"Former Major League Baseball player Jeremy giambi dies, suicide, probably accidental, they're not saying, I don't think they said, but he was a big partier. His brother Jason giambi, who was a Yankee for us and did well for us for a number of years, was he Yankee. And he was famous for party, and I'll tell you how I knew not only Jason, but his brother as well were parties. Me and Joey were out one night at scores, the famous strip club in Manhattan. This is, I think the I think it was 2000 on the Yankees were against the Tampa. I'm gonna get this wrong. They were playing them on the model. It's Florida Marlins in the World Series. And we need a Jason John me to play. It was one of the last years of his career, maybe no, he was traded. One of the last years he started to break down legs were going, things were happening. Big guy, steroid user, the whole thing. And wasn't in a starting lineup, which was terrifying because he had a big bat. We needed his bat. Didn't want to lose this series, which we went on to lose. And he didn't play this one game. And we need him to pinch hit. It was a perfect time to pin chip with men on base and he didn't go out there. And the other thing that ties us with the brother who died, he's part of the most probably the most famous play defensive player in Yankee history where I forget who bad at hit a ball in the gap during the playoffs, Yankees against Oakland and I'm going to say Paul O'Neill was in right field. He gets the ball off the wall, throws a bomb, a bullet down the first base line, the first face, and fakes that he's catching it. Derek Jeter was not supposed to be anywhere near the first baseline since he's a shortstop. Gita runs to the first baseline, many of you sports fans know the play. Catches the ball in a hop. Takes his right hand and underhanded backwood to the catcher Jorge Posada as Jeremy giambi is close to stepping on home plate, persona backhands and happens to hit the back calf of giambi's leg before his toe touches home plate. Yankees keep the one nothing lead, go on to win the series. The most famous defensive play in Yankee history, I think, in my opinion. And Jeremy zombie unfortunately was the guy checked out.

"What was that like me. Like you know what i mean to face your uncle in a real game in the major leagues that had to be spirit. Yeah it was. Special man my granddad. That's all he wanted a whole life. You know i've been. I've been getting beat up. I dock my whole life. Came got punished. Bad as a kid and You know when. I finally had that uniform on with the padres and and i see my uncle standing out there getting ready to piss to me. It made my granddad day. You know it was the best feeling he ever had You know as a family. We talked about it for a long time. And when i got that hit on and you know i was just like amazed like all the work that i have put in when i was in when i was little and i couldn't hit him. You know. I finally got to the point where i can hit him in Spring training i to pick an beat at out so i hate to say that. Don't count z. Yeah he says. The dow struck you out what accounted show. The other thing too. The little league world series ended not too long ago and you played in that. I mean you've been in some major things in your life. Obviously you want a world series with the florida marlins in one thousand nine hundred seven but what was that like did you. Did you know you had what it took to get to the made to the major leagues. Or when you were planning that you would just plan your kid having fun. What won't take us back to the little league world series. I was a fan. I was a fan of baseball in. The big red machine was out of tampa at low fat field. Yeah and so. You know Somebody had brought it up to the other day about our little league teams bike from nineteen seventy two and seventy four and all those and then and then all those errors we had and they said you know if if people really had took the time out to dig deep until you're you're you're a little league program they will see that there's not been a program ever to ever been match this program because we used to go to the world series year after year and it was nothing to us if we lost the game it was like we did on each other as players and it was like we ain't supposed to lose and we're not even post to win by a little bit iran. We're supposed to win by a lot of runs so our expectations was high at a young age. So it carried over as i got older but but most of the older players and The older parents and people would tell me what i was going to be before i even knew it. Wow they saw it at that time. That's amazing gary last thing you said your your coaching travel teams. Do you teach them more of an old school of pros side of batty. Greg question year launch angles. And all that stuff. You see now strike outs..

"And flipped the scrip fast. Go back to the that. Good scorcher team. I don't know how you do that with the drop of a hat next day. Day game a after you just got taking two of three at home against the baltimore orioles. Taiwan's just got a pitch very well. Bought a old cliche goes it starts with the the guy in the mount starts with the starting pitcher because guess what this start that gives them some breathing room to tha but if tyron again can't get through the fifth inning which he has been unable to do as less to starts out how the how the heck are they're going to get five innings out of this bullpen. This team they four wins in a row this team. I'm talking about the baltimore the baltimore. I'm talking about the toronto blue jays. They're scary team right now. I've said they were scared since spring training but right now this this team scares the shit out of me Looking at this more. They're scaring me even more because they have some They got a chip on their shoulder. A little bit of revenge from the the last series against the yankees yankees just got their ass kicked by the blue jays. Basically taking a two or three. They're in a vulnerable position. This is a young team hungry team at at new york in the bronx that want to make a mark these types of kids that wanna that want to embarrass you when possible so not feeling good about that. I'm not feeling good about that. There's a lot of a lot of a motivation for them. They're playing well. They see the yankees in their sights. What are we up. Four games four and a half on on toronto a half hour and a half with four to play like that that they have another series for to play in this series. That's that's a. That's a very clean thing to do when you're when you're when you're looking at the blue jays for some Bolton board material. Yeah all right little little half episode on memorial day as labor day weekend labor day. Monday you guys are enjoying the holiday and the weekend and scott nice so there's a busy week for the yankees just like you said the four games but also we have the jeeter hall of fame speech coming up this week so you and i are going to do an episode after we hear that and react. I i am. I kind of have high expectations for it full. Well knowing i'm going to be let down because eaters. Just going to be very jittery. I think in. I don't think we're gonna get it. He's opened up more. He's definitely opened up more and started talking about certain things. So maybe this is know. I think he started doing that with the player's tribune. When when that whole thing started that was what the year after he retired. And then you know he's gotten he has kids now so there's a lot more of emotions that are like swirling in this man's brain. We'll see how the composure has changed. And how he can do it because this is gonna hit. The nostalgia button really hard for everybody. There's going to be a lot of people there watching him. You know supporting him and He's not going to be able to do this by just like staring out at a screen. There's been a whole bunch of things right. The the voicemails. What he's going to do. I think is go back to the stories and then turn it on people. And that's how he gets through those moments rather than like all being him he'll turn and he'll he'll talk about the impact and he'll talk about the things that certain people did for him and then turned it into like a little bit of story joke. And then he'll deflect in that way he's gonna he's gonna hill definitely have some self deprecating In in the speech over under time on the speech he put. What's an average speech. I don't know what an average i don't know what was griffin minutes. I'd say five minutes. I'd say over the five minutes. I take over five minutes. If if if i were to guess it would be around ten but i don't even know if i'm closing long. I think that might be long. I feel like i long career long career. There's a lot of people can say nice things about him. He's got a lot of people have thanked. There's a lot of things that went on the kid from kalamazoo all the way through all this championships with the yankees. And now he's started a whole other baseball life with with the marlins like he's got a lot how much if any of the speech will have the marlins in it. I think if anything it will it will tie help tie it to just how baseball is continuing and how he learned everything from the organization and is applying that. I don't even think i'll say the name. I don't think. I don't think he'll say that. Name florida marlins new organization or no. I think he'll just say influence how. I have continued my baseball career. Or something. like that. like he'll just allude to it but not say it. Does he mention. He'll go back into the yankee ways like in immediately he obviously will think george steinbrenner. Joe torry probably joe girardi as well since he did win. Stick michael i bet. Stick michael shout here. Does buck showalter get a a mention now. I mentioned obviously his teammates. Kasahda pettitte mariano. Those are the core for bernie hopefully gets a gets a mention bernie's part of the core. Yes she's part of the queen's not the core four that was a marketing thing that that was a very very williams. Yeah why am. I buy completely missing. This guy's name steiner sports. That was that was a steiner sports thing who who who mark them the core for the core five. I don't care what anybody says. Does a rod get a mention. No very strategically not. So because it's like obviously you the glory days without a-rod and then the one i think he's gonna talk a lot about his parents. I think he's gonna talk a lot about apparently he may he may bring it back to the two thousand and one world series and in that moment like just because i getting drafted and stuff actually. If you guys didn't listen. I did a history episode on how jeeter fell to the yankees at number five not really following but like he felt number six because it was called the jeeter five so i believe five players were taken ahead of derek jeter and just like how that draft process went to go. Check that out. We should probably re release some of the jeeter any. Yeah the jeter jeeter centrica histories. We'll re post the jeeter one on wednesday morning the day of the speech. That was the only jeeter centric one. I think that i did. But yeah i mean he'll he'll definitely thank all of those people. I don't think it gets mentioned either. But it's interesting that does he. He'll i think he'll. He'll talk about his five championships. Maybe in general does he like talk about specifics. From those teams or anything. I'm not sure. I think the championships one or an opportunity to talk about the his teammates. And all those things coming up. But i also think the postseason and the moment and that's where i think potentially there will be some discussion..

"You think all right. Now you're just gonna chill absolutely not. He starts auto nation which is at this point. It's the largest seller of used cars in america so he went from waste management to blockbuster two cars and then throughout this whole period. He's also doing the same with resort. So have you ever heard of extended stay america. I believe now it's owned by mary. You ever heard of extended save america. So basically they've got. They've got something like five six seven hundred Motels that are nice enough. You could stay for like a handful or like a month or two four weeks. At a time. He started that you also started a bunch of different clubs and then in the nineties eventually buys the miami dolphins. I think he bought another florida. What's the florida football team we. So that's the dolphins the florida marlins also the baseball team. The marlins pretty amazing and so. I was amazed at this guy and the reason i was amazed at him as he had an incredibly positive attitude when he was doing this whole thing. And so here's a few things. Here's a few quotes from his biography. That he talked about were his philosophy. The first we made small acquisitions in different states around the united states it was just easier faster and cheaper to go in and buy a guy who has already established a market even if it was very small then i'd hire a bunch of sales to go out and do the internal growth. The plan was always have internal growth. But in order to get internal growth growing quickly sometimes eager to go out and just by By a guy who had three or four trucks and say okay. Let's do this on her own. And that's what he did over and over and over and over again and he did it an all those businesses except blockbuster but even then he did it with block was because he started the brand but and they grew on their own but eventually they started buying like loads of different mom. Top mom and pop movie stars and this whole strategy. There's another guy who did this. His name is bradley. Jacobs tease is worth like or ten billion dollars. He did this over and over and over again. And i think that there's still a ton of room to do. So what. What other issues could you do this. Then i've been thinking about this a lot. And i'm not entirely educated on the topic but i think i think you could do it for all types of moving businesses 'cause moving businesses. There's not actually one leader that you trust. Who's like the best right. It's a lot of mom and pop stores well other industries. Could you do this like consolidation. Stuff in i mean these roll ups happen kind of in every industry. I feel like people have done it with dentists house right now. Dentists is like the hottest thing going. there's also like pet vet's veterinary hospitals or veterinary clinics..

"Run club and how many home runs they had through various ages the rage twenty-three the average five hundred home run club. Member had seventy seven home runs. Miguel cabrera had one hundred and four and in fact he was above that average Every season until age thirty five which was in twenty eighteen which was really the first year. He missed a lot of time and from that point on he did like you said sort of fell off of the pace so it is kind of amazing to me that a guy can start career as really precocious Producing beyond his age hitter Like cabrera who made his debut at age twenty. Remember him on the two thousand three florida. Marlins team that won the world series and can be above the break even the average pace for the five hundred home run club every year until age thirty five and then still just sort of have to scrap claude to be able to get over that. Finish line a few years later. I think that that really is a testament to how difficult it is to do that. And how you have to be good early in your career you gotta be good in the middle of your career and you really got to be good at the end of your career Just to just to do that. And i think we talked about that. Consistency factor when. We're talking about hank aaron's passing about how he sort of snuck up on people with how many home runs that he had and the fact that he he all of a sudden was in a position to really make a charge of babe ruth record because he just went out and hit forty home runs. Thirty five to forty home runs practically every year for like two straight decades and then all of a sudden those those pile-up so it really is about the long game it's not about. It's sort of the tortoise. Not the hair you have to go out there and and just consistently pile up these these good homerun seasons But i also just think cabrera is fascinating overall because of the ark of his career. Where like i said. I mean he was in right field during the bartman game in wrigley field On that marlins team and he has been around baseball to see the changes. That have happened to it. I think you could say the same thing about the arc of alba. Pools is career. We talked about him when he Moved from the angels to the dodgers earlier in the year Also but like those two guys especially as right handed power hitters. They have seen the the whole arc of baseball history kind of play out in modern baseball history..

"I am happy that in the market for grills, someone go check out the fine people apps. There you go, Danny. All right, gentlemen, let's start with some sports before we get to the fund lighter stuff. Astros Carlos Correa, Jose Altuve add their names to the list of players planning on skipping the All Star game for non injury related reasons, Captain. You think there's going to be a trend? Um, sir, We just talked about this 24 hours ago. We did, and I did, And I said to you, I don't think baseball will be as big a trend like it is in basketball, all right. First of all. Baseball like for pictures, they get so many days off, they get what 33 starts. I mean, they're going to be guys that have injuries. They're legit. But I just think the all Star experience for a lot of guys and most contracts have a bonus built into it. Guys are not going to bypass it. We just have examples of three For this All Star game. At some point, the money doesn't matter, And the rest does Like you and I would be excited to play. But clearly there are some players in this generation to Graham won the two that Danny just mentioned opting out like it's the NFL Pro Bowl. And you know what it might say in their contract that they get that money just for being named an all star, right? It doesn't mean they have to play in the game. It might mean David Caplan. You get an extra $150,000 if you're major League baseball star. Well, these guys are all stars. They still can get that check. Valid point vow. I just don't think it will get to the level of the Pro Bowl. The Provost joke, Okay, the gap next week. Will be more dropping out of death will ask the question again. Do you think this will be a trend? I'll be dead guys out. We'll see. We'll see. Uh, Danny. All right, gentlemen, moving on. Fans have been banned from the Tokyo Olympics as Japan declares a state of emergency. So they see a delta variant coming, apparently correct. And they also only like I saw this on World news tonight last night with David Muir because my wife is in love with him. Are you were in the room this time every night. Now it's become a thing where I have to watch it. But we're called the United States is like 48%. Oh, God, the United State. I was in the bathroom downstairs once he was a guest on windy City live and I stood next to him at a urinal. I should have at that point said, Get your head in that toilet. Um, like the United States is at 48% vaccinated. I believe Japan's just like in the 20 percentile of of a vaccinated population. The Arabs Hard time with the rollout of the vaccine. Wow, Man Olympics with no fans, and that's never happened before, So we're not just delay it. Did that last. They said, No. They'll lose $14 billion in TV rights for with a B 14 billion in TV rights, but think about how much money they spent to build these arenas. For the fans to see the events and now that's going for nothing. That's that's really a shame, awful, but this is where we are, man. I mean, you have people from all over the world coming there. You don't know what they have, and they don't want to make others sick. And so here we are. So, But Danny's right saved. For instance, the Olympics were here, You know they would build extra stadiums, extra seating all that and then no one sit. There's no butts and seats. That sucks awful. Very, very sad. And, you know, I always thought of their technological advances in the world which have impacted our lives over decades that they would be right on point. With the rollout of the vaccine, and it hasn't gone that way. Yeah. Gentlemen, Trevor Bowers. Administrative leave has been extended seven days by Major League Baseball amid the investigation. So let's hear from David Samson, right. David Sampson of former executive with the Florida Marlins has his own show. Nothing personally has a podcast. He was on the Dan Libertad show as well, which, to God's talking about this? Listen to what David Sampson had to say, regarding Trevor Bauer as his perspective as the next executive, and let's talk about it quickly. I do want to give this claim, er, this is obviously a serious topic. And there's some mature content. So if you have young ones, give him some earmuffs. Here. Trevor Bauer Meet someone online on Instagram hazard drive to him. They have a conversation where he she says. I want hard sex, he says. Great. I'm in, but then their definition of what that is changed. And Trevor Bauer was hitting her made her unconscious, penetrated her while unconscious, all the things that are rape and assault. And then his defenses. It was consensual. And here's the text message that says, Hey, I like it that way. How many times do we have to tell men when someone cannot acquiesce and say, Let I want to be assaulted? Doesn't work that way. It does not work that way. And now if the district attorney gets involved, which it's not yet, But if they do, Trevor Bauer gets suspended right then and there. If Trevor Bauer gets charged, he will be suspended right then and there even if he's not charged. MLB is investigating right now. And they are going to suspend him. It's just a matter of when. Not if. Okay, well, you heard with, Sampson said there, Kevin, and it's it's layered, but we'll try to keep it short. Here and again. This is as Miller mentioned very delicate conversation regarding Trevor Bar and we know more. Uh, as as Gentleman just gave us the information on the latest on him, but When you're talking about rough sex, right?.

"Happens. Crazy here in Cincinnati. But now the Reds one out away from winning it, Vote swings. It's a high drive, great field and deep and this game is going to be tied way out of here. For Steven Vogt. It's 11 to 11. His first Giants home run is a memorable one. He just crank the first pitch from Iglesias and hit a 10 rows deep into the bleachers, 11 to 11 in the ninth inning. Amazing. I guess I hadn't remember that was his first home run as a giant pretty memorable home, run Anything specific? You remember about that night that game Not just that. It was his first game as a San Francisco giant. He grew up a Giants fan. All he wanted to do was play for this team, and he showed up at spring training that year Copes. He was not healthy. He's coming off a season when he had shoulder surgery. He wasn't even sure if his major league career was going to be able to continue. He had to go down Triple A improve himself proved too far hot and the Giants that he was ready to come up to the major league level and contribute. And so it just meant so much to him to be in the dugout that night. I remember talking to him before the game about the emotions he felt. Wearing a Giants uniform, You know, he admired the organization across the bay in Oakland, where he became a fan favorite and so to see him deliver in that moment, uh, first off, there are very few human beings who are as nice in his genuine as Stephen Vogt. And then there were very few major league baseball players who can even come in the same class as him when it comes to human beings and people and so to see him come through In that moment, That's that's a game. I'll never forget on the speed. Honestly, it's a game that he delivered and after the game, he was very emotional in the clubhouse. And for good reason. I mean, he's someone who, after a big loss or after a tough loss, he always said, Hey, writers come to my locker. I'll talk to you about it. If you need quotes. If you need anything, I'll break down the game. I'll stand up for my teammates and to see him do it. After a win like that, where he was the hero. It was really cool. Wow. Well said pretty cool man, and I want to say that series actually ended up being sort of funky was that Is that a Pablo Sandoval? I didn't eat. I want to say he hit a hit a home run through a shutout inning or something like that. He was at the first giant to do that all the base to that was it. It was like the first guy to do it since, like the Christy Mack Chrissy map. Hey, Ben Matthews himself. It was. It was Christy Mathewson home run stolen base and threw a scoreless inning in the same game. Unbelievable stuff, too. And I think Chase d'Arnaud also pitched. That's your It's a great call by you. Chase d'Arnaud dude, the The Matt Duffy family friend he had been. You've been kind of backed up his mentor when they were like teenagers use a little bit older than than the just man. Hey, one more. I want to throw at you just because I think come from behind games at Oracle Park. This is one that always stands out to me. I don't know why it's not like it was a late ballgame, You know, ninth inning, where they had to rally and Come back. I'm going to take you to April 30th Dude 2000 and four What do you remember about a Brian Dalam or Oh, man, Brian Dalam or very little, But I do know that he had one big moment of Giants uniform. Well, Brian Gallimore, at one point had won the Cactus League that entitle him like 5, 20 or something and didn't make the team out of camp like a 29 or 30 year old. The next year, he comes back 2000 and four He's in the minors. The Giants are playing this game against the Florida Marlins at home. I want to say it was a Friday night, maybe a Saturday night in San Francisco. Barry Bonds is in the lineup. Your Victoria, always in the lineup. Kevin Correa, the starting pitcher. Your San Francisco Giants bonds through a bases loaded walk in this game, By the way, our guy Jose Cruz played our guy. Excuse me. This was Davey crews are guys. Scott Air Felix Rodriguez M V P. Vote getter pitched in this ballgame as well. Michael Tucker had a pinch hit. Former Giants bullpen coach Matt Herges made appearance in this game. But the point of this is the Marlins Go forward on the top of the first. Alright then the bottom of the first chance. Put up two runs, okay? They come right back out. They score five more off of Kevin Korea in the second inning. So now you're talking 92. Giants come up bottom of the second. Bonds hits a double. They start rallying a little bit. But then here comes Brian Dalam, or his first big league hit. Off of Dontrelle Willis. And here's what happened. Well, it's to the plate swing.

So they bought a piece of business. They got the rights to the Florida Mark, Florida Marlins at the time, and they were playing at Sun Life Stadium and and I decided to stay because you know, at that point, I didn't think it makes sense. You know, personal I have my child's more French speaking and I was the only friend speaking executive left on. "This I'd just impacted the game of baseball because blood gets traded to the Phillies. He refused. He refused to report to the Phillies. See while ends up taking baseball. The court over the reserve clause that binds a player perpetually to one team. Flood lost that case, but it would eventually lead it to the end of the reserve clause in baseball and open the doors for free agency. So I mean that that trade alter the course of baseball history so that the Kurt Flood traded to the Phillies at Number three number two Wayne Gretzky to the King's I mean, we're talking about the greatest of all time after almost 10 years and adamant in at the age of 27 years old He gets traded from the Oilers, who had just won their fourth Stanley Cup with Gretzky. They trade him because the owner needed cash for struggling other businesses. On day one, the trading Gretzky the king 15 million US 15 million again. You think about that the time it was 1988 so at the time, I mean, $15 million. That's still a lot of money today. But even back then 1988 $15 million A couple players three first round draft picks, and then you know, we know a Gretzky did Eight seasons in L. A. He scored 246 gold 672 assists. The guy in his first season there won the heart trophy. Built that fan base up in Los Angeles. And not only did he build the L, a fan base up, but it gave a boost to the United States hockey seen him arriving from Canada so and again the Kings, who haven't done very much in terms of anything in the postseason. Your last play of victory had come in 1982 Gretzky comes. They reached the playoffs each of his first five seasons. They go the Stanley Cup in 93. They lose to the Canadians, but he does get them. They're so Wayne Gretzky at the age of 27 after just winning his fourth Stanley Cup gets traded. From the Oilers to the king that finally I told you is going to go local with one baseball at to go. My favorite team, the New York Mets. They get Mike Piazza from the Florida Marlins. I'd start following the Mets and that's your number. What is P Yachts of? Yes, Mark. Oh, my God, I'm going. Miami Marlins: Derek Jeter, Kim Ng make baseball history
"I want to start with What I mentioned in the update, and that is the hiring of Qiming as the new GM off the Miami Marlins. And just off the top before we get to the historical nature of this and what it means for North American professional sports, moving forward. Just it is interesting to me. You know? Inevitably, the Rockies and the Marlins will be linked. Both coming into the league together. Iraqis and Marlins or not rivals by any stretch of the imagination. It's certainly if you are Iraqis Fan and the Marlins do something good. And the Rockies. Don't You inevitably draw that line between each other. And for the longest time, even though the Miami the now Miami Marlins used to be Florida Marlins have been more successful or tasted Oldham. Its success more than the Iraqis have. For the most part, the Marlins have been one of the worst run organizations. In all of baseball. We all remember Jeffrey Loria. Would buy a championship. Did buy a championship. 97 When Edgar Renteria got that hit off of Jose Mesa and the world Syriza's Sold everybody off. Because the wage bill would have been too high. But through that, by selling off all those players, he ended up getting a lot of really talented young players. Josh Beckett, Juan Pierre Carl Pavano. And they We're able to go win a championship, and then they were all sold off. Couple of ownership changes later, a monstrosity of a stadium poor attendance. Fire sales seemingly every other year incomes Derek Jeter and we thought that it was going to be more of the same. How in the world Is Derek Jeter. Going to Be the And he's not He runs the Marlins that he has a money man behind him. That helped him get the deal done as much money is Derek Jeter has made throughout his career. He can't outright by a major league baseball team himself, so he has kind of a What Silent partner that kind of front him the money, But he's the face. He's the guy that is making all the decisions. And it's something that We really haven't seen too much. And North American pro sports. We've seen plenty become G m's even presidents. And I guess that might be Derek Jeter's technical title, but two Be The owner. Of a team like the true owner, not nine. Justin Timberlake buying Air Peyton Manning's wife, buying shares of the Memphis Grizzlies. Like it's his team. And then they promptly had a fire sale. After he took over.
