"After I had set up a couple of hearings without being able to serve noted with papers I went to him and said look. Let's find mildred. Because I can set up hearings all day but what difference does it make if we can ever locate mildred? And so he set off to do that. I have given this story to other people and sometimes the the blowback is that I am trying to justify what John did or that. I don't think he's a bad guy. I mean clearly. The guy is a bad person with very very severe problems. I wouldn't try to justify that but there's more to this story. These preliminary decisions get made and people freak out about him because you're dealing with people's real personal lives and their intimate relationships with kids people who go through the process get really disturbed by that. I've been involved in a number of cases where the end result shootings. Tacoma was fairly famous for an incident. Where the chief of police shot is soon to be ex wife and killed her out the chief of police right so that guy must have had some degree of normal personality but then he lost it any melted down and it's not uncommon for these things to result in a lot of violence. One way to hopefully avoid that. It's possible is to have people air their grievances in court win or lose. They've at least been able to tell their story now. I'm not saying that that should require mildred to come stand with John by her side. By John. Muhammad's out there wandering. There was some process that could have played out where everybody could have had their day in court and he never did so I get. I tried to make clear that I I think what he did was horrific. I think it's It's just evil stuff but the kind of background story to it. That should be here. It is that I think there are ways that the system failed to defuse that kind of problem and instead it just sort of threw gasoline on a fire if we do not address the systemic failures that occurred in this case. I worry that there are other. People like that wandering. The streets and people are going to die if this problem is addressed in a better way just a week after John Lewis. The kids tragedy struck apparently up slain has just crashed into the World Trade Center here in New York City. It happened just a few moments ago had been meeting with John in my office. When the World Trade Center was burning to the ground he had no interest in any of the politics. He wanted to see his kid. John would later say that. Losing his kids was his own personal. Nine eleven it was surely a low point in his life. He lost his money in the rate and Antiga. He was living in a homeless shelter and now he'd lost his children. John's friend Robert Holmes the same friend who reported John to the FBI says John was devastated. Homes told Vanity Fair in two thousand four quote. I think that after his kids got taken away. John had a nervous breakdown. I'm not a professor or a doctor. John changed a million subtle ways. He'd spend all day some days just crying. All he could think of was getting his kids back. Back in. Fort Myers Florida Lee Boyd. Malvo was also struggling. He was trying to adjust to yet another new living situation. Lee had enrolled as a junior at Cypress Lake High School. He was getting good grades in His classes but he was struggling to navigate. The American system Lee wanted to go to college and one day. Become an airline pilot. But he didn't have a necessary documentation to sign up for the SAT's so we turn to John for help. Who thought that John had been a bad influence on her son and forbiddingly from talking to him but on weeknights. While worked at Red Lobster John would secretly call able to distinguish between Muhammad father and I had wanted and Mohammed Americans work. That will just fall into these. John told Lee get him into college but John wanted something in return and he needed to join him. In Washington John. Wildly money for Greyhound. Lee says that some time late in two thousand one after his mother fell asleep he packed up his clothes a tennis racket. And a portable. Cd Player. He snuck out of the house at four thirty. Am and got on a bus headed. Northwest Lee arrived in Bellingham Washington. A week later when I first in Bellingham. He told me that he's searching for the children. You said in order to get the children we're GONNA have to be whatever it takes. I looked at him as my family and my siblings. So I'm like okay. We're GONNA do whatever it takes. I understand abetment. Every time.

"Why why wait until tomorrow to talk about thanksgiving food? We'll talk about it today. Sure every day Thanksgiving Day for me. So what's the weirdest side dish for thanksgiving that you've you've had garlic and and anchovies on toast? Okay. I've run it that doesn't sound very good. Is it I'm not a big anchovy fan. So I like them. Okay. But I can't remember who told me this. He said he didn't eat them too much because they look a little too, much like eyebrows. So so what other sides are you up? Well, I like to have some kind of stuffing. I don't particularly like stuffing. I'll tell you. And what I do in lieu of that is I I make a batch of rock. I always be infill. Oh, yeah. And not enough restaurants do anyway. So it's something that for most people is kind of uncommon, and what are you you counting down somebody? We're gonna go to Suzanne online one. She's gonna disagree with you. Because Suzanne claims to have the best oyster dressing. Oh, welcome to the show. Suzanne. Thank you. I need to set this guy straits who's on you need to set him straight. I am. I am. Like all the other women in my life. I'm even willing to bring you a small castle Mulder's time. Did you tell me when and where and I will do it anytime of the year because? Opinion on it. But I. Angela had the best I would love to taste yours. But my voice addressing is my mother's recipe. And she just thought that the wasters and the bride was just too bland, even with all the seasonings. So she threw in four towns Italian sausage. There you go. John, cheese and half dozen oysters. It is amazing even people who don't. A lot of my waist addressing. It. Sounds good. So far. I mean, it sounds also kind of like talion style baked oysters like you used to get at Moscow's. Why you still do get him at Moscow's or since they say it, exactly exactly. So this is on where can we pick up our containers? I will. Because that was my mom's favorite oyster dress. And my dad used to make that as well with the dirty rice, those were the two sides that we always had at thanksgiving and always very good. It's the best. It's so good. And with the Italian sausage in it. Oh my gosh. See, I'm not sure I've ever had it with the Italian sausage. But nothing is bad with a talian sauce. Right. And I just picked up my I gotta plug science meat market. I just picked up four and a half pounds. In covington. Absolutely. I just went out my first choking. Yeah. That's right. All right. Thanks so much for calling. Appreciate it. So Tom a number of people. And I was telling you off air before we started the show that the last couple of years because of the family in and out and everything else we ended up beating out for thanksgiving. Which was a nice change for once. And we didn't have all the dishes do and I'll let you know, the cleanup and everything else in there. More seemed to be more and more restaurants that are opening for thanksgiving. I'm not sure I was trying to calculate that out. And I came up this year with forty restaurants that are I know are going to be open and would be pretty good to go to. But I'm not sure if that Eve's is like either dead, even or it might even be a little lower. Right. And I I, but I don't have any comparative the data go on that. But it's certainly better than it was when I was a bachelor man and on on Thanksgiving Day. I didn't have any place to go and wind up in a hotel usually hotel restaurant. And you would you would really feel like you were a derelict almost it was only these losers that were. And it's but that's not true anymore. This plenty of restaurants open. We went to roots last year. And we must have had fourteen of us. And there were a lot of big parties there, and and my other favorite place to go as resume does. They're going to be opened this year. The old Tony Angelo's there on. In lakeview. Learn on Florida Lee. Thank you. Thank you senior moment. And what other? Feeling what senior moments saw could w. What others are you aware of that are open that are great places to try out? Well, the Roosevelt hotel in hotels in general. Yeah, they have a lot of stuff going on because that's a largely their clientele, but they have several they're going to be opened with the blue room. They're going to be there with the. Now, I'm having a senior moment on the the the the it's a fountain the fountain, right, and they're all day long in their grand ballroom. They're putting out a major buffet. And they do a lot of things right there in front of you too. So that's that's a biggie. It's a little expensive. But it certainly you're celebrating and putting something out there. So I understand that you have a special glazing that you do on hand. Yeah. And it seems to be very popular around the WWL studio. And with good reason. I if if I ever become famous for any recipe, that's the one I'm going to become famous for it's a whole to say see ham what they call their VIP ham, which is the ham that you'd get sliced ham sandwiches at home. And I I just by that completely ready to go. It's already smoke that's already been cured and coat it with this mixture of. Root beer. There's some cinnamon cinnamon sticks and and cloves not clubs of garlic, but actual close and a bunch of other spices and things I change it a little bit every year put it on the outside. It's very thick coats the outside. There's a pretty good bit of Brown sugar in there too. And then roasted in the oven at three hundred fifty degrees. It takes about three and a half hours to get ready. It comes out. It's completely black on the outside. It looks very foreboding or forbidding. And at first I thought, you know, we're going to have some trouble with this. Maybe the kids will not really want to try something that looked like that turns out that the kids are the ones that like it. The most my daughter used to almost completely denude all of the black stuff off the off the ham and eat it all and and it's it's really good. Not it's not really sweet is in the background. What you mainly get is a little bit of an aroma of smoke because the ham has got that into. No, right. But just all of the ingredients come together pretty well. If I say so myself, and it's it's been copied a lot. You mentioned the blue room you're going to be hosting something on Wednesday. The twenty eighth that's route show there. Live from the blue room for a blue from three to five followed by an eat club dinner, delicious, gourmet dining what's out about. Well, the the eat club. It's something we started back in the nineteen fifty nineteen sixty nine around that time. Now that wouldn't have that I'm way off on it. Anyway, it's been about twenty five years that we've been doing these things, and it just listeners who come and join me for dinner, and we have a set menu. And it's it's usually a pretty good deal. What the Roosevelt wanted to do was to pull us together because this radio station WWL for a million years. They broadcast from the hotel that was their home. Right. And they wanted to celebrate the fact that they're in their one hundred twenty fifth anniversary this year, and they wanted to kind of combine that with WWL, and that's what we're doing. So we're doing the dinner that's going to be live music. You can. Dance. If you want to unless you don't know how to dance which I can't help you with and it should be a pretty pretty good evening. So they can reach out to the Roosevelt New Orleans dot com. Check that out in Georgia. George French trios the one that's going to be playing that they will. Indeed, I gotta get in touch with them to find out. What my song will be look out. Well, yeah. That's that's certainly true. You your memories of the blue room? I guess similar to mine for a long time. It was one of the most elegant places to go to an City New Orleans. It certainly was I was the one of the music writers for the Figaro newspaper. I don't know if you remember them, and I was with them for a long time. And I I would go to usually the concerts that nobody else wanted to go to the rock stars. And all that I would never get to go to any of those. But they had an opening because they had a a a a night for the press every every week just about and all of these fantastic stars of really another era by that time, my favorite one was when Ella Fitzgerald, and I she and I had lunch together. And what a thrill that was. Yeah. You know, I've heard about it not seeing. A lot of my toll scoot the other day. I saw Al green there at the blue run. I could believe that after having had Louis, prima, Louis prima. Was there all the time? Yeah. Actually in a lot of fond memories of the blue room. So this'll be a great event note Wednesday November the twenty eighth. That's right. You'll do your show live from three to five and then no be dinner afterwards as well as dancing to the George. French trio check it out at the Roosevelt New Orleans dot com. When we come back not only want to.

"I'm Michael cross. This is asked the garden. Geek, I'm your chief. Geek, and guess what? I got me a house plant. I got a house plant. I didn't get the house plan, by the way it was gotten for me. My lovely second wife. Diane. Who was married to my former producer Scotty, which is how she became my second wife, but long story Scott he's gone now. But anyway, Diane. Got me a different Kia now. That's very nice. I I love different Bach is she said, it'll look really good in your office. And I said, well, that's really nice over by the window. I said, that's really nice. I said, but you know, Ramona, Mike Catt small CAD Nike actually, not my cat. My son Zack's cat. I've been babysitting him for about six years. Anyway, Ramona just loves to chair these things up in different Baki is are very bad for cats because if a cat by sent to a different Bachir, it just tears them apart. I mean, it just it it paralyzes their jaw now. I have never seen this firsthand. I've just read about it. Who? So I, you know, I I like different different. I had a lot of difficulties before I had cats. But when I got cats, I got rid of the different back here. The original cat. I had was Doonesbury the cat and I loved you. And sorry, the cat. Doonesbury? You know, I got rid of the different Doonesbury was pretty good with all of the plants. I hadn't house then except for one. And that was the Laverne the fern who is in a big bowl type wide pot that I had in the family room, and it looked beautiful and Dewsbury decided that Laverne the fern was a perfect bed for her. And she would just go implied per Heine into the fern. And there was no stopping her. She just eventually ruined the fern. So I got rid of Laverne the firm, but do straight never bothered any of the other plants. These various pretty cool. But you know, I had I got Doonesbury. I think I had like three or four different boxes. But I got rid of them. I gave them to my mom s implants, all yours and got a cat. Okay. Then my sister got a cat. And I said you gotta get rid of the different Makia. My mom says no, we're not gonna re. Yeah. The the cat bites some bad things. So they took the different boxes and put them out on the low ni-. Where the cats didn't go cat stayed in house. They didn't go out in the high by the pool. So they, you know, they they kept that may they had cats and other house plants that the cast didn't bother but Ramona destroys houseplants and Diane gets me at different bocci that Ramona can destroy an Eaton be paralyzed. She stuck to thing in my office. And she says, I don't think it will go near it. Well, when I'm not here during the day, I shot and locked the door. So the cat cannot go in there because I'm really paranoid about this. I have a plant that is making me paranoid. And just because you're paranoid. Doesn't mean that they're out to get you. But anyway, I have a plant. That's making me paranoid. I should not have plants that make you paranoid. But it was a gift from Diana. I just. What am I what am I gonna do? I how am I going to handle this? I tried to be directed. I said, listen, you know, we can't do the cat cats going to be fine. Well, during the you know, the time that I am at home. And I go into that office cat doesn't in it's up on on a table. It's on a desk by a window catches doesn't go up there. But I'm just you know, I'm terrified that. I'm gonna leave the door open sometime in the cat's going go in there and eat the plant and have a paralyzed mouth and come home, and it'll just be a mess. You shouldn't have to live this way. Although beautiful plant. I'm enjoying the plant, and it's already starting to grow, right, right? From the very beginning. I see fresh shoots coming right out. No shock time or anything. But I did, you know. I I did. I said she goes, you know, it's going to go into shock because we just put it here. I said, no, it's not she goes why I said because I have something that will stop that from happening. So I went out until I grudge, and I got my little tiny bottle of super thrive, and I put one capful of super thrive in to a gallon jug and added water, and I took that and that is now the watering can for the different, and I watered it with that with the super thrive, and it didn't use much of it just about, you know, not even a court. Just not that big a pod. And the amazing thing is not only did the plant not go into shock. It. It just you know, it's just shooting out new shoots. It looks really good terrified and. That the casts going to go in there and eat it. Subtle way to live. So now that I tried the super thrive in it worked as far as keeping it from going into shock. Maybe the super thrive is keeping the cats from going into it. So now, we have this whole new inspiration. You know, I I have this whole new inspiration because I've got a spot in my living room. Just a perfect spot. A in a corner where I could put one of the weeping fig plants, and they are famous, and you know, I'm afraid Casca tear it up, but they are absolutely famous for dropping their leaves as I've said before many times I had a several of them in the house and Tarpon springs and every time you move one. They would drop the leaves you you get one you put it where it's supposed to be and you leave it there. And you know, it's going to drop the leaves as soon as you do it. Well, I I think I'm going to go get one and bring it home immediately water with the super thrive is see if that avoids the shock. I've never I've never tried that before so that would be a fun little experiment, and you know, I don't have a life. I just like to do. Little experiments with plants and and listen to my Alexa. But I tell her to to play. Hey, mister spaceman when every day when I come home, by the way, it's it's a new adventure. For me. I have to decide what song I'm gonna walk in the door and ask Alexa to play for me. It it is fun. This is what my life is an Alexa place in today was hey, mister spaceman and I walked down and listen to the birds. Hey, mister spaceman. It was it was pretty cool. But anyway, getting back to to that if I get the we weeping fig and stick it where I wanna stick it and use the super thrive. I will report back and let you know what happened. You know, the only time I ever use super thrive that I can think of I probably use it more than this. On my house. Plas is when I had a condominium that I lived in. I had a balcony, and I had a lot of the house plants out there, and I would move them in for the winter. And when I would move those plants in for the winter, I would always water them outside with a little solution of the super thrive before I moved them in. I thought that was good. And then one year, I didn't move them in in time. I don't know. I was busy and just one night. It got really really cold and those most of those were called damage, and I immediately you super thrive on them and every one of them came back they came back wonderfully. So, but that's been in the seventies. That I did that, you know, seventy eight seventy seventies. I had called on the seventy s so that that's when I did that. And I haven't used super thrive on house plants that I can remember, but you know, 'cause brains going maybe I have but that I can. Remember, I don't think I've used super thrive on house houseplants with the exception of now with the different Bachir to keep it from going into shock, and I'm going to get a weeping fig, I'm just I'm going to do that. And I'm going to see two things I'm going to see thing number one that that keeps it from going into shock and number two. If that keeps Ramona the cat away from them. And she doesn't go and terrorize it now if she goes and terrorizes that I'm going to have to get rid of the weeping fig because Ramona will go and terrorize it. So the other option that I have if it doesn't work out in the house would be to take it out into the backyard implant it, but the one thing you have to understand about weeping figs is it they have a root system, by the way. You can't do this up north. You can only do it in Florida, and there are several counties in Florida Lee county would be one of them that I know of that band's you, you are not allowed to plant one of these things outside because of the root system the root structure of those things is enormous. They spread out, and they eat plumbing, and they eat other plants. I mean, it is just terrible. So if I were going to do that, I would have to take it back to the fence way back to the fence and planet there and just let it grow, and it would grow enormously, and it would be very nice looking tree outside. So I'm going to try this out. I'm going to go buy one and see what hap-. You know, what's the worst that can happen by planet out in the.

"This was the song, was the number one song win the great recession hit ten years ago you remember that I sure do I was one of the folks who lost my job I mean it was a miserable time for me in the first time, in, my career that I didn't have. A paycheck and burned through my savings and so when when Americans talk about how? Desperate they were, I, sure identify with Aaron Katersky is our ABC news correspondent who has. Spent the last several, weeks? Going through all the data and resurrecting all those horrible stories of what it was like and. How I guess we've bounced back now. Aaron glad you could be with us tell me what you. Found out what you, recall and, and how we're doing today I think primarily we we dispensed with our. Concerns over the explicit lyrics of Katy Perry's I kissed a. Girl right And focused quickly on another thing. I dropped that pretty fast What we I think probably what we found through different stories in different parts of. The country, was that Americans Bill the country is, unquestionably back, I mean just look at the latest GDP report you. Know four point two percent growth in in the second quarter look at the stock, market corporate, profits by almost any economic measure. The country is you know Put the great recession. Well in the rear, view mirror, and, yet you, know, people are still feeling the effects I met a guy in in Saint Louis who story you'll hear on that he. Had umpire girls softball because he, lost his job when the auto. Industry nearly went belly up and so, while he's, back and and and has since out at a new permanent job in addition to his. I'm firing, he you know he he lost the, nest egg that he thought he would have and similar stories came out of a couple of. Women I, met in in southwestern Florida the foreclosure capital of the country they lost homes had to move like you know a bunch of times. Within a, short span because the rents keep going, up even, now and again they're in homes are living their lives. But maybe not to the extent they thought they would be at this point in, their lives So there has been some permanent. Damage or some at, least deep, damage, done to, the, Bank accounts of a lot of people who were presumably on track for their retirement twenty thirty years down the road. I also wonder as you as. You talk to folks do you. Sense a psychological impact on the American, worker I, know it it shook me up always heard my grandfather talk about the great depression and. Now I'm, you know I'm a little less likely, to get into an argument with the boss because I don't want to go through that again You know it's a, good point and, I think, that the psychological damage has hit us in a couple of different ways Americans for a long time we're saving more money Although that trend, seems. To have a little bit and we're back to you know spending on plastic but, we are also a. Little more leery, of of buying a. Home in Lee county Florida Lee county had the highest rate of foreclosure in the country back ten years ago the. People are either so Skittish about buying another home or the rules, have tightened for lending and and they just can't. Because their credit at this point a shot that the rents are actually going up because, everyone's renting, and so people are getting priced out of rental properties now and, that's been another lingering impact and I think the other the other bit is that, we we really tended to to to rush this away I'm you'll remember the tarp and the, troubled asset relief program and all the debate over you know bailing out the banks and. All of that in in those programs economists in years later are fairly, well at, agreement that those, programs ended up working but it still doesn't answer those lingering questions of what about what, about. Us in the country actually pay attention to people who lost their homes or or, lost their jobs or individual Those who were affected as opposed to these giant institutions and and I think that's you know. That's, been a question that's affected our politics ten years later yeah well there's no doubt that a lot of people felt left behind and probably still do and I wonder we don't have time to get into it right now wonder whether that's one of the reasons that so many people really have rallied behind Donald Trump is they think the billionaire from New York has their. Back when the rest of these guys didn't I I don't. Know that's just a just a. Thought no I think you're you're onto something I think without, the great recession just briefly there is no Donald. Trump and and frankly for for others there is no Bernie Sanders I mean it it's, supposed to, economic populism either on the right or the left that that that, was born out of such a painful event that now seems but a distant memory, well it's important for us to look back at that and for us not to forget the, people who were damaged and hopefully make sure we don't wind up in the same situation Aaron Katersky is our ABC news correspondent he's worked very hard on a program that we.
