Twenty-Five Years Later, Ford Resurrects the Bronco
"If you're an offroad aficionado or even just WANNA be. This story is a big deal. After a quarter century Ford is resurrecting the Ford Bronco a direct rival to the jeep. Ford produce the Bronco for thirty straight years starting in nineteen, sixty six. The vehicle had only two doors reportedly one reason why Ford discontinued it in Nineteen ninety-six consumer sentiment was shifting toward four doors. Historians say the Bronco Developed Cult Status. After it was discontinued today, the beefy muscular vehicles, a sentimental favourite restored vintage models can sell for up to two hundred thousand dollars with a corporate unit called Ford icons. Ford is Heavily Marketing Nostalgia that division includes the Bronco, a Mustang and a new line of Ford F one fifty pick-up trucks, including a hybrid version, and soon to be debuted all electric. And Nostalgia sells, but it's far from the only reason. The automakers releasing a Bronco for the twenty first century. The company is capitalizing on a trend according to the automaker offroad vehicle, so called rugged SUV's. Twice, as popular as regular SUV's CNN reports that has engineered the new bronco models for quote hard off road driving. You know the kind that allows you to quote. Get far from civilization. An even stay there for awhile. Is the perfect escape for pandemic induced cabin fever. Get a dose of Adrenalin while avoiding the plague. It's a combination made for advertising. Heaven Kit needs to be the jeep wrangler as the Juggernaut of off road vehicles. CNBC reports that automakers have been trying to quote dethrone the Wrangler for decades. Without much success. Even during the pandemic GPS kept selling Fiat Chrysler sold an average of seventeen thousand jeep wrangler every month for the last five years according to the Detroit news last year, almost a quarter, million wrangler flew off dealership. Lots and experts say jeep owners are loyal. To a fault. Still Ford executives have moxie. They're predicting sales of two hundred thousand broncos over the next year, according to Automotive News. and. Keep in mind that the low end version of the new line. The broncos sport won't even be out until years end higher end versions of the Bronco won't be at dealerships until next spring. Ford is doing everything it can to make the Bronco enticing enough to away jeep lovers, and of course to persuade new off roaders to come into the Ford camp that includes besting the ramblers largest tires thirty three inches with whopping thirty five inch tires, Ford says a Bronco outfitted with the almost three foot in diameter tires can easily go through a couple of feet of water models also come with removable roofs and doors. Drivers can store the doors in the Bronco. For, it says. At about thirty thousand dollars, the price of the two door base Bronco comes in at only two hundred dollars more than the base price of the jeep wrangler at the top in a limited number of first edition for door Bronco started about sixty one thousand dollars, Ford began taking one hundred dollar deposits on Broncos last Monday when it released the new line I edition reservation slots sold out within a couple of hours. Still as bullish as the auto press is about the Broncos, the release comes against bleak backdrop for the auto industry. Overall vehicle sales plummeted when covid nineteen emerged shut the industry down for two months recently, both Ford and GM reported second-quarter sales declines of about thirty three percent from a year earlier jeep parent, Fiat Chrysler did even worse with sales down forty percent. And that puts a lot of pressure on Ford to live up to its promise of adding a billion dollars to the bottom line next year through Bronco Sales. And it adds pressure Chrysler to keep jeep at the top of the OFFROAD HEAP Stakes is high as the boulder strewn rocky mountains. The war between Bronco in gene. We'll be fascinating to watch.

Does TV Resolution Matter?
"When we're talking about TV, we're talking about one big thing. Resolution Sharper Images, Crisper Action, immaculate detail in everything from sports to documentaries to video games in just a few years. We've seen the race move from seven twenty to ten eighty P, two four K. and beyond, and this brings us to today's question. Does TV resolution matter spoiler alert? The answer is yes absolutely or maybe a better way to say it is yes, absolutely, but with a footnote before we get to all the weird stuff that footnote represents. Represents! We need to understand resolution itself. Resolution starts with the Pixel. A Pixel is the smallest possible unit of a digital image, a single point of light when you hear manufacturers top about resolution there, describing the number of pixels on a given screen, so an old school cathode Ray, TV would display the equivalent of three hundred thousand pixels on screen while an HDTV could pack more than two million pixels into a screen. The STANDARD WAY FOR TV makers to classify resolution is with numbers followed by a letter. The numbers indicate the. The rows of horizontal pixels so think four eighty, I ten eighty P, and so on the bigger the number, the more pixels on the screen, the letters at the end of the numbers stand for I is interlaced and P for Progressive Scan. The differences are important, but fairly complicated, so let's save that one for another day. Using more pixels to create an image creates a smoother, less blocking or pixelated image, so at first glance it sounds as if more pixels equal a better experience, right not so fast slick. Here's where our footnote. Footnote comes in Pixel. Density itself is not the only factor in the race toward a better sharper image. If we're looking at resolution as the ability to discern fine details, several other factors come into play for instance. What's the source of the image? What role does color play? How close or far are you from the screen? And how big is the screen for example? If you're watching a small screen, say twenty six inches from ten or more feet away. Your I won't be able to tell the difference between anything from four. Four eighty two four K., the farther you are away from the image source, the smoother the picture appears as for the size of the screen. Well sure you could have a twenty six inch TV with ten eighty line resolution, and it would still have the same number of pixels as a fifty five inch, TV with otherwise identical specs, but the pixels would be physically smaller so in this context size definitely matters if you put a twenty six inch HDTV with seven twenty line resolution next to another twenty six inch HDTV with ten. Ten Eighty, you may not be able to tell the difference between the two. These are just a few of the pertinent factors in the overall equation. There's another big question here to does the human I have a resolution limit. How many individual pixels can the human I perceive? And that's a tricky question to our eyes are not cameras, instead their an initial step to an intricate process, involving loads of unconscious estimation and guesswork in our brains. It is true that after a certain point, the human eye is unable to differentiate or Or appreciate the differences between some Pixel densities with the right source material equipment and viewing distance four K. really can make a difference for example if you're sitting a few feet from a sixty inch four K. television with an ultra high definition video feed, you'll be able to tell if it suddenly switches to regular hd or brace yourself standard definition, the limits of HDTV a failure of technology. There are limit of our biology, if we can't tell the difference between a lower resolution, twenty six inch TV in an HD version then. Then! There's not much incentive to buy the latest ultra high definition TV set, but this isn't the end of the story. The race for higher resolution continues cameras that shooting four K. have already become the norm and each year bring new innovations. These ultra high definition technologies may not make for a better picture on a home television, but in a movie theater it makes a big difference in the future. We might not care as much about resolution. It's possible that other technologies like high dynamic range may become the next big thing.
You can finally play Maxis' long-lost 'SimRefinery' oil simulator
"Markovic from ars Technica wrote a story about maxis business solutions of course Max is the maker of Sim city created this business solutions in the wake of the success of Simcity to make simulators for business use. Chevron was one of the companies that engaged that division wanted. Max is to make a simulated oil refinery not for training purposes because it just wouldn't be. Safe to do that, but to help. Employees at its Richmond California plant understand how the entire refinery worked to say like. We're not going to train you on every job here, but this gives you a sense of how these jobs are all interdependent, so in Nineteen ninety-two maxis made a prototype game called Sim refinery. Librarian and archivist Phil Salvador tried to find a copy, but it seemed like it was lost forever. He found lots of references, but couldn't find the actual code until an ars technica reader hearing about Salvador's efforts in the Technica. Posted to the comments with an image of Sim refinery on a three point, five inch disk that he said belonged to a retired chemical engineering friend. Poster call themselves. What Are The World's Biggest, Baddest Jigsaw Puzzles?
"Even before. It became a popular way to while away the hours days and weeks during isolation putting together. Jigsaw Puzzles was a favourite family activity. But did you know that? Jigsaw Puzzles have their origin in education. Sir John Spills Berry an English engraver and map maker in the mid. Seventeen hundred is credited with creating the first jigsaw puzzle in seventeen seventy six by attaching a map of the world to a piece of wood then cutting the country's out teachers used the maps to teach geography to their students and a recreational activity was born spills berry would hardly recognize his creation today in the early part of the twentieth century. Jigsaw Puzzles were used as marketing tools often given away or sold for mere pennies today companies. Still use puzzles for creative marketing. Take Kodak for instance. It's selling what it. Claims is the quote world largest jigsaw puzzle. We HAVE TO ADMIT. This thing is pretty huge. The fifty one thousand three hundred piece puzzle features twenty-seven injuries from around the world and when completed measures twenty eight point five feet by six point. Two five feet. That's eight point six meters by one point nine meters and this beast costs more than four hundred dollars but all due respect to the Kodak Jigsaw puzzle. The world's largest jigsaw puzzle by surface area. According to Guinness World Records was put together in Dubai in July of twenty eighteen. The puzzle was an honor of the year of Ziyad a year long tribute to the founding father of the United Arab Emirates. The late Shahid there are more than twelve thousand pieces in the puzzle which was an image of Zayed the official record size measured sixty five thousand nine hundred and five point one seven square feet which is six thousand one hundred twenty two point six eight square meters putting together. Jigsaw puzzles is a Greek group activity but one thousand six hundred students of the University of Economics Ad Hoc Human City in Vietnam took it to the next level. When they completed the jigsaw puzzle with the most pieces on record five hundred fifty one thousand two hundred and thirty two to be exact when it was finished the puzzle measured just over. Forty eight by seventy six feet about fourteen by twenty three meters. It took the students seventeen hours to create the massive puzzle which featured a lotus flower with six petals. But what about the hardest jigsaw puzzle? Ever it contains only nine pieces and it's called the puzzle nine it was designed by Asaka. It includes a small board. The nine pieces include right angles and curved edges. That fit together in several combinations. Think Tetris but way harder. The challenge is getting the last piece to fit. It's nearly impossible to fit all the pieces on the board. It took Chris Ramsey a magician video creator and master puzzle or two hours nine minutes to solve the ice nine and by his own description. He was completely exhausted. By the end of the experience. You Sokha created another equally. Difficult puzzle called the Jigsaw Puzzle. Twenty nine the challenge here is to fit twenty nine pieces into a five by five inch. That's twelve by twelve centimeter trae. It comes with five corner pieces. Just let that sink in. Then there's the largest hand cut wooden jigsaw puzzle Guinness record held by Dave Edmunds England. Who created a forty thousand seven hundred sixty three piece puzzle celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee the puzzle which featured thirty-three Images of Jubilee celebrations was twenty by eight feet? That's six by two and a half meters. When completed though it collapsed soon after Evans completed it took him and force. More than sixteen days to rebuild the puzzle and move at Sandringham where it went on display and was confirmed as the Guinness World record holder. We spoke by email with Caitlin vesper records manager with Guinness World Records North America. She said one of the main criteria for all Guinness World Records titles is that they must be breakable. Every record titled S- monitored is open to being challenged which allows for all kinds of record breaking opportunities all over the world. The Guinness record for most Jigsaw puzzle pieces tattooed on the human body belongs to the aptly named enigma. Sometimes known as Paul Laurence. Who'S A sideshow performer? Actor musician originally from Seattle in two thousand eleven enigmas set the record for having two thousand one hundred twenty three puzzle pieces tattooed on his body from head to toe in no word on whether anyone comes close to second but many puzzle records are held by companies such as the record for the largest spherical jigsaw puzzle. It measured fifteen point seven feet. That's four point. Seven seven meters in circumference and it was made by unit industrial limited in Hong Kong and featured scene from Winnie the Pooh vesper said brands and businesses. Come to US looking to harness the power of record-breaking to commemorate anniversaries and celebrations or to highlight the launch of a new product. Whole communities can come together to attempt to record to a like in March of two thousand nineteen when more than one thousand seven hundred people formed the largest human jigsaw puzzle piece on record a I. The record raised awareness for autism spectrum disorder. The puzzle pieces the symbol for the autismspeaks organization. Vesper explained each Guinness World. Records title has a set of guidelines. That must be followed. The record for the largest human jigsaw puzzle piece is a great example to highlight. This is considered one of our largest human image categories and the idea is to have a group of people gathered together to form a recognizable image. We define a jigsaw puzzle piece as an oddly shaped interlocking and Tessa leading piece designed to be part of a larger picture. The human image to be created would need to be instantly recognizable as a puzzle piece and not an entire puzzle. This record title can be broken if another group creates same image with a larger group of people. Anybody up for the challenge.
Is the Tasmanian Tiger Really Extinct?
"You've no doubt heard of the Tasmanian Devil or seen an animated version the whirling dervish in looney tunes cartoons. But what about the Tasmanian Tiger? It's actually not even a tiger at all instead a marsupial known as the Thilo seen and it's thought to have gone extinct almost one hundred years ago but did it really. While many experts believed the last known thylacine died at. Australia's Hobart Zoo in nineteen thirty. Six others ardently claimed that the animals still exists because they've spotted one or more in the wild. We spoke by email with Kathryn medlock. Honorary Curator of vertebrate zoology the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. She said the international Australian and state definition of an extinct species is that there has been no reliable evidence of the species for fifty years by this definition. They are officially extinct species although designated as officially extinct. It's difficult to prove that something is not there as opposed to proving it is. There are many cases of species being rediscovered. Many years after supposed- extinction we also spoke by email with Rick Schwartz an animal ambassador for California's San Diego Zoo. He explained that quote since the Nineteen Thirties. There have been a few claims Tasmanian. Tigers have been seen for brief moments in the wild however no substantial evidence has proven they exist at this time we also spoke by email with Neil waters of the thylacine awareness group of Australia. Who started disagrees a quote? Do I think the animals extinct? No because I've seen too and been coughed slash barked at by one in South Australia. In two thousand eighteen. There have been more than seven thousand documented sightings of Silas scenes or animals that appear to be Thilo scenes but the majority of those sightings on Mainland Australia. According to the scientific formula applied to mammals though it is extinct and has been since nineteen thirty six for fifty years. The animal was considered rare and endangered. This fact inconveniently keeps the animal as a recent extinction rather than an ancient one. We should lose hope over and forget about. Let's step back a bit. What exactly is Tasmanian. Tiger? Schwartz explained that it's not a big cat at all. He said the name. Tiger most likely was given to the animal by the European settlers due to the light stripes that went from the spine down each side on the hind end of the animal. Most people agree that the Tasmanian Tiger looks like a medium sized short haired dog with subtle stripes on hindquarters and the base of its tail. Tail was thick and muscular at the base. More like a kangaroo's tail than a dog's tail colorations were described as light brown and Yellow Brown with Darker Brown stripes. These animals weighed about forty five to seventy pounds. That's twenty to thirty kilos with a body length of forty to fifty inches or one hundred to one hundred and twenty five centimeters with that tail. Adding another twenty to twenty five inches or fifty to sixty centimeters most stood about two feet tall or two thirds of a meter at the shoulder. Schwartz said in our modern times we usually think of marsupials and Kangaroos however the Tasmanian Tiger had a number of unique characteristics being dog like medium sized carnivore. That's also Marsupial it. Size and features were more similar to that of a small wolf or large Fox. Combine that with the striped pattern on the hind end and thick muscular tail. Similar toy kangaroo. You've got a pretty unique animal and water said when you had a close look at the prince we find. You will see time and time again. The broad S- play of the toes and the Claude drag impressions from the massive fixed clause on the animals four feet. The reason they're split wide and not like a dog is because they don't have webbing between their toes their front feet also still acts similar to hands as they can both hop like a kangaroo or run on all fours as a result many of the prince appear that the front feet are literally grabbing the ground as they dig it on curves or high speed when pursuing prey when Europeans first colonized Australia. The Tasmanian Tiger was rarely seen the animals started to become increasingly blamed for tax on cheap however so private companies and the Tasmanian government attempted to curb population by establishing bounties exchange for dead violence scenes adding to their eventual extinction was the sad fact that Australia's colonisation eroded the thylacines habitat by the nineteen twenty s sightings of the Tasmanian Tiger in the wild became extremely rare and in nineteen thirty. A farmer shot and killed the second. To last known wild Tasmanian Tiger the final by Lesean was captured in the Florentine Valley in Nineteen thirty three and transferred to the Hobart Zoo on September seventh. Nineteen thirty six. The animal known as Benjamin died in captivity black and white footage recorded in nineteen thirty three would become historically significant as images of the final scene in nineteen thirty seven the Tasmanian animals and birds protection board a later to become the national park. Service launched a series to determine where thylacines still might be found. Medlock said unfortunately living animal was not discovered. The final search in the series was into the chain river area in Western. Tasmania on the search. Sometimes seen footprints were discovered and creek bed. The original plaster casts of these prints are lodged in the Tasmanian Museum. The Tasmanian Museum doesn't receive citing reports. And we don't have the expertise to assess them. This is done by the Department of Primary Industries Water and environment they continue to record reported sightings and take them seriously often however sightings films and photographs are released to the media through the people who are reporting them rather than a government body over the years. There have been several instances photographs and films purported to be thylacines in the wild but none have been verified as genuine evidence of an animal waters however contends that there have been dozens of credible sightings of Thilo scenes. He said actually hundreds of them too many to name one in particular was a bus load of tourists in Western Australia. Back in the nineteen eighties. Who All saw the animal at close range in broad daylight whilst on a wildflower tour the fact that we find headless Kangaroos. All over. His failure is a key piece of physical evidence that these animals still persist. But nobody to know about it. Because it's always blamed on either hunters or Satanists by. Ill informed people who don't understand how these animals feed waters has been working tirelessly to raise public awareness of this animals continued existence for the past five years meeting dozens of witnesses and collecting thousands of statements regarding sightings of this animal in. Tasmania and across mainland Australia. His work appears in the two thousand seventeen documentary living the thylacine dream which follows waters travels throughout mainland Australia. Collect evidence of predation as well as stories of sightings from witnesses who are adamant seen the thile seen both recently and historically

Jeff more on a tribally owned beach across the sound from Seattle to areas famous for all sorts of seafood especially shellfish oysters and gooey ducks and course clams that we have different types of clams here. We have the the native little neck clams and we have an introduced Manila clam. That's very similar to the little neck. But it's from Asia originally and of course there's The star of today's show cockles which we actually couldn't see so they like to live in the lower intertidal zone and then the subtitle. Apparently there are more cockles. Living under the water than on the beach for those of you who are not up on their whole tidal geography. The Inter title is that part you see at the beach. The wet sand that gets exposed as the tide is going out. The subtitle is under shallow water almost all the time. It's that sliver of sand that only gives exposed at super low tides. Like when there's a full moon and so to get to the cockles in that subtitle's zone Vivian. And Jeff have to wait until the tide is at. It's very very lowest point this time of year. That's around three. A M which is go at night we harvest at night. Yeah we were out there during the day but fortunately there were some cockle shells available on the beach as visually. They see a cockle there. Jeff grab it. Yeah they're weathered but there you can see they look like those ripple chips. They're they're ribbed. They have these long ribs. Come down longitude only. This is what you would see when you're looking in the garden. Cockle shells right from the nursery room round more. Like a ball shape. The Long Ribs Jeff is describing on the shell. It's those same lines in the cockleshell flowers that give the flowers their name. If you've never seen a cockleshell and frankly I hadn't as Jeff said you might know them better from nursery RHYMES MARY. Mary quite contrary. How does your garden grow with silver bells and cockle shells and pretty maids all in a row? No one knows exactly what that means. There's a theory that Mary as Mary. Queen of Scots and the cockle shells are somehow Catholic. But yeah no one knows. And then there's another old English rhyme. I knew as a Kid. It was actually a jump rope song for me. Blue Bells cockle shells a vans British rhyme. So they would have been talking about the different species at cockle. The common cockle as it's called which you find in the UK and Ireland Portugal and all down the Atlantic coast. Morocco cockles have long been a popular food in all these countries. Just one of the many shellfish people enjoyed you might have heard the Irish Song Molly Malone where she selling cockles in the streets of Dublin. We streets gone in the UK. Coco's used to be a pretty common seaside treat. You'd often buy them boiled served in a paper cone and sprinkled with Malt Vinegar. They were popular in the east end of London. And especially in Wales but today those kinds of traditional shellfish like welk's and winkles and cockles. They've become less and less popular. But while cockles are no longer common snacks in seaside towns. They are still actually harvested all along the coast of the UK. They're shipped overnight to elsewhere in Europe like France and the Netherlands where cockles are still popular law of blazes in the UK. That harvesting is still done by hand using cocoa rake. It can be really dangerous work if you get caught by the tide but while we were researching this episode we discovered off the coast of Norfolk. They've developed an ingenious technique that involves driving boats around in circles. This is from a channel four documentary about calls three to four minutes. Yes that's the war talk. The boat's propeller push the sentiment in these re off. Would you use the boat? Wash all the sideway basically There's yet another species of cockle that's widespread in Asia. In Japan. There's a popular cockles Sushi. That's available only one month a year but in a lot of places. Kaka leading has really fallen off. The shelves are hard to open. And especially these European cockles. There's only a tiny bit of meat. Once you do manage to pry them apart but west coast cockles like we said there are different species and they are most decidedly not dainty little things. They're actually quite hefty. They probably can get about a good four inches four five inches. They can get fairly large and heavy in terms of like maybe a schoolboy size little apple so cockles are bigger than clams but there are unusual in another way to most shellfish like the little neck clams in the Manila clams covered the beach. We were on their pretty stationary and when they settle from larvae to an adult they basically dig themselves in and stay in the same place for the rest of their lives but cockles. They are not quite so sedentary. These cockles have a really heavy and strong foot and they're very mobile so they can escape. They're predators by just jumping away from them this jump. It's not just a little hub. This is a full-on leap leap leap away. So one of the Faster Sea Stars is the Sun Star Picnic. Odia helium authorities. These sunflower seeds. Stars are freaky looking. They range in color from bright orange to purple. They get to more than three feet wide. And they have up to twenty four arms covered in suckers and they love to use those suckers to pull apart the two halves of cockleshell and then they chomped down on the flash. They can sense when the sea star is trying to get a hold of him in a foot to just kick away and they can jump off. We're talking we're talking mostly sideways. And then the kind of kick away and SORTA roll along to get away so at a time but enough to get away from a sea star and as long as there have been people living along puget sound. They've been eating those leaping cockles over ten thousand years. I don't know I mean bivalves have been around for you. Know millions of years in the ocean and the tribes have been around these waters. For at least I think the archaeological record say at least fourteen thousand years by all accounts cockles are one hundred percent delicious and a favorite food of the first nations people in the area so they will build a large fire with rocks so the rocks become very hot and they will put the shellfish right the rocks and cover them with seaweed so they basically steam in their own juices. It's over an open flame and it's yeah the the way they've been doing it for forever so it's they've perfected the art they're good. They're really sweet. Really sweet and kind of a rich kind of seafood taste little chewier a little bit meaty so they compared to other clans. I would say there's more richness in the
The Myth of Quarterback Hand Size
"So let's talk some measurements. That's what went down today. The consensus number one overall pick Joe. Pearls hand sized came in at nine inches. Listen to this. The last quarterback that man that small drafted first overall was jared. Goff BACK IN TWO THOUSAND SIXTEEN GUYS. So that's some comparison it's annual. Nfl tradition every year were introduced to the incoming class of rookie quarterbacks. And we're told that a single measurement matters hand size but what if the metric is totally meaningless as the NFL combine unfolds in Indianapolis we investigate the connection between big hands and big production and ask whether Scouts are chasing a myth. I mean it's Tuesday February twenty fifth this is espn daily presented by ADT. Dave I was very self-conscious reading this piece because I don't know if you know this about me but I have tiny tiny hands. I have gigantic cans. Do you See come on tiny baby hands. Dave Flemming is a senior writer for. Espn his report on the NFL's obsession with quarterback hand size publishes ESPN DOT com today. So Dave yesterday was a big day for the quarterback prospects at this year's combine the annual release of the hand size measurements and the annual freak out about said measurements. Well I mean. It's like a national scouting holiday when the the QB hand size measurements. Come out because there is the belief that the distance between a potential NFL quarterbacks tip of his pinky and the tip of his thumb directly correlates to their success in the NFL. That's why we care just to give people sort of a framework here. What what is the big hand? And what is this small hand in football world red flags and NFL SCOUTING? Go up if your hand is smaller than nine and a half inches. But the guys who are said to have hands the size of Catcher's Mitts are. That's generally anything above ten inches. The normal size of adult humans hand is like eight and a half inches eight eight eight point seven five inches right now. Everyone is listening to this. Podcast is looking at their hands if they're under STEERING WHEEL WONDERING DO. I have two small hands. I've never thought about it until this very moment. Well Yeah and I think that is also part of it right that it's a myth or a theory or a legend that are virility is directly connected to the size of our hands that basically goes back to the beginning of time so in that sense. It seems logical that that we care about. How big a quarterback's hands are. What is the origin of the belief in the NFL world? That big hands equals good quarterback as far as I could tell were really took off with with Brett farve scouts and just people in general trying to quantify any way they could why this guy who was sort of a washout in Atlanta would go to the freezing cold and ice elements inside Lambeau field and become a three time. Mvp I mean. I think that's just human nature and scouting in general right that it's like whoa something weird like this happens. We want to be able to quantify it honestly. I think the there were some packers personnel. Who sort of wanted to claim credit for basically knowing in advance that he would be great because of his hand size and then what happens is human nature takes over right and people are like well. That's that's gotta be true. Look at Brett Farr for Lou peyton manning or look at Russell Wilson drew brees. I mean their hands are huge. So therefore air go right. All good quarterbacks have to have big hands breezing. Wilson are interesting examples. Because those were quarterbacks who were not universally seen as being sure things? Yeah in cases like that especially with Russell Wilson. You've got a really influential scouting and personnel department in Seattle right. That is sort of the envy of the rest of the League. And what happens is they. They can't decide. They're worried about picking him so high mainly because of his height and then one of the things that pushes him over the edge in their minds is the fact that he's got huge hands. I think the bigger the hands the easier it is to grip the football and let it rip so for me this this pointer finger right near the tip of the football and let spent basically he should be like seven foot seven if you go proportionately of for how big his hands are so the seahawks based on this data get pushed over the edge. They're like okay. We're GonNa Take Russell Wilson and then retrospectively. It's like Oh look at that. How genius that was that. We went by his hand size. And then that sort of proliferates the myth through all these other kind of envious scouting department's and the same thing for debris. I mean he's a short guy but he's got huge hands data on S. U. Y. When did you as a reporter? Who's been covering football for a long time? I start to doubt the correlation between hand size and being good quarterback I was at years ago at Jamarcus Russell's pro day at at Lsu and it was not good and as he finished up his workout. I walked out with a GM and a coach that I respected and I was like what did you guys think. That was very good and they both were like. Yeah but did you see his hands? They were huge. I think the coach even said it's like he's got an extra knuckle and I was like what that doesn't make any sense right. He could barely connect with his wide receivers on these on routes where there was no defense and they walked out of there going. Yeah but his hands are so huge. He's a can't miss prospect and ever since then really it was kind of like we need to look into this because it doesn't make any sense there have been exhaustive studies including one we did at ESPN. That went back over the last ten graphs and compared quarterback hand size to fumble rate per game and then Qbr overall there is zero correlation between the size of a quarterback's hand and their performance in the NFL. Zero correlation if anything it was in reverse the GUYS WITH QUOTE UNQUOTE SMALLER. Hands fumbled at the same rate and had a higher qbr than quarterbacks with bigger hands. It's like I don't understand. It takes two seconds to look this up to see if there's any correlation and what happens is you look at the data and you go. Well what's going on it's laughable coaches say? Oh hand size is more important than how Tala quarterback is I've read quote unquote draft experts. Who are saying you know in some situations. The size of a quarterback's hand is more important than his arm strength. What and Yes yes. It's never ending. You make a really important point story beyond questioning you know. The connection hand size measurements themselves are not very reliable. This the more you look into this it just gets sillier and Sillier and the fact that between the senior bowl and the combine and then pro day workouts on college campuses. There's no universally accepted way to measure a hand so you could go to the combine and where there's a ruler tape to a desktop and you have to put your hand down and they measure the distance between your thumb and your pinky and that's your hand size and three weeks later at your pro day. They might ask you to just hold your hand up in the air and they would spread a tape measure between your pinky and your psalm. And and that's your hand size one. You can lean into and spread your hands out on a desk. The only thing wrong with the theory of quarterback hand size is that it's fundamentally flawed on every single level if grip strength is more important. Sounds like you think it is. Why don't teams measure that? I honestly that's the million dollar question right. I think that they think that. There's a correlation between size and strength of a grip that's like measuring a kickers foot size to try and predict how long his field goals will be. I think that they think they're measuring for hand strength. And they're not they're measuring hand size and those are two completely different things. There's an entire cottage industry in the draft process of preparing these quarterbacks for you know the combine drills the interviews. Is there any preparation they can do? I can't believe I'm asking a question to make. Their hands seem larger. Yes absolutely there are players because they have no choice. That will hire your hand. Masseuses to loosen up the connective tissue in their hand just so that they can get that measurement over nine inches and sort of. Check that box off Brandon Allen. Who's now a backup in? Denver is a perfect example of that right. He went into the senior bowl. Didn't even realize hand measurement was a thing and just sorta held his hand up and they were like oh eight and a half inches. And everyone's like Oh my God his career's over and so between the senior bowl and the combine the masseuse that he was already working with spend a little extra time massaging his hand and then when he got to the combine he really concentrated on the measurement spread his hand out as far as he could and I think he got just under nine inches and again like the talk of the combine. Was this guy's magical hand masseuse. And he told me right that other quarterbacks with tiny hands we're blowing up his phone asking him what his secret was and and could they get the number of his masseuse coming up. How our brains allow this and other faulty? Nfl Scouting Practices to persist

How cities are preparing their water infrastructure for bigger storms
"The cost of heavier rainfall. I'M NPR CHIEF. Meteorologist Paul Hutton. Or this is climate. Cats governor. Tim Wall says Minnesota Needs Two hundred ninety three million dollars to retrofit. Its water infrastructure to keep up with climate change last year more than twenty Minnesota location set annual precipitation records that includes the twin cities and Rochester. Were more than fifty. Five inches fell last year. Minnesota is now about five inches wetter on average than in nineteen eighty and these heavier twenty-first-century rains are overwhelming. Our Twentieth Century Stormwater Infrastructure Randy Nip rash is a storm water regulatory specialist with Stanford Consulting and the Minnesota cities stormwater coalition. Hi Randy Paul. So we see the data right. Minnesota's getting wetter. What are the impacts of this climate shift on Cities? Not only are we getting wetter in general but more of our rainfall is coming in more intense. Storms everybody has seen what a really intense storm does to an urban storm water system. But you can Get those sort of impacts at scales where you have real problems where you can jeopardize property where people can get injured or even killed and those impacts are real inconsequential for our cities. We have rain bursts last summer in South. Minneapolis in a neighborhood that overwhelmed the storm systems and there was water up to the top of the tires and cars parked on the street. How does that four cities to to those heavier bursts of rain? One of the things that we try to do is figure out where the problems are going to be an advance so instead of just responding to problems after they happen we can use computer models to look at our urban stormwater systems we can we refer to it as dropping designed storm onto our urban landscape using these computer models. Watch how all the water moves through the storm water system and see where the problems are going to be. So for instance the hundred year storm nowadays For the twin cities area is thought to be about seven and a half inches which is up from six inches from earlier precipitation frequencies that change in rainfall can cause impacts that we can Analyzing advance anticipate and perhaps address before they happen instead of after it happened. Okay so let's say we do that. And we address them. I assume we're building bigger storm water projects and how much can a big storm? Water project cost a city a million multiple millions of dollars. Sometimes sometimes it's a fixes though can be quite simple. You can provide a path for water to pass under an emergency situation. Could be a road. Could be a parking lot of places where you can move water or store. Water even temporarily. Sometimes you can do it pretty cheaply randy and you're dealing with cities. What's your assessment of where they are with this process? Are they on the right track? With upgrading. Stormwater infrastructure cities are as usual trying their best They also have multiple water issues to deal with so for instance they have state permitting. Requirements for water quality whereas flooding questions are related to water quantity. There isn't the same regulatory pressure on the water quantity side but the cities are always and and for a very long time have been deeply concerned about flooding potential randy crash with stand tech consulting and the Minnesota City stormwater coalition thanks for being on climate cast today always a pleasure. Paul keep up the good

You'd be a good Texans coach by the way out of gas, pulled the same shit last week and almost cost them the game against the bears because they were at, I don't know the five inch line and they had to the ball. First of all, I believe they were in shotgun formation. The same way below Brian was in shock formation, like with the fucking knows of the football, like like basically with the within Infinity's with yeah, of the of the goal. And that's when you gotta go five wide, they're not. Yeah, it. That's what you need a twelve step draw. And at a jet sweep. Reverse pass. Anyway, they got to cute and can. Can you Drake fumbled the ball and that going shock on there? Just drives me up the wall. Nobody just just having these obvious passing plays when its third. Nothing just drives me up the fucking wall Redford. Yeah. Well, then I mean, the bears blue that game in their own right to by playing for a fifty yard field goal and getting super-conservative around midfield link. You're playing the dolphins man like you can probably get another I down. I mean. I mean, a neutral Bisky is also like on the aspect as well. But like I dunno like play football, go forward and yet mischievous threw six touchdown passes in a game this year. What about Carolina? No, he will get fired midseason. But do we think red for this is last season in Seattle? It might be, but I still think he's like a good coach in his own strange Caroline way. It seems like just made this weird decision to commit to him and Wilson over the the defensive personnel. And when like defensive personnel was the the personnel at the heart of the team, and also the best thing about it, like building that team around like p carols, brilliance, and Russell Wilson's brilliance, like it's fine. Those are both highly competent professional people, but like with normal takes and opinions..

It was like an up and down day. That's right. What? Yeah, an out to the streets I went on, I remember we lived up in the Sacramento area at the time, and it was a very conservative community and seeing having our son see friends parents with a yes on eight sign and then saying, we don't want. You know, there was a one little boy who said, I don't think gay people should be married. We should get rid of him. And then my son heard that and I was out holding a sign that we're a ton of people that, yes, on eight signs and I was holding a no on eight and I got punched. I got spit at, I got pushed into traffic and this was just seven, eight years ago. This is just seven, eight years ago. I had a guy come up to me and say, I'm gonna keen kill you and I'm not a wuss. I don't back down, but the way he said that one, I thought this this, I need to get out of here. And I mean, this was all because I wanted to to marry the woman that I'd been together with for however many years at the time. So it's it's rough. So you're still rough. So even you still see things today as so much better, quote, unquote, but you still you've seen yourself even how we're not. We're not there. We're not there, but I, I maybe naively I don't. I don't want to ever talk about where we're not because I feel like if you put your energy towards something, that's what you feed. And so I like to say, I like to say. Take a look at. Look. I never thought it'd be married, let alone habit valid in all fifty states. I never thought that would be something that would be available to me. Now, do we have further to go? Yes, we have opportunities we have. You know, there are still states where someone can be fired for being gay or kicked out of their home just for being gay, you know, and and we have a conversation that's an opportunity for us to have. People will say, you know, hey, we just just agree. It's okay to disagree about gay rights. And what you're telling me is you want me to accept you for not accepting me, and I think that that's a conversation that is an opportunity for us to grow in as well. Yes, and that's, you know, my huge belief in a lot of what the shows have been all these years is to talk right act discourse, an have opinions, even if you don't agree with them in an environment we're not going to be screamed at so you can try to stand Brian. Did you have a conversation from it? Yeah. And I think that's always. Important with all of these types of social issues of like, you need to talk to the people who don't feel that way right? And not just alienate them from your world completely obsolete. Creates so much divide. Right, right. But yeah. So how how did people react back when you did come out once? It became more when more people knew and like I guess now when people meet you, like, how do you compare kind of what it was like in the nineties to now? Well, it's funny because I a lot of people tried to hide their sexuality. We used to call it. Straightening up..

"Asked to right now bryant it definitely is and uh if you remember i we were against each other than that orlando game but i i i just in the cup so many times and everything that i i said on the podcast is is what is workout in y'all jerry schmitz did play terribly while he doesn't have that same piracy has macau's same with thompson i don't know what's going on with him uh these are the guys that you would have you had coming off the patch that were coming out there and they were giving the full efforts well if you watch a play nobody is giving any full efforts dwayne wage at this point the guy that i like what he comes out on the court he's still makes the right country still puts itself in a position to get the open passing not many hundred acts do and it's just one of those things that you know when they went up against oklahoma city this this telling port was you can watch every ten oklahoma city went down there no matter who got the ball they always seem to be on yours with or isaiah thomas and they had a four five inch advantage in high when they went up against them in no matter who was they would find that that's a spot to be able to exploit the cleveland cavaliers defense and it happen every time down then when you see cleveland coming down cleveland doesn't look like they look to exploited anybody in that regard uh kevin love's one of those guys that gets you from the outside so you pull in the the the bigger guys out they don't seem to do enough of that and then when he goes down hundred days uh he should be able to have his way and and they've gotten totally away from that um so it's i don't know what's going on over there but there's no way uh i'm gonna back them and they haven't cover since we've done that last podcast they haven't come close to covering and it's going to continue is is this team right now is just the effort is not there and when you've got the veteran leadership.

"On offers better brightness in contrast which refers to the difference between the whitest whites in the darkest blocks and as a result more vibrant colors and they sip rather than gulp electricity so there's some benefits there and then lg and then to a lesser extent sony has come along with a newer technology called auled organic light emitting diodes that require no back lighting at all these are self emitting pixels that show you brightness and and and beautiful contrast in color without needing a back light so superthin tvs even more energyefficient and then samsung never adopted that technology they thought it was too costly so they tried a couple of different things what is called quantum dots or q led and then now micro led so these are still lightemitting diodes but much smaller than what they are typically using right ted labs louis area so the these are it's almost like you can make the pixels even smaller than they already are on a typical led and because they are able to their own light in a not exactly the same way as a let does by any means because they're not selfa emitting completely blod you are able to make a panel considerably thinner there is a cash to all this and one of them is that with all that you can go extremely thin i i don't know if you've got a chance to see it i saw lee rolling tv that lg at it was a sixty five inch that literally rolled out and down as if it was like a poster basically i didn't see it with my own eyes i'd its read about it online and i know it's from and lg subsidiary called lg display fess ray i i did see a few years ago from that same comp penny a role abol digital newspaper so same idea it's like something you can roll up like a paper newspaper but it is a a screen so and i did see the new lg tv through lg display the prototype display what are some of the application for that i.

"Tell really much of a performance difference at all between the year and a half alive pro and the sixmonth old you know ten point five inch ipad pro at the screen definitely looks better on the other one but but the the result of this is the days that i work hard at my desk i barely touched the ten point five of all maybe i'll read something in bed before i go to bed i keep that one on the night stand but on the days that i'm out meeting with clients and getting work done are going to starbucks are in a doing whatever uh i use the ten point five all day i think that i think that makes more sense so you're really more of a multi ipad lifestyle out of convenience than than truly using multiple knife multiple ipads from multiple different tasks i guess is what it sounds like i've always been in favour of being able to do my work anywhere so if i have to ipads i want my main apps on both ipads i get i i get the kind of the productivity philosophy behind the idea of same this is my writing ipads so i turn this thing on my brain looks at it and there's only my writing apps available to me and that's where you know i get that but that's something that i've never felt i personally needed it's just like the people who turn off their internet for two hours because they're afraid they're going to go on facebook um i just don't go on facebook in i i'm good that i have a lot of failings don't get me wrong i'm not trying to put myself above anybody but that's just not one of mine when i want to get work done i can turn everything else often my brain i don't need to force it through software.

"Uh if you want the ten point five inch which is perfectly fine solution of the pro these are both relatively new and both refreshed well against the topol nongatt refreshed and the fi temple fog at released earlier this year but anyway that's nine ninety nine for that one plus the pencil i don't know what they're doing here i don't know where the magic is but there is zero detectable lag with that with the with the apple pencil like nothing i put it to screen i move it everything does exactly what i wanted to do and it as a quickly without any catch up with without any lag at all now some of that depends on the app on using from using an older less optimized appliqued art studio or something like that it's a little you get you know there's more noticeable lags a does definitely seemed like the the apps can make a difference um but if the app is well optimized it's undetectable in the adobe apps nondetectable this zero lag that i can see i'm sure there some in some infant decimal way that i can't see it and the hundred twenty uh hurts refresh on the display perhaps helps that but it just feels so smooth buttery smooth get not on there um the pencil complete delivers in this way i wish it was a charge list like the way com and microsoft solutions that's my biggest bummer here you do need to charge it it holds charge for very long time it charges very fast so it's not that big of a deal but i don't love that account which the tech was different a may be that.
