"Hey guys, it's Rachel and this is a quick word. On flying solo. Oh, I just had the coolest experience you guys. I flew to Los Angeles for less than 20 four hours to go see. Stevie Nicks and Billy Joel in concert. And if you don't know this about me, Stevie Nicks, she's one of my all time favorites. I have seen Fleetwood Mac in concert many times. This was my first time seeing Stevie performed by herself, so I got to hear a lot of songs that were just her solo work. White winged dove and gold dust woman and I'm not gonna go into the list, but let's just say it was fantastic. Now, at the concert, there was someone sitting in front of me that reminded me of a younger version of myself because of what I watched go down in her. In her world and her energy field with the people she was with, the whole thing. And it had such a strong effect on me that I ended up writing about it because I'm writing a book right now. I ended up incorporating this moment into the book and it feels valid enough to talk to you guys about it too. The woman in front of me was in between a teenage boy and her husband. And neither the teenage boy or the husband wanted to be there. You could tell. They were not interested in this at all. They were just radiating, annoyance, they literally the teenager had his hood up. He was like slumped over in his seat. He was so pissed that he had to be at this concert. And the husband was just like a dud. Like he's just not into this. He's drinking beer and in between the two of them. Is this woman? And I can tell because one music fan to another, one Stevie fan to another. She is dying for Stevie Nicks. She is, I'm going to guess this is her first time seeing her in concert. She's taking 10,000 photos a million videos, and now all around, I want you to imagine the kind of woman who is a Stevie Nicks fan. It's some witchy vibes, right? It's like, there's a bunch of hippies up in this piece. We're all standing. We're all like kind of swaying to the music, living our best lives, there may or may not be bras involved. There may or may not be frizzy hair involved. We're just like all we're vibing. We're having a great time. And she is lightly swaying while taking a thousand photos and I can feel her energy. I can feel how badly she wants to stand up and dance, just like the rest of us. But at the same time, she's sandwiched in between two people, who do not want to be there. So she's doing this thing that I think all of us might be a victim of at some point in our life, which is we don't want to go to something alone. So we invite someone just to have a partner in crime, just to have someone to go to the thing with. Because maybe it doesn't even occur to you that you can go to a concert alone, or go to the movies alone, or go to the art exhibit alone, or the renaissance fair alone, or whatever thing you're into, that your people aren't into, you can totally do that by yourself. But when I was younger, I didn't know that. It literally never occurred to me that I could go try out the thing I was interested in by myself. And what's so wild what you don't understand is that if you go by yourself, you are very likely to meet other people to make friends that are into the exact thing that you're into. And y'all ask me all the time. You're like, Rach, how do you make friends as an adult? And my answer is always the same. You find commonality through shared interests. You are not ever going to be in a place where you are in 8th grade again, where you can meet people who are in the exact same phase of life that you are in in massive quantity, ready for the taking all around you. I mean, maybe you see people like your mom's group and they're in the same place or maybe in your church family, like you find someone who's like you and they're the same age and the same vibe. But I don't think that's the way to go about it. I think the way that we find community and friendship is that you find people who are not your same age, who are not your same vibe, but you have something that you both love. And I'm watching this woman have this experience destroyed by the negative energy of people who don't want to be there. And look. I mean, I sort of think that these boys in her life were jerks. I'm not going to lie. Because you know what? If she's this into it, and you agreed to come show up, show up for your woman, pretend for one night that you are a hippie and you want to be here. You can get yourself into the I bet she's gotten herself into the mood to watch your dumb baseball game a thousand times bro like just be here with her. Neither one of them were in that space. So what she's confronted with is that thing, if you've ever felt that anxiety of, oh no, I brought people to this thing that I love. They clearly are not enjoying it. And then them not enjoying it is now affecting your ability to enjoy it. Unfortunately, many of us were raised to people please, so we start to back off from our joy of the moment. We don't stand up and dance even though we want to dance because the people around us are already annoyed that we're there in the first place. And I'm not asking you to like fix the partner or change the perspective. My teenage sons also don't want to go see Stevie Nicks. But for me, I have learned to just go to the thing by myself. It's like my favorite. I did this a couple of months ago. I wanted to see Florence and the machine, which, by the way, you're easy to see a theme and the kind of music that I like to listen to. But I wanted to see Florence Welch, she was playing at the Hollywood Bowl, one of my favorite concert venues. And I asked everybody, my boyfriend, I asked friends that I knew I have a ton of friends in the music industry, I have a ton of friends who are artists, and I'm thinking one of these people is going to understand the magic of Florence Welch as much as I do, but nobody's into it. And so I'm faced with this moment. And like, I have best Rosie, my bestie. Rosie will go see this thing with me. She would. But she wouldn't enjoy it. Rosie would rather be watching Beyoncé, which, by the way, also huge fan of Beyoncé. But you have people in your life who would go because they love you, but I am telling you right now. You will have so much more fun doing the thing if you do the thing alone. It's also an incredible opportunity for you to mature. For you to remember that you are a grown ass adult, and you are allowed to pursue interests that do not align with your husband or your sister or your bestie like. That stuff that you're intrigued by, go do it. I am telling you you can start small, like take yourself to dinner alone. You love Indian food, it's too spicy for your wife, then go have Indian food by yourself. Period. Like you do not need to convince someone else to be into the things you're into. In fact, I think one of the ways that you feed your own spirit is you recognize that you have worth and value as an individual creature and that individual creature needs to be fed in ways that will only feed you. So go do something. And go do it alone. And whatever you
