The 19-year evolution of a retail florist with Kelly Marie Thompson of Chicago-based Fleur Inc.
"I open to flourish in two thousand and two. So that means we're just about to approach our nineteen th anniversary so we're really excited about that It won't be a normal celebration obviously but We're still really excited Yeah i opened. You know back then. I was twenty two years old fresh out of college and studied history. And i had worked in a grocery store So that's where. I really learned my background on floral. And you know. I learned just things like how to pronounce l. strom area or burnham you but i didn't have a huge training or background on. It came to design outside of my art history degree and painting degree. That's just be influencing you all the time just that discipline just cover different medium. Now i do exactly and it's It's really shaped my understanding for color and depth and texture. And i've i bring that with me every every single design Yes i opened up I had a small storefront. I really thought we were going to be a bucket flower shop on because you know boutique florist. Were really thing that long ago at least not in chicago. There were a few but it wasn't as popular of business as it has certainly grown into. No i and i do want to ask you. What do you mean by boutique because Would you know that's a term that means probably a lot different you know definition than what it is today so yeah. That's a great great question. So when i when. I came up with the idea of opening our retail boutique. I knew i wanted us all bucket flowers sort of just hand ties. Ready to go But i definitely wanted to include. Heavy selection of gifts lifestyle goods Even back you know eight nineteen years ago. I always knew that it wasn't just about flowers for me. It was always about bringing people together and gatherings and parties so as we've grown throughout the years our collections have grown and our offerings have grown. And when i'm when i'm purchasing for our retail. I always have in the back of my mind. Like how can this assist in a gathering. How can this assist in communicating and being a part of. You know the other person that i'm inviting into my life. You know Every day so it's it's really You know obviously weddings and special events or celebrations. That bring people together but are boutique is equally as important for that experience as well. So in your product mix you have a more lifestyle items that you think kind of support your flowers and vice versa. Exactly yeah lots of serving pieces for dinner parties A couple of years ago brought in fine jewelry so we now sell engagement rings which is really special part of the process. Wow oh my gosh. That's a that's an endeavor was a scary thing. It was a goal for a very long time of mine. But it's always been a dream to have somebody start their entire process of getting engaged in having flair as part of that story All the way through the last dance when we're able to help service their floral to for their wedding. Oh my goodness so. Are you in the same retail space when you first opened nineteen years ago or have you found expanded on. Come out front. Yeah we've moved twice actually Our first location the building had sold so we had to shift out. That was after. I believe three years and then we moved. We were in our second location for ten And then the landlord actually had just kind of decided they were going to move into a different direction. And honestly at that time. I really thought about closing. It was not my decision to move and there was not a lot of Opportunity in the neighborhood that we were in that i saw that was the right fit for us so i had to make a really big decision of kind of go bigger. Go home If we wanted to continue our retail and special events. And i'm really glad that i kept going with it i. It came very close to say goodbye and to the retail side thing. Oh yeah i was really just. I had a big heart to heart and I drove up to michigan for the night. I'm not too far from us in chicago and drink a little too much wine one night and wrote down all the pros and cons idea. I woke up the next morning. Just ready to go just ready to sign the new lease. I'm so we've actually. We started out with eighteen hundred square feet and we now are between both are retail and our studio. We are thirty three hundred square feet. They're kind of adjacent to each other. Exactly what is it in chicago. The logan square neighborhood on and we've always been in that neighborhood. I was really drawn. I lived in the time when we opened and i was always drawn to it because events cultural diversity and very strong artistic community that both of those still

"Health centers and picking up a brochure for a family and domestic violence service. That's fraught with danger. Because you might know somebody. That's in that room. And i wanted to be able to give people an option that was safe. They could access when they were safe when they felt like it That was That that was on the internet. What would have made a difference to you when you were leaving your marriage that service that you wanted that wasn't they what. What did you want that. You couldn't access. Not even so much. What i was looking for because i i was like i said i was lucky. Luckier had savings. I probably didn't need anything other than some counseling. And you know. Everyone knows each other's 'cause if they're parked out the front of a counseling service for any particular length of time. Now people sort of dried pasta. Oh i kinda. Silence is having some counseling. So that could thing about a small community the support in the end the familiarity that can be real double edged sword when when a situation is not good and you want to leave a situation it can be but it also can be very supportive as well so Yeah it is a. It is an absolute double edged sword in small towns. What other particularly issues face. People who are experiencing family violence in outback areas of small towns. That maybe people in the city not. It's not the same kind of issue. I think the oscillation for one. You know whether it's geographical or whether to to be able to get into town to access services or whether the person that's using violences oscillated the person from their families and their friends so oscillation is a big one. You know as far as way. Oh have guns enact toolkit now that that sounds strange but the fact of the matter is is wade. Guns sign wise. What we need a pair of Fencing striding clause australia's or a hammer or a drill. I orange impressive. Because we have animals and if we need to humanely put down a shape or a cow we need the guns there so i the easily accessible so reflecting on You know your own experience and what you were hearing from women when you traveled around on tours with your fiction. "Learn in P E, they don't have to fly. By Harry, choosing heart applies to fly. I totally hear you that the question of like, what counts as a sport is highly politicized thing that maybe I fallen into. I think I'm defensive of athleticism as an idea of something. That's like really bodily may DEA of the tribes are tournament is maybe like closer to like a model UN where you like have to use your faculties. You're like smart says a wizard to come up with the right spells to attack this puzzle in front of you. Yeah. But it has a real physical component of like, swimming or fighting or running or flying in running through a maze. Right. Like all sports have a real mental component to them of strategy and having to think about the best plays. And like the best football players have books in books of plays memorized that they can respond to when they're called out by codename. You know, the just because there's a real mental component to it. Doesn't mean that it's. Not a sport. I think that being athletically fit really helps. Yes. I think I think that's maybe one of the reasons that floor is an successful in the try was tournament is that maybe her conception of what being a good wizard, or which is isn't one that needs to be as physical as it turns out to be in this competition. That's what I'm resisting is the idea of a competition that the tests you, and whether you're the best witch or wizard like I don't know that I want that to be something that's athletic in principle. I want that to be something that maybe someone like her mind he would have succeeded at if she could have put her name in the goblet of fire. Yeah. It just it's sort of clearly doesn't reward that though. Right. Because the three guys who are all quidditch players at a pretty high level, obviously Crump and being the highest level win. Right. Like Fleur comes in last place. Like by all accounts, will maybe that's what I want to say. Maybe I want to say that the Tri wizard tournament turns out to be an athletic competition when it. Shouldn't. And that's why floor loses because she's not an athlete in the same way. That the boys are she's a a brilliant witch. And she loses because she isn't an athlete. I don't know if I'm comfortable saying that she's not an athlete. I agree with you that we prioritize athleticism way before we prioritize other things that I think are more important. I do love when the spelling bee is on ESPN that is a great move ESPN. And I do think that like that isn't a feat of athleticism, but that is a feat of endurance and trading. And like, I think you can make a real argument about the spelling bee and whether or not it's a sport. And I do like the idea also like messing with the line of what is a sport right on all levels. Like, I would like to like be curious as to whether football's a sport or gladatorial, endorsed abuse. Right. Like, I I'm not sure that I want to count football as a sport. And I'm not sure that I don't wanna count spelling bees as sport. But I think that within the world of children's sacrificing their youth to training to be the best Archer or the best figure skater or whatever it is right in which other things are not prioritized in our lives, except like the fact that they were able to maintain a certain body type is I think that in that imperfect world of athleticism floor experiences. The downside of that. Right. The downside of like a brute strength purity test, right? Like this is an old tournament. And so I agree with you. Maybe flirt, I hadn't thought of it like that that maybe flourish showing up as a new kind of fantastic witch in the competition is just so antiquated that it still counting the sort of like speed and like force where it shouldn't be. The other moment that now I'm curious what you think because I I think of it is like a really problematic moment, I wonder if flirt impart loses on the second task because what does it risk for her with her sister? Gabriela it's such higher risk than the other competitors Cedric has Chou who he's like light for a little while and like been on a date with. Yeah. Like, maybe a month or two. He's liked her. Right. Harry loves Ron, and he's like a brother, but he's not his brother, and then in his leg termite any of you like, it's a crush. That's all it is. And I don't love that. It's the woman who isn't able to save her sister. Would I wonder if the stakes just felt so and outlandishly high for her we know that Harry actually thinks that runs life is at risk, and we don't know what floor things and since she's the only one who doesn't get her sister. I'm wondering if it's because the stakes are so high for her. Her that she is unable to do it. She fails because she's attacked by the Grundy lows. But I just I know in the stakes are super high for me like I just panic and would let something stupid happen like getting attacked by the glows. Her strategy was just as good as the other players. We know that Cedric also uses the bubble head charm, which is her strategy going in. So I think you're right that something happens to her in the water versus in the strategy beforehand. And it's only when they get to the competition that they know who's been kidnapped. So I think it's very likely that she gets in the water and has it in her head that her little sister could die and something like the Grendel owes sabotages her mission. Isn't it? So interesting that floor and Cedric literally have the same strategy the two differences. Are that Cedric is a real athlete that we know about and maybe Florida's back home. Maybe she's not we don't know. But the real differences that Cedric is going after a girl he has a crush on and Flora's going after her sister what you're pointing to again, again is that the stakes are just so much higher for her. The stakes are higher for her because her sister is kidnapped and not some silly percent. She has a crush on. And the stakes are higher for her. Because she's the only woman in the competition and the stakes are higher for her. Because she's the only woman in the competition who's not acquitted player for some reason. Yeah, it seems like at every turn she has a lot more on her shoulders. I mean, I think Harry has a lot on his shoulders as well as the youngest competitor as someone who's potentially being setup to lose. Harry is a lot on his shoulders, except that Harry doesn't isn't in this as a competitor. Right. He's been thrust in this against his will ensue. The only thing he has to do with survive, and you know, like giving fourteen year old Harry credit like not embarrass himself. Right. Like that feels like a really important life or death thing when you're fourteen but flirt entered like flirt Kane from France to compete. She is here to compete. So there's like identity on the line

"A a double reverse backup tight end throw a pass the quarterback on fleur thin one in the super bowl it how do you make that call i i saw the place or developing like when i saw folds woke up to line i said out loud digger snap a straight to the running back so i thought it was gonna be like a wildcat thing where they give the ball a running back and he tries to burrow through and then as i as the rightback moves at i see a pitch and i see falls leaking out i started laughing like cackling because even if the played didn't work at that point i realized it was such an incredible troll move by peterson to say you try to play throwing your quarterback at it didn't work which is going to do it ed it's going to work on fourth one in the super in the super bowl yep i like with coaches go for unforced down i like when they do unconventional things i like when they're not conservative when they're you know they're the announces like all you got you got take the three points there can you gotta do that no just go for it especially when you're playing the patriots do it i love it again terrifying terrifying i was just that game probably took four or five years off by life so i'm glad the eagles one because those are four or five years that i will not get to watch the super bowl to see if they would win in those years instead lord here's the crazy thing is your did it with your backup quarterback so when carson went as healthy again your team could be better which just giants fan is depressing.

"Yet which is not the current mindset regardless off the business at your enemy they're definitely is one of the things nearly that you talk about and that is been a part of the i think the public conversation a lot more certainly didn't does focus on shorttermism new verses longterm like we all want to maximize for the short term and i wonder how much of that is being driven by the certain technology and social cycles these days i think it his fleur reuter arroyo this amazing bs couple years ago she was criticizing boundaries who talked about how much money they've raised her and she's like you should be talking about how much money your business makes you know what i mean like in some ways like it is impressive to raise a lot of money and it can bode well for a business but the whole purpose of the business is that it is prophet generating and sustainable then and so why are we celebrate in this thing that is inherently unsustainable at that's what immune were sort of holding up the wrong metrics leg instead of looking at the impact it you know the in the day all things that are successful are successful because of word of mouth you know because somebody said it was good and you should you should read it her watch it or they sought on your wall heard that you're they liked the shoes at euro wearing ina that's that's withing cell end so if you're not making something grade that is designed to capitalize on word of mouth you're making something that is inherently fragile nasa an ephemeral and at i think that so he which interesting when you think about word of mouth we pretty much always amelie thing about okay will that means online yes i don't know if this data still holds true.

"The super knows where to start and where to stop because of choose special snippets of dna one is called a promoter sits just upstream of the gene that is to be transcribed and another call determination sequence tells it to stop if you want to both complex circuits like the ones we're talking about the turning on and off of different genes must happen consistently but the most commonly used switch these are proteins the bind to specific genes and regulate their expressions called transcription factors they don't always work consistently especially a million cells correct but now researchers have done this with out transcription factors how are they able to make a gene circuit without those molecules the scientists switched over to scissor like enzymes that selectively cut out snippets of dna called dna recumbent uses these enzymes function by recognizing to target stretches of dna the act moral lessons bookends when recom beneath finds those bookends it cuts out any dna in between and stitches together the severed ends of the double he'll ex in this new experiment scientists added the seemed gene the causes cells to light up were fleur us that i mentioned earlier right in front of it was one of those termination sequences that should have told the super to stop they also added to snippets of dna above and below the termination sequence to signal that recumbent ace when the promoter upstream the gene was activated the are in a polymer polymers ran headfirst into the stops sequence it stopped reading the dna and it didn't produce that florescent protein but when scientists added a drug that switched on the recumbent it leaped into action spliced out the termination sequence and then the irony polymer ace could make the fluorescent protein lighting up the cell so the recover nays takes out a stop signal and the gene of interest is read off.
