Monday Night Football (MM #3904)

"The NASA minute. With Kevin mason. Back in the 1970s, when ABC created Monday Night Football, with Howard Cosell and Don Meredith and Frank Gifford, it was all the rage it was revolutionary. It changed the game of professional football. I talked a couple of months ago where I thought the game of well, not just professional football, but sports broadcasting in general changed thanks to the new mega cast that ran most Mondays on ESPN2. That's Peyton Manning and his brother Eli, basically, while hosting a party, I guess you'd say, with guests popping in and out and kind of talking about the game, we're watching the game, but it's not really the play by play, and I kind of don't know what to do with myself tonight because they're not on. They're not on every game this season. They're not hosting every game, but I found that I watch more Monday Night Football now than I ever have in my entire life. And that includes years where I had to go host Monday Night Football parties when it worked in radio. It's changed the way I watch sports. And again, I've watched more Monday Night Football this year than I have in well forever. I think it's going to change a lot of things. It'd be interesting for me to see NASCAR kind of try the same thing.

"A couple of years. These young kids, but you're right on point with Trevor ziegler. He could win the colder this year even though we both love Spencer night. But, you know, if there's a guy on the ducks that can win the colder, it's definitely that kid. But he's just he's just, he knows all the hype. He knows the hype that's attached to him. He's handling it so well. He's a good-looking kid too. It's just, it's fun. And I'll tell you. He owns the power play now, Emily. You know, it's always been gets off. Now, gets lost out there with him. But it's Trevor seeker who's making everything happen on that point of it. He scored 2008, not him, but the power play that two goals yesterday all Wednesday night two goals. They also went 5 for 5 on the penalty kill. So real good stuff. I'm always that person and that flag let's not overreact to the first time of the season. But my point is sometimes when it's big picture stuff of like, wait, this team we thought was going to be like the most unwatchable is actually exciting. Then I'm ready to talk about it. For example, Chicago last night watched that. Yeah. Marc Andre gets burnt. That's not going to be Mark Andrea. He bounces back from games like that. His defense could not help him. Well, it is fault though where many of those goals has fold Emily. I didn't watch all of them, so I don't want to comment, but I did watch somewhere. I was like, oh, that was a port offensive play. That just like Colorado really good offensive to you. Yeah. And they didn't have Nathan McKinnon or their head coach Jared bednar, of course. But they had, you know, they had guys like nasim contrary, who reminded us, yes, he's still on the team. Just doesn't play in the playoffs because he's always on suspension. But to Winnipeg's credit, they didn't have Mark shyly. Finally, that suspension that was the last game of that suspension on that awful late on Jake, Jake Evans in the postseason, right, Jake Evans, right? From Montreal. It was heavens. And it was God, that feels like forever. Yeah. But he's so valuable to that Winnipeg jet team. I don't think that was the real one. They looked also. They look like the lightning, actually. You know, they look like. They didn't raise any banner. Okay. They just were missing Mark shyly. But they're too good to be boring, kind of hell of up your guy. He's, you know, again, it was like the flurry situation. And it could have had a couple of them. You know, I wasn't great, but gibby kept the ducks in that game. I love him, and he had a fire. He took two penalties, John Gibson. He did. I didn't watch the game. I'll tell you, let me tell you something about John Gibson. I know it's a love fest. I have with him. All right, forgive me. But he is, he, like, an opening night, like the local announce I forgot his name. I think it was Steve. But I forgot his last name. Anyway, he said, he said, if you look at the numbers of John Gibson on opening night, like half of the penalty minutes of his career have come on opening night. So he's always jacked up for that big game in always, not just in making stops, but causing chaos and tummy. So I love it. All right, I'm talked out of opening night. I'm ready for Monday after a full weekend of games. I think I know I just said, I don't like to overreact after one game, but I'm ready to overact after everyone has like two to three games. Yeah, let's get through another week. Some would say let's react after a dozen games, but not us. We will react to what we see on the Monday. Got to produce content every twice a week. Okay, how else are we gonna do it? Exactly. Who isn't pumped up for this? Bold men on campus. A new ESPN podcast. Hosted by Jay villas, lafonta Ellis and Seth Greenberg. These ESP and basketball personalities who happen to be bold. Give you an all access pass inside the world of college basketball talking to the biggest names in the sport. That's bold men on campus. Listen wherever you get your podcasts. And it's well established. You know where I'll be next. I'll be in between the benches. First ESPN+ game, ducks, hosting the wild on Friday and then Saturday, I'm hosting in the crease on ESPN+. Yes, the hockey highlight show in the crease. On ESPN+, what are you up to? I will be on the point again tomorrow. By the way, we have so many of those these days, the drop, the point. The crease podcast. But I'll be on the point. We've got Kali, Ryan Callahan's going to be their torts who I'm just really, I'm pushing so hard to get the invite to his farm one day. I keep asking him about his horses. He's got three. He's got so many dogs. That is my end of season goal. I invite you towards his farm. I know he's not listening because he also told me he does not have social media. He didn't know what a burner Twitter was. I had to explain it to him anyway. Let me tell you, you'll get an invite to the farm quicker than he will want to come on this podcast or any podcast since he doesn't like social media. I'm surprised he knew what a podcast was and we both love towards to death. We can't get enough of them. You have the power Emily. You can convince to it to come on this podcast. That is your homework. And the season goals, okay? Okay. I'm going to get them on the podcast. I did ask him last week, because we're recording right after. And I said, torts, sorry, Christine, you're going to have to bleep in a second. I said torts, everyone's like, what are you doing after this? I'm like, oh, I've got to record the podcast with Linda torch. Do you want to come on with me? And he goes, no. And what do you know? He said that his wife told him not to go on any podcast to see get in trouble. So it's going to be a steep hill to climb, but I'm going to climb it. And then Tuesday got a home game. Chicago Blackhawks home opener against the New York islanders, I'm going to be between the benches for that. So we'll see how that goes. I'm pumped to be at the united center. Honestly, my favorite moment of the united center, one of my favorite moments in pre games of hockey is the national anthem there, some curious for what the perspective and it's going to be like between the benches and that vantage point. So I'm looking forward to that. On Monday, when the next episode of our podcast will hit, I will tell you a story that involved me at the united center. It is also one of my top ten hockey moments of all wait leave the people hang in Linda. Well, that's called the T's Emily..

"first game" Discussed on ESPN On Ice with Wyshynski and Kaplan Show

"What a veteran move. Well, thank you. What I'm really looking forward to with the Anaheim game, Minnesota wilder in town, I am actually going to I have actually been learning some key phrases in Russian. Because I am going to be speaking to after the morning skate with a great with the most dynamic player in the history of the summer wild and I'm talking about career caprice off. The newly, it's not wild he's been on the scene for one year and he's already the most dynamic player, but I totally agree with you. And, you know, I'm told by the PR folks. Oh Linda. I don't know if you should do that. He doesn't really speak English. I'm like, I've heard through a source. He knows some English. And he would know more, by the way, if it wasn't for what he had to deal with last year and I'm talking about COVID. I don't have to tell you Emily. You know, because you have spoken to so many players that are have been born outside of North America. And what is the key to learning English? The key to learning English is to be around people who speak English, right? And so many guys tell me. You'd go to the grocery store and then force himself to order things at the deli or things like that and just interact with people. And last year, what were NHL players prevented from doing? Interacting with anyone? Correct, Emily. And so it's truly amazing caprice self knows as many words he does in English because of that. He didn't have that opportunity. Plus, here's a fun fact, which wasn't too much fun for Capri soft. And again, for those who don't know, all this guy did was when the colder, all this guy did was come into the NHL day one scored a goal and then didn't stop scoring goals and was the best player on this team, okay? Just keep that in mind with all the other stuff going on off the ice. But here's the fun fact. He had no teammate that could speak Russian with him, because he was the only Russian on the team. He was the only absolutely positively when you look around the NHL now. You see at least more than one Russian player on NHL team. Just, you know, just name a team, I mean look at you on the reindeers and you have like Kris kreider who randomly speaks Russia. Well, he's smart because I know that was a good move by him. If he wants to communicate with our Tammy Panera and others. But, yeah, so he had those two items against him. But I'm going to be talking with him really comes up about that. And I want yeah. I think that's so smart that you said you learned some Russian phrase. It's not a lot for sleep. Okay, what I was told, someone gave me this tip way back when and I said this to all young journalists is if there is a guy that English is not his first language, learn how to say, hey, hello, and thank you in that language. It's the bare minimum that you can do and it goes such a long way. So I'm sure you know, prevent and placebos. I also know, let me. See you soon. Okay. Instead of saying, we'll see you soon. It's like another way of saying until we see each other again. And it was the simplest thing. It sounds like I'm doing a bird call, but I'm gonna I have to look up your brilliant because I forgot to look up thank you. So do you know it off the table? Placebo. Say it again? Placebo. Placebo. Can I write this down? Yes. Placebo. Yeah, you're right. Rhymes with pussy bow, but it's yeah. That's the best way to think of it. Okay. Placebo. So you both placebo. Placebo. All right, I've got to find that. You're going to have to ask them. But if you say, he'll laugh and he'll smile until I can make him life. His wife is a good thing. Yeah, so anyway, that's fun. Yeah. That'll be good. Anyway, moi and ketose. That's in finish. All right, don't confuse me with these other. Once we get to that point when I'm covering someone and there's enough fins in the league where that will be to finish. I'll talk to do you know Swiss because I'm going to also talk to Kevin fiala? No, but I think he's peace. I don't know what he speaks. Yes. He speaks very good. That's what I thought. I had a look it up, and I'm like, I forgot he's Swiss. He's like, well, I see. You know what I mean? Negotiation. They're honestly the Swiss hockey team might not be bad this year. I know in the Olympics. Yeah. So, all I know about, you know, getting back to Capri soft who I just adore. It's like that hello anybody, you know, at the Olympics, he just scored the game winning goal for Russia. The gold medal game. That's all. Everything he touches is gold. And he's going to be back there again. And once again, you got to think Russia, but we can give it to our Olympic talk at another time. But it's very exciting to think about that team and how good they are. Honestly, that's an exciting game. I think sometimes you look at the Anaheim ducks and you don't get excited, but like you said, the fact that all of these young kids are in the lineup and showing some energy, it's going to be good in zig versus the kid that everyone says, if I were you, Linda, I would lean in and ask a bunch of questions to people beforehand about Zeke risk, 'cause I've heard he's got a beauty of a personality, just like I saw a kid is unreal. You'd be proud of me. I watched every minute of the game, the duck's local broadcast. On ESPN+, because hello, I'm a subscriber. Only way to get out of my games. That's right. So there I was watching the pre, the post, the game, and he does have a great personality and the kid that had a goal and assist me in the cavic was fun. They did not plan on being on the roster this year. That was not an edit. He didn't even know he was going to be in the game yesterday until max Jones was sick. He found out a four o'clock local time. And what does he do? Physical illnesses and also played havoc in front of the net. It's just so refreshing. The ducks were actually watchable. And with no disrespect to the docks and all that, but again, at times it's been a snooze fest..

"What is the issue? How is that a goal? He definitely moved his blade to redirect it when I came from the NFL. I said this to myself at the time, and I'm going to say it now because four and a half years later, it's still true. Catch or no catch of the NFL, our version of it in hockey is distinct kicking motion, where no one knows what it actually is. And I think that the rule book is just way too vague of what is a distinct kicking motion. And so it's up for interpretation. And we are watching it all in the lobby after the game. And we're with everyone, right? League execs, all these ESPN people we had so many say, that's interesting. I want to know what they say. It was 50 50. Half the people were like, that's the goal and have to be like, that's not a goal. And I'm like, this is a problem. If you have half these people being split right now, and no one knows what the real answer is. So I think that's something that the NHL should revisit. They should just visit. I don't know if they've ever revisited to begin with, because it's an issue and it's going to continue being an issue because it's just too much gray area. It was a tough way to lose to Seattle so much good to cut take from their first ever regular season game. And you know, coming back from the three nothing deficit. But to lose like that, that's just not fair. You know, that's just not right. And that part of it was unfortunate. But if you look at the whole experience, the whole vagus experience, definitely put it on your bucket list or anyone who's never been to a hockey game at T mobile arena. And you will not be disappointed. And I know you've heard it before. You're going to hear it again. But, you know, when so many people are talking about something that you should go to and put on your bucket list, you should do it, especially if you're a hockey fan. And I'm assuming you are because you're listening to Emily and I or maybe you just like Emily and I like hearing our voices. And we've been so busy. So yeah, so Emily, you know I'm doing this Friday in between the benches and you'll get the full report on Monday. How it is. But you can watch it. That's our first ever ESPN+ game, by the way. A lot of first Emily and this will be our first of many 70 something ESPN+ games that's so easy. And if you haven't subscribed, what are you waiting for? It's so cheap. It's like 7 cents a game. For goodness. I don't wait. Don't be that person on the first day of NFL Sunday. That's on the phone with Sunday ticket being with what is it? I know, wake up. I know. The first cracking game is gonna be on ESPN+. You can't watch it anywhere else except for ESPN+. The first problem correcting game rather at climate led arena. Right, which will be we'll both be at. I know. I must have known this, but I must have just had brain fart because my life is I don't even know what my life is. I forgot that you were going to be there. I forgot that we're going to be in the same place. Live podcast, people. It's amazing. And I used to live in Seattle and I love Seattle has changed, though, when I looked there from 89 to 92, back in the day, you were born. I know when you were born, you know, because you're the same age as well. Okay. I'll say it as a hockey player. I'm a 91. You're a 91. Okay, I love that how you set that as a hockey player. That's great. So, yes. So that's when I was in Seattle. And my daughter who's the same age as you Emily was born in Seattle. So I hold a special place in my heart for Seattle and the kraken. And I'm pumped up we're pumped up climate pledge arena. Can you tell me again, I mean, what is this about? I mean, I'm not shaking my head. I just think it's fascinating. Part of the stuff I learned about the climate and our environment. And what? No plastic. What's going on there? What is the deal? What are we going to see there? Firstly, it's going to be cool. So I went there, I was in Seattle, like a week and a half ago doing a big project on the arena. And I went and they let me in. It was not ready. There's a reason that they didn't play on home on opening night. They're going up to the wire. The ice look good. The two there's there's two jumbotrons on either side, not just one in the middle for better sightlines. And I think that's really unique. But the concourse that looked like they were putting in the stands there. So it will be ready for opening night, but they definitely are working up to it. It's going to be the most sustainable arena in the world. It's the greenest arena in the world. The first certified net carbon zero, I'm totally butchering this and their PR person made me repeat it like 5 times before I had to say like a new language. I never heard of this. It is. So the zero plastics thing, I believe it's by 2024, they're going to be zero plastics. And Tim lei wiki in oakview group who develops all of these arenas has been highly involved. Was inspired by Billy Eilish because it her concerts. She requested zero plastics. And he's like, well, the pop star can do this. Why don't we do this at all of our buildings and let's do it at our new buildings. So I think that's really neat because this is a franchise that has said, we're going to do things differently, and we're going to be a franchise that stands for something and they're walking the walk. And you know, we know that it's actually Amazon is the sponsor of this arena, but Amazon, but their name on it, they named it climate pledge arena, and I know some people think that's so corny, but at least they're back in it. I've heard worse names for arenas. I can. What's the worst arena? I was going to say I can't think of it now. I mean, nothing could be more worse than the names of college football bowl games. Let's put it that way. Oh, yeah. But that's what comes to mind even worse than certain arena names, because usually they're just sponsors. Obviously. So I'm not going to rip anyone just in case they want to sponsor this podcast. So I will not go in that direction. Emily camplin. But I tried to beat you. Right now, it didn't work. It did not work. I wanted people to be mad at you. I was like, let's give them some fire. Let's not work. I'll tell you something..

"Was a lot of space so I was moving around, and especially when the play does come to you, you should step back a bit just in case, you know, something gets deflected or stick comes up right. The only time I ever got dangerous with crystal tank was trying to be so dramatic about not having too many men on the ice that he came and leaned over on the bench and his blade was literally like his leg was lying across the boards in front of me. And the blade was pretty close to me. And I kind of had to step back there. Be careful on the ground though, can I tell you what's on the ground in the box? No one talks about this. Please do a bunch of use sniffing salt packets that the guys just toss over into my box. That's great. And some gum. That's great. So all good for COVID, you know? Oh, yeah, exactly. Also, this is the story I've always wanted to do, Linda. Why do hockey players baseball players too? To the most disgusting gum. You guys, I understand you're like what's the flavor? Like double bubble and what's the other one? The kind that's 5 cents at the store and it loses all of its flavor. Every time you go into a hockey locker room, you say, is it bazooka? Bazooka. That was like a penny back in my day. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Speaking of Chrysler Tang, do you ever watch this is us? I think he's a spit and double for Milo, whatever. Jack yeah. Which is a good thing. Oh, by the way. May I just say. But every time I see crystal tank, I'm like, wow. He could be an actor. Yes, that's how I look at it. Let's keep it clean. Let's get back to what you wore. I want to know what you were. So you said layers. So did you have the I forgot what your hand did you have, but what was under the jacket, you have a sir? You did have a turtleneck. So here you are in Tampa. And you didn't feel odd because I am now thinking, I got to dig out some turtlenecks here and, you know, LA where I'm coming, you know, and I'll be an ani. Great point. So you had the turtleneck under the blazer. In case I had to take it off, I think I could have just won the turtleneck on air. Yeah, I love it. Yeah. All right. I wore booth for really comfortable boots. Yeah. We'll get back to the podcast in just a minute. But first, does this sound familiar? You've got one device that lets you catch the game live. Another that lets you stream your favorite shows, you're watching sports highlights on your phone..

"And Linda, what a week it was, we kicked off the NHL season. We were both at an NHL opener. I was at the early game. You were at the late game. We had a chance to get on the phone and dissect a little bit, but we didn't get into all of it. So we saved it for the podcast. You're welcome people. Yeah, I mean, it was great. Now I'm like going through withdrawal because every night I want to be at a hockey game. I know. Is that wrong? No, it's one of those things where I was done and I was itching, and I was like, okay, can I do this tomorrow? Okay, when especially between the benches, it was just so cool to be in that action and that atmosphere. I unfortunately was at the lightning game. It just didn't have the same atmosphere as your game. So I'm a little jealous that Vegas was the better show. Let's face it, it was a dud. And I was totally shocked by that quality of play in that game. But no, nothing against the penguins. They came to play at least one team did. But I get all that, but wait a minute. Between the benches, okay? You are outstanding. Although I was in Vegas and the sound was down, but you look great. And I know you were saying something significant because you're Emily Kaplan and you always do. And you leave that little something for the viewers to just ponder. But I want to know what it was like. I mean, I know you're rehearsed and everything you told me, hey, Linda, I got the rehearsal Tampa blah, blah, blah, blah. You know, I never I never got that. I'm going to be between the bench as my first ever go round in Anaheim at the Honda center at the pond, Friday night. And I'm pumped up, but I've got to tell you, I got a little butterfly. So I need to be prepared. And you know, that's how you kick bought. That's how you crush it when you are prepared. So Emily, can you please tell me right now? How can I best prepare myself? I'm not talking about taking notes and no one the players and knowing the number. No, I'm talking about how do I stay upright. How do I not get hit by a puck? I know I was a goalie, but I don't have the equipment on. Well, it's so funny because after the game, we went to the hotel bar, lobby and I was talking to folks with the NHL, and there's this woman to call Buckley and she's in charge of broadcasting. She's like, the ref's all came up to me before the game, and they said, who's that between the benches? We're really worried about her. We don't want her to get hit by a puck. Who is that? I was like, oh, she's fine. That's Emily Kaplan and they were like, and I could tell during the game, the rest were giving me a look of like, huh? So, keep your head on a swivel. Follow the action of the puck, but come on Linda. It's all instincts, you're a goalie. You're reactive. You're going to be fine at it. I think the coolest things about it are that the small moment is that you notice, like, for example, in the lightnings, banner, ceremony. We watched that on air. And then, you know, after we go to commercial break, I see all the veteran guys Victor headman, Mikhail surgeon, pat maroon. Another guy did it to. Maybe it was kuchar. Went over and skated to the Stanley Cup and just tapped it and I just thought that was a really unique moment. And then when you're there, you get to see things and like, for example, I didn't get to talk about this on air, but the ref on our game with Steve kosari, and he was getting so mad at the Pittsburgh bench, specifically the coaching staff of Mike Sullivan because they kept trying to make line changes when they weren't supposed to. And Steve is like, gotta help me out here. You gotta help me out and he was getting really angry of it. You get to see every player that skates to the ref complaining about something. Start practicing your lip readings because it's really hard to hear. But you can hear some stuff and the one thing I did report on air, which was funny, Corey Perry got knocked into the net and it comes back and he skates over, and he's really upset. And I'm sitting between the benches and Brian Ross is like leaning over yelling and he's like, hey, Corey, are you okay? And he doesn't respond. And he's like, how are you? It wasn't me and Cory just give him the death glare. And so those type of interactions you're going to love. Yeah, that's the thing though. I love that that you were able to report on that. But what I'm concerned about, so I'm going to be so head on a swivel, right? I'm going to be looking at both benches, you know, when I probably should be paying attention to what's going on on the ice. You know? And so I'm really, you know, they say repetition is the key. No, I just want again, stay healthy, stay safe in that first go around in Anaheim tomorrow. I'm really pumped up. But I'm going to be anxious to kind of capture who was it that said, I don't know, maybe I'll give you credit Emily. The key to being a good between the bench reporter and NHL hockey game is be like a nosy neighbor. Was that you who said that? No. No, it wasn't, but I like that. Literally what it is. Right. So that really resonated with me. B and nosy neighbor, like poke your nose where it doesn't belong. And I know we're going to have the two big and you had it and you experienced it. Big plexiglass on each side, which can block out a lot. But you can still see. And so that's what I'm going to try to do. But I'm really looking forward to it's fun, but I was like, oh, and here's the other thing. And I know just because we're two women, I want to bring this up. It doesn't mean you're women, you're talking about clothes when you're wearing. No, that's not why I bring this up. I'm talking about I want to freeze my butt off in between the benches. I want to make sure I'm wearing the proper fire. You know, I learned now finally after I, you know, I've learned never to wear boots or shoes again to a rink. To one, my feet freeze two, they hurt after like an hour. So no more, I wear comfortable sneakers, but my second part of this question, what the heck do I wear? How do I keep warm? Is it cold there in between the benches? The people want to know. It's not just me. It's a little, it can get chilly. You know, I mean, I was in Tampa where they have to pump the air and you know, probably in Anaheim, they do too. We're layers drink a lot of tea between periods, find someone who could bring you tea or coffee. That's another huge tip. But you're not gonna have to go to the bathroom all the time. I can not drink too much coffee and tea. Not an issue. Yeah, we can talk about bladder control as well if that's what we want. TMI, I know. I also like one thing. I was just in my friend's wedding and the wedding planner. My best friend's wedding. Yes. My best friend's wedding. It was. They're my two best friends, and they got married. It was my best friend's wedding, didn't make any packs with anyone to get married at 40 or 30 whatever the actual pack was. But the wedding planner came up to us and was like, make sure you guys are kind of moving around because a lot of people lock their knees and faint. And I actually thought about that between the benches, a to stay warm, but be just to make sure nothing kind of funky happened. Luckily in Tampa, there was a lot of space so I was moving around, and especially when the play does come to you, you should step back a bit just in case, you know, something gets deflected or stick comes up right..

"That's right so let's get into some of the best that were made throughout the season and after the preseason and once we made the board bats we put them on twitter to see who are which side you believed was correct august six. We had aboard. Bet this for between all of them except for one of these was made between matthew and i and it was copiously or mile sanders score more fantasy points this year. Who do you. who would you pick your mile. excuse me emmanuel sanders call beasley for sure have used to find you. I'm picking emmanuel sanders with my heart. Wow to emmanuel sanders. Both because i thought it was obvious and masses actually believe that matthew and stefan you're correct well fifty one point four percent of you think that emmanuel sanders outscore corby Beasley who had an amazing year last year close with thousand receiving and beasley pretty much across the board drafted before sanders. Even after he fell a few rounds after some of his off season commentary will leave it at that you felt a little bit and draft is still was going at a sanders. I'm kind of surprised that The poll linda. Some i think honestly that By sense is that there's legit concern about someone like in beasley situation potentially missing time in that. That's tiebreaker doing art. Let's get to august nineteenth. We asked the question who will score more fantasy points. Mark andrews or tj hopkinson slash daniel. Dopp who would you pick. Mike mark andrews one of the whole home just pick him sort of guys all draft cheese and he's just a really good player always gets it done just kind monster contract extension per year part about high scoring offense. I love hopkinson. I think he's in for a huge year. but you know we've already seen it for majors. He's already been a certified top five fantasy tight end. Why not do it again. How about used to find my my my head would say mark andrews as especially because as far as pass catchers go baltimore. They've had trouble getting them out all on the field because of health issues. So you know. Mark andrews to me is like the most reliable outlet at this point for the mark jackson. However i just drafted. Tj hopkinson the war in league last night. So i i hope that tj hodkinson wins out okay. The answer is mark andrews. As far as i'm concerned twitter also thinks tj hopkinson so fifty. Five point two percent of you on the side of matthew august twentieth. We asked this question who scores more points. Josh jacobs or darrell henderson. Josh shake shake close jacobs especially with sony michelle joining. I'll go jacob and by the way this was after the trade for sony michelle michelle. I had josh jacobs as well. Matthew had daryl henderson josh shakes get sixty two percent of the vote. That was our most decisive up. Second most decisive vote in the preseason. On august thirtieth. We asked the same player. Josh jacobs or gus edwards. Who would you take. Mike jacobs edwards so underrated. Now it's ridiculous can use respected. Yeah he absolutely is. He still super young and talented and still be going to still be their top rusher. I mean edwards. He might get two hundred. Eighty carries and twelve targets to literally and jacobs isn't going to get a ton of targets. But you know get a ton of targets. He had like twice as many catches last year. Down receiving year has entire career catches his whole career. Mike eighteen yeah. I'm with you on the josh jacobs thing. All right by the way. This one though pretty clear according to twitter gus edwards at sixty point one percent of the votes. This is the one board bet. That's defiant. i made robert tanya catching six and a half or more touchdown passes ice at unders to find us at over mike. I know where you're going this one because you mentioned yesterday. Yeah rate at six. So i'm a little on the under and honestly i'm surprised. Twitter isn't like eighty percent over because compared to what he did last year. Six and a half. I mean people are getting smarter out there. Yeah you gotta go to regress to the mean based his fifty one point. We have had to wait all podcasts. For that disappointed that it took till the end to get it. But i'm so glad we got it in fifty one point. Nine percent took the over on twitter. I had the under as well. Their last one came on september third. Who scores more fantasy points. This season. david montgomery de'andre swift. We got here mike. You know what. If a couple months ago i would have said swift for sure but a lot of chains with rico and injured and now at the andrea swift not at one hundred percent fact he may be very limited here in week one. We don't be surprised if we see a lot of jamal. Williams getting fifteen seventeen touches and swift. Maybe ten eleven. i agree. Don't be surprised at all. So i have to go with montgomery just based on the current situation. Yeah i was just going to say. I think the andrea swift is sort of a wait and see. We didn't really see him at all in the preseason out with a groin injury for most of that time and dan campbell making some comments. That would suggest that they didn't really believe andrea swift was good enough football shape to be able to handle a full workload and not that he was going to handle a full workload but really questioning him out the volume of work he could do especially in week one so i expect him to play. He was a full participant yesterday for the record. But i just don't know it might be a feel thing. Like how does he look does. He looks like he's getting tired as they have to. Rotate out more frequently. I think this week is a tough call. Andy andrea swift. I'm with you. I loved the andrea swift. I think the lions offensive line as a chance to be good this year. They're not just automatically good but they have a chance. But i would take for me and something that i've i've said this for a long time. I grew up with this but with david montgomery. I just think the cream rises with that since you literally didn't have a beard when you i grew up amid west kid so obviously you know with a lot of a lot of milk and cow's cream rises is something that makes sense for you know where i grew up running after usa. I'm going to steal from me. So montgomery takes sixty eight point six percent of the votes by the way in this. How long till the davis merge align talk you know i like him staying in the in the southeast atlanta. I liked that one. Dan campbell makes too much sense to me questions about the andreas with maybe after week. One.

"Nothing wrong with that right now. I think that's the most important point here and the draft part. But i think ninety nine point five percent of drafts probably already done by now with a couple of cliffhangers tonight before the game begins at eight o'clock and some people do draft after the thursday night game. It's viable. It's allowed in our espn system but have justin jackson on your mind as you think about the back end of your roster drafted austin. Maybe you have a piece of the end of your roster. You took us up in more than a late round. Flyer second quarterback tight end might be worth right away acting on grabbing just jackson. If you already have austin actor so find part of the reason why an actor was concerning to me was that all he did deal the hamstring injury. Last year didn't get the sense. It was gonna be something had to manage this year but one thing i have learned over the first two seasons of. Aj brown's career is spice factories. Very young he manages his body in the titan to this day. Do a very good job of this. Is that what happened with him. In the first participate practice participation report. This week i think it is again wednesday practice. We don't know exactly because we need to see what happens. Thursday and friday but he referenced it all of last year jake brown was dealing with a knee injury after. He had a bone bruise that he suffered early in the season. Titans were very very good about managing his workload giving him a day off during the week and he missed a couple of weeks but he ended up playing the rest of the season and then had arthroscopic surgery. Not on just the knee. That had the bone bruise but on his other knee as well. So arthroscopic surgery. Isn't nothing tells you there was something going on in his knees and they're probably just being mindful about the fact that he has had prior knee conditions and this is where teams really start to look at volume of work. How much work are they doing in a week. You know they have this week leading up to the games and it's an eighteen week season this year. I'm just not going to be surprised. If teams are using a lot of these days off for veterans to manage conditions that could potentially be chronic again watched the thursday and friday practice reports. Because we want to make sure this isn't a blow up. That's going to cost him some time. But i don't have any reason at this moment to believe that it is so for those that are just joining us for the first season. Your first of all. We're glad to have any new listeners. That might be aboard. Second of all friday is often the not the last ditch effort on injuries because he should watch fantasy football now on sunday mornings. Espn two or we started an espn news when we follow f. One which will be the case this week. The f. one season still continuing..

"Still flag added that the english clubs though six clubs decided to join the super league because they essentially have their own superleague. It's called the premier league and like what these clubs really want to do is join the premier league and and it's like they're now pulling their literally willing to cut leno's off despite the face and and just football is getting closer to be mass even more distorted even more distorted than it than it could. You could ever imagine. yeah anyway. That was a a careful one. We don't after dwell any any further moment. So hopefully you got. We're we're looking very poignant Do you wanna throw something less than yeah only because i do think about it is the heir of the promise. Land the premier league is still gives you the moments like thomas. Frank celebrating with the fans on friday night and the way brentford got that massive resort and i think the climbing of the football pyramid kind of marrying up. He was talking about. What kind of community of a club. Then becoming part of this promised land. That's still really magical thing. So we all love. The premier league is what is wants to capitalists. Is that what you're saying. Maybe now get human again. All right let me throw it over to you. We'll what's your question to us. Hopefully it's a question is. I am ridiculously excited to see romilly. Cocky combat to the premier league despite two calls quotes about him being chelsea needing a back to about to the go strike. So where does the cocky play in this chelsea team. What position does he play on. Who is he playing in attack with going teddy. He plays up front weights tonight. Same play with peggie play with inter who is to most of the mon- latinos and is two different to talk to about last thing. I'm actually going to about well. How he's gonna play. It would be..

"You if we think about if we think of yeah yeah and all the things that that would would not come. You know the the super league You know where we're at this with with parsons human chelsea manning city and and money and huge people that don't care about football clubs hovering fast poos of well at is a think who go back it probably is at its inception the premier league that that kickstart this so that's question i think there's an inevitability of the business of football nothing if this doesn't happen then then maybe it's another league maybe it's what was division one time becomes monetize and a product of sport washing and inflated wages and everything no matter what i think that probably happens the primarily accelerated things and was lovely shawny bad to attach to all to Catch the sun and wave into roman abramovich is is just to get his attention and make sure that that kind of purchase happens and shake monsiri excetera. But i think those those things happen at some stage football because of the global popularity and we're talking about now a world cup every two years with see in qatar world cup. Witches sensually were massive sports washing project in itself tied into psg messy. All of it. I think is definitely accelerates premier league but happened with or without it probably of the night raising i on this great answer tabby would your thoughts for you know nothing other than the primarily. Do you might. I completely nothing to comparing and all i can say is well. Maybe all i can say is that i i. I've seen the permanent and see what happened in the last probably year especially with the super league gesture two cups and things of this A step beyond. I think most full funds ever wanted to see and the permanently probably the limit of worse of money and football and near the business wanted to go All prefer watching. I find that the solve the passion and this thing from the lower leagues and being a f- croly fan a lot more fun than sort of no because of how they play but because of what it's like they're solved by up the smaller coach in the close to solve. It is more enjoyable and kind of cause that must have been lost. Crowd in present of premier league in in much noise and gentrified kind of football. I think perhaps what was born out of aids. is is well That is not teasing but it the divide is so great at the moment and and this is why am i.

"And we don't see them for a while and so on and so forth but but less Less less out The fondue thing. I was going to say sorry will before you spoke earlier. It was i think the quality of other teams in the premier league is increasing. You look at brentford of commitment. Are the small norwich are smart. Like they've got a plan and am not sure what upon his awesome in. Maybe maybe it's not relegation but Maybe it's than maybe their plan isn't relegation. Okay let's not get relegated. This season okay can say that produces like franchi turns out. They can make more money from a relegation than title. That would be the amazon prime series. The amazing yeah all right. Well if i finish with the with with moines And and well kind of come in with is that it's only one game butts mason greeted. Start ahead of marcus. Rush would collision they. Well i'll just look the other debt watching yet. I thought if if you swapped on james for sancho than i would like to see all those parts work together because what chin it was greenwood he breaks with the board does need to set up a polka and he puts the ball through. Somebody's likes lock as he's running through unpopular just slides there for it. It's way mrs star does a step wave at any slums against saw him on. I was like why that was like that's really skilled as just. That was a beautiful natural. Skillful i just and i thought we had a really really effective really confident game in sense that if he didn't know office i if he didn't know he mason greenwood was and you just watched that game you just think while he's held player but co east. He's really really good. It wouldn't be. Oh yeah he's just come into it and then he sat up and down and and obviously that a guest that the council will be you know. There's ricksen his game still that needs to be worked out but unlike the flow of that team a an intuition to movement that i'm not quite sure if rochford mrs sometimes i think calling on tidy football but about how socialize obsession with a front three is that.

"But yes i think. That's one of the reasons he had stay in a think benitez would finish. Finish higher with with appleton. I just wanted to. you know. Have a premier league stunt love eleven players. They're probably the good enough to play the premier league whereas all stalin the night. You know there's a few names that i'll be surprised. Awesome funds of harlem and the rest of the slight just ammo. Smith wrote care antennae sacco. They look good enough to burn the prime. The russell reward the sock. I did say okay. Now you're talking about often players. Like someone like thomas party or benway or even but leonard had a really bad game as potentially not being good enough to play in the primarily. What changes things that happen at sea and and what we have to ask ourselves and tom's parties maxim player but has he as he had continued like an unannounced is injured. But these weird things happened at also with these as a. I don't really understand but you can't. You can't say wholeheartedly. That tom's party has had an excellent time or very good time. Performance was awesome for multitude. No definitely but you look at the plan. That was a athletes gay And katie like most of the top six clubs make that deal with another. Taurus supplied the wolves at chelsea the play. The not white community was pool when chelsea then he wasn't like he was a special she on a platform the cubs calling in the club and bringing us a prayer and they can be average once best. Environ- did it to clubs. But he's still he is playing like thomas party. He's a premier league player. My i'm not saying that he's going to set the world alight and come back and be the best player in the world. Burt primarily probably and watch almost had already want. I'm just saying. I think there are the teams that are in trouble. And i think the spurs fan is got goading. Nano finger is out isn't it. What do you think is is that.

"At their best. The blessed their best are better than the sunday there. The sons haven't had saric. So but i mean the books also haven't had dante even though you might not even be starting right now. Who knows well. I mean he. He should be because they changed the way they played. He gave them more perimeter. They've been off-balance in these playoffs. Starting against the nets. Because they were too reliant on biggs and and that was kind of why jaanus playing more out top. That was where they played last year. No by the way i going in. I chose stephen chen zone as like the player to watch that. No one's talking about or some topic like that. I take because he could have been a difference maker but you know he's been hurt. Yeah i mean he's been hurt and when he went out they brought him. Pj tucker who used to play center for the rockets and he's a creator and so that pushed the ball back into his hands to create more. When as we've seen there better when their perimeter players are creating and even the dunker spot or or coming up and setting the pick and roll into the real. So i i you know i do agree. This sars being out is noticeable. But i don't think there's any bit. I think they've been that really big playoffs. I'm talking to smelling yes. The nba senior writer. You're on the max kellerman show. Espn radio now. Jaanus has showed up. Ev shown up every game and as much as analytics types of coaches may bristle at the idea that like well he can simply impose his will know. There are different reasons for that. It's the strategy of the coaches. It's the positioning of the players. That are they building a wall. Or not as you said. Is the initiating offense every time. It is the dunker spot. What's going on. But i think if a guy shows up in like a dozen consecutive playoff games and does what jaanus is doing that you must credit the player for imposing as well particularly interior player. He's tipping. it's strong away. Honest is doing. He's really doing something. And it's impossible to ignore the fact that middleton has also stepped up in crucial situations as has holiday especially on the defensive end when you flip it around to the sons. The guys the reason i favored phoenix. They had home court but also they have this dynamic back court of guys who can make good decisions with the ball and hit clutch shots and seemed to work well together in. Cpi three and booker but dray cpa. Three has clearly not been himself and mentioned hammer stroke stat. Twenty four field goal attempts in the fourth quarter. These finals zero assists is this. What do you see from especially phoenix as back court. And how do they turn this around. Yes so there was a lot in what you just ask Rapid fire going through Yes jaanus is always there. And that's what makes him a megastar We talked into The last time. I was on here about how chris middleton can be a star sometimes and then he's not there other times through holidays a great defender all the time but his offense sometimes. It's not there other times. Well we haven't talked about is. The same is true of the son like chris. Paul at this stage of his career and devon booker are both great players but they're great players. They're not mvp's they're not. You know always going to be at that max level and the fact that a level. No oakland The fact that that john is able to do that in stay there consistently throughout the playoffs is part of the reason why he such you know such an elite player and and he's the best player in this series for that rea. He's a five star player. Chris paul's a four and a half star player that's how it is he's perennial. Mvp candidate. chris paul's once in a while. Mvp candidate And you can you mentioned imposing will and while you're talking about it you mentioned the wall and i think that's really important this year jaanus and the bucks have been able to work around the wall it can be because he's gotten better at it. You know He he learned from the past. It can be because they brought in through holiday and khris middleton and they're able to work around it but that wall is part and parcel of why janas is always putting a monster impact on the game even when they were losing these last two seasons. The opposing team is putting three and four players ended that wall so if he had deficient support they could take advantage of it in a plan to take advantage of it. They should be winning those games even if his own numbers. Don't look so brilliant. Well middleton was there for the wall when it against the honest and brogden was there all the braga was brogden hurting those plus but the point is they. He had guys with him. Then i think the difference this year dre is that putin holes or spent part of the regular season putting the ball and drew holidays hands not having honest initiate all the time and losing some of those games so that they would be ready for this and to give them credit. They appear ready. Yeah there's huge. And he was able to do that because he saw how things that happened in the past and the the the wall was different those two years right the raptors when brock was there. That was the first time. I think that the bus had seen that. And the raptors had like a defensive gold mine in the court it was just really worked out well size talent everything. Yeah yeah you know The heat were able to replicate that in part because brockton was gone and blitzer wasn't able to do enough. And that's why when you were arguing about this back in november. I was saying there drew holiday was the key piece. I wrote that before when when was on the pelicans on espn. I wrote an article that said if the bucks trade for drew holiday he could be the piece that puts him over the top. Because he's able to help on the perimeter the way that we're seeing and so with him middleton together especially one or the other is typically able to do enough to eat pressure when they build that wall. And we're seeing the results. But the fact that i hear you and hate being the guy to rain on everyone's parade. They don't sniff the finals. The net stay healthy like even with all the even with katie by himself. He had a decent look from three to send them packing in overtime of game. Seven by himself like you know if that's where healthy this a five game series at best to five games and that's we're totally healthy at best a five game. There's same thing with the son. If the lakers clippers are just have their star players get smoked like didn't never they they would have got knocked out in the first round and then get knocked out again in the conference finals. Had the other teams simply been healthy. So yes you're right. Like middleton and drew holiday can put them over the top in a funky injury year. they can do it. But that's why. I wanted to focus on the sons okay. Because i know what you're counter is you've made it very well in the past. Look injuries part of the game. Kyrie's frequently not available harden fat and out of shape. This what happens at this point. What about the sons back court before you get outta here. What do c. p. Three and devon booker has to change because they got to change something in order to get a game six win on the road. Yeah you pointed out seeping three. These last games hasn't looked right. You know there have been rumors about his health The last game. He was really struggling but he had a big finish and ended up with twenty and ten. He has to be what he was in that you know in that late rush for an entire game. He has to really be what he was at. The end of the last series in game one The the maestro. He has to be the one. That's controlling the action point out. The you know for as great as as devon is. He's not a creator especially in crunch time. They need c. P. three for that And they have to maintain consistency like each of the last two games. They've had periods where they looked to be in control and then they just kind of went away in the bucks. Were able to your teeth grinding. And come back. Yeah the sons have to be at their best and maintain it Throughout the whole forty eight minutes in order for them to have the chance to send this back to devon booker mini mamba..

"Goal attempts devon booker has in the fourth quarter of this series so far twenty four how many assists in the fourth quarter of this series of four zero. So it's predictable. He's going to get the ball and try and play. Hero ball specially with chris paul not one hundred percent and as a result of that you know. They played team defense and then drew holidays there to strip him because he's predictable. Well okay if you want to say. The momentum is on that it all starts with chris. Paul not physically being right or being having lingering effects of covert are being Emotionally exhausted whatever it is then you have a point but if it's simply that well i saw the bucks gut to out and that really gutted the sons now the sun's there's bucks have the momentum. What does that mean. In the moment of truth the sons are just going to hang their heads off sharks. We can't hit this three because they got the momentum. We're not supposed to win now. That's just what people say because it's a very hard series to predict and the last two games have come right down to the wire and required superhuman all time. Great by the bucks to win them by a possession. The bucks are one game from being nba champs though. It became the fourth team in finals. History go down two. Oh two and then win the next three as the first since the. Oh six miami heat. Now here's the question about chris paul and on espn plus you see his regular season versus postseason numbers and until this series like. Let's face it against denver. Chris paul played the best basketball of his career of first ballot hall of fame career. He's amazing against denver and then after missing those games in covert protocol to you know in the western conference finals against the clippers and then coming back and kind of not playing that well when it mattered most in game six one of the greatest games of all time to put them in the finals so his play here in the final comes not right. It's it's physically. He doesn't look right and mentally. He doesn't look right. And what's on the line for chris paul right now. I can't overstate this member. I said if chris paul had lost game six in the conference finals i spent time on the show talking about this and then he lost in game seven that would heavily count against his legacy just as the fact that he played so well in game six elevated his legacy. This is a zero-sum game. Sports is the thrill of victory the agony of defeat. This is not a rom com or a soap opera all conflict resolves in a relationship where everyone wins. Sports programming is winners and losers. Well you can't boil down whole legacy to one moment that's true you can't. He is a great player and a future hall of famer and that's undeniable but whether he's ever a champion that matters it puts them in a different category and it depends on his plate right now. We were asked on. I take today. One word to describe. Chris paul should he not should he go on to be eliminated in game. Six or seven and the word i chose was tragic because the real definition of tragic is not just that it's sad. It's that a heroic figure character. A hero is destined for that sadness based on some fatal flaw. In chris paul's case it may be his size because in a sport that selects out for height because the baskets ten feet ear almost never almost never has the best player in a championship team. Been under six foot four. Almost never. what about steph curry. He's six foot three and the only reason he was ever. The best player on a championship team is because lebron james is to best teammates both hurt. Otherwise steph would never have been the best player in a championship team. Ever isaiah thomas and the situation has to be just right to write like as as an elite the bulls don't have a team yet kareem's not there anymore. Certainly not as kareem right like all the things that to be just right for isaiah to get to. And that's one of the reasons he the top five all time point guard. So maybe it's that. Chris paul size by the time you get this deep into the season e even though it's virtually impossible for that guy to be the best player in a championship team he can almost do it but the exertion needs that by. Now something's gonna fall apart. He got hurt against in the houston golden state series. He's hurt again now. And maybe that's the fatal flaw size. But i would say that. If that's the case it will end tragically in the sense that a guy who in every other way seems like a championship player will never win a championship. Should chris paul not come through in game six. That was straight talk. Wireless no contract no compromise that sound hoops with dr dre andrei smelling espn nba senior writer. We're gonna talk about nba finals with my my. I was gonna say good friend. My good antagonised dray. What's going on dre only way back. I would say you my good friend. You know we the bestest frenemies so trey. I'm talking about this idea of momentum and a lot of times likening it to like obsessive compulsive disorder or superstition in baseball right that it exists because the universe is chaotic. And we're trying. And we feel insecure as a result and we try to create some order in our own minds and i think the idea of quote unquote momentum for pundits and fans and even time for players and coaches has to do more with that than actual analysis right. We don't know who's going to win. It's anyone series and because of that we just like the last team we saw winning so we say they have the momentum existed bucks have it. I mean well. So what they're describing this recency biased and by the way that neanderthals example. Yeah wow like like you went on that one. i'm. I'm feeling that but But yeah you're talking about recently biased. The last thing you saw is the last thing that you remember. I don't believe especially in the nba finals in momentum on that level As you know as we all know on here I picked up the bucks to win a long time ago and coming into the series I wrote that. If you're honest were healthy. The whole time i would pick the bucks fix so i believe that the bucks should win this game in six. Do i believe it's over of course not and momentum none of that you.
