Sam Darnold's Time Is Coming

"I'm gonna start with arguably my most controversial take of the day sam darnold. What's the heartache. And if he is he gonna go sir. Not darnold in slinging. Sam darnold three year career. He's never finished inside of the top. Twenty five at the quarterback position. He's also never thrown for over thirty one hundred yards or twenty touchdowns in a year his career completion percentage sits at fifty nine percent in addition if we look at last year specifically. It's his worst year of his career. Twenty two hundred yards through the air nine touchdowns and eleven interceptions in twelve games. If your take is that sam darnold is bad like you. Just prove that. He's bad like. I don't know where you're going with this but darnold is bad. You're trying to say is gonna finish outside of qb. Thirty two sam darnold careers. Been absolutely terrible. Nobody is going to argue that including myself. It would be pretty easy for somebody to up his career as of bust in move on and in fact. Almost everybody is already done that rightfully so sam. I am one of the few people that still truly believes in you. I'm here to tell you why showtime darnold is going to finish the season as a top twelve quarterback showtime where nicknames coming from you top twelve top twelve quarterback darnold the prospect in darnold product have been polar opposite so far. But let's remember that he was a number three overall pick in the two thousand eighteen draft. He went ahead of josh allen and lamar jackson. The reason he was drafted ahead of them is because scouts were drooling over his size his arm strength and his playmaking ability on the day of the two thousand eighteen draft dane brugge a well-known senior analyst for nfl draft scout listed darnold as the clear number one quarterback in the draft. Obviously that hasn't been the case but the point that i'm trying to make is a talent was there and i know space jam to just came out and unless the monster stolas talents. I'm confident in saying that. Those talents are still in that

Is Tutu Atwell Too Small to Succeed in the NFL? - burst 02

"We're going to hop right back into it and we're going to start with rishaad bateman from the baltimore ravens. He was picked with the twenty seventh overall. Pick in nfl draft. And there's been a lot of conversations about rashaad bateman as to where he compares to some of the other receivers in this class. I know in particular out of people have been comparing him to rondo more but is there a conversation to be made that he's better than other receivers qadir's tony that went before him. I'm interested to hear your thoughts on this call. Would you have to say about rashaad bateman. Yeah as far as a baby. And he's a guy that i think. A lot of other people in the industry were were higher on that. I was going into the draft. One thing i do think kind of happen with his leaning spot is these kind of seemed to fall down in some bricky drafts that i've seen and he's kinda back to where the place that i kinda thought he should be all long You know if he falls any further than where he he's kind of going like i've seen him fall as far as like Seventeenth overall in in some superplex ethic. That's just a little bit of over reaction from the from the market you know It probably settle down. He'll probably move up a little bit more as addressees goes along closer to the season. But i think there's people need to be really careful because we saw with. Aj brown where he went to a a a lesson desirable situation a few years ago and people You know pushed him down too late. I you know second second round rookie drafts and turned out to be a pretty big mistake you know. You can't overreact. To situations. Lamar jackson still developing as a passer. And we really don't know whether the baltimore offense may open up or not you know the part of the reason why they might be writing so much inhabit says low volume and passing is because they really dependent on their own their defense and the running game but it also might be an issue because they didn't have the water receivers with the skill sets the to produce so bateman adds a very vital piece in my opinion that they did not have or last couple seasons in in a possession. Receiver know that moves change as well as a another red zone threat to help out with mark andrews because really their receivers have not been responsible for touchdowns last and Marquees brown where i think. He's a good. football player. Is for a stretching the field when he's healthy i. I'm not sure that he's the type of guy that you really want to depend on in dynasty especially in ppo release because he's not going to have a high volume with the with the average depth of targets that he gets. I'd argue that this landing spot for bateman is fantastic landing spot for a rashad baby because you have an offense here with mark. He's brown and like you said. Mark brown is used primarily as deep that this is not a guy that's gonna be demanding by receiver one targets. I think he's gonna be demanding some targets. But he's the guy that's a good deep threat and he's going to have big games here and there but the baltimore. Ravens are lacking a number one receiver. And they haven't had a number one receiver for quite some years. And i can't remember quite frankly the last time they had a number one receiver and resod bateman guy to me that could hop right in there in become a true number one receiver for the baltimore. Ravens this is a great possessing catch. This is a guy that is just an all great receiver. He's going to be a great match with lamar jackson. And he's probably gonna get some solid targets away out of the gate and so i was. I'm pretty how. I was pretty high on them. Before the draft started. I had him publicly about my fourth or fifth best receiver and landing spot to me. Doesn't change anything for rashad bateman. I still think he's worthy of a late. I ask pick in dynasty rookie drafts. You could depends. Maybe even a little bit higher. But i think overall basements a great receiver and i would even argue because i know a lot of people are considering bateman to be the top of the second tier for receivers. But i would argue that. Maybe he should be considered with the first tier receivers as well because if considering jalen waddell to be in that first year a battisti receivers this year now. People are than i have to make the case. The bateman is right up there with jalen waddell because you look at geelong competition and wolf Devante parker for targets. And then you look at batman's competition for targets as well and you have like brown and the opportunity is actually better for the women's and i'd have to argue that. Lamar jackson is a better quarterback than a tiger. Ryo as well and yes. I know that they've been known for the running game in the past. But i think that's naturally because they haven't had an alpha dog receiver like rishaad based in also rashaad. Bateman is a guy that is going to be able to handle a lot more targets than jalen watteau. I don't see as high as many targets in receptions for jalen models i actually think that rashad bateman of very good receiver and he's someone worth considering in your dynasty rookie draft him would be a great value. Fell to like the back half of the first round in your dynasty rookie draft okay. Let's move on

Chiefs Trade First-Round Pick for Ravens Tackle Orlando Brown

"Draft. We're talking the NFL. We're talking Ravens. We're talking chiefs. So why not bring in Matt Verte? Ram of fan sided here to join me to talk a little chiefs and talk about this trade that went down yesterday. But first and foremost met good afternoon to you, man. Thank you for joining us. Always a pleasure having you, man. Yeah, thanks for having my pleasure, man. Well, I wanted to bring you on because I thought it was fitting T o to talk about this trade. That sort of snuck up on me at least history. We were on air doing our mock draft yesterday and kind of right before we kicked off and got on a got on air. The trade between the Ravens and the Chiefs and Orlando Brown heads over to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange. For the 31st overall pick. The Ravens will now have in this upcoming draft on on Thursday night and, ah, a couple of other pictures Well overall when you looked at this trade as the details, sort of trickled through a couple minutes afterwards, what were your original thoughts? When you saw the trade? I think obviously you and I would probably agree. It's a home run for Kansas City, Kansas City. Now takes care of their left tackle position. Long term. I actually Matt think it was a smarter and better terms of value, then going out and signing Trent Williams for whatever they ultimately I think, 120 million or some kind of crazy number that he ultimately signed in San Francisco for I think they end up with a player with I think the longer term future there in Kansas City and probably longer longer window of top and tear play. So what's your overall thoughts about the trade and maybe from both perspectives? My first thought was how the heck to Kansas City also gotta check around my thought is well, like I was done. In fact, Actually, I saw it when I saw out of jester tweeted out. Texted a shorts right away of with knowledge of the trade center. The these correct terms. I just thought it means great is out of his. I thought maybe there was a stereo type. Oh, no, that's that's that's correct. That's what it is. Okay. Um Look, I I think you know, ultimately, depending on what value Tory used, the chief basically gave up either a late first or a mid round second round pick, Um, for Brown. He's a two time pro bowler is 24 years old. He had 800 snaps at left tackle last year. He didn't give up the sack if you give up, quarterback, Okay,

"Report out that the forty niners earlier this offseason offered the twelfth overall. Pick the jets for sam darnold and the jets said no Who is dumber the jets for saying no or the forty niners for offering them. I actually don't think. I think the niners weren't at all i think i don't think either team side was dumb. Tom i think the jets side is no. I don't think either decided well. I'm very quick factor. Here this is. This has been debunked. Oh yeah very quickly while jerry thornton. It was still the number one blog on the site as far as when the down within a half hour. What Should the Atlanta Falcons Do With the 4th Pick?

"Talk about another quarterback order player Who people these days. Certainly no. and that's matt ryan about that for a transition Terrific quarterback for very long time. 2016 was his best year was the mvp of the league with the falcons and took that team all the way to the super bowl and then from that point forward it has been sued of a steady decline for the team despite making the postseason in two thousand seventeen. They've won just eighteen games over the last three years and with that regression the falcons might hit the reset button in this draft with ryan being almost thirty six. They have a new head coach. And arthur smith they have the fourth pick. Overall general manager is teri faulk no and he said quote. We wanna stack good quarterbacks. Its prime time to do it. When you have a player like matt ryan because when you can get in the white quarterback you don't have that pressure play them right away so it opens up so many possibilities and we have to make sure we're evaluating those positions and we feel good about what we where we are there a lot of different ways to take that it certainly what i would say if among other things i wanted someone to come and try and trade for my fourth pick in this draft so teddy. I'm giving it to you directly here if you were the falcons right now. Are you looking to bring in players to help matt ryan try and win a championship again or are you looking to draft his eventual replacement. Said like i said about the smokescreen season. There you go right there you make everyone think that you're okay with draft a quarterback in developing under matt ryan. But you gotta take advantage of the quarterback desperation which is in this draft and everyone one maybe sneak up if they're guy falls to four and go ahead and get him because i think they should build and they need to usually head coaches come in. And they'll want to stack pile not quarterbacks but draft picks in terms of building a foundation model for their team so i would say definitely take advantage of the fourth overall pick trade down. Try to see if you can get some building.

San Francisco 49ers trade up for the No. 3 pick

"The forty niners trade up to number three overall in the twenty twenty one draft. This was shocking. News to me. Came out right after my episode released on saturday or on friday after i sent over my episode but i normally just was not expecting Draft news to come this early. I feel like most years. The draft news comes a lot closer to the draft is still three or four weeks away but the forty niners did in their aggressive so they traded the twelfth overall. Pick a twenty twenty two third round compensatory pick and first round picks in twenty twenty two and twenty two thousand three for the miami dolphins number three overall selection so the dolphins moved to twelve where the four nine were previously listed. And now the forty niners move up to three. So what does this mean. First of all they swap a total of three first round picks. Is that smart to do. I think it is if they liked the guy. If they're convinced on one of these quarterbacks enough and they're confident that they can get them at number three. I think it's a great move because at this point the forty niners roster is loaded. They're trying to win now. And all they need is that future franchise cornerstone to kind of move that what roster forward and push them over the hump so they need to get the future of the franchise right while the roster and core are relatively young and talented like they are but overall. I think this is a great move by four hundred. Gm john lynch because he's been aggressive. He really inherited a mess in two thousand seventeen. They were coming off all the colin kaepernick drama Jim thome soula era. Which was a fun was which was really fun while it lasted Brian hoyer was his first quarterback when he got there he's made aggressive moves since he treated for jimmy garoppolo drafted. George kittle has fifth round. Pick one of the better draft picks in the past three four years. That's happened for five years. That's happened in the nfl. Just in terms of the value that he got that late in the draft

"Is disgruntled in Houston. But that's just the football aspect of night ago. He was also swinging back at the filing of a lawsuit against him alleging inappropriate conduct during massages. That lawsuit filed Tuesday. Then on Wednesday, a second lawsuit by a second planet Though both lawsuits are filed by the same attorney. The second suit, claiming Watson's behavior is quote part of a disturbing pattern of preying on vulnerable women. John McClane from the Houston Chronicle. And what we have your two of the most renowned the parties in the country. Rusty Harden, a turning to the superstars in sports. And Tony Busby, who is a wealthy developer Rooms, a law firm has been on the cover of New York Times Magazine. He's tell May all Head here. He's the one that's filed two lawsuits on the half of plaintiffs, one here and one in Atlanta, charging inappropriate sexual behavior and watchin retained Rusty Harden. His list of clients is extremely long, and he's an outstanding attorney. And so we haven't seen a response from Watts and since the lawsuit Became public and the Texans and the NFL had the response. You would expect they're aware of it. They're gathering information. And so I have no idea. What direction it's going to go. How would affect other teams that they would lowball? The Texans is something's that back away. But you know this pretty. They're gonna want these issues resolved. It was NFL investigate. And that could take a long time. Antonio Brown's has still not been resolved since last off season. So there's so much out there, Freddy about which direction it could go. And right now, nobody has any idea when I say the word timing regarding all of this. What do you say? Bad, bad timing for everybody all around bad for the Texans when they want to maximize what they can get from Watson. I've been saying they should pick the Jets and the Dolphins 2nd 3rd in the first round against each other. I have seized rivals and get the maximum deal. You know their stories about Carolina willing toe. Sacrifice the farm to get into the problem with the Panthers. There's eight overall pick, and there's no guarantee of getting a franchise quarterback that general measure necessary a likes. And so there's other reports. He wants to go to Denver. I don't know why. And then San Francisco. I can't understand wanting to play for Palestinian, but they got Jimmy Garoppolo. For while there was talk of Washington, But Washington has solved this problem, at least with free agents. So This to me is not good for watching and it's not good for the Texans.

Dallas Cowboys Reach Multi-Year Deal With Star Quarterback Dak Prescott

"Salary cabin number for two thousand and twenty one is going to be twenty two point two million dollars all right now. Head dak prescott. In franchise tag again this will happen in a procedural sense but had to cow tried to go at this with dak prescott on the franchise tag for the two thousand and twenty one season. We've talked about this a number of times. That value would have been thirty. Seven point seven million dollars so the fact that the cow is now have him onto the books. We're talking about the value that is on the books in the books. However you want to look at the books whether they're e books or physical books whatever the case may be that value is now twenty two point two million dollars now. I know that we have all said some things about the dallas cowboys but they are not complete dummies. They surely budgeted for the franchise tag value. Because let's be honest. They came about twenty four hours. We think you know. Close to having the actually placed the franchise tag and maybe carried out with that prescott. So the cowboys have room for the franchise tag at the very least so you look at that quake matt that adam schefter was kind enough to do for you. That is fifteen point. Five million dollars that the dallas cowboys suddenly have because they've got this long term deal with that prescott. This is something that we've been saying for two years now. If you do this you can. You can kick this down the road. You can prorate it you can extended you can whatever term you want to put on it. You can spread the impact of the deal out of the signing bonus of the overall guaranteed money out over the lives of the contract so it doesn't hit you all at once. That's the one killer about the franchise tag is that it is fully and completely guaranteed in franchise tag is a one year deal so the value of it last year and dak prescott was on the tag for thirty one point. Four million dollars. The two thousand twenty dallas cowboys had to absorb that value all at once and they would have had to have done it again. Here in two thousand and twenty one but because they have adjusted that they now have fifteen and a half million dollars that they were seemingly budgeting for dak prescott that now they can apply to different areas. Maybe it is a safety. Maybe it's a defensive end. Maybe it's a defensive tackle. Maybe it's you know an offensive tackle. But they want swing tackled death whatever the case may be. We know that the cowboys obviously hold the tenth overall. Pick in the draft. They could go a number of different directions there. They wanna cornerback kayla farther patrick's retain do wanna take one of the tackles and rashawn slater as all this is. This is setting up and this is an important thing. I want you to hear me here and watch me here. You cannot waste this money. If dallas cowboys the whole point and getting this done with thac prescott besides obviously establishing having the best player on your team for the foreseeable future the point in doing this is to alleviate the salary cap space now. And i don't like the term when now if you watch us often you know that but you look state of the nfc east. It is by sudha. I mean the philadelphia. Eagles are a disaster. The new york giants doping daniel jones is legitimate. The washington football team has a great team but is void of the most important position of the game and a quarterback. Maybe they'd get somebody this cycle as we all expect quarterbacks to change teams at a higher rate than usual but the case in point is at the dallas cowboys are now. We're going to see this all day on tuesday by the way and we'll talk about it of course but they're going to be overwhelming favorites to win the nfc streit and you think about the conference that they plan is really a contender in the nfc. And i mean that with all due respect to the reigning champion tampa bay buccaneers. But you've got the bucks you've got the green bay packers and then who scares you. May maybe the rams you believe in matthew stafford but the point is thinking about the afc. I mean the. Afc has the bills and the ravens and the chiefs and the titans and the steelers and the browns. I mean you could go. A number of different ways. Did the colts have carson. Wentz ends up getting his act together and so the cowboys play in the weakest division in the weaker conference and so now they have this opportunity to really kind of take their future in the here and now they have fifteen and a half million dollars that they weren't necessarily planning on having use it and if they don't use it it is all for not so i mean we are all imploring the dallas cowboys to ultimately use this salary cap space. This is a very very very luxurious gift. That they now have been afforded that they didn't previously have so shattered of course to the dallas cowboys. Let's see here let's move. I'm i wanna talk of course about the bonus the dak prescott because well. It's stupid large. I mean it's amazing. Dak prescott has now the largest signing bonus in the nfl. You look at joe flacco. Once upon a time. Got forty million. Dollars matt ryan forty six and a half. Remember if you're on the fence about this value. We've talked about this before as well. Matt ryan became the first quarterback in nfl history to average over. He had thirty but to average at least thirty million dollars per year with his new contract that he signed with the atlanta falcons in two thousand and eighteen. That was three years ago. Dak prescott signed a four six year. Deal whatever you wanna call it. That was three years ago. They matt ryan signed that he was the first quarterback to hit the thirty million dollars a year. Mark prescott just hit forty but the reality and we've been saying this forever is that there are so many deals coming around the bend. Josh allens gotta get paid. Lamar jackson's gotta get paid. Baker mayfield's got to get paid extra calories. He's going to get paid the year after that. It's going to be time for joe burrow to finally get paid and when all of those players get paid this forty million dollars a year. Mark the dak prescott got this one hundred twenty six million dollar. Total guaranteed is sixty six million dollar signing bonus all these things that are currently the top of the nfl. The most in nfl history. That's the verbiage in determining that you're hearing associated with this and it's all literally true but it's all going to get pushed down because all of these players on this list. Joe flacco matt ryan matthew stafford at fifty million signing bonus. Aaron rodgers fifty. Seven and a half russell wilson not going to be a dallas cowboy now by the way sixty five million dollars. Dak prescott topped that all of these quarterbacks in all likelihood we'll top that that's the reality of the nfl things are always moving in one direction. It is up

Rudy Gobert's Transformation Started In The D-League

"On sunday rudy. Gobert made his second straight appearance in an nba. All star game. Tom make it a second confederate and for years. Now the big man with the even bigger wingspan. There's been a dominant force within the nba. Tolbert defensive player of the year. There was a time when that was not the case. Time when rudy gobert future was very much in doubt. Today the fx christopher come ronnie takes us back to the time when go gobert was uncertain about where it was headed and explains how he climbed his way to the top. They knew that if he could fill out if he could continue to develop defensively and add various tidbits to his game. Offensively could potentially become a game changer in the league. That's their mind in rudy's mind. He always believed that he would took from wondering athletic. I'm under scotto. It's monday march eighth. And this is the league. It felt like something great emotion and ask past. I s not get this. This is here. you're gonna be the athlete. It stays with you so chris basketball fan today. Think of rudy gobert this absolute force you know a guy who dominates around the rim often makes other teams change their style of play when they face him. But you recently spoke with rudy and wrote about how that has not always been the case so take us back to the days when rudy gobert was not yet rudy. Gobert there. Yes so rudy. Gobert was drafted by the denver nuggets in two thousand thirteen and acquired by the jazz in a draft night. Trade played for show les the french league and his sizeable things into the twenty seventh overall. Pick and he came into the league as a relative unknown. What you'll bring to this team. I mean i i know. You're very long and and a defensive presence. What do you think you can. How can you help this team right away right away. Yeah can we. He had worked his way up the international level coming up in france he had to work himself onto the radar of even french national teams. He wasn't really all that known as a fifteen sixteen year old. How long have you been playing basketball nine years nine. So did you grow up playing soccer before he was on jazz team. That had several high draft picks on it. They had derrick favors. Ns canter to former high draft picks. Big men that played rudy's position. They had a veteran and andreas. Who was a veteran presence on that team as a big man and under that regime rudy kind of found himself as the odd man out but the jess drafted him and took him on as a project and he apparently was not the most stylish guy. What he i community league. yes so obviously. When you're twenty one year old seven foot one kit. That's tall and gangly. It's hard to find clothes that fit you. Great i was going to be on. Is doing right now if you see rudy these various nba awards where he's won the nba defensive player of the year. Two times now. He's showing up and looking very much like a stylistic parisian that he probably always wanted to be back in two thousand thirteen when he was still sort of odd man out on the jazz as you put it. He got sent down to the bakersfield jam of what was then the d. league. i from a life standpoint. What was it. Like for rudy gobert. End up so far off the beaten path and you know in one of the rougher parts of california yes so it's a culture shock for anybody. I think who wants to be a professional basketball player to have to go to a place like bakersfield. California bakersfield has kind of a rough and tumble streak about it. It isn't the most friendliest places. Well tonight we are taking an in depth look into black tar heroin and its presence here in kern county. Rudy's coach will void talked about it would be culture shock for anybody. Let alone a parisian arriving in bakersfield. Which is we're like community area where where are rena and everything was based. That is kind of like mess. Mess capital of the world. So i think he was not going to find a croissant sprint. Snow and anywhere around there. The coaches just told him to stay in his hotel room. And just relax tries to be honest. tells hotel for the most in when he wanted to go work out at the gym. the bakersfield complex. Philadelphia Eagles trade QB Carson Wentz to Indianapolis Colts for two draft picks

"Story of the day. The Eagles have traded quarterback Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts and oh my goodness. It made me very happy. I was so excited. There's a lot to unpack. I want to start though by mentioning a weird thing first. In the 2016 NFL draft the number and overall pick was Jared Goff. The number two overall pick was Carson Wentz. And both have been traded away from the teams. They were drafted by 19 days apart. Just a weird quick doesn't happen very often the guy a number and overall pick a number 2 overall pick gets traded away. Especially not the quarterback position. Let alone almost in just over two weeks apart from each other. That's crazy. Pretty wild now after the trade the Eagles have a 33.8 Million Dead money. Salary cap charge for the 2021 NFL season what that means I will get into that in a minute. First of all, that's actually by the way the most ever to have dead money cap. I guess charge or penalties by an NFL team. It's so much that I actually thought that might keep the Eagles from trading cars and stuff like that might be so much of a penalty. They're not even getting rid of the guy sounds like they did. I thought it's good for everybody Carson Wentz wanted out they I think we're you know, we'll talk about Jalen hurts in a minute, but I thought it was good to get Carson out of there. It is also kind of weird and interesting I talked about Jared Goff previously very briefly the other the the record for the most amount of dead money against the salary cap was Jared Goff. The Rams amount is 22.2 million dollars off. Beat 19 days later by the Carson Wentz trade what is dead money? You may ask it's basically all the guaranteed money the Eagles still owe Carson Wentz after the trade. So even though Carson is no longer on their team. He still creates a thirty three point eight million dollar cap hit for next year. So over thirty-three million dollars off of the salary cap has taken up for Philadelphia. They cannot use that money for other players. It's weird. It's interesting. It's never that's again the most ever pretty interesting. I was surprised that you know, they still trade off a given that but in the trade the Colts got Carson Wentz so the cold they get their quarterback that the replacement Philip Rivers the replacement for Andrew Luck. I'm happy for the Colts man. They've they've Way to make it work. They lost in Turlock. They had to scramble the Mage Jacoby Brissett work for a year. They made Philip Rivers work for a year. Now. They've got what they believe is their franchise guide Carson Wentz good for them. The Eagles got a 2001 third-round pick for the upcoming NFL draft and a conditional 2022 second-round pick and here's what's really cool. The condition. Is that if Carson Wentz plays 75% off Kohls offensive snaps for next year if it stays healthy place the whole year or you know, it's good enough to be the starter all years and get benched. Then that draft pick goes from a second round pick in 2022 to a first-round picks. Oh, wow. I like about that. People are saying the Eagles got a horrible trade. They got fleeced. It's terrible. Oh my goodness. You gotta realize this is probably the best trade they could possibly find the Eagles traded away Carson Wentz a guy who has an injury history has been injured repeatedly over the years. He's coming off of a horrible season where he was so bad the dude got benched for Jalen hurts a rookie quarterback Club. So the fact that Philadelphia made a trade where they have an opportunity to get a first-round pick that's impressive to me. I think people realize that's the best they were going to get so anybody criticizing Philadelphia you did not realize how I think how little value Carson Wentz really had on the market people like nobody really wants him. I think JJ Watts getting a ton of attention Carson Wentz people are very wary. And I think it's really what's really disappointed me. Is that the Bears didn't get him. What did the Bears did the Bears not want him? I don't understand. Maybe they're trying to John Watson feel like the Bears really lost here. They still got home key who Carson Wentz has problems I think is way better than Mitchell trubisky. So debate that all you want. I don't know how you go. Like. Oh the Bears they got a great quarterback still trubisky. I like it. I think another thing people got realize is that I love the trade for Carson Wentz. He's going to a way better team he gets to play for his former offensive coordinator Frank back in 2017 the best year Carson Wentz ever had in the NFL. He was a before he got hurt. He was an MVP candidate playing under Frank Reich. He's reuniting with that guy that's going to be awesome to got a great relationship and EM the Colts have a great offensive line. They've got to get running game. They've got a great defense Carson Wentz is being put into a great situation. If he does not do well then there's no excuse. You can make he's got great great team around him good support good people. He's getting helped.

Who is QB2 in 2021 NFL Draft?

"It would have been fully justified and with that we welcome you back as always live from the seaport district appear seventeen brought to you by chase. I green this get up and we have a huge our coming your wine. It starts with this. It's a quarterback sneak mc shays make board is in and wait till you see the first four picks. He's with us live to break down off the top. Then wait a minute. What did russell say. Is he talking about getting sri. Didn't from seattle the wild ride in. Nfl history continues. And then we'll tell you how the shawn watson saga plays out and what it will mean for every team in the nfl. All that and more as we get out with you when this hour which starts right now with todd mcshay post super bowl mock draft. It's available right now on espn plus all it. It's fascinating a number one. That's no big surprise. He's got trevor lawrence going number one to urban meyer and the jaguars. But here's where it gets interesting. He also has quarterbacks going to three and four at two he has the jets taking. Byu's zack wilson who has been rising up. Everybody's draft what he has been be talk of the nfl draft process so far at three overall. He's projecting trade the panthers moving up from eight to take north dakota state's train lance to be their quarterback of the future which leaves ohio states justin field sitting there. Four and mcshea has the falcons taking him fields the second highest total qbr in college football season and then jones sliding down a little bit later to make five quarterbacks in the first round in there he is the man with the mic board. It is mcshea and it's awesome. Let's start with this todd. We all understand. Trevor lawrence going number one. Nothing even to discuss. How firmly planted in. Your mind is zack. Wilson right now as the number two quarterback in this draft. I think very firmly. The first thing i do when the season is over and a govan studied the top quarterbacks. Because i know that's what we're going to talk about for the majority of this process leading up to the draft and after lawrence. There's a little bit of a gap and then at zack wilson. And then there's a gap between gods trey lance from north dakota state and justin feels from ohio state. So i think he is clearly the number two quarterback in this class. The question becomes greenie. Is that the jets taking two or the jets gonna move out and allow a team like a carolina to that number two spot to take him. And that all depends on the domino's in terms of the veteran quarterbacks right now where does shawn watson wind up carson wentz. We know is going to get moved to chicago indianapolis. I think joe douglas. The general manager is kind of waiting. And seeing some of these other quarterbacks go and he's fielding phone calls he's not aggressively making calls but fielding calls to see maybe if they can move sam darnold and if they do exactly since the pick for the jets at number two and if not as i said i think the jets will move outta to and wilson will still wind up being that number number two overall pick in this class. I grew the. I've been saying for a while. I agree with you completely. He'll be number two. The question is who winds up making the peck. Then the other part of this is. I'm old enough to remember a time when we wondered if justin fields might supplant trevor lawrence as the number one draft now all of a sudden these the fourth quarterback off the board. How did that happen. You go back. And study games against indiana northwestern. And then the college football playoff national championship game against alabama. He completed around fifty two percent of throws with five interceptions. Those games in my opinion. You look at it physically. He's big. he's sturdy strong who mobile. He's got a big arm all the traits that you look for. But he likes to see his receivers. Come open and get stuck on that. I read very frequently. So you compare him with trae. Lance and i have identical grades on the to train. Lance didn't play the level of competition. Didn't play as many games as is justin fields but i think he processes the game a little quicker in terms of going from his first into a second and third and seeing the entire field. So it won't surprise me if it feels is third quarterback off the board. But i think they're kind of bunched together in that third tier of quarterbacks behind lawrence wilson and then the other two and then i want to ask you about the guy that you currently have fifth because i'm a regular listener of the first draft podcast and so i'm listening the other day to you and field. Yates and mel kiper talking about what was going on at the senior bowl and everyone is raving about matt jones. Your buddy mel had max jones moving this thing and i believe he has him sort of. I believe he hasn't projected higher than you have in projected. What do you see for mack. Jones as this process goes on the fifth quarterback in the first round. Well i think what's going to happen. He's matt jones is going to benefit from the fact that these four quarterbacks are gonna come off the board quickly and it's probably going to be cut because of trades moving up. I have matt jones going number twelve overall right now in a i had chicago moving up to twelve in san francisco. Moving back to twenty we have to see where carson wentz go. It does go to

"first overall pick" Discussed on The Bill Barnwell Show

"Bard Mobile Show I we're here on Thursday October tenth two thousand nineteen later today there's going to be what will surely be very exciting giants patient we're gonNA talk about those offenses today and joining us to do that is the NFL editor at USA Today Sports Media Group is a longtime friend of mine. Football outsiders does excellent we're covering the NFL it's Doug Farrar Doug how are you good bill I always have to mention football outsiders two thousand six draft class Lugo it just I don't know if there's anyone in the draft class besides us too so it's it's good they they traded up they got to one blue chip prospect new and then whatever I am but that class seems to have gone okay I I was the the mid school guy who didn't go to College Eric Salon yeah yeah I'm not sure ruining this by the way you play running back for the giants tonight they'll play back for the giants I've seen good Lord is it usually ends with you getting injured so I would qualify pretty easily for that but yeah that's a bit of a mess and we're going to Golden Tate and Chelsea as far as the weapons go Evan Ingram's at all the running back throughout oh here comes the best defense in Devi away history through five weeks unfired stretching those guys I read about Saquon Barkley rushing the comeback I'm just thinking what are you rushing for like like giants don't need to win this year didn't take it easy thanks one hundred percent no no need to spring back onto the field with a we appreciate your competitiveness please take a seat yeah exactly just maybe just plan for a while and just be competitive way just just chill yes we're ready for you when you're ready but yeah did you you virtual we'll routes for like a month and then you can take your own pace exactly and the giants granted might be better with back in the lineup as opposed to the players that do have but Odell Beckham it's made its way to Cleveland and I don't think it's related to Beckham but the Cleveland Browns also struggling on offense they are if I'm not mistaken to use the stat from the the the draft university we've we both came from football outsiders the twenty-ninth in offensive devious Robert Mays put it in his column today three teams below the browns are Washington just fired their coach the jets whose quarterbacks mononucleosis and the dolphins who are trying to win football games which is bad you don't Wanna be ahead of only those three teams three teams fairly NFL teams it's it's been a mess Cleveland and so that let's start with I guess the the most obvious target I think that's come out over the past weeks Baker Mayfield how much of what's happened In Cleveland over the past few weeks do you put on his shoulders. Well this I mean this downturn is particularly to to start with the overviews down ernest particularly remarkable in that in the second half of the season in two thousand eighteen and this is after they fired Haley fired Jackson they put Freddie the church the browns would from a belief twenty ninth in passing DVD. Way Too I that's where the best they're the best passing team per de Vito a in the second half of the two thousand eighteen season and you figure you know they're gonNA figure the Okla they're gonNA see the guy out a little bit maybe they'll take away his first because you know I mean the the narratives about Mayfield that are true are still true he's as I read guy he's a quick processor when he knows what he's seeing he's very decisive and definitive as thrower when you give him either a single sorta I read open concept or a crosser or rub where it's easy you know it's it's one or two it's not it's what I would call at this point is grew binary quarterback you know it's he's got he can choose one of two things and the thing about Baker and I'll go to Jacksonville for a second what they're doing with Minhsiu this year because I think mentioned was a very similar quarterback Mayfield they're doing it China my job giving him options that are obvious I don't mean to say that he is unintelligent because both into and Mayfield are very very highly intelligent people and quarterbacks but they're they're giving them I guess what I would call for my own shorthand binary res it's a one zero it's this or that and what critic kitchens did when he took over that offense last year it was a lot of you know it was a lot of crossers lot of rub concept it was and one thing I do WanNa Watch tate when I watched the all twenty two in game pass is when I'm studying quarterback in depth I like this stop pause the both the overhead and the end zone camera right when the quarterback has taken his plant drop and he's you know he's got Hich is gonNA throw but I wanNA posit right there I wanna see where his receivers are what his receivers are doing and if you do that in game pass with the two thousand eighteen in the two thousand eighteen rounds I think you're GonNa see something very there's a stark difference in what Mayfield is seeing what he's allowed to see with about concepts for a couple of things the browns are believed twice third in pace this year offensive paste seconds per play there I'm not doing quick game well their formation diversity is shot to hack they're running what is it like seventy five percent eleven person now it's really high and and Mayfield efficiency and eleven is seventy percent looking at short for all analysis for this Seventy eight percent is quarterback rating seventy three point three everyone twelve personnel eighteen percent of the time his quarterback rating twelve as one forty three point nine now you can attribute some of that uh-huh maybe better protection but a couple of things are happening to Mayfield's perception of the play in the doubt when he hits his back foot in twenty eighteen he knows what he's seeing he's got a confident reviews making a confidence throw when he is based on this is on my base observations I'm not in the room with Freddie I don't know why she baker Mayfield Drop to throw in twenty nineteen still waiting for the routes to develop he's not confident thrower he's not seeing binary all of a sudden they're all these colors that he's not seen before he's never you know he's not that sort of second to third level of the field where when you hit your plant foot when you're back foot and you're going to then you know hitch up to make your throw or roll boot or whatever you're doing you have a confident read multiple times this season especially if you look at his interception the visit incompletions obviously but I mean I mean he's making some plays in that sorta yuan gated structure but I think what the offense of coaching staff has done to his detriment in twenty nineteen is they've taken away if we say a play last three seconds they've taken away a lot of the first one point five seconds and they're asking him to create structure in the second one point five seconds you've never done that before so I think he's he's playing catch up in his head and I know a lot of this is a true to the offensive line yeah the offensive line and said problems but What if you're ill in the car they're McCarthy sorry Aaron rodgers marriage it's really Aaron Rodgers for God's sake it's seven o'clock on the Pacific on me break here if you remember Aaron Rodgers getting very skittish in the Mike McCarthy era when he wasn't gene openings over and over and over over time if openings are not created for you I don't care how your erogenous the greatest quarterback I've ever seen I'm not that's not probably the greatest physically gifted quarterback I've ever seen in my life you beat them over the head with that garbage those garbage through enough years he's going to look like David car that's just the way it is so I think what's on Mayfield is he's being asked. you a graduate degree of quarterback reading when really he's kind of a junior so I think you're asking me yes you do too much interesting I think to your point you know it seems like and I'm not the only person who said this person who's who's sort of commented on this it's pretty yes when you watch you know Baker play for any time when he sort of does get to you know the point where he is supposed to be ready to throw in is there it seems like he has a very very consistent habit of just either extending his drop and so making it hard for his office alignment to protect him or mo most frequently drifting to the right to try and sort of create something and and teams that seems like on defense or noticing that Matthew sack or credit the pressure on the final play of the game against rams where he waited for Baker to drift right maze in his column stay pointed that play where you know coordinators were we're basically waiting for him to drift to the right and then having their their lineman sort of twist over aside and be there by the by the way just interrupt the jets do really good job that they williams and of course wings with no his tendencies the skiing his rollouts incredibly wealth so I mean you know is that something where you're surprised the browns having put more of an emphasis on trying to fix that or not yes that's what Baker is GonNa do I don't know because again I mean and I wrote I think it was three or four weeks into the fray kitchens wrote a piece about it it was working and so much of it was like I mean he's it's interesting 'cause he stole a lot of Concerts Bay there was touch the chiefs and week nine. he they ran a double slant in the red zone which of course is mcvay staple they're running you know wheel crossers they're running you know oh crossers to both sides he was seeing a lot of things that he saw in college and it was comfortable for him and these are concepts can win in the NFL If I were to boil it down to one thing you know and I don't know how much this big Mayfield's fault per se but I think what happens when you and I mean I'm I live in Seattle I watched every snap Russell Wilson's taken I've seen a lot of snaps and practice I mean there were times early in his career where if he didn't see what he wanted he would run around and you know get sacked or make a stupid throw once in a while and that it happens that's part of your development is a quarterback I don't know if the browns are saying to Baker Okay we ran this hippie high school stuff last year defenses are going to figure so we now have to become more evolved. I think it's a common mistake that coaching staffs make too quickly with young quarterbacks if that's what they've said I wouldn't be surprised because that's what I see on the field all right let's talk more about the browns struggles on offense in a moment but first guy let's say the best offense is a good defense that's especially true when it comes to.

"To gauge in the world and i think what his ability to do those things he can play so you could play pinch posts he can pass off the ice oh he can do so many different things it makes their team extremely hard to be the new klay in there is defensive versatility and then they start iggy as well he can guard one through five so you have all these players who can guard one through five so the now it just turns into the rock is trying to exploit mismatches because there's only one guy out there offensively harder has a true advantage over and that steph steph curry checking him so they tried to get him and pick and rolls over and over again at some point he wears out or that'd be fatigued whether that'd be the team just helping calls and other guys shoot you talked about the catch shoe percentage in how you know in the in the regular season rocket shot sixty one percent and now they're shooting extremely worse is two things the weird defense is great they switch a lot they they're causing you know having they're making people they want to shoot shoot trevor rees is of the world some of those guys who are very good players in the own right but they're not james hardie and chris paul and other factor is it is the playoffs there's there's pressure now states have risen you want sixty five games you're position to potentially play for a championship so those shots are a little bit different and i think we're starting to see that throughout the series and see why a lot of people pick the ways to win in five or six just quoting steve kerr briefly after game three he says oh my gosh drew him on there's nobody like him honestly he is the impetus as durant to golden state being able to switch every thing they want defensively every ball screen every staggers whenever they want houston can't do it and if you want to oversimplify things that is a big difference in this series and you mentioned curry's defense i'm glad you did he he's actually done a fairly decent job in this series defensively just to give you an idea he's been targeted forty three times forty three shots on them in allowed forty four percent twentythree from three hard and has been targeted fifty one times and his allowing fifty five.

"Why go back to boston should that should translate whether you're big or small or whatever it is you should be able to guard cleveland cleveland has been really good when they go pick and roll with with either love or the bron or or love or hill and i just wonder how much they'll continue exposing that because especially at home boston's clearly not defending at the same clip in the playoffs on the road okay i wondering can we switch series to houston golden state what's been the biggest surprise for you in this series was it steph struggling and then coming back to earth or come back to life was it draymond fantastic defensive performance in game three is it hard and struggling or the insular reports for houston where what is really stood out to you yeah i mean first of all i'm not surprised at all because i said that the rockets didn't have a chance i said they had a chance but it's very very unlikely they'll win win the series so i'm not surprised i've seen how good the words are with steph i've seen how good they are without steph and people have argued whether or not he's fully healthy i'm not sure just seems to be a lot of people you know making excuses for his play but i think overall he says he's healthy his his trainer outside of the team says he's healthy his staff says he's healthy whether or not he's in rhythm is is completely different whether or not he's in physical game shape is completely different story but i think he just missed shots and the first three games and the war is such a good team he doesn't need to play well for them to win but when he does play well they're extremely hard to be you can't turn the ball over you can't have wasted possessions you can't not get back in transition you can't give open corner threes if some of the best shooters in the nba and houston rockets did all those things in in the previous game that allowed the warriors kinda run away with it and then they allow steph to finish around the basket you know him making contested three points is one thing you know up until he got some easy lay ups in the second half he was struggling he was struggling from three he missed open threes his handle was.

"Mutation changes alver talked about it you know not having those defensive breakdowns to where they are smith's able to over helping the over helped to game three right over help jr in cal core being able to seem the ball on three pointers you should have to shoot they shouldn't have to shoot so fast and able to seem the ball they're walking into three pointers and lebron's going back door with no help on the weak side bad show i think there was a possession where lebron drove baseline help came terriers ears on the backside he didn't crack down so just a little things that they do extremely well at home they didn't do in that game the previous night and they haven't done throughout the entire playoffs so i think communication will be a huge factor going forward in shot making ability in the cavs had open shots on the road and they missed them they made fifty fifty one percent of open shots in games one and two engaged three they had the same looks they made sixty one or sixty two percent of those open shots or wide open shots on think that's the difference cavs made open shots at a higher rate boston only missed open shots but they didn't ask the difference event and you can't do those two things against arguably the best player in the game so i think that's been the biggest factor for them and they're a young team you know it's hard to play on the road when know when you're younger you you lacked experience that you know other guys have haven't played in those big moments that's what i was asking about the experience because smart and rosiere about twenty four browns twentyone tatum twenty really the only experience guy that gets that they really lean on his horford and i just wonder in game four if brad stevens will be able to make adjustments as he's done throughout the playoffs to get him more looks because for horford i take four shots just doesn't make any sense he's just too good of a player so i would imagine that but the whole thing with youth to like heaven we've said on this show that sometimes inexperienced can help because.

"Had you said before one of the differences is playing at home the cavs were very very good team at home they shoot a lot better the rule players are more comfortable a lot of those guys have families so being able to be around your family lot more you've got kids sleep on your own bed all those things play a factor but one of the most underrated aspects of this series and this series in past games has been the boston celtics inability to win on the road they've struggled they've struggled against every team in the playoffs on the road haven't haven't been able to kind of you know win those tough crucial games and i think that game is going to do a lot of damage to the psyche similar to that that rockets in warrior series to where you get blown out in a pivotal game against argue wanted to best players to ever played a game and lebron james you see the excitement he has you see how comfortable he is at home playing peekaboo with his daughter which is one of the better viral clips we've seen alongside you holiday you know being able to play peek a boo with his daughter as well i think it's kasim six i think could potentially run off three straight which would be four and closed the series out in hurry here's what i'll say about about boston to your point cj about them not translating on the road i don't understand it and can you speak to where your where your thought is on why they can't win the role because if you're going to be the number one defensive efficiency team in the league as a celtics word this year defense usually travels that's why utah was good this year and one of the reasons why because they guard people even on the road boston is one in six on the road in the playoffs they have not lost a home game in the playoffs i just can you explain to me why they're struggling like this first of all that's od i didn't know they hadn't lost a home game in the playoff that's crazy i think a lot of things factor in the lack of defensive execution i think the effort is there they play hard they're well coached marcus smart out there over there a lot of guys able to guard multiple positions in switch i think.

"Be starting to improve an intensified the workout to your shortly in terms of lifting weights jumper open and doing more impact stuff as well as shooting in the gym before i begin my serious work and today's in miami in june really really looking forward to that and looking forward to give him back to the to plan it's really hard to watch these playoff games and speaking of playoff games we have one tonight jordan what are your thoughts who do you think is going to win this game and who do you think is going to win this series cleveland wins this game and the series and for me cj comes down to really simple lebron james best player in the world i'm saul what he was able to do in game three now i thought going into game three cleveland would absolutely take care of business but the way they did it was unbelievable what i mean by that is not only do they blow out boston by forty one points but they completely vaporize al horford he took four shots the guy's been unbelievable in the playoffs they they said you know what we're gonna make everybody else beat us and we know that horford's the impetus to what boston wants to do on both sides of the ball so i was really impressed with with what the game plan was i thought tyler rent some really good action off the ball so that lebron didn't have to do everything on the ball that he could relax a little bit other guys removing and when you have all five starters in double digits even though none of them went for twenty it helped lebron's and it helped him on different to side of the ball as well so i would expect more of the same game for yeah i'm with you on that i think what into this series i had to cast win and six and i think people kinda overreacted to the success boston had playing in boston a lot of young talent a lot of guys rose to the occasion you mentioned horford being affective not only in this series but throughout the playoff entirety continue to dominate on all on all facets of the game with it ebb scoring off the dribble posts in making shots or potentially playing stellar defense on love as well as other players but i think.

"Interior was flurry cleveland browns quarterback is what is about as fast as you make the argument redrafted quarterback where we know the success the patriots had getting a quarterback in the sixth round there you go we're going to move on she came griffin the other star of this combine weekend he was projected to go in the fifth or sixth round going into this combine after seeing what he did kevin blackstone you're going to take him on the first day i don't know if i'll take him on the first day but the sad thing is is that the only reason we're having this this this conversation is because of the situation that he has physically but the repressive thing about this is with the interesting thing is is that he has dealt with this his entire life and he has made the incredible adjustments in a few if you've read the story about him is his biography i mean is absolutely heart wrenching what he went through with the disease that he had which resulted in the amputation of of his hand so i think that if you look at the way he performed as a collegiate football player the way he stood out on that in that peach bowl this is a guy who you want to draft high of the tour the combine tends to be a lot of sham fortunetelling for a lot of guys but in this case it is so useful because the draft and the combo and combined to a couple of things well they standardised variables they're all taking the same test check griffin has proven himself to do that the test how prepared you are shack griffin is wildly prepared and other third benefit for him that so key is that a general manager who wants to take him on the first day where i think you should probably be taken now has cover here's measurable it's not him to vining some reason as to why this kid is good he points to the numbers and says this is why if he had two hands this would not be a conversation so why is it if he's performance is not at all impact because he has one.

"If i'm the cleveland browns and running back hasn't gone number one in twenty three years really the team that's about to do that after the kind of track record i've had and you're right tim zeke ezekiel elliott leonard 'fernet those are good reasons to say you have maybe i should go high with the runningbacks but then i look at karim hunt you can get him in the third round the problem with runningbacks we know it guys short lifespan and not as valuable in today's nfl as they have been in the past and you can find him in the later rounds if on the cleveland browns i'm trading that pick tony because i get the first pick and the number four pick i can get a quarterback with one of those two and then i get some extra players because i need help everywhere abu tour brown's do have a lot of experience just punching themselves in the groin so it would be nice to get so you can too it won't be nice and i am going to lean and tim's direction on this because it is true that if sake one barkley and a quarterback who was the talent equivalent of sake one barkley we're both available i would take the quarterback with the question here really is is a barkley the special generational talent and all signs are pointing to yes and jackie your point about karim hunt is well taking your points implied also about alvin chimera another third rounder is welltaken but the fact remains if you were to redo that draft those guys will probably both be top10 picks and the question for the browns these do you want to let that caliber of player slip through your fingers even if you're the browns i'm guessing they want to take the burden hand who happens to be maybe the best running back of his generation given black is still no no no and here's the problem right i value of the running back has been slipping for about twenty years in 2015 it was valued at about seven theft the 2017 through is down to ten th this is not a reflection on the running back some cells.
