"Carries on from there. I would presume. You would presume, but it's not that it's the no fun league, but you do get complaints from opposing players, opposing teams, the league is concerned about all of these delays. And in the off season, the NHL explicitly bans fans from throwing rats onto the ice during games, they threaten to expel, throw out any fan who doesn't, they also threaten to penalize the Florida Panthers with a delay of game penalty if any fans do it. So the tradition kind of dies down in that sense. But at the same time, I'm kind of surprised this work because as you said, you guys, hockey people, you're all savages, right? Like in their 20,000 to you at any given building, I'm surprised, honestly, that this was so effective, the policing and enforcing these rules. So Pablo, the fans never really get a chance to sustain this tradition because after they make the Stanley Cup final in 1996, they don't sustain success. They're cycling through coaches. Cycling through players, they make the playoffs one, two, three times, but they never went around again. So even when they win games and sometimes you see some wrath, it never becomes a true tradition because the team doesn't have a tradition of winning. Yeah, I mean, just last week, Emily, I do know that the Florida Panthers won their first playoff series since the NHL outlawed the rat throwing after that Stanley Cup final against the avalanche. And so how does this all land on our guys Scott Mellon be? I imagine there's a curse kind of a feeling here, like again, owing to the hockey superstition or how would you describe it? Well, for Scott, he's not someone who looks at the superstitions of it. We actually had to look up what his Chinese zodiac was. He was unclear. I believe he was a horse party animal. But for him, it's more so. I'm disappointed that the.

"This week, the Chinese calendar flip, and the Chinese went from the year of the pig to the year of the rat. It won't be the year of the cat until 1999, but the Florida Panthers don't have to wait for that. They've adopted the rodent in South Florida, and this could be their year. So the Chinese zodiac officially proclaims this. It's very on the nose. The way this story apparently has played out. So the clock strikes rat, Pablo. And the man who lived in Boca Raton, the rat's mouth and had a rotten festive house who murdered a rat in the locker room before the first home game has his best season ever, and the Panthers qualify for the playoffs as the fourth seed. They defeat the Boston Bruins in the first round. And that one. They upset the top seeded Philadelphia flyers in the second round. Two on one shot scores. Florida is going on to the Eastern Conference bottles for those take on the Pittsburgh penguins. They beat the Pittsburgh penguins in the Eastern Conference final. The finals as the Panthers have beaten Pittsburgh 21. And they now are appearing in the Stanley Cup final, which again, let's face it. It's pretty unprecedented success early on for an expansion team. We were kind of viewed as underdogs and over our head and this shouldn't be happening. And when's it gonna end? When is the Cinderella slipper come off? And it just didn't come off. And I also just looked it up. Emily, the Chinese zodiac has very different feelings about the rat than we do and Scott does apparently the rat is intelligent popular and loves attending parties and large social gatherings. Still not in, but thanks. But okay, hold on though, because the large social gathering that is the Stanley Cup finals. That's where we are now in this story, right? Like they're playing the Colorado avalanche and what game comes to mind when you think about it now. So Pablo, the Colorado avalanche are an awesome team. They also feel like a team of destiny, even if they don't have the Chinese zodiac sign on their side. And the first two games are in Colorado and the Florida Panthers lose pretty badly combined score of 11 to two,.

"All right, cabs. So Scott Mellon B, I understand he is our protagonist on this journey. But introduce us to him, tell me more about what kind of a player he was. To Scott Mellon B is a guy who played 21 years in this league 1400 plus games, 800 plus points, no schlub, but he did bounce around a bit. You know, and this was an era with really high offensive production and Scott was never necessarily the star point producer. He was a guy known more for his grit for his character for his heart. How would you describe your playing style? Aggressive? Combative. Tesla at center ice, Lawler and Mellon bay. The greatest quality I had as a player was competitiveness. Then we got a fight melon being a rabbit ramit took umbrage to the Buffy took from Mellon be after unloading the pocket factor he was double teamed I've heard people say that I played angry, so yeah, but I'd say, you know, aggressive and go to the net and that's where I swear to my goals, so definitely aggressive. Scott Miller heads towards the goal, Nina Byron, Scotty scored. Lamelo has just been a real dominant force, but his work ethic is disciplined defensively as really suited roger Nielsen. How does he end up with the Florida Panthers himself, Emily, going back in time here? So the Florida Panthers were an expansion franchise in 1993. Scott had just finished his 7th season in the league. He was with the oilers at the time, didn't have his best year 32 points in 69 games. He kind of had a feeling he was going to be exposed and he was. Yeah, and for people who don't know an expansion draft is when a new team enters the league in every existing team kind of has to give up one of their players for potential adoption. Exactly, Pablo, but what you need to know is now the expansion rules are much more favorable and teams like the Seattle kraken and Vegas golden knights can actually select a good players. Back then, it was much more limited. And if you're getting selected by an expansion team, it reflects pretty poorly on you. From Edmonton, Scott Mellon. Panthers select Scott Mellon bee from Edmonton. The next selection goes to the Anaheim mighty ducks. I was a little taken back and shocked. It was scary. I thought I might, I'm this close not out of the league because those teams really struggled. I felt like this could be it, you know? So obviously and Scott essentially says that being selected by an expansion team was like a death sentence. So that's the dynamic here where he is sort of the unwanted player. How is his arrival in South Florida? How does that feel? Well, he and his wife, they were newlyweds and let's face it. They're going from Edmonton, Alberta, so South Florida. I think lifestyle wise, they were excited about the new opportunity, maybe spending some time at the pool. It was an inauspicious start, though, Pablo, because they moved to a town called Boca Raton, which literally means rats now. Yes. Boca Raton means rat's mouth. Now I've also heard it means mouse mouth, but I'm going to go throughout some of 'cause it's better, you know. And as he's getting settled into this new home, soon enough that new home started living up to its name. The place I talked about that we lived in, we ended up with rats in the attic. We heard them in the attic and then the guy, the guy came and they were actually what they called tree rots that have the tails are the same length as their body. Exactly disgusting, right? As God is telling me this, Pablo, I'm an expressive person. I can't help myself. I'm making a disgusted face. Yeah, Emily, look, I'm a New Yorker. I know rats. I've seen rats. I'm terrified by rats. This is a nightmare. The guy came to how you got some tree rods. They set a trap, so we're in bed one night, sleeping, and all of a sudden we hear this. This flopping going on, right? This massive loud flopping because one of the rats that ended up in a trap. And the next day the guy came and he had this bag, this like white, almost like a pillowcase they beg and he took out and it was like, I mean, there was a couple of large beasts in there. And that was it. They had built in that hatred for rats right away. I think one of my most important questions I ask Scott Mellon being this entire interview was, are there any redeeming qualities to raps? And it took him a really long time to reply. What are some positive characteristics of a rat? When they're dead? That's good. I personally would have gone with how rats eat their own feces for nutritional value, probably. Or maybe that they have strong teeth that can chew through cinder blocks and aluminum and lead. Those are two redeeming qualities, but what about the fact that they can carry pizza down in New York City subway? That's a redeeming quality as well. Yeah, pizza rat, pizza at really does increase the respectability of a population that does not deserve any of it. I would say. But okay, Emily, before we fall into that, I was going to say rabbit hole clearly it's a rat hole. I do want to get back to the melon bees and to Scott moving homes because the Florida Panthers at the same time are also trying to welcome people into their new place, right? I mean, how is South Florida feeling about the Panthers? How much optimism is there? How much energy is there around this new franchise? So there's hope and optimism problem, but first the people in South Florida need to know there's a hockey team and there was a really big push just to publicize the fact that the NHL had come to South Florida. Scott talks about him and his teammates being trotted around on these little tours. They'd show up at malls. I just remember going to these malls. The one day it was like Maul day. So we were going like four different malls around South Florida, and it's like, you know, we go in, they have to sign up, you know, Florida Panthers, and we'd sit there and people could ask questions. And there was like 6 people. You know, let me go to other mall. There was 7 or 8 or 9 or ten people in the look on some of their faces like who the heck are these guys? You know, it's really a grassroots campaign to build excitement here. That said within the team, there were some belief that they could have something special because they had Bill Tory bob Clark and roger Nielsen running this team. Those are in Scott's words significant people who had been around the game for a long time. Bob Clark kind of set the tone to start. We got down to our team and clerk he was there and he looked around the room and clerk he was a man of few words, but he said we're not going to be a doormat for any team in this league and he walked out and that was the start of our team. And so the tone and attitude around the team was like, we're not going to be a typical expansion team. We might actually have a chance to be legitimate here and build something. Hockey in Miami, you bet. So the home debut of the expansion Florida Panthers opening it is always extra special. Kind of exciting because in their first two years, they're not bad. What's fun. The Panthers made by two. They narrowly missed the playoffs both times, but they're much more competitive than anyone expected from them or gave them credit for. Then entering the third season, something kind of crazy happened, and they fire roger Nielsen the coach. And the team.

"Emily Kaplan, do you have a hockey nickname? What do they call you? So probably if you were gonna go with the formula, I guess I'd be capper. I've heard that at the right before. Capsaicin that could be it as well. Yeah, yeah, yeah. See why is a very classic surname here in hockey? Yeah, all right, capsid. So I'm here to talk to you about a reporting trip that you recently made to a guy that I had no idea about. This guy named Scott Mellon bee. He's a former NHL player. The former star of a team that is super relevant now, the Florida Panthers, but he was relevant in like 96. So why are you there? What did you find? Thank you for telling on yourself that you were not paying attention to hockey in 1996. Last. He wasn't really paying attention. Towards the come on, let's get to it. Yeah, yeah. Touche. So Scott is somebody who has played in the league for 21 years. He went on to become a hockey executive after that. 95 96, Florida Panthers, Stanley Cup finals, those were really important years to me and my career and personally. He's had an incredible career with a ton of accolades, but he's not somebody who keeps a lot of memorabilia. So we show up at his house in Hudson, Wisconsin. It's a suburb of the twin cities in Minnesota. And he pretty much has like two pieces of memorabilia in his entire home. One is this big, heavy silver stick that he was awarded for playing in 1000 NHL games. And the other thing he has is this painting that the NHL pa gave to him is like this mural. And that's it. But then he says, I have something else. And it's hidden deep into his closet, so we go up to his attic at his office. He gets into this closet. I don't keep a lot of memorabilia to be honest, but this is kind of a neat piece. You got to be remembered for something and I guess this is my place in history, you know? It's hanging all this top shelf. It's just like kind of just sitting there. And it's this box and one side of it is glass. So you can see the items inside. And inside this glass box, Pablo, you're gonna get so excited for this, is a plastic wrap. A believe it's a rubber rat. This is the route that sat in the Miami you're in a dressing room for about three years. It is standing on a time legs and it's bearing its teeth. And next to that wrap is a square piece of drywall that's maybe about three inches wide. It's clearly been cut out from a wall. You got the drywall here that Scott tinkler or trainer circled to the sharpie. And written on in sharpie says, RIP rap one and the date. October 8th, 1995. And Pablo, if you look closely at this piece of drywall in very faint red, there's literal blood stains, this pink blood stains. Some really faded bloodstains number. That is blood. That's wrapped blood. Hold on. So there's a hunk of drywall and it's covered in actual red blood. Yeah, these are the hazards of the job Pablo. I am an investigative journalist and I come and see it all. But you know, this is important because this is a piece of history for the Florida Panthers franchise, this rap blood means something. And if you know anything about hockey people, they're very superstitious and to a lot of people, this rap blood from 1995, 1996 season, represents the last year relevancy and maybe a curse of why the.

"The Florida Panthers have won 11 games in a row and they set a record today Sure Most goals in a single season by a team in the salary cap era 322 pretty amazing what's going on in South Florida Yeah I think a lot of people believe that the Florida Panthers can win the Stanley Cup and kudos to Andrew brunette Can you talk about the Jack Adams trophy winner for NHL coach of the year Nick I mean I think a lot of people would have him as their pick I think Todd mcclellan these LA kings would be a good candidate as well We're going to get a nice and call here to the hawks as classic fired the puck ahead and missed everybody But Andrew Burnett taking over earlier in the season for former hawk head coach Joel glenville and all brunette has done has turned that team into a dynamic team Yeah they got a heck of a team but it takes a special coach to be able to keep all those egos in check and making sure you're putting the right players in the right spots to succeed I think you're exactly right Johnny I think he'll definitely be a finalist and like we talked about earlier three years ago the LA kings worsen their division two years ago third worst last year second worst and now this year they're probably going to finish third in their division It's really been an upward trajectory for this LA kings team but no doubt brunette mcclellan I would hope to see those two in the coach of the year Delia pops on the puck and the hawk crease they'll face off again in the circle who is right pull script on Andrew Burnett you know Nick he played his final season in the NHL with the Blackhawks 2010 2011 and he learned so much in that year from Joel glenville that influenced his decision to get involved in coaching Look where he is Now a shot from Jordan.

"Have the support Jonathan of ownership and management because Bill zito and the management group of the Florida Panthers have been building around guys like you, the core, the nucleus to keep pieces of the Florida Panthers in an effort to win us Stanley Cup. Not just qualify for the playoffs. I mean, legit win the Stanley Cup. So they go out. They bring in vanish a lot, and they bring in close Giroux. I know you add a little bit more French flair, which is always good. But one of those two guys specifically brought to the team. Yeah, a lot. I mean, you know, we were a good team, a really good team before they come in. And I think that just shows a lot. You said about the management and you believe in this is our year, you know, we've got to go all the way and win the Stanley Cup and I think, you know, obviously for us, the core group has been confidence and even if we haven't really done anything, that shows a lot and now it's our time to shine and to do something on the ice with it. They brought us so many tools like you said. I mean, this guy doesn't lose a face off. I feel he's like, unbelievable, great guy. And I feel like Bill has brought us good player, but good people too, and the chemistry in the dressing room is like, unbelievable, what everybody with real close family. And it shows a lot on the ice. And sure, obviously you guided physical and I think, you know, in the playoffs is going to be huge. I mean, there's less penalties. Things that guy that plays really hard and these two guys just going to bring a lot to us. Have you noticed an energy in the building and energy around your team this year that maybe hasn't been there in the past from attention, the fans that are in the building, have you noticed that? Yeah, I mean, Florida is like that. Winning team, I mean, people are going to come and share a son and I think this year atmosphere last year was good too. Obviously with COVID, it was harder, but this year has been the atmosphere is good. I mean, it's a good place to play when you win. I feel in right now, you know, we're winning and a lot of people come to support us. And I think it's in the playoffs. It's going to be sold out and it's going to be fun. Well, you guys are scaring a lot. You're going to scare a lot of teams with the way you play. I would think so do you have on and off night or you are a hockey watcher or do you just kind of check out and go to other things? No, I don't really. I mean, there's a game on obviously a watch, but if it's on TV, I'm not going to be like looking for a game. In Florida there's a lot of options. You can do and go outside and love to go to the beach, obviously..

"Just read today that Brian Elliott is probably going to start for last ten games. There you go. They're going to try and they're going to try and carve back some time for vasilevski. I mean, let's face it. He's the best in the game. But you can wear out the best in the game too. And maybe that month away for Jack Campbell will help him in Toronto. Florida has not overtaxed bobrovsky or mainly because they can't there's really not that much difference. Although burrows, his numbers are actually quite good, but nobody's tired there. Hey, look, if you got a number one horse, you're going to play them a lot. The backside of that is what if he gets tired, and he lets in a squeaky one that is at the wrong time of the year. Let's get over to the west and we'll talk about the LA Dallas Vegas Nashville and the battle for a playoff spot spots that continues there before we do. Quick shout out to our friend Darren mallard, right? In a tough bike accident, late last week, went through a tough scratch, I would say for a few days leading into the weekend through the weekend, but the good news is he's on the mend. It's going to take him a bit of time. Tough western Canadian boys. Will mallard? There you are. You're doing your thing and this pops into your day. And also, I hope you're getting better as quick as you can be. But yeah, he was sour. He had to miss games and you're like, you know, you got to get better first. Because by the way, I don't think Vegas is dead yet. No. I was going to ask, is it so it's not too late for it? There's 7 and three, their last ten. They got patch already back. LA's lost three in a row. They lost three zero three zero lead in Minnesota. And then all of a sudden, they're chasing the game. They can't get it back. They lose that's three in a row for them. I mean, they're not a healthy team. I think they've had an amazing year to be where they are..

We're not going to get into that, but let's see. Safari a frame wants to know from Instagram during the Winter Olympics. How intense is the rivalry in the Ferraro house? Meaning Canada versus the USA. Now you're working Canada, USA, correct? So you won't be I won't be at home for that game. I do know that cami will be cheering for the United States in on the women's side, 100%. Yeah. But really, very thoughtfully yesterday, package arrived at our host from Gordon Miller. And it was team Canada, jerseys for all of us. Oh, wow. With our name and 22 on the back for Beijing 22. At cammy's got one. So kami will be cheering for Canada because she's cheering for Landon. And but most times, she's cheered for the U.S. and the boys are cheering for Canada. Yeah, of course. These could be, I get it. All right. Buffalo. This is from McKay underscore 29 should the recent success for a Payton crabs and Alex tuck silence the critics of the Jack eichel trade to the Vegas golden knights. Well, it's a little early. I mean, there's a first round pick in there too, isn't there? Yeah, and a second. Yeah. Yeah, so I mean, this deal is going to play out over time. I mean, so right now, clearly, buffalo got the better of the deal because Jack eichel's not playing yet. Yeah. When Jack eichel comes to play, you're going to see what you missed because the guy's a star. But if that first round pick becomes a player and the second round pick becomes a player you'd say, well, man, they did pretty well. I think they did pretty well in the deal. I really do. I talk as a terrific player. He's a legit NHL player, you know, mid 6 guy. Peyton crabs is going to be a legit NHL player. It wasn't an easy deal to make. And it was a long road to get there, but the first two pieces sure look good. All right, Twitter, permanent one, two, three. Says I hear the Toronto maple for provide their players with first class food, nutrition training recovery, analytics, family support all of the facilities. Does any of this matter when a player is deciding whether or not to come to the Toronto Maple Leafs? And comparatively speaking, how bad is it elsewhere? It's not bad, really anywhere, isn't it? But does this stuff matter it matters to a degree? Sure it does. It does because a lot of times the value on the contract will be the same wherever you go. Because everybody's using comparables. The teams are the players are. And so you kind of box in what you're going to make. All the other stuff does matter for sure. There used to be just a massive gap between.

"Across as this very serious cerebral guy, which there's a big part of Bill zito's world at a 100% is like that. But you know what was nice in that interview was getting them to chuckle a little bit and show a little bit more of the lighter side of Bill zito because we don't always see it. No, but how about when I asked him about his career in Yale? And he's like, I can't hear you. Sorry. And I'm dumb enough to pick up and keep repeating the question. But just thinking, like, how many people chart a career path? Yeah. And then actually get to the follow it. And get to what his goal was, which was to be a general manager. I also found it really interesting like how sincere his remembrances were of the people in Columbus. The people that helped them there from John Davidson and yarmouk line and his relationship with torts. And then moving on to Florida and talking about how they've integrated hockey and analytics and sunny made to how popular he is and how that has to be the way. That everybody feels you're on the same team. It's not those guys in us guys. And I just, I don't know. I really feel like they've put together this kind of eclectic varied group. Yeah. And certainly that group has accumulated a lot of talent that was after the studs that were already in place. So put your Bill zito GM of the Florida Panthers had on for a moment. Man, you just, you want to add, right? Because you just want to make this team as deep and as good as they possibly can be for the second half. And obviously for march to the Stanley Cup. But is it just as important to want to resist in doing that? Because why rock about here? This group, including Andrew brunette, is doing a fine job right now. Well, I would say I would say they would look to add a defenseman I don't think you would upset too too much if you were able to do that. Here's the thing, how many times does a team get to be in the top 6 or 7 in the league when you go you know what those 6 or 7 probably have the best chance? And they do. You can't always wait for next year. Every once in a while, you got to jump in the water. And you know, if it costs someone tip it, man, they don't want to move on tip it. But if it costs them that or a first rounder and you can get a legit D man,.

"Towards did a lot of things that were towards when he canceled the morning skates. Why do we do that? You know, he was excellent. Towards the arm on JD, where excellent at saying why. You know what? Towards torches in the doghouse right now. He basically told Canadian media to kiss his ass on Thursday on national television. So I don't know. Well, good. You know what? I'm going to ask you this. Is there a more misunderstood guy? We've got to know towards for, I don't know. However long when he came to TSN and then we some people stay in touch and some don't towards his on air character, you know, like the character that he plays. I can't even stop laughing at it. But he's so different, isn't he? He taught me an awful lot about hockey about being a leader about being accountable. He's not perfect. None of us are. But I'll say this, going back to what I was going to say, 'cause it's important. It's important to a lot of the things we do here. One of the things they teach you in law school, this is like the first day. Find the answer. And then when you find it, that the best answer. So I use this as an example. You have a jar of water. Or you gotta cover it. Okay, so the first guy goes and puts saran wrap on it. Okay, you done? Yeah, and the other guy goes, well, we can put three wrap with a rubber band. Okay, that's a good idea. And the guy goes, why don't you just put a screw top lid on him? Well, there you go. Right? So keep working at it. Keep find the best way to do it, right? And JD armo and towards that was how they approach things. Why are we doing this? Let's just not do stuff because that's how everyone does it..

"We're going to try to fix some of them. We'll hold you accountable. Don't worry about them. Just playing. And I think the coach is in a way that they approach the players. Have fun. Hockey should be fun. There's 82 games. I can't tell you how many times I've heard from the staff. Make sure we make it fun. That's pretty significant part of their approach is to make sure the players enjoy. Still holding them accountable. Still work hard. But it's okay to be yourself. It's okay to make mistakes. Just don't keep making the same one over. No, when you first came in, bill not only did you guys well, I guess the first step was you hired quite significantly around you. You mentioned Rick Dudley, but, you know, experienced hockey people to work around you. What was your thought with that? The fill in different roles in different positions and then you went out and got Carter for hagi and players like that. How did how did your vision from Columbus go to that as quickly as it did? Because you didn't have much time. Well, the timing wasn't great, either hiring part of things, initially when I came in, I thought perhaps I'd have some time to evaluate and what have you. And then as people became available that I knew that I had had a relationship with and obviously that trust is helpful, right? A few folks that you knew and that knew me so that I could have the luxury of being able to make mistakes and be surrounded by folks to know me so that we could live through that. Where I was able to make the errors and then it did not have sort of undue consequences that weren't necessary because the people didn't know me. So we put together the staff and then as we got through the draft and then the pros with regard to the free agents, I was really fortunate to get sunny meta to come in and he was a guy who had been in touch with along the way, hey, if this ever happens, do you want to come on board? And he's a brilliant guy in tandem with his intellect and his capabilities as an analytics guy. His personality is perfect. He said, that's right in. And he gets a lot like he sits with Paul Fenton and a Rick Dudley and you think, oh boy. This is and they're like, sun dog, let's go for a beer. Like, all right, friend..

"Local Boston pizza and give them a call as well. You can also order online, have a delivered right to your front door. All right, right. We've seen to have found a trend, at least developing this year when it comes to identifying potential candidates for general manager posts or hockey operations jobs in the NHL. And that trend is the development of a hiring committee, if you will. Or a group of advisers, a team of advisers to either vet the list of candidates, create a list of candidates and certain cases go through the interview process. Vancouver went through it. Montreal to a point went through it. Anaheim is still doing it mirroring there could be progress on that front this week. And the Chicago Blackhawks now the most recent to tell the world that they've got any old chuck who's a good friend of ours? Not sure why he is an in the running for one of those jobs. You know, they're not going to hire a president of hockey operations. Apparently in Chicago, it doesn't make sense to me. So they're just focusing on the position of general manager in Chicago, but they've got Eddie old chuck, Marian hossa and Patrick hart. I don't know why married hosted would want anything to do with any of this. And then you got Jamie faulkner on the business side and daddy works will be heavily involved. And on and on and on, it goes. Is this a new way of looking at things or does it just the end of the day kind of muddy things up a bit? For me, it kind of muddied things up. And the reason I say that is the people that are on the committees don't really have any skin in the game. And you can say that gives them an unbiased view of the candidates. But everybody is going to have their own individual biases anyway. We all do. Whether we realize it or not, we all do. And so to me, the committee is a nice idea to get to maybe narrow down the candidates. Yeah. But to not have president of hockey operations, really strikes me as a little odd. And the reason it does is that that person is the liaison between the business side, the hockey side, the owners. Well, I guess it's what Jim Rutherford is in Vancouver when they hired him. It's what Brendan Shanahan is in Toronto. That position makes a lot of sense to me. Committees impact or input, you're going to take this input if you're the Blackhawks or the docs. And then these guys are going to go on their way. Yeah. So to me, that doesn't really make a lot of sense. I would want whoever is helping make that choice to be involved in the choice and to be involved in the.

"We've got four to Panthers GM Billy zito. He's going to join us coming up shortly on the podcast man. Drake. They're the greatest show on ice right now. I mean after game, if you're a team struggling with generate generating offense and I don't, you know, not every team as a world class talent, the Florida Panthers have, but just watch. You know, just watch a period of how that team attacks. It's wave after wave after wave. Well, and just when you think you've got them figured out, mason marchment throws a 6 pointer up on the board. So while everyone's looking at uberto and barkov and duclair, for plus 6 for you, that's a pretty nice line. No kidding and I you know I'm looking at his contract $800,000 this year. And then he's an unrestricted free agent. So his timing is pretty good. Yeah, you know what though? You know, and you know we get into we'll get into it with Billy zito a little bit, but that's one of the things the Panthers have done really well is they found value contracts and made it work for them. You know, they everybody knew that Carter for Hague was close to being a good player. Well, they got him at a really reasonable price and he's given them two really good years. I do see some people saying, well, yeah, you know, but next year they're going to have to pay these guys. Well, that's fine. So maybe you can't. And they move on to another place, and that's where you're scouting has to be sharp because you got to replace them. Or you've got to draft well. And Matt Florida has got some just some exciting players to watch and man 8 goals on Columbus. It was in the second period in your life real. All right, well, Florida path. Watching mike altieri the longtime media leader of the los angeles kings seeing that he had two holes in one during a gulf round on saturday. That made me really jealous. "We're bringing you a conversation with. Wsf steve newborn conservation photographer. Carleton ward junior and panther biologist. Brian kelly panthers migrate north of the coosawhatchie into central florida. What kind of perils are we seeing that they're facing but it has to explore ways around it doesn't know how to avoid dangers in the beginning of the first obstacle for an individual pather the population as a whole big challenges finding wild spaces. Pray is not necessarily you. It's that habitat connectivity and car deaths or obviously a big issue whether it's a beautiful spread in the national geographic article that has a migration pathways through the florida wildlife corridor and also a lot of panther death sarah on the road especially state road twenty nine by corkscrew swamp so the main issues has been developing wildlife underpasses under roads. Do you think this is a critical. Need 'cause we're only a mile from us twenty seven and you have these huge trucks going by left and right. Certainly the while life under processes have been shown to be effective south of the river and mitigating panther vehicle collisions and other wildlife vehicle collisions so certainly strategically placed wildlife. Underpasses are also going to help maintain the connectivity of habitat nachos for panther but for other animals as well. Yes after he sees research and even my cameras have really documented how these wildlife underpasses work but Wildlife underpass can't work unless you have protected connected habitat on both sides of the road. So i think people can focus on the technical solution of building the underpass but unless the land on each side of that crossing is in permanent conservation status whether that'd be public land or conservation. Easement the state's not going to invest in building a very expensive crossing structure. But we need to be looking at the big connected corridor. The comes down and meets those places right. We're here in fishing creek while management area. It's a narrow ribbon of land here surrounded by ranches on each side the path. We just walk down. There's a barb wire fence with a huge reaction. The other side. How critical are the ranchers in the effort to preserve them and are they fearful of these big predators taking some of their calves. I mean how do we deal with that. It's a legitimate concern. Panthers are known to kill cavs and that can affect people's livelihoods ranches also provide an incredible amount of wildlife habitat and put a lot of effort into managing habitat for wildlife. In addition to cattle. They are essential pieces of the puzzle. In that patchwork of different types of land ownerships land management practices to keep enough land available for wildlife in general and in particular panther. You've worked with ranchers all your life. You come from families ranchers ago way back. How many generations has your family dinner..
