"We looking. So we're looking good, and there's a lot to talk about. We always have this guy on Friday to Richard Skinner, local 12 skinny. There's a lot to talk about here. I originally wanted to just kind of do a Bengals preview but now big college football news Well, college ball news. Yeah, Yeah. I mean, Tom Collins news in general, if you see going to the big 12, Yeah, it is really incredible. How quickly Texas and Oklahoma bolted from from the big 12 to the SEC. And then how quickly the big 12 kind of recovered a little bit here and picked up the four teams they get, including. You see, so Um, I think I think the big part now is you are in a power five league. Um, you're going to get by triple the amount of money coming in every year. We're not just talking about it. One time payoff there. You're talking about every single year. It gives you a chance to build facilities that your football coach wants. Um, you know, it gives you a chance to pay assistant coach is probably what you're football coach was. The finding is that this gets talked about in terms of football and it is all about football. But how about from a basketball league perspective when you're getting a chance to have the defending national champion at least when? This year? Baylor Kansas is a blue blood program? Hopefully, Bob Huggins is still coaching West Virginia at the point that this really does come to fruition in a couple of years. It's a real win on the basketball side of things, too. So I guess there's no downside of this whatsoever other than those things left behind the Americans. Well, if you guys would just a little bit breakdown. Who's all in this conference for people who aren't familiar? You heard of the big 12? Certainly, But maybe you're not aware of all the teams in there. You just name some of them. Yeah, well, the new teams are coming in are BYU, UCF Houston and you see, those are the four news The holdovers. I'm doing this off the top of my head and Jason, you can chime in Baylor. Um, Iowa State. Kansas. Kansas State. Um, TCU, Texas Tech that I miss one. Jason. Oklahoma State and Oklahoma State. Yeah, thank you. Yeah, you say Baylor I did say Baylor. Yeah. Yeah, but so there, you see what you see is going to be dealing with, and that's a pretty impressive lineup. Yeah, I think it's I think it's great, you know, and I think it also gives you when they expand the football playoffs. Now, you know that the whole fear even this year, as you see runs the table and still gets left out of the college football playoff because it's four teams and they're not in the power Five league. Well, now you're going to a league where you might be able to lose a game or two. Actually, you're going to play better teams weekend and week out, and I think it is just more exciting and it gives you a fighting chance, especially if they do expand the playoffs, So I think it's a great day, and it just It's amazing how quickly all of this is happening. College sports over the last Three or four months went with what happened with the SEC poaching the two teams Then now the four teams going to the big 12 and skinny. We forgot to mention West Virginia. I think that was the eighth. Well, yeah, as much as I can't stand the West Virginia mountaineers as a fan, Uh, I certainly can appreciate that coming from an old Marshall guy. Coming from a marshal. And you see, alum you see fan and a huge Marshall fan having grown up in southeast Ohio, but skinny I want to ask you this are you I am of the mind that the bear cats number seven in the country right now. I think we're Luke Fickell Has that program They walk in on day one from a facility standpoint. From where Luke Fickell has this football program, they walk in day one to the big 12. And they are a contending football program in that conference. Even I think that's what ideas only his parents get his right. Um, you know. Oklahoma State certainly has the money and the facilities. Um, by by far but they've not been able to get over that hump. You know, they're always in that 89 wind category. Um so, yeah, I'm with you. You know it. You're losing arguably the two best football programs on a consistent basis from that league in Texas and Oklahoma. More so obviously, Oklahoma of late Um, but you know, that's fine. You stood still considered a power Five league and you're right. I mean, look at that lead right now. I mean, if you were to match them up with anybody in that league this season I'm not so sure you see isn't a favorite in just about every game they would play. I agree Team other than Texas and Oklahoma and the remaining big full teams. Yeah, and I think to say they're going from there going from 10 now back to 12. And if you look at the again the on field product If you take into consideration the money and all the the the alumni bases and all those factors around Oklahoma and Texas, you cannot replace that their overall value. But if you look at the on field product I think the fact that you put you see in central Florida you look at the past decade with the exception of few seasons for for each of those two schools. Those two schools have been playing power five level football. I believe You know, really, obviously for you see, since Brian Kelly was here, obviously the few seasons with with Tuberville, where a blip But overall uh you know, you see has been, I think has been playing at a power five level and an even higher left. Certainly. Higher level since, uh you know, Luke Fickell second season in what 2018. That was because he took over the mess with probability that little bit of time. Did you get that to get things right? But no, You're right. Um, you know, and then It was kind of a shame a few years ago that they got kind of left out of that big 12 conversation with the big 12 opted not to expand. Um, Yeah, here it is today and it worked out for the best. But you know what? I gotta call him since ST dot com tomorrow about this is that a lot of that groundwork Was laid because this thing move quickly. This thing happened with really last couple of weeks. I had I had a meeting with someone at the university was in the No. Two weeks ago Wednesday, and it was not even mentioned. And and then this thing just went fast and and and I'll tell you, I think, because a lot of the groundwork was laid. Back in 2015 and 2016. And I covered that for the Inquirer and the fact and I even kind of detailed it, And even from a public standpoint and a private standpoint, the university really laid a lot of ground work. They really impressed Bob Bowlsby, the big 12 commissioner. Back, you know, five and six years ago. Uh, you look back, and I even mentioned in my column tomorrow is that you know, Urban Meyer went to bat for you. See, he publicly said, I think they should be in this con for the Big 12 conference. John Kasich, the then governor who never did anything for Cincinnati, sent a letter to Bowlsby saying, Hey, get these guys in there. I think all those things sort of really laid laid out a lot of the hard work and then now they were on the radar because Luke Fickell has come in since then and taking things to another level. Calling from a facility standpoint. I mean, you know if they don't redo dipper, and they don't do reduce, that's right. Yeah, you tell the big 12. Hey, we'll do it now. And they go. Well, You wish you had done it before, And then we're not really their facilities like some of that played into it as well. They got things going ahead of time. No, no. And you look a hunt between the two major facilities. 173 million They've invested in Nippert and 5th 3rd Arena since 2015 never it's a whole different place. That's in our first time I saw which was a long time ago. Granted, but good Lord Skinny. You tell me this place. You telling me skinny like you've been covering sports for 30 some years and Uh, you know, it's not the biggest venue in college football head, but but it's nice..

Richard Skinner Brian Kelly Bob Bowlsby Bob Huggins John Kasich 2015 Tom Collins Luke Fickell 2016 Texas Tech Jason TCU 2018 173 million Friday Urban Meyer Bengals five two schools two teams

Let's start first by analyzing not the performance but the result itself a scoreless. Draw away against salvadoran. The first of three. Are you satisfied with it. Satisfied wouldn't be necessarily the word it's acceptable right. It's this road formula you steal steal away and you secure points at home so if we're going by that formula team that didn't qualify last world cup because they failed to secure points at home because they failed to steal points away then. Yeah by that standard. I wouldn't say satisfied. But it's an acceptable result. So yeah acceptable i mean. Isn't this the most talented generation of us players ever. "I mean, the American has been a very, very good league. If you just look at the analytics, you know it's finished. In front of power five leagues. I think Korea the last five years and certainly certain parts of leagues. So it's a It's a good conference. It's a conference that's very, very competitive. You know, when you look at these teams, I mean, look at the success Central forward has had in big ball games. You know, through the years when they're playing on the year's day against power, five people and same thing could be said of Cincinnati. I mean, when you look at that game last year, Cincinnati and Georgia You know, there wasn't that much difference. I mean, there was you said Well, Cincinnati belongs on the field of these guys. And so I think our league is very undervalued, but at the same time, everybody's always trying to improve. There a lot, and the good thing is our league is in a position of power, and I really truly believe that we'll have some opportunities to add Some teams that can really help move the needle for the American and That's my hope is that we're able to add some teams that can continue to make the league better and better and more competitive and and give it a better national reputation. Sonny Dykes my guest Sunday one last topic if you don't mind earlier in camp You had Kim and Mark Kolinsky speak to the team about their son. The late Tyler Kolinsky and mental health. Why was that? Something that was so important to you? And what did you want your team to take away from that conversation? Well, you know, I think as football coaches and his athletes, um you know, we've always talked about, you know, physical health, and you know the importance of nutrition and the importance of weight lifting the importance of Of all the different things that we preach to our players getting good sleep, But the mental health, I think is probably the most important aspect of all of those. The one that for some reason we've overlooked, um You know, I do think that that in our world today, especially it's so important with so much going on. There's so much To be anxious about with young people. And so what we have to do is we have to number one create a culture where our guys can talk about these kind of issues where they can. You know if they need help, they can come ask us for help that can come. Ask a teammate for help. And then also to that we start to pay attention to these things, and that we as coaches and us as a program start to do everything we can to help them, develop their mental health and help them become More apt to deal with issues that they have to deal with on a day to day basis, and so We want to try to take care of every aspect of our student athletes and our players, and I think mental health really should be at the forefront of those things. And for whatever reason, you know, we we've missed that opportunity in college football and college athletics through the years, and so We've got to try to do everything we can direct. If I that remedy it. We're trying to get as creative as we can to help our players deal with all the different issues that they face. It's so critical on such an important message. Good for you, his head football coach at S M u entering his fourth season there. The season opener is against Abilene Christian on September 4th. He is Sonny Dykes. Sunny. Appreciate the conversation. Great to have you back Thanks for making time for us today, and I always enjoy it. Yeah, Jim, Thanks for having me on always always enjoyed coming on. Appreciate it. Great to have you sunny. Thank you very much. Sonny Dykes is doing an amazing job. They're amazing job there. You know, I'm really I'm struck by that the conversation in the sense that That's a really good coach. Really good on a number of different levels, But I don't feel like I'm topping talking to that prototypical coach, which is thrown out cliches. I feel like I'm just talking to You know, like a leader. You know, Business owner CEO. Standard person. Just not that coach. He was like, Coach talk, Coach speak, but you're talking about really short person. And then he'll talk philosophy and he'll talk scheme, you know, talk players, and then you remember you're talking to a high level coach, but it doesn't feel like you're just talking to a coach kind of struck by that always enjoyed that conversation. Especially that part of the very anti about mental health for so long. It was so taboo and it's like, not always is something to be avoided, like the most important thing. All right, So we are now through the interview pushed on the program. We had John Maroc. We had Aaron Rodgers. We had Sonny Dykes were open the rest of the way. 1 806 368686. What? I still want to get to The hood. Did you see the way Bill Belichick lit up yesterday during a press briefing? I mean, nobody hates anything as much as that guy hates talking to the press yet I've never seen him happier about anything than he was yesterday. Why is that? We've got that story for him. Oh, man. What kind of dog is that? What's the dog's name anyway? I love dogs. Hmm. Uh, big dog guy, all sorts of dogs. Especially that dog, huh? Yeah, I got a dog. Yeah, we both got dogs. Maybe we should go to doggedly Park. In addition to that, speaking of.

"In order to compete with luke wants to wants to success of the new rules in the g. league start to really take shape their college basketball. Look at it and realize okay. We gotta get on the same kind of even playing field with that to be able to compete. And that's why he's been saying the incident drag their feet with name image and likeness seeing some individual conferences. Start the push for quicker and expedite the process politically because you know. They want schools to be able to come to their schools. You have to compete for kids now. That's what we are commissioner question to both of you because everybody says like a panacea this is like oh as soon as we get the right person. Everything's good college football and we can go to basketball as former athletes if you say to me. Let's hire this impeccable man or woman that's gonna come in and change everything. What incentive does the fourteen team. Sec have to agree to do something in concert with the way behind the times zero pac twelve in some cases right. They're not you personally but the big ten is fourteen teams. The big twelve has ten teams which doesn't make any sense. But that's the case if you bring all those leagues together everybody says just get some central leadership it. It's all good. Why would any of these leagues that are all in despair positions. Why with somebody would come in and say let's unite. What is the incentive for. Any of these leaks to do that. That's the whole argument. Bring somebody together. They'll make it unified. I don't see that who's gonna come in well. First of all is going to be more money generated if they're all put together right z. Is going to be a big giant package. Think about five five leagues with all these different teams now. Some of the teams are very good but all conferences have bad teams in. We you start talking about the best of the best all under one umbrella in not this. Nc two a mess. Then that's going to generate more revenue in those presidents. those universities. What is it that they want. they want more revenue. You agree with that or do you think it's easier said than done. I think it's extremely complicated. I think there's so many layers of course as easy to sit here on national tv and radio and say this is what they need to do when you start to get to the inner workings of how the car really works. There's a lot of agendas out there to true agendas and a lot of people that are trying to buy for different positions. And i want to happen i just. I don't know all the answers to how we get there zooming. I don't just chase the money so you got to do. That's what they do in any way right now. They're they're you know. I i keep seeing and hearing people talk about guys getting on the field on the court to play but at the end of the day. They're playing an empty stadiums. Why why the money. The money exactly. So if it's about the money this let it be about. The money is stopped trying to act like the kids really need to play. Because if they don't play all of a sudden they're going to be lost they gotta go back to their neighborhoods. And don't don't do that. Don't do that to meet. You might be able to do it to some other people that don't understand it but don't try to sell me a bag of good when i know better if there's one takeaway because i really commend justin fields for coming on this show yesterday and talking about the petition and talking about how he wants to play. But there's one thing that kind of been sitting with me for the last twenty four hours that kind of irk me and key used it. As soon as he said he said you know we were talking about. Hey we are united and players have to leverage and he said. Hey i just wanna focus priority wise right now the petition and just playing football. And i'm saying no no no. Let's make both the priority. Don't just is so easy to actually. Just wanna play football and we got to change the way we think to elevate consciously the powers that be right now only wanna hear justify he'll say that i only wanna play football so they can say see. All they care about is playing football they just wanna get out there in play and try and get an opportunity to play on sundays so they can help their families. What are they going to get that opportunity regardless because the. Nfl is not taking any leads from college. Sports or football so to speak. They may be willing to help them to a degree moving date here there. But they're not changing their entire schedule to appease college football. And i hear that everybody's not going to nfl right so a counter argument does not going. I mostly not but that makes that makes the point even more imperative though right it. Most people aren't going to nfl. This is your opportunity to get a headstart. you're playing football. You playing football for millions and i think it just like guinea when a message from a positive standpoint when a message is being given people try to get away from that positive message by talking about something totally different we. Are you nine it. They want to get away from that. They don't want that to continue to to catch fire. They wanna start to hide behind the pandemic in talk about playing sports instead of talking about that conversation on a consistent basis and i encourage those.

"Are blind. I know you were listening to the game. What did you hear about Johnny Cueto? About Johnny Clay, or he came back too soon. Okay, That's what you figure, huh? We passed the demon elf Snow, and he wasn't there. And you thought that what do you do that what he was doing? I think he was doing just standard stuff. You know, Like another stroke bone on the swing going all that's up there to distract the batter or you're not that I think what happened? You know, he went out there and you do the best you can do and he wasn't there. Yeah, I agree. And you know you were listening to it with John and Dave and I got to watch it and it just he wasn't perfection in the ball wasn't hitting the corners is slider was Ah, Spin. It wasn't a heartbreak. The changeup wasn't the deceptive like he usually did. And precious it was It wasn't good and for him what he did in Sacramento with the alternate site thrown on the side or throwing batting practice. It wasn't game ready. And like I always say you can throw live BP you can throw on the side and feel great. But when you go into those hitters and those hitters on the Padres, and you're going right into the fire with the San Diego Padres, Plus Losing the first two games. They were tying your shoes a little tighter and gripping at battle, Wilmore and and that's what ended up happening today and they chased him after three That torture you know, it's kind of like going back two years back. We had tortured no trying to win games, and then we win the game and always put a hard but we got it. But sometimes, you know, You got take forward to take the grand solved. Just what you lost. Make up tomorrow. Let's start over again. Yeah, that's what you got to do on some of these games, and we haven't had these bad of games. So far this season has been Tremendously better on the positive side there 20 and 14 13 34 games And that's really the first stinker they've had. And it was. I tell you what Matt Whistler and Darling Garcia, Those guys threw the ball well, Whistler that was the best two Waiting's he's thrown is in Giants uniform. He was spot on couple strikeouts. Six up. Six down. Could be that middle guy now and then Garcia came in. We haven't seen Garcia since he got sent down with that injury and I thought he threw the ball well to, um Alvarez struggled right off the bat and then to throw into center field the balance when he caught the ball in front of the mound. He was off balance and throwing it up going in center field, but You have to make those adjustments, especially if you're on the front of the mound. You have to make it where it's in the in the second basement, short stops, chest and hey, let it go, and it really blew up that inning cause that inning they scored four runs. That's your question. Uh, what's going on with devolved computer ball and and the other young hit, which was real hard? No, Harlan, do ball or no. Jailing your ball. Of all, you know that one commuter ball is millet of all? Yeah, Camilla Double. He came in the game The other night He came in who you had a guy that came in there and you give up a home run. Hey, thought real hard at the helm, a slider and even else No getting sent down. I think it's 2021 22 years old. Exactly exactly tells up Are you talking about Gregory Santos? Chanted, Ergo, the big Santos is in Triple eight. They're playing Las Vegas right now, and I don't know if they won or lost Today I was following that They were having a good game in Las Vegas they lost last night. They had a Tend five league going in the bottom of the ninth inning and then a blues in that game. They're playing good baseball in Sacramento. Matter of matter of fact, every division triple A double A single a low way are the Giants have really been playing good baseball around. So, uh, you ready to reliever? Who's that? The windows. Gregory Gregory. Yeah, he's a reliever. He's middle guy, short guy. Uh, you know that type of role, but you know, he throws hard. Hey, was put in a couple of late games and it didn't work out for him, So they sent him back down. I tell you, a guy that really like his who's up now, exactly Tell pitched a little bit with the Twins threw the ball real well yesterday pitcher in the major league She played today. You know, weather Ryan Weathers. Ryan Weathers you're talking about? Yeah, that giant so that no, That's what the Padres the Padres. He was. Yeah, he's a starter Middleman. He threw the ball real well for the Padres today. Right. Thanks for the call, man. Thanks. Appreciate it. Have a great Sunday. All right. Thanks. Right. Let's go to Greg in Portland. Greg, How are you doing this evening? I am doing fine. Let me take up the speaker. I didn't think it gets to me so quick. Yeah, I got a couple more calls. I thought I'd jump on you real quick here and talk about do Bob because he did make a blunder again on the basis and watching the ball instead of watching rotten voters are Watching that kind of thing. The guy from Oregon he kind of robbed me of my thunder, but But, you know, anyway, I'm just You know, we talked about this last week, and it's I'm not of the analytics school, So I'm just looking. You know, I'm like a crab. I'm waiting to jump on those guys. But you're watching the game. That's that's what you're doing and what you're doing. You're analyzing the game, good and bad, And that's what That's what happens. It seems like this kind of game 11 and one little things like do Bond outscored its back to find him and I'm watching the game and listening. I think it was type that said, You know, you know he made a bad mistake, and I hope it doesn't come back The harness. Cause we need to do something this inning. You're down 50 in the seventh and we all know That those leads don't always hold up and we should know that giant fans but also the potteries. You know, they don't work serious champions yet. I'm I'm not sold on them yet. They have a great lineup. I'm not sold on them. They do. Their bullpen is really good. They're starting pitching's coming around. They are a top line team. Don't get me wrong, but I'm not sold on them running away with the NL West. No chance, right? Right. So anyway, I didn't like that and do but the body of work is piling up with du Bon. Uh, on what I said last week, too, you and it's not just him. It's these young guys. They don't know how to play baseball there clearly. You're right. You don't like my word coaching, but they need to be coached Fundamentals..

"I guess I'm Jeff Goodman. He is Robbie Hummel and we've got sweet sixteen matchups Rob. We got them and they're not what we thought they'd be that's what games I mean right now. How's your bracket? Look? Probably about as good as your Big Ten looks. We have the same bracket. So it looks terrible both we did of the same. We had the same part of four. We didn't have the same sweet sweet sixteen but let's start with with the funeral home of your Big Ten cuz it is your big ten. I mean, let's face it like you are very big tent. I've been I've been a champion of the league the whole year and the thing that's crazy though wage is I don't know. It's you know, what I gotta do though. Yeah, I got I must do that for you. Think about the Big Ten though is I don't I feel like I don't have a good explanation for why this happened all other than all right, like with covid-19 conference got chopped for the most part you played in like some teams playing their Thanksgiving event. You got a couple but we didn't get like the typical non-conference slate. We didn't get those matchups against other power five leagues. And because the Big Ten was so good the previous year. We just assumed But like from watching these teams. Like seeing Michigan seeing Illinois watching Purdue at times sitting Ohio State for most of the years like man, they're good..

"That can come in and legitimately carry your program to a conference championship in the power. Five leagues or incidentally tournament in kentucky didn't get those jobs this year. That's not a knock against who they got. They just didn't get a guaranteed lottery. Pick top ten. Pick in this year's freshman class like jalen suck and duke. so when you're when you're counting on your freshman class as much as duke and kentucky s count on the past s a lot of pressure to get it right. Every year and kentucky's recruiting class was good great. So i think that's a big reason. Why you see kentucky duke on the on the wrong side of this conversation right. now it's odyssey that bracket come out and no kentucky duke. No indiana that's where we are. There is no the there's no birthright to get in the tournament as a fan base. You have to accept it like we can't take for granted but sometimes a year like this. I spoken with coach. Calipari about it could really ignite. You are going forward. And i think that'll happen for for kentucky for sure. Yes sir well as north carolina fan. I can tell you that. I'm not trying any tears and kentucky not being in the tournament no matter how bad we are this year Least do his Okay i got a question for ya and that is give me Two of the one seeds that are most likely to not make the final four. You got your top four teams.

"Jim, you always say in your ads, I'd love this. There's no better place to be. Why is that John and our dealerships? We just don't sell cars. We sell people comfort and convenience in a fun environment to buy a car. The average car cost $33,500. That's a lot of money. It sure is. But what you got to realize is that every dealership pays the same for those vehicles. It's how we can structure the deal to be affordable. It's all about the dealer. Giving them options and listening to the customer's needs. Talked to him a little bit about the need to buy wisely and protect your investment. Well, first of all, you can't buy an emotion. It's really a time to sit down into an investigate and our salespeople are counselors. They aren't selling the car. "I've not heard from a medical professional who seems credible. Who has said that somebody My profile 43. Yeah, only healthy young ish. Look, I'm I'm not at the front of the line s. So I'm gonna go way out on a rush. I'm not going to rush, but well, I take it Yes. Now I'll say this As the father of the 3.5 year old. I'd like to know a little bit more about its effects on Children before I you know, that's not contested, contested, but but eventually, yes, when? When? When there's enough evidence. I will absolutely vaccinate myself and my family disappointing to you. When you see Bear got football being disrespected is that Anticipated are they're not going to share money with not a power five conference doesn't hurt Luke Fickell. He just signed his son out of Mueller to come to use trajectory. This conversation by the way, we go from Sonny Gray to the vaccine toe. Luke Fickell. I like this. Yeah, Well, what do you think? What do you think, Um Am I disappointed? Yeah, Of course. Your team goes undefeated, and they've got to think game on Saturday night against Tulsa. Your team goes undefeated. You like to think that your team could compete for a national championship, But I'm aware of how the system works. It didn't work in UCS favor in back to back years. 2017 2018 You see, I've got a chance to play schools from power five leagues in the regular season and they were still on the outside looking in. It's not like they were fifth. One year they were ranked eighth one year their rank 12. So I get how this works, and it doesn't bother me. This is the system, whether we like it or not, now, I'm okay with that. What I'm not okay with is the people who run this thing continually telling. Folks like me who root for schools outside the power 50. It's a fair system. Your team can make it well. Let's look at what happened on Tuesday night. Five teams of the top six did not play this week. None of them paid for it. Ohio State didn't play They didn't drop out of the Time Warner Ohio State in they want e don't have an issue with that Iowa State didn't play this weekend. Did I was state dropped? No, they went up. Texas, saying them didn't play this weekend. They didn't drop Clemson and Notre Dame didn't play this weekend. They didn't drop. You see them play this weekend, They dropped him. Cincinnati and schools from outside the SEC. Big 12 PAC 12, A CC and big 10 are playing by a different set of rules right. Florida lost on Saturday Ugly to watch bad team at home. The lost to an opponent that was out that was without over a dozen players because of Cove it and they beat him in the swamp, and they lost that game, and they fell one spot. Cincinnati didn't play because the covert didn't play. They fell one spot you You can't present that to me and then say that everybody's playing under the same set of rules or not So again, I I approached every season going All right. Here's what's gonna Here's Who's going to play for the national title Alabama, Clemson and then pick from a group that includes Ohio State and Oklahoma. Maybe like Florida, perhaps and Georgia baby in Notre Dame. That's it. That's it, right. I mean, I could tell you who's gonna be in the top 10 next year. I think I could tell you Basically who's going to be in the college football playoff for the next 5 to 6 years. I get how this works. That doesn't bother me. But don't sell me alive. Don't sell me a lot it has. It doesn't affect at all. How I feel about you Sees football program the job. Luke Fickell has done the players the season they've had and what they can accomplish on Saturday night, But stop with the charade of well, everybody's kind of operating under the same set of rules when clearly there's evidence that we're going to until you go to 18 playoff for maybe even five and then one extra, But even that's not gonna work because Okay. 18 Playoff. Says What either A. They're going to take the best eight. Well, guess what you see is night. Yeah, right. Whatever it is, or they're going to give an automatic bid to a group of five school. What on earth would make you think they're interested in that? That's money. They have to give to a group of five conference and they don't want to do that. The power five leagues control this, so I hear this all the time we get to expand it. Are you sure that that's going to get you see it? Because right now would be Georgia, Texas A and M and maybe in Florida. I don't know again. You see, you have to use their example and again, you see, F was non pandemic year. One year they played Think North Carolina the other year, they played maybe Georgia Tech, not powerhouses, but they get a Lisa. Here We played somebody from the A. C. C. We played somebody from the Power Five league One year UCF was 12. Wealth. One year UCF was eighth, and in both instances there were teams that lost two games ahead of them, right. It's not like they were fifth and barely on the outside looking in, So we've seen how this works. But then don't tell me that it doesn't work this way. Because clearly it does. No, I know. I wish you and yours.

The Fate of College Football's 2020 Season

"Ridden Berg thank you for taking a little bit of time after what is zoom is an incredibly chaotic day to chat with me. GREAT TO BE WITH IT'S A. Very historic and like you said wild and crazy time right now in college football, we figure out whether there'll be a season if there is who way. Adam Ridden Berg is scrambling to cover college football including the big ten. conference. For ESPN. Adam I want to start by rewinding a little bit actually from your perspective. What last week looked like because as a Friday, it kind of looked like we were GonNa have some college football. There was this path moving forward on that front and so if you had to make a chart. Of how things stood last week of who is in who is out who was on the fence for actually playing college football what would that chart have looked like? It's like an optimistic chart going back to two marsh but certainly even last week I still felt fairly optimistic about the possibility of a season. We had Yukon that announced on Wednesday that they weren't gonNA, play but they're independent. They're not connected to these television contracts like others are even these these group of five. Leagues. And then Thursday into Friday. He was hearing from sources around the sport that, Hey, this Mac meeting that was on Saturday in the mid American conference that was to be significant. That, there was a chance that at least one school was not going to play and others might be in the same boat and the whole league might decide at that point to postpone the fall season and football. It Yo it became clear that we were heading a lot closer to a you know a national postponement or at least a large groups of the College Football Leagues deciding not to play this fall. And so Adam you and I are talking at about six Oh five pm eastern time right now on a Monday so. What happened today and it will I guess what was the first thing that happened today on your feet? Well, again a lot we reported ESPN and others that the the big ten presidents were strongly leaning towards postponing that was on Sunday, and then you're the news that broke overnight was significant that this crash tag we WANNA play movement From Trevor Lawrence of Clemson and Justin fields of Ohio state. Some of the most prominent players in college football were getting real traction I mean this is your became the number one trending topic on twitter for a little while that was sort of the big story overnight and then today it's just monitoring. You know what's going on in the big ten. There's been reports that they've already canceled. That's not a at least as this recording that's not true. The Mountain West. Late, this afternoon did decide to postpone their seasons. So that's the second FBI's conference after the men American to decide not to play football and other sports this year. and You specifically cover the big ten that's your beat, and that's the conference. Everyone seems to be waiting to see what move comes next. So what exactly as we speak now is happening with the big ten this evening. Right. So it appears that the athletic directors are or speaking that's not a huge deal because they talking all the time now in the League but th, there's a sense of when they'll be a formal vote among presidents that hasn't taken place. I haven't heard from many sources that vote among presidents it's imminent but in theory I, it wouldn't take very long for that to take place if the League was ready to move forward with the postponement. So I think the discussions now are regarding timing whether some of the positions have changed around the conference. You've had a number of prominent coaches speak out about their desire to have. A season the big ten Pablo has always been a league. I I've covered it for a number of years that's been largely unified on the big topics and I can't remember a time where you've had a group of presidents that seem ready to postpone for the most part. But then you have many others loud voices in the league like the coaches like the players saying this isn't right. You can't do this. This is a wrong thing to do at this point and so that that's that's a unique spot for a conference has always prided itself on your equal revenue sharing and you're trying to be unified in its messaging.

But with conference on ly schedules becoming prevalent this fall, the Richmond Times Dispatch reports they could be eligible for the A. C C championship. "A look at college football. Now what's gonna happen in there? Cove It is shortened season be K is here with sports. Yeah, a day after the Ivy League postponed its fall sports until 2021 Big 10 announced on Thursday that they were canceling all non conference football games. And the expectation is that the 14 member schools will likely play 10 conference games each Now all eyes are on the other four power five leagues. Rumor has it the Pac 12 and a CC are likely to follow suit, so that would certainly put the Rocky Mountains showdown between See UNC issue in jeopardy of being played Labour Day weekend. Rocky's outfielder Charlie Blackmon remains in Georgia because of a positive cove in 19 tests and yesterday measure, But black couldn't offer much insight into the outfielders condition or when he'll be back in Denver because of hippo laws. Yesterday, the Broncos signed its third partnership deal with a gambling entity, this time with Bette GM to open a betting lounge inside and power field of Mile high. So you can add that to the partnerships with BET Fred and fan doing. The Broncos have now been the first team in the league to make not one, not two, but three gambling agreements. No other teams have yet to make one. "I do WanNa flip the page to Rica's point some teams. That have worked very hard to get to this point. We've got eleven teams. Charlie that have punched their ticket so far to go dancing any surprises for you in the ache you I think we have one out. West correct so In the last couple of days of the West Coast Conference Tournament Portland is your winner. And they will now go to the tournament. they upset didn't zag in the semifinals and they will catch a little bit of. Portland's game yesterday in the championship when I flew into Vegas and they're upset of of Gonzaga disrupted. That's the surprise. It's SORTA disrupted the bubble a little bit because when you when you take it to my Portland who was not going to make it as an at large but Gonzaga certainly is well now the WC goes from having one team in the field to two teams in the field. Well he can only still sixty four teams so someone has to come out of the field to accommodate Portland's entrance and that affects the at large teams on the bubble and in the case of my bracket that not Boston College. Back out of the field. Who just a day earlier had slid into the field because there was another loss by someone else so everything with this in the championship weeks at circumstances everything affects something else because it's a numbers game. It's a sixty fourteen field no matter how you slice it so going forward and these next few days. We've got some other tournaments that could affect that in the same way and I mentioned this going back a week or so ago that their watch out for the bids steelers because there are certain mid majors that we know we're going to be in the field. They've earned the right to be in. The field is at large teams if they don't also go in there if they don't go in AH automatic qualifiers by winning their tournament. Well then that's an extra team that we didn't account for and brackets and that's an extra team now that the committee has to put into the field. That's one less team that can make it from some of these bubble team. So yeah the the big upset so far has been in the West Coast Conference in Gonzaga. Not Winning it and we've got some more to look forward to. The MAC happens to be one of those tournaments where there's not going to be. Any fans will central Michigan won the league pretty decisively. This year is a top twenty. Rpi team and most assuredly will make the field but now that tournament played before no one could be one of those that affects how the bubble teams go to central Michigan. Does it also come on? Come out on top in the tournament So that's that's certainly one for fans to watch as we go forward and you're GONNA have to watch it on TV because you're not gonna be able to buy it you're watching on TV though you will hear my voice. I'm on the call on Saturday for the championship. And the more reason to tune in now on the game and you can't get into the arena so the ratings should be sky high. Now it's via going okay. So I want to over to the big twelve. Charlie would where I know actually had a chance to call some big twelve games this year and I know. Tcu In particular was a team that was really making a push. I believe there in the field as it stands right now but I was state actually Jones. Who's a certified buck gator? They upset Baylor over the weekend which was a huge deal. I did a double take when I got the alert. Baylor is bailer their legitimacy. It probably doesn't change anything for them. But what does it do for Iowa State? Well I always stayed. I had as a tendency leading into that game and and it pushed him to a nine. And what that does is it's security. It's cushion because of the ten seed. Maybe the committee views them a little differently. Not Quite not quite at that level so that he's talking about eleven seed. Well that's a vulnerable team to some of the upset potential. We just talked about so what that win for Iowa State. I think is put to rest any question that they'd be in the field although I think there was a big one anyway but it but it certainly nails it down and they no longer would have. I don't think any anxious moments watching the selection show on Monday Now it's just GonNa be a matter of where do they go? And whom do they play? But I think that's what did for for I would say for sure and it would what it did do for. Baylor though while not it's not gonNA knock him out of a one seed it. Does maybe raise some questions. I personally didn't think that there was anything to worry about with. Frankly there weren't a lot of flaws there but the big twelve not not one of the better leagues in the country this year of the power. Five Leagues I think it's probably fifth and they haven't been severely tested in a while and I always say certainly did that and the it might raise some question marks about Baylor going forward. I think they can answer any of those questions in the big twelve tournament because I was sneaking suspicion. They're going to come out with a little extra in that game and it could be ugly for the other. Big Twelve teams In the big twelve tournament but that said it does it. It shows little vulnerability that I didn't think Baylor had and that makes it a little more intrigued when we get to the tournament. Time itself I agree with you one hundred percent. I know look at the box. Were trying to figure out what the deal was. And nothing really was like crazy glaring. But I do think you're right. I know a ton of folks are going to be studying that tape to see what I was able to do right well that was able to watch some of that game and when I did was really slow the Temple. They hope to threes in the second half. They made more threes than they made. Twos in the game and the believer and it was and it was so slow paced and Baylor never found a rhythm that they they say clog everything inside the Lauren Cox had almost no room to move it. Kinda dared the Baylor shooters to shoot and they just had one of those games where they weren't making shots so maybe at least down a blueprint for some other teams as to how to at least approach Valer Ago You mentioned as an example Yukon being a number two seed and I know over the past few years you have seen to have had all these regional conferences in such a favorable area. I think at the Albany region that they mostly have been seated but this year they would be projected number two in the Portland region and I think as much as we talk about Yukon not being the same Yukon is as pass. There's still a very good basketball team. Won thirty nine. Oh in their conference over these last few years in the American and I think that having them with the possibility of travel really makes this team look a little different because they aren't the same team as years pass. Tell us a little bit about how that could affect their performance. Assuming they make the sweet sixteen you're right and Seven out of the last eight years. They've either played in Albany. Bridge for for Kingston Rhode Island. So they they have not had to get on an airplane until the final four in seven out of those those eight years. But let's let's be honest earned it ju- every one of those years with the possible exception of last year because they were the best team in the country in those years too so and when when cities bid for these regionals it just so happened that that all those years those particular low cows bid and got regionals to be able to host. And you can't happen to be close so this year. Those regionals are don't exist. There is no Albany. There is no Kingston. There is no bridgeport and no matter what was going to have to get on an airplane. And you're right. I think it will look a little bit. Different seeing a yukon in a faraway place. I don't think it's going to impact on the whole Locke. Though to be honest I think the people that are bothered by the possibility of uconn going West are the players and the coaching staff. Everything I've heard from them is like. Hey we'll bring it on. We'll play wherever we'll play whomever we'RE NOT THAT CONCERNED ABOUT. Gino's been been pretty adamantly over the years but this year when the subject's soon kinda shrug your shoulders. Look I you know. I don't have any control over it and we'll go play and it will do what we do and I think he said the other night after the the American championship game. We'll do what we do. I hope I think That's sort of the philosophy that they're gonNA take me. Maybe their fans aren't happy and maybe people who who look at the tournament and see certain things as they view them. Unfair that a team that is fifth overall. My take would be the one that has to travel. Based on the fact that other teams can can drive to the region. So we'll get into the reason why you would be going to Portland is very simply that The NC Double A. Would prefer as much as possible that teams that can drive rather than fly two games that they're gonNA play It's written right in the procedures principles of putting the bracket together that mode of transportation distance from campus. Things that they consider will this year Louisville can drive the Fort Wayne Regional? Nc State can drive to the Greenville regional. So if you assume that those are those are two of the other number number two seeds. Then they're going to be plotted in those regions and then the other one being Stanford and Stanford mashed up with Oregon would would also violate one of the principles of putting the bracket together and they They try to keep teams seeded on the top four lines from the same conference separate. So they're so they're in different regions. They wouldn't even meet until the final four now. In this case the fact twelve might have five teams in top sixteen making that impossible but in years past when that's happened the committee's not put one a one and a two. They've put fit when a four again. So it's highly highly unlikely that Oregon at Stanford Movie Place Together which only leaves one region left for Yukon to go to which is Portland matched up with. Oregon is the one in the two. So that's the why behind it and I think we talked about the the what or in the case of I think the Yukon players coaches the. So what I don't know that they that it matters to them very much but it does create an interesting conversation around how the tournament is bracketed. And some of these rules. That maybe fans aren't quite as aware of in the the head-scratching that I get from from fans and social media. Say Well if you cons five. They should be matched up with the number four overall team based on the curve. And that's Maryland so they should be going to Fort Wayne. Well we don't ever. The S curve is used to plot the teams in the tournament. But it's not used strictly to place them in these numerical matchups one in eight go together. Two and seven go together. It's never worked that way. It doesn't work that way in the men's tournament. The committee will try to do that as much as possible. That's the goal. But if you've got these graphical instances at hand as well then there there's other ways to balance the bracket and. That's I think what's going to happen. This year with

"Our broadcast position in Pittsburgh this is the dragons in our cardinal basketball network studios were still more than of what thirty five minutes or longer from tip off time so got plenty of time to try and reconnect you this time however we would like to be bring you the comments of head coach Chris Mack and we're endeavoring to do that as well on the ox more auto group cardinal Colin coach mac is second go around in the ACC and his second time try trying to beat Pittsburgh on the other hand there's home court which is Paul Rodgers mentioned a level is played very well there over the last decade or so but came up with a game last year they just could not handle the Pittsburgh guards and ended up losing and that was shortly before they went down to North Carolina and played the best game of the season thrashing of good North Carolina team so they just know really way to figure out the way things are going out we we talked about the Atlantic coast conference and and the scheduling the fact that already tonight we'll we'll have complete home homes against both Miami and Pittsburgh if you look at the list of fifteen teams in the Americas conference you know if you get discouraged if you get off to a poor start like North Carolina has losing the four out of five or even North Carolina state which is lost three of its first five and do remains the only undefeated team in the conference with the five league wins then you've got both local and Florida stated foreign one a Florida state has a tough game coming up tomorrow night against Virginia and talk about the Virginia Cavaliers they've lost two of their first five so they're struggling to regain the one form they've had the last couple of years and so the cardinals with a chance to win tonight to get to five and one would be the high point of the early season and I think I think we're ready we're ready to we can take a break we had given over to Paul that solve all we need to know at this point I think we're ready okay let's take a time out in the back we'll hear from coach Chris Mack as we continue with a card to call and after this this is Carla basketball from Learfield IMG college women.

"Set these is the business of sports from Bloomberg radio with scouts ashik Michael Barr and Evan nobody well yeah thanks for joining us and let's continue our conversation with Michael resco he's the commissioner of the American athletic conference known as the AC he held the position for more than seven years during which time he has overseen a strategic reinvention of the conference also under his leadership the AAC has won a handful of NCAA championships Mike your former TV executive how has that experience help you win a heading up the AC why I think it it certainly helped in the TV negotiations which were critical to the future of our league obviously knowing the players you know having relationships with with ESPN one of my former employers and also CBS with the dealing with Burke Magnus room yard known for thirty years or more knowing knowing you know where the you know where the pressure points would be in the TV negotiations I think that's been obviously very critical and and Tom objection and I've been in in TV media for a long time Tom worked at ESPN for number years he's been the our our TV guy here at the conference in those negotiations you know obviously experiences is really important so that that that's one area in in getting the original deal done and getting the exposure we got for the conference I think was probably it was probably help by my media background edition just yeah we having been in the media you know do doing a lot of interviews doing doing all sorts of things I've been able I think to to at least brand the conference of the P. six campaign has been really important and you know you get a feel for it this is a media driven world I think being in TV all those years also I don't with the college community for all those years you know I was involved in college football basketball on an Olympic sports involved in NCAA sports you know obviously you know schedule the NCA tournament for CBS those experiences were really invaluable in terms of developing relationships the which have really helped I think in the conference often again we've got a long way to go but those those kinds of things certainly help inform my judgment about how this conference needed to be perceived my before we let you go I want to ask you I know for a while there were discussions about a potential group of five playoff maybe within you know your own five leagues you know this year the idea of maybe a twelve and one Boise state playing on an eleven and one Memphis seems like it would be a a pretty popular item for a TV network to broadcast where those discussions right now do you think that is likely to happen in a are you in favor of that are you against it another there's never been any discussions it's just been a media thing we are opposed to it we have zero interest we have less than zero interest we have less than less than zero interest in ways that you just don't want to fully separate yourself from the others I mean obviously you don't feel like that's warranted but exactly what we're moving the other direction the we're moving toward the P. five we think we're going to be a P. six eventually we they can't they can't stop us eventually because we've got you Jules like you see happen and use U. S. after they're building their brands we got big schools like Cincinnati and east Carolina and Memphis and and you know we've got schools and great markets like SMU and obviously we've got Houston and all the stuff that we're going to get there we this is a New World it's it's not the world of thirty years ago which with with the TV that kind of exposure we get Memphis may have for A. B. C. appearances this year think about that four games on ABC with better championship on ABC for five three years the last thing we would ever do is move in the opposite direction and basically brand ourselves as as a separate division you know we're F. S. B. S. and and everyone's F. B. S. or ten FPS conferences the problem we've got is is G. five business it's a rule for us because it is branding but the minute we if we would ever agree to something like that then we would be a JB deal we would be in some kind of separate division where we play for separate championships far as I'm concerned down the road look you see I should have been should have a shot at the national championship in two thousand seventeen I believe they could have won are you you can't believe how many guys from that team are in the NFL now whether she keen Griffin you know whether a stray Kwan Smith what is your neck and you go up and down the less terms of players from that team and they could beat anybody that year they were that good you saw when they beat Auburn in the bowl game the other thing is we've had teams that they could compete Houston clearly in two thousand sixteen and they take care of business in the conference with their two JYJ wins over Oklahoma Louisville would've been knocking on the playoff door the last thing we whatever doing this conference is go backwards and be calm yelled cemented as as some kind of G. five inferior secondary championship not a chance we would ever do it I'm so old you say Houston I think of David Klingler amount I mean all you got everything his old yeah I mean I cancer like six hundred yards a game but I'm at the take away from me and we do this you know is that they can't stop it so that's shot across the bow with the SEC the big twelve the big ten the ABC is coming for you they want the big six Mike arrest go commissioner of the American athletic conference thank you very much for taking sometime Hey thanks bells happy thanksgiving to all giving to you to see what I got a lot to say and I see why he's he's all worked up but his experience when he was a big time TV executive has carried over to the AC AC and it is up to mount tremendously and at least trying to get you know the the games on television and but there's a long way to go if you talk to one of our had we known it was going to go that way I would have said let's save our number for the week which is still coming for like the number of seconds between breaths Mike went while making a payment I mean how many scores in teams did he remember of dating back the number of years it was pretty impressive temple and and you see a cycle of Pedic I think if you ask him who did two lane play week fourteen in two thousand fifteen he would he would measure but listen you you have to say that the AC is going to need that sort of push and that sort of passion if they're really going to be considered a power six conference because women a U. S. my friends do you want to see you CF play or do you want to see Auburn play or do you want to see Alabama or do you want to see our kids or whatever they're going to default to the power conferences in big brands that they're familiar with me see on TV every week I think we often say you know branding and marketing matters in some kind of theory away I think Mike is laying out exactly why it matters in a in a hard dollars and cents you know his conferences distribute pennies on the dollar relative to the Big Five in in his opinion and and he certainly had numbers to back it up at least enough on the football side of things the big money maker that there's not much difference between him and some of the other power fives you know so this idea of him being kind of stuck out as being bigger and then probably better on the field than the other group of five schools but maybe not quite at the level of the power five that's been a real a real detriment to his colleges and his his schools in this country I want to see if they get that guarantee we need that guarantee on new year's day he's clearly gonna fight yeah a nail for and he he has the information in his head already and I'm sure in down as well to to advocate for it but yes I mean that would go a massive massive wave for them it's just a matter of can he be persuasive enough to make that happen no one is better to be number one the number five my work number because my we have a chance to go for three in a row his numbers of your time press for the number.

say that we need eighteen balco Clairol's in two years he also able someone did not it got screwed it should be in the playoffs right we should expanded sixty then they'll be the thirty two there's nobody to sixty four it it it it never ending hi do you think you open it you open that up and then everybody's going to complain you're gonna want more here's what I think when you look at the college football playoff the success they're having all the angst to do it in the first place and now you got the semi finals the the four teams and what's happening is a lot of times these these games are rated so high some of the highest games in cable television history so I think if that continues that way thanks for the call that the college football the college football playoff they're just they're frothing at the mouth for that reason alone using that as a compelling reason why if people want to watch it we want to give it to them because we're gonna make money people are watching let's do it I mean listen you make a poll are you make a point that at some point you would have to stop it and you wouldn't want to turn it into explode it like college basketball but and see how it turns into that there there is a problem with the fourteen for format though there's always going to be a team from the power five leagues is going to be left out in the cold and they're bitter and angry about it we're hearing it in some of the calls but if you just expanded then you stop it at eight and that's where I think that you would end up Jason in Atlanta your thoughts on the playoffs expanding appreciate for taking my call it has to be expanded I just can't understand you people keep saying it doesn't need to be expanded a almost the only to be fourteen what you just said earlier it's five power cope with that's ridiculous at the end of second notion of well it's not enough time to do it the whole division to I went with a visit to come out they've been doing playoff they had you don't open the door like who because then I then I I I had with football I I don't see I see there's a little bit of a comparison problem with that but I do agree it needs to be expanded because of what I just said the power five leagues is ridiculous because then someone's left out no matter what but you can't have it with every conference because then I think it would then deluded to much there needs it needs to be a little bit higher it in other words it needs to be it still needs to be a little bit different when you're talking about college football versus college hoop in and and of Arkansas fires coach Mike Anderson and Houston's Kelvin Sampson could be a potential candidate

"Thoughts on Arkansas in general because the AD now at Arkansas was the eighty that hired Kelvin Sampson to Houston. My opinions this I'm not sold that that Kelvin Sampson is leaving Houston for console. It can happen. But I don't think that that is as much of a sure thing as if you're a type of person that follows the coaching carousel like as the stuff at breaking your kind of a college hoops junkie. I think it's definitely on the table. But I'm at this stage. I'm not totally convinced that Samson's Lieven h down for Arkansas. The only thing that Arkansas can do to convince him is just make incredible amounts of money. Just put incredible amounts of money on the table. These SEC's schools have so much money. Now, if they wanna pay a basketball coach five million dollars a year, they can remember a few years ago, Alabama like put an open check on the table for Gregg Marshall, and we're willing to pay him whatever they needed to pay him. He just didn't want to go coach there, but it wasn't a money deal. So Arkansas can put real difference making money in front of Kelvin and maybe get him to jump, but what he has to figure out and this is reasonable minds can disagree on this. But what he has to figure out is do you wanna go be at a middle of the pack job in a power five league. Or do you wanna have one of the better jobs in a top seven leak? You know, you you you he's already shown and by the way, I think he'd win it, Arkansas. The guys wanna everywhere he's been his career is really amazing. He was obviously. You know, I it starts at Montana tech. And he went back to back league titles there then goes to Washington state alternately gets them to an inside of light tournament bounces to Oklahoma goes to one two three four five six seven eight nine straight in CWA tournaments, including a final four, then he eventually bounces to Indiana. And you know, he had Indiana twenty two and four overall eleven to in the big ten when he got fired for the NCAA violation stuff. But if he were allowed to keep that job he would have been rocking and rolling at that job for a while again. I mean, he had Eric quickly came in recruited got Eric, Gordon. And then he's got him off to an amazing start. They were ranked fifteenth in the country at the time when he got fired than Dan dockage took it over and went three and four in the final seven games as interim coach just drove it straight into the ground, but Kelvin Sampson handed him a great team. And there's no reason to think that team that program wouldn't continue to operate at high level had he stayed there.
