Moderna seeks FDA authorization for 4th dose of COVID shot

"The evidence is mixed when it comes to a fourth covert nineteen vaccine does Jason Schwartz who's with the L. school of public health says the FDA must look at the long term strategy for coping nineteen when deciding on a potential second booster shot I think the question will be calm how well the FDA thinks the existing vaccine series prevent severe outcomes verses all infections and whether to continue to boost will be a strategy to use as we as we go forward and it's hard to say when a decision will be made on that second booster yeah it also watching it that the government is concerned about potential future waves potential future variants what's happening in Europe all Fizer has asked for a second booster for people over sixty five moderno has requested one for all adults I'm surely after

"The Fizer and AstraZeneca vaccines Is effective and indeed safe. Matthew Snake is an associate professor in pediatrics and Faxon ology at Oxford University and the lead investigator on this trial. Also the randomized trial. Where will be enrolling people and then at randomly allocating them to receive either the existing license schedules where they get the 1st and 2nd dose of the same vaccine. I'll show you where it's mixed up. They get one of covered vaccine for the first dose and another for the second dose. And altogether will be enrolling 820 participants aged 50 years and above who have not yet received any covert vaccines and just remind us the fire's air in the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine. I mean, they work in different ways, don't they? Do the files. One is based on her empire in a vaccine so ejects the genetic code are in a and then the protein is made from that. Where is the Oxford AstraZeneca Vaccine uses viral vector, So it uses a benign virus couldn't adenovirus has almost transported to get the genetic material. Fully spike protein into the cells, said both of them ultimately, a directing immune response against the spike protein, But they're delivering that in different ways, And that's what makes this really interesting. We're looking to see if it generates an immune response is that he says good as the license should you There's a possibility it might even be better than the lesson schedule. Why would that be, though? Why might it be better? You give the viral vectors using benign virus couldn't adenovirus They also contain the code for the spy protein from the coronavirus. What you want is an immune response against see Spike Protein. But if you give repeated doses off that adenovirus, then sometimes the immune response starts to be directed at the adenovirus the transporter if you like, rather than prime, the protein itself. So That way. That's one example of how using a combination can actually be a good thing. Because then it gives the body multiple looks at the spy protein being delivered by different methods and that can actually help generate a bore a broader immune response. On. I suppose the big question in people's minds listening is especially those volunteers that take, but I mean, is this safe? Well, we're living it. Safety. I mean, firstly is his first thing to say is that These vaccines have now approved for use in this pandemic, and they've been given to millions of people already. They're many examples previously off vaccines that have been used in mixed schedules like this, including one of the license, a bowl of accents, So it's a lot of precedent for this. It's not something a radical new idea. It is, however, the first time that irony and very effective vaccines have been used together, and that's interesting and important. We're launching safety really carefully. All the participants will be completing a diary cards for the month after immunization to record any reactions, and we follow them up for a year to record if there's any more major problems. Um, but actually, our anticipation is that these will be things should work well and would be well tolerated. The point about this really is. It just gives health officials around the world flexibility in how they vaccinate people, given the fluctuations in supplies that fair That's right. That's the main driver here is to look to see both of the national or even at a local level. If you've had the first dose of one vaccine and you turn up, and the effect seems not available on that day. Can you have the other vaccine instead? Sometimes people very rarely have had an allergic reaction to the first vaccine, so could they receive the alternative vaccine? Then also at a national level. If there are any problems with supply at the nationally or regionally, do we have the flexibility to change up the immunization schedules? That was Professor Matthew Snake of Oxford University? You're listening to news hour. From the BBC..

"Begin today's program with the race to development and deliver a corona virus vaccine Joining us now to walk us through what to expect. Next. We have Bloomberg Health reporter Robert Lang. Griff. Bob, Good to talk to you. One of the big things were watching for the coming week Is Moderna Tell us First of all how the Madonna vaccine Differs from the Fizer beyond Tec vaccine. Yeah, so these that these vaccines are very similar vaccines that both based on technology called Messenger RNA, this technology essentially when Justin is the body turned your own cells at the time of vaccine producing factories. And the reason there's this technology is able to produce vaccines so fast is because, unlike traditional vaccine making technology, you don't need any live cells or any live that viruses to produce The vaccine in factories it goes much faster has led to these two vaccines in record time for five years. The first one it had a big hearing and getting Well last week. You know the dose of that are, you know, severely limited. So we need more than one vaccine and the Duris kind of the second one up slightly behind Fizer. And what's gonna happen on Thursday is gonna be evaluated by After an advisory panel that's gonna be a public vetting designed to increase confidence in the vaccine. The Madonna vaccine. How soon could we see that available to the public so assuming that everything goes well at this FDA advisory committee meeting on Thursday and there's no reason to think it wouldn't give him the high roughly 95% efficacy has been reported so far without any, you know, we all We are serious. Long term safety problems could really get the emergency clearance any time after this advisory panel and like the next day or a few days after that, So yes, in all likelihood, you know this Madona vaccine with definitely likely be out there. You know, this year before Christmas, I would think What about this storage challenges for Madonna and the Visor of vaccines? Are Are they similar or different? "Hi, Nance. Hey. Carol Fizer is out with more results, and it's ongoing Corona virus Vaccine study that suggests Shots or 95% effective. The real challenge now is to convince the public it's safe. Can we communicate effectively to the general population when it is that they should show up for vaccination and have them respond? There are a lot of skeptical people out there. So the effectiveness and the safety of the vaccine will have to be clearly communicated. While the country waits for a vaccine, the FDA has given a green light to the first covert 19 testing kit to be used in the home. Syria HEALTH All in one test kit is expected to cost around $50. "A drugmaker reports they've developed an effective Corona virus vaccine. But Donna says early trials show its vaccine is 94 a half percent effective. Last week, Fizer announced that its vaccine is 90% effective comes as the White House has delayed the presidential transition, preventing President elect Joe Biden's team from getting ready to distribute the vaccine. But Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and In fact These diseases tells w t o p the transition should not slow down the rollout of the vaccine right now. This information is being presented to the FDA who will evaluate it. For the purpose of determining whether or not we can get an emergency was authorization. I have every reason to believe that they will do that and they will do that expeditiously, so that is not going to get slow down. I think people need to appreciate that. We are moving full speed ahead with evaluating the data, which is very, very promising. And two moving ahead to getting vaccines into people as quickly as possible that will not slow down. Both Madonna and Fizer planned to have tens of millions of doses of their vaccine's ready by the end of the year and many more ready next year. President elect Joe Biden says his transition team is focusing on a vaccine distribution plan. But he says the refusal of the Trump administration to cooperate with his transition team is causing a hang up. The vaccine is important. Little news into your vaccinated. So how do we get the vaccine? How do we get over 300 Million Americans vaccinated. What's the game thing? They say they have this warp speed program that not only dealt with getting vaccines, but also how how distribute this If we have to wait until January, 20th to start that planning. "You a different perspective. On the day's news, The CEO of drugmaker Fizer Albert Birla says that his company will know if their vaccine works by the end ofthe October, he told face the nation on CBS that they are expanding their testing on more vulnerable populations. Now it is our featured audio clip this hour in our Monday morning rap off the Sunday morning talk shows. Now we feel quite comfortable with the safety off for the product, so we want to expand. So if this next phase of testing is successful, he says they could be ready to go by the end of October. Wow. Yeah. But then there's Dr Fauci, who came out over the weekend and said, You know, we could be deep into 2021 before we even see a real vaccine. "Because one player a Marcus Fizer changes the course of that program for the next rate will I mean one two or three years. I mean that changes the course of the school the coaching the other players. I mean, I just I can. And then you've got the institutions the Nikes the Adidas of the world they're involved in it. I mean, I can't imagine what is truly going on behind the scenes, we probably don't even know court. You know, the half of it. It's it's it's it's really it's really a point where I I don't wanna say some money pot. But you know, they say money makes the world around, and you know, a lot of people focus on it. And and for me, it's it's something that I understand been a part of, you know, been extremely blessed. You know with the celery that I've made, but it's just you know, that's not what drives me and my family. I actually have a twenty one year old son. That's landed division to school right now Christmas who heard though Pacific that he's playing there right now. And but I have a fourteen year old eighth grader who was my son. My my Julia Marcus FIS junior that you know, here in Las Vegas as a as a kid, you know, growing up he's getting a lot of recognition that he's going to be a senior. He's going to be a freshman high school next here, and we have at least four or five schools like in the air. That calls Texas every and my wife like man, this is really getting to the point. Whereas like he's going to high school. There's not even college yet. And you know, as he has pro potential all over everywhere. I mean either at the same age I was nowhere close nowhere close. But, but it it's getting to the point where it's like, you know, we're just trying to focus on him being the best through maybe can be. And while we're sitting trying to find the best school to send until we I'm I'm one of the coaches of the club team that we have is the Las Vegas punishers that he played on. And you know, we have a group eighth graders as one of the high school next year and all of the schools that are recruiting, you know, our players want him to stay together and everything or they something different. This is this Adidas school was this nineteen school this unarmed who, you know, trying to get that group together, you know, to to create a better chance of you know, when in the state, Jim sh. In the next four years. And you know, it just gets to the point where I man if we're going through this as parents, you know, Ogden only imagine with some of the kids born through, you know, their ranking Domeisen six seven eighth graders. Right. He's pulling out what the breaking do for kids, they go. But they're they're hit by two. And now, they're more overly pressured to do this and do that instead of just focused on being the best to doubt that they can be right. Yeah. It's like you said, it's a it's a big big business right now. And then any of these kids have pressure on all angles..

"But he he missed enlist two of the three, and you know, that would have been a big turning point of the game. If he was able to convert all three, you know, but like you say the pressure so high, you know, it's not like getting college. You say you're not get paid anything like that. So it's not like, well, okay. If I make it, you know, then this fine. If I miss it as fine because you know, I still got everything, you know, kids don't have nothing to play for but for that pride into win. You know, there's nothing really to fall back on, you know, 'cause, you know, one more in base out will miss out could be you know, the continuation or the end of the seasonal end of career. And you know, some guys don't have the opportunity to advance onto be frozen. So that's a big moment for them. And to be in that situation. You just you know, for me, I had to I the block out a lot of a lot of outside things over going on and as a forty minute. Now, I said, I think and I tried to recant honestly, a lot of the times a lot of the moments are not can't. And then and my wife say, you know, what was going on. And I just really cannot remember because I had to be, you know, so focused in my tunnel vision had to be so focused in that, you know, it could have been so much stuff going on the outside on outside that you know, I had no crew 'cause I was just being oblivious to what was going on just to. I I wasn't that player that can hang out and do this or do that. And even as, you know, twenty one year old adult being able to say, you know, drink alcoholic beverages and stuff like that. I I wasn't that type of player. My my greatness had to come with being totally focused now some plants can do that. I wanna I wasn't one of those guys I had to be focused on what has been focused on a lot of things were sacrificed. But you know, alternately I mean, that's how we read to declare that. I was yes, you had to almost like just go out of balance everything and say you're completely committed to your craft to what you're doing. And you and you said you you had to give up some things you had to give up going to the parties and give up drinking and hanging out and doing all the stuff you had to be so locked in. It sounds like when you're doing it. You're so locked into a point that looking back on it. It's hard to be like what was going on in that moment. It's because you were just so dialed in at that time of having a career that you had leading your team. And just it's it's gotta be. It's probably hard to explain to someone who wasn't in those moments, right? It is it is. And you know, like you said you're not in that moment of your on the sand. It you know, we all fans, I sit and watch other sports. And I think about you know, man that looked so easy or hard. Yeah. But you never know until you know, I I love I love the game of baseball Hughes Red Sox fan, and you know, I I see those those guys up there, you know, and home are good now, I wanna hit home runs, and I'm strong, and I and so I went to the White Sox training academy. Oncein when I was with the bulls. And I think they had like the fastball set like sixty five dollars power menopause blowing Bobby so fast. You know, come on now. And you know, I take I take ten eleven swings. And man, the hook oblique and everything just on fire us like, you know, here. I am as a as a pro athlete pretty much in my early years or problem, my basketball as an athlete and spite man, this is strenuous. So you never know, you know, what's going on. And how much it takes to be a pro athlete or athletes different sports until you try it, and you know, people from outside looking in. You know, makes it seem so easy..
