Trial for accused gunman in Pittsburgh synagogue massacre slated to start
"The suspect in a 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue massacre is set to go on trial today in the nation's deadliest anti semitic attack. The federal trial of Robert Bowers comes four and a half years after the shooting deaths of 11 worshipers from three congregations meeting at the tree of life synagogue. Bowers could face the death penalty if convicted of some of the 63 counts he faces. These include 11 counts, each of hate crimes resulting in death. Prosecutors have said Bowers made anti semitic comments at the scene of the attack and online. The trial follows a monthlong jury selection process, Bowers a truck driver from a Pittsburgh suburb, offered to plead guilty in return for a life sentence, but prosecutors turned him down. Josef Newgarden used a one lap shootout to grab the lead from 2022 champ Marcus Ericsson to win the Indy 500. You know, I wasn't looking to take anyone else out of the race, but I was going to put my car on the line to win. And I was either going to win the race or I was going to end up in the wall. Newgarden driving for team owner Roger Penske survived a chaotic final 40 miles, which saw the race stop three times for Rex. Major League Baseball the rays win a wild one over the Dodgers in Tampa Bay, correspondent Steve Carney provides the details. The Tampa Bay Rays used a 7th inning RBI ground out by wander Franco to break a ten ten tie and defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 11 to ten. Both starters got hit around as Gavin stone allowed 7 runs in two innings of work, while Josh Fleming allowed ten runs in 6 innings, including 5 home runs, Tampa Bay finishes at ten game home stands 7 and three, while the Dodgers complete their longest road trip of 2023 with a four and 6 Mark. You can't just end it right now. But if he if he doesn't show that he's that he's doing something in in the next week or so. You gotta make some serious decisions but even in the in the in the mid term while you're waiting for that he doesn't need to play every single day you can mix things you can send some messages. "We got lots of them since our last show. And and some odd wants some catchers zach collins not the portland forward but the white sox catcher and kyle farmer. I is there anything there. I mean i as count holiday because definitely matters yes. Monte groundouts probably going on the injured list today and collins will be the starting catcher for the white sox but is it. Is there a pathway to relevance in a ten team league like would you add him in a one catcher the you know and to catcher league. I think you can make the case right and like he takes. Walks doesn't he. He does he whips a lot. There's a ton of swing and miss his game. That's the big problem. You're going for the all or nothing. Potential power outcome and if you look at his numbers the power hasn't been to the level. I was expecting during his prospect status with you to catcher league type. I also be a little worried. The white sox have to seek another catcher. They have lost so many key. Contributors to that lineup. They've got to do something. And if the backstop is where they can add a player a meaningful name. That's going to work against him. Yeah i mean. We'll see i don't want to over eight collins by the other catcher right now. They just called up somebody. Today i saw. That's not mercedes. Yeah good pitch selection making more contact the big jump for him that he's much more disciplined the season. That's really helping him. Not a star but also a guy is not going to hurt you in most fantasy categories unfortunate. Since i wrote about him. He hasn't been quite as great. So it's probably the fifteen mix where you're going to maximize the always on the gayle. These saturday and sunday. Eli white texas trevor story. Who's a great story. I really should be in the all star game. It's kind of a shame. He's not games denver. I don't you know baseball. Continues to do smart things harrison baiter on sunday and. Because he's a he's a homer he's a guy who was great speed. He can still basis a little pop against lefties but a low batting average type guy. So i would ask you this. What do you do with our in a fantasy league right now. We don't know how much time he's going to miss. It might only be one start this week. He might come back right after the all star break and he might be fine and we rank them among the top. Five starting pitchers in all fantasy. He's really only good on the field. But do you try to trade him right now. You're always in dropping him right. You probably can't trade him for value at this point because there was concern that he's going to get suspended miss more time and then again he might not be and in a week he might be in the rotation. So what does the fantasy implication to what's going on with him. A lot of these things are very unknown and uncertain because we haven't had a a history of however will deals with these things so i have no clue what the length of absence is going to be I do believe because he's got an out designation. You could put him on the injured list. I don't have a share in an espn link. So i can't tested myself. But i think the player with the o. designation can and if that's the case you just put on the sidelines and see what you know how this plays out. I don't think you can trade them. I don't think you should try to trade him. I just don't think that's a viable option for you and you know we'll we'll see how this plays out. It's a it's a disturbing troubling situation. I mean when he's on the mount. He's talented pitcher moving on now. Let's do the combo meals. Oh there was one other thing. I wanted to get to six. "Might be. Yeah i would hope in the situation that you don't have a glut of injured less players. I do a couple of leagues. So i understand it. If you're in that situation. I think it's okay to let him go. I would prefer to try to keep them around. If i could zach gallon of arizona's just sat down on the field after throwing a pitch. They say it's a mild hamstring strain but arizona's a mess and they don't win very much and anzac. That gown is very good but this looks like a pitcher who's not going to have a great final second half of the season to me like maybe it's because injury maybe it's because of performance or not getting wins but like i don't see how we could rank that gown as a top twenty five starting pitcher and fantasy for the final three months based on his situation. Yes and a lot of that has to do with this. Being the third injured list stint. I can't recall what the first one was coming out of. Spring training began the year on the injured that was elbow and we thought it was elbowing the first time right. I mean i thought that was the second indra. I thought that was the main one. Well i it was. One of them is what i'm saying. Yeah there was definitely one where we were worried. he could be headed for. Tommy john i do recall that i think that was the may one. I don't remember the opening day could have been the same but the fact that these are two different injuries and he's at a difficult time building his himself back up to pitching at the level he did in the previous two years. That's what bugs me. I i'm with you. I don't think you can make the case for top twenty five. Because i don't think he gets to that volume and there will be the risk of re injury. He had a hairline fracture and his forearm in late march and then the elbow is in early. May so you add all these things up and it gets to be a little bit concerning and this is very promising. Young starting pitcher. And that's why we get concerned any other injuries that i i don't want to miss anything here. I'm looking at the most added droplets because that generally tells us who is injured because people are just you know leaving a positive injury note. I mean since. "All star break should be a wild homerun derby next week in denver Tristan how are you hope you have a nice weekend. I did i did. It was a very nice relaxing weekend. Pretty decent weather overall for the most part of the last couple rain days. And i'm really thrilled to see that. Shohei otani is on the all star game as a two player. Actually why i'm gonna. I don't always watch the all star game because it's you know it's not normal baseball but i- everything is doing. I'm watching its course field. And it's a designated hitter game. At least at last. I checked it was because there were designated hitters in the voting. And i just want to see the roster maneuvering like how do they handle. How do they handle otani getting into that game as a pitcher on this is the stuff i love about baseball at. He leads the league in home runs. I mean unbelievable. What he's doing right now. And you know if i was thinking about it like who is the player of the year so far in the first half of the season the seasons roughly half over right now so the player of the year. I mean how can it not be otani amis leading the league at home runs. And he's pitching. He's pitching well enough to matter to be relevant. He's number two on the play writer behind fernando totti's junior but how can otani not be our fantasy player the first half of the season. I don't see how he can't. He's been available to people the entirety of the year. He was going one. Seventy five to two hundred overall i i saw leagues where he was definitively after the top two hundred picks he's got four hundred and thirty fantasy points if you combine his hitting in his pitching now. You can't use them because you can't use hitting a bitch at the same time just said that on the thursday show with aj. But i would say that the available points to you. He is by far the most in the league. And you see in the playwright or numbers as well i i. Can't it's indescribable. What he is doing. I mean it's it's never been seen in the history of the game. I'm sorry no. This is not babe ruth like. This is a guy who was putting up great numbers on both sides of the ball. He's an unbelievable hitter though unbelievable babe. I see him dive at shortstop. I get concerned. But i mean what a player just. What an unbelievable player he. The greatness of those names is what makes it difficult to make a case for anybody else and by the way. I'm sorry you're correct. Otani was in the top. Ninety overall pixie sword in the final two weeks of adp during spring training was around one twenty at the midway point of guess just people were chasing the names. I remember you. And i were discussing them. We just didn't think he was really a top hundred guy. Explains how great. He's been the one. I would make the case for in the top three. I actually think. Marcus semi deserves a mention here. As a potential fantasy hitter of the year in terms of value he was a guy was not going in the top hundred changing positions new team taking a one year deal as approve it kind of thing for a new contract. Whatever i look at where they were drafting. Their otani was drafted. You know whether it was round ten around fifteen. He was drafted in every league. Okay so was semi-in you know it wasn't centered moen's a baltimore is an absolute possibility for fantasy. Mvp right now because he went undrafted and pretty much every league and this is a guy on pace for twenty five. Twenty five homers deals with batting average. She's an all star. He's putting up incredible numbers. I took a chance on a mattel. I think it was last year. That was a year too early. May what a season. And if you wanna talk about the value of the pick he would be the winner because all these other guys were drafted and he was not yeah. I'm trying to dig this up as quickly as i can. And i've gotten a heck of a lot wrong this year but cedric mullins. I believe was the first player in my first three to add coma the year and i hope he will pick them up because if you did at that point that was the period at which it was known that he was contributing in the role and he has never stopped since that. Point one of the reasons for your case as to fantasy value. Is i think the wise fantasy managers as as you had said you got last year and touting you've got him at the beginning of the year here anybody who got him at the beginning of the year has reap the rewards of three excellent months of performance fascinating and you look closer as numbers and there's no reason to think that's going to stop either so you had it right. First week of the season got to add and took a little while for people to do it. But this is why you when you're leagues. Let's talk about some of the news. "Postseason seems like it has been decided by injuries. But that's been by acute injuries that have been during the postseason right. There's been a record number of all stars to miss a postseason game whatever else. I don't think we're quite in that boat yet in in baseball at. I think it's different if we get to the playoffs and you know there are multiple teams without their stars but at this point i think there are enough guys who are expected to come back at some point. I'm actually thinking of your crosstown rivals with the white sox. You know they may be getting loose. Robert de la jimenez back closer to the postseason or for the postseason. So he think. Until those things don't come to fruition. It's hard to say that it's necessarily deciding it at an. I also just think that you know with one hundred sixty two games. I i do think cream rises to the top especially with that. It's so many games that even if you are without a star you if you're the best team even without that player that will come through. I think And that's a little bit different when you're talking about other sports shorter seasons or whatever else sir as you've been watching baseball then for this again like the pretty much exact halfway point for most teams right now which storylines have stood out to you. So far that you've just really enjoyed watching and following the most. Oh my gosh. I mean the easy. Immediate anther has to be shohei ohtani. They know his starting. Yankee stadium did not go as plan but that doesn't even matter for this conversation. As far as i'm concerned. I mean he had two runs in any way to start the next day. He is absolutely incredible. Is leading the majors in home runs. And it's really cool because you know. I think we all remember when he signed when he came over from japan. And this is what it was potentially would. It could be rightly this was kind of the best case scenario and those don't always actually happen and it took a few years. He was really good as a pitcher in twenty eighteen but he did get injured. He wasn't really able to do both at the same time. He didn't get to hit on days when he pitched than in two thousand nineteen. He didn't pitch at all twenty twenty. He tried it. Didn't quite work. And now he's one of the best offensive players in the majors and also a really good pitcher who had a bad start the other night but a really good pitcher with an amazing amazing pitch with his splitter. And i just love how into it. Everybody is i it when he pitches and when he plays when he homers. He's one of those players where athletes in all sports or commenting on it. They're tweeting about it. And that's just a whole new level and i love to see that for baseball. Yeah i think it's absolutely great for the sport. Great brand just everything in the homerun derby like all of that but do another storyline. That kinda keeps my head is. We're talking that you know you're talking about the star or one of the stars in the league and then i find it interesting storylines this year with the guys that you don't know much about because of injuries were getting called up specifically for us. They know he just got hurt. during the brewers theories that patrick wisdom he's had a huge impact on the cubs and a lot of guys have come up from triple a. they're not the shohei otani but man of have they proven valuable for teams during when they've had injuries definitely and.

"This is my game of the year by a pretty huge margin. At this point. I think it could be unseated by Something that hits in in in a different way Something maybe a little bit more narrative lee satisfying because god knows monster. Hunter rise didn't scratch that it since it didn't have an ending when it came out but it condenses down everything i like about monster hunter and then put it on the switch in a time. Where like that was all. I could really play. I think it came out like a days before gus was born So like there were definitely a couple of nights in the hospital where i just didn't sleep because the baby didn't sleep And it was it it. It's i like monster. Hunter is a lot. I think it's very good. I don't know that there's much else to say about it. No it's good. I know it i. I think it's probably up there for russ also so he would he would. I know he would support this decision. If you've never played a monster hunter is game and people are all the questions always like. That feels like games have to be edifying in some way they can't just be fun. are not uncommon to have like an hour and a half run that just gets undone in fifteen seconds of bad luck And that is absolutely infuriating. At to a point where i was like. I can't play this anymore. i'm not doing it. I'm gonna stand up and walk away. I'm deleting the game from ips.
