"Shall we say it's very dysfunctional. Functional family We all have them. Sure yeah this character. You know has a various identities in the marvel universe in the comic world. she sometimes black widow. I believe she's also called white widow. I think she may have some other names but i think they learn the lessons of black widow. Here with this character in that they didn't start off with strong characterizations in ironman too in the audience was kind of apathetic to that character for a while. It feels like they'd learned and they said okay. We need to really nail this character out of the gate. We need to understand her personality. What she wants why. She's so interesting and why we want to follow this character going forward and i think you know. I'm hoping that this is going to start. A trend of marvel focusing more on wanting these characters out of the gate and making us care about them. Although i watched the marketing for shanxi. And i'm not so sure. They have learned that lesson. But i thought that florence pew i mean this is a movie star performance absolutely. I mean i've been a bit of florence. Pugh bend recently. I recently watched midsummer and the tv version of a little drum ago. So it feels like a culmination of as the puc. You is cool. It just rolls off the tongue. But yet i think she's fantastic She instantaneously has her own carrot to separate to black widow. She's not just a carbon copy. Which would be easy to do. You could create a new black widow. Which i suppose the having away she probably will assume the identity of black widow but she's her own person putting even in the post credits stain off towards which we might get onto the end. You avoid that few one. She is uncatchable racks. Earn waste situations. But i think the most important thing this film tells us is of course where black widow got her jacket from infancy will sort of thing you look after the fact that see if that actually was connected anything because yes. There's this whole runner with a vest because he alina buys this best in. It's the first thing she's ever bought for herself. Because when she was a child her and unattached where both recruited into the red room which is like a spy slash assassin agency where they drug the kids and then train them to be killers and they are very much controlled so they don't have their own identity so this best is the first thing she buys. And there's this whole runner of her commenting on this vest endlessly. Then she gives it to an attache at the end of the movie. And i'm like it. Did this pay off in some way. Turns out it did. The circle is complete. That's that's why they wait until after in game to do. This film is just so they can pay off. The jacket been clamoring for it makes sense. I want to talk about one of the weaknesses of the film. And that is ray winston okay. So what did what bothered you about him. It's the fact that he talks. Senators back into a british accent every other.

"Doesn't it's just like an adventure would have been like her movie. Her origin of become from being an assassin. To becoming an avenger. I think that they didn't want to do anything with hawkeye. Because jeremy renner and they need a guy in the movie to be you want a guy in a movie they did not want guy. Take the take any of the shine off right eight scar show up and they wanted to. They wanted to pass the baton to foreign pew. Want that. i'll tell you what overall i did really dig the movie. It's a solid decent movie. I really enjoyed the actually enjoyed the humor But i did. I was like this one's for the ladies it's got great female bettas characters. I believe it would pass the bechtol test. Am i wrong. There's i don't even know what the rules of the basic the basic premise being there. There's a scene where two women are talking. But then they're not talking about a guy or the guy subject and there's a lot of scenes this movie wear there's women talking and they have their own agency and it's not about this known this movie. I mean to that point though is in this movie about a guy. Controlling women didn't them not having agents about child trafficking. Yes it's all not. The whole entire point of the whole entire plot is driven by getting this guide in anything we talk about somebody around getting getting making. You're right you're right. I don't know that it'll care. I don't i don't understand the rules either. I could see the young girls loving this twelve year. old girls. This fucking hero. I thought the chemistry was great. Fucking humor is great the forgiving your family the themes of family was was also good. I enjoyed i. I really enjoyed florence pew. I think she has a ton of charisma. Onscreen loves her. I thought it was hilarious. I rate timing. David harbour kinda stole the movie for me. I love. I love you late. I'm making fun of the superhero pose and the whole thing with the vast that she's like. I knew he thought it was cool. Look at all these houses super funny. It's why don't you do this with your hand in your hair and leg the asylum that she was obsessed with cool as to die. All this is like this is not a cool way to die so funny so let me just get into the plot real quick here so get into it so she florence pugh whatever what is she in atlanta yelena programmed. Right in the beginning see yuliana gets deprogrammed. And she's like..

"Let's start with a new marvel movie about scarlet johannesson's character from the marvel universe. It's called black widows. Lift a lot of lives enter this feeling. I mean mistakes choosing the world wants to be. Sounds like it's going to be a big hit. Is it any good. Oh it's going to be huge. I mean the marvel universe fans have been waiting for this for months and months and months. And now it's available In theaters and it's also on disney plus so they can see it there as well It's going to be the apparently the only black widow films. since scarlets hanson's character actually died in adventures came This story is said a little before that and she goes back to Eastern europe In order to track down and Ruin of the great russian spy master. Who made her into a spy in the first place And she also reunites with her fake family with which you who she was an undercover spy In the united states in the nineteen nineties in order to bring this fellow down so it's a combination of family drama. Shall we say with a big action. Splashy action movie I found the intimate moments in this film actually better than the action ones which are in the typical modern way over cuts So that you can't really tell what's going on a lot of fun and just overloaded with cgi The real star of the film although hansen is very good is florence pew Who plays her younger so-called sister they were sisters when they were undercover spies And they unite along with their father and mother in order to bring down this terrible russian mastermind who still wants to dominate the world. With his army brainwashed young women called widows The people who fans of the far a marvel universe are gonna love this film. They're going to go out to it in droves they're going to pay for it is a plus is going to be a huge success. But it's really a kind of footnote to the series as a whole. It doesn't advance the overall mar marble saga very much And as i say it's probably a one offers scarlett johansson who whose character unless she miraculously comes to life. We'll have to remain dead after this episode. That's black widow next. Don cheadle and benicio del toro starring a crime movie where routine job goes sideways. And they've got to figure out what happened. It's.

"It taskmaster doesn't care about elena so she let's go for sister in order to try to save her was my. Oh yeah you're right. It's her that does it. And that does make sense right and we know. She has a sacrificial thread in her personality. Because we've seen her right. I mean back into the present day of the marvel universe. Sacrifice herself for the entire. Just oh but yeah so. They land on the ground. There isn't really a final fight between natasha and taskmaster as natasha uses the last bit of the antidote to d pergram taskmaster. She managed to sort of apologized to her and then that sort of the end of that storyline. Natasha goes back to go be an adventure again. Elena alexei and molina go off in their own direction. But then we have that mid credits scene if you want to talk about that. Yeah i mean you gotta stick around for the stinger in a marvel movie you you need to be indoctrinated into the next movie that you will be forced marched into the theater to see but i'm actually sort of excited about this when becoming deprogrammed from marvel or throw some sparkly red powder in my eyes but no i actually am and i think i said this is my review. A little bit excited about whenever the follow up movie is going to be that set up in this post credit stinger because it not only involves florence pugh who presumably is going to get her own personality and suit an entire Superhero brand but also julia louis dreyfuss who at least in the marvel movies and new person to see. Apparently she has been in one of the spinoff tv shows. I don't really follow them. So i didn't know that i don't even know if she's doing the same character she just oh it is so. Do you know about her character what she going to be a little bit. Yeah so. She showed up in falcon in the winter soldier to recruit wyatt russell's character. Who was the disgraced captain america. So her character isn't one hundred percent confirmed yet. But her name contessa valentina in the comics. She is known as madame hydra so they seem to be setting yelena up sort of as an antagonist in that way because as we know hydra equals evil and if they do go that direction with julia louis dreyfus's character. She seems to be putting together sort of a second sect within the new vendors. That isn't necessarily as good as we would hope them to be. But elena is so great. I have no doubt that she will become a hero hero by the end of the marvel. Timeline yeah i mean yeah. Florence pew like you said seems to be able to hop from period pieces to. These kind of big blockbusters seem at home and seem charismatic. Wherever she goes. I hope this doesn't become her whole career. Obviously so afraid. That's what's going to happen. So let's describe what happens in this in this. Meet up between julia louis dreyfuss in florence pew at the grave of the black widow. Yeah so this takes place presumably closer to where the marvel movies and tv shows are at right. Now we see elena visiting natasha's grave to just pay her respects but while she's there she is joined by julia. Louis dreyfus character..

"I necessarily saw her being able to do some of that. Action film making acting that you were talking about which is a skill scarlett. Johansson has always been very good at that. She's here too many action movies over the years. Lucy and so for florence pew. I mean we last saw her in little women right. That was that. Didn't it didn't exactly scream knife-wielding murderous but she you know she has ranged. She has ranged and she also she. She is just like powerful you know like small but mighty and so. It doesn't surprise me that there's one shot where she's doing her movie star ron and as paul florence back this year movie star ryan. But it's pretty good. I liked it. She was good. She was effective. The stinger effectively ends this way. The movie comes to a conclusion in the year. Two thousand sixteen. We understand that yelena the series of fan bots have gone off to work towards a better 'cause once they've been program deprogrammed exactly and then we fast forward to the future to a post game moment where yuliana is visiting natasha's grief and she's come to lay flowers at her adopted sister sort of associated sister's grave. And who shows up. But julia louis dreyfuss now did you. Totally normal person to show up. And i was like what is happening. So that tells me the you did not watch the falcons in the winter soldier. Because i told you myself that i did not watch the falcon in the winter soldier. I listen to you every. Watch podcast about it. But wesley was like no. You don't need to watch it. It's not that good so fast he was right. You don't need to watch you. Also donate to watch it because you co host the show with me and i will watch it and then tell you what happens. Yeah great But effectively what happened at the end of that series. Is that this character. Valentina allegra d fontaine. Who's kind of a well known. I don't i don't know how to describe her. She's like a that. Sounds like a seven year old made up like fancy wealthy lady who's gonna fund a superhero network..

"She also was adopted. I'm like oh shit that this old man loki lake have her and just kind of like paul just kind of like i'm done with you like he had her but he'd never wanted anything to do with her and now she knows what a piece of shit he is. She's coming hardcore after of. It's almost like you weren't there for me like i'm coming here for you. I don't know that's the way i took it. But i'm i've been so for this series and i thought this was a great little intimate almost bottle episode to see two different versions of loki in their shared yet different experiences. Yeah did you pick up on a little bit of flirting between them at this when they're talking with one another like totally totally. Yeah yeah. I don't know but like it. Just i was just catching on. Especially since you brought up to richard. E grant thing occult like for the past couple of weeks. It was just like how she was so disgusted. Yeah he brought her name. It's like she definitely like she has daddy issues like david he have her and then was just like fuck you. I'm done with you. And she was raised by somebody else. And now it's her goal to get back at this guy. I think that if we are looking at it loki. There definitely is kind of like a story there. Where like you know. I think she's been scorned by him. Maybe created her for a purpose. She didn't live up to that purpose. I mean we've been seeing legacy in phase four so far with with a lot of things coming up. I mean look at look at sean chee. I mean we've got in that new trailer you know you've got wen wu mandarin saying you know you you know in order to wield this power you have to. You know you have to prove yourself and and even the you know the black widow movie we might get a new black widow the passing of the torch to florence pew as you lena belowa as black widow. Possibly the attorneys have kind of like made their impact their legacy throughout the marvel cinematic universe and and just history in general and then. We're getting kate bishop as hawkeye. I mean billy and tommy and vision. I feel like there is like this kind of like legacy thing. That's going on here in the series is called key and for me it. Just kinda like book ed's everything to have not only lady low key but like an old man. Loki are low key and possibly even kid loki showing up in this series at one point which i think we will see jack. Veal actor young actor jacksonville. I think jacksonville will be showing up as a as a young lucky in this series so that character has the biggest chance of that moves onto. Yeah one hundred percents legacy characters venus. I don't think i don't think at the end of the day. I don't think that. I don't think that time it'll be has to be i. Don't i think like. I think we're opening up the multi-diverse plenty of room for these locals to exist until we get the secret war. It's like once we get the secret war man. Then everything's gonna change. But i think like are loki. Tom huddleston could still be around. Even after the events of this series but moving forward in the series. I'm predicting that jack veal is going to be introduced..

"In places to stalk celebrities during the day popular shopping areas like Melrose Avenue Rodeo drive or the grove were ideal hunting grounds for celebrity hungry paparazzi outdoor cafes bla-bla-bla after Kovic struck the only place that everyone went was the supermarket potsy stakeout, the parking lots of all the upscale markets like Bristol farms, air one Gilson's and watched for arriving celebrities cars. COVID also change celebrity shopping habits. Now they have to wear masks liberties think nothing of going to the market or anywhere else they might have avoided before for fear of being recognized some love going out incognito and they don't have to worry about how they look. It's more fun shopping in Hollywood. Now, you never know that mass person fondling avocados right next to you gwen. Stafani. Enjoyed a supermarket visit this weekend to her sons but you could tell that it was Gwen Stafani. Specific operatic photo. But I love the idea of Paparazzi sticking out Gilson's the hot spots. And I love the idea of celebrities being like I'm a little freer I feel free suddenly with this mask on, you can't tell I I mean I'm usually good at spotting celebrities or whatever but it's like with a mask and sunglasses and maybe a hat you're good to go like that is basically a full face covering I had the strangest experiences walking down the street yesterday and I saw someone cross the street in front of me. You know like six feet away seven feet away and I was like it's Florence Pew like it was a weird little blind fart that's Florence pugh but it was just some woman in a mask and then after. The second of thinking that of like thinking that that was Florence pugh and a mask six, three feet from me I was like are you out of your mind? My brain is still doing the New York thing being desperate to celebrities, and again I never see celebrities very rarely celebrities and here I am for half a second thinking that I saw Lawrence view in a mask in my neighborhood you could see if you went into Manhattan Amelia Atala Junior and Katie Holmes because those two are just stop and down the street all the time they're still smooching seem.

"No Insurance Yeah there's a big difference own huge huge Dave. Yes I was telling you earlier about how this is not related to the Podcast whatsoever but talking to you about like celebrity women who don't understand their value in dating like men that don't make any sense. I I do remember that and I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the fact that you just found out that Florence pugh dating Zach braff upsets me so much Sid Steinberg posted something on instagram about Florence. Pugh dating Zach Braff and I couldn't stop message her going know what no no. I mean I I. It's it's funny well. It's funny for a lot of reasons. Zach braff gets a lot of shit and I'm not even. I'm not coming to defend him because I don't find myself a of him a model. Braff Stan Rafi. I wish I hope. He calls his fans Bradtke's if he's missing outlets like the perfect name for them. I think the I think he's not the worst guy in the world. But I'd exactly what you're saying of these celebrities not or these women not understanding they're worth it's like sh- Florence. Pugh is not only extremely young but she is like she's on a run that I don't know maybe it's I cook. You compare her to set like in better movies right now. Social Ronin these actresses who are up and coming and are being talked about and are being a rightfully loaded for being super talented. You know she was just admit some are she was in little women. She's amazing little women And I think it's really only gonNA get better and better for her. I think the reason that the Internet is going crazy is that it just doesn't make any sense for this. I twenty three twenty four year old woman to be dating this guy who had a Sitcom Ron in the early two thousands. Who made a really silly movie that we all kind of make fun of now? No offence to people who still like Garden State? But it's like Zach. Braff is a meam. And he's dating one of the most sought after popular Young adorable Hollywood women. It is not right. Look I also agree with you. I don't I don't know anything about Zach Braff but I don't think he's bad. I just think she could literally date any man she wants or any woman she wants. Whose ARTISTIC AN INTERESTING DYNAMIC. I just like. If I was matchmaker this would be not the match. I mean it's certainly not anything that I I would never in a million years I would go. Yeah maybe she should just go out with Timothy Xiaomei for six months and see how that try that on for size. I don't think that would be that much better than Zach braff. But he's at least artistic at least like at least he has angst or something. You know. It's just really I mean Florence Pew also this Kinda ties into the theme of our show because I don't know if you have seen this. But Forms Pew Has Gone on instagram. Live a bunch of times and cooked stopping or and a ton of it. I keep watching. It's really mesmerizing creepy. Thing is that in quarantine. It's probably Zach braff kitchen. I mean let's be honest. Dan You know in his house in Malibu. I'm sure he lives in Malibu for I mean there's no there's no doubt about it but really no other place for that guy to live. I mean actually he would he. I could see him having a big old Silverlake Hills House Meteo. Actually I could also see him living at so house. I could see him having a house with a room. That's full of guitars. But he doesn't know how to play guitar but he knows the value in particular of each guitar and they're all vintage and totally wasted on him. Yeah I don't it's like here's the thing. I don't think Florence pugh has been brainwashed. It's also really funny to speculate on the lives of celebrities. Because at their core they are they are just people but they happen to be beautiful. Enigmatic people that you see on a giant screen. I think we're both so funny is that we don't actually ever gossip on this like we're not a gossip gossip podcast but I just couldn't stop talking about it. No I it really it. Every time in the casino it doesn't haunt my dreams like I don't think about it all the time but anytime I see something online I just think it's you know he's not in those instagram cooking. Things she's not talking about him He doesn't have a huge presence in her she has. He has no presence in her online persona today. Oh did she post something? Because it's his birthday. We'll tell me what she posted a photo album. That says Hey. We shall smile wider than the clouds are grey. April six and we're celebrating heart happy birthday wishes bogies and cheers for this special person. Raise those bubbles and Jiggle of Zach braff laying on a dog that I'm upset I don't like it. I don't want this for her. I I want something better for her. You know if they. This is a bad comparison because neither of these people are famous. But I have a couple of friends. Nope that's true. I have one friend who has been with the same. The same extremely agent appropriate person and this age difference there puts foreign spewed Zach. Braff to shame but they've been dating for all. I think at this point over a decade and when it was happening we were all like. Oh this isn't GonNa last. This is weird and then it kind of kept happening and then I look like I might not happen anymore. We we thought. Oh thank God and then it kept happening and he kept happening. And now it's just this weird thing that exists so there is a tiny chance that those two you could Go the distance like she's going to be thirty and he's going to be fifty.

Oscars 2020 Preview
"HI everybody. It's Peter Travers. Here here with this special edition of Popcorn which we're calling the Oscar popcorn because this weekend on February ninth exactly everybody will be watching. Being the Oscar telecast on ABC and probably having their own little ballot. Like I have here trying to figure out who's going to win this damn thing and if the person I don't like winds pushed I put my money on. That's what really happens. That's what people ask me on the street. So I'm GonNa take you through these main categories and and we'll see what will win what should win and we can argue. You can find me somewhere and we can argue about it. But I'm going to start with with best supporting actress. Because that's how the Academy Awards those that's always the first award that we say Kathy Bates in Richard Jewel. Laura dern in marriage in story Scarlett Johansson in Joe Rabbit Florence Pew in Little Women and Margot Robbie in bombshell so look. There's it's a lot of good people here and I have to say right at the outset. That Scarlett Johansson is one of those rare actors that has a nomination as best actress. Chris and best supporting actress marriage story for Best Actress in here supporting which usually gets you to win one and that usually that it's usually that one but it's it's not going to happen you know I'm sitting here saying did I read wrong. What happened to Jennifer Lopez and hustlers? Hasn't she been in this game since the release Lisa Hustler she has and yet the academy you bad people have decided that J.. Lo just wasn't Oscar material while you're wrong but look we we have to deal with rats here and I'm going to say that the person who will win in this category is also the person who should win. And that is Laura Burn and Laura dern in marriage story plays a divorce lawyer and she's a tough one and let's think of all the Hollywood people that are voting for this award and how every single one of them I'll wager. A BET has their own divorce lawyer and has been through this process. Maybe more than once. Maybe two we're three times to do it. And they find Laura Dern Dunn's in this movie something spectacular it's also one of the few awards. I think that marriage story story is going to win. But Laura Dern has never won an Oscar. This will be her first time. Everyone loves her. We all love and big little lies and I think this is her time on so let her have it all right. I'm moving onto best supporting actor. Tom Hanks in a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Anthony Hopkins in the two popes Al Al Pacino in the Irishman Joe Pesci in the Irishman and Brad Pitt in once upon a time in Hollywood. Look you're talking to a big Irishman fan here so if it was me saying come up for the gold it would be Joe. Patchy I know Joe Pesci doesn't do any publicity. He basically sticks fix to himself. He's probably tough guy in real life as the gangster that he plays in the Irishman but that performance is amazing and won won his first Oscar for another score says he movie goodfellas where he was the most scary gangster. You can see here. He's kind of quiet dawn. So if I'm I'm giving them it would be Joe Patchy but the academy is giving this award and no one. No one can win. This except Brad Pitt. These other people here Tom Hanks Anthony Hopkins Al Pacino and Peci all have won Oscars so they already have the gold. Do you realize his full career. Brad Brad Pitt has never won an academy award game over people. This is it Brad. You're going to get in once upon a time in Hollywood playing a stuntman. It man playing somebody who's been around the business. I think it's irresistible for Hollywood to say I'm going to reject one of my own. Plus he was great in the movie. You seem to hear my voice that I have a little bit of a problem. Yeah I do. Because that's not a supporting performance at all that his part is the equal who of his Co Star Leonardo DiCaprio's WHO's nominated for best actor. So why is he in that category. I think they want to win. And Brad you might as well prepare repair your speech right now okay. I am now moving onto best actress. Cynthia Haribo in Harriet Scarlett Johansson in marriage story. Sir Sharon in little women. Charlie's Sharon in bombshell and Renee Zellweger in Judy. What Best S. actress award so far from the Golden Globes to the critics choice awards has it Renee Zellweger one? She's won all of them. So is there any possibility ability here for something else. I mean. Look what Charlie. Stern did in bombshell. She not only plays Megan Kelly. The makeup geniuses have made her look exactly exactly like her and Charlie's has talked exactly like are they love bio pics there so she should be really strong. Social Ronin is like twenty five years old. She's he's on her fourth Oscar nomination. This is incredible and Scarlett Johansson. Like I said nominated for best. Supporting actress and Best Actress. Cynthia revolt is playing Harry Tubman and she also wrote the song from the movie which is nominated. That happened to somebody last year. Didn't it yes it was lady. Eating Gaga Lady Gaga was nominated for writing that wonderful song from stars born and his best actress. But what did you win. She won best song and that was it so I have to say that again. I would give this award person late to search for Ronin just because I think to be that young and to be that consistently brilliant is amazing and her performance in little women. Is that good. But it's Rene as I talk about. How Hollywood would love bio-pics this is? Judy Garland that she's playing judy. This is one of their own. Did they ever give. Judy Garland her own Oscar Competitive Competitive Acting Oscar. Never and I think for that reason not only will renee Zellweger win best actress but she will win for Oscar. Judy Garland on never had. It's their way of saying Judy. We love you. We were so stupid not to give it to you. And we're going to give it to Rene in honor of you. This is how Hollywood works. It's really crazy. But if you're betting on this you have to bet crazy. Aright best actor Antonio Banderas in pain and gory. Leonardo di Caprio in once upon a time in Hollywood Adam driver in marriage story what came Phoenix and joker and Jonathan Pryce in the two popes. I look at this category and before I get into. Who Will Win and who should win? I've I've got to say academy what you have against Comedians. And what do you have against Eddie Murphy. That he's not nominated for Dole. Might as my name what you have against Adam Sandler who proved his dramatic chops in uncut gems. Like nobody can believe and yet they have it they only like to give Oscars to actors serious actors who played comic roles. Ause they hate anybody who's making a living as a comic to actually win this war so this year's been going along I've had this feeling that this was Adam drivers to lose that performance in marriage story is one of the best things he's ever done or that I've seen this year and yet there's this other guy and who's that other guy he's Joaquin Phoenix plane joker. Sometimes there's that kind of performance sometimes. There's there's one that just so dominates the screen. That is such an act of immersion of from an actor in a raw. Yeah Joaquin was scary. He was sometimes funny. He was always touching even though he's playing somebody who's totally out of his mind and a lot of this movie his in his mind. What Cain has been nominated several times before and never one Joaquin? This is yours. I can't believe any set of circumstances. Stances if you WANNA bet the whole house on something and somebody to win it's going to be Joaquin Phoenix as best actor for joker game over all right. We're ready now to move on. I'm going to best director now. This is one of the most exciting categories because these people will these particular men and save and because Hollywood as wont of decided that even though there were more women directing movies than ever before four last year. They couldn't find any to nominate which is of course absurd because Greta Gerwig directed little women which is nominated as best picture and they. I thought no I'm just GONNA do five men like we always do what happened. You people sort of learned a couple of years ago when you nominated Greta. GERWIG quick for Ladybird didn't give it to her. But you nominated her. The KADEMI is ninety two years old. Now how many women has given an academy award for directing one. And that's Kathryn Bigelow for hurt locker. Ninety two years one award hang your head in shame name anyway not knocking any of these men that did get nominated. But there's one in there that I would sacrifice for Greta Gerwig but you you try to guess who that is anyway. Here they are. Martin Scorsese the Irishman Todd Phillips. For Joker Sam Mendes for nine thousand nine hundred Seventeen Quentin Tarantino eighteen. O for once upon a time in Hollywood and Bung June hope for parasite every one of these guys you can make a case for. Martin Scorsese Z.. To me is a master the grandmaster who only has one Oscar for directing and then the Irishman is doing some of his best work. Ever Quentin Tarantino. Not No with once upon a time in Hollywood is also a peak form and yet I'm saying this category is going to between two other the directors one of them being the South Korean Vong June Hall for parasite a Foreign Language Film. That seems to have got everybody excited about what's possible and then Sam Mendes for nine hundred seventeen a world war one movie that is constructed to look like it was done in in one continuous. Take how do you resist that. You don't even though I think they would really like to give their best director award worked. Bon John. How it's going to be for Sam Mendes for creating a war movie like no war movie we've ever seen before so sam I think think it's yours but if you're getting out there and you WanNa go to Bung Jun Ho? You know you might do it because there's always a surprise in these contests we can't go. Oh by what the odds are we have to go by sometimes the academy saying I have an instinct for this. I have a feeling this is the right way to go all right last category. Are we ready best picture of the year Ford versus Ferrari the Irishman Joe. Joe Rabbit Joker her little women marriage story nineteen seventeen once upon a time in Hollywood and parasite here is is the one you know every year I do this. It's between one or two movies this year. I can't reduce anything to to the Irishman my estimation a classic one for the ages. Martin Scorsese. Ed Is Best Robert De Niro Pacino. Joe Patchy making a mob movie about old-age age about the end of a mobster. This is the punishment that they get for the lives they live. There's nobody in their lives there alone. It's a tragedy Quentin went and Tarintino. Once upon a time in Hollywood is writing about Hollywood in the sixties and about a time that he thought was the last creative burst of Hollywood Hollywood and doing that. Nineteen seventeen again the World War One movie shot to make it look like. It's one continue steak and parasite a movie about a Korean Rian family in which they exploited the people they work for and then are exploited by the people working for them it is a classic. These are four incredible classics. So what am I gonNA do. What am I going to tell you? What's out there that you have to say? This is the winner and I'm going to go with with all excuses. No excuses in fact to my love for the Irishman. But I think this is the year of Quentin Tarantino. I I think once upon a time in Hollywood being a love letter to Hollywood and being voted on by people who live and work in Hollywood Quentin Tarantino despite right brilliant work with pulp fiction inglorious bastards reservoir dogs Django unchained has never won a Best Picture Oscar or a best director Oscar. Never it's never happened. What better time than now? When he saying Hollywood I love you? I think it's time Hollywood to say to Quentin Tarantino. I love you back back. So you've got it watch the show and afterwards we'll have a discussion.

I Love Scott Hanson by the way marriage story. I thought she was good. Not Great Jiji Arabia. She was great brilliant. So I would not begrudge at all for that one and I'm sure she'll really care about opinion. Florence pugh had amazing things and the reaction video. Vc Man it's really sweet until you realize that Braff is recorded Ede's line. Hey where do you stand on this right because that breath is like ridiculous in more like twenty years ago is that is that right twenty three something on Easter. Never been so but yeah aphids her performance remain. She's having an incredible moment. She is having in a moment. I'm lonely continuing. I'm the site who I think should get an aside. Who will probably get it? I think probably probably Florence period because she does recognition for a holy end. She's she's great and little women and I think Scott Hanson is GONNA get judge. I think Lauren Undone is going to get for marriage. Serie very good. She's very good in that. I think the political stuff about bombshell does not say I think they want to keep their sticky fingers away from that and apparently guys Fars should bride. I make sense or lots it. So let's go with Best Animated Feature House Train Your Dragon the hidden world. Aw I lost my body. Claps missing link and Toy Story for which might again Andrew again haven't seen enough of these Burke Claus has gone applauded is very very good. Not Many I mean. How often do we get great Christmas movies and with of a real alternative twist say maybe Sergio loss? I think everyone is saying it's going to be either claus or two three four. I think it's going to be diluted and I think that's how come how train your dragon the hidden world has been cleaning up in other categories in other ceremonies. So I think it's GONNA GONNA be a shock. I think that's going to be house trained dragon. Oh well toy story. Four was very surprisingly very good. Surprisingly average in my opinion. Yeah I think okay get life it was like a generous fullness fool very generous law you you'll love Okay cinematography. Oh sorry the actual achievements in cinematography. The nominees are the Irishman jonker lighthouse. Nine hundred seventeen one time in Hollywood men men everywhere everywhere I could see writes something hands down absolutely no in questions asked and when you watch it you groom answer any of A. Do I win. You probably win though I asked him black want want people that issue.
Florence Pugh on Little Women, Oscar Nomination & Meryl Streep - Jimmy Kimmel Live
"Top five films of the year. I can't believe that I'm so in line with the academy but my top five were all nominated for best picture parasite the Irishman Mary Story Little Women. And once upon a time in Hollywood and I am grateful that little women at least wasn't completely overlook getting six nominations that one for director Jour- obviously is one the bugs me and I also think it was surely one of the best edited films of the year but happy about Florence pugh and some of the other nominations at got yeah definitely Florence. Pew is someone. I voted for best adapted. Screenplay was a no brainer so I'm glad to see that they honored little women there as well and there were things that I was happy about also I mean it. It isn't all gloom and doom for me five of films that made my top ten of twenty nineteen were recognized in major categories so best picture nominations for parasite the the Irishman and Joe. Joe Rabbit. Those were all my top. Ten best actor nod for Antonio Banderas in pain and glory. I mean it seems like you shouldn't have to say this but I was worried just because it's a Spanish language performance It might be overlooked or relegated to the sidelines. So I'm glad that didn't happen. And best original screenplay nomination for for my number nine film of the year. Ryen Johnson's knives out. We talked about the intricacy and the cleverness yet also the entertainment factor actor all coming together in that screenplay so it had to get that

"It's a good it's a good performance but I would be in my top five all right Florence pew from little women I talked to her before she has she's really interesting and I think she got a lot of range at a lot of potential and yeah we'll see it's very possible she went and Margot Robbie for a bomb shell she's good news Christians face every time I say the word bomb shell it's like such exasperation is hi role it's a piece on fox news yeah there is a great story here and the movie really on I was ignores it but it it it has so many other things on its mind Margot Robbie has a great scene in this movie one great scene where she's interviewing with Roger ailes any asks her to spend which is so degrading in so many ways and I I love that scene maybe if you want to give it that the word for that scene get it but if the movie itself is so light weight and then when I ask you one question does anybody actually watch the animated films because I'm here to tell you maybe one of these films deserves to be one of the top five they left out so many phenomenal phenomenal films that I just thought were absolutely outstanding wonder park I absolutely loved that movie that's available on Amazon prime right now it is so good and it is it's it's a it's a it's a movie about a kid with depression which you're really thinking out well that sounds like a lot of fun it's a beautiful film the story's fantastic is just wonderful and abominable I just told you this past week two weekends ago trying to start what to watch with Q. and we watch the trailer for abominable I was excited I was like okay fine it is fantastic absolutely fantastic and the movies that they have nominated for animated feature which is my wheel house is the mom of a ten year old not impressed with any these I hated missing link and faded it missing like I've never seen a movie that's been so diversity in that some people say it's racist and or sexist some people say it's actually charming and wonderful after that the second film that we talked about today have not seen but doubt frozen Tooting get listed there in that category I managed to have we haven't seen that yet we're just gonna pretend it doesn't exist okay you're the person who hasn't seen it we're just gonna let it go and we're just gonna let it go we tried to go but it was sold out so we want to see something else instead not remember what the the something else was the it was unfortunate that we have to go see that it was the one about spies in disguise we will Smith right save your money an entire it's the opposite of good bad movie that by the end of it you're like just praying for death or something for the credits roll it had great potential and and they basically just said Hey what problem can we just grab from every kid's movie and throw it in there and and that was it if it was one of those movies that for me a good kids movie is entertaining and you don't feel like they're talking down to the kids yeah the good ones yeah that they walk that line between Hey a couple jokes for the dell some for the kids but it's not in the insulting exactly this was just a mind numbingly stupid wonder park watch it I'm telling you I I loved it I thought it was fantastic Christian Turner you're awesome thank you for coming in today and we'll have you back in perhaps after the Oscars we don't you know there's all the other categories nobody cares about let's be real and I'll be perfectly Frank I'm not gonna watch the Oscars do you find it interesting that for the second year they're having a host no I'm not surprised at all I don't think so I don't think people care well that the ratings went up slightly last year so that was that can help them out but also so if you're a comedian would you take that no no no no now so what committee would pass the vetting process correct because it's a very important job you have to be strictly a a good person you can have at and on toward tweet ever now you can't tell the wrong joke ever you cannot under tip the valet yeah I can not have ever accidentally not left your towels in the tub when you leave the hotel room I mean it's insane the family and say they will find you and they'll put it on Twitter and the live pictures and you'll be embarrassed check out all of Christians work he writes not just about movies but about culture and all kinds of stuff in Hollywood in toto dot com outstanding website Christian joy is always thanks for coming in thank you all righty Susan what can what is coming up in your news because when we get back the franchise "All right. Let's just dive into the nominees for the Oscars. Isa Ray and John Show announced them at the early hour of five eighteen. Am this morning. And now I'm going to read them to you right now. Oh okay the best picture. Nominees are Ford versus Ferrari the Irishman Joe. KOREAN BAST picture nominee. Okay here's the directing. Pretty Cool also nominated donated. Is Charlie's thrown for bombshell and Renee Zellweger for Judy. Who is my personal favorite? I mean everyone in this category I I think is fantastic but judy is for some reason. My favorite movie of this Oscar season I just. I don't know somethings like broken in my brain because as I feel like I'm the only one that thinks judy is the best movie of all time but I fully acknowledged that my taste in movies is you know not normal anyway now for actor in a leading role we've got Antonio Banderas for Pain and Glory Leo DiCaprio Aka. LDC is nominated for once. It's part time in Hollywood. Adam drivers nominated for marriage story. Walking Phoenix is nominated for Joker and Jonathan. Pryce is nominated for the two popes oops. "If we're going to write like a buzzfeed quiz about it or do you try to describe it quickly to people but i've been bristling recently reading various articles. Calling amy is the spoiled brat and i'm like no she. I mean she's the youngest she's a kid when this story starts and there's a whole stretch of the book where she's older and she's not a spoiled brat so <hes> yay justice for amy. March is my point yeah. Amy i think goes through the most interesting transformation over the course of the book like she goes from this spoiled brat who like it's her pickle limestone out by the teacher feature to have kind of putting laureate has placed when they're in europe. It's a really interesting transformation and you think about in the nineteen ninety four movie where they had a young amien an old amy kass. I think that's the only character that had younger and older versions and in the greta gerwig movie coming at christmas which is the reason this is in her book. Club is going to be played just by one actress by florence pew which is going to be really fascinating waiting to watch. I think it's interesting because you and i were talking about this a little bit katie. You have to cast these women's carefully as as we do you think about them growing like thinking about emma watson being a young mother is something left to think of as she's she's playing yeah and the about floors lawrence pugh is such clever casting because i could really see her like being convincingly quite young and then convincingly older. You know what i mean and i think that's really really smart castings and i'm interested it. I think we can all agree. That timothy shalam was born to play laurie. Oh my god his hair alone is essential part of the care. He's gonna break all all the hearts out. It's going to be well. I had the idea to go care by character which is sort of how the book goes you get joe chapter amid chapter to talk about both of the book itself and then what we're expecting from the movie and i think it makes the most sense to start with joe who's going to be played by sir sharon in the upcoming movie and join as you pointed out she's kind of the central figure she seems the most clearly based on louise may alcott the way that she is coded as a tomboy is really interesting to read now in this time of year more l._g._b._t._q. Representation you kind of wonder about who joe might be the if she were born in two thousand nineteen join a you said you related the mortgage over deke. You said your sister was the joe..

"Depressive episode isn't always fun to watch. You know what I mean a lot of times. It's you anchor to your bed. It's you just falling down crime because that's all your body can seem to do which Florence Pew I think is really good at showing the physicality of grief even as the film for guests that that's what her characters dealing with which was a big problem to me you do not bring up such heavy themes like familial mental illness like that and such an act of violence and kind of treat it as just like this flighty backstory and then just kind kind of get lost in swept up in the drug trippiness hang out -ness of the film it feels like the vibe it's going for in some parts really conflicts with the heaviness of the themes and ideas it picks up but doesn't seem to know what to do breath so would you say in a sense then just to set the stage a little bit for those who haven't seen the film in the prologue Danny's sister she gets a concerning email from her sister and she does mention her boyfriend that she's been diagnosed. As bipolar sold you say that's exploited and exploitative use of that sort of experience then I I hesitate to go that far but I do think that such an act is basically a heavy spice for such as STU. You know what I'm just it over ways it and it kept kind of <unk> bugging me like it was something stuck in the back of my mouth like between my teeth and I kept like gnawing at it and especially because I feel it forgets about her grief forgets about some of the most interesting things that are going on with her and I think Eh Florence Pews performance remembers it you see it in her body but the movie itself does not seem to care about these issues really is more to setting it up and like it likes to set up ideas but doesn't seem to really kind of get into the gristle of them is how I sort of felt it. There's a lot going on there in a like a lot of this different arguments. I'm going to try to remember them and sort of look at them. One by one as far as the prologue is concerned I loved the prologue not because of how it deals with like bipolar polar issues or even because of how it deals with grief but because of how neatly it sets up the triangle between Florence his character and Jack Rayner's character as Christian her boyfriend and Christians friends I feel like and this is where are we may differ most Josh because I read your review and I got the impression that you feel that Christian is like a fickle wishy washy you know Mutt of a human being but I really liked that setup and how it gives us a situation where Danny is experiencing experiencing something so huge and so profound and so on swallow -able nobody in her life can possibly be expected to deal with it. She can't deal with it and it's a great deal to put at the feet of someone who has already decided that he doesn't want to be in this relationship and he what's out and we before we even know what happened to her. We know he wants out. He doesn't want to abandon her. He cares about her his friends kind of hate her and want him to to dump her into experience danced like a fun twentysomething kind of.

"How he's been emotionally impacted from losing his whole family. And you you get the sense that he should be the one to go over the edge at the end or not at the end, but on Vermeer or whatever and for Natasha to do it. It just I feel like maybe they didn't quite lay the same narrative track there like you do get a couple scenes of her sort of hanging around vendors to you and talking about how this is affected her. But it just it didn't land with me in the same way. And you know, I appreciate the the sort of ridiculousness of the two of them like fighting to be the one to do it. And like the almost like the cliffhanger reference of of her falling through his his hand. Once they're over the edge of the cliff like visually. It's all well done. But just emotionally wasn't fully convinced. It sort of felt like contractual thing. Like, okay. This is a way for us to wipe. Scarlett Johansson off the table here and move on with her character and leave Renner around in case we wanna use him for something. But I don't know that that moment just didn't land for me. But I think this is probably one of the most surprising moments because everybody knows the black widow movie in pre production right now. So what do we think that's going to be like, I mean, she she dies here? And I think red skull basically says that you know, this is an ever lasting decision. But he also says there's a soul for soul. So there's some point that Steve Rogers is going to have to go to this point and actually come face to face with red skull, which is actually kind of an interesting situation that will never see in give back the stone. And when. It gives back the stone. Does he get a soul back? How does that work? I don't know the is not interested in that in any way. But I wish that I I don't know. It's long enough. I guess so. Over three hours. I mean, it's already pushing it. I'm not sure if they had time to get into that. But maybe they'll be able to explore that in some other property down the line. Jacob is black widow dead. Think. Black. Widow was dead for good. And I think my pet theory. This is pure speculation guys is that the Blackwood a movie will be a combination of prequel and sequel Wisconsin Henson returning in seem set before and game as tasha Romanoff and that the recently cast off Florence pew. We'll play the next generation of assassin spy black widow, maybe resolving something that that the tasha could not years earlier that is my pet theory because based purely on casting, and basically the fact that black widow seems pretty definitively dead. Here's a question we've introduced time travel into this universe it which is very dangerous. They they make it clear that I think there on the dock and they're having this conversation. You know, why can't I think Thorpe brings it up of like, you know, let's just go back in time. And save her. Why can't they do that? Now. Like, why can't they like we've seen famous pass Thanos was brought into our cur or two thousand twenty three and killed. So why can't you know pass? Black. Widow b be brought here from another dimension. As part of wonders since the Maura who is brought to dozen Twenty-three is not the same. Good more that Peter quill fell in love with Nichido doesn't have say memory. She hasn't gotten there yet other even rescuing the same person. I mean, guess maybe technically, but not their Natasha. So I now it'll be my guest bid the movies also nine tested in that to have a really hard could go. Thanks cues. It's tough..

You're like, oh, so she says this, and then it's like she's part of this. I got it. And so I wanna say take a moment here to say that do we owe Michael Shannon and apology because he absolutely is one of our best actors, but we again, I'm we're all culpable here. Right. Look just like for geopolitical conflict. We're culpable in this too. We have definitely only supported him in the sort of bug-eyed extreme weirdo. Roles that gained him some measure of fame the straight line from the movie bug that he was in to his role in poured wok empire to his role in the trashy superman movie. All that like, that's the version. Michael, Shannon that we as. American consumers seem comfortable. Thank god. They gave him a different thing to do. No wonder he took this part. And it's a much different. I think he's rendering of this. Character is different than what most people's imagination of Kurtz would ruin the boat at the book. Yeah. Put this mustache on him. Put glasses put that hair. Put that accent. I've heard some mixed reviews about his Israeli, actually, look I said this last week like you again, you're either you bought the ticket or you haven't. Yeah. It doesn't bother me anymore because he is a unique creation. If you start pulling that thread, the whole thing unravels wire all the Israelis only talking English to each other. Why are they why are the Germans and the Israelis talking to each other? I mean, why does any of that matter? Right. His performance is it's it's a very unique performance. It's of a very interesting character. And what I love most about it is the gusto not just of the way, he's embracing this part. But of the way this guy Kurtz interacts with the world. Yes. A world that has hurt him very deeply. Yeah. You know? But allow. Michael Shannon to play that exuberance to play that ferocity of action as a honestly earned consequence of what happened to him at the beginning of it's not a stereotypical a broken person trying to be fixed now at all thank God. And I appreciate that. And he's just a joy to watch so much of the shows about perception. I mean, it's not only about perception. In terms of how much are visceral reactions to the to what we're watching her being manipulated by the director. But it's also about perception of conflict, you know, two sides can think they're absolutely right. And the other second thing, they are absolutely wrong. And it's also about our perception of reality because it's about creating a fiction to impact non-fiction. You know, what I mean, it's about creating a piece of theater in the real world that will actually change the world office stage. Yeah. Is kind of what any artist dreams they're capable of? Yes. Even if they want Michael shaming and Kurt. Insists I'm like when he talks to his boss. He's like, you know, I'm an artist, you know, like curses an interesting character name as well. Obviously some intention behind the of course, and I just love the I love how the ark of his first two episodes kind of culminates in that in that Damon dynamo in the second episode where they break her essentially. And it's it's that's an interesting seem to watch because it's such a complicated. That's the most complicated part of this show. So far, there's there's this whole element where Florence pew. I mean, we could talk about probably for another hour, but we're England keep making brilliant actors like this..

"On that i will say with that end monologue that i looked at it on paper not too long after i saw the film and it was much shorter than i remembered it really from the film in luggage order and i think that that's partly due to stool barks deliberateness he's very deliberate he's very slow oh yeah the with the words ice pauses precise exactly it's not just that he's milking at its that he's very precise but he's also as a father choosing his words carefully that is it but i also think it's because of the insight and the power that the words for me any way contained there's actually not much on the page and yet it hits with such a force that same very little become saying so much and again i don't really disagree with you in terms of this movie being in some ways and embrace of hedonism that certainly comes through in that final monologue but i guess it was enough for me josh just feeling like i was being treated to the pleasures in a way that the characters were to just i was young the film just by watching it and seeing how they were relishing life and relishing their environment and their time together that was enough to so those pleasures are a huge part of it but there was also an acknowledgement of some pain to and shallow may if you have heard anything about this film you know about the end monologue you've probably heard a little bit of conversation about it and you've probably heard about the end shunned and i don't want to get into that too much either but similar to what i said about florence pew from lady macbeth nothing is really happening we are watching a character for an extended period of time not say anything or a sensibly do anything just be on screen and there is in a second of it that is an amazingly compelling you see the ark of that scene of that character it's its own minidrama without shallow may ever resorting to any actor lee tricks and i can think of you know a few movies have used this technique to close michael clayton for example if it and i thought i'd as sort of a of a challenge that is given to actors i don't know if i've seen it given to an actor this.
