I am thinking of white people are cool in Canada get this fight and some guys came to my defense and beat these guys up because I was a little guy, little scared, kid, but the guys who beat these guys up We're in a band called the Hawks. Later, it turned out. They call themselves the band's Robby Robinson leave on helm, and they played behind Bob Dylan and they kind of rescued me. Well said this bar fight starts a friendship with the band, which takes, um takes him into this world of Canada's folk rock musicians. Uh, Johnny Mitchell. Neil Young, huge names. What did they make of Rick James? At that time? Who? By the way, that wasn't his real name, right? No, but he had to have an alias because he was AWOL from the U. S military, But I think that they found him to be an authentic African American with talent and all of them as musicians were fans of African American music and so to be in Canada have access to an actual African American. Who was equally as interested in them as they were him. It must have been a really interesting synergy between you know those folks, so he's playing this kind of folk rock music at the time. How did he then? Transform into the Rick James that we all know who has this kind of funky rock style. Well, he was in multiple bands over the years. And the interesting thing about the film is you see his musical progression in his previous bands, Everything that led up to the song you and I Which was Rick James, first Real hit. If you get familiar with the music that no one really knows, But we expose in the film. You can kind of see his evolution. You know, he she was interested in rock music, so he made rock music who's interested in jazz? He was in a band called White Cane That could have easily been Chicago or something you know, had big horns and orchestration. And, you know, it sounds really advanced. And I was like, Wow, when I first heard it, I said, Wow, This music is really good, but no one knew it. There's so many artists who wind up in bargained ins all over the world. And if Rick James refused to be left in the bargain bin, But when you hear the music that would wind up becoming the Rick James that we know When you get familiar with the music that came before you can kind of see how he eventually landed on an amalgamation of all these styles. Yeah. So, as you said his breakthrough hit was you and I After that, Of course, there was super freak which, um, was a smash hit and really crossed over. But some people really hated this song. Why Rick James wasn't a huge fan. He was a fan in that. He was blown away by the success of it, because, ultimately to him. It was a joke, and it was the last song on an album where he felt like he needed a pop song. And so you know, he didn't fancy himself a pop musician. He fancied himself an artist. So When this song cross that was a joke in an afterthought, blows up with lyrics that to him or a complete joke, which she describes in the film. Other people felt the same way about the song and other people felt like Wow, This is the one song That you know, white folks are going to get into And sort of get down and boogie, too. But they're not really digging Who? The real and the complete who? The complete Rick James was. So it's almost like Cliff notes to the artist. Some people felt and felt like You know, this isn't a serious representation of the artist. You know, Rick didn't really love it either. But it wound up making him rich because M C hammer sample that did he make more money off that than his original version. The word is, he allegedly made much more money on the M C hammer version that he did on the original, which was a smash in and of itself. How does that change his life? Well, when you have access to Unlimited cash. It gives you access to a limited cocaine, so It changed his life. In a way, where it was hard for anyone to say no to him, including his hard for him to say no to himself. So obviously he was able to have lots of cars and a beautiful homes and travel the world. She That was the first time she met her dad. Yeah, you know, uh, Rick's son was going to school and California. The family Ricks Children were living in California with their mom. Rick's son goes to school and tell some kid that changes his father Turns out. The kid's father was one of the changes bodyguards kid tells his dad, the dad tells with James Rick James Gets a private investigator, and that's how he reconnects with his two kids. So how does she feel now about him like looking back on her childhood and What she saw is she witnessed a lot of this, Um Lavish lifestyle, but she's very she seems very forgiving in the movie. Yeah, because I think she just writes it off. As you know her father. When he was on drugs. He was a different person. That's not who he really was deep down, and I believe that's how she reconciles her feelings. I mean, she was very honest and forthright. And I can't imagine what that must be to sort of. Have to process all that. You know so much scrutiny from the outside world, but I believe she just She knows that Rick James wasn't her father. Another man was her father, Rick James is a character Rick James is sometimes a demon, sometimes a genius. So she holds onto who her father was not necessarily who Rick James was. Right. So at the very depths of the character, he is convicted of assault. Um Assaulting two women, and he And his Wife or girlfriend. Was she wife at the time? I'm not sure you might have been a girlfriend at the time. Yeah, Yeah. Um they both go to prison and He spends a couple of years in prison. And so That part of his life. So if you're a if a yoga community on instagram you create you. Create your event on teleport and you host it four specifically for your community and you could decide to opt into using you know allowing this event to exist for all of the user base and leveraging our growth as well But we're seeing a ton of these hosts wanting to also just keep things specific to their niche. We had everything from celebrity matchmaker events all the way over to you know more traditional events on based off religion an interest that are a little bit more broad but we we see a world where they both live in harmony of public event that lives on the telephone marketplace as well as an event that is solely distributed by a influence her so we could have an entrepreneur community doing a dating events where entrepreneurs get together hundred hundred percent. Some of them free but the quality of the conversation completely changes when. It's just a little bit of money so like even started brings event. It was thirty bucks. I'm a lot considering it's all you can drink in free pizza so you know thirty bucks but the it changes the conversation used to have people would come and you know. They're wannabes their thinkers. But if you're putting a little bit of money in that means you're you're committed to getting something out of it. You're committed to the conversation you're committed to giving it a try so that is very interesting. I i'm question a little bit about twenty dollars For five dates price pot Tell me how that works for. A host sir. Yeah i mean we just a back up. Real quick it perfectly lines incentives. I'm in my own room And you learned something and you realize so quickly how different everybody is and we all grow up in somewhat of a sheltered environment where it's kinda hard to break out and have already had so many conversations with people and continue to chat with them on teleport just about different things that we've connected on and it really has expanded myself personally so it's really cool. You mentioned you'll want to change. Behavior changing behaviors hard This seems like a very crowded market both like in the app store and real life and for mind share you know i can name a bunch of competitors that are top of mind If i was thinking okay. I i i want to find somebody to date a. How are you setting yourself apart to get people to find download us. Tell other people about teleport What are you doing to get that mind space. Yeah it's a great question. I think there's a few things that that come to mind in terms of what we're specifically doing. And i think at the early days of talpur we've always been thinking about. How do we build a competitive moat. Had we build a a company not just a product that as we evolve. We'd come harder and harder to touch from our competitors. The last thing you want to do is build any sort of system that's dependent on somebody else like the app store for example or facebook if you're using any of their api Long stories of of why not for a in that department but for us specifically it clicked to us. That are advantage are big competitive. Advantage will be if we can unlock a tool for the for the craters the world if we can build an environment for the best social experiences in the real world are hosted by people that you trust people social influence in the same for this next evolution of of meeting people online the best events will be hosted by those people and if we can create a tool that gives them everything they need properly engage. They're following grow their following and monetize that will be our competitive advantage. It would be disruptive to the tender model or the facebook model in on and on and on to give a massive cut of their their revenue to somebody else specifically in distribution. Where you're already paying your cost per download his already significantly high if you're doing ads and marketing and so on and so forth so we've baked it right into our our business model where we're fuelling. They are that is our cost of acquisition. Let's talk about the business model. A bit for the end user. Is it a monthly subscription. Is it a pay per use paper date. And then i'm going to ask how does hosting work but we'll talk with that after yes right now. Our business model is a pay per event. So it's very much like a ticket model not too much commitment off the start because we really know that. get you through one experience and you just. It really does shift the way you think. 'cause you're like wow so really getting that first drive. Trial is so important for us and that that ticket model really works with what we're we're doing so we're going with a twenty dollar ticket price kind of standardized across the site but a lot of coupon codes and discounts. We can use to try to get people to to give it that first shot to really see the value in it with a ticket like i said low low barrier to entry. Try it out. Built some mvp in got some feedback now with cova did you did your main value prop pivot at all what you were doing. Vivid or did just accelerate the process. Oh totally accelerated athle- acceler really really quickly that's interesting startup Talking at a startup podcast is. How fast did that hit us. Chat like it came out of so quickly in the growth that we've had in a year i honestly think it's it's ten years packed into one in this past year that it just came so fast. I don't know when would virtual events of been as mainstream. How long would it have taken without kovin starting to me. I run live events for a living or this. You know. I had bought a camera and some stuff so we could broadcast somewhere. Stuff live but we did all live workshops and events and stuff so yeah now we're all online so yeah who would have thought tad were saying i mean we. We've been working on this for two years. And i'm sure as you can imagine if you're in the the the online event space before covid hit convincing someone that it was an obvious future Toss who's always obvious convincing somebody else that the first way you're gonna meet someone will the defacto away. We'll be on video in an online experience. That selling that's in convincing. Someone of that future was nearly impossible and the second that we continue building towards that future As i said earlier on this talk lucky to find someone that's as as maniacal as myself to to build a future that doesn't exist right and with kovin hitting its became insanely obvious are pitch to customers investors employees and on and on completely changed. We didn't have to sell video anymore. We have to sell in the moment experiences anymore we excel white teleport white us Which is a very unique shift for a company. And i i definitely recommend when you're building a star avoid trends at all costs and you'll see now that there's a million one clubhouse competitors that exist i if you go back three years ago there were millions and one anonymous social apps that existed and so on and so forth but using your chasing a trend.
