Six constitutional amendments are on Florida's 2020 ballot

"Rhetoric from President Trump calling the elections integrity into question, claiming, for instance, that mail in voting is not secure, raises fears about a contested election. But an attorney who represented George W. Bush in the legal battle over Florida's president to recount in 2000 does not foresee problems. This will not be repeated 2000 and second. I don't anticipate any serious problems this year in Florida. And probably in any states. Barry Richard says Florida has made several changes no more hanging chads for one designed to reduce the risk of election disasters. Six proposed amendments to the state Constitution include one that would open Florida's primaries, Amendment three would create a single primary for all candidates of all parties. The top two finishers in that would go on to the general election. Supporters say it would force candidates to appeal to a wider audience. Those include a South Florida businessman Mike Fernandez. Who has put more than a million dollars into the campaign to get Amendment three passed Amendment Four on this year's ballot would require proposed amendments in future years to pass twice in two different elections to become part of the state constitution. But Kate McFall of the Humane Society of the United States who helped get an amendment passed in 2018, that band Greyhound racing in the state. Says it already takes 60% of voters to approve amendments. And that's challenge enough. If amendment forward pass. A lot of folks and and survivors of the Arkansas shooting and and advocates there around that, and then by done control and so I I think it was interesting that he was able to kind of you know squeak out and even pollock who was endorsed by you know the the Sheriff There Sheriff Union it was interesting kind of three headed situation going on there but it'll be it'll be really interesting to see how that all plays out of how those offices kind of work in conjunction with each other for it you have. But I think the one thing that you can definitely say is that after yes or after Tuesday I should say. Broward is going to be a place where. It seems as though it's going to be a place where criminal justice reform and a lot of these hot hot button hot stove issues that we've been grappling with as a nation for the last three or four months they're going to be centered. Beasley instead of just being. I guess like dealt with in more of an appeasing kind of way or just dealt with like in a public relations kind of way really does seem like. I, don't know maybe I'm over celebrating this, but it seems like a like like a bright spot as far as that goes. No. I. Think you're spot on there and I I think that that's definitely something I had a lot of.

"That they can look to that, and maybe we'll see how things go of years from now. You talk about the the similarity of the last name I. Think I'm sure that that had a lot to play with it and We've talked before about the kind of inroads that that rundle has just as an institution here in the state but it's not the first time and I'm GonNa put you a little bit on the spot here as we transition to. Talking about a bunch of like really great young black handed to who did a great job in Broward County was a banner election primary for them a lot of them that when they're primary probably GONNA end up winning their positions but in Miami Dade before we talk about that, is there a problem for black candidates running for countywide seats in Miami because it seems like I mean you can kind of blame it on the last name Olympics a little bit, but it seems like. They. Just never are able to get the the the wider appeal in this county and I don't like the implications at that carries with it. I? Don't think anybody would but I'm curious what your thoughts are. Sure Yeah I mean. while. There's a lot of layers to that I mean. That's just in about ninety seconds just. Back all of this systemic you know across national racism that is institutional system should year yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. To put him. There's a lot to unpack there No I I think that that's definitely interesting. The Miami Herald absence we just really serious looking at the sort of challenges of upward mobility for the Black Unity I'm here here in in Miami Dade County and and I think that you know a big part of it is you know you talk about the names I mean, there are some some names In the black community that had been able to find find success and even you know throughout across families I mean Hardiman family is one that comes to mind. North routine, ill or you know his tragic? Downfall You know awhile ago more than a decade ago Excessive rose two pretty prominent spot in the county by you know I think that there's still..

"Right allegedly supposedly, it's You Know Commissioner Bobo is very staunchly conservative Michener Danielle Looking kabas obviously Very Progressive Democrat so You know I think I think those polls are going to be a kind of Catholic, MT each other and. It's GonNa be interesting to see how both candidates reach out to those independent voters, moderate voters or there's voters who just might not have really just faded in the process or the August election. You know now they've got a maybe almost interest and say, Hey, it wasn't decided then it's not over We you know we still need folks that head out there and this decision is still in your hands come November third. Yeah, it's. It's been a pretty apart from the standard fare of attack ads here, and they're getting tossed back and forth. It feels like it's been a pretty straightforward race without a lot of scandals. Now, I draw that say that to draw the distinction between the great, the great reporting that members of your team did on the state's attorney's office race, which was only tertiary Lee involved with with the race itself it was more about the incumbent Katherine Fernandez. Rundle. She wound up winning as we had mentioned on the show before she wound up winning by a pretty wide margin against challenger Meld, the Pearson who had has been on the show before and it was kind of a very demoralizing result. Especially when you consider your colleague Danny, Rivera had covered this sort of pay to play scandal at Rundle's office and we haven't really talked about that here on the. Show, can you I know you you know Danny and you're along side the reporting and stuff like that, and you did it's your outlet. Can you walk us through a little bit of that that reporting and how that story came about and you know I'm wondering if you're surprised that the that the result was so lopsided still in her favor in spite of in spite of that that scandal. Sure. Yeah and I I, I could talk about her to that. Yes. I mean with with occasional Danny's story even working on that even prior to my joining. It's been about a year that he has been following the tip about this Denise, Moon Memorial Fund that basically opera you know for certain cases In order to kind of secure jail or in order to finalize deal with prosecutor's Office folks would would make a contribution to this to the spun and the fun would help support all kinds of non-profits and programs around South Florida and it was done in conjunction with the Miami Foundation and It's not very widely known about or and and people don't really look into that often and You know prior to Danny Story I think a lot of folks just didn't really know the INS and outs of bitter even though that this. And a lot of prosecutors and I and I think it's. The kind of looked at it and said, oh no, that's just a part of how it works and nobody really questioned it much, and so you know he had been worked on that for a while and the state attorney's office said Hey you know like even the we're involved in this you know the Miami Foundation handles things and we are kind of sack advisory role and and so forth and they they kinda played down the idea of being sort. Of as you as you alluded to sort of play operation but even in the follow up reporting from that, you know Danny Talk to a former prosecutor and she said, yeah wasn't talked about much and it wasn't something that was made clear to new staffers. It was Kinda just something that You know it was mentioned in a sort of passing reference moved on from. Would you? You would think that if it was if it was an institutionalized above board? Standard practice it would be codified somewhere. You would think that it was a thing that's like, okay..

"Into November do you see with all these new logistical concerns? Have you heard with your ear to the ground and he kind of problems like that are things that might rear up or you know I had asked a guest earlier this week what they thought would be the sort of like the hanging Chad moment of this Kobe election and I wanted to get your thoughts on that if you if you from your perch there at the Buehler. And if you're hearing stuff like that. Yeah Yeah. So we we definitely saw the incident situation at the the library I think in coral gables it was and You know we saw a couple of things on on election day. There were issues where certain polling places that run out of balance or you know people in reached out and said Oh you know folks were being turned away pushed away by really aggressive campaign workers and things like that. I mean, those sorts of things are have been common and at a part of south. Florida elections for awhile ago as you mentioned. Covered a lot of stuff when I was at the Herald to and and you know we'd always go sorta reports that he will be like Oh, there's a shouting match or things got crazy at this particular place no that's that's certainly something that we're keeping an eye on because you know when you think about how people are voting and the apprehension they. Might have about growing. So face in person with Kobe general. Now you know a lot more folks are apprehensive about sitting there vote balanced mail. So they might want to take advantage of early voting opportunity to drop it off at their early voting locations. So if if there's a person out there, there are groups of people who are being aggressors just for that. Person to walk from their car literally to withdraw then you know W, we're going to be keeping an eye on. I WANNA, get you to weigh in on a couple of the results starting with the Miami Dade County Mayor, obviously Daniela Living Kavas. We mentioned on the show she's going head to a runoff with Steve. Bova, who who another fellow city, a county commissioner vers, what can we expect from that race in between now and November now that the field has kind of been cleared of a lot of the other. Candidates. Yeah so I mean I think we've seen this a lot in You know reporting that some folks on our team have done but you know simply like the Miami Herald with Kingston and others who been following that race closely It's probably GONNA get a little nasty and it's drawing a lot of comparisons to to the the twenty sixteen presidential campaign. Even between you know current president trump and and the Democratic nominee senator Hilary Clinton where. She. Even though the Miami Dade County Mayor's race in name is a nonpartisan race..

"Affairs, director of the Florida news network, executive producer, Michael Yaffe? Michael is always a pleasure to be with you. And we are proud as punch today that we're going to have author historian south Florida resident Brad Meltzer back. Well, let's talk about his brand new book the first conspiracy. The secret plot to kill George Washington who could possibly want to kill George Washington right now. I mean, gee whiz. Well, guess what? There were a lot of them out there, and it was a big watt. And we don't want to give too much away. Right now. But we're gonna let Brad teddy about this. He's made this thing into a whole book along with Josh. And it really is Michael has said it to me, it is a page Turner. Yeah. I've been looking forward to this interview for weeks now because I enjoyed the book so much, and it is factual Brad is known for twenty years for his thrillers that had threads of historical truth in them. But this one is based on the truth. There's there's no shouli Shelley and flimflam in this one. The way it's written kind of like a thriller where you just keep wanting to read. Well, he's yes, he's translated. He's managed to transmit your translate his ability to to hold your interest and make it thrilling into real living history. And that is that is a gift brand is ad, but conspiracies in Americans we love them for many many years. Just a couple of quick examples here for you and made you may have one too. I go back to president Zachary Taylor are twelve president living in Louisiana at the time. Successful. General very independent minded thought. He was going to be maybe like John Adams John Quincy Adams. But the southerners, and this is a time when north and south are beginning to be feeling the slave issue in the north doesn't trust the south in the south is refrains are going to do and they think with Zachary Taylor, the southerner in the White House that everything's going to be safe. They're fine. Another friend of he's a slave owner. Yeah. Well, it turns out he doesn't back them on these things and on the fourth of July in eighteen hundred and fifty he attends the cornerstone laying of the Washington Monument, and it's a hot day in Washington almost like a Florida summer day and after the dedication ceremony. He drinks a lot of very cold milk and eath raw vegetables, and strawberries, and guess what a few days later. He's dead. Unbelievable. Well, the verdict was he died of gastroenteritis from eating these bad vegetables and bringing the cold Milbrett heat. And but the conspiracy grew for years that southerners had him killed really wasn't coming down on their side. Poisoned him. Amazing. I not heard about this one. This built ready. This is better. This went on for one hundred and twenty years. Yeah. We get into the middle nineteen seventies. Where the family actually allows the body of Zachary Taylor to be exhumed. Modern medicine is going to open up. Yeah. Remains and settle this argument. Whether the southerners poisoned him because of his stance on slavery like they charging one hundred and twenty years, and guess what they found. It was what they were. Generally said does he died of gastroenteritis? Wow. So so much for that conspiracy. We put almost like conspiracies like that are part of conspiracy theories are just a part of American history. It took one hundred and twenty years to put that one to bed. You know, we still have a lot of floating around about ABRAHAM LINCOLN. They will never be proved one another enforcers JFK Kennedy. Yes. And on it goes. But I thought I would share the Zachary Taylor one isn't generally well-known unless you happen to be around in the mid seventies. When they actually it's fascinating things. But Brad Meltzer has boy spent a long time here studying this conspiracy to kill George Washington. And it's a marvelous book, and he's going to kind of teasing us with it. So we'll invite you to stay put I'm Regan Smith. Michael Yaffe Brad Meltzer. And the Florida roundtable, we'll continue in a moment. Now, you can fly anywhere in the. The world.

"The Florida news network, and I'm executive producer, Michael Yaffe, Michael the pleasure to be with you again this week a little bit later on the our our special guest the gentleman from Tallahassee Erik Eggers. He is the author of a brand new book from Regna republishing entitled fraud how the left plans to steal the next election. Wow. You don't have to you don't have to get into. You. Don't have to go much past the title page figure out where that bookstore. Exactly, right, obviously, he has a strong point of view certainly does. But we're going to ask him some questions about that and focus on some of the problems that we have here in Florida and also some of the high points, everything is not bad in Florida. Now, basically this last time around we came down to just a couple of counties couple of the same counties that we had problems with eighteen and coincidence. The big question Markle, if you're driving south on ninety five through Palm Beach or Broward County watch out for the big question. Mark hanging over the area there. Elections are concerned. But voter suppression, Michael you mentioned this. A word that maybe some folks aren't too familiar with but charged that is certainly out there in a big way, these days seems like it's out there in bigger ways than it used to be when you look at the Georgia governor election, especially you have Stacey Abrams who is basically saying that her loss was legitimate. The current governor elect really isn't the legitimate winner because of quote, unquote, voter suppression. And they've been saying in Florida as well. I don't understand. Voter suppression. Of course, I have a problem with a lot of this business. I go back to Richard Daley, Chicago when he used to save booed off. So that definitely gave you a strong point of view on this it does and to me where some of our voting rules have gone is legalizing mayor Daley's philosophy of early and leave the vote off and on off of that that part of it. But. It used to be considered. It was a privilege to cast your ballot. And if the election was on a Tuesday, they're open for twelve hours. If you're in line when the polls close, you they have to let you vote and somehow or other in that twelve hours, you found a few minutes to get to your polling place and make it happen because you wanted to participate in our democracy. And now it's just like all just about any day. You want? Oh, I know. Yeah. They have early voting. They have absentee voting than they have election day voting where it's all day and still they claim voter suppression. We have record turnouts in both states, four two and Georgia, and they're still saying, well, some votes were suppressed one of the things he did in Louisiana longtime ago to help avoid this business while it's hard to vote on Tuesday people work out. I don't know how many people that work in the hospital, nurses. I guess sometimes do the twelve hour thing Louisiana moved all their state and local elections two Saturdays. And it's all a lot of problems Australia does that the country. Actually, they vote on the weekends. I think Saturday and Sunday. So I mean, there are ways around it. And I just question. The necessity of. I'm not saying this all wrong. We've done it. And but it opens the door to all kinds of additional fraud more so than we had over the years. Well, I mean, the Florida election this year really kind of proved that because that's where a lot of the issues came from it came from the early votes the absentee votes, and they weren't counting them, right? They weren't submitting them. Right. And it probably wouldn't happen as much if it was just the one day voting like you said and thank goodness we've done away with the punch cards. That is one good thing that came out of problem. No, no, hanging chads, no bomb. No butterfly ballots. This time filling in the bubbles pretty easy. If you can't figure out how to do that. And there are people who do manage to screw it up. That's a story for another show. We will have to take a little bit of a pause along our network line. Here will remind you that this is the Florida roundtable the service of Florida's talk and let her networks, I'm Reagan's Smith's. I'm Michael Yaffe, you'll be joined by author Erik Eggers.
