excuse me that raise issues are concerns 53 past the hour the satirical publication the onion has once again captured the frustration and futility felt by so many this morning following yesterday's tragedy in florida the side published the following headline as it does after every mass shooting changing only the dates the location of the violence and the number of individuals killed the article was first written after a college student killed six people stabbing three and shooting three others in the area around the university of california at santa barbara in twenty fourteen to quote the washington post the repetition seems to underscore this tragedy of what the article implies could be a solvable problem that mass shootings are regular facet of life in the united states the headline goes viral after every match shooting and last night who wrote that original headline fouryear ago tweeted out when i wrote this headline i had no idea it would be applied to the high school a mile from my house jason roeder john meacham uh i know you're you're leaving this hour what are your final thoughts this morning well i think we can't led the perfect vdma of the good and the people who are on the second amendment extremists side of this will say that you can never legislate complete safety that's true but let's say you save one life let's say one of these shootings as an happen that's worth the price and i would ask every lawmaker every put person in a position of power and if everyone who has any access to lawmakers a simple question do you wanna be on the side of an extremist lobby or do you want to be on the side of public safety it's a pretty straightforward call at this point.

"I get involved it seems highly unlikely but it certainly would it be a question for congressional oversight to now asked the question with that number of people at those senior levels who don't have full real security clearances how were how was classified material handled within the white house over the course of the past year the delegation's been on huge question john john young we have to talk about jared kushner you and i both know jared was the defacto secretary of state he was donald trump's go between between the president and waiting and the rest of the world he spoke we know had detailed conversations with china chinese leaders with russians with the saudis with the israelis with the united arab emirates you name it donald trump told jared eur my guy you're my go between jared would set up set up the calls he would talk to the people he is made no secret at all that he was working on middle east peace very close to the crown prince and in saudi arabia this guy had more access to foreign leaders and we have to all we have to assume top security the classified information so yes has to be that investigation us we investigation of everybody else around the president as well certainly and again it written now you get to the the sub sub element of this story which again kushner incredibly important element by i mean sub in the sense that there's this broader question of the ending of handling of classified material know the question specifically of him he's still only has an interim security clearance as you say joe given the level of things he was working on the types of things he was working on the idea that he was not looking at classified and highest level classgation material seems implausible and so then the question becomes not only is he mishandling classified material potentially again the question has to be asked but why is it that were a full year it's the administration and jared kushner does not have a full security clearance what are the issues there that are holding up that clear clearance we know he's got a complicated financial life and a lot of complicated issues to look into but it's been a year and it's pretty high priority so that raises a whole other set of questions as well as if we didn't have enough to worry about this.

"Talk to them about their important role i like to say this school safeties an inside job we gotta get a commitment first from the students then from the faculty parents in the in tyre community there are multiple things that need to be done but a lot of this does rest with students being connected to their schools students having close trust in relationship with the adults in their lives and students knowing to come forward immediately when somebody news engaging and talking about dangerous behavior in the air and in here from portland maine urine you're on the air hi gene i was my husband and i were talking to our 15yearold daughter last night as we watch the coverage and we were asking we asked her how she was feeling about it and she said that she felt helpless because our school the school that she and or other two children had attended over the last two years has not had a lock down drill and she expressed last night and today that she doesn't know what to do she wouldn't know what to do if this had happened at her school we are in maine we're in one of the best school districts up here and i just feel helpless as apparent aaron thank you sadly a lotta people sealant way curl in nashville i'm glad you called welcome to the program thank you is uh jane is it is absolutely the guns uh and and this is to ease of which we can do don let me explain uh the third baseman for the chicago cubs nine is chris bryant now by the age of twenty four hit accomplishments was world series champions rookie of the year and mvp at that age he's still could not uh in most places rent a vehicle for you're gonna tell me that that a multimillionaire mvp of league can't can't rent a car but a boy of eighteen year though could go and get a weapons of mass destruction listen thoughts and prayers are not working anymore uh we must called off the republican party we can't play this both sides do because this is really one political party in our country stand and with the nra and before anybody say that the in our a is allpowerful yes they're all powerful.

"Is put in the hands of a miserably unstable individual james thank you uh and you know s bob spitzer many of our listeners agree i'm seeing all the comments here it's not about the guns gets of a healthy issues surrounding the guns white right i am the caller just there was a final porn i think was the key one i mean it it is about the gun as soon as somebody like the shooter picks up and decide to do something you can't have a mere shooting without a firearm um so the it's not the totality of the issue most the vast majority of gun owners are responsible people who understand the guns are dangerously need to be handled properly and carefully but it is the intersection of firearms with people who have mental health issues and you want to sever that lincoln that's where laws and public policies can be effective in minimising or or uh of ride minimizing those potential troublespots attorney general jeff sessions i just spoke about this he said it cannot be denied that something dangerous and unhealthy is happening in our country we've got to confront confront the problem there is no doubt about it we at the justice department are going to make this a priority david hogan students who survived the mass shooting this just cross from nbc we don't need ideas david said he survived the shooting we need action we need action from our elected officials and we need action from the civic public because without that this is going to happen again here's alex in saint petersburg florida high alex you're on.

"Teens uh those with possible mental helmets and mental illness mourn behaviorally shoes and guns and that i think is is simply a way to stave off at least some of the kind of mass violence that that uh we've seen most recently yesterday some our website listener instance says what's wrong with his country australia has won horrible mess shooting and assault weapons are outlawed what are we waiting for deb says stricter gun control is the only option to curb this mindless gun violence with such lunatics having guns and killing randomly us does not need any external enemies something's got to give here let's get jim on this point seminal florida hi jim you're on the air are hygiene i totally agree with what the previous caller kathleen shut up a large percentage of the citizens in the country wanting more gun control but as long as our representatives jim why she turn can you can continue to take bribes from the nra uh that's not going to happen they have when they believe that money is more important uh danny kids getting killed in and they know how to solve everything but they have to start somewhere jim thank you here's james in charlotte north carolina high james you're on the air hi game so uh as tragic as this event is the reality is is every time we have a shooting in america it seems like people are blaming the gun not the people all we blaming heroin for the overdoses or blaming alcohol for the drunk driving accident oh we blaming the ocean rip kurtz for taking the victim out and drowning him no and and i don't have a solution to what the so it's stop all these shootings in america i really go um but it seems like it america we are only blaming the guns were not looking at the individual sprints and us military three days ago uh openly admitted that they failed to report fouls within dishonorably discharged members of the military to the fbi and the atf so is it the guns fall there that these people are still able to attain firearms no it's the people's falk so how can we as american start realizing that inanimate objects can cause no harm or less.
