"Five twenty from NPR news this is All Things Considered I'm Marty Cornish and the Mary Louise Kelley should restaurants and stores be allowed to reject cash as a form of payment Washington DC thinks maybe not the city is considering a ban on cashless businesses similar brands have already been passed in several parts of the country and here's a Lena cellucor ports it's a rare case of governments getting ahead of a tech trends before it spreads after almost ten minutes of standing in line at a coffee shop Richie Taurus realized something I only have cash in my pocket and this coffee shop no longer accepted cash only cards are mobile payments which he didn't have on them it was a humiliating experience and I remember wondering aloud how could a business refused to accept cash which is legal tender when you open a dollar bill it reads this note is legal tender Taurus is a city council member in New York he says his constituents have also complained about a spurt of cashless stores especially seniors he wrote a bill to ban businesses from rejecting cash last month the New York City Council passed it almost unanimously joining Philadelphia San Francisco and the state of New Jersey a similar ban is up for hearing in Washington DC next week here's tazer Mitchell with the research and advocacy group DC fiscal policy institute I catches the Connie is not an inclusive economy because whenever you exclude people from being able to use cash at business says essentially discriminating against people who are low income people who are homeless also undocumented getting a credit or debit card is not easy for everyone you have to have an ID often a utility or another bill and money to deposit to financial history Mitchell says in DC nearly a third of residents rely on cash every day because they don't have a card or even a bank account the federal reserve has found the use of cash is declining two years ago for the first time it found cash it stopped being the no number one payment choice but it's still the most common way that people pay smaller amounts under ten or twenty five dollars that's particularly true for people over fifty five and under twenty five whatever your reasons you as.

"Five twenty from NPR news this is All Things Considered I'm Audie Cornish and I'm very that was Kelly for a moment during the state of the union address last night president trump spoke about an issue that reaches beyond party lines I'm calling for bipartisan legislation that achieves the goal of dramatically lowering prescription drug prices get a bill on my desk and I will sign it into law immediately at that point Democrats in the gallery stood up held out three fingers and chanted HR three the name of the drug pricing build the house passed in December here to talk us through that moment and a few others in the speech is NPR health policy reporter Selena Simmons definitely there Selena hi Mary Louise give me some context to start with about I am not trying to work on is on drug pricing legislation well this is kind of stalled on drug pricing legislation right now the bipartisan legislation that trump mentioned there was is from senators Grassley in white and it's actually quite similar to HR three except for one key thing HR three allows Medicare to direct fleet negotiate on drug prices and president trump used to talk about how it's crazy that we don't engage negotiate currently that is illegal for Medicare to negotiate he has not been saying that recently Republicans generally say that idea is a non starter so that chanting during the speech was like a dare to the president you want to be aggressive on drug prices support HR three any chance here's gonna Sportage rotary on the certainly now and the question is now whether Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell allows a vote on that bipartisan bill from the senators and he's been resistant on that so we'll have to see if president trump prevails another health care issue those that voters care about that came up last night is coverage for pre existing conditions let's listen to that part speech I've also made an ironclad pledge to American families we will always protect patients with pre existing conditions an iron clad pledge their the significance of that pledge in that language well he kind of needs to make a pledge because the trump administration is currently arguing in federal court in the Texas V. A.'s our case that the affordable Care Act you should be struck down as unconstitutional and the four double character of course is the law that protects people with pre existing conditions so McConnell has made a similar promise that trump made to during his speech last night don't worry we'll protect this you know very popular provision of the affordable Care Act yeah but they haven't come up with a plan or legislation that shows how they would do that so they're aware that this is popular and that voters might be worried about the protection going away if Obama care does get struck down one other thing Selena for let you go up a bit of a swipe that the president took last night he mentions socialism which I think people heard is a not so veiled reference to Medicare for all the legislation champion by Bernie Sanders among among others this gonna be a central campaign theme for president trump yeah it seems like it it wasn't the first time he mentioned that it's worth pointing out that Medicare for all is not a socialist system like the U. K. has where there are government run hospitals and government employed doctors it is a government run health plan so there would still be private doctors private hospitals but socialism is an old old American attack line against universal insurance Truman wanted that and obviously it had an impact we don't have a single payer health system today so that criticism worked then and trump wants to see if it'll work now and your health policy reporter Salinas and stuff and thank you thanks Sesame Street is taking on one of the world's biggest crises the plight of Syrian refugee children the Muppets are reaching out to millions of displaced children in a new program refugee children face special issues losing their homes missing time from school and frequent moves a grapple with emotions and fears they barely understand NPR's Deborah Amos reports from the route all the Syrian refugees at this soccer practice are part of the target audience for offline sim sim welcome sesame a new show on Arab TV stations and online also for refugee kids in Jordan in Iraq and Syria some here are old enough to remember the war many more were born as refugees raised by parents who fled violence and devastating loss and can pass on the trauma it shows up in behavior problems and studies show trauma can even stand a child's brain development definitely these kids I have experience.

"Fifty five twenty three they had a list of two thousand suspects in having the name narrowed it down to five and from that five there was only one that floated to the top because his profile was pretty much what the three docks society and the F. B. I. had sad to look for so they managed to get a DNA sample from and process it and the detective told me that the group was in like a boring staff meeting at four thirty on a Friday night something like that and everybody you know wanted to go home and then they got a call from the DNA lab saying Hey can we come over and talk to you and they said okay sure you know everybody is just real tired and hung up and everybody was laughing and saying Hey I bet you they gonna come and tell us they solve the canal murders right you know and everybody's laughing instead now they probably won over time you know and then they walked in the DNA people said that was Sam you got him and the whole room just exploded you know he said some detectors were crying some detectives were sitting there with their mouths open staring into space it's a very good way to end of Friday for law enforcement who worked so hard all the time on cases like this cold cases than day to day that is doctor Colleen Fitzpatrick who helped identify a suspect in the Phoenix canal murders and he's still yet to go to trial you mentioned doctor Fitzpatrick right that is correct and it's a death penalty case so they're really doing very careful you know preparations are which is fair trial you know you have to do that is so many though if you anyone who follows true crime on reddit's or any of these there are so many web sleuths and of the other websites I'm not sure I health rusty just any of them are you know but there is a cult following for so many of these cases and the the prevailing thought these days Colleen is everything is being solved Golden State killer the sort of waiting for zodiac there's one called the buckskin girl out of Ohio that people had followed for some time and you recently saw that with DNA right well yes we did now we have to differentiate the John and Jane does from the suspect cases so the buckskin girl got the Golden State killer and the Sony hack will be solved by you know people that handle suspect cases that would be identifying yours for example if we were involved but of course Golden State kill was barber rain her group which gets high marks for that the buckskin girl was it a total which is one of the first game does John does that we did to the dean I don't project we only do John and Jane does and that one was amazing because that girl was killed in nineteen eighty one nobody has really any idea who she was they had a lot of ideas who she was not what would happen is we got the blood sample from doubts Murray the name.

"Five twenty three is the season to be jolly that sometimes this time of year triggers a lot of depression because of the stress and things we've lost a lot of it's especially difficult because there's an expectation that that we should be everything to everybody people compare their emotions to what they assume others are experiencing or what they're supposed to feel and then they feel they fall short Dr Gregory chances here to talk this through all these things he is a doctor Gregory chance dot com and chances spelled J. a and T. E. he is the facilitator of the center a place of hope and an author is well and we were talking about getting through the holidays doctor but when we talk about trying to like is there a point during this time we should give ourselves time to grieve and to say it's okay that I feel this way yeah I think the biggest thing you can do is say okay this is my reality this is well how I'm feeling when we deny those emotions we probably will then X. Cape and then do some behavior we may regret like over eat drink eccentric so be careful about self medicating to change my mood we tried a mood elevating do certain things so here's the thing be honest to say okay I know this is a strong this is a tough time and deal with that but then I also want you to find at least two or three people who are extremely positive influence for you who also will speak the truth don't go this alone this is where we want to really lock arms with friends or a loved one or a mentor don't do it alone I love that you said that because I was going to ask you for people who are isolating and they just can't cope and just can't even pick up a phone to take one step out of the house or even get up off the couch because we've had those days so many what is one step we can do I guess you say reaching out to someone how how do we invigorate ourselves and prompt ourselves to do that when we really are feeling just so so down yes okay one of the things you may discover you may have some after think alike I feel like I don't even care I don't care and and so that's maybe a warning sign one of the first things I want you to do is I'd like to see you create some movement I know we don't feel like a lot of times it gets darker earlier but keep physical activity up and when you feel that happens to you you feel that depression and you feel like I'm gonna turn towards food I would say I'm gonna commit to fifteen minutes to whatever it is walking I'm gonna set my timer but I couldn't delay whatever negative behavior I'm thinking about doing I'm going to let my fifteen minutes if so why well about half the time you decide not to do that behavior yeah I want you to turn I want you to drink water have that bottle water I want you to also just pies and do physical movement for fifteen minutes it's a diversion but also that movement does something to you and you start to think a little differently edifying in many ways sure you also point out that we can reach out to and against can be difficult if you reach out to others who might be lonely and you realize I'm not the only one this this happens to many people and even going out and and volunteering somewhere around the holidays and of course many volunteers of soup kitchens and shelters all year round but sometimes the holidays it really prompts us to say you know what maybe I should do this all your all your main this could be I could change my life by changing some others we just did that as as a family and one of the things that we looked at was we we we did a little bit of shopping and I gave each family member has a certain amount of cash okay and they had twenty twenty minutes we did we did twenty dollars and twenty minutes and we wouldn't do that and it was to buy a gift for somebody else that we could go and then share this in need whether it's and so we actually dropped off of the items we purchased as a start to our holiday season our Christmas season we start off by giving to others verses thinking about ourselves in a beautiful beautiful thought doctor thank you for sharing that the other topic we were going to hit on before we we let you go that one in three adults already is feeling that holiday burn out holy cow doctor how how come I love it we were feeling burned out already turned out well for me go back to that expectation it may also go back to that sense of obligation about spending I feel burned out in I may not be doing good self care I may already be kind of stressed out and now the holidays if it now I gotta think about I have to spend money I have to and then now you adding layers layers of stress so this back to me about that self care about how we got to engage in taking care of ourselves I haven't mentioned yet but leaves a big part of that self care this time of year so allow the rest we have to give ourselves that otherwise we're just not going to be any good for ourselves or the people around us and we want to blast well here's the thing I used to work in sleep research and I can tell you well you know we've got certain sleep stages we have to go through when we don't do that on a regular basis there are a motional ramifications so sleep does a lot for us in an emotional sense we just talk this week about a new study that's out saying that if you don't get proper rescue are three times more likely to be distracted and really mess things up so it's just a great word for you doctor and for many Americans at like thirty five percent of the two thousand adults surveyed here agree they are burned out I'm from anything holiday related sixty percent found the period stretching from thanksgiving to Christmas to be so stressful and so these are really great tips from you it's early December we should maybe just take a day off from trying to please other people perhaps Hey let's just make that decision now let's not be a people pleaser let's not be codependent and let's do this year a little differently the average American whatever that is tends to gain from about Halloween through the end of the year seven eight pounds seven eight pounds joking it's just calls all over the place everywhere you go there's a holiday make a decision this year when others are gaining I'm not gonna be gained and maybe I'm not losing but I'm going to move into the new year feeling good that I did not over indulge in this family walks and all the things you're doing Hey doc and before I let you go also tell us about your book healing depression for life this is a time that we can really feel a lot of that depression and we really believe that there's hope for depression in the last thirty six years we packed our experiences into the healing depression from life believing that there is hope it's always a missing piece of the puzzle well you can find out more doctor Gregory chance dot com and IDT booksellers everywhere Dr I hope you have a great holiday season will be back here before Christmas.

"Five twenty three we are the biggest entrepreneur platform on the planet welcome back to business rockstars were we are continuing our conversation with the president a rose garden consulting now before break we were chatting about how you almost have to think about it as a back yard barbecue with the crazy uncle right because a lot of that is relationship building right so is that how we should be thinking about it as like alternately people buy from people writes about person ability that like you know and trust is really crucial right yeah absolutely so it so if someone doesn't like that I mean so and and they need to trust you because if they think you're lying then why would they buy from you and and so so so I think that that but that's where I am that's not where I want to end up with that because I think everyone just kind of leave that that's going a little bit deeper than that yes you have to like knowing trust you but I think that the typical cop out answer that a lot of people out for themselves as to why they're not a closing deals is on building a relationship and a lot of the business owners that I work with they have sales people that book if especially the founder is not a sales person or or self proclaimed I don't know anything about sales I'm a tech guy around this whatever the higher sales person that hasn't sold ending in six months as one building a relationship on building relationships it's all relationships some of the biggest yes I've ever heard right there there's a lot of people that I walk right in and to sell a six figure contract and I don't know them from a hole in the ground but it's if you if you can properly effectively communicate that is building the relationship so when people try and talk about it from a perspective that they are are are mutually exclusive right you have to first build a relationship and then you can sell maybe maybe in some situations but every single situation that you're running into you have to build a relationship first and and so on you're you're you're you're you're not doing your job yeah as a self and so I think I think that a lot of the relationship building happens as you're trying to sell them and remember when I say cell communicating writing and communicate effectively that is building the relationship it needs to have a particular trajectory you don't have that trajectory than spinning in circles doing nothing and I'm sure it's different based on what the product or services that you're selling so how do you find that sweet spot for your company for a when is it too early to go in for the style I think you have the I think you have a couple of minutes I think you have to identify your your your buyer profile right you have to understand cool you're targeting and what their imminent need is right and if so if I'm selling I don't know nuclear power plants right and I come to you tonight so you nuclear power plant you're gonna say well that sounds great but I don't really your when I step on the relationship with you and hope that you know now that'll never change your needs alright so so so I think that I think you have to know who it is that you're such a number one and then from there that will pretty much crossed out kind of what the next steps are and and if you don't have that process to find you you you're not benchmarking anything you don't know where you're going and so so so that's kind of why we all have a compass right so we know where north is that we can we can go from there if you don't have that that then you don't have anything and I think that the I think I think from there that's really what defines it ever as you know sales cycles vary but some people have a short sale cycle some people have a longer cell cycle I mean it it depends what else on insurance there was no be backs right either sold right there and then or or there was nothing because the type of insurance I was on but some other financial planners they they they do build that relationship and it takes you know six months a year to close the deal so so there is no one size fits all answer but I think it really boils down to understanding what your buying what sure buyers buying journey is and what your cell cycle looks like and if you deviate from there that's when you need to take a step back and say okay I'm not headed in the right trajectory let's talk about follow up because obviously it's just the first time you engage with the person especially if it's you know I'm the email or social media that's not going to be enough how important is follow up and what is the best way to follow up so incredibly important the but as I think the saying goes that the fortune is in the follow up right I am by no just a minute ago I bench that I walked in and close the deal a big deal that's almost and that almost never happens in normally yeah exactly so if that's all you're relying on a buying an apple so I you know it's one of those things where where you you don't have to follow up the the to the follow up definitely is letting your let letting your your prospects or clients no we are going to follow so when you are done talking I'm gonna tell you Hey I'm reach out to you and you can just set a specific time which is probably pretty hard unless you give me a Hey you know what it is not our budget or something and I can't I can't shake you then then it's then it's one of those okay well you know what let me let me touch base with you and and and a few weeks or two months or whatever setting that expectation letting you know I'm going to follow up and then asking for the confirmation that that that that's alright with you right but meeting them into that and then so when you tell me yeah follow up with me in three weeks when I follow up with you I have a higher likelihood that you're going to respond because that's that's what ends up happening a lot of people just don't you right you try and follow up to try and follow up and you've been you turn into that yeah there's two sales person that's just want to check in once every every month then and now now you want your bag of that good luck and your son is so so so I think I think you know getting confirmation that it's okay but the number two don't don't just follow up with Hey just wanted to check in every now and again that's okay but if that's all your follow consists of you're probably not gonna close a lot of deals so to make it a reason for the follow up a lot of times it you know if I have written an article or something if if I just publicity or anything I do something I wrote just something that I saw if I'm on link then I see someone else article also is one of my guys that Kate read this article thought it would be very helpful read you know the second page third paragraph you know talk to X. Y. Z. challenges by the way how do you solve I'm re engaging right if you don't if you told me that your this was your problem and I'm sending you something some sort of a resource that's gonna help you and and let you know that I'm not just getting you up to trying to some cash from you everyone knows look I'm following up with you because I want money from you try to pretend and play that game I just want to help you out no one believes you and then and then it man yeah I mean like you you're you're but you're that relationship so that there's a certain level of transparency that needs to be in everyone's or something that money is the root of all evil mean that the money is what we do everything so let's let's not kid ourselves exactly so so if but if I can if I can actually be of some sort of assistance or some sort of a resource I want to throw around this word value all the time give them value I don't know what that means anymore just because everyone store around so much but from my perspective value means something that in my service in my product that I think is valuable that's the my lines that's not from your lines so you may or may not find that Bible so I need to stop looking I need to stop looking at it from a perspective of trying to give you value but more of when you open this when you're gonna thank what's in it for me why did all the send this to me is it just because they try to get money from me which definitely but if that's the only reason that I can see that you sent it to me robin I respond but if I if I see that okay well yeah you want to get my fiber that's number two number one he remembers that I had this challenge and he's actually offering to help me solve it was pretty cool let me read it and then now there's just some sort of indebtedness right now there's that reciprocity where they want at least reply you and say Hey thanks so much for son that's me I we haven't solved but now you've got that conversation I don't want kids that's a really good technique real quick you are co writing a book congratulations tell us what it's about so Erin Rosten and I Aaron Ross the the first but book critical revenue everyone seems to love it it's a fantastic book and so you know I've got cracked up recently and we were talking about about kind of how sales is changed since you wrote that awhile.
