"P. Today's top news traffic and weather, the WTO producers desk, his wired by IBW local 26, where electrical contractors come to grow. Good afternoon, I'm Hilary Howard, Alicia abelson is our producer. The Supreme Court has decided title 42 will remain in place for now. The vote was 5 four. The pandemic our policy allows officials to expel asylum seekers on the grounds of preventing the spread of COVID-19. It was said to expire last week but 19 GOP led states appealed to the higher court. The high court will here arguments in this case next year. In other news, long lines mountains of bags droopy eyed and disgusted passengers. That's the scene at some airports across the country, including here at BWI Marshall. And the biggest reason isn't the weather at this point, it's Southwest Airlines, which is to blame for about 70% of the nearly 5000 canceled flights today. If you or your loved ones are or were stranded, CBS travel editor Peter Greenberg says you have rights. The passenger Bill of rights is currently constructed by the DOT, says that you do have rights if the problem was caused with a situation that was under the control of the airline. It's a pretty safe argument that this is a problem under the control of Southwest and there should be, and I'm expecting some consequences here. The airline flight attendants union blames its employers for poor IT and processes that just don't work. Now originally, holiday flight cancellations were the work of weather that slammed much of the country, including buffalo, New York. The city is still being held hostage by snow covered roads and buildings after more than 50 inches fell. Stayed in local police are out on patrol trying to enforce a travel ban after so many motorists got stuck. Mayor Byron Today with the most Southwest airline flights canceled. Southwest Warren's delays and flights could continue for days. Keep it here on WTO for more on these stories. It's four 48. Traffic and weather on the 8s to Dave dill dine. There is some heavy traffic out there you might have been hoping for smooth moving traffic between the holidays, not so on the beltway, although there are no major incidents reported, very slow on both loops between the clan and Bethesda, heavy on the Italy through Silver Spring and college park. Interloop traffic is very slow though from landover toward Andrews as well. 50 eastbound slow traffic near sandy point to get onto the bay bridge, heavy westbound traffic. This afternoon, approaching the bay bridge and also near I 97, I 95 southbound slow and stretches through Howard county, Baltimore, Washington Parkway, slow both ways toward the beltway. In Virginia on I 66, westbound delays will start to ease through cedarville. The car fire, west of exit 52, route 29, cleared all express and main lanes are open. Nothing left to look at. Eastbound rubbernecking will subside. On I 95 volume delays will take time to ease. Persistent volume delays between newington and thornburg, slowest southbound through Stafford county, but much lower than your average rush hour, especially through garrisonville, the express lanes are crowded at the south end and route one is absorbing quite a bit of bailout in woodbridge, medieval road at Kate and hill road for a crash under investigation in McLean, a crash on route 7 westbound at lewinsville road blocking the right side in the district jammed outbound on the Sousa bridge. "Phone and then you bring your headphones under Google TV and they're just there through your Google account. All the stuff that Apple users get, they're trying to bring as much as they can to Android users. Yeah, I think the question is, you have to conceive of Android is not Samsung's Android. Right. Samsung has got a bunch of this stuff already in the Samsung world. Yeah. So are they going to be able to push it out to Samsung phones and then to Windows or is this you have a pixel in one model of a ASUS laptop? Yeah, that's an excellent question. I asked and they said that a lot of this stuff is going to require like a point update to the OS that could push it out through Google mobile services. So at least there's that. But what do you think the launch states are? Coming months. Oh boy. There's a couple coming weeks. And there's one second half of the year, I think. Early days, tutor. Yeah. Remember, I mean, Google's like the all time leader and vaporware announcements. So I won't ding them too hard. I'm going to order from a restaurant later with Google Assistant via AI. It's going to happen. It's definitely going to happen. They announced Dolby surround audio for YouTube TV on devices. But that's Google's shipping cadence has since Google has existed been like, I don't know, whenever. Yeah. And so it's actually fun. Events like CS, I think, difficult for Google. Because they have to line up. They have to walk around the kindergarten that is Google engineering and get them all together. Look, I think the stuff is great. The integrations are great. I just think fundamentally, they've got to get it onto the phones people have to make the case that the integration is valuable. Because in the Apple ecosystem, the integration is the reason you buy all the stuff. Yeah. The thing that I don't understand is why they haven't figured out how to get this to work with chrome. And I'm talking nearby share in particular. The fact that there's not a decent AirDrop alternative for Android users is wild to me. Yeah. Just write a helper app for Windows. That might be what they're doing, but they're just shipping it on HP devices first. That's hilarious. New one plus ten pro specs. So they announced Chinese availability and then they teased a picture and then they've announced specs and we're just like, they're just like, there's like 5 announcements for this phone. I still don't know what it's going to cost us to come to the U.S. at least as of this recording. They could tweet it out right now and I wouldn't be surprised. It looks good. The concern here is can one plus recover from the garbage 2021 it had with oxygen OS and just like they've had all sorts of problems. And they've definitely lost the fans, right? They like the shyness completely off of them now that they're basically integrated with oppo and they've always been there, but now they're running oxygen and they were supposed to be in the OS and it's very, very messy. And there's very little trust for them right now. Yeah. And honestly, their opportunity was this last year because Samsung had so many problems delivering. And they missed the window. Speaking of Samsung, new S 21 FE, and then there were some leaks today. The S 22. Yeah, which it should be very soon. But I don't know what's going on the same style. So the S 21 FE is it's like a low cost S 21 with like, I don't know, slightly worse cameras maybe, but like same processor, slightly worse build quality. It's a phone that should not exist if you're like if you pay attention to the phone that you buy. It's like more expensive than last times SE. So it's like, it makes sense for Samsung because they can make more profit off it, I guess, but it makes zero sense for a consumer. Go buy an S 21. Use or refurb or on discount. If the thing gets discounted to the wazoo, then maybe. But it's also weird that we know the S 22 is right on the corner. They could have just called the send the S 22 FE in order to find honestly. The S 22 of these leaks look, I don't know. The design is all over the place now. Every single one looks different. The ultra is like separating itself out because the ultra is going to have an onboard stylus we're expecting. So it has a complete. It's basically a note. Yeah. And it has the worst looking camera bumps ever. Is it a bump or is it the whole thing just thicker? It's hard to tell in this world. There's a little bit of a bump of metal around the camera lenses. So it's sort of like, I don't know iPhone 6 style bump. You know what I mean? They're probably gonna do the thing where they take the picture just a certain angle to make you think there's camera bumps there, but they're actually. So, I don't know. I actually love the S 21 design language and the way that the rail like merged into the camera bump. I thought that looked great. It seems like they're doing something similar ish with the regular S 22, but I don't know. We'll see. I don't want to completely prejudge it. I want to see it in person, but in photos, it just looks dopey. Yeah. We'll see. And we got to end with phones. It's CS. We gotta do some 5G news that's the law. So the iron loss CS is 5G type news. I'll just point to Russell's explainer. AT&T and Verizon are still not lit up their mid band 5G spec, which they spent billions of dollars on fairness because the FCC and the FA are fighting and the now that the airline flight attendants union is in the mix because there's some worries that radar radar altimeters and planes will be affected by mid band 5G usage in the mitigation strategies. It's a mess. It's a mess. CEOs of AT&T and Verizon are writing fiery letters to mayor Pete, you know? It's very good. But it's a mess and I think it's funny, like after all this time, we still don't have the 5G networks. We have lost the race, my Friends. Yeah. Well lost. In this particular bureaucratic infighting, we were talking about it for a few weeks on the show. It's very strange how things are lining up. You don't usually see the FCC like pull rank. You know? The Democrats and the Republicans we actually see are all just like shocked and horrified. Yeah. They're like, this is what we do. Frequency stuff. Verizon cancel an event or delayed an event. It'll come later. They did announce that it's coming in a couple of weeks. I think they're calling their mid C band stuff ultra wideband or something. They're like giving it the same brand new that they give to the millimeter wave stuff. So that's gonna be exciting and confusing. I might not have exactly, but there's definitely some confusion there with the way they're branding it. They also revamped all of their plans. So there's get more do more something something. It's truly limited now with a common limit anymore. It's a lot. But theoretically, you can get an unlimited plan without a data cap from Verizon. Peter, this is so stressful. It's affecting my creativity. Eli, I bet you that in order to sign up for you probably need to sign up for their new affiliate super cookie thing that they do or they track you more about. I'm a 100% certain. I bet it's called track more is what they should call it. Every time a carrier changes its pricing schemes, it's to get you sign up for something done. That's my theory. Okay. We're going to take a break. We're going to come back and do some. Literally, we haven't listed here as what better way to end your CS experience. The risk will be right back..

"Help us make sense of all of it if you are just joining as though as a screamer at the top President Biden on the road in Kentucky he's been there of course surveying the devastation left by the string of tornadoes and spoke to reporters as he was walking around looking at this as he's willing to delay his social spending agenda To allow for a vote on a voting rights bill that's if Democrats think they can do it So a lot has changed in the last 12 hours in the last hour for that matter As we rejoin with the panel Bloomberg politics contributors Jeannie chanso and Rick Davis Interesting conversation about the airline hearings today I know both of you guys fly a lot You actually have a good sense of the way this has gone over the past year We heard not only from the CEOs and I'd like to get your sense of this but also from the aforementioned Sarah Nelson who heads the flight attendants union and they're all begging for some cooperation here This has been a tough a tough ride for this industry Rick Davis when you hear about this $50 billion going out in what was this payroll program here to essentially keep the industry afloat all of these CEOs American Delta Southwest United all agreed that it saved the airline industry from ruin Is this an example of government doing the right thing to help private industry Yeah it may well be a very important moment because unlike others that were hard hit by COVID the restaurant business the hotel business The airline business is a strategic and important asset to keep flying in America Without which I think our economy would unlikely recover as quickly So and there are many other uses of the airline industry to get supplies back and forth and so including vaccine The idea of letting them sort of cut them loose I think would have been a really detrimental impact Probably a good use of taxpayer dollars Would you agree with that Genie I know you're no stranger to the airline business but a lot of these lawmakers were wondering why then did we still get cancellations You heard Dan Katz they're asking why weren't staffing levels at the levels they should have been Yeah And I have to say you know it's like so many people I was personally impacted by that I know a lot of people were it's been a really difficult over the last year for people who have had to fly or have chosen to fly And I think that part of what we're seeing when we look at the airline industry is really sort of reflective of what we're seeing in a lot of industries And you were talking to Dan about this You know they had a lot of people who work for the industry decide things weren't going to get better in the next year to three So why not take that early buyout That leads to a shortage of employees and that makes it very very difficult for the airline like other industries to pivot when demand increases as it did following the vaccinations And so in that way I think it's something that once in a century pandemic a lot of industries really are challenged to try to respond to an address I agree the spending is critically important You can't let the airline industry in the United States go under certainly but also I think there have to be tough questions asked and lessons learned about what could have been done better in the industry and at government quite frankly to adjust to some of these challenges Men as the matter of what can still be done better and as we heard from the head of the flight attendants union Sarah Nelson the issue is air rage So you've got a situation where flight attendants don't always want to come back to work or certainly volunteer for extra hours because in many cases they're not safe They're not secure in the air that the number of incidents is staggering when you consider the saron Nelson who is the head of the union talked about it today in the hearings that it's not just what's happening on the plains She's begging the TSA to secure the gates to secure the airports We do need more enforcement in the airports because we are not seeing that happen and it is unclear who is responsible for that at TSA and how consistently that is happening We need to ban to go alcohol This is a major issue And the alcohol is being pushed on passengers now today more so as we are in the pandemic than before This started with to go alcohol because of pandemic serving procedures and they determined that this was a money maker and they are pushing it now in the airports And that is unacceptable because it is at the expense of our safety All of this has to do with COVID to go alcohol thing My God Rick you see this happen your board a plane and a lot of travelers likely not business travelers are drunk before they get on the fighting with the masks and all this stuff is what follows Is this simply a matter of government enforcing rules already on the books or do we need new ones You know I think I don't know enough about what the rules are governing this new to go alcohol which really does just like smack of a bad idea and we're now seeing the effects of it And I guess a lot of it is just enforcement You know after 9 11 I thought every single plane had an air marshal on it My little goal was to actually ID the air Monday flight I was on You know because we.

Irena sendler passed away on may twelfth. Two thousand and eight. She was ninety. Eight years old unbelievable. Never heard of before. I feel like her name sounds familiar but i didn't. I've never heard a story before. Unsung heroes you guys. Let's go find them. Yeah wow amazing yeah nice thank you thank you right. What she got for me. Well i have a very strange story for you. Marty art in are you in. I'm so in. I read this article. That and i i learned about this person a couple months ago. I think it was probably back in april and it was so mind blowing that i was like mind-blowing. It's kind of a survival story. It's just weird. And i thought this'll be a fun kind of like interesting way to get back in you know so i just wanted to. I wanted to know this story myself. And then once i was learning it i was like all right. This is a this is a great kind of a kickoff Back from vacation first day of school. You know the first day school. You don't immediately get in there. Start writing a report. On abraham lincoln. Crack your books and you gotta do a little painting. you gotta do. A little Maybe make an ashtray out of clay roll out into snakes. Yeah you know start slow. So and the other way this ties in is of course on social media and everywhere we keep seeing. These horrifying stories of what traveling is like Especially on airlines during the pandemic And we're probably all getting used to it because it's like we're we're now getting very it's a really bad. Horrifying behavior is getting normalized. All of us were were just kind of watching it now. Yeah and we should remember that there are people especially on these stories about people losing their shit on airplanes there aren't their staffs of like flight attendants and people that work on those air airlines have to deal with those people every day because not every story is a they got duct tape to their seat because they were so out of control all those very common now but people are just aggressive rude strangely angry a lot of people dealing with with deep seated issues and they don't know how they're not getting help so they're just taking a flight to the point where southwest just made a public like wrote a letter of public apology to their own staff because things are getting so bad in like in in air travel and Apparently but but of course these companies are excited because air travel's picking up right and it is a slow down so much during the quarantine that they thought they were going to add a whole bunch of flights for the holiday You know this upcoming holiday season and both the flight attendants union and the highlights union got together and said we will strike. If you add these extra flights because it's already out of control in the airlie fucking hanging on right now. Yeah you can't add more and you see we can't act like this is an okay wave which i love. "Of the lack of principles in this debate. By corrado and chuck todd and others who just completely flipped the argument depending on whose office why because interim principals if you have principals doesn't matter who's in office if you believe. The government spending is out of control and government debt is is not a net positive. Then it doesn't matter if trump bush obama or biden spend money. We don't have it's always going to be perceived as a bad thing makes sense right but when you don't have principles and you're like chuck todd now there's and you gotta lick your finger to see where the political direction going. You're taking orders. Female liberal masters like giraldo then. The lack of principles gets exposed. And what happens. I wrote the stags anyone. I don't usually do that advice. Shows usually out of my head. I just take a couple of bullet points. But here's where we are right now. This lack of principles breeds hypocrisy. Hypocrisy breeds this. Trust is trust breeds anger and anger breeds division. We have this division in this country right now significant division. It's always been a bit right now. It's at a point where it's undeniable. There are really two americas right now. We have that because you have one side us. We have a set of inviolable principle. We believe in economic freedom for conservatives and liberals we don't want liberals to pay more tax pay us. We want everyone to pay tax money because it's inefficient. Give it to the government. We believe in healthcare freedom again for everyone. We believe in school choice for everyone. God given rights for everyone. We have a set of inviolable principles. The left doesn't have that the left and they're they're special interest groups don't have. They changed their principles. Based which makes them no principles at all based on what they perceive but the proceed political victory. Now come away from it. Here's a perfect example. I saw this infuriating story at the epoch. Times this morning by steve miller at real clear investigations as well the flight attendants and teachers unions. Say hey masks for the but no vaccine mandates for we talk about the lack of principles we backed your rights to the flight attendants and the teachers we did we back your rights because they matter right to put medicine in your body or not. You're right to go out without a mask on your face because they can't produce any evidence it stopped this pandemic all. We're asking for you to have some principals to and stand against these mandates. We're all gonna fall together from the epoch times piece. here's the flight attendants union. Flight Attendants Speak out About Unruly Passengers

"Passengers to long delays. Getting passports. ABC s Alex Stone looks the trouble. With the travel industry. Yeah, you know, Flight crusades is totally out of control right now, Kitty that in the last week there have been 150 new reports to the FAA of unruly passengers most ever in a one week period. Most of them involve people refusing to wear a mask on board and This woman on a Delta flight, saying she wouldn't wear one as police came on Brazil. I think my semen right not respecting her human rights, she said. And this woman on a Southwest flight they landed in San Diego a couple weeks back, knocking out of flight attendants tooth gonna brawl on board there. So most of the battles have been over masks and the EPA, saying it's gotten over 3400 unruly passenger reports this year. 2600 of those have been passengers refusing to wear masks and flight attendants today are saying they've had enough. This is a federal mandate, whether you agree with it or not, and whether they agree with it or not. It's got to be in force, and they say, give them a break. This is way higher than any number of incidents that we've ever seen that Sarah Nelson, head of the flight attendants union, they're going to the FAA today and saying help us out here. What else can you do? Because it's not getting any better. Flight attendants are experiencing a job that they just are not familiar with. It all every day. When they go to work, there's conflict, and there are is disrespect towards them and an incredibly difficult job. The NSA is restarting self defense courses for flight attendants to teach them how to to fight back. It can mean big fines. People are being fined 52,000 bucks up to it. For fighting back against flight attendants. You can get 20 years in prison.

They understand in other words the power of language and that's why they try to control language. They know that words have consequences. This is scary in the face of it. Our first priority in aviation safety is aviation safety and security is to keep any problems on the ground. Some of the people who traveled on our plans yet planes yesterday participated in the insurrection at the capitol. Today they're violent and seditious actions at the capitol today. Create further concern about their departure from the dc area acts against our democracy. Our government and the freedom claims americans must disqualify these individuals from the freedom of flight. "Flight attendants, the largest flight attendant union. In our country that represents United flight attendants among other airlines, which is called the Association of Flight Attendants. Um Stated that they've seen a little over 1000 flight attendants across the country across the industry. Excuse me contract. Koven 19. That's less than 1% of the roughly 120,000 flight attendants that were employed at the end of last year. It's a good sign Yeah, I think you're in a In a sealed up tube. 152 100 people. Eight hours a day. Maybe that that says something about wearing masks, and they don't mention any deaths. So right air travel as you might expect is at his story glows. Even though US airlines have and we've talked about this that other times they put in all sorts of changes. Mandatory masks. Some have the Plexi glass barriers. Touchless kiosks, high tech aircraft cleaning. But a lot of the people that follow this industry and this is kind of scary when you think about it. That they say it will not return to pre pandemic levels. So before March of this year, the airline industry will not return to those levels until 2024 So I'll do the math. That's what is that three years from now? Yeah, a little over three years from now. Like I said, there's going to be a bailout coming. And I'm sure they're counting on that ball's has to be melon. American And United Airlines Announce Layoffs As Federal Payroll Support Runs Out

"Big layoffs today at two of the nation's biggest airlines, American and United are notifying 32,000 employees that they are being furloughed as federal payrolls support runs out. Congress in the White House appear to be inching closer to an agreement on another massive pandemic relief package. But as NPR's David Shaper reports, the airlines say they needed it yesterday. Airline passenger traffic is down close to 70%. Since the start of the pandemic, and with fewer people flying airlines are hemorrhaging tens of millions of dollars a day. The cares act gave them $25 billion in direct payroll support. Allowing them to pay employees through September 30th. That was yesterday. Today People are devastated. Sarah Nelson heads the Association of Flight Attendants, the largest flight attendants union. They're looking at not having a pay check to pay rent. They're looking at not having healthcare. In some cases, we've got to Aviation workers who are both on the furlough list to live in the same home spouses or partners and kids who count on them. Both United and Americans say they'll recall workers if Congress provides more relief money soon. Other airlines, including Delta and Southwest say they had enough employees take early retirement or incentives to leave. So they won't need to furlough workers right now, but they could in a couple of months,

We've been telling Congress for months that this would happen, But now we're here. The problem is that this is just today. There's no backstop now because thes requirements of the airlines for no layoffs are gone. And so as we continue with only 15% of the revenue from a year ago Is all due to Corona virus and the impact of that there are likely other layoffs coming and we're just the tip of the spear because for every aviation job we support one and 14 jobs in this country, So this is going to start a real tsunami of job loss and it's It's just It's devastating.
