The Facebook Whistleblower Is a Pro-Censorship Czar
"I turned to. Cbs to see what was on. And it was this. Facebook whistle blower found the whole thing to be really strange very staged very scripted. And so you have this whistle blower going on sixty minutes and said okay. This doesn't seem right just the way she was answering questions it was she kept on saying i want what's best for the company wants what's best for facebook and i think they're getting in their own way. So that's strange whistle blower the keeps on saying that you actually want what's best for the company that's kind of a weird way to frame it and so then today all of a sudden the whistle blowers in front of congress. That happened quickly. So you go from sixty minutes to congress and forty eight hours thirty six hours not even who put all that together. Is there a democrat staffer. That wants her to go in front of congress and so this woman who is testifying francis how gin. She's a thirty seven year old former facebook product manager who worked on the civic integrity issues at the company. Now mind you yesterday. Facebook was down mysteriously for five or six hours. And there is a theory out there. And i just want to reiterate it unsubstantiated and purely conjecture purely speculative that all of this is tied together that there might have been some sort of algorithm ix system reset within facebook which is why facebook went down for five hours yesterday. Why none of the people in charge of facebook seemed that confused or irritated when facebook went down. Purely unsubstantiated and speculative but it's interesting and it would make sense in a certain particular theory of analysis so francis hogan gets in front of facebook and she says something repeatedly look in order to save facebook from the children in order to save facebook or save children from facebook. We need more government regulation to monitor the political discourse on facebook so basically she is a pro censorship.

And then a timer will pick down and it will take basically The list of teams seven teams however many teams. It is Say the Somewhere in the neighborhood of of saturday somewhere in that zone it will take two teams matched them up and say okay go fight and all the teams go off into different spokes of the map. Where you've got like here's what area they don't really intermingle. You're just like oh. "Thing. I've seen quite a bit of in live poker. Is this attitude. This idea that the pro players are just better overall as human beings than the wreck players. Because they're able to do this thing where they can hold their emotions in check at the table and not do things that they regret not let the game get away from them so that they can continue to play pretty solid poker and earn enough money to make a living and what i've heard a lot of or seen a lot of. Is this kind of snickering behind the backs of recreational players. Where the pros adopt this attitude of arm so much better than him because look at him. He can't even lose two pots without going until oh look at that. He lost that one hand in then the next and he just gave it away. I would never do that. And so what i want to say about. That is those exact same people who are kind of talking shit about the wreck player businessman behind his back this exact same player quite often in order to hold their game in check in order to not do terrible things in terms of their poker player they end up having to go home and smoke bunch of we'd drink a bunch of beer or park themselves in front of the television for five hours just so that they can kinda let the steam off from all the emotions in the poker game that they were some -verting so they're not feeling their feelings in the game. They're not really letting that flow with presence and connection as a result. Everything's kind of blocked up and they're feeling quite tense quite miserable during the actual poker session. Because there's a lot of things that are going on in the game and it can be quite stressful and produce a lot of anxiety but instead of feeling those feelings and processing them as they come with they do instead is box it all away. Put it away to deal with later. I'm not going to deal with this now. I'm just going to do my job. I'm going to hold it in. And when i go home. I'm gonna release all that stress. I'm gonna do that thing. That's how they're going to deal with those emotions and so the funny thing is that this is literally the exact same behavior. Because if you're talking about the businessman or the person with the nine to five who holds it all in at work so that they don't yell at their boss so that their job performance doesn't suffer so that they can keep collecting their paycheck and supporting themselves in their family. Where does that person go to blow off steam to move the emotions through to deal with them. They go to the poker room and then they go and play bunch of hands that they should they get too aggressive. They call off too much money when they shouldn't as soon as anything happens at the poker table. That's not in their favor right. And so what they're doing is blowing off there and so there is actually the office for the pro and so the pros doing the exact same thing just in different places in so they're the pro is holding it together so that they don't blow their living so that they can continue earning money so that they can be respect. What work and not screw up their financial situation and then they take it home where they do the exact same behaviors just in a different thing. The context is exactly the same. The actual thing that they're doing the blow of this team is different. And so if you want a different way to go about it what i can offer you this idea that the more that you can be open to feeling your feelings as they come no matter what you're doing no matter who you're with you'll actually find that it's actually not going to be detrimental to performance in fact the more that you can get friendly with your feelings as they come have them be no big deal. The more that you can actually create presence and flow and move that energy ability to channel into higher performance than you've ever channeled into before with all of that energy of emotions comes the ability to use it to perform at your highest levels but most people want box it up. The taliban were back and forth and taking the airport taking the airport road and we sat there and we sent to each other. Massoud had a had a dutch visa that expired on the city. I it's time for us to go once rat falls. It's just a matter of time and so we back to kabul and we bought our tickets and a couple of days later Massoud was in the same ticket office and there were a thousand people lining up clamoring for tickets so we felt incredibly lucky when we touched down in east ambuhl Five hours after takeoff. It was in that we found out that the city had fallen the signs. Were there for days ahead and we were shocked but not surprised

They don't want you to know there are a couple reasons. They don't want proprietary algorithm. They don't want you to know what it is. But also i've always found a little bit strange. If they told us a little bit more about the algorithm week would probably be able to create content. Better served it. But they don't do that and so anyway. The point is i noticed these shifts and notice them with other creators. I pay a lot of attention to what other people are doing. What kind of us. They're getting so the one that we're talking about. I had started a second channel. Reduce some more creative content because it became clear to me that sort of lesser viewed videos would pull down your more view videos and what i learned it what i believe to be. A recent algorithm shift was. That's not true anymore and make the algorithms a little bit more advanced now and it can detect these videos that are lesser and kind of distinguish between them and the the bigger ones. Although i should note. I'm still kind of workshop on. I'm not sure that's true. I still look at some more to up with that conclusion. But that's what it looked like to me. And so i don't know you just have to pay close attention. Hope for the best. He say era obsessive about tracking. What are the metrics tracking counts as it drop-offs. Is it minutes watched. It's changed with the algorithm. You years ago. I five hours was everything within the first five hours. I could tell you how popular videos gonna be. That's changed completely. The algorithm now no longer rewards instant. Success it kind of builds over time and so i try to that for longtime like the first five hours everything and the loss rate between our one and two and three and four. What i've learned now is the week the one week number for views as a really really good metric and the change between the next morning and the one week is a really good metric. How much is it kind of growing in that time. That now is sort of the metric for me that it's going to be more successful but i also track a lot of other stuff revenue and yeah watch time one thing. I've been interested recently. Youtube has provided a new metric. Which is you can see where in your video people drop off. Look exactly what point. I found that tremendously interesting. Oh here's what people don't wanna see. Here's the more you'll even see. Sometimes videos actually increase in the middle of the video presumably because people have been late or something and it's like. Oh well maybe that should have been sooner to help more people or whatever that is really interesting stuff they give you so much data that you can peruse. What's really interesting about. This is it is true. You seem like the most data informed youtuber. That i've talked to but the format is like giving example like for someone who makes something that if format that you've just described as kind of richard like right. Where would you see if you're of. You're of the channel kind of responding to this the biggest way to see it is the vehicles that i choose to review. It is very clear to me that certain types of vehicles do a lot better than others even certain country of origin vehicles that sort of thing and vat heavily informs the decisions that i make about which vehicles review. I've always told people and i believe deeply. It was up to me. My entire fan would be eighties and nineties. We're like too high tech for their Just did a review on maximum. Today from nineteen eighty. Six talked to you like when the door was open it and say the door is open ridiculous. And i would love you more cars like that but my metrics tell me that actually people what they want new. Yeah there's a lot of suv's and family cars on your channel. Is that a connection. Between the metrics and people are buying and obviously. There's an advocate connection. There too is much as i love to do videos with weird. European cars Chevy tofte i mean those videos just they make all the money. You can get half the views and make the same money with a video like that because it's in market car. Shoppers americans looking for these cars canadians. And that's a that's what pays the best. Is that coming through the youtube partner program. Is that you selling direct. How does that revenue work for you. All through two beds. That's what i use the. I'm curious because you know your channel is. It's a huge success. You were able to leverage into launching another kind of business entirely which i do want to talk about but the actual mechanics of how a youtube channel works where the money comes from. Who's getting the splits. And how predictable it is. They are just a blackbox for everyone and every side of the equation. I'm always curious. Like how big is your team makes the channel with you. They were given an opportunity to do an internship out an organization and it's an organization that they would have loved to actually work for but it wasn't a paid internship was unpaid internship. And they asked about whether or not that would be kind of devaluing themselves to to take that or or whether the the other things that come along with it that kind of do. They outweigh the pay. So first of all have you. Have you worked at engine ship first of all in your life and have you ever had to do anything that you maybe you thought was like in spirit of a greater good but you didn't know whether it was worth. It is a little bit of an interesting concept especially based upon like what is the internship. What's the company. what are you doing for you. Know what is your. What is your intent with the work itself in for a lot of times. The internship really just about gaining experience or building network. Like that's really what it comes down to Especially when it's not paid you know like you're really just trying to get around potentially people or places that you really want to know to be around long term and potentially get a real job in in work for the organization as far as doing extra work and You know doing things kind of beyond a day job absolutely. I i kind of subscribed to that in general that kind of ideas. That if you are if you're lifelong learner if you're motivated by self developments If you're listening to this podcast now guess what that. That's kind of a sign that you are one of those You're probably always looking for little bits and pieces of things If it's a job it's a little bit more of a responsibility or project or something that you can get involved in if it's not at the job and something else that you do on the side so i believe always in finding ways to add value fighting ways to learn things or gain experience Through opportunities present themselves but again. Like that's kind of what i subscribe to and i've also met a lot of people that don't subscribe to that that are just like hey i have a job. I get paid from this time to that time. I do exactly what's outlined in my job description and if the estimate is for me to get this work done in six hours i turn it in at five hours fifty. Nine minutes Because that's what's expected of me. And i moved forward and they just look at you know a job as a job and so you know i i can see both sides of it but i think specific to the to the The internship thing. I think is a lot to talk about their In regards to just that idea of how much are you willing to put an effort into something without either it being your job or without getting paid for

"Let's get back to tom whitney well. Usually i like to start with background but You know i wanted to make sure we. We chatted a lease a little bit of golf before we got into. What makes your story unique. And i think we'll kind of circle back around on some more technical gulf stuff as well. But in your my. Where's where's your background story. Start you don't see a lot of people go from the air force academy to professional golf wondering if you could tell us a little bit of that story. Yeah so i'll to go just quickly leading up to the academy i. I grew up in northern california and lake tahoe area. The two guys just in reno-tahoe area and somehow picked up the game of golf at age. Seven where in tahoe where it snows nine months out of the year so i didn't grow up scanner snowboarding. I grew up playing golf and wants my brother. And i kind of really developed some solid golfing talent. My parents amid a genius decision to move all of us down to southern california and and mccain to palm desert area. And i mean that place you have one hundred and fifty golf courses within thirty minutes of driving everywhere. You look every corner just like starbucks tres. a golf course down there and So that's that's what i did as a as a kid i'd i'd go to school and then i play golf and thousand babysitter. That was my role model. That was my mentor. It was it was just being immersed in golf and learning how to get better and learning life lessons through the game and then my brother who's two years older than me in school he got recruited to play at the air force got me and And then threw him being there. I've got to visit campus and met. The coach saw. The team saw the facilities and really just thought it was a a neat place. I won't say that. I grew up with a ambition to serve my country from a young age. I don't have a long history of dad grandfather. Great grandfather all also in the military. My grandpa was a will to pilot but that was the extent other than my brother. But i thought it would be really fun to follow her brother's footsteps and check it out and the fact that he was already there like i mentioned i met to coach and also got recruited to play there and just just kind of ended up there and and freshman year is absolutely terrible. I wanted to leave every single day. Christmas break let's terrible about it so you start off with a six week boot camp. And that's in june july and august but it's six weeks of basically working out every day doing exercise. You don't wanna do your getting yelled at whistles. They don't really use logic you know. If you're the first guy out there in line will then you're just going to be the guy that's in the frontline. Rest the push-up position. The longest amount of time for six weeks. You can't really do anything right but on the on the other side of things the cadre side. They're they're breaking these basic cuts down to where they ha. They have no other option but to rely on one. Another to get through this. You cannot get through basic training on your own. If if you don't make friends and ask for help you have no chance of getting through. Some of my closest relationships are from people in my in my freshman squad. People i went through basic training with people. I graduated with from the academy just because it it's hard and you're going through it together you're taught to rely on others just to survive and so out of basic freshman year freshman year. I remember sleeping in a lot of classes. Even if you have an off period. I remember fallen asleep in in bathroom. Stalls or or or empty classrooms because oftentimes. You don't even want to go back to your your room if you have an off period because you've got a traverse across campus which means you're running on these perimeter marble strips on the square in between all the buildings if someone's curious just google toronto so at the air force academy and the outer marble strips is what freshmen have to run on. They can't cut corners. That can't go in straight lines. They got to run this perimeter. Once you get in the hallways you have to address every single upperclassmen by their name rank. You have to memorize information about them if they have if they're seniors. Juniors you got know a car. They are what car they drive. What they're studying hometowns. You know just access pressure required a memorizing it and again you can't do it on your own. You gotta lean on your classmates flash cards to learn all this stuff. Yeah so so yeah you you just kinda learn how to hide out like that's that's why i said instead of going back to your your classroom off period you just kind of find someplace to hide out. Take a little nap. Do whatever you gotta do. And then the highlight of the day is is lunch because you get to your teammates and then go down to practice. And so yeah. Those first five hours of the day are pretty pretty grueling and then you get to escape down the golf course and a man the golf course facility at the air force academy is just absolutely gorgeous. It's it's backdropped on right up against the mountains in colorado springs have thirty six holes there now. The golf team has their own locker room. Short game area. Driving range Indoor hitting facility surreally. It's started to become a five star facility and but it was pretty cool to be able to call this place home for four years. So yeah just just a circle back. You know that. That's a freshman year's is you have all these kind of silly rules that you have to hold their to kind of break down to teach you to well. They're supposed to teach you how to manage time and and not procrastinate and somehow slipped through but once you once you earn all of your rights back as upperclassmen starting that sophomore year. A lotta that extra stuff kind of goes away and then it's just it's just more classes and and golf So life kind of got a lot more normal starting a sophomore year other than i studied social sciences. That was my major. But i think one of the reasons i chose that was that was the least number of credits to graduate but i still think that number was one hundred forty six or one hundred and forty eight credits because the gen ed at the academy is just so stout it was tough. But you know you graduate and you get that diploma from the air force academy and i mean it. It opens a lot of doors Let me tell you the. I've been able to lean on the just the brotherhood and fraternity of not only the alumni group at the academy but I've i've had support from every single service whether it be army. Navy marines air force just. It's pretty cool because me being one of the one of the few veterans out there that are playing professional golf anyone that's tied to the military is is eager to kind of be part of my support and be willing to lend a helping hand if if i need it whether it's host housing or support otherwise i mean i've got a lot of people rooting free in my corner just from the military alone. Yeah gosh i believe that as i say on top of all that now go out and play golf too is is a challenge that you're trying to deal with but tell me about your career post academy your career in the airforce and some of the interesting things you've got to got to do with the air force so in two thousand and ten. When i graduated from that season that i actually cracked the top twenty five in the individual rankings on golf week or golf stat or whatever that is so. That was when i kind of realized that okay. I'm gonna eventually try fulltime golf as a as a career path. Now when you graduate from the kademi you also a number of years. service back. That's not a bad thing. I mean you graduate debt free from the academy and then you have a guaranteed job for five years..

There is something to be gained from and something to be said for like holding people up a little bit higher as benchmarks to you. Know kind of drive our own aspirations. I want heroes right so that cut out characters have to appreciate that. They're actually human. They're flawed but i think we all benefit when we celebrate people who do amazing things. I agree and that's part of what makes your your podcasts. Such such a must-listen because you bringing in unknown heroes a lot or maybe sometimes it is unknown hero or even just you know but to if you if you let one of those heroes talked for two hours you're going to understand and appreciate the the humanity will probably tell you what their weaknesses are. You know their security or what happened. Make it seem possible for you to be your own hero. Which is the whole point right at the end. Yeah but the idea was simone that because she's this great champion. She is disempowered from making those kinds of decisions for herself is wrong. Like you can't opt out your our hero. You're the you're the world champion. You're not supposed to do this so i. I am projecting onto you a set of rules that you must adhere to in order to remain the hero in my mind. Yup and that's fucked up his fucked up and the other fucked up thing. Is that here. We are human being social creatures who have become social media creatures right. That's where the people you meet. That's where families form. That's how you get strengthen grow that's how you learn. That's that's why trust process import is like you know the fake veneer If you compete behind the curtain you see. Everybody has that crap in less and it's messy is okay and i want everyone to know that it is okay and that you can get through it now. He'd get through it which you're gonna learn grow and that mountain you're climate. I got tell you like it's the wrong. Analogy is is the client of the top of the mountain. Everyone gets no. And i think it's important to point out and i'm glad you did as you were going through kind of all of these things. I apologize but anyway And i think there's a lot of stuff in there and so. I think this is not just for people who are mba's or ceo's teacher musician writer. Whatever i do think there are great. Just kind of life lessons in here for everyone are there. Do you think some of these because you are writing this from the perspective of a business person. Are there some that you think are the most universal that you find that your friends who are in other walks of life relate to the most. Yeah yeah. I mean what i've heard from When you read a book you know it is pretty humbly. I mean especially if you put out there you know is raw in humbling. So the first thing you know you you try to avoid is like the month thing because my mom takes up amazing. I promise you she. She described person. Who wrote my bio for that. They send you for its cost. So it's like you know. And and i love my mom. She loves this book and she thinks genius. I've gotten a note from trainers Credit pretty amazing Literally sweating level company to said like your audio book. I was driving from wherever to idaho. Something he said. "I mean for anybody who hasn't played it. you know. i used to say that before. I played echoes. I would recommend like three houses and echoes. I don't recommend that goes anymore as your first one. But i still strongly recommend three houses the first game. If you're trying to get into the franchise. I'll say this though. So having known that we had that discussion prior You definitely said you know. This is a good one to start out with you. Know i even. I think i saw like through twitter. Timeline maybe in youtube videos. That people even agreed was like. Yeah you know this is a good one to start out with high will admit the first five hours was kind of overwhelming. It was a little complex learning everything taking everything and trying to remember everything and what to do in any kind of get in a rhythm. I for the first five hours. Every time i went to go play. I was like i really. Don't wanna go back to this and and kinda have to learn and remember what to do it once. I got over that hump and kind of figured it out of you know the gates you know went wide open and it was fine when i got to that point but during the reason why i bring it up during that entire process it had me wondering is a really A fire emblem game. That really showcases game play really showcase a story and dial back a bit for a newcomer in regards to kind of not having to remember all this stuff and even take away the you know the prior knowledge of three different routes in kind of understanding that but even like monastery and just have just all this stuff. That is extra in. That is good and fun when you understand it but it's just stuff for a newcomer to kind of be overwhelmed with. I'm wondering if there's a better one to start out with what i mean like this. One pat the radiance and blazing sword fire seven. Those are the ones that people point to traditionally. But if you wake up, obviously, after just say, an eight hour sleep You walk into a waffle house at six a.m.. Now you've got a better chance to me to knock out like 45 waffles in the first five hours or so. So now you're kind of playing with a little house money over the next couple of hours and getting in there at six A.m. and leaving at six PM doesn't feel as as tragic. He got in there at four p.m. local time and just left Now the overnight hours is going to drag. It's going to be depressing. You're not going to want to eat. The lighting is weird at a Waffle House. The crowd is really weird at a waffle house at that in the middle of the night. I think the time that he tried to do this more as was was inefficient. I agree with that. Although you could argue no TV from a podcast book, some entertainment. There's a few things more entertaining than a Waffle House. And I dare say I would have probably done this on a weekend as well. The A Saturday night late night Waffle House that might be the place to be, he might have had the day wrong, not just the time wrong as well. I mean, we know I've been there at a Waffle House late night. You want to do the overnight hours Saturday night to Sunday morning, man. There's no need for t V. And today we are joined by Professor Adam Carrington. Because I'm going to talk about Grant. I don't know if Dr Oren is with us, but I know that all things he'll tail are at hill tail dot et you and I know that Professor Carrington is here. Good morning, Professor. How are you? I'm doing very well. Hope you're too I am. I want to give you the background as to why we jumped ahead. I asked a doctor aren't to set up a conversation about Grant. I was talking this week with a former member of the Cabinet who is reading extensively on the lives of three people. Nelson Mandela, Carl Gustaf a meal manner, Heym. And it drove drove me really over to grant because Unlike some of the older histories, I started to see how much the executive branch had been more than I think, the judicial active and vigorous and taking on what was a really monumental task, which is How do you protect the future and the rights of the freed slaves after having been in bondage as long as they had an after Now dealing with what was at that time, really a horrible situation in the reconstruction South with facing terror facing Mobs and lynchings and and how much the Grant administration really did Maura than it means in trying to do so that that really pushed me into a study of him having looked at how another branch I think didn't do as good a job and provides a Carrington. Have you read the chair now biography? I have. It's been a little bit, but I thought it was as usual with him. He is such a good storyteller, and I think it's a good in a line of works that are trying to rehabilitate Grant from the reputation that he had had as president for a very long time. Well, you missed the beginning when I told Professor Carrington that this and this might take a couple of weeks I was talking to a former senior member of the administration Cabinet member. About the political situation We're in this week, and this individual told me he is reading Mandela. He's reading Karl Gustav Emil manner Heym, who had never heard of who put Finland together twice after wars, and he's reading and grant and reconstruction, and that he esteems grant greatly and that was news to me. S so I picked up chair now and I am I'm pretty impressed with just the first five hours. So Professor Carrington, will you set the scene for us? After the war ends because reconstruction is what happens after APPA Matics. Right. It's it's amazing how little often in our public discourse. We talk about that era, given how much we speak of the Civil war itself. And you have a a catastrophic event where Lincoln had called in 18 61 for us, uh, not replaced full, Uh, Attempted to appeal the ballots, not bullets to settle our differences, and it didn't work. We had the bloodiest war as far as American casualties we've ever had. And so one of the questions after you do that in the civil War Especially a civil war, where you're facing where you're trying to put the country back together, not just separate from another another country is how do you return to politics? After that. And you have this amazing vindication of the Union against rebellion and the Declaration of Independence and its principles of Freedom and liberty with the enshrining of the 13th amendment. But you that leaves lots of unresolved questions because the South had a long tradition of slavery. It was a very proud people on and certainly with its virtue with their virtues and There. What? What are you going to do for the newly freed men down there? It's one thing to declare a slavery illegal. It's one thing to even win a war. But how do you patch the country back together? How do you protect federalism when the country is that just vindicated the sovereignty of the nation? And again that I think that the most pressing Woz how do you? How do you make it to the South is a place where African Americans can be equal citizens under law equal participants in the political process..

Let me get into this impeachment thing real quick. The argument first that they want to impeach. I don't think works, and I think it's a mistake. This takes me to my list of 10 things. Jim Clyburn says we might wait after by the 1st 100 days to send impeachment articles to the Senate. They just want to impeach now impeaching him A second time won't stop him from running. What they want to do is get a conviction because no person who has a conviction can hold a position of on an office of Honor. I believe those are basically the words of the Constitution. There s so that would be disqualified and that's why they're trying to do Man, That's that's a lot of fear for a guy you told us. His career is over. Just just noticing the politics on that one. You really I mean it Z either fear or just such amazing revenge. Right? Tony. What he did was horrible. Deeds versus words As I've often discussed, even I don't get to the place that he caused an insurrection. But if we're going to now make the argument that words matter, and people's words can be taken towards extreme ends. Well, good. Let's do that. But promise we will apply it everywhere.
