"Tonight. I'm your host. The reverend captain kick ass joining me. I'm nikki and richie rich and it is sunday of course and i am a reverend. So if you like. You could consider this church. This is your sermon. This could be a chair if you want to consider it such. Yes if you are you know someone who values freedom liberty peaceful interactions with human beings. Voluntary interactions with other human beings. This could be considered your church. If you so choose. What a wonderful religion. It is pretty cool. I have to admit. I happened upon something today actually. It was last night. As i was leaving the studio and i actually had it from another source but they have a paywall so i pulled it from a different source because well screw those guys. This room l. pirated. Get it for free anyway. This from al jazeera dot com. China has tested a new space capability with hypersonic missile. So for those of you. Who don't know what those words put together. Me and basically china is experimenting with space missiles a missiles from space. Well i mean. I hear you and i get. If you're anti china you might be concerned not really anti-china but some people are right. China's going to take over the world kind of thing but if you're but if there's like new technology for scientific advancement and you know exploring space then maybe it's better than the current mechanism for getting people up there like there is if you look at it from a perspective of just the technology sure and what it is doing. It's kind of cool. Yeah what it can do but at the same time the. Us is saying that none of their intelligence agencies had any clue that china even possessed this possibility. Oh so out of nowhere. China's like hey guys check me out. You know for busy spying on us. Yeah good for china for pulling the wool over those is like that. That seems to be more of a a. Us intelligence problem or chinese or lack of intelligence right okay. China's got this new technology and we didn't know this because because we almost got the underwear bomber guys. I'm telling you because you're spies sunk. Apparently you know. I don't know. I don't know enough about what government does to keep tabs on other. And what their governments do to keep tabs on other governments etcetera and so on so and the good thing for china's they're like they're one of the superpowers so they don't even have to worry about us retaliate. I just maybe on some level. This is just a demo and now this is the newest product coming into. China could be all the governments. Get the catalog in the mail. That says weapons from china right. You start industry or the alibaba alibaba quarterly. Catalog comes out to the government store. Pretty soon it'll be a consumer level for three ninety nine just in time for christmas. China has tested a new space capability with a hypersonic missile. According to financial times the report on saturday cited multiple sources familiar with the test and said beijing launched the nuclear capable missile in august. The missiles circled the earth at low orbit before speeding towards its target according to the sources demonstrating an advanced space capability that caught. Us intelligence by surprise. Don't there are. There are too busy focusing on. Like william shatner going up on his little space flight. Yes surprise does like which is cooler. China testing a nuclear space missile. That circles the earth before. It's or captain kirk. You know actually visiting space. I mean if you're a nerd captain kirk. obviously yeah. Obviously you a three people briefed on the add on the intelligence or lack of intelligence told financial times. The missile missed. Its target by more than twenty miles. So while it's cool that can go round the earth and potentially drop nuke somewhere from a technology perspective. Apparently it needs to work on its accuracy. Well that's pretty far. Off sodas. joe biden. I mean as long as you're gonna be blown up brown kids and innocent people. You probably gotta work in your accuracy to throwing that out plus. It's the first test but you expect you expect them to nail it like pinpoint on crazy that it could circle the earth before it went towards its target. That's kinda creepy well. And that's the thing about this particular type of missile from what i've gleaned overnight so that means i've read this article and probably to other small words gavin small words simple audience here so from what i've gleaned that's the entire point of it is that they can launch these missiles up into space from wherever and then it can circle the earth for maybe more than once and then figure out where it's target is and then come out of space and hit it so like and i think this article go into it. So they said. The tests showed that china had made astounding progress on hypersonic weapons and was far more advanced than us. Officials realized the f. t. sources said the hypersonic glide vehicle was carried by long march rocket launches of which china usually announces. Though the aug test was kept under wraps. it was a surprise launch. Hey we didn't tell you about this one. Probably because of the they would have to justify it if it went poorly right like if it went poorly. You don't make the announcement. Hey we just launched a myspace. It circled the earth and only missed by twenty miles right. Like that's a positive. Oops then it looks like then then. Then they're on par with north korea. Who we're going to shoot in japan. And then like those one hundred off the cliff and plops into the ocean like you guys aren't doing anything. Us pentagram spokesman pentagon spokesman. John kirby said he would not comment on the specifics of the report but he added. We have made clear concerns about the military capabilities. China continues to pursue capabilities that only increased tensions in the region and beyond that is one reason why we hold. China is our number one pacing challenge Because you know they don't want competition. I still want to know if people are still going to call the. Us the largest military power in the world now because it seems like china's already has this ability china's just catching up. Okay why would you. Why would you think that well. What makes you think that we're smarter than they are. And this article tells us that. I'm not sure let's continue all right. We'll foreshadowing here. Let's let's go five whatever. Yeah it's fun. Along with china. The united states russia and at least five other countries are working on hypersonic technology. Whoa ho how does you know it's almost as if 'cause we're leaning overnight gleaning the gleaner. Yeah i'm gonna start a gleaming business. Y'all need some gleaning done little guy now gleaming dot com now you gotta registered man now. I don't hypersonic missiles like traditional ballistic missiles which can deliver nuclear weapons can fly at more than five times. The speed of sound sounds so you'll never hear it coming no you won't you'll hear it after it's already there..

"Just were mad. That apple gives photos from people's phones with when company when the police have search warrants for it let alone like so i just you create you really pit people against each other because it's not what the community actually wants and unfortunately that's the that's the government in china but like these people don't actually want this. Large majority of of people are gamers. That's a majority of the population now. And i just believe that a you can't hold the company responsible that's crazy. That's just not their job. That's your job. You made up this loft. I make a game that i sell to one hundred eighty five other countries and in your country. I have to implement some type of back end. Software there's gonna be hiccups. There's going to be bubbles and fifteen thousand five hundred dollar fine could have destroyed an indie studio. I mean who knows it could have been accompanied. That was trying to make their name and said screw it. Let's take this risk and see. See what happens because we need the money and and now that did so. I hope that's not the case. But just don't see the parameters of these curfews in the this rollout in general by the chinese government as being founded on anything like not only a curfew in the time you stop playing but there's a curfew in the length of time you can play so i'm home sick from school. I can only play one hour like me. One good reason nighttime like maybe. I can make that argument. Because i'm such big enforcer. Sleep and i would never suggest that there be a law in in the united states that forces of una bedtime for anybody. Because everybody's different but i can make the argument like yeah. Okay you see that big of a problem with kids not sleeping performing horribly in school you say listen. Internet shuts off in your neighborhood at eight o'clock fine. I'm with you there. "As the U. S and other Western countries discussed the rollout of covid vaccine boosters in Africa and other parts of the world, many millions are still waiting for the very first shot. Covid has killed 200,000 people across the African continent where there are nearly eight million confirmed cases, while South Africa is on track to have a majority vaccinated by the end of the year. Many other sub Saharan countries, fewer than 3% of their populations have been vaccinated. Earlier today, William Branham spoke with the head of Africa's C, D. C. Dr John on Kanye Song. Dr John and Kinga Song. Thank you so much for joining us. I wonder if you could briefly. Just give us a sense Continent wide. How is the pandemic going in Africa right now? Unfortunately, we are not within the war against this pandemic in Africa as we speak, at least 32 countries going through a very severe, Ted, we've And about four or five other countries. Actually witness in a foot wave. And the background of this is that we have bare limited vaccines that have been introduced and the continent a population of 1.2 billion people have always seen about 3% of the population fully vaccinated. Which is unfortunate if we imagine that, uh, good was to at least vaccinated up to 60% of our population by next year. So I think it is a very unfortunate situation we are witnessing in Africa. I would love to talk about the vaccines in just a moment before then, though, Is it your sense that the delta variant is the primary variant of the virus across Africa now? It is, uh, as we speak over something countries have now reported the data billion and Africa is the continent of 55 member states. So yeah, at least about 20 countries have not yet reported the data very in But the speed at which the Iberian is evolving suggests naturally that in the next couple of weeks or months, it will become the predominant variant. I know that testing is not as widespread across Africa as it is elsewhere. Do you share the concern that you might be possibly missing even more cases simply because you don't have good eyes on the ground. Are we absolutely missing cases? There's no doubt about that, because of lack of broad testing us. We would love to. And it's not because countries don't want to do testing, I think is lack of really access to last scared tested and we are most significant progress if you compared to where we were last year. Last year on Apple as a continent of 1.2 billion people. We are just tested on that 300,000 people said the But today we are we pass that back there. But testing has to be the cornerstone of the respond on the continent because if we did not test we did not find On this vaccination front, the global The Kovacs effort in many Western nations say that they are doing everything they possibly can to try to increase production and get vaccines elsewhere into the world. But it sounds like you clearly don't believe that effort is happening fast enough. Well, let's submitted. I mean, this period of covert and the principal were some and they were based on our need to cooperate and, um to express solidarity. The relatives that it has not translated into action with in Africa, where, as we speak, as I indicated area just on that 3% of our population of 1.2 billion people have investigated If you recall when this covert was set up, it was very clear that wanted to have a basket weave axes will be dumped into and the vaccines that effective will be accessible at the same time to everyone in the world who needed reduction. But that is not what we are seeing today. And certainly here in the United States and in other parts of Western Europe and in Israel. They're talking about introducing booster shots and giving booster shots, which could be hundreds of millions of third dose is going to wealthier nations while you all are still waiting for so many of your first doses. That is absolutely correct. My greatest concern with the concept of a booster is that I have not seen the science yet. That justified that, for example, there are at least a couple of conditions that all scenarios that evidence to do. It's a better word that I'm looking for. One is that we should be able to define that when vaccine protection actually wins to the point that somebody actually needs a booster. We haven't seen that level that data second is that even if the Ministry of that vaccine drops to a certain level in people that have received do you used to you get protection from disease or and hospitalization? If the answer is that is to get enough protection there, then you don't need urgently to get a booster. Certainly within the U. S. The Pfizer and Moderna, which are two the most commonly used vaccines here. The evidence, as you say, does seem to to indicate that we are still getting good protection from hospitalization and death with those two vaccines, which seems to reinforce the point that you're making that it is not that urgent. For Western nations to be giving boosters when you compare it to continents, entire continents like Africa that are waiting Absolutely. I think if we look at the United States and also, uh, look at Israel, I mean Israel was one of those countries that perhaps the first country that vaccinated at least 60 to 70% of his population. But the beauty of the situation in Israel is that even though most people that have received the vaccine were infected, they were not hospitalized, and they were not having severe illness there. So that is so the situation in Israel to deserve two things. One is that, uh, By vaccinating your entire population and neglecting other parts of the world from being vaccinated. You are not safe because it will breed new variants. And the variance will challenge even your own vaccines that you've received. I think that is one. Listen, Number two. Is that vaccines do of course. Um, but those vaccines protect from disease and but they do not protect from from from infection, So I think that is just very, very clearly. Messages that we should take. We're taking home there and that we truly don't know when, uh, if we need a second dues, and how soon we need that. Sorry the booster does and how soon we needed All right, Dr. John and Kinga Song, director of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Thank you so much for your time. And best of luck to you. Thank you. Thank you for having me on your program..

"If you're looking for an ultimate backup plan Having another citizenship is very valuable because even if you had nothing else as backup plan you know my courses funny The earlier caller reference. My course i give this example in my course About having something like a european union citizenship right ra- magin that you went completely broke and you're living united states. The job market in the united states completely implodes You know the dollar is a mass etcetera. Oh if you can get on an airplane and go from the united states to somewhere in the european union you have the ability to work there in the european union and you could potentially save your family by simply going getting a job as a busboy in a restaurant right to be able to put food on your children's mounts that right to work by being a citizen of another country is an exceedingly valuable thing and so the ability to know that for the rest of your husband's life potentially your life potentially if your children's lives they could have at least one other country in your husband's case. He already has one other but now he would have at least one other with portugal and what that means because the european union is potentially up to twenty six countries in the eu. I think now. So there's twenty five other countries that he could go and get a job in That's so so valuable. What about if the examples. I given my course right. What if you got sick. All and your husband was totally broken. You couldn't afford Health insurance and you're totally wrecked will having access to another country especially a country like portugal has public health system. that's potentially life-saving for you to be able to get medical treatment. What if you're you guys lose it all and you got these three children and you want them to go to college but you lose it all will. The fact is that you could go to portugal and enroll them and one of the government schools there and they could get a college degree or any other school in the european union without tuition money out of their pocket. so it's an exceedingly valuable option for them. it's just and i could go on for another twenty minutes about the benefits of it and so as a simple backup plan. Anybody who has the option to get any kind of of second citizenship by by inheritance or by heritage should definitely start that process. Going the only reasons you wouldn't do it as if it caused you a problem with your career. That's why i asked about medical things or potentially sometimes if the country that you're getting the citizenship from has some kind of significant restrictions so for example There are a very small number of countries that if you are a citizen to those countries you simply cannot be the citizen of another country. Countries like singapore right. And so if your mom was singaporean or his mom. His mom was singaporean and he was considering well. Should i really file for singapore citizenship. If this is an option will you can't be a dual citizen or his case triple citizen with the united states. Singapore's that could be. That could be a no go for him For that reason or sometimes a country might impose something like military service and so here country like israel is a big a big consideration. Right you have to think. Do we want our children to have israeli citizenship. knowing that that was subject them to Potentially military service and there are some other countries as well so But has none of those downsides right. there's no mandatory military service. Portugal has no problem with dual citizenship. And it has access to the european union and so having that access to the european union is is extraordinarily valuable Both from your ability to be a tourist both for your ability to travel You know the portuguese citizenship. If if coming up in five years your family as world schooling That the ability to travel on portuguese passports is much more neutral than traveling on either israeli or us american passports and so that can quite literally make you safer in some parts of the world than traveling on either the other Passports and so as i see it. The trip is irrelevant. The fact that you may or may not want to own property anywhere in portugal as irrelevant It's only a matter of the fact that having that second citizenship. Even if he never does get a passport or not doesn't matter just having that option is very very valuable. I had a friend of mine who was in a really difficult place. Because the democ and she'd have a lot of health problems etcetera and she was living in a poor country The country didn't have a lot of options she'd been divorced or just in a really rough place But she had a. She was an italian citizen and i persuaded her and convinced her. And i literally paid all the costs of supporting her to move her to europe and why because the country that she was living in had nothing like the economic clout of europe and i told her i said listen. You know. let's say that the cova economic crisis is bad. Like i think it's going to beat. This was a year ago. I said if the recession lasts for two years here where you're living. It's gonna last for fourteen months in europe If it lasts if if if the vaccines arrive in in three years here you're living. They're gonna arrive in eighteen months in europe. I said you the fact that you have. The ability as an italian citizen to move to europe means that you can access what at the time was was a better solution and it has turned out to be better for her better access to job market. And so if she didn't have that there was just no other options right. She couldn't go and apply for access. There was no other big country economy. She had no ability to go to the united states. Nobody to go to canada ability to go to to spain to it'll like without that she had no options but because she had an italian passport such a valuable. Backup plan So i'm impressing the point to impress upon you that this has no connection to where you might wanna travel or were you might want to invest. It's worth pursuing as a very very cheap long term insurance plan and you'll be grateful to start the process. Do it now and move it as fast as possible. Because the portuguese government may change those rules in the coming in the coming years That's what spain has done and is doing. And so do it now and go as aggressively as you can To start the process going and again even. If i didn't have the money i would borrow the money to make it stupor helpful. Thank you so much joshua. My pleasure i i. I'm gonna leave you a no doubt about what. My opinion is on that one parker in washington. Welcome to the show. How.

"How can you look into the eyes of those little Children and say I will abandon you? To a country in the future. That is not what you deserve. I will not pass the torch of freedom to you. How can you do that? As a person? The answer is because Hunter Biden can self his artwork with many zeros. At the end after the first significant digits, and Mr Biden certainly is getting money from China either directly or indirectly in Ukraine, and so on. That's Just follow the so it's all about money. In other words, you know, these people are just machines that run on money. But, you know, I mean, I've had my experiences in life not been perfect. I can assure you But I've done some good things I haven't done as many good things as I would like to do. But I have experienced this country and this country has given me a lot and it would be very, very hard for me. I mean, people may disagree with me, and they certainly have the right to do that on policies and issues. But I think you and others have a basic fundamental feeling about this nation. And there are just some things and some lines you don't cross over. And I, you know is Joe Biden just a greedy grifter on the American system Instead, all he is. And he's also working. I guess he has achieved that goal to put his name in the history books. He will always be in the list. The presidents of the United States very sad, even though he can't speak intelligently, and it's difficult for him to get out of paragraph. That that's what we're dealing with. I want to know from his supporters who say America is racist, that America's terrible Okay, that's interesting idea for discussion. But if America is so bad Certainly you could name five other countries that are better. Yeah. Good luck on that one. Okay, But tell me if you say America I don't mean you personally, the people who oppose us on the radical left. If you say America is so bad, so give us some examples. Countries we should emulate with Saudi Arabia. We should copy them. No racism in Japan, Russia such a great place to live France. Tell me what What model society? Can you identify? That's a good question. Of course, there are none. That's right. There are none and that that's the kind of question that's pointed. Or I would say to the point and nobody can. I mean, you know it may be a Bernie might say that Russia or Cuba are better. But of course parties nuts. Thank you, Tariq. All right, we'll take Luigi. Okay. Where is Luigi? He's way over here, Luigi. Good morning. Good morning. And how are you? I'm doing good. I'm a lot better now. I'm sorry. I was watching the parades for the first time in 16 years. Oh, my God. Anyhow, what was his delegates name again from Frederick. Dan Cox. Okay, Because I'm gonna look I want I want I would back them. I'm going to do I'm odd. Bradman Lot ton of votes. Go for Dan Cox for governor. That's right. You know, you go to his go to his website Go to his website Emails come out, like to work for his campaign. Yeah, I think he has. He has to. Uh, one is Cox for freedom dot com and I think the other one is Dan cox for governor dot com. Beautiful, beautiful. Sounds like the very man Yeah, He is a good man, and I know him and I encouraged him to run and I've talked with him quite a bit. But the thing about Dan is that he's a very brilliant guy, and he's very tough. He won't back off. But it's going to be interesting because He is a candidate that is very different from what we've had. I mean, we've had rhino Republicans like Larry, we've had slick Republicans and, of course, the Democrats, the eight candidates on the Democrat side or wild and crazy. Uh, but, uh, Dan Dan is different Ban is to the point. He knows the issues. He's articulate. He will not back off and I have a feeling I have a feeling. That he is going to emerge as someone who can win the governorship. I think she'll, too. From what I hear, Ben I'm going to get in touch with him for sure. Let me let me tell you what Biden Don't know. I'm going to answer that here. Here's what Biden is always like. He's been a liar. He's a cheap He's a thief. He's a racist and he's a trader. Now. What do you talk about at him? He's no damn good. Well, I think that if he could not answer my question, that's apparently what he is. And Maybe even worse to Oh, yeah, You're right. He couldn't answer that question is no damn good. He's never been a good person. All right. Thank you, Luigi. Alright, Thanks. Bye bye. All right, We're going to take a break. We'll be right back..

Hey amanda welcome to let him. Usa alumnia thank you for having me today. So amanda you've been following the protests that have been happening in the dominican republic since march and that's when women's rights activist set up an encampment in the capital in santo. Domingo more recently there was a national march where a lot of people in the protests. Were chanting something pretty particular. They were saying less. Today's cows silas which can basically be translated into the three grounds or the three circumstances. So that's a less three scou- sally's i mean it's like it's it doesn't roll right off of your tongue. I'm trying to think of ever used the word. Gauss silas anywhere in my life in spanish. And i'm like. I don't think i've ever used that word. So kisses to the last three days. Cow sally's yes. So the silence. Which was a word that i've personally gotten very used to saying because i've been in the middle of these protests They're basically three circumstances under which women would be allowed to have an abortion and these are considered sort of the basic circumstances right. So it's when there has been a case of rape or incest when the fetus non non-viable and when the health of the woman is at risk

"Or wikipedia. Wants me to say benin. But i will defer to the guest here. I'd like to welcome to the show. Rachel day cost from year of return. Book dot com. And who has come to talk to us about the country of been in rachel. Welcome to the show. Happy to be here first of all. We're probably gonna need to put this on a map because some people are wildly googling right now in wikipedia where is the country have been in innocent a west africa the biggest countries nearby our nigeria and ghana. And why did you find yourself in banana in the first place. Let's start with that. I did a dna test years ago. I am african canadian. Meaning my ancestors. Came here as enslaved africans. We don't know where from and i thought. Dna tests would be a good way to find out where my origins were from. After i did the dna tests been in was one of the top countries along with togo. Nigeria the whole region. Really and then. I took a trip there for six months and been in was one of the five countries. I visited excellent. And why should someone go to in. What i loved about. Being in was that it was authentic in terms of it hasn't yet been too americanized to westernize is still wear the traditional clothes. Drink their traditional tease ethan traditional food and it really felt like you were transported back to a time. They've kept their culture almost intact. And that's why you would want to go to benin versus another country that might be more westernized. There's something authentic inorganic about banana. That is so heartwarming. Banana is a small country. As i recall. It's actually a smaller country in africa. But it's the same size approximately the same size of ohio. Which always surprises

Even ones that don't seem to have much connection to cyber infrastructure. Here's puerto jacob bundy with more. This is really spotlighting. The fact that the digitization of the agriculture food supply chain is made companies like. Jbs more vulnerable to these sorts of taxes computer systems now handle grain processing for feed monitor conditions for livestock and poultry a measure productivity and plants and control processing systems in logistics and these systems affect not only production and transport of the meat itself but also the management of live poultry cattle and hogs. And so this really is a core risk that these companies face right now. The us says it will impose tariffs of twenty five percent on nearly two billion dollars worth of imports from the uk and five other countries. "Seventy thousand tons and is extremely powerful. I'm talking about china's high tech aircraft carrier the shandong which just became operational this week. The carriers conducting war games in the south china sea a disputed zone claimed by china's well as five other countries. Those patrick win says ommission has drawn furious reaction from officials in the region. So patrick. why is china. These aircraft carrier coming to the south china sea. Such a big deal. Marco aside from nuclear warheads. This aircraft carrier is china's most powerful weapon. And now it's making its official debut in some of the most disputed waters on earth. Which is the south. China sea parts of the sea are claimed by other countries. That are touching the see vietnam and the philippines are the main ones and now china's sending this giant floating fortress into those contested waters to say. This is mine. This is why china has been building aircraft carriers like this. It's actually the first one. That is one hundred percent designed by china. It's really impressive. And it sends a message to america as well because america has been sending its aircraft carriers to the south china sea to say no these waters do not just belong to china and now for the first time in history the us and china are both circulating aircraft carriers in that c. So that's why this is important. So how have neighboring countries reacted to this. Yeah officials in southeast asia are never happy to see china showing off its power in the because they know their navy's are relatively tiny compared to china's but as far as reactions go the foreign minister of the philippines teddy lacson he just kinda lost it on twitter saying quote china my friend. How politely can i put it. Let me see. Get the f out. Yes so called china and ugly oath. Yeah so does this mean china. The philippines are on the brink of some serious clash. It would sound like it was leading towards that but actually know the foreign minister teddy lacson. He had to apologize to china. Very promptly also got reprimanded by the president of the philippines rodrigue. Oh do tae who actually said through a spokesman hold on. I'm the only official in this cabinet. Who is allowed to curse so in other words it got buried very quickly and everybody could see where the real power lies. It's not on twitter. It's with military strength. It's risky to talk that way. China speaking of risky let me pick up on a point. You made a moment ago. Patrick this is the first time the. Us and china are circulating aircraft carriers in the same disputed zone. Our risky is that well. They try to time it such that. The aircraft carriers are not there at the same time. At least it looks like that's what they're going to do. America's was there semi recently. China moved its new aircraft carrier in when america was not in the area. So you just don't want them to be near each other at all but increasingly it looks like that's going to be inevitable you know. We keep seeing these ominous headlines about the south china sea china sewing. What seems to be some fairly aggressive votes. What is next for the south china sea and this powerful chinese aircraft carrier. Yeah well in the south china sea. You're going to increasingly see china. Deploy this aircraft carrier the shandong when the aircraft carrier isn't there there's this shadow naval militia these so-called chinese fishing boats that often have armed men on board the philippine government actually calls them militia directly hundreds of these boats have been swirling near philippine territory. Territory claimed by the philippines recently. And that's part of what upset the foreign ministers so much as for the shandong this aircraft carrier it has already taken a spin around the other. Big flash point in asia. Which is taiwan. That will keep happening to quote one chinese general. Our aircraft carriers are quote not homebodies and long distance. Voyages will become normal. The world's asia correspondent. Patrick win. thanks very much for explaining this. Thanks marco language is about more than just words embedded in language our traditions and cultures that go back thousands of years. This is something that a town in. Sweden is well aware of people. There are working to preserve an ancient language called l. Daily in here with that story is the world's bianca hillier the small town of l. Dolon offers the same idyllic scenery found throughout sweden. There's a river nearby and lush forests at every turn but the town's native tongue off daily in doesn't sound anything like the national language. The lexicon.

"Clear about something and this is important. Our purpose is not to contain china. Hold it back to keep it down. It is to uphold this rules. Based order that china is posing a challenge to anyone who poses order. We're going to stand up and defend it. That's the secretary of state. Tony blinken walden bello. I was wondering if you can weave this. We've been having this discussion about vaccines and the us really being seen in the eyes of the world right now as more of a danger to world especially when compared to russia and china russia and china getting out their own vaccines and facilitating others. The us not doing the same at this point. If you can link that to this also increased tension between china and the united states. Yes first of all. I think that a when people look you know what the trump administration did with respect to blocking be trips waiver and then contrast that to the way that china was shipping chinese vaccines assign farm to countries in the global south. Okay there was a big very big conquest. There you know in fact. This shipments donations being given now in the case of the philippines. For instance the sino back You know is the only vaccines until about two days ago. That were available for the general population Yes we had the astro sinica vaccine from You know for europe. You know that that had come in and seniors were vaccinated with it but the vast majority has been china back. That has come in. So i think in terms of the impact on the global south. There's been that concrete now when it comes to the philippines. This sort of donations of the chinese vaccine has however been suspiciously by a large part of the population as basically china's effort to buy off the government in terms of the sovereignty rights in the south china sea or what we call the west philippine sea because the deter administration has impact hardly protested. You know against the moves of china in the west philippine philippine sea or south china sea around aching over an infringing on maritime formations that lie within the exclusive economic zone of the philippines. And so we have the situation with the south china sea for by a number of countries here including the philippines in vietnam feel that they have been really disadvantaged by china's claiming that the whole south china sea are west. Pc belongs to it alone ninety percent of that whereas all these other five other countries bordering it. Now that's a basic injustice. Let me put it that way that you know really territorial aggrandizement the that's that's taking place however okay and the china be doing that however you really need to look at the within this broader regional context where china is surrounded by something like in the order of fifty five sixty. Us military basis coming down from japan to south korea to guam to the philippines where they have five basis over here. You've got to look at it in the context of the south china sea. In fact a you know basically v. Seven fleet of the united states has deployed itself and considers that a basic resume for its its ships. And so what we're seeing is that china's perspective or a posture has been that of strategic defense and even the pentagon admits that china's strategic posture is that of strategic defense where us the that of the united states is more of an offensive big rapid forward deployment. And the basically. What i wanted to say is this k- china's moves in the south china. The west philippine sea are not justified their illegal but at the same time they are made in terms of a strategic response. The us encirclement and heightened us military activity and and and lincoln. That's why we need to look at this lincoln statement. It's it's it's warmongering statement. I mean they came. Like don busters in the anchorage meeting about two months ago. Where ten ten seconds walden acted so arrogantly. Chinese you know so i guess. My point is this. What trump's anti-china policy is now also being followed by the the the administration's of be biden's administration's. We're going to have to leave it there but we'll continue to explore this issue. Thank you so much to walden. Bello acclaimed filipino scholar. I'm amy goodman..

"I've got to be honest. Companies tend to underestimate me. And i want to change that. I think that when companies talk about bring their products and services to my european and asian peers that's considered things like widows peers shop. What are the considerations before purchasing a product they brand loyal and who are the influences. That's great it's smart business and good marketing. But i'm not sure that. Those same considerations are automatically being made when companies talk about bringing their products to me in my job i advise companies and individuals that are looking at investing in or expanding their african footprint and the more conversations of head the more i realized that s still so many companies organizations and individuals. That's still completely misunderstand. Who i am not only as an african consumer but as a citizen of one of africa's fifty five countries south africa in case. You're wondering that's a real shame. Because these misconceptions will make it hard to win mice your wallet and obviously it's not just my wallet on the line but that of one point three billion potential customers. There's a lot of money to be made in africa. And i think if you're a company and you don't figure out how to get into africa now in the right way you might said you missed the window so let me help you. By deep banking some of these myths and misunderstandings around and its citizens. The first myth africans a cheap. Maybe it's because of continents legacy of poverty and feminine that makes people think that we just go for the cheapest product. They're still many companies. That think they can just push the cheapest product lines into africa

"five other countries" Discussed on CATS Roundtable

"John catch them fees here sunday morning. Well how is the economy going. How are we moving product around the world with us today. Fred hochberg a very successful businessperson. Who from two thousand eight. The two thousand seventeen service chairman and president of the export import bank. How you fred. I haven't seen you in a while. Well i think that's the problem. Is john no one gets to see anybody anymore. The old fashioned way is good but it's no no replacement for being in the same room with somebody and sharing a cup of coffee or glass of wine. I agree with you. So much We've had a change of administrations for the trump administration to the binding administration And you're an expert in training in in the world and begin your evaluation. How how things transitioning. Well i think we're in. We're you know we've seen particularly recently with the crisis in suez with the container ship. That gut sucked there for a number of days. It reminds everybody. Hell were so reliant on each other and one thing that's happened. During covert of course. Is that people that we've all got out as you've just discussed job to less movies less theater less concert. Let's sporting events so people consuming more goods at home and that means trade in goods. Everything from computers electronics has been skyrocketing and so we see how dependent we are on the rest of the world. That said i think that President biden of the team Secretary of commerce jeeter ramada. A keenly focused on making sure that also american workers and the american people not just american companies benefit in the in the economy that we're now in and i think there's a real focus on that to make sure the benefits are spread airlie understood this infrastructure plan is going to be key to that and to our prosperity now infrastructure. Plan i understand. I talked to governor rendell recently. He says that that infrastructure plans over the next eight years You think the mu- money to complete all the projects that we desire well oil's a big word But this is a giant downpayment. No and You mentioned since i. I ran the export import bank for president obama when i look at our infrastructure to support. Us companies support us. Job support us exporters. We are solely and sorely deficient the ports. Our airports the roads the bridges. We all know all of that is way behind the rest of the world. We rank. I think number thirteen and infrastructure in the world. This is the united states. It is shocking. how we have led the slide. We have been. We've been sort of harvesting the work of future generations. We any new planting and have and have been putting more down payments down so we are well overdue and it will actually make the economy better. You know that as a businessman as well if we have a better infrastructure which includes broadband and everything else. The economy will actually operate far better. Has anybody spoken about maybe high speed. Rail's well. I mean this plan from what i understand has about an eighty billion dollar investment in amtrak It may be fast trains which are over hundred miles. An hour versus high-speed which is frequently two or three hundred miles an hour. I mean the cost differential is large but a greater reliance on short distances. For rail of is that we also have ignored which the rest of the world has been making enormous investments in both from climate point of view and just congestion a moving people quickly around the country. What else would you like to tell the. American people who are non on sunday morning. Well i think that You know we talked a little bit about trade and we focused as i said on what happened in suez. It does show that you know. We are reliant. On other countries we are reliant on other countries for goods and services and they in turn rely on us. So i think one thing we've seen with president biden and the team of people. He's brought in his understanding. We are all interconnected whether it has to do with what we started talking about with tons of the virus with it has to do with trade of goods and services with has to climate. And we're going to have to find ways to work together with other countries worked together with other people And so i think that's a that's a different change from the presidency that just ended which was more about going it alone versus finding ways. We can have common ground in finding some common solutions. They're not going to be perfect. They're all going to be difficult. But it's an approach that is going to be better in the long run as the largest economy in the world we benefit when the world benefits china. Yellen made a comment the other day that He would like to see a corporate tax rate similar to a group of countries. Is that workable. It is very much needed. It is very. It will be difficult to achieve. It probably won't happen overnight but you know you mentioned on. I worked in the administration. We had an agreement of globally that would export credit agencies like the eximbank provided financing to us companies so. They could export abroad about thirty five other countries industrialized countries. However not china agreed that we would follow the same kind of rules and not try to undercut each other so we do have experienced globally on finding some common ground with other countries. So we don't do a race to the bottom which benefits nobody so. That's example of where it has worked obvious. It's going to be harder with taxation but not impossible. People like christine lagarde when she was the imf international monetary fund very much. Was pushing this idea that we have to find a global agreement on taxes so we don't have companies chasing around the world for the lowest tax rates. You know the company you ran run a red apple and the oil company and mild coming lillian vernon where here in the us. We have to pay taxes and we have to rely on the us infrastructure. Many don't have the opportunity of the luxury to offshore certain operations in the interest lowering taxes. So we need to close those loopholes up fred. Hochberg for queen this Sunday morning in in giving all the american people better understanding of the situation. And we hope you go back to washington soon and help fix things. Thank you for having me as useful. John always loved to be on the south accurate. This is the cats roundtable. Be right back..

"When abe rosenthal is graduated from columbia university in two thousand nine. She entered the job market during a recession completing program in an ivy league. School was a big accomplishment for eva. Who originally from peru and says she wanted to make her dad proud while she was trying to pinpoint her next step. Abe and two friends took a road trip to napa california while on a trip. Eva expressed her frustration and disappointment on her career uncertainty. To one of the friends. Jim gen able to write down three things. She was passionate about on a napkin. Eva wrote traveling children and languages at the time she already lived in eight countries spread across four continents and spoke five languages. Got her thinking maybe she could start a business with these skills somehow after getting home from the trip eva created a google. Talk and brainstorm services. She could offer then researched how to fine tune them for example. She learned that it's extremely beneficial to get credited in order to be an interpreter in medicine. It's not enough to speak the language. Well the certification. At least in this case matters after figuring out what certification she needed avis set up a linked in premium account so that her profile would have more visibility and of course she needed a name on the same napkins us to write down favorite topics. Eva had also jotted down words. That described her hyper polyglot. Nomad poly-lingual influence to name a few looking back at that napkin. Two words stood out hyper and flint. Ab decided to combine the two to create hyper fluent. So after she narrow down the services she would offer including personalized one on one language courses cooking sessions in different languages translating and interpreting and more while she was getting hyper fluent services. Squared away able was offered a fellowship by the ministry of education of indonesia to study bahasa indonesia for a year even in her new role thousands of miles in twelve time zones away. Eva continued to focus on setting up a side business. She made business cards and bought a new camera to take professional photos on location while in indonesia. She made her first website. Which at the time was more of a block pricing structure dependent on what the service was and for how long a person needed it free tutoring. The price was fixed but if someone needed a series of manuals translated the price dependent on the number of words the target language the timeframe and sector. It's likewise for interpretation. The price dependent on the sector the distance to travel for the assignment and the duration. She also decided to price services differently in different countries in reflection of market realities. The first clients for hyper fluent came after she plays her profile in different teaching platforms such as university tutor dot com but like so many. New businesses are most successful marketing. Technique has been word of mouth. One of asia's prince spoke about hyper flew to an acquaintance. Who happened to be the personal assistant for an nba player. That basketball star became a client was also through connections that she landed her most significant gigs with the bank. Bloomberg and for some of the wealthiest families in new york city. She's also active on instagram her favorite online platform about that website. It's no longer just to block. A couple years ago she upgraded one with all the features she wanted. And it's now much more personalized scents. Beginning hyper fluent in two thousand. Eleven avis had about six hundred and fifty clients. She currently prophets around fifty thousand dollars a year from macedo also and yes. This is still aside us oil. Her full job is project manager. The international centers for precision oncology. Even with the busy job she plans to keep offering language services after the pandemic subsides. Yes i can't wait either. It's going to happen. She'll also began offering a one to two week. Immersion program in italy called mummy. And i go to sicily. This program will aim to teach italian two moms and their or daughters through immersing themselves in country says that some of our favorite memories have been through her business since she's learned four more languages worked and cooked with refugees in berlin and visited more than sixty five countries. All right i have a suggestion. Here is in a similar place. That able was a few years ago. If you happen to speak four or five languages only four or five right my justice. Don't try to do everything at once. Don't try to offer translation and interpretation and tutoring and cooking classes. It's great that it's been able to work for abe. And obviously she's been doing this a number of years now and she's found the perfect rhythm between her day job on her side hustle. But i think for a lot of people. You're actually going to be more successful in this field. If you're just doing one of those things maybe even for a specific target market like for example One of asia's client bases is wealthy families in new york city. You could say okay. I'm gonna do language tutoring for kids from well off families in this particular area where it could be something totally different but just picking something. I think is going to help a lot. So you're not just overwhelmed and trying to do it all also. I really loved the google doc method. You know when he got back from her california road trip. She made a google doc and brainstorm services she could operate using her language skills and from there she made various observations. Like oh i should get a certification to be medical interpreter and probably some other observations as well so just kind of scratching things out and making notes of your skills and what services. Those talents might lend themselves to can be very helpful.

What Is Worcestershire Sauce?

"It's that brown sauce with a nine unpronounceable name. It looks on paper. Like war hester shire. It's a tiny tasty edition to red meats soups and pretty much. Anything that needs brazing. And according to the company that originally created it lea and perrins. it can be pronounced. Worcester shire worcestershire or worcester. Sheer worcestershire sauce is used to make good things even better because it packs a lot of savory nece sometimes called you mommy the word emami by the way was coined in the first decade of the nineteen hundreds as a way of marketing. The then newly isolated flavor compound monosodium glutamate or msg but back to the sauce. We spoke by email was shameless. Mullen a chef at the institute of colin area -cation he said in recent years there's been a newfound interest in amami or the fifth taste after salty sweet bitter and sour described as deliciousness. The amami brings out the natural flavourings and food makes steak taste more sticky mushrooms. More shrew me worcestershire sauce is made up of a lot of flavorful ingredients including anchovies. That's right it's not generally vegan plus red onion molasses garlic tamarind and malt and or cider vinegar mullen said the vinegar and tamarind bring a punchy city to the sauce and the molasses and onion balance out the sweetness but the true magic happens during the lengthy fermentation process which takes eighteen to twenty four months. This last and most critical step was something of a happy accident. When supposedly in the early eighteen hundreds to chemists based in worcester england john lee and william parents were charged with duplicating a recipe that one british nobleman or another had enjoyed in bengal. Their first effort was an utter failure. However and chemists left it to languish in jars their seller a few years later they rediscovered the batch and were thrilled to realize that fermentation had turned it into the perfect savory sauce. They started selling it in eighteen thirty seven. It came to the us in eighteen thirty nine and is sold in over seventy five countries today when that original leeann parents product was shipped overseas. It's glass bottles often broke as a result of rough waters. So the company began rapping the individual bottles and paper. The tradition continues today more a way to distinguish the brand rather than a need to keep the product whole the company lost the copyright to the name in eighteen. Seventy six a while. Leeann parents recipe remains a closely guarded. Secret competitors have sprung. Up to make similar versions. The bbc counted at least thirty others and worcester alone. You can even making it yourself at home. Mullen said while the aging and fermenting process might be a bit much to undertake at home. You can make a very tasty approximation of worcestershire sauce. By simmering soy sauce mustard powder malt vinegar tamarind paste garlic anchovy paste tomato paste ginger molasses and spices. Those spices he said can include coriander seed mustard seed and the clove as well as orange peel and black pepper. He explained the simply. Mix all the ingredients and similar to sauce consistency. Then strain in store liquid. There are lots of recipes online including several for those of us who have been playing around with home for medication and of course the beloved sauce isn't relegated to stakes and such either. It can be added to pretty much anything that needs inning bitter bloody mary fondue cheese sauce eggs popcorn potato salad dressing or a grilled cheese sandwich. Leeann parents even recommends a splash of it in place of your normal dashes of salt and pepper. The continuing enthusiasm over mommy flavor is carrying over into the share market and this recent uptick is expected to continue projected through twenty twenty five. At least mullen explained amami hounds have been on the hunt for heritage condiments likely and perrins original recipe and there's an ever increasing trend toward finding new applications for the sauce or marinade. Cocktails worcestershire sauce is having a moment.

"For. Neil patrick the decision to start a side. Business wasn't just so he could quit his day job and travel the world while still having an income and that was part of it but it was also a decision guided by his desire to provide for his parents. You see for thirty two years. His parents owned video rental stores. Do you remember those. But of course the industry was on its way out in this was the mid two thousand. Ten's whatever you call that decade the mid two thousand ten's. I'm not sure but those doors weren't doing well around this time. Neil who was working fifty to sixty hours a week decided. He wanted to start a service to help parents as well as himself. He tried a number of paths as he tried different side. Hustles creating an ecommerce. Site blogging about pet hair vacuums and more before stumbling across a post on. Read it from someone who started cleaning company in that post the author laid out the detailed steps taken to get going after reading through the post carefully. Neil decided to give it a try himself in early two thousand thirteen. He established made this in los angeles cleaning. Service that specializes in airbnb and residential. Cleanings his first step in doing so was creating a website tall task because he had no technical background. You'll bought a template for about one hundred dollars researched how to host a website and published. What he said was initially pretty crappy looking site. Hey we've all been there. Y'all needed to determine how much to charge for cleaning services and find a cleaners themselves. He started by contacting local people with existing companies and asking them how much they charged and with their cleaning packages. Were looking at the competition. He was able to make sure there was enough margin built into his service to ensure he could operate successfully he puts it from the reddit post to the pricing scale. He essentially started made this by copying what other companies were doing at least as a way of getting things up and running although he had software to charge customers. You'll didn't know how to pay the cleaners at first. So after they got done with an appointment he would have them come to his office where he'd run downstairs. Get cash out of an atm and hand it to them eventually. He figured out a better way. Overall it took two months to get up and running to find customers. Neil focused on digital marketing. He says local marketing a gem because you're competing against local businesses only not the entire world. So it's a bit easier to manage. And it also cost less as i customer came about july twenty thirteen which he remembers because he snuck outside from his full time job and started dancing. Another advantage to local markets is that there are many third party platforms. Like angie's list or thumb tack and neil would charge a low price at first to attract initial customers. You also tried posting flyers and using social media although he says that wasn't an especially useful marketing tool for him since people don't usually by cleaning services that way. These days made this mostly generate sales from a combination of sco yelp and paid digital ads. Because he wanted to eventually quit his full time. Job and travel. You'll established made this so they could be operated by a fully remote team of employees which includes his parents. Total investment cost was around two thousand dollars which included his website. Those digital marketing ads and advertising for cleaners operated the business part time gig for two years by two thousand fifteen. The business was doing around thirty thousand dollars in monthly sales with twenty percent profit margin so six thousand dollars in monthly profit with a success. Quit his job and booked one way flight to colombia. The business doubled that year and he's since traveled to more than thirty five countries while scaling. What was once his side. Hustle looking to the future neal is aiming to be the millennial franchise disrupting the old school cleaning franchise industry.

Soft Power 2020

"Am joined today on special soft power program by mongols foreign editor megan gibson monocle culture editor kiara ramallah and monocle twenty four culture correspondent and eurovision desk chief. Fernando augusto up. We have a lot to cover in analyzing who made l. top ten this year and who didn't but we should talk about first of all meghan. What an unusual year for calibrating soft power. This was because of course it was like every country on earth given the same test it was like he is a pandemic deal revert. And see what it says about you. As a nation did it make a difference on how countries will seen by the rest of the world and soft power terms. It absolutely did like you said every country was dealing pretty much the same set of problems but just as internally the pandemic kind of shed light on where countries weren't up to snuff and where there's certain systems were lacking or the social welfare net was not working so too did a show which countries were really relying on kind of coasting approach to diplomacy and soft power. Every country had to turn inward in some respect. You had to face an economy. Crunch you had to face a healthcare crisis but a lot of countries still managed to think about diplomacy and what. They're projecting abroad and to other countries and global cooperation. And that is something. I think that kind of threw up some surprises when we actually looked at the year in terms of soft power some countries that have never made our list before immediately caught our eye. Well let's talk about that. We'll come back a bit later to how different countries responded to the covid nineteen crisis. But let's look first of all at our top ten and meghan all ask you again. You were talking about surprise entries in the top ten. Who is there. The see that hasn't been before i think the first one. I'm going to go to taiwan. And i should say we've done top ten this year. Usually we do top twenty five. We quickly realized that there weren't twenty five countries. That actually made that good impression on the world. I would say this year. A peace prize in the nineteen forties. Exactly we cut it down to ten and picked the ten countries that did something notable on the world stage and taiwan absolutely one of them from their stellar leadership in actually handling the virus. Which i mean has seen the country. Even today has had quite a minimal effect. On at the helm of its citizens numbers have been tiny and given their proximity to china. Remarkable for that. That's just been something that they've really been able to step up and show that they've had good leadership and for such a tiny country and a country that has been long grappling with a very antagonistic neighbor. That's been really impressive. And i think we've also could look at another country that has made our list consistently but also small and has done really well with the pandemic and that's new zealand new zealand again a beneficiary of its leadership and of its leader. Another factor we will come back to later in the show. I wanted to bring you in now. Kiara refu- look at the top ten. Were there any entries in there that left out at you. It's difficult for me to look at this without my cultural hat on. Because i do think that cultural exports make up so much of a country soft power their own way. You know if you do have a tv hit. That really can change. The international perspective of people have on your country in the issue. We have profile of borgen. The danish show which kind of guess kicked off almost a huge facination with scanning wa. I'm happy that south korea is in the fair number and i were discussing. Grammy results on are getting their first ever kind of major grammy nomination. I mean that is huge because the grammys are essentially a us kind of awards ceremony. Yes of course it has one global subcategory but it's largely. Us fakest for a korean bond to be nominated as part of that really means that they have become not only a korean band moore global bond and that radius testament to the power of capes. I think south korea has really well deserved second-place cultural reasons but also for all the other reasons dr megan was discussing. It's very interesting. Also you you know you mentioned new zealand as well and perhaps it's a very niche reason to be very well known abroad but i do think that new zealand has got an increasing amount of really interesting. Musical acts that are genuinely world class. I'm talking the likes of zuma. Alice harding benet talking. Broods mullen williams all quite indie acts but in the the community which is very dedicated. Genuinely these are kind of agenda setting also around the world. So i think it's really interesting. That a tiny nation can produce a really interesting side of the musical experimentation side of things obviously around this table. Four nations are represented all nations with instantly recognizable and widely understood national brands. And that's my nation of australia. Kiara of italy fernando's of brazil megan's of canada which i notice is the only one in the top ten. This whole thing is just the most shameless stitch-up so fernando to bring you in brazil a country with a powerful national brand and yet you are not in the top ten this year. Do you feel especially put out by that is. Is there a case you would like to make well. No no no not not in two thousand twenty eight gave you the big buildings builder. People would be surprised by me. Because i always a believer brazilian. I'm very proud of being resilient. And i am still an and we do have an amazing opportunity to be one of the best countries in soft power so perhaps in a few years will be there the top of the list but honestly i mean this year has been terrible for brazil president. He's an isolationist. he's not handling very well. The situation in the rain forest which matters a lot for the outside world. Perhaps those of us who enjoy breathing so exactly. But i mean it. It is an issue in brazil. but i notice. We've all my friends when they say. Oh how during forest the amazon. Your president doesn't care. And of course his declaration sometimes every day he said something quite offensive to specific groups. And it's funny. I was trying to say i mean. What is brazil doing. well now we. We are student load of great things but even at football you have. Our biggest star neymar liked by some. But he's but even in brazil. Laura people don't like neymar like perhaps some aspects of his personality. So then i think even football. We're not so well liked turfing. We need to improve. I am an optimistic. I think things will change but two thousand twenty is yeah. I agree it. It's not the year of brazil. And i do think this year has been a blip for a lot of countries and as i was saying you know cultural experts from italy. Obviously still very strong italian food still eating around the world unloved around the world especially on this table but this year it was all about the countries that had cut through and what the cut through was what the stories that were resonating around. The world like fernandez. The amazon is what people were thinking about. When they thought about brazil they were not thinking of amazing beaches. Or you know wonderful culture and things like that it was the bad headlines that were really being projected around the world just finally in this first part of the show. I am going to rise heroically above complaining too much about the struggles exclusion in favor of new zealand. And just let these self evident absurdity of that speak for itself but meghan there couple of other countries which again have shoes soft power in princeton fact arguably the countries with the to hugest soft power imprint i e the united kingdom and the united states neither of the mike it and is that just about covid nineteen and all the people who happened to be leading them at the moment. It is definitely down to leadership. Soft power is usually something that is built up over years and decades so usually it can survive a bad year it can survive a wrong thinking government but in the case of the uk and definitely the us. It's not that. Diplomacy was neglected in the last few years. I mean we've seen a lot of policies that have been actually hostile to global cooperation. And i think a lot of people's perceptions of those countries have really shifted especially when it comes to the us under donald trump.

Why Does Your Business Exist? with Jimmy Mellado

"In business and leadership everybody's talking about purpose vision mission goals you know all that stuff sounds fancy, right? We know enough to know we need this stuff but what the heck is it especially purpose. This idea of purpose can feel kind of philosophical or mystical. I'm GonNa tell you though it's not guys. It's the reason you exist and if you don't have one you're screwed. From the Ramsey network, this is the entree leadership podcast where we business leaders grow themselves their teams and the Prophets I'm your host Daniel Tardy today. My guest is Jimmy Mulatto. Jimmy's been a part of a successful startup. He's an Olympic athlete and today he's the CEO of Compassion International. He leads a team of over three thousand employees and over thirty five countries. Talk about a guy who understands why you have to have direction a goal passion fire a purpose. And for Jimmy. Figuring out his purpose started at a really young age. There were some real strong themes early early in life than I immediately think back of Nicaragua. says. A little boy was born outside the United States grew up in six different countries. I'm one generation away from poverty. My mom knows what it's like to keep a dirt floor clean daughter migrant farmers on the Mexico US border, Mexican culture but my dad and her married and they were adventurer. So they move forty one times in sixty two years of marriage. And I was in six countries before celebrating my first birthday grew up and seven. So fascinating and I love the my childhood. But in in nineteen seventy, two, I was living in Nicaragua and third grade and I watched the Berlin Olympics and something happened and I said I WANNA be a part of the Olympic movement and that started you know sixteen years of training and working and dedicating myself to getting just developing the skill, the craft, and all these different events was a generalist I wasn't a specialist I just loved all the events and the decathlon fit me. Purpose that you had loved to be a part of the Olympics that drove me for sixteen years until seeing that that vision realized and that's just one area and purpose can emerge in different areas of life. You have an epiphany have calling you have a transformative moment or something traumatic happens, and then all sudden this energy inside of you wells up you wanNA make a difference. You want to make an impact somewhere. That's the birth. Of purpose it could be purpose for life. Yeah. But everybody's looking for purpose, but it could be purpose for. An organization every organizations dying to have real purpose defined it. You know a lot of times purpose. I know in my story a lot a lot of businesses we work with it starts out as as something closer to survival or just pay the bills. You know you're not really thinking about this big impact. You'RE GONNA make on the universe it's almost like, yeah, that's for smart people. I just got to get this thing off the ground. Is it always that way or the big organizations that really make a difference do they know from the beginning like this is why they're gonNA EXIST Well I mean I don't know for certain but from my experience, it's always been that way for me. When you're starting something, it's fragile. It's not defined. It's just got energy and you don't know where that energy is actually going to go my first year leading a startup organization the Willow Creek Association, which is a training leadership training organization that was started in thousand ninety two when I was a part of that as a six employees, we lost a quarter million dollars at first. Year and our very existence was threatened. So our immediate like right here purpose was survive another year survive another day survive another payroll. That's the real visceral reality of startups and and they're all consuming. But that more closer in purpose it really does always have to be in the context of a longer longer-term purpose and I will say this it's not always clear. It's not always clear what that longer term purposes when you're a startup situation, you've got some that created there was the sense. That hey, we want to help churches thrive. So the Willow Creek Association got created but then how does that look? What's the priority? What's the focus? What's the strategy? How are we gonNA do that and how are we going to do that in a sustainable way? So all those questions get answered it takes time to answer them and in the meantime you gotta survive. Yes. It seems like you're saying it's not an exercise you do at a retreat it's more a process that you. Refine. As you're figuring out what you're about and you're experimenting with the marketplace Senate, it's evolving to some degree. Absolutely no doubt about it. Net actual real life experience is speaking into how that purpose will get crystallized and become clear over time and it will if you keep pursuing it,
