"This is spy show from foreign policies. Were spies it turned out. This guy had wormed his way into the center of the communist command for the saigon area and the data he had access to all their secrets. This guy t you hackel from. Our standpoint was the walking equivalent of having a spy in hitler's bunker from foreign policy. Welcome back to spy on each episode. We get one former intelligence operative to tell the story of one operation. I'm margo martindale frank. Snap was a cia analyst based in saigon during the vietnam war in april of nineteen seventy five. He discovered that north vietnamese forces were preparing. Large-scale attack on saigon snap wrote reports about the coming offensive based on information from his best source a communist defector named t. You hackel but the higher ups refuse to believe it. When the attack began later that month americans conducted a frenzied evacuation leaving behind many vietnamese allies and marking a humiliating end to the war. This is snap story about the fall of saigon. Early april nineteen seventy five four weeks before the end. The ambassador graham martin and the cia station. Chief tom bogor or convinced for various reasons that either we could win the war with what we had left or that we could negotiate a surrender and the question was what we're our best assets telling us. The first guy that we needed to check in with was a hanoi source. I had been for the past two years exclusively responsible for debriefing and briefing. This asset he came into saigon snuck into saigon. Ci caterers laid on a big sumptuous lunch. To make up for the slim pickings he had to endure in hanoi. And so we opened up in. What he said simply was this. The communists are on a blood sat. They are going to go for military victory in the shortest possible time. Well there seemed to be an absolute thumbs down on the idea that we could ingratiate our way out of this madness. After talking to the source. I raised to the embassy to let my immediate superior. Tom po. garneau. What i learned and i briefed ambassador martin. I had been doing this job now. For the past three years. I had risen to become the ambassadors chief briefing officer. I was extremely close to him. I had once dated his daughter and survived. The break-up to remain in the ambassador's good graces. The chief. Tom bogor and i were very close. Because bogart love to use me to spy on martin and martin us made us by on pogo. So i take this report back to the embassy. And i tell pogo what's going on paul. Gar didn't like it at all. He didn't like to hear the communists weren't a blood sent and that there was probably no chance for negotiations so he tried to minimize this intelligence and he proceeded with the idea that we could somehow soccer the other side into negotiations now. Graham martin. Didn't mike this message either. He didn't want to hear that. The communists were barreling their way in martin had convinced himself with the help of his military advisers at the defense at shays office that saigon could rally the forces that had been salvaged from the communist offensive up north that they could build a defense line just north of saigon forty miles out whole the north vietnamese advance there until the monsoons intruded to slow the communist down bogged them down and they would be in a position to fight again another day so both of them were absolutely averse to evacuation planning because evacuation planning could bring on chaos and confusion chaos and confusion would make it impossible to negotiate a settlement on saigon's terms so i took away from this meeting boy. We're in trouble. And we should accelerate manning for an evaluation. We should start reducing the american community which was about six thousand strong that included businessmen back acuras contractors spokes diplomats. Whatever we should begin reducing this number so that we would have only small chopper loads in the end and time was absolutely of the essence because we have the entire north vietnamese army with an a drive hours. Dr downtown side. So if we didn't begin planning for an evacuation right.

"The reason. You got a fake. Id saying that you're sixty five. Four weeks the big fear has been about the dangerous variants of the virus from the uk and south africa that are now spreading around the globe but now the united states is getting some mutations of its own this morning growing concerns about variants of the corona virus. The new york times reports doctors have now found seven variants of the virus that originated in the us. Spotlighting the urgent need for better tracking of cases and mutations all of his various had the same exact mutation now. That could just be coincidence but some researchers are worried they could this mean that the virus is getting smarter and adapting. That's right people. There are now various of the coronavirus that were made in the united states. Which means these new coronas don't even believe in corona and what's depressing to realize is that throughout the pandemic. the virus has been getting smarter and smarter while us. Humans only seem to be getting less bring good gooder this this good brained but let's be honest kind of people. We as humans let this virus spreads so easily that we gave it lots of chances to mutate and evolve. You know it's like what happened with alternative milks we let looks like then almond milk. Then oath nook now. We're like two months away from the baristas fish milk. And you're doing some fishing please. So the pandemic is moving into a new phase. But we're learning a lot about how so many things went wrong up until now and it looks like one person that many of us gave a lot of credit to might have been hiding. Some things growing fallout for new york governor. Andrew cuomo and his administration over withholding cova death toll numbers in nursing homes. The growing scrutiny comes just weeks. After new york attorney general letitia james released a report claiming the state had undercounted deaths by as much as fifty percent state. Health officials acknowledged. The death toll was more than fifteen thousand much higher than originally reported top. Cuomo aide admitted withholding data for months over concerns. the trump justice department might use the info against them. Those comments sparked immediate backlash among lawmakers on both sides of the aisle state republicans. Going so far as to say he should be impeached. Wow rarely governor cuomo you load your own numbers to make yourself look better. Who i guess. We just got uninvited to my twenty nine th birthday next week and the explanation for this explanation that they with is that they thought the trump administration would use the high nursing home deaths against them which yes usually. If you not doing good job it gets used against you. That's the whole point of data. This would be like the kansas city. Chiefs said come on. You're gonna look at the scoreboard isn't enough that i'm telling you that i won the superbowl come on and when you think about it messing with covert numbers to make yourself look at is just about the trump thing that you can do. Which is ironic. Since the main reason cuomo became a pandemic hero is that he was giving informative coherent press conferences while trump was trying to inject people with bleach a bowl of chef boyardee. And you put it next to a bowl of worms. The fact that it's next to something so disgusting makes those ones look really delicious. Like look man. I don't care what anybody says for me. You cannot justify doing the wrong thing because you say oh trump might have on might not have or. I know you did the wrong thing. Hey back men did you kill those innocent people. I had to do it. You should have seen what the joker was going to do to them. Like worst.

"Away eyes Stevie go into this file you're allowed to see the stuff in the box what did you find did you find anything that was contrary to what you suspect. well actually one of things I might add that Steve Lopez also in his reporting on the newspaper clings discovers that George hotel was suspected of murdering his secretary two years earlier any rights that this call into talking to sources the pro he was actually suspect of suspected murder his personal secretary the lady that deed yes supposedly which was a suicide but they believed it was a overdose of forced overdose by him. so anyway are you I'm going through the transcription Mr reading and all I've got the transcription from read to some of the excerpts verbatim. supposing I did kill the black Dahlia they couldn't prove it now we can't talk to my secretary more because she's the. and that refers to the secretary that he killed eighteen months earlier who probably could have connected him the other thing we discover is that in the police reports is that he was dating Elizabeth short so they confirmed that they were he was a former suitor of hers and was dating dating her those are actually in the police report. and he goes on to say put a pillow over head notices about a secretary. over her with a blanket got a taxi coal Georges St receiving expired at twelve thirty nine they thought there was something fishy anyhow they may have figured it out maybe I did call my secretary. another day says I'm in trouble black Dahlia passports please seven pictures of me and that girl I thought I'd destroy them. he talks about performing abortions at this clinic. many service is the best playoff I've seen between law enforcement agencies you don't have the right connections made of the DA's office don't confess sever we're just a couple of smart boys he's talking to a German Baron up Karenga who's there with him on these conversations no he suspects the phones are tapped but he doesn't have a clue that the house was wired for sound. but then the big kicker this is the one that really turned the whole thing around and gave me an explanation. is about three days into the into the surveillance of these guys are what they did was they picked up George hotel and took him into the hall of justice well I got it in there they go out to our house and they and they break it down and they actually. wired for sound they put microphones in the living room and the bedroom. and run hard line through the basement they run a hardline to Hollywood station about two and a half miles away where I would work for seventeen years and sit in the basement in there they've got teams of two man teams twenty four seven for six weeks no listening to these conversations live and anyway I get to page three and this is what really blows me away I start reading the transcript. and it's February eighteenth nineteen fifty seven thirty five PM hotel Franklin house booking to school one. four twenty woman asking for the operator several times so that is she was crying four twenty five PM woman asking for operator again said something not heard operator. eight twenty sounded as though the two men this is spurring go the Bering and went down the steps and entered the basement began digging something is referred to not a trace it also appears a pipe was being hit a woman screams more blows a woman screams again. I'm reading this sentence I can't believe what I'm reading the flick my god there are five minutes away sitting there and they do nothing. you know why are they help the door over to the house into a rescue but they do nothing. so at the very least this is a serious felony assault more likely I'm absolutely convinced it was a murder. on tape. so. and may go on for another five four weeks. so basically this is to me is the explanation of why the cover up. and you kind of understand the timing of it all chief Parker is about to take literally weeks away from becoming the new chief and there's been all this pressure to solve all of these unsolved crimes and he knows that if this comes out he he will be able to take power and he wants to clean up dog you know and so I think there was ill in a league low candles were burning late night at the city hall and they sat down and they said look. this comes out we won't be able to take power do the things we want to do let's lock this away let's put this in the vault for now and we'll come back to it at a future time. look you know otherwise you know we're not gonna have a chance so what kind of a Machiavellian decision on their part you do think that some of the evidence has been purged that there's a reference to photograph so of a Mister Barnes lieutenant Barnes that you think was your dad in the company of Elizabeth short at the they checked into a motel or something and and there's a photograph at least one right or will we discover so well you know so you know after the book comes out in all of this information you know it you know we do dateline doesn't our on my investigation and court TV does an hour and forty eight hours as an hour in the interview LAPD and they have nothing everything has disappeared. you know they should but what we know from the from the transcripts is with the world turned over to LAPD to fat brown chief of detectives. personally handed to him and the DA's guys removed from the case in order not to not to pursue anything. so we know that they were turned over to a fat brown but today's LAPD knows nothing about it they didn't know they existed. and so everything was removed all of the physical evidence for DNA and stuff is missing the they don't know where it is. so basically it was you know a cover up back then you know supposedly for the good of the city and the good of the department and the good of themselves and we would have never had had Lopez not you know gotten this file we would have never known any of this LAPD that would have never known any of this today's LAPD. so you know that's where these guys these these these old clothes detectives well brown and and Parker they have you know blood on their hands in the sense that you know of. had they done waters and then of course the other thing was that the the split he leaves the country right then. makes it easy for and I'm sure they rationalize walk he's out of the country maybe we can find them maybe we can maybe we can extradite a maybe we can comes back to get maybe get guys were giving kicker but. look let's just come back to the future time let's clean up get rid of corruption and stuff and I think that's exactly what happened and the sad thing is. because they allowed him to remain free and they never came back to it he would go on to kill more and more he did additional killings of the different you know in Manila and other places yeah I think about the police what it must've been like for them at that time the tips coming in and calls and they continued you haven't mentioned it in the book it continued or probably it continues to this day people are calling and I figured it out I know who killed the black Dahlia and they go yeah yeah yeah we've heard it a thousand times you know I I after a while I can see it gets old yeah but you know but we you know there's so much more to I mean I would I've actually been able to and that's what these other you know there's a book to a book three and what they are it's really all one investigation it's like an ongoing investigation and I've been able to actually establish physical evidence connected from the Franklin house to the crime scene you know the sub cement bags we talked about and then the newer back. those were actually I discovered that Lloyd Wright had a file at UCLA special collections I went looked at it and I'll be damned if there was a file and George will deal in the. the right collection. and their receipts for these fifty pound bags of cement. he had he hired right to do some repairs and the date is January the ninth of the tenth of nineteen forty seven so for three four days before the murder these bags are at the hotel residence empty you know empty cement fifty pound bags and this is what he used to transport the body parts after the porch after she was tortured and washed clean in the bathtub of. he used to use the upper lower torso transported these bags to the crime scene. took her off the bags and left the bags near the body. yeah we don't have serial numbers on the bags but you know how many people are coming so switch or walk around fifty pounds. but paper bags in there you know when I used it to protect the car and stuff so I mean so you've got the physical evidence there you've got admissions the other kicker is that we've got actual. all the top cops that were involved in the investigation we've we've got that admitting the George hotel did all region their statements so we've got from chief Parker. quote we identify the black Dahlia suspect he was a doctor in quote what we know from the DA files with that doctor was George hotel that brown quote the black curly case was solved he was a doctor who lived on Franklin Avenue in Hollywood end quote. quote from lieutenant Jennison DA we know who the block of the killer was he was a doctor but we didn't have enough to put him away well yeah they did. and then finally we got the undersheriff blacker case was solved it'll never come out suspect was a doctor the all new in Hollywood involved in abortions again from the DA files we know who this doctor was it was George hotel do you think you have an accomplice at least for some of the the crimes right the guy who was in the room when your sister was molested. yes Fred Sexton I've definitely was an accomplice and in fact I've I've just. come out with a new book a few weeks ago which is a standalone double homicide from nineteen thirty eight called in the street where the two of them murdered up warm out in Texas West Texas when he was doctoring in New Mexico and Arizona. about three hundred miles away anyway they committed this I've got a very solid case together on that. seventy year old who done it and it's just amazing at L. I'm actually I make a very strong compelling case it was six in the end George that did that murder and is involved in other murders you mentioned very briefly earlier in our conversation about this famed photographer a man ray who was as you describe in sort of a SEATO **** who was into the same kind of stuff your dad was in and and you found some photos of that he had produced at taken and and produced that that one of which seems to have been the inspiration for how the body was displayed in the vacant lot yeah this is the well this this is a serious and important crime signature to the whole thing and explains my father's slow to a club with the really and it was all about murders of fine art the closing of the body in that position was he was copying his close friend manta rays photograph called the minotaur which is a woman bisected at the waist hands over her head in that same position. that also did some cuttings on the body to another of painting of clown raise an earlier painting which is called play a quick okay that's a very unusual geometrical of police car gone too Elizabeth short's right hip..

"Another. Six. Yet. So we're gonna keep playing this game. The dumbest thing I've all the stuff. That's happened this year with both these teams this is the dumbest. Also, remember, this is what Todd Bowles controls bike. He doesn't control the roster. He controls who on the roster plays. So this could go to you know, what many Shas writing in the paper back. Oh, yeah. You wanna give me a rookie quarterback? I don't have to play them if I could disappear. Well, if he's doing that, then they shouldn't let them coach this nonsense. We're dealing with that. This is to get rid of a man to the first bills games. Why this is why you worry about the structure of the way set up. I can't imagine that the jets would go down this road. Again, this way, the they learned a very valuable lesson. I've really do. So if that's the case with Todd, I do believe that SAM's gonna play this week. I think ultimately. Core heads and higher. Heads will prevail. When I say the higher ups will prevail and healing applying Sunday Cowboys eagles. Here was eagles. Linebacker. Komo crews year hill this week. I mean history they always joke. So we'll go down and make choke. The eagles are six and six or seven five four weeks ago. What? Yeah. That's a strong words. I mean history always joke. So we'll go down and made choke now. Doug Peterson called those comments unfortunate. Kill Carson Wentz quickly. Let's go to David in Westchester. What's happening? Hey, what's going on guys, boomer? I was actually on the set last week on NFL today. Yeah. You're talking about buying. I'm tight with him on the trainer trainers ion. Yeah. Yes, exactly, David, please. Tell me David tell me David here. Tell me what you told me about Zion. And what a great kitty is. He's a great kid. I love the kid. He's you know comes from a great family. He's very humble works. Really hard. I'm I'm really happy. Great. Great great, great up. This is the guy I want. Yeah. You gotta keep boy from GO man, hugging them all over the place. Now, my question is you know, because of the Knicks lost last night. I was just trying to figure out. You know, we gotta figure out a lot of things, but what are your wearing needs. In terms of what we draft considering we're talking about nine and other guys like that. Well, you I, and that's all we want. I mean, you want to get one of those top three picks RJ barriers ion Williamson. That's that's what you want. And I hope that this roster now is just totally depleted. And you're playing a bunch of guys that probably won't be on the roster fine. Just keep lose it. Whatever it takes to get those top three and he got a shot at one of those two guys. And then you try to sign Durant right now. Phoenix, Chicago, Atlanta, have the top three picks with Cleveland, Brooklyn and New York right there. So Cleveland's got five wins in Brooklyn and New York both have eight wins. Yeah. Knicks lost to the Celtics won twenty eight one hundred Irving had twenty two he was nine of fifteen shooting. Also of note devils beat the kings six to three penguins over the islanders six two and the Red Sox resigned, Nathan of all the we were talking about how what the money would be sure your sixty eight million dollars is what does it sixteen seventeen year, right? Yeah. Couldn't pay that. That's all. I think that's a lot of money for a guy. Who's how old is he now? Yeah. I mean, that's the other part about this too is he's based like his whole deal is velocity. So the length of the contract was another thing is he to be thrown ondra miles an hour and four years slider. Big hands. I don't know much about how Edwin d as had big hands and big fingers. So one was mcilvaine or somebody who found him. Yes. That's correct fair for DiPoto in Seattle while you know, he's skinny he's light. And all that stuff. He's got big fingers of big hand. So so he's gonna twenty nine opening day a volley. Thirty two. Okay. So that's not bad. So seventeen million a year. Out again man between Jonathan scope the Indians catcher Carlos Carrasco and extension through twenty twenty two. Wasn't. He on the Yankee radio was was. Yeah. Perhaps Corey kluber is on their radar. Now, Raymond is going to force Brian Cashman to make a stupid move and go get Manny Machado, or so I don't think that would be a stupid move out hit everybody playing baseball anything that would be brilliant. Actually, it's going to seem to go sign. A twenty five year old superstar now future all Famer die that you're gonna do. Hall of fame or any Manny Machado will end up in the hall of fame. You're gonna you're gonna end up giving him three hundred million dollars. I don't wanna give them, but I wouldn't call it. A dumb move whoever signs them they need pitching. They have enough. They have enough players especially with Didi gregorious comes back idiot team. That is Bryce Harper. I'm dying. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Revisit this halfway through their new contract out if they get ten years, and then they opt out for ten more years. Exactly. I don't I don't know anybody who give ten years, but someone gonna give seven or eight years. Stanton thirteen actually thirteen years. Well, whatever even dumber. And then what they do. They couldn't wait to unload it. Well, did they also gave what ten years to Robbie canal? Yes. Unloaded, right. And had to pay for it, Niagara, I'd give him seven seven eight easy Robbie always thirty one. These guys are five and six years Robbie Canoas. It's a big deal. Can't compare those contracts. Can't do it totally different. You're giving somebody a ten year deal with those guys. I would consider it. If it's gonna put my team over the top because you're going to thirty five twenty six to thirty six you're not going thirty one to forty one. It's different. It's totally different. But yeah, if you can avoid it, if the back end of the contract doesn't mean anything to you, and you just have so much money. It does matter then go for it. I guess, but I'm just I'm Mike is earning there. Offered mature seriously if someone offered Machado right now, eight years to thirty you takes it. No. These guys are trying to break the Bank break the Bank. I mean, I think they want to be north of thirty five million wondering it up into NBA money. I don't know if anybody's giving that don't, but that's what they want. I don't care what they want. I don't know. That's why I'm saying this is going to force the Yankees to do something stupid. That's all something stupid would be ten years thirty five million. I don't even think they'll do that. I don't I don't think anybody's getting ten years three hundred and fifty million dollars. I just can't keep saying it pitching pitching pitch the Phillies acquired I left ended pitcher Jose Alvarez from angels for a right handed pitcher Luis Garcia now run. We're done. She's Manny Machado is a trigger word for you. Isn't it? Really don't like this job for ten years. Manny Machado and Eli manning who fun. No way, not not not not on my watch. Throw Carmelo in there. Five or six years old? You really wouldn't sign him for ten years. Are you at? What you don't realize magin the excitement around this time. There are certain guys that I would consider giving more money to but less years and. What he said and the way plays and the things that he the way he carries himself on my. I'm not giving this guy tenure he's gonna change. I'm entrusting somebody to get a guaranteed contract north of three hundred million dollars for ten years. And I am not trust in this guy with that kind of money and that kind of length the contract, I'm sorry. Now, if you're gonna tell me I can get it for five years. So then he has to continue to play. Well, so he gets another contract, and I would consider it. So when I say with Brian Cashman, do something stupid like a ten year deal. That's what I'm talking about. I'm not talking about the signing of the player. I'm talking about the length of the contract. I would do it push comes to shove. I why I don't love the ten year contract, but his age. I would do it also depends what happens during this contract. You're telling me the last three years the guy's a total loaf, and it sucks, and it's an albatross. But you got to World Series in the early portion of that you're taking it. You don't even care. The guys would be a hero forever. How many World Series? Did they get with a-rod one? Was it worth it at the time? Yeah. Housing ear and then he ended up leaving. Well, he also ruined his own career. I mean that. But that's what I'm saying. When you give a guy that kind of money, and that could trade they traded for him though. Right. I mean that was different that was. And then they gave him more. Right. That's when they took the franchise away from Hank. Hank was in the quarter drink in the bud lights are the the heinekens get this guy..

"Network. Hat gray returns, triple eight, nine hundred thirty three ninety three and Pat unleashed on Twitter. So Jeffey I saw that the. Missouri Tigers actually gave. It seemed like they gave George good game. It was. It was actually a, it wasn't a blowout anyway. It wasn't that, but it kind of felt like it, but it kind of felt like this never score. They weren't really in the. It was forty two, twenty one nine or something, which is deceiving score. It looked like I thought, okay. Yeah, they were in it, but they don't really. They were really, no. I know it's very disappointing. It was frustrating game for them. Play? Well, no, not. Not well the team. If we were going to lose that game, we needed to lose it with lock throwing eight thousand yards. And I one point with one second left in the game, and that's not what happened at all. Okay. Okay. To be honest, I don't even think he threw a touchdown pass. Really, you know, I it's not the first game and forever that he hasn't thrown a pass. So it's a little frustrating game speaking frustrating game. So was my the BYU one though you're still rank, went up the charts again, thirty two, three victory was probably the most frustrating. Thirty two three victory in the history of football. Really frustrating. I did not watch this game. I was frustrated the whole time, but they I mean they did win and they won handily. It's just that games like that, though. Offense didn't play that where right. See games like that are games where you that thirty should have been sixty and it should have been no doubt about halfway through the third quarter. I should've been unday did it was about halfway or toward the end of the third quarter that they've brought in the second. And then eventually the third string. And so they got a little place. Yeah, they got a little playing time for the subs which was in fact, we would all the way down to the fourth or fifth string running back who's twenty seven twenty eight.
