"Don't like we're not we have to but we're not actually smarter than we were fifty years ago. We just have to be quicker. And that makes us wrong or gives us potentially to be long so much more often than i mean not. The people were infallible fifty years ago. But you at least had time to think about it before you said something really really dumb. That was going to get a lot of troubles and also puts all of those things on a microscope tip because it shows like oh. You said this one wrong thing. All of these years ago well we found it. And no one's happy about it and not have case by people have said stuff that it's like okay that was extremely bigoted like by like. Wow that was really awful. I can't believe anyone in their right mind but say that help. So there's sometimes where it's like. Okay but also they were replaying really quick and this was thirty years ago. I mean and i mean i'm a gen xer and i mean if there's one thing that every single person from my generation was thank god. My childhood was not on the internet. Thank god my teen years were not. I didn't have to have that. I got to be stupid and private. You guys have to be stupid in public and and then you know what's interesting is will you bear the consequences for our will the standards for behavior drop as they are dropping his right now. We get away with things that people not us but but but people do things that thirty years ago would have been the end of their career. And now it's okay because drought or standards. It's all everyone forgets about an immediate. Well right. that's the other thing is all you have to do is wait it out and wait for the next person to do something even more egregiously stupid than you did. And your home free. And then we're just moving on. It's great just great. Yeah your book rifle like there were elements of from where i am in it. That really hit on some of those things. I thought that was really interesting and especially in a book that is not about that that it was exploring those sort of games and stuff. That's where you sort of get into the world buildings just having the whole thing in a not at every single thing is going to be explored in depth but any you know the like in the theater if you go to play but you send the audience and you look at the stage. It looks beautiful. You walk around to the back of the stage. it's just plywood held up with some two by fours. There's no pain no anything and that's a little bit. What a book is. Is you as the reader. I want you when you encounter the world for the world of real and full without necessarily having to open all the drawers and there's nothing in this drawer. The store was just for show. So it's a little bit. You know 'cause i always find book slog down and that's the interesting thing was science fiction as it oftentimes in science fiction. They wanna open every drawer. What's in the store. What's in that and then ten page later. They've been through all the drawers and your. Where's the what happened to the story. And so keeping that balance of this because at the end of the day this book is about concepts about khan and everything else was in service to her. I didn't want her to be in service to the world that made any sense. I think that definitely came across. Because a lotta times sci-fi and i love reading about like world building all of the little aspects of different worlds but also that gets really hard to read after awhile. And i sometimes you don't need to know every single detail of this is what phones look like and this is what this looks like and this is what happened five hundred years ago to make this event in and i felt like this book did not get off track world building like an iceberg. Okay ideally to my mind. The reader should only see that little bit that sticking out of water but they should feel the weight the rest of that iceberg under the water. That feeling of like weight and and believability without necessarily having to look at every single inch of that iceberg. Only want us enough. You do the work like i have whole iceberg. I show you a thousand pages of like iceberg notes. And i'm only showed you got enough that you'd be like yes. I that that iceberg is there. If i kept going but it's a tough. It's my editor is. Can we lose a couple pages of this. Because i definitely you want to. You do all this work like. But i've got all this stuff about the iceberg. Like no one cares. Just tell the damn story So it is good daven editor who will sort of like rain author in. Because we're just like. Oh but i did all this work. Let me show you my work. Don't show the work definitely right. Well i think we're out of time here. I just have one last question. Okay well i am in the closing stages of this companion book to chant constants which is called chance it takes place in twenty forty two in california and I'm really excited about the ways that it extends and and continues starring continuing to explore some of the issues that this world has given me to the the play with And i'm really excited about. I'm hoping hoping to be done with it. later this year and fingers crossed. "To be a fun. Light without any parisian news. Thanks i. I don't know where. I'll have to just do a deep dive on on french news websites after this and most of it when i'm looking at what's going on france don't speak french and so it's mostly ascertaining the situation over there just by looking at the pictures lovely lovely loving tell what the social political climate. That's a lot of people i'll say. This french politicians appeared address better than american. That's the main headline sharply tailored clothes are going to bring some lunch. Lunch wine to the recording With tyler because that's what we talked about last week but he's not even here so you'll have to hold on just gonna stick to your drinking ford first team all right so guys real quick. Okay i've been thinking about this a while and just how particularly twitter has conditioned us just to be outraged all the time and there's a lot to be outraged about. I'm not necessarily saying that. There's a righteous anger that we should have towards a lot of things that are happening in the world. But i think sometimes it's going a little too far so i was you guys feel about space. Space is lame. And i never wanna go. It's expensive means. You're i do not understand this part of you. You're always up for adventures those ufo's because they're coming to us. Okay require me to be strapped into a seat for like ten hours and then the pinnacle of the experience is looking out a porthole window. That's barely bigger than my head. Okay like i can go to an amax max and have a waco or space experience then the rest of my life and have to pay like a half million dollars for a backseat ticket this week. The big news was sir. Richard branson the billionaire. You know he took the the the first ever virgin galactic Flight to the edges of space and he filmed it and you know like back in the day when an astronaut would go to space all right when they would come down there would be parades across the world for them like humanity was just like. Hey look what we did. We went to space. Okay richard brit. This is how this is how twitter shower just conditioned to think about human achievement. Right it's like the for for the past like going to space was a big deal like everyone around. The world was just excited that we did it. Richard branson this poor guy. who's you know. All he wants to do is like push the limits of what we're technically possible of. As soon as he announces it people like large even not come back. Let's block richard branson space like. Everyone just got insanely outraged. That he was he had to go to to space guy. And i'm like. Why do i care et buying a plane to go to space like. Why does that bother me. They're saying they're saying society would be better like he could for that. Billions of dollars could wipe out. Hunger incontinent sort of a thing that they're saying society would be better if you didn't do this. Excessive you know billionaires thing. I could say i could say it. Costs two hundred and fifty million dollars to to make the next avengers movie and i could say well. Disney should've spent up on anything and then their dog at him because he 'cause like barely the space you made it to the edge space. Who cares to go. and it's like. When did we turn into people that just find something totally innocuous a wealthy person pushing technological innovation pushing what humans are capable of and just turn it into well. I will be mad at him that he didn't give that money to to people. I mean he provided a lot of jobs for aeronautical engineers.

"Insurance all the freebies all the late nights just sitting around a diner writing sketches for shows that no one would attend. That didn't get paid. That amounted to nothing. I am being paid back for that. Yeah that's what this is. That's why my favorite are that. When i mean a guy in an advertising agency going back to madman the guy who being came the head of accounts and he was he was pissed off he was the co head of accounts their advertising. Guys i will meet. I got a fucking juice box with a strong on it and some like shrimp from cosco watching my kids bouncing in an inflatable thing. And i'm talking to a guy who's a parent who's a copywriter at ad agency and he says to me. Oh your community. Yeah we basically do the same thing. No no we do. Not you had a track track. You went to college for this rota quotes skill. And then you've got coffee for somebody. Who did it poorly till you put up with enough shit where you got the thing you were promised which was whatever junior this and then you had this track that relied as much on you. Bottling up your real emotions and knock complaining and then the payoff. Is you get a year to write a thirty. Second spot for volvo. I put out thirty new minutes every fucking month. And i'm doing it in shit holes hoping i get paid work in georgia so i mean and i'm not sitting here complaining at all but the point it doesn't sound like the point is you and i believed in something early on and we followed through on it and has to pay off because if there's not no one's ever gonna try to like that we do the same thing and i don't like that. It's who you know you got lucky. Yeah that whole you got lucky. It's who you know you didn't meet kimmel. You wouldn't be where you are today. Bob hate is that you're negative track in your mind people saying no i mean i don't really have. I don't have a negative track. I do more complaining about stuff that no one else gives a shit about. But i do. I have gotten it. You know people will do that. Show business not just to me but anyone in show business right time right place. Yeah no. it's all timing. How about every every place for fifteen years right and also every once in a while and one time. I got an argument with a friend of mine. Who'd gave me the welcome on right time right place and i said what are you talking about right time right place and he said well you know if you didn't meet kimmel you wouldn't have made it on k rock didn't make it on k rock you wanna made on mtv and blah blah blah. Well first off. I think we can all agree that we all could have just been born still board. I mean we're all semi lucky just at fucking have ten fingers and ten toes. I mean yeah yeah. I don't have a cleft palate. And i'm not i don't have the mind of a four year old. Look like bill maher. We all wrote a moped. When we were fifteen and could have been hit by a guy was high and had brain damage. I mean we all yes. We're all lucky to see turtles. Yeah we're lucky to have seen our fortieth anyone who makes it to forties lucky that they didn't on a prom night that cleaned out by drunk driver. But i said to this guy. I called the radio station. Ten times never called me back. I had a guy cover my class. I was teaching boxing. Cover my morning. seven am class. So i could go to iraq and get into the building in physically go to kevin and bean. The building was opened but k rock was closed. I got into the commercial building that there were in one up to the ninth floor. And then once i went to the ninth floor. The doors were locked. And then i stood out there in the hall and tell somebody who is going to change. Some of the doritos in the vending machine was going into the building and had the code or going into iraq. And i told them tell jimmy or the other guy out here in the hall waiting by the elevator that none of that has anything to do with luck. Yeah yeah and i resented yes. Like i said i could have been killed driving from the gym on the way to pay rock. Yes i guess. I was lucky not a war going on. We turned nineteen. And i mean there's so many things you avoid and none of this. I think is is complaining about anything except for the fact that at the end of the day when i see a guy who had who who's digging ditches and i'm driving home i think that guy is. He feels really lucky to have that job. Because it's a union job and it's there was something in his mind that was like shooting for that and he and it fits with his life. And whatever way you. And i for whatever reason. I didn't go to my best friend's mother's funeral. So i could drive for free to atlanta to do a guest spot to audition like this so many things i look at in my life that were off that we're fucked up and you can't explain them except that there was something deep inside. It was saying. I have to do this thing and it works out. And don't you can't here here's my answer at all. Those who do the right place. Right time luck thing. Greg fitzsimmons or adam corolla. We could just stop. Just stop doing what you're doing for six months. That doing standup stopped writing. Stop doing your satellite radio. Show just whatever it is. Just stop for six months or a year and see where you are answer right back to zero zero zero so this idea that you're lucky you're lucky you're lucky. Listen lucky is when your dad owns boeing. That you're born into it and gives you. He gives you a nice corner off right outta outta high school or college. Let's all i'm saying is. Let's see how lucky we are. Let's just stop doing everything for a year. And see if we don't go broke in completely just fade off.

Jacksonville Jaguars Expected to Sign Tim Tebow as TE

"This is austin lane. He's a former. Nfl tight end the host of action. Sports jacks on. Espn radio he was joining. He was joining freddie and fitzsimmons about whether tibo is going to be jacksonville simply for his leadership. The whole narrative that tim tibo coming to jacksonville. Be an urban meyer guy and helping that locker room presence. i think it's baloney. I'm not buying into that narrative because what what guys look for in terms of leadership and guys buy into his guys that have had except you know leaders guys that you can say this guy the baller. I gotta follow him and watch. How does now. I've talked to many times. Tim is a fantastic guy. But i think the whole narrative of you're going to bring him in because he's a great locker room guys all right. Great there's there's tons of great locker got. There's tons of great teammates just like any locker. Rooms made up of all types of people. So i'm not buying that austin lane also talked about. What exactly will tibo be doing assuming. He makes the team the whole narrative. That tim tebow coming to jackson i understand that he knows urban meyer. They have a great relationship. I guess you know. Urban meyer bought a house. experts week. Sent tibo so even if he makes the team. That's going to be great e hollywood. Tv show Urban meyer tim hero next door. It's gonna be fantastic. It's gonna do all the rating. But i do think this. This is urban meyer first year and then i saw and you know he's bringing his guys in. I understand all that. But what earn myers gotta realize. Real quick is that. You can't take anything if tim people is going to make. This team is because tim tebow has earned a spot. There are no you know there is no. I like this guy lot. Let's give him a spot. That doesn't work like that players not locking them. We'll see through that day one so two hundred two things are going to happen either. Tim tebow is not the tight end which we don't think he is and i'll be honest. I'm kind of in that boat or tim. Tebow is a tight end. And he earns his spot and he gets that roster spot and that's it was not good enough during the roster spot. He's not gonna get it. Because of urban meyer gives him that spot. He's gonna lose that locker room in a heartbeat.

William Turner Interview, horse training for the Triple Crown

"Another guy who knows a thing or two about training a good horses trainer Billy Turner. I told you today is his eightieth birthday. The man who conditions Seattle slew to win the triple crown in nineteen seventy seven. Yeah he was born on leap day he is a leap. Ling and eightieth birthday today. He's with me now for a few minutes here on H. R. BILLY. Thanks for taking a little time and happy birthday my friend. Well thank you very much. It's a pleasure to be here. I pointed out the a few minutes ago that if you're born on a leap day you celebrate a birthday every four years. Are you really eighty? Yes this is my. I never dreamed it possible because All my peers. And and so forth. And Sean have all passed away. Well thankfully you are still here with us in. You're able to join me here for a few minutes this morning. Yeah how are you gonNA celebrate your eightieth birthday billy Very very Very quietly and you know when you get to my age you don't you don't advertise your speech thankful for what you you're here billy when I say the name Seattle slew. What are some of the first things that pop into your head well just just a phenomenal athletes phenomenal Al Animal Very intelligent and Phenomenal speed and he could and there was just no quitting and yeah he was ultra tough. You know we talk about horses today. Billy some people say well you have to train them differently than you did. Back in the seventies and the sixties and the fifties and there are different types of horses but look we've seen two triple crown winners in recent years ending a long drought How how do you? How do you get a horse? Ready for the triple Crown Billy. What's what's the key. Well the thing is I was scorch obvious enough to be surrounded by some of the greatest a couple of the grave. Well couple of number of the greatest trainers of of our times and one was sunny. Jim Fitzsimmons in the learning. But Assad Ben Jones and Van Jones as you know we changed for Kalua met and five Derby winners and two triple crown. We're at all that kind of stuff and and the same with the FITZSIMMONS and One thing that That a pointed out to me quietly on the side is Then Jones exercise boys role hundred and sixty pounds or more and I yeah that's a that's a lot and he said They said well. You said you know you You don't You you you You don't doubt the hell out of him every day but you sit on them for an hour and that's one thing both Fitzsimmons in Jones. They would the horse would go out and be ridden for an hour. That is not done today. At all and What that does is it. Just get some strong without putting any undue stress on their on their legs and so forth but it gets their back strong and the the It's the back that vic collapses when the Horse Starts Tiring and it kind of collapses enough so then that puts all the pressure on the ligaments and then you start getting bowed tendons and all that kind of stuff. Well you avoid all that if you have a horse. Well conditioned and taking them out and Galvin and two miles is a waste of time Just things like that and Fitzsimmons said. Never give him a day off. Never get well. He said if they're sick or something like that but but never given the day off and Maybe if you're getting a horse ready for the triple crown and Those are those things are are But that doesn't mean you got the hell out of them everyday document trainer Billy Turner here on the Horse Racing Radio Network celebrating his eightieth birthday on this leap day here on February twenty-ninth Billy when you sit there today on your birthday and you think back on your career in all the success that you've had obviously Seattle slew is always going to hold a special place but is there another moment or two that. Come to mind that when you think back on your career that for whatever reason you're never gonNA forget well They probably right after she had US knew. I had a horse called Czarevich who is One of the first news agencies to Race on dirt in this country and And He was a. He was a very very tough for us to To to to handle because he he walked to the racetrack on his hind legs. Just like command and I I thought well I don't know anything about the case but I'll I'll just let him do that and He turned out to be a good horse. You only ran three thirteen times but he he won eight and he was second in the others. So there you go billy. I remember a few years ago when I was Belmont. Cover one of the triple crown. Say I guess maybe it was even American Feroz Year. You were kind enough to spend a little time with me in the radio booth and sit down for an interview and I told everybody you won't find a nicer person in horse racing than Billy Turner and you're kind enough to spend a little time with me here this morning too so I appreciate that and it was great to hear your voice and happy eightieth birthday. My friend anymore John died and no. Are you related to any of the pen? Is that that I know that. Bill modder trained to go online. I am not no angel. I get that question a lot. I am not related to to any of them although I grew up in western Massachusetts went to Saratoga Lot but no I never No never never was related to any of them dependence. Okay okay. Roy. Never had a chance to ask that question. Yeah no not at all duly. Listen I have to get to a commercial break but happy eightieth? My friend and many many more. Well thank you for calling me.

What do we do with this before we let you go? Your boy by the way on. Twitter had so much fun in that water today. The child's did you take the puppy out. Yeah he seems so happy. Oh man that's my thing off season. I try to do it in season two. But it's like a five mile walk through the woods here in Nashville. There's this area. That's just beautiful. Look at him I mean. Jeez he's poor Alabama with whom you say they're the team to beat in the SEC. West as we sit here right now yes I would too. Is it fair to say by the way I took some heat for this too by the way for this comment I made. But is it fair to say that a healthy healthy to a was the best chance to beat. Clemson I mean Lsu. Excuse me and Alabama was the best chance to beat to beat. Lsi the Christie's they came. Close I wouldn't mind seeing Ohio state second. Ohio state would have been fun to. I wouldn't mind just in fields against that defense with weapons he added Atwood. Jk and those receivers that would have been a great face said bringing the heat against Joe. "With Herbie Dan Palmer now. Here's your host Kevin Gandhi. The gang is all back together again. We had a couple of days to let the National Championship Marinate Renate and let it all sink in. I'm sure the Tigers are still partying that is of Lsu. As Orleans was Lenora was Lit Orleans it was a really good time despite not seeing much of the sun. We had a good time this weekend. I'm sure LSU fans are still celebrating. What we witness than watching Joe Borough guys It is a true pleasure and when you look back at the numbers. It's not so much I've heard some people say it wasn't the it was maybe the worst game of his career when you look at completion at least when we talk about this entire season but four sixty three and five touchdowns Are you kidding me. He was incredible earlier first. Thoughts on what you witnessed with. LSU winning the national championship. Well I think it's easy to look back and see that forty two twenty five and borough with yards as you said. His worst performance is still pretty productive. That's a little bit. Ah but go back to the beginning of that game and and you know the way Clemson prepared and the wrinkles that they gave them. I think it was the first three possessions fellas you all punts. They couldn't get anything going and he was running for his life. Because of the combination of players like Isaiah Simmons making plays but also the position that they were put in so they had to kind of go. I think it's very fitting in this year. Era of twenty nine thousand nine. We're Joe Brady. And Joe Borough and all those athletes made so many plays that they had to go back to the drawing board and say okay man. They're they're throwing his three one. Seven is penny coverage at us. What are we going to do? We've got to try to move here on the fly. And eventually they started to take shots down field they hit the first one to Jomar chase and they seem to find their answers and and get things going in fact he did they went from. What are we going to do or you know? We're down seventeen seven having to before the half. They're up twenty eight seventeen in the blink of an eye so that's a credit to them and it's kind of been who they really have been all year David but I think it's worth remembering not just boy. They are smoking cigars and other championship while they're dominant but they had they had to fight for this one. They had to make in game adjustments awesome. It's which makes me appreciate it that much more and by the way when when defense is run a penny defense on you and they bring all those. DB's ninety nine percent of the time. The answer is running the football right and they're like you know what we good. We got a guy back here. We'll go we'll go five wide out. We'll just chuck it around and play football. That's that's kind of amazing because that's the reason as a defensive guy. I don't get in that because I can't fit my run fits. It's really hard to stop the run in that and and Lsu is like now we're good good and just unbelievable to watch and listen we. We sell it all year long and we saw who we thought who could give you the best game and who could beat Lsu and in the end it was It was a tough task and nobody could do it. And that's why they'll go down as you know possibly the greatest team of all time and I know Kirk I've heard Kirk speak about it and I I can say you too. I just I've never seen all the pieces come together like this so perfectly now listen. They had receivers. They had a great tight and they had a back that who knew what the heck he could do. Nobody knew he could do that. And now you pair it all together with a perfect system. The perfect quarterback the perfect situation and and it was the perfect offense. It was the best dolphins I've ever seen. Jomar chase was incredible. I actually felt really bad for the CLEMSON. DB's and they had to make some adjustments. Venables did as Jamal was doing anything he wanted. And I thought their game plan and make sure Moss was involved early on to was such a big big strategic move because then you have to be responsible across. What's the middle? And then you have the outside open and that's what it felt like as the game was progressing and the offense was getting better field position. Yeah I I don't know what you guys David and I really didn't have a chance to talk after I think what you're saying saying makes a lot of sense. So even though they were in this penny. If you really go back and watch it he brent venables was overly aggressive so you know they. They had a lot of guys up tight and even told me before the game. You know it looks a little deceiving because you'd think that even against Ohio state when they played their base that's that's when Jackie Dobbins hit some creases on them. They went to that. You know what they would. At that time. They didn't necessarily go to a penny was more of a dime but they had they had three the. I'd look with three down linemen and it looks like while we can hit. Hit Him in the middle here but they F- attack with their inside linebackers to kind of fill those gaps and then the safeties teaser. Coming down as well so you you know. They kept leaving Jomar chase ingest in Jefferson and tears marshall on islands. And you know the confidence for instance. Joe Borough has. It's like okay. Which one of my guys are you not GonNa put a safety overtop because whoever you're not gonNA put a safety over top just you know? We're going to put them the slot. We're going down field and we're basically going to take that anytime we get it so like I said it to me. This was kind of it was the very symbolic of the nineteen season. And it'll be our lasting image. Just seeing those receivers going down field making plays and reminding us of what you know. The first time I really saw that was when they went to Austin and they got challenged. And everybody thought okay. Let's see how good this new so-called LSU offense really he is and they made it made it pretty loud statement that weekend and it just carried throughout the year and and just kind of a combination. I thought In this game and by the way to fold Texas fans who think we play Joe Borough really great. That wasn't the same offense that the news continued to grow and get better in jail together and have answers and continue to improve along the season. So don't please don't send me still scores and tell me that Texas played them great and all that good stuff. ooh You don't get apple. People don't say they seriously saying Oh God yes you know how that works but listen. Another cost a caution Russian to every offense coordinator or cautioned to every football. Fan Out there. If you think you can just go five wide now and spread the ball around and have a mobile quarterback that that's pretty mobile. And you think that's the answer to solve everything. This isn't anomaly. This is not something. We've never never seen this before. Because there's a reason because of Joe Borough not only is he accurate by the way stupid accuracy. That just you couldn't go down the field and handed the people people want better. He doesn't get rattled and that was one thing that again down. Seventeen seven getting hit a lot kirk off it's of line not protecting Liam Great. He gets hit. It's almost like he gets pissed off. You're gonNA hit me okay. Like come up. Does let's go. Let's get enroll and just you know it's it's having the answers at tight end and having the answers in the slot and having answers at running back and having all these guys that come together for the perfect fit you can't you can't say this offense next year all the sudden is going to be ridiculous somewhere else and you try to replicate. What is this was literally the perfect fusion together at the right time in the right moment that it can't be duplicated again? He can't be implicated in people. Got Up people better. Hesitate if they're GONNA do that. I'm glad you brought that up because I mean we we touched on on it but I think it's good to just kind of close off this year with just a reminder as you just did that I think it's just a perfect storm. It's the system of Joe Brady coming over from drew drew brees and the saints okay. So he brings that system. Full progression reads now for people. That don't understand what that means college quarterbacks. Most College quarterbacks quarterbacks are GonNa read half the field they're going to read that flat defender they're gonna read man coverage they might guys that are two and three years experience they might be able to work to the middle of the field but even then you got a tied in running a crosser. The linebacker comes up. You hit maybe a bender behind that. But it's simple stuff stuff in most college quarterbacks to me there's only two two and Joe Borough who's WHO's a master's degree in this have the ability to read and comfortably off of A to B to C. It's like your phone like if you have four G.. And other people have three g you know Joe. Boroughs brain works almost like a five G.. And so when you bring in a new system and you've got five receivers out on almost every route and you've got Joe Borough. Oh who's over at the film room like an offense of analyst or an offensive assistant coach. He's a he's a graduate student. who takes all his classes online? He's honestly according to him and and Joe Brady. He's at the facility as much as Joe Brady so you have you have that. You have a quarterback that has an ability to understand every blitz every coverage that. You're going to throw at him so he's GonNa know what to do with the football when he sees the coverage in he'll go bing bing bing bank and and there there just aren't even Trevor Right now is growing in that capacity. You look at him at six six to twenty first pick overall but his mind isn't isn't yet where fifth year senior like. Joe Borough is so I'm with you. It's a perfect storm. You can't just. Hey let's go visit Joe Brady and put this offense in it. Takes the quarterback order back to understand it and have the time to put into study the film and understand blitzes and then you need Clyde Edwards Allaire unique thaddeus moss terrorists. Marshall you need you chase Brady Show Brady will go to Cincinnati and he will I dress with that he has around him other than Aj Green. He will take a step step back. Think about that. He's playing with better personnel and college did he'll play when he goes to the NFL. I mean I think that says is it all right there. And he's going against college defenses compared to the NFL borough lightning in a bottle twenty three years old the difference between him and Trevor Lars. We'll get the trevor in a second but I wanNA get your final thoughts on this season. It's a story book thing sixty touchdown passes guys I. It's just incredible the perspective especially who they've played we're not talking about you. Know the the old Houston. You Know David Klingler. You're just you're run-and-shoot in shoot and just throw the ball up in about the defense they the ACC is right. And and we're talking about a guy that has sixty touchdown passes is any caps it off with the Heisman and the National Jab Jab. Is this the greatest season. Is this the greatest season for quarterback. It's gotTa be right David I I mean you could put the David Klingler guys a plan. Those running shoots their numbers. Tommy Chang or somebody like that the whole put crazy numbers owners but I as you said. It's just so different man. This is such a different states. Throwing the ball downfield. It's not running. Shoot you know throwing the ball two yards downfield and and getting sixty completions a game. This is this is big boy stuff like this is throwing the ball vertically and making reads and I I. It's the best performance I've seen the best offense that I've seen not just as a guy who covers it last twenty four years twenty five years as a player going back to being a fan. I mean I thought was offense. Last year was was outstanding. They obviously weren't able to finish it off. I mean they're moments last year where they were just scoring. It will but we live in. We live in a different era right. I mean going back to the fifties sixties seventies eighties nineties. The offense is they didn't they didn't think this way they didn't attack this way and so I think it's a little bit unfair to compare offenses to going back to that Arab but in the last twenty or thirty years I can't think of anything that's been. Impressive is what we witnessed this year with. Twenty nine hundred tigers team. That'd be two four six seven eight by the way they beat all all all all of those teams Joe Joe Borough had the second. Highest completion percentage. In the history of college football most touchdown passes a history of college football most total touchdowns threw for fifty six hundred yards second-best Qbr while facing seven of the top forty defenses in the country..

"Didn't today another program that I think is going to turn the corner here and you can correct me if I'm wrong and that is Oregon when I turned the corner. It's just what Mario Cristobal has done with changing the identity of the program. And you know the chance to watch at the Rose Bowl. What he's done for me? I thought it was a great game game but it's really important for Oregon to win that game for the PAC twelve and it was. I mean why the yeah just for the national conversation sation or the landscape the PAC twelve for the third consecutive year being left out of the College Football Playoff It says something now that all can change next year if Oregon does their the thing and upset and week to all of a sudden they're often running in their back into the College Football playoff but it it it it says something because I think the the Rose Bowl other other than the the two National Nasty Semi Finals in the National Championship still is a bowl game. That exists where people take note who wins it. WHO's playing in it Both teams Oregon and West Wisconsin. Wisconsin loses conference championships gets in Oregon could have lost the conference championship and still gotten and so for some. It may not have been the massive. They were looking for but it was special and to see Justin Herbert decided to spurn the NFL. Come back set. Those goals to win the PAC twelve championship To win a rose bowl and and accomplish that I it's gotta be really special for the young man now that he's going to enter the NFL draft and see what next and the physicality that you saw from the Oregon. Line both off a defense again. It's just different from the identity that we knew earlier in the decade from the ducks wchs in the offense from chip. Kelly and I think it's crystal ball is doing something really special in Eugene setting that up Does it bug you. Does it bug you. How the country tree views the PAC twelve sometimes to a certain extent especially during bowl season? Yeah I mean I played in the conference And they don't help themselves that much. That's you know they. They decided to go. They decided to go their own way when it comes to their network The content that they put out there They've had some opportunities to do something differently. There was a nine. Am Pacific kickoff time that there was discussed this year and they decided not to go with it I think that would have benefited some to get just get their product out there in in front of more people and show them how fun and entertaining. I think they did really well. In the bowl games they went four and three I thought that was pretty good You know but I don't necessarily feel too bad Because I think there are a still a good product I call it the conference of cannibalism. They're just really competitive. Thinking they beat each other up and nine conference games plus the tenth with a conference championship. I mean you're unless somebody unless there's some consequences against let's say the ACC and the SEC to change. I think that the other conferences have to go the other way right. They gotta play on the because if Oregon doesn't have the players on the state Instead of waiting Sanford or somebody or the citadel in that week We're talking about an Oregon team probably in the College Football playoff before before we let you go here. You know. We're watching the game. We talk a little bit about it on earlier on the podcasts. Were watching this game. We're watching Clemson and Ohio state back and forth fourth and I I love how transparent you are and how candid you are about things but still it you know and I know your history of add the chance to talk to you several times on Sports Center through the years years in your journey but like you were so candid about one topic and I just sat there and I was like what we were talking about your time in jail in prison and and this this concept of what you had to do in prison and can we. Are you okay with expanding a little bit about that journey where aware you were a few years ago to where you are right now because I know you do some reflection on twitter when you look at your family and the growth of your family and what you want big term long term plans like. Could you ever imagine that you would be in this position when you were in prison on those dark days. A little gosh no cabin. Yeah I've been I mean uh you know six years ago. I was in a prison so bright and And I thought I thought I I was hopeless You know even when I walked out of prison I I didn't know what was ahead. I had developed this hope because of the things I had done impressed oppressed in prison and that was to be a service to other people People that that that couldn't give me any right that that I was just helping another human being and that that transformed how I looked at things that's still didn't mean I was going to have any success and it it that that had that would never you would not know that would to play out especially in the form of of of me You know working for the Disney Corporation. I mean that's that was the furthest thing from my mind. The only thing I wanted to do stay clean stay out of jail and and and be a productive member of my community something. I didn't think I had been my whole life and it was going to be about about About the service of others and that's where it started it started in a sober living environment in Los Angeles helping individuals who you know. Oh didn't quite know what their life was gonna look like they just. They had some hope and they didn't know where it was going to go. And it starts with one step and then you keep taking those steps and you do the same thing over and over and then some day you get a call from ESPN and they say hey. Would you like the job doing something that that that you'd love to do your whole life and that's called football games. I I remember when I got out of prison. And Kinda put together a goal sheet of what I wanted to do and you know one of them was like I love to do. What Curve Street does I mean? Who wouldn't but I mean that that was that would be a dream for me right to talk about the game that gave me everything that I love and then to travel around the country country and be around? These beautiful cathedrals Stay feature like stadiums and the players the coaches and the atmosphere and the pageantry hatching tree. And all of it. You're telling me that's a possibility. Well this is how it starts right that you reach out to people that you feel like you may have burned bridges a long time ago Turns out you didn't Tim's out they they care about you they They want what's best for you and you ask the likes occur street Brady Brady Quinn Greg mcelroy. Ask those guy taken I can. I come watch how you guys do this and and see if I could do it and and and and be can be any good at it you know and and I answered those two things and and it's about showing up and that's how it turns out I got the job because of My preparation my engagement when I went and shadowed Greg mcelroy and some some of the higher ups here at Espn Talk to the director the producer and and and impassioned mcelroy Bowl said. Wow Guy was guy new stuff was engaging could have been right in the mix and sure enough. I got that call so sometimes you have no idea who your referral is going to be. It's about how you treat other people and those were things I didn't do. Well you know I. It was always always about me and I knew that when I got out of prison that at no point any further could it ever be about me again now. That's an easier thing to say than do. Do you have to practice that in your life and then when you have a child and that comes out that that that puts it in the motion completely right it. It's all about somebody. It has nothing to do with you and I think that's got me going in the right direction. And what was so cool about that Saturday in Phoenix with with you and everybody else a lot of the guys that I that I met the seminar and I was really looking forward to working with and and being pierced with. I didn't get to see the whole year because I was traveling. The country working on games and we all stood around on that silent. We all watched. What was one of the coolest things in the world is too great teams play and we got to know each other better and I think that's the that's the best thing about all this and I certainly wouldn't have had that capability ability You know back in the day when I was at different version of myself because I just wouldn't have been open to to talk to somebody asking about their life and their family and how they're doing. I was always about. Hey can you. How how special I was? And that's certainly certainly not the life. I WANNA lead anymore. Well right we are lucky to call you a teammate. It's been great seeing you on. This journey continued to grow. I'm glad that I'm glad he snuck in that. Rose Bowl that That they would curb street. They got the chance to To to follow Herbie Herbie's great honestly Thank you for joining us here. The podcast I know you've got other things to do you carve out some time between TV and you're the Radio Geoghegan once again. That happy New Year. I'm sure I'll talk to you New Orleans you back Kevin. Thanks for having me on big. Thank you Ryan Lee for joining us there and thank you sharing his story and a variety of topics I think he has such a unique perspective and he gave a great message..

Cowboys to move on without Jason Garrett

"Jason Garrett's time up as coach of the Dallas Cowboys Edward a reporting Jerry Stephen Jones have decided coach will not be part of the organization moving forward on Friday and paid Simmons on why this process lasted so long after the season to other Jerry and Stephen Jones have moved slowly out of respect for Jason Garrett you know they have a long history with him as a backup quarterback you to this is that coach a head coach's father was in the organization when Jerry bapa team as a scout and they finally concluded that phase of this process and that's going to end with Jason Garrett not being a part of the organization beyond his expiring contract and when exactly they make that announcement I thought sure what I've been told soon and that the next phase will have them moving into the process of interviewing candidates in the battle begin quickly after phase one is totally finished off yes was contract set to expire January fourteenth status with the team at issue since last February the cowboys didn't give a contract extension they missed the playoffs in twenty nineteen finish eight neighbor the four time in his tenure as coach Keyshawn Johnson on the job candidates and Jerry Jones himself he was on sports and we stand ready to make a decision on it there was the eight their long term in the obvious would clearly felt that their work you say while they waited till Thursday well the food that just won't really it just is so you kind of say okay take a deep breath we get back to the facilities we talk about a little bit we think about we pondered overnight we need or Thursday we meet on Tuesday we meet on Wednesday we have a conversation and we finally so you know women the best thing for us to do if not give the public what they looking for what they looking for me to do is be extremely mad and walk out of there on Sunday night if fire you on the tarmac so instead of doing that this call wait a couple days are you playing for the cowboys you're familiar with Jerry Jones and and and his thinking all what happens next now in this search for the next cowboys head coach I think a guy like Mike Zimmer Minnesota Vikings head coach could potentially be a candidate you say how could that be well I I II coach there in the deepest corner along try defensive coordinator for Jerry Jones is the bill Parcells fact either stay here they know what they're getting in that particular coach but also there's a young officer coordinator in cabin step band he this sitting there in Minnesota the Minnesota Vikings don't want to part ways with him they don't want him all of a sudden start to get interviews and become a category another team so I would be surprised if somehow might dimmer wind up being the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in the cabinet she takes over as the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings so a lot of story lines this call come about here over the next with date but I think this time around you will get the head coaching job right where the coach may be season one more before we go do you think that at this point Jerry Jones is ready to surrender more control to a head coach now then he has been willing to in the past as bill Parcells left and and I want to turn this on your stamina I am right now status is not a defense Jerry Jones was some what he is and even as well as we clay as well as Jerry junior what is your you Jones gone wrong with that organization other than the head coaching hire that's a very good question that's very good everybody everybody everybody said here you're you're here the one on that team thank you for calling the latter team for the National Football League I would I would argue and say that their top five channels it is four tally dole is a National Football League the problem is that head coach because you're you're not holding the plate yeah well that gives the player is a free pass for having innate need season the talent on the field didn't win enough games he and Garrett will finish as the second longest tenured and second most winningest coach in team history Tom Landry a record of eighty five and sixty seven the wonders to playoff games unable to get past the divisional round Mike wells Myron Medcalf on Freddie Fitzsimmons the Dallas Cowboys there you know they draw attention but the the the days of being America's team and wanted to be part of what is age and it's not the same anymore it is not the same strictly because of what you have to deal with away from just coaching of football team is not simply you know put together a strong staff the coaster brakes of Amari Cooper Ezekiel Elliott and dak Prescott it's also having the answer constant questions from your boss the owner Jerry Jones deck could become a headache when you're you can't simply just focus on the task of putting your team in the proper position the try to have success there's a side show that comes with it and some people are built or not built to be able to deal with that so you got to find the right coach who is not only a great Exynos guy but somebody who's mentally strong enough to handle the constant you know looking over the shoulders and the pestering of your boss meddling in the inside of things wonder why things are not going well or to give us suggestions on what you should be doing that's not something easy that everybody can handle that type of situation well it and not everybody wants it and that's why I think a lot of these cultures your Matt rules related rallies urban Meyer's why except that to me if you're not going to modernize the structure of your organization so that your owner can do what every other owner does and take a backseat and not be this forward facing figure who's hosting its own press conferences after the game sometimes undermining the head coach then then how can you expect to attract a great candidate bomb out rule no one eight I'm leaving Baylor I got a chance to build something there if I'm leak in Raleigh I'm in Oklahoma and every year I get a chance to go to the college football playoff leave in Oklahoma where I can coach for another decade at least about continue to succeed ever murmur Meyer I'm not leaving LA or on the TV analyst making good money watching a lot of football injuries bouncing around the country see a lot of teams to go to Dallas where I've got a deal with Jerry that's why I think it's going to be difficult if Jerry Jones wants to continue to be Jerry Jones I don't think Mike he's going to end up with any of the top candidates identifying potential replacements Bobby carpenter and fox college football reporter Bruce Feldman gas on Freddie impede Simmons Stephen Jones Jerry Jones offered that coaching job urban Meyer she would say I think that's a hard job to say no urban probably wouldn't be needing to be for another year is that all you but who knows enough the big job at the glamorous job and remember the nose you know damn owns his courage and damn ongoing expound acted it all back thank god yeah I was supposed to do the oil itself journal part of mine and to buy that it was offered so you're going to want to meet your need to guide it was a proven track record we've done it before who's been in the playoffs the only guy that I look at the newest hires cycle that's really available is Mike McCarthy and it's free thank god I'm not that I'm not the biggest Mike McCarthy stand the world but he's the only guy that it holds no one Barty and that is the only thing that Jerry Jones once he is getting older is that you know you if you spend more And Hey while you're at it don't be afraid to go. Oh for two. I've made L. Back there with Ryan McGee as we remember the people we lost in College football the world the twenty team this one a little bit partial to May I did not know John Ralston. Who was the head coach at Utah State Stanford and San Jose State but having gone under Stanford? I certainly heard might share of stories about John Ralston he he was at Stanford for nine seasons from nineteen sixty three to seventy seventy one in his career. There is a fascinating look at what call of all used to be his first five seasons at Stanford the Indians Indians as they were known back then went twenty four twenty five and one and you know I'm the coach. Today who could survive fast seasons with that record in in his next four seasons at Stanford you went thirty one eleven in two and won the Rose Bowl twice. So maybe there's a lesson listen to be learned. They are more. I'm guessing it's more like a just a snapshot of an earlier time. But Orion is one of my favorite this one of my favorite college football antidotes and include it pertains to John Ralston. It was a beloved and director of admissions at Stanford and Fred Haagen and below the specially. Because he was a director of admissions when I got it by but everybody else loved him and he told the story a few years ago shortly before he died about John Ralston and eh and said that the only coach in his career who ever tried to bribe him was Was Roulston. He said he would he he would get a call eleven in the morning. And you'd say Fred. I'm coming over at noon to talk about recruiting candidates. What kind of sandwich would you like? I would say ham and cheese John. He said he would come over. And Raulston was unfailingly positive. I mean he was a did. I L Carnegie Guy from the get-go no matter what happens so he was in there trying to convince are on a do except they were running back who was never gonNA get into Stanford and On Five said I'm really sorry John. There's no way we we can take this guy. Ralston's response was well. That's Okay Fred. He's going to be in our backfield one way or another next year the question I heard I heard that so that it pertained to two different players players and one was Russell White was the great running back at cow in the seventies and the other was that it it pertained to running back at USC from the early seventies but but either way John Ralston. Pack twice in seventy and seventy one fine. Both Times won upset. Victories in Roseville a house state one year Michigan the next and he is a beloved figure at the farm arm. While we're in that Conference Ryan Dick Tomey the Such a a fixture at Arizona for many years in the eighties and nineties. Dick Tomey twenty nine seasons as a head coach at Hawaii Arizona. An as with Roulston San Jose state one of the great defensive coaches of last generation. He went one hundred. Eighty three games at the schools. Sent players like Rob Waltrip Tedy Bruschi risky to the college. Football Hall of fame and led Arizona to it's only PAC ten championship the wildcats all cats shared the nineteen ninety. Three PAC. Ten title did not go to the Rose Bowl because Ucla wet and of course that season Ucla loss to Wisconsin and the Rosebowl while Arizona humiliated Miami end in his Eric in twenty nine nothing. Nothing was the worst loss. That's actually had six seasons of the year and I'm how stunning that game was us because it was obviously you're talking about you're talking about the U Early Nineties and and it was obvious they played a certain brand of football and Arizona played. You know that that hard nosed defensive brand football and I don't think anyone expected that to happen and then it was one of those years where we all walked away thinking man. What if that team have been addressable? But that's just the way of the World two games. I remember in that period. In addition to that one the year before Arizona ended Washington's winning streak Washington in One share the national championship in nineteen eighteen. Ninety one and a late in nineteen ninety. Two Washington came down to Tucson in Arizona spanked him sixteen to three again. A tremendous medicine offensive performance. And then after that day massive at twenty nine and the Miami Arizona began the nineteen ninety four season in the top ten but open the season at Penn state and can state just just rogue great him and of course thousand one thousand nine hundred ninety four and Penn state as it turned out the one thousand nine hundred fourteen one of the great teams of of the decade went undefeated that year. But Dick Tomey Also added in one team in Arizona in nineteen ninety eight. They finished fourth in the country. Again did not didn't even share the PAC ten title. Ucla went unbeaten in the league. That year beat Arizona. The only other thing I wanted to say about they told me is one of my favorite people in and maybe I should have said this from the get go. Just one of my favorite people. In College football he was unfailingly feelingly interesting But but friendly polite intelligent always enjoyed interviewing and talking to doing my I last saw him in the San Jose state press box two or three years ago would San Jose say open the season against South Florida and I was always in the bay area and I went to the game and and and and Dick was there he he was Just a wonderful guy. His wife Nancy Kincaid always at his side and I bring Nancy up only because she wrote a novel about that was entitled Balls Calls and it remains the best book fiction or not ever written about what. It's like to be married to football coach whilst happens to be a novel. But if you've never read Balls Nancy Thin K by all means please do but I always think about that. I was saying that ninety eight teams but what I really. They would like to have been around that team in the nineties. Just to be in the coaches meetings because you had dino babies at one point pat oil is is one of the most lively Wacko people in the history of college football. I just can't imagine being in a room with some of those I it's a really is a pretty amazing coaching tree. But then he's a guy who spent time with Dick from hill and most of them back lawyer and Terry Donahue and so it's it's What I've always thought about that ninety eighteen because it was a weird they lost that? UCLA game wasn't close and into the twentieth royal right but then ended the year the one loss was ucla and actually ended the year ranked higher that UCLA. It was a it was just one of those nights rates were just. Something's just off and if not for that game they wouldn't play for National Championship. Yeah you would love to seen team like that in fourteen playoff era but Dick Tomey is Really the the Lhasa Dictum really said still L. Saddens me another coach. Who won about as many games and coached as long as the Comey? George Welsh one hundred ninety nine victories in twenty nine seasons at navy his Alma Mater where he finished third in the nineteen fifty five heisman. Rice behind hop along Cassidy But more famously. As the coach at Virginia where he took the cavs to their only number one ranking in college football in nineteen ninety and and as well they shared the nineteen eighty. Nine title with Steve Spurrier Duke and share Nineteen ninety-five title with Bobby Bowden in Florida state. WHO's loan loss that season? I think they're all loss was to Virginia India on a Thursday night. He coach Walsh is spent as much time around him as probably any head coach growing up like going to games in the ACC eighties and the nineties and there was an intensity level to hell that he he was militaristic is he earned that the the old fashioned way with his navy background. But I don't I say this all the time. You're not talking about this when it comes to Oregon when it comes to Kansas State when it comes to some of these programs that an entire generation rationale just takes for granted. They're pretty good at football. Nate or Virginia was so bad for so long and and he turned around and did it it really quick period of time of the Nineteen Ninety Virginia team is one of the best teams. No one remembers and Sean was quarterback and Herman Moore was was the like they had. They had a killer defense in the forgotten. Greatest game in the history of the Virginia that. You're the Georgia Tech. Virginia Game and Virginia was number one as you said for the first time. Ever Georgia tech ended up winning a share of the National Championship. But that's one of the greatest games I've ever seen Gene forty-one yeah people forget about it but it was. It was Xiaobo hasn't forgotten about it. He that was in that game. They don't they remember it but it was. But yes the the word that always pops into my mind when it comes to catch Welsh's intensity oh you you said militaristic word our Dallas Taciturn. That's it yeah. Yeah he was. It was tough to get a smile out of it but This terrific coach. And exactly the right guy you know we talk about sit all the time and called volleys. Exactly what but Virginia needed at a time when it was just so downtrodden but that that Virginia Georgia tech the week of that game as was Halloween week one of the most memorable week surly my career. I think I've spent most of that week in Charlottesville and and just what. Ah what a terrific college football event that that game was Mike. McGee the nineteen fifty nine outland trophy winner the Duke and and more important A head coach at his Alma Mater as well as East Carolina in a longtime ad not at Cincinnati USC and South Carolina might McKee died this year. And what I remember Mike McGee for Ryan at you knew better than I did. I doing a little bit. But he was the guy who hired He hired Mike Gottfried at Cincinnati with was a pretty good move Larry Smith at USC. Not so great. But not bad. And then most famously. After Hiring Brad Scott at South Carolina and that didn't work out he brought Lou Holtz and then Steve Spurrier to Columbia. Which of course worked out? Really well yeah. It worked out really well L. and Hired Dave Oedema basketball. Hi Ray Tanner. Who's now the athletic director as the baseball coach and won National Championships in the College World Series and and Mike Mike Mike McGee's and North Carolinian? He's born in Elizabeth City. Way Out on the coast. But you know I don't mean to make this all about my family but in this case I wanNa tell you store that Mike McKee love to hear which is the fact that my father's Jerry McGee who was.

"Contributions to American Football Award N.. TCU named the press box at aiming car stadium. It's the DANJEAN's crosswalks. In late. This season I covered a TCU game in mark. Cohen has been mass idea that forever and just absolutely absolutely love Dan. Dan Loved Him was telling me that after the name of the press box for the family all came by game and Dan Esmar Arpaio said. Well is it okay. I need this many seats in the press. Box and bans may marks. The ban is your press you can have but he had parking spot right next to the chancellor in the bowels of aim and Carter Stadium that was the regard. TCU held in. Gary Patterson loved him the longtime head coach at Tcu. and rather than me trying to pick out if I I think both of us if we tried to to pick out our favorite Dan Jenkins lines we despite gas could go on forever but I would just suggest to everyone that Pick up his book Saturday's America which is a great distillation of White College. Football was in the in the sixties and early Seventies. He's or if you have a subscription to sports illustrated GOTO SL DOT com slash vault Amri his stories because his story of the nineteen seventy-one Nebraska long game remains one of the Best College football stories of written. He presaged becoming a great recruiting wars of the last generation. Where the story about Jack Miller? Who became the all America quarterback of I don't own Collagen in the late sixties early seventies and Dansk part At the Million House in Abilene and and talk about everybody who came through so Dan Jacob which was certainly a real blow to those of us who grew up reading him? The loss of Dan Jenkins really a sad and tragic loss in college football. Paul Rod Bramlett. The Voice of the Tigers died in an automobile crash. This year. Best known of course for his calls of they kicked six. And the and and the Georgia Hail Mary Georgia victory two weeks before the kick six magical two thousand thirteen eighteen season but Bramlett has been an auburn had been at Auburn Four. And we're just so identified with that university such a Nice Guy Just a tragic loss of Rod Bramlett this year. Well in a dear friend and You it's it's a it's a reminder. I was at Auburn twice this past fall. And it's the first football season without him and we went set in his radio booth where he had the call of the kick six One of the greatest calls of one of the greatest players in the history college football and and in the conversation that I had with his family and friends was about the fact it. You know four turney. As long as they're playing college football we're going to hear Rob Bramlett voice because of that play and because of other places but that one in particular and it's just what Rod store reminds. John's me is that should remind all of us is tomorrow is not guaranteed because the tree and his wife were just down the road and and it was was over and so a good friend and a good man and his voice is going to echo in that stadium as long as it standing there longtime voice voice of the Kansas Jayhawks Max. `Bolkenstein died of this year. Max I think he covered the Jayhawks. When James Naismith and mm-hmm Bennett basketball? He'd been there about that long. And I max was a great example of the way that announcers play by play guys become beloved by Fan Bases. He he was at Kansas forever. And you couldn't think really you can't do that without thinking of that. Yeah and I've I've said this before and you and I both do this. Our favorite thing to do on a Friday night when we're in town curry game is to scroll today in radio and listen to high school sports and I love the fact that when you go to Kansas. It doesn't matter Outta his last game was in two thousand six but you ride around and listen to high school basketball or football on. AM radio anywhere in the state of Kansas. It is in everyone's sounds exactly like Max Baucus because he's the guy he's he's Voice of generations and so it's a love the fact that I mean it was it was a sixty years. He was a sportscaster. So I love the fact that everyone's voice down there. They sound exactly like him the media. Yeah personage I wanNA dimension Don Bernstein. who was the Was the media contact for. ABC Sports in the Heyday of ABC Z.. Sports as the network of College football don started out on the West Coast. as SIB at a UC. Santa Barbara as well as at Washington and then he came to New York for the network. He was this thing wonderful man or they allowed Tom bombastic voice but self friendly so helpful when the BCS came came into being in the nineties and they needed a season a guy who knew the media in new the sport they hire Don Bernstein to help be the voice of of the BCS Senate did provide some credibility for those of us. Who are trying to figure you're out whether this was a legitimate thing or or just some cockamamie excuse to screw up the ball system but it was it was it was a delight the Dow is just a friendly guy? Knew everybody in the sport and Really a fixture sure he will be missed. A new everybody period was sit. There arose a Gatty who worked at at ESPN and they are forever introduced me. Him and in the course of a conversation would talk about something. Vince Lombardi told him or working with Bob. Eiger now all of our bosses at Disney. And would you talk about this matter of fact and it was just it was it was it was so disarming disarming about it that you'd walk away later did he just tell me a story about hanging out with this Lombardo super bowl one because I think he did and I missed it because for him it it was just life. Yes yeah now he was just a wonderful man and I'm so sorry he's gone. Let's get get back to the field guy that was better known as a player that he was as a coach but really an important figure figure in the history of the last generation of college. Football Force. Gray was an offensive lineman on Lombardi's great packer teams the sixties. is in the pro football hall of fame. Four that play a plate. SMU and when you came back from the death penalty in the in the late eighties and early nineties in meeting somebody whose character was is beyond reproach in new new football in could instill a physical tough brand of play to get. SMU YOU TRY TO GET SMU back up to speed from scratch. They went too far. SCRAG and He was He he he did a nice job. It took a long time for you to win. And he didn't win a lot there but he he gave his all mater instinct credibility. I'll always remember. There was was almost a a rectitude about him in the way he handled himself and there was just there was a right way and a wrong way to do things and I was always on the right side of that line and I always think about in my opinion. Maybe the greatest thirty for thirty that was ever produced and that was the the pony access. Excess that they did about Smu always think about. There's this one unbelievable shot a far. That sums up exactly what you're talking about. which is it's all this chaos and this and that happened and you know free Mazdas in cash and all of a sudden and then when it was time to come back and do it the right way? A all they did was they cut to a shot forrest Gregg sitting there with his super bowl radio and all you saw was a man that was like this man is not going to put that up with anything from anyone I always think about. I don't know if it was the first or second year that. SMU Is back and they played Houston. And this was at the height of the run-and-shoot run-and-shoot the first year the first year eighty nine. Right and Andre Ware. Had A half a dozen touchdown passes and Klingler. Had I think almost that the second half David Klingler did and forrest Gregg would not shake jake parties because he said that's again. That's not how you do this. And and and that he just had that look on his face he's the most Texas looking face that there's ever bad that's a man to put up with nothing from anyone. It was a Mount Rushmore. More face the score that Dan was Houston Ninety five. SMU TWENTY-ONE I'll ask of US first year back after the death penalty. I remember it was close to one hundred. I forgot I was nine. Yeah Yeah and and Greg was only coached two seasons. They won three games in those two seasons but but he provided the balanced that that program needed and speaking of of a rectitude different forum because it was a charming man. And I got another you do for many many years James Robertson who was not only an official ACC but the longtime faculty athletic representative that. Virginia Tech. Yeah we call it a but and just last week at the SEC championship game. We had the opportunity to have duly Omari McGee e and the first thing. That coach Dooley said to me. was he said I am so sad about the death about Robertson and but but Robertson some was. The referee was the white hat. Vinci's last game. The gator bowl guess was eighty nine ninety and and but Robertson was was all due respect to shelby foote But Robertson was the expert on the civil war and would travel the world and people would travel. AH The world to get to him just for the knowledge off the top of his head about that I mean Pulitzer nominee. I mean this is a man that and then and went out and officiated football games on Saturday afternoons. He was. Oh my my father is talking about all the time was an ACC official forever and Robertson. It Dad were on the same crew For a while and but Robertson Dr Robertson was always the one that you pointed to to say everybody in section two thirty one you can scream and yell l.. About how stupid. The referees are at this point but the reality is the smartest man on the field. The smartest man in the stadium with the white hat on right so yell all all you want but he has about nineteen college degrees and and spent last week at Gettysburg and lectures. That's wonderful..

"Official drank a fans. Ville grab some today but college football podcast with Herbie and pollick. Now here's your host Kevin. I am not Kevin The gone the IM Ivan is l.. Sitting in for Kevin Today and I am joined by my longtime friend and colleague Ryan McGee as we do what has come to the I. I'd say enjoyable I. It would sounds I'd given the subject but an enjoyable custom at the end of the year. We remember the college football personages who have died over the previous twelve months and and Ryan. I know you feel the way I do that. These are people that have populated our lives lives and and we feel like it's A. It's not a duty. At least the responsibility to remember them for what they gave to the sport. Yeah Ah duty is the right word because what it just. I take this seriously I think you do too because You know as as with a lot of things during the CFP one fifty season. It's an opportunity to educate people on names that they might not know or maybe something they will learn about a name that they did. No that's right and and the other thing is that there there are a lot of people waited opt out because we don't want this podcast to go on for hours and it's It's unfortunate but we're going to try to get to as many people as we can and this period of time and and to start with it was a in an unusual year a suppose sad year in the fact that we lost three heisman trophy winners and twenty morning. Nineteen Joe Beleno may of maybe running back who won it in nineteen sixty and was was remember primarily because he was a great player maybe he did play a low professional football which was not a a resounding success in pro. Oh Ball but boy that he had a great certainly great nineteen sixty season rush for eight hundred twenty four yards. Fourteen eighteen touchdowns he caught four touchdown passes. He was a partner lawyer. Quick Kicker. He returned kicks and was remembered especially for how well he played against army. He scored five touchdowns in three years against army and Mostly mostly Ryan in the nineteen sixty game late in the game. He fumbled at the navy. Seventeen setting up army army to steal the game and then turned around in those days where some guys play. Both ways made an interception interception at the goal line to preserve game. Joe Beleno is a I certainly navy hero. I remember when I was a student student Tennessee and worked on the film crew. And all this. We're ingesting all his old classic film and transferring video or the few schools that can do that and I remember. Regina majors came in one day. And he's like what the greatest catch you guys I've ever seen and we're like. I don't know coach. so-and-so everything. We came up with in the last five years coach majors. Your homework assignment is to find the last catch at the end of the nineteen sixty one orange bowl navy Missouri. I got left and so now we're trying to find old film we're calling ours poll and we're calling Missouri and and It was a catch. Bob Beleno In the end zone and It was the last game and it was. It was one of those ridiculous catches I've ever seen and and that's that's how even learn who he wasn't the first place. Listen all you have to do it in the day. If you play at Navy or Army is they ask you. How did you you perform the Auburn game? Pretty good it was pretty good and Was it quite Clyde man. He did not. He did not Where his heisman? Trophy as Hey look at me ally. He lived quietly in new. England died shortly after after returning to eighty one in March and was the one of as I said. One of three heisman trophy winners. The first of three data satis year. The second was I believe. The oldest living heisman winner Howard cassidy was his given name. Although nobody nobody called was obviously known as hop along cassidy. Obvious if you grew up and that day when there was a star of of both movies and radio was an actor who played a character named hop along cassidy. And how hop along cassidy the running back act for Ohio. State grew up in the Columbus area was not particularly big but he was a terrific athlete. Average five over five and a half yards a carry for Woody Hayes and By this Woody Hayes. Once said Cassidy was an enormously effective runner because he ran in a straight line which meant he got from point. A. Point B. Very quickly. You know what he's mine. It was a sin to veer toward the sideline but he said cassidy shot through the line so fast that nobody could get a crack at him. He was a The the bell cow for the Buckeye national champions his junior year the year that solidified woody's grasp on that job in nineteen fifty four. And and get this. He was not only a terrific running back but he also played outfield for the Buckeyes in nineteen fifty four. They won the National Championship in football. And then at night in the spring of fifty five he hit three twenty seven eleven and played outfield. For the Buckeyes. Won The big ten baseball title. Pretty good. Yeah not bad at all and Ohio state was a bit of a baseball power. Our back in those days and and I don't know if the story is true or not but I was a put Ohio state actually the week that he passed away and the store that I I was told was that there was one day in practice and Cassidy was trying to run this. One particular play. Typical House state in the middle of the field running play. And it just kind of wasn't going anywhere and so- Woody Hayes plugs in the backup running back who runs the play perfectly. Takes off down the field and woody Hayes says to cassidy. Did you see that. He's slow enough to make the play work. You're going too fast. It's true or not but that's the story. I was told in the football building. The very wiki passed away. That's terrific cassidy. Befriended a friend in somehow and it had to do with Ohio state because George Steinbrenner was a football coach in the big ten during the the fifties and of course was from Columbus They became friends and Steinbrenner hired cassidy. ACIDY as a speed coach and he worked in the Yankees farm system for years and was known Famously or infamously as one of one of the few guys is not the only guy that steinbrenner never fired but he he wore his. He wore his Heisman celebrity quite. Well he was renowned around Ohio state Howard hop along cassidy? The third heisman winner to die in twenty nineteen justice. This month Pat Sullivan. The Auburn quarterback in nineteen seventy one on us. A one the heisman nineteen seventy-one. He was a three year starter. At quarterback came from Birmingham in was is electrifying presence for Auburn football in his first varsity game the first game of his Sophomore Year nineteen sixty nine Auburn scored scored on six of its first seven possessions and beat wake far fifty seven the nothing and that was the beginning of a an incredible era and Auburn football. I I think the first iron bowl ever went to was in nineteen sixty nine Auburn. Just absolutely spanked spanked Alabama forty nine the twenty six on the strength of PAT solvent throwing to Terry Beasley. who was his favorite favorite target and and they worked together for three years? I will tell you that. When he won Heisman in one thousand nine hundred seventy one it was a very close vote between him? and Ed Mironenko the Rhinebeck at Cornell and the last Real Ivy League candidate for the highest one Marinov finished first in three of the geographic regions in which they tally votes for the Iceland but Sullivan had sixty more first place votes and won a narrow victory. IV The announcement was made Thanksgiving. Thanks giving in. Those days was two days before Auburn Played Alabama and a One of the Great Games Certainly in the history of our involved both teams were undefeated. That was Alabama's first year in the wishbone. Incredible Comeback By Bear Brian Todd. from from a couple of years of mediocrity and they thought that perhaps there was some heisman hangover of two days later later Alabama spanked Auburn thirty one to seven but it did not certainly didn't diminish who Pat Sullivan was when he meant to Auburn University. I got to know him. A little was as head. Coach of the Samford bulldogs took a program. That quite frankly they're in Birmingham hadn't done much of anything over the years and I think his last like he had winning seasons in his last three or four seasons and went to the play offs. The whoa back then. We'll call one AA playoffs. SDS and that's where I got to normal that and it was He's just fine and and I was always struck by the Nice is now also struck. By the fact he came along and and was slinging it. You know with Auburn and should've Jordan when everyone else obviously was just playing between the tackles and always think about the great showdown that Nineteen seventy-one year started with this great showdown with Archie Manning in gator bowl and then ended. You know the following season with the with the heisman trophy. So good man and we're fortunate to get novel. He was one of the nicest people I've met in college football vents duly at Auburn defeated and undefeated Georgia team in Nineteen seventy-one late nineteen seventy-one Sullivan. Senior year and daily called solvent. Solve the best quarterback he had ever seen through for two hundred and forty yards and four touchdowns in Auburn. Beat Georgia thirty five to twenty. In addition to being the head coach at Samford he was also the head coach. TCU and Lsu actually made him an offer to be head coach but TCU wouldn't let him out of the contract and Sullen did not have the money for the buyout clause so he he stayed at Tcu and eventually lost sat job went to Sanford and was always a a presence in a figure of some renown in the state of Alabama. "And Washington Washington leading the way so although distort programs and one of those teams you would think no matter. What can weather the storm? It's very surprising to see. USC really really be struggling to this point and even with the the struggles they had and whether they help with stay or not for them to be at this point. It's it's really kind of going to be an uphill o'clock for a program that at the very least was able to close strong but at this point really struggling in state in the SEC the ACC in particular really really benefiting from that kind of West Coast. And Yeah you have programs like Bama and Clemson and Ohio state that they recruit nationally. They they they don't they don't go state to state. It's it's well. We were a destination for anybody from anywhere Another program that was like that and losing. I touched a a little bit on. This was Florida state. Many years ago they could go anywhere and pluck a kid from California and suddenly. He's in the backfield and now Mike novell has this challenge where he has less than two weeks to assemble a class and now he's trying to figure out the quarterback situation we talked about Jeff Sims de committing from Florida largest. What what's Norville facing here trying to find a quarterback with a program that has recruited a quarterback in a couple of years or at least brought in a quarterback in the last couple of years? Yeah I mean this is talking about USC. The now Florida Kevin. I think what it shows you. Is that the job that somebody like nick. Sabin is doing doing it. Allah Bama with the consistency that he is recruiting at is really unprecedented. Because you think about some of these programs with so much history that have been dominant under recruiting trail that it can happen to anybody that you could fall off and really struggle. There's no more. Give me any more on recruiting trail. USC being one in Florida state being. Ah You're right. The last two cycles. They did not sign a quarterback and then they got Justin you commit now they did go out and just pick one up and take a rod maker out of Georgia one of the winning programs in that they I believe he was a south Florida. Commit crimes that he committed but so they got a quarterback but you could very much argue with what they've been unable to sign that they should probably try to bring in to in this class. If nothing else for bodies because you can and I know there's been some successful college football transfers Justin feels jalen hurts. Put you in my opinion. You cannot live on just bringing in Grad transfers and in other transfer the quarterback position. You've got to bring a young quarterback and gotta develop them within your program and that is where they have really struggled now of all the classes that are being taking over with the exception of Washington where we're just kind of a change of of the guard there but we're talking about where coaches and fired or else probably taking over the best base of a class. They're still in the top twenty five they still have. ESPN three hundred commits. They had a lot of defections. But they're still a solid base there that if he can maintain this group and a few pieces. It won't be too bad especially ACC where it's really Kinda Clemson that everybody else Florida state could still. We'll be towards the top of that conference and not lose a lot of ground. But I think if you're looking at Florida state I do not think that the program with some of the struggles. They've had along the offensive line and in out really at the quarterback he region and Ron maker automakers a talented young man. But I don't necessarily know if he will step in plug and play type guy the quarterback position. So there's still bill a lot of questions and a long way to go but if there's anything working in Florida state's favor is that the ACC in terms of recruiting is not very strong and he is taking over for a solid class. We WanNA preach patients because if you look at novell's a track record. He does a great job bringing in playmakers a quarterback back and then defensive line so just give it time. We'll see how this plays out when he gets his first full year in Tallahassee Craig. We know it's it's a crazy time. We appreciate you joining us here on the PODCASTS. As we get ready for Wednesday anytime enjoy it and have a great week. WanNa thank lubes and Craig for joining us I love Wednesday. "Will erode. Oh and she also hosts the Women's NC Double A. Tournament's he's done a great job of doing that. The last couple of years great to have Maria Taylor with us on the college football podcast. Maria first off. Did I miss anything. I think it'd be leaving three or four the jobs out of here. I feel like when you said that I realized that I have no life than just basically what you're reading back out to me. You covered it. All you got it You're living multiple dreams for a variety of people that aspire to be like you. When are you off by the way as somebody that understands wearing wearing multiple hats here at the network where you do something and then you do something else while everybody else is off winner you so technically July ally in August it'd be my offer down period and so it just depends on when holly and I decided to start that in college football road trip I think last year or this past year we started the the fifteenth of August? We pushed it back a week. Then I really get August as my all time. Of course the Great Holly Rowe Your great ten of wherever you guys go on that on that road trip like even during the week now like hypothetically your worlds are colliding on multiple frontier where you have a little piece of get up but but at the same time you're also doing NBA countdown as as the new host and congratulate you on that on Fridays. It's Great Watch but also then you have to figure out. How do I get to Saturday? And how do I figure out the next hat. That is the primary thing you've done in the fall and that is college football how like when do you take a breath are are we taking time off from your day off Actually yes So I would say that Monday and Tuesdays are my day off but you know I was literally sitting here. Your cat man watching Netflix. You would understand there's this. There's this documentary called bickering right now. So that's what I've been watching but on Mondays and Tuesdays. I travel back doc on Sunday. So technically that's the data like catch your breath or get back on track Monday to. There's almost just like sending out emails to Sid's or sports information directors lining up interviews interviews with players from both teams I've been doing get up on Wednesday Thursdays when I can but some next week. ACTUALLY GO STRAIGHT TO LA FROM MINNESOTA. Because we're working on and Patrick Beverley feature. Because we have the clippers on our air you know Friday night for NBA countdown. So it kind of almost depends on. Are we working on a feature that week week. Do I have time on Monday. and Tuesday to get somewhere and do a an interview and it's not that I'm just Kinda like at home in New Yorker and Atlanta and I'm down and then I leave I I do countdown on Friday and then Saturday morning I would leave for whatever our night game is going to be the last couple of weeks. I've had to Miss College Game Day because we had countdown late at night and I couldn't make it to you know Game Day in South Dakota wasn't a flight to get their bell game. Yeah that's the hardest part because like if you're covering covering an NBA team or if you're covering the league you can go to a big city but if you're covering college football it's finding a big city especially the timing out of New York where or you have to fly in and then driving somewhere right like you're not you're not you're not flying into Tuscaloosa you know there's an old and there's no easy way to get get to certain places on the college football schedule. How are you juggling everything like how? How do you know where you're at what city you're at and what you're doing that day? Okay so my secret weapon and I'm not even kidding about. This is my mom. My mom like she runs my entire schedule schedule. She booked all my flights Kevin. I'm not even kidding. She everyone the programming coordinator email her before they emailed me so she has my life my hotel done. She's telling me when and where I'm leaving. She's like as soon as I land somewhere. She's texting me the hotels and I'm going to or SUV GONNA come and pick me up. And she's the retired Certified Public Accountant so she's super strategic and like good with numbers and organized and I am not. She handled all of that for me. I'm serious keeps my whole head screwed on tight. Br You have the ultimate weapon by the way I. I'm a son of an accountant as well. My Dad was an accountant. And when you can have all of that one you have the weapon with your mom. She's she's she's the real. Mvp Yeah and she tells me. What do you know what I mean like? She's not afraid of me. She'll like she needs to. She doesn't ah you know what I mentioned anything like No. No you messed up that flight. I told you when it was and I'm like you know what you're right. Mom My bad can book another one please. So then how do you decompress. And you're you're very fit. You obviously your background playing volleyball. You're on the go. How do you decompress? How do you find time to Say I need some me time and that is who is getting away from everybody. Yeah I mean I would say probably when I do have a Monday or Tuesday dan if I can be at home I love being around my little niece. She's two years old. She doesn't care about football. She doesn't care about basketball. She's trying to Lego land and being around that or someone her age. That doesn't have the same stressors that I feel like we kinda deal with on a daily basis that constant reminder that you know everything's really fine. She's so happy and being around her makes me happy. And then there's some days to Kevin where I'm just like I'm under the covers and I don't WanNa do anything like I don't. I will stay in in the bed until one or to get up and eat and get back into that cause your body does need to recover. Sometimes like flights and travel. It can wear on you get not hydrated you know if I saw. Maybe there might be a week where I'm still in a little bit under the weather so I'm not working out like I should then. I need to recover for a full day. I'm all all about being lazy. Honestly that's that's your body that's where your body can recharge a little bit right and taking a break from all the madness that surrounds you And you've done a great job in juggling this now. Now you've got the holidays around the corner with Thanksgiving. What are you going to do for Thanksgiving? Is this an opportunity. Where or you can spend some time with your husband and your family and your mom or is this something where I gotta go as getting ready for my next GIG? I actually I took off the entire week. it's funny 'cause get up and act like well you. Can you still do your Wednesday Thursday and because we don't have NBA count on Friday. I was like you know this is the perfect opportunity. Anything get a whole week off. So I'm in Atlanta the entire week my brother actually just had another babies. I've got a baby nephew that was born on Tuesday or on Monday Sunday. And so it's been kind of fun to be around that and I'm going to cook. I don't really know how to cook. But I am in charge. Macaroni and cheese and the sweet potatoes from making yams. So Kevin. I'll keep you posted on that went and Thursday we all go out for Thanksgiving and we'll be watching football hanging out. We play a lot of games like taboo or sure as it gets very competitive like it's a crazy time on Thanksgiving all. That's great though. It's good that you can carve some time in the middle of the madness especially gearing up for you know the college football season where I think it. You know it's great. It's a lot of fun but you really are gearing up for December right in January and end for you you go into of course the Christmas schedule with the NBA Little Tilton and right after that. You've gotTA handle duties of The women's Tournament and the full NBA schedule in the spring. And and I the next big questions. You can't screw up macaroni and cheese. Can you do dude but I think like I have done it before as someone like. Give the whatever. The proportions are from cheese to actual like noodles and macaroni. I've messed that up where it was been super dry. So Oh not the least. You'll the ratio. I killed the ratio. I'm not good at math house. My Mom's EPA. I'm terrible at it like I'm better at English and stuff like that so I'm working on myself. I did much better last year and so every year. It's a little bit better so a bait as has been going on as well. You know what served on on Thanksgiving Day and each houses numerous Ingrid I. I want to know what the go-to dessert is for you. We're not going to get that answer from pollock. Because he doesn't he doesn't have their so. We always have potato pies is in budge. Pies all fudge good okay. Okay that I'm pretty by sugar with a little bit of chocolate in it. But it's great and advantage of everyone else like pecan Pie. But I don't so you're not a peak. Yeah now. Where do we fall in Pumpkin Pie? No we don't eat Pumpkin Pie. I don't even even know that I've ever really had pumpkin pie to be on well. I don't think Pumpkin is like you saw sweeping so I don't know how turn into a pie or why we're using it now. You're you're sitting on the Scott van pelt side of pies percent. He's not a fan and let's go back to you your career here all. Sec Volleyball player Georgia. A what was the dream for you in college. Because when you're wearing all these hats now I'm sure one of them was what you aspire to be like and now you have the chance to have all of these things on your plate. What what was the dream back in college for you when you got into broadcasting? Yeah it's so funny because I look back at it and people will bring up actually have like A. There's a questionnaire are we had to sell out when I was maybe a junior senior on the volleyball team. And you had to write down exactly what you want to be and so my dream answer was an ESPN sideline reporter. But what I remember from all I ever wanted to do was to work. Women's basketball tournament like I wanted to be one of the reporters that works in the sweet sixteen or the final four and and I wanted to be at the national championship for volleyball and be a sideline reporter there too and then also you know like on the way up being an analyst or volleyball analyst or basketball. Well I assume you'll never get to the point where you can be an analyst sitting in the chair for any of those championships but you could probably report on them and you can do the regular season and that was it like you. Could've if that's all I was doing right now and twenty nineteen. I would have been fine with that. Because that was my only dream. We used to have people come and cover our games and I thought that's an awesome job. You get to be around the game you interview coaches and players and you talk about him like we're putting women's games on TV. And when I was coming up. That's not as easy to come by as it is right now. It's everything's on TV because the SEC an ACC network but that one game that was on TV when you were in college. I was in school. It was like Oh TV Games. And I wanted. It can be that person. I came in broadcasting. And then like that. So you realize a dream. You're living the dream on a daily basis.

"It's still an important part of the process so I think Utah still in really good shape but we cannot close the door on Oklahoma because with Baylor moving up into the top ten a a huge leap a significant leap after a win against a pedestrian Texas team now now gives Oklahoma a top ten win and possibly another one in that big twelve championship game. But you WANNA talk about upsets. Oh you better be on alert going into ranked Oklahoma mistake game. Yeah bedrooms going to be obviously crazy. You mentioned Baylor making that Five spot jumped now inside the top ten at number nine The message was definitely different this week. On on how much they've you Baylor and It felt like they're giving Baylor some of the respect that we felt many any of US felt. They deserve a couple of weeks ago. If if we play and we played the scenario out with pollock and I want to play it out with you if we play this scenario outwear Oregon and Beats Utah and the PAC twelve is out in the championship. Game and Georgia Loses Bama. Doesn't look that great against Auburn or hypothetically the Auburn Beats Alabama. Could you see Baylor making the jump if into the top four if they beat Oklahoma that's Ta. Ah I mean under that scenario. You can because you're talking about a two loss. PAC twelve champ right if Oregon wins and if Alabama doesn't look good or they lose to auburn that throws into question whether or not they should be in their over a conference champ You know it. Wouldn't I forget where Ohio State was in twenty fourteen before they made the jump into the top four for the first time on the championship weekend. It's certainly possible. It's a much more plausible scenario than thinking that they would jump from fifteen or fourteen wherever they were last week cash. It's hard because you you look at their schedule. And we're talking about Stephen F. Austin. UTSA rice non conference schedule which literally just a week ago. Ramelan's pointed out as a criticism. This isn't against Baylor saying they've combined for seven wins and all of a sudden they beat Texas twenty four ten and it's a good win against four last Iowa Iowa state this now ranked you know it's very interesting how how quickly the value of these wins and losses changes. So you know. That's as long as I say. Yes because in a week. The picture changes in those debates in that room change. Where do you put the group of five especially with the MEMPHIS MEMPHIS? CINCINNATI SCENARIO IN THE NEXT couple of weeks. And then you have Boise state just sitting there waiting. I love this group of five race this year. It's so fun and the Memphis. Cincinnati game on Friday night is going to be huge and by the way navy's SL was tweeting being when rankings came out. Hey what about US APP. State sitting there number twenty five with a loss of Georgia southern and navy has to better wins than APP. APPs states best wins against North Carolina and South Carolina so if navy could be in the mix if they went to memphis loses you. You know it's it's interesting to see what the committee would do with a two loss American Athletic Conference Champ and Boise State. Because I was on the phone with Mike ESCO go last week. The A. C. Commissioner. and He's already prepping for it because he knows it's going to happen because of CINCY MEMPHIS game followed by the title game and his point is we've been a strongest conference all season. A two loss conference champ has been considered for us. But that's going to be a good debate between whatever whoever emerges emerges from that league and Boise. I love it though. We're two weeks left of the season we've got so many other scenarios play out heather. Thank you for joining us before we let you go thanksgiving. What's the scenario in the ditch household? Are you guys hosting. Are you guys going somewhere. You know what I'm not GonNa and tell you how old I am but I still. I love my mom cooks. I'm so leggy. There's no cooking in my kitchen kraft Mac and cheese for Thanksgiving that. I'm in good shape but we're going to everybody that we're going to go to my mom's. Hey listen no one's gonNA fault that Mama's home cooking that wins out each and every time I.

"Even though -Sconsin is another team like Penn state to me. It's been just leaking oil. I mean you talk about defensively. The last five games for won Miss Tackles Palooza. Compared to I mean they wanNA worst first tackling teams in the country. The last five games the first six member we talked about. They never missed tackles and they've really really struggled defensively compared to the beginning of season. I and I love Tanner. Santer Morgan by the way that new two baller man I mean he is like we talk about Johnson and Bateman. But that dude. He knows how to he doesn't he doesn't manage a game. That dude makes tough throws consistently. He's he's a stud man by the way you know how I view close games. Have you closed games up to half time. So it was twenty one to seven at the half in order to twenty one fourteen twenty one fourteen at that point game at halftime as a guy that hosts halftime time shows. I look at things and I say close games. That's all I care about getting the two two and a half quarters of close games. 'cause get us to the halftime words close so we have the audience since and then we give the audience a good game in the third quarter and it wasn't a good game the third quarter about to say it was. I think it was like eighteen and nothing in the third quarter. Yes it was. It wasn't thanks a lot but but a A Close Kevin. Yeah you're great prognosticator twenty one fourteen job. You're despicable hey. Listen I want. I want to wish the family family. A Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy the scene in Minnesota. I'm sure you're going to have three jackets on considering your softy in the cold weather and logs toboggan bogging. You better believe it. Maybe we won't even we'll just see. Your eyes blinked twice. I'd have a great thanksgiving brother. I talk to you soon. And we'll be back back in a minute with heather ditch and her take on the College Football playoff rankings as we head into the last week of the regular season but first a word from. At and T.. Yeah College. Football is great unless of course it's just okay. Like when students decided to paint their chests with different letters to spell some word and then they stand together to get on. TV Okay but their spelling the word wrong or they lined up in the wrong order. Sure not everybody's an English major and I get it. We can't all win the National Spelling Bee. But come on people you should know how to spell wildcats bulldogs. The purpose is to have a word jumble in the student section to keep your mind sharp or something thing just okay is not okay..

"That's the only reason why I think you can go wait a minute. First of all we're not going to question Alabama's playmakers offers. That is not going to happen. We know they have the best playmakers best running back receiver combinations offense of line in the country period. No doubt I think it's not debatable. Me In my eyes and now you put a quarterback in there that lights up a great defense and you could tell. He's accurate like he has been the last two starts starts. He's had he's accurate and east dissecting people and looks great. You'RE GONNA make a case for that like I think you're gonNA point to that and go that way. That's not that's not too bad. I can make a case. I'm not saying it's GONNA win overall and I don't think it I don't think it will because here's the thing here's another thing to the PAC twelve has been left out year after year after year. That's going to be in the back of everybody's mind right right. The committee members are GONNA be like we're had we been disrespecting the PAC twelve. This is a great year to give more expect it will it will happen. It's human nature that's why we have humans on the committee. I will also say this that I know that people will play scenarios. Well if you put Utah Versus Alabama and a neutral field you're gonNA favor Alabama and I think everybody nine out of ten people will say okay. Yeah you will favor Alabama on a neutral field. I don't think the committee will play into that and take that into account I. I think what they're GONNA DO IS THEY'RE GONNA say Utah's defense is very good daddy and have their bathing have their running back in that loss against USC. They think that plays a role in the playoffs. And I think Moss's the best player on that offense and I don't think it's debatable like that you didn't just lose like a little tiny piece and you had opportunities inside the five yard line. A couple of times was a fumble with your backup running back another time. He had to kick a field. Well that I think might have been. It's been a little bit different. Of course Oh said to. He said you know. Utah's still undefeated on the on the Saturdays. They just lost his accurate. Fridays accurate. I can I can make a case for bolt. But if you're asking ME TO PICK ALABAMA'S OFFENSE UTAH's offense I'll take Alabama's offense defense one one thousand percent. We'll take. Utah's defense to me I. I know this isn't. This is something that I've always thought about over the years and I've always brought up and it's just something that you have have to look at. I think you have to look at. Who can you trust the most to show up because you don't need Ohio State's getting beat thirty one and nothing by Clemson like like that? Fourteen needs to be a team that comes in and compete. And here's here's what else we know by the way has the one seed one playoff yet. I don't think a one C he just won the College Football playoff one time in the history of it so keep that in mind too. It's pretty interesting that it happens year after year after year after year. The one onc- always seems to be the team that falls and doesn't win so really doesn't matter. Just get in the foresee can tell. Just get in right now past experience van basis the Buckeyes as well as the crimson tide. They can tell you that it just get in and we'll figure it out from here on out. We would like to thank the committee for giving us something to talk about this week. 'cause is is plenty of scenarios that we could play out here but before we get to our picks. I WanNa talk about your due to the week. Who who's the guy that's standing out for view that we should keep an eye on heading into the weekend Antoine Whitfield Junior? And you know the name Antoine Whitfield obviously senior played in the NFL. For longtime longtime plate for the Buckeyes and he plays for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. She's got seven picks on the season yet to versus Penn State. You Watch a man. He's just so fun to watch it if balls a fifty fifty ball. Most of the time you don't see safeties break on a ball and go. That's Mine Antoine. Winfield does he really owned center field and that Minnesota Defense defense can make so many big time plays. They're going to need them against Wisconsin. They'll lead them to tackle Jonathan Taylor but there are also need him on the outside when the ball goes up in the air He's is actually a soft he's a he's a Richard Sophomore. He's a fourth year sophomore. He's had injuries to deal with that too medical or as a medical redshirt and redshirt so he has been banged up throughout his career. But he's a guy that will probably leave for the NFL probably atop the second or third round pick somewhere in that area but you see him in big games. Was this year from Minnesota. Just making big plays off the field. He'll need to do it again this weekend. Yeah last week he was recognized as a finalist. For the Bronco Nagorski trophy should vets sped some high praise here. If you look at WHO's up against the Derrick Brown from Auburn Safety from Georgia Jr read is as Simmons from Clemson and chase young a young from Ohio state. Now I think Jason is going to get his own wing when it comes of award shows on December ninth. But he's been fantastic elise. The team in tackles and those seven picks. He's just always around the football. We'll see what his instincts. It's not something you can teach like certain people feel where the ball's going in and you know that he had an interception a couple years ago in the end zone Fresno state that was beautiful he had an interception and where he got beat earlier in the season? And I'll just recovers and doesn't know one thing when you get beat a lot of times people turn like Oh crap I'm beat and then there's some people that turn and sprint aren't as hard as they can and find a way to get there and lay out and that's the kind of kid he is our. We're GONNA keep an eye on him. While I'm kind of curious to see how Wisconsin tries the handle their offense would with that kid roaming around on the other side of this coming weekend which unit is turning heads when you look at the tape right now. How `Bout Memphis? How about Memphis is all moments? I mean there are by the way they play Cincinnati this week which is a huge game. Obviously huge implications for the and. Who's going to win it? But I just. I think that is crazy to watch memphis and brady whites quarterback and he's making big plays all over the field. He pushes the ball down. The field. And Kenneth Gain well has been a guy he's got over thirteen on yards rushing was came and came out of nowhere but the lowest. They've scored as twenty-eight since October and that was against your owls when they lost and got cheated so they've they've been a great team great offense and by the way it's might novell like it's consistent with him at Memphis he you know. Kenny dilling Ham was there. Oh See last year I think thank you went to Auburn this year. And they replace him but I think it's just the constant of Mike norval wherever he's been he's always coached great offense and found a way to create explosive plays. They'RE GONNA score thirty against Cincinnati which this week or twenty they'll score over thirty s a great Cincinnati defense and that's how crazy good memphis offenses. Let's is yeah. They're they're eleven point favorites heading into seventh game on Friday on ABC. Because you want to know the difference you know Cincinnati Saudi can't score. They are struggling scoring points. MEMPHIS can put it up against any body score against temple last week. Yeah you know how. They scored Lord all man. That was a killer game. I mean how did that go for your picks and you know and you know the difference in that game right because I know you watched was to blocked extra reporter to return Yeah and then. It was returned for touchdown and tablets so many opportunities against that temple. So you it's just me and my my lying. I mean you're typically you mean what are you. What what we've we've got ten wins on the season and we'll be this great job bud? Great Awesome Awesome easy. Found a way to give it up. That's that's kind of been tipples. That was a heartbreaking taking game man. It was a heartbreaking game since that. I'm just going to ignore you the rest of the way Let's get to our listener questions here before we get to our picks question from a loyal listener as names Austin by the way we appreciate him listening each and every week he wants to know your thoughts on Florida state under Odell. haggen junior heading into this weekend's game against Florida which she's a rivalry game and let's not forget Odell has done a pretty good job when he's been the in terms of a couple of years ago and they picked up a win. How do you view Odell Hagan's is junior and and the prospects of Florida state keeping him as the head coach and and while while some people really like shaking their head? Don't forget Clemson. Did this a few two years ago with a guy named Dabo swinney. Yeah all right away to motivate. You found a way to to. The team fell in love with them. And look where we're at right now. So what do you think. Listen I don't think that's going to happen again. I think at a spot where they they really need to make a hire a good hire a big name higher. I think to kind of turn it around. I think he's done a good job knocking the job he's done but Florida state's just been a mixed bag all year and and and a mixed bag. The last couple of seasons especially for the talent to that place has that place has elite talent. It is top fifteen job in the country. And you're right though. You also say that about Dabo Sweeney and the job. He did it Clemson and what he's been able to turn around and it's been amazing and those stories are hard to find so I don't I here I think they'll go a different direction but I would love to see Florida state compete in this game. I mean I would love to see them. Find a way to muck it up and make the rivalry great and make toughen often make it physical and it would be. It would be really fun to watch 'cause all I thought you know. I'm doing a slight tape on Florida. Florida state this week and on game day we try gotTa show highlights of what to look for and who to look for and you know I was my first thought was oh. Hey what about prime-time Jameis Winston and going back to win Florida. Florida state was was really good years ago. Because it's been hard the last two years to find a lot of positives and if you're Florida State Fan and you're listening. I think you can agree. Three to whoever they bring in..

Now here's your host Kevin Godley a stunner for last night's playoff committee not so much the decision of switching one and two and having Ohio state eight over Lsu. It's the timing of it. Thought they would have done it last week or at least they could have heather join us later to break down the rankings as well as Maria Taylor Taylor sharing her thoughts about game day or best stories and her relationship with Nick Sabin after that little brief Confrontation from coach Saban last year on the field. Good to have David pollock back with us here on the college football podcast with her being pollock David under the weather this week. How you doing right now? I'm good home. Gee I am good. chill chill of the house a lot of relaxing lately. But Good I. I'm not surprised is by the committee with With Penn State being the you know that's a big win. The committee showed you how much they valued Penn state but I thought they played probably its worst game. It's sloppiest game game. You know like he wasn't it wasn't by any stretch vintage Ohio state or total domination. Like we've seen from them so interesting but you know you could see the first first ranking when they released least it when they had changed Ohio state over Lsu that they loved Ohio state and they love their domination on both sides of the football in the year. And you can tell they continue to to like Ohio a state and they also like Penn state have begun that seemed like to be the deciding factor as you mentioned and and I'm with you They weren't incomplete control of that game. Like we've seen seen from the Buckeyes all season. Long my argument here on the other side playing devil's advocate is if you look at the resume and you see. LSU has you know three three top fifteen wins and you see that allows say has three top nineteen wins and the differences that Lsu has a win against the fifth team on their home. Turf That to me is is the deciding factor. Meanwhile you know when you when you heard restock to the Committee Committee Chair Rob Mullins he. He talked a little bit about They see some some some issues here with Lsu's defense but we saw some issues from Lsu's defense last this week. So why is it this week that that's my biggest question. What is the difference? And if Penn state game or is this something a little bit deeper where you know conspiracy theorists are looking at the idea of okay. This sets up the possibility of Alabama jumping four. So you do not have a one vs for LSU Alabama rematch. Instead you. Avoid that in Ohio state would play Alabama if these teams went out. What are your thoughts on that? Hold on okay. L. Mr for another first down. You know what I think Lsu Defense it's proven itself over and over again. They're out the season like we. We should should have doubts about them. You know and listen. They're banged up just like a lot of teams in college football and they'll probably get healthy soon but their defense has been leaky and giving up a lot. aww points throughout this season where Ohio state I think you feel a little bit more competent. And so I'm not with the Alabama conspiracy theory at all. I don't I don't care about that. I think it's stupid. I think Utah how we'll have a say in that by the way they've definitely been taking care of business and doing their thing and it hasn't even remotely looked at even close host the last several weeks and they've been doing exactly what they should do. They're not as flashy as a lot of teams. But man you better. You better bring a lunchbox when you play against him. So I'm not worried about the Bama Obama can pistons conspiracy theories I think this week's rankings gave a little bit more hope to the big twelve with with organ losing to Arizona. State the big twelve now in in the mix. How does Matt Jones in Alabama even look against Auburn? This week there are. There are small favorite Kevin. What field goal or something you you know favorite so it'll be interesting to watch them in that game too but I think we still got a lot in front of us that are that are interesting but the key thing for me is can Lsu in in Ohio state where they're at right now? They almost could afford a loss before the championship game. No doubt about it like they could both lose this week and be perfectly fine and the go onto their championship. Game Win Their Championship game. They're still in. It doesn't even matter so it'll be interesting. Even matters down the stretch does it. It doesn't matter the big ten championship game. Even matter you in a couple of weeks one of those could be no and not even not even matter and we talk about about every game mattering know. The Championship. Game doesn't even matter you know. That's that's kind of crazy to think about but I disagree two to one extent where I do think the SEC sec championship matters. Just because if I was does lose it doesn't matter because they drop them potentially two to four but for George if they lose it or done I mean it matters to the Georgia bulldogs. They Ha- they have to win that they have to win at Atlanta if they want to continue to play and that would be whether it's in Glendale or Atlanta again in the semi's semi's By the way the biggest thing for me Kevin is seeding purposes seatings. That'll be everything like that's what who plays whom. WHO IS GONNA be? Who D- Who Dodges Ohio state is a good thing? I don't WanNa play Ohio state but are you going to have to fight Clemson. You know like that that it to me is where these two teams. They all stay undefeated. Guess what they have the ability to dodge each other but you gotta play Clinton one of them going into play Clemson but seeding purposes. Whoever's in the one hole isn't a good spot they would much rather be there in playing whoever number four is then then being in a situation where obviously the rankings would be different one in spot has the best seed by far always does but this year I think you can tell even more? That's why it's the biggest talking point this week. You know that that fourth seed will will sort itself without. I think in the next couple of weeks but the big talking point is that that battle between Lsu Ohio state for that one seed because no one wants to play Clemson in that two-three matchup so that that brings me to the next question if they went out. Ohio state wins out. They beat Michigan and they beat the winner of the. You know the the Minnesota Wisconsin game. And and they do it. Where they beat Minnesota Wisconsin by a touchdown and then you see Lsu roll this weekend and and then dominate Georgia deed Lsu in your mind do enough then to move up and bump Ohio saying get the number one? Yeah I would be okay with that if LSU's defense looks more solid now they're getting healthier the next couple weeks and then plays really really well an got a pretty good offense oftentimes saying it's world leaders but you know Lsu defense can't give thirty again you don't say they've done that on the regular if they can look more solid with coming back and then more solid in the SEC championship game and you start to believe more in it. Sure and Info State looks a little bit leaky but it may is there. Is there a debate. Really Kevin when we watch. LSU's defense versus Ohio states. No I mean it's not debatable. For me now listen. Let's also be fair and say this Ohio states just getting to their schedule now like they they have it played. Elite offense is the best teams. Think about the best teams Ohio states have Ohio state has played offensively. The best teams period that they've played plate. Cincinnati Cincinnati is one of their best teams. The one of their best wins Wisconsin Penn state all three of those offenses are severely flawed. They're not great great dominant. Offense is by any stretch. They're not Alabama offenses with two. They're not okay. I mean it's just it's not the same thing and so I think it'll be interesting to watch. Watch them this week. Ohio State Michigan offense. That's playing a lot better in Canada. Got The ball rolling with some weapons on the outside and run the football and then if they play Minnesota Minnesota's offense I think as legit playmakers and receivers in a really good quarterback that's playing really good at this time so states defense looks a lot better and they have chased young in the in which is different than everybody else but Ohio state has not played a lot of great offenses ether. Not Kid ourselves. We'll we'll break down the games later on here as we go head to head with our picks and we get his. That's not working out well for those picks hasn't been a good run. I mean you talk about leaking oil. Good Lower Bro. You got hold the engine and I know anything about now. Let's move on now. We'll talk about our picks later on as we continue on the PODCASTS. Also want to remind you that if you have a question one here on the podcast for her beer politics tweet using the Hashtag Ashtec. CFP POD we've got a handful of questions for you. That Taylor sorting out briefly. Here you touched on it on that fourth spot and it in my mind. It sounds like regardless of what we saw on Saturday night and the fighting Herm Edwards beating Oregon in a great game gene daniels regardless of vowed outcome. It's not GONNA hurt Utah if Utah Beats Oregon in the PAC twelve championship game when they had that that huge debate up against Alabama and end potentially Oklahoma now now we will say that the committee is has done a complete turnaround on how they view bail moving them five spots. It's a big week for for the big twelve at least in the rankings. Wise but you think Utah has the edge here for that fourth spot. Jorge Luis Lsu. I do I think Utah metrics that. They've that they've listen. I can't say because of resume. Let me be clear like Utah lost to UC. Who's WHO's probably the most explosive team that they've played this year with a third string quarterback? I mean I can't defend that Kevin like I can't moss was out yes but I can't. I can't defend the fact that you they got bombed on. And so and then I can't defend the fact that they don't have impressive wins but when you look at domination on both sides of the football you look at Zach Mawson Austin Huntley and their ability to to keep defenses off-balance move the sticks Be Consistent be physical. You look at the defense. There's at least six guys on the Defense Kevin. It's GonNa get drafted at least six. I mean there might be more than that like. It's a legit lots of NFL guys on that defense. So I think that there are consistent team team I believe Utah will show up weekend and week out I I mean I know. They're really really good. I'd like to see him against organ with more speed on the field and explosive supplied makers on the outside the see if they can they can hang in. Hold up a yeah. I mean I think without that it changes the game now. How does Jones Look Against Auburn? I I think that'll committee by the way in the past and it's different guys but they showed with Cartel Jones that backup quarterback or not. They'll move you up if you look good. And let me ask you Kevin. Kevin what if what if Alabama just hits hits Auburn in the face and boat racism and destroys them and scores the most points of the season that they've given up because the mostly given up Dallas. She was twenty four they score thirty one. It's thirty one thirteen. I will say this I will say this. With the Alabama storyline in two thousand seventeen. We knew that defense was much much better than the one this year. Right and the Cordell Jones thing is Ohio state. Just I mean they fifty nine days they they portrayed is nonsense. And that was the difference right so to me. If you compare Utah Versus Alabama and you look at every type hypoc metric or whatever and if it's close the difference will be one team won the conference championship right me. That's the difference. I said you. Yes validated okay. That's one of the criteria. That's not the only criteria though. That's that's if there I get that but if you're looking looking at the metrics and they are very close if you look at all the criteria and they match up you see both sides and and you're like okay this is GonNa be a little what's going to be the difference. It's a PAC twelve championship. I disagree with you but you also point two losses. First of all neither have neither have quality wins. It's Alabama has probably been way more dominant way more passing the eye test but it was also with a different quarterback throughout the season quality. Quality wins are lacking what about quality loss. You forty six forty one to the to the number two team in the country. That's the difference with your best player playing playing and they'll loss team dominated you and now you have that best player with you on this team. But what if I prove what if I now how in turn proved that Mak Jones is really really good you know and really and here's the thing here's what we know Kevin. We know he's going to have to do it against an elite defense. That's is what's kind of cool. That's the only reason I there's teeth in this that literally..
