I kid you not twenty six hundred percent from march to april and forget about getting a rental car whenever you get wherever you are going marketplace's smithfield's reports on what travel pent up. Demand looks like joylin. Anthony and her husband are ridiculously excited to finally go on vacation. The pent up demand here in our own home to just leave the house and go do something. Is this huge ankara's accountant in oregon and recently at the height of tax season. I told my husband. I needed plane ticket somewhere. They decided on tennessee. Flights were pretty cheap. She says but rental cars. That's going to be one of the most expensive parts of our trip. They're also finding most places. They're thinking of visiting require reservations now and seemed to be booking up. That is true for all sorts of things from disneyland. Tickets to campsites a lot of people like anthony our booking trips within the us and in many cases staying relatively close to home. That's according to christopher not at airbnb more than seventy percent of the searches that we're seeing for destinations. That are fifty to three hundred miles away from home for folks. So you know this sort of i can get there on a tank of gas. Destination and many of these are sort of in remote locations. Any of the flights people are looking for in booking are also to more remote outdoorsy spots says Motorin and economist at the travel booking site hopper now parks have done really well and beaches have done really well. That seems to be where a lot of the interest currently has end. Motorin says airlines have been adding flights to those kinds of destinations.

Barrier Island Prepares for More Sea-Level Rise, Worsening Storms

"Teague island is known for its beaches hiking birdwatching and wild horses the uninhabited island off of maryland. And virginia's coast drew almost two and a half million visitors last year but acid sands are shifting underfoot when a storm hits. Strong winds and waves can carve inlets into the island and change the shape of beaches and storm. Surges can wash sand from the ocean side beach farther inland so over time. The island shifts. The northern portion of the island has moved about a half mile to the west in about the last forty years. Hugh hawthorne is superintendent of acid island national seashore. He says some movement is normal but as sees rise and storms get more intense. The rate of change is speeding up so the park service is working to adapt. Its facilities is now making restrooms and lifeguard towers portable so they can be moved to new locations as the island shifts. And hawthorne's says the park. Service plans to relocate. Its oceanside campground farther west. The island may change the way we manage. It may change but we expect acetate island national seashore to be here for a time.

It would be such a signal. "Diesel. Has a security problem with his neighbors who say that his security team act like they own the hood. S O. He Vin Diesel is renting a place in a gated community in the Dominican Republic and neighbors say he has 12 really aggressive security guards protecting him and his family. The next door neighbor says the last straw was this Easter. When the guards blocked pedestrians and traffic, so Vin and his kids could bicycle. Lord and have so this neighbor wrote a letter to him, which, of course, was obtained by TMZ. They've got people everywhere. And he says, You know, for a few weeks I've personally witnessed and heard from fellow homeowners, the unprecedented in abusive display of your security people around our homes and the beach. Interrogating us blocking our street with five or six SUV stopping residents while walking when you ride your bicycle. And you know they have a point. Sure, he says in over 10 years, the homeowners in this beach area have never endured or suffered such absurd comportment. Anyone renting a home and are very small and very private and very secure community. This guy happens to be from New York. No surprise market issue is that seven was doing I'm walking. You had a tinge of sarcasm when he wrote, he said, You should know you're visiting a community where, um Um That nobody feels threatened by people who are visiting the area. He's got this long letter. So apparently Vin Diesel has been going to this area for or at least the Dominican Republic for like 20 years. And he said. Well, I was riding my bike with my kids and handing out Easter baskets to workers in the community. His workers. His keyboards right here is like Hey, Bruce. Hey, go, Chuck. Number three. "In this episode. We're taking you inside one home in brazil where disinformation about. Feminism tested. the bond between a father and a daughter brazilian journalist giovanni fleck explains how women's rights have been attacked by fake news in brazil. I think one of the most disturbing things i've ever heard say was from this tape. Back in two thousand and three back then was another a congressman. He in congress when they in brasilia the capital in boston. I got into an argument with a congresswoman named maria. jose. But it got personal and she called him a rapist and he just called her beach writing front of the media after that personality didn't back down from her he her again and said i'm not going to rape you because we're not worth auditory visual in brazil. We call this sort of behaviour by man machismo. There's no english equivalent for my cheese. Mill it is idea of hyper masculinity that dictates what a man and a society are supposed to be it is everywhere and it's made a lot of people believe that men are superior to women. "I mean I wouldn't bet that, like, I watched the first beach sequence and, and had enough when the rest of one thing that pizza that, that I think is, is, pretty interesting is like, when you see Tom Hanks you see him in a lot of situations where his thirties, being challenged or where's the thority seems suspect and the high water Mark of this is the. Taking out the machine gun position at the loss of life of, of, of Giovanni Ribisi. But which, by the way is underscored with music. Whereas whereas the whole. The whole day landing is not underscored with music, which I which I thought was, which I thought was good. So, so I think this, this can actually get us into something that I think is, is at the core of the movie, which is kind of the relationship between the movie and, and sentimentality, right? And the movie and. Kind of Google, whether it kind of glorifies whether this kind of sepia toned greatest generation glow. Around this film and around like what they're. What they're kind of saying about about these people and about this war, you know, the difference between the no underscoring when, when all kinds of people die on the beach, and the underscoring when Giovanni Ribisi dies, but then, you know, but then, like someone's about to desert and Tom Hanks calls him back with a story of like his life at home. You know. And it, it struck me that, that this whole thing of acres walking across France is held together with stories and fictions. Right. Like one of those being that you have to listen to Tom Hanks, you know that because they're, they're just eight guys walking across France. They're not, you know, in, in a larger they're not in, in a larger context of, of a much larger military org. Musician where there's a. A lot of stuff. There's, there's a whole apparatus of, of. You know people and, and stuff and, and. You don't have that big map where the generals push a little units across. I was even just thinking, like in a lot of places where you see a lot of soldiers together, there's, there's a level of organization and logistics, that sort of seems to encourage you to play your part. Right. When you're eight guys walking across France. You have to have internalized that whole superstructure in order to play your part, especially when you're, especially when you're risking your life, and that's like, and that, like, what struck me that the theme of the movie like the whole thing of like, how do you earn it? How do you earn the death of your comrades? They're not even your comrades, these these eight random strangers who sort of who came and saved you from certain death. The, the you know, because I think we're supposed to think that the defensive that bridge would not have gone as well. If Tom Hanks wasn't there, how, how do you do it like how do you go on after that? And, and a big question to me in this movie was. How do you go on? You know there were a lot of a lot of points at which it's like how in, in a lot of spaces in, in a lot of levels of, of kind of literal and metaphor. Registers. How do you go on? And the, the one at the end, you know, is when all Matt Damon says to his wife, tell me I'm a good man. You know. That's what it takes..

"Yeah. I think thinking about it this way of thinking of beach houses, imagine, you're staying in one beach house sizable 's details, and they tend to be, you know, with lots of let's beds for multiple families or groups to stay in the same time. So you're in one beach house, and then erased to another beach house, and you you gaze out at the beach SEC some lights on and you ask yourself. I wonder if anyone is staying there, and you observe it until you find definite signs that there is an individual in that house, and then then maybe you can count how many individuals are in that house. But then if you ask the same question about your own beach house, well, then you can their ways to try and figure that out but not the same the same ways. Right. You might do a bit of listening. You might do a bit of roaming around of. Of rattling the curiously locked doors that go who knows where that's a really good analogy. I like that a lot and so by running around within our own house. We have discovered by say the early nineteen hundred late eighteen hundreds early nineteen hundreds we had discovered a lot of stuff we discovered eight planets at that point the first six planets, mercury Venus, of course, Mars Jupiter and Saturn have been known about since ancient times. Ancient astronomers with the naked eye could see them in the night sky and of their movements and all that then in seventeen eighty one you had urine us or Uranus. We still have to decide which one we truly prefer. Uranus was found by sir. William Herschel with telescope wanted to name it after King, George and fortunately that didn't happen. Then Lavera the the French astronomer predicted the placement of Neptune by the wobble in Uranus. And he said I predict there's another planet here, and you can find it. And then they. It and looked for it. And they did find it and that was in the eighteen forties. So we're up to seven planets at this point by the eighteen forties, by the way as long as we're snickering at at the planetary name. Uranus I do wanna throw in to call back to old episode that I hope that one day someone writes science fiction tale in which a starship is headed toward Uranus. And it's called the guy Abobo that would be a great ship title there that is brilliant that is absolutely brilliant. Wait a minute. I think said does say minute ago that Neptune was the seventh planet. I feel like I've got that ringing in my head for some reason if I said that that's entirely wrong Neptune is the eighth planet, obviously. So apologies. If I misspoke if not this is just a maybe someone at out. Sorry. I had to say that before I forgot. But yes, the guy Bulga that should be the ship to your ENA -solutely much more vodka tive and resonant than Voyager two. Yes. Whatever they've previously used, but let's pull it back in meet a guy ready to meet a guy a mustache EEO, gentlemen. Yes. Okay. So it is time to meet a fellow by the name of Percival Lowell. I think we visited the sky on the podcast before. Then mustache does look familiar so Percival Lowell was born to a wealthy prominent family in Boston in eighteen fifty-five, they'll Lowell family. So he was brother of a Lawrence Lowell who was a lawyer who ended up becoming president of Harvard University. He was also the brother I didn't realize this until recently of the poet Amy Lowell who I guess is considered a modernist poet, she sometimes called an image est, but I picked out one of her poems because it had an image that seemed to maybe a bit relevant to to today. The poem is called balls. I'm not gonna quote the whole thing. But she writes throw the blue ball above the little twigs of the tops and cast the yellow ball straight at the buzzing stars all our life is a flinging of colored balls to impossible distances. It's nice now, I think the image..

Oh, goodness. Is this not good? I saw the ninety eight percent. But I don't like rotten tomatoes a lot of the timber. I just think no. Critics anymore public. Where you can find the right brothers national memorial today outside of the Outer Banks nine other national seashore have been created making appearances on virtually every American coast. But there's a reason that the Outer Banks was first and the rest is history. We started the last two stories of the pop quiz. So let's give you one more. How many faces can the average person recognize according to a new study? It's a pretty impressive number yet way. More than I thought how many would you have thought? And we're talking about faces that we can actually recognize not necessarily remember the name of I'd say like five hundred and even that I think would be high wonder how far off bed number is. Let's find out researchers in the UK saddled to answer to basic questions. How many faces do people know personally, and how many famous faces two people recognize to figure this out. This started by having twenty-five study participants spend about an hour listing people whose faces they could mentally picture. The researchers give them fourteen brainstorm categories, including family friends school and people they met on a trip the name listing started off pretty quick but got more challenging as the our progressed. Nobody ran out of names before the hour was up though. So the researchers used the data to extrapolate when each person would have probably run out of names. And therefore, how many names they probably would have remembered then researchers had participants do pretty much the same thing only with famous faces. In the end people typically listed more faces from their personal life than that. It was celebrity faces at about four hundred two three hundred and for the last part of this study, the researchers put together a database of more than three thousand famous faces and asked participants how many they'd recognized this time though, participants didn't just get an hour the integrated into the normal routine over three months in the end participants recognized about five faces for every one they recalled in that first test and for some more number crunching and extrapolating, the researchers had a number one.

"Get smarter and just a few minutes. I'm Cody Goff. And I'm actually Hamer today. You learn about the man who invented the scientific method the story of America's first beat and how many faces the average person can recognize let's set aside some curiosity on the award winning curiosity daily pop quiz who invented the scientific method. Can you name him kind of weird? Right. You know, the names Louis Pasteur, Albert Einstein Newton. But what about the guy who you know, kinda invented science? This is a story that late in history and science buffs. You know, this before you worked at curiosity. Ashley, I did not. Yeah. It's lost to the pages of history. It's kind of surprising to me that someone invented the scientific method at all. But someone had to everyone has to I guess everything has to be invented. Yeah. Well history is full of forgotten heroes. And one of those heroes is ebbing, Al. Eighth him. He was born in. What is now Bosra Iraq sometime around nine sixty five. See the details of his life are a bit fuzzy. But we do know that around the dawn of the eleventh century, he moved to Cairo Egypt, and he had an unfortunate habit of getting on the wrong people's bad side. He had the ministry of job that he did kind of poorly and according to a thirteenth century account. He had to feign madness to protect himself from the wrath of caliph. Fortunately, he didn't get a death sentence. But he was placed under house arrest for not doing what is boss wanted. It turned out that a comfy prison full of scientific texts and tools was exactly what El Haithem needed over the next decade. He proved that light travels in a straight line he demonstrated how mirrors work, and he made the compelling and correct arguments that light Benz when it travels through water. Yeah. A thousand years ago, but the biggest thing you did for science was come up with the scientific method. Let's because he didn't want to just tell the world what he'd figured out. He wanted to show the world how he figured it out. So he meticulously documented his experiments in more than forty academic works. That included subjects from the behavior of lights to how the planets moved to architecture and engineering about one hundred years after he died. His most influential work was translated into Latin. It was called the book of optics, and it became a top seller among Europe's favourite thinkers, including Roger bacon, Yohannes Kepler and even Leonardo Davinci. So remember the name Eben album? It's about time. He started to give a little recognition now that you know, who invented the scientific method. Here's another pop quiz. Where was America's first beach as in? Where was America's first national seashore, California, New jersey, Florida? The answer comes with a really cool story as a mid western boy, I had no idea. I mean, I definitely would have thought this was California. Probably because I'm a California girl. Yeah. So this story begins with. New deal that was a series of public works projects. Thanks to president Franklin D Roosevelt designed to benefit the US while putting Americans back to work will in nineteen thirty three the stretch of shoreline that would become America's first national seashore saw a record number of Atlantic hurricanes and tropical storms, they devastated. The surrounding area by a rotating, the shoreline stripping most of the vegetation, and even knocking some buildings off of their foundations, and it also caused property prices to bottom out, the locals realize that if they wanted to keep the land livable. They had to do something about shoreline erosion, well, a good portion of the shoreline was owned by the family of a famous philanthropist named Henry Phipps, and that family figured out pretty quickly that they could either keep paying taxes on their mostly worthless land, or they could donate it to the state where they lived. So they went with the second option and the.
