"first baseman" Discussed on GSMC Baseball Podcast
"Sixteen. He had a to ninety two average and in two thousand seventeen to seventy three average his. Opn did drop down a little bit from nine. Twenty eight to eight ninety nine but from two thousand fourteen in two thousand sixteen. He was an all star. He's been in the mvp voting before he's won a couple of gold gloves. He's won a couple of shorts. Are silver sluggers so the guy can not only hit the ball. You can also field. And that's a huge huge thing. That i think a lot of people forget about first baseman they deserve as fielders and so of being a really good field. The first base position. You have to give credit because it's a tough position to play at times. I don't think people realize although it seems very easy having pick balls out of the dirt or having to stretch properly or trying to have to on a bad. Throw configure your body in a way where you'll be able to at least stay on the bag or try and catch it and then tag. The runner i mean there's a lot of things moving a lot of moving pieces going on all at once at that first base position especially if it's a bad throw or if it's close play and being able to have a fielder first baseman that that is that is that good fielder. That's always a great sign. I personally think that rizzo is he He might get moved. He might get traded in all honesty and he's thirty years old so he's not necessarily out of his prime. I think that from twenty four hundred twenty six thousand was kind of just a glimpse into the capable of doing. And we've kind of seen a little glimpse of it. And i think now as he progresses into his thirties he might feel out of success. That a lot of these other guys are start to see in their thirties and mid thirties and even in the later thirties. Now i think that as time goes on he can continue to get back up to those numbers. I mean twenty nine hundred ninety two to ninety three so he's not that far removed from a really good season any twenty seven homers and ninety four. Rbi's so he clearly clearly has not been that far removed from being successful. So i think that anthony rizzo is going to have a lot of Many more years ahead of him. And i really kind of excited to see where he winds up. Because i don't know if he'll stand a cubs uniform i could see them eventually shipping him off for prospects once they get through a rebuild face. I think that is on the verge in chicago. But we'll have to see getting into number four now the monthly. I'm a big fan. Well i'm going to retract that statement for a second again. A brewers fan. You don't like teams that beat your team the in two thousand eighteen. They beat my team. And max month was a big culprit of that. But you gotta give the guy his respect right. He's a really really good baseball player. Sure he's not a great average guy doesn't hit for a huge average but if you think about it he's a great guy. When it comes to power he had two straight years from two thousand eighteen and twenty nineteen of thirty five homers and then in twenty eight hundred seventy nine. Rbi's in two thousand nine hundred ninety eight rbi's and he was an all star in two thousand nineteen so the guy can clearly play the guy and he's only been playing. This is his fifth year. He's twenty nine years old. He took a there was a year where he was injured for most of the season and twenty seventeen. So you know he's really. This is his fifth year playing and he's only twenty nine so he's got a lot of potential. He's got a lot of promise. i think. Only at twelve homers and twenty seven. Rb is this past year but what i really look at and what i think. A lot of people also look at is his war his wars absolutely staggering in twenty four point one war and then in two thousand nine hundred five point seven war so if he was just strict. 'cause he doesn't just play first base. He's a really solid utility guy. I think he's kind of a diamond in the rough that you don't find very often a guy that can head also really good at drawing walks. He's a very very patient hitter. And i think that's another thing that people need to take a little bit more into consideration. Shore his strikeout. Numbers are pretty high but in two thousand nine hundred ninety walks. That's not too bad. Eighty eight eighty nine. A ps two thousand eighteen nine seventy three. Oh pm the guy can clearly head you know. This was his first year in the last three seasons or two seasons that he's been below one hundred and a ps plus so hopefully he can get back to his normal form because when he's at his normal form he's one of the best in the business. Now the third guy. I want to get into is paul goldschmidt. Paul goldschmidt is i think people forget about him. And i don't know why i don't know if it's because the cardinals are forgettable franchise or what but paul goldschmidt. I think is one of the best first basements in game. I mean the guy has been all star six times. He's won three gold gloves. Four silver sluggers. Not that bad of a season if you ask me twenty thirteen lead. The nfl in home runs and thirty six one hundred and twenty-five rbi's but if you look down even further from twenty seven to twenty nine thousand nine he had three straight years of over thirty home runs and he also hits. Were very very solid average. If you look at it in two thousand thirteen out that career year he had added three. Oh two in a nine fifty two and again. Like i said if you've got an eight fifty or higher and you've got to fifty average or higher. I consider that all star numbers nowadays. If you're a power hitter and again you have to probably have twenty. Some home runs and sixty some. Rbi's by the all star break. But if you're batting three. oh two. And you're putting up thirty. Six home runs. That is a staggering number. That is alarming. If you ask me so i really like goldschmidt. I love the way that he feels too. I think he's very very mobile. He's he's great at stretching and picking balls out of the dirt. So i'm going to give number three to paul goldschmidt and then the last two guys i want to mention. I think we all know where this is going. It's just a matter of who puts. Who at one. Who puts a two. I'm putting freddie freeman it to then i'm putting jose abreu at one why i just. I've always liked the way. Jose abreu plays the game. I just thought that he's been very consistent. Both of them were mvp's and their respective calm or this year or leagues. I should say that fray freemen's a four time all star he's a gold glove or he's been a silver slugger before jose bray. You is a three time all star three times silver slugger. You know i mean. Mvp rookie of the year. He's won a lot of. They've both been very decorated over the last few years and i think if you look at their numbers they're somewhat of similar players just opposite leagues really. I mean they both hit for pretty solid last year for abreu batted three seventeen and he had sixty. Rbi which led the entire mlb. In over for freddie freeman. He batted three forty one. He had thirteen homers and fifty three. Rbi guys that are hitting staggering numbers. And you can see why they're so good. They're hitting those i mean. Their numbers are just astronomical. So i'm going. Freddie freeman to jose brady one ultimately though these are some really good first baseman and again i left album..
"first baseman" Discussed on GSMC Baseball Podcast
"Welcome back to the gmc baseball podcast. Jack right now with you. All an nf burst segment again right into some big time news in the baseball world. Touch on some free agency. Signings in anything really inbetween be sure to stick around for the final few minutes of the show today as get into my by it or deny segment and and share whether or not i buy or deny the claim or believe that i will post coming up here in a little bit so stick around for that i wanna get into mine rankings of the top first baseman in the mlb right now and who are some of the best hitters and fielders at the position in the game right now and again right now. There's going to be some names on this list. That should be. I think it just in general terms maybe if we said hey the best first baseman over the last twenty years the last really of all time. Yeah we've got three of the best all time i would say earliest to the best all-time still playing. Miguel cabrera holes. Joey votto obviously pools and cabrera way better than vodka but still has been very very good. But i left those guys off the list because these are the guys that are really good right now. Pools is definitely on the back end of his career. Cabrera the same thing joy bottom might have a good year or two left in him. But let's all face it. They're all over the age of thirty five. Pools is forty now so there are a little bit. Pass their point of of their prime. But i want to get into some guy's earned the prime right now or at least at some point of their top part of their career. I would say so getting into number ten yuli. Gurriel is my first election at ten. The astros first baseman. And i think he's been a big piece for this ashes team early on in his career. He kind of had a later start to his career. Didn't start playing until he was almost thirties are just about her later. Twenties so definitely a little bit of a later start to his baseball career. But he's been very consistent hitter for the most part. I mean he's bad at to ninety or higher in each of the last three years before twenty twenty he did bat to thirty two and two thousand twenty six homers and twenty two. Rbi's but the thing about out is that he's got a lot of power capability he's got a high potential for a lot of power. He belted thirty one homers and one hundred and four. Rbi's is in two thousand nine hundred to ninety eight average an eight eighty four s not to mention a one twenty six p. s plus and only sixty five ks and one hundred and forty four games. I'm gonna take a second on that. Sixty five ks one hundred and forty four games that is a staggering rate to minimize the amount of strikeouts that you're getting as a first baseman usually when you got a first baseman at the big power hitter nine times out of ten. They've got high swing and miss rate. That's just how it is there swinging for the fences. And that's how it's going to be but at the same time if you've got a guy that can limit that and real that back a little bit and is a patient hitter at the plate. And he's he's a power hitter. Patients in power tend to not go hand in hand all the time. But if you find somebody that's got patients in power there. I would say you know a far and few between if you will and i think that's right there. He has not been doing all star game. He hasn't been a silver slugger or gold glove winner but in all honesty. There's a couple of guys on this list of haven't been too many all star games. But they're still really really good. And i think that the low strikeout numbers is what really caught my eye his ability to be a power hitter at at sometimes and not mentioned in a three point nine war in twenty one thousand nine which was the eighth highest first baseman so not too shabby staff to have for eureka. He's coming at number ten but coming in at number nine. I'm going to go with carlos santana and this might be a little bit of a bowl. Pick i mean he's addison say a couple years at least twenty nine thousand nine hundred and i think that was all star year. That was really kind of his best year. So far twenty twenty was not a great year for him. I mean he was really. He really struggled but again. There's a lot of guys that struggle than twenty twenty right. I mean that was kind of the overall arching theme of christian. Yelich cody bellinger. All of these superstars that are really really good. Did not have very good years again. Only sixty games. You can't really do a whole lot in that amount of time if you start out pretty slow. After the first ten games crow santana though he's had four straight years of at least twenty or more homers and the last four years before twenty twenty when that happened so really from twenty sixteen. Twenty seventeen near two thousand fifteen just about two twenty nine thousand nine. That's when he was at his best that's what he's been at his best and you know in all honesty he might have been pretty good this year if he played more than sixty games he built a career high. Rbi's with ninety three and twenty nine hundred and then he hit thirty four.
The NFL May Have To Use Refs-in-Training Due To COVID-19
"It's possible that we could be looking at a replacement situation for the refs because the nfl. A total of seventeen referees crews k which is enough for a full day schedule but in the event some of these people get you know down from the mid day could be calling on training referees. Oh awesome because the train ones already blow a lot of calls right so that the ones that are still in training could come up from the minors to ref the games especially in week seventeen because all the games are going to be played at the same time. So here's here's here's the funny part. I mean i would love to do. And you're the math person. If we can do a comparison of the bush league nfl refs versus the regular refs. We get and compare how many pi calls. Yeah like over or have any. There's either missed. Yes you're called for no reason whatsoever. And how many of the teams who are typically over penalized all of a sudden. Aren't you know what i mean but that would be interesting to see. Yeah it's going to it's going to be. It's gonna be exciting day of football if that's actually the case and that happens so let's hope that the real refs do we hope that the real refs stay healthy because maybe the replacement refs. The training reps are baseman ruins. I don't know i'm over all the refs. Can we just have anarchy desert to be rapson football. Maybe they should just leave it to the fans. Even fan controlled. Football situation has something going you
Pirates trade slugger Josh Bell to Nationals
"The nationals are hoping Josh bell could regain its potent batting stroke the nets have acquired the first baseman from the pirates for two pitching prospects the twenty eight year old bell was an all star in two thousand nineteen following a torrid first half in which he hit three oh two with twenty seven home runs and eighty four RBIs before the break but that form has been elusive ever since bill hit two thirty three with ten home runs during an injury shortened second half of two thousand nineteen and hit just eight home runs while batting a career low two thirty three in fifty seven games for the box and twenty twenty I'm Dave Ferrie
Philadelphia Phillies Legend Dick Allen Dies At 78
"Tony i wanna see a few words about the passing of dick allen. One of my favorite players as a teenager philadelphia phillies richie allen. But he wanted. Mvp on the south side in one thousand nine hundred seventy two plan for the white sox and two years later tony. He had what i thought was a but at the time was a fifteen year old kid in attendance. It was split. Check swing down the third base line. One out in the ninth inning against nolan ryan broke up the no hitter. The closest i ever came to seeing a no hitter in person with all the games. But dick allen he was a hell of a player probably didn't get his do then and michael schmidt one of your favorite players know a big defender of dick or richie allen whatever. He was particularly affiliate for mike schmidt. Just a wondrous player michael jackman. He's one of the greatest third baseman of all time.

But we'll see what's the living situation last year because the indecisiveness up down up down and this year you know you're GonNa hope hopefully be the whole year you know. What is that like and you still say hotel. I don't know how that I'M GONNA get. I'M GONNA get a places when you're when you're on the forty man. I mean I could have done last year too but just I didn't know obviously when I be there when you get called up you get seven days and so I think I got three weeks of hotels for free which is great but other than that. I just bounced hotels and then Yeah this year I just kind of want get some small. Just put my stuff too crazy to live like that. Balancing hotels needs. That's been tweeted about and covered more than past probably because we have a really good players on both sides pitching and hitting What is that dynamic? Who is a guy who you dread kinda facing out there like when Chapman Jaffe is going to be my guy especially being a lefty? Yeah Yeah just you know. It's never fun to face Chapman and nine thirty in the morning if you're anyone but I mean for me. I'm not a huge fan of live. Vp's I just. I don't have the answer. Not The energy. There's just no adrenaline there as well. Yeah it's just it's just kind of just take it as kind of seeing pitches and you know. Look at shapes shapes of the pitches and things like that but yeah I mean I don't WanNa face anyone on our staff Kathy. You know you got like sometimes leave. China thank God exactly. It's like a nice signed caller. At least I don't have to face. Have you faced him yet in the lobby now? I only had three Tommy Chad. Green Otero Tommy. How'd that go down the guy you just want to get ahead off? We Talk Shit to you. Of course you punch me out. So he's got it over. What are you talking through? Four straight CHANGEUPS. Kidding me through may three five. I mean it's so good that he just goes but he's he's got a little bit bigger break while this year so that'll help him out to look good and his in his one live that I saw and then Yeah I mean I think some guys worked on SOME DIFFERENT VISION. I think auto at the change will be really good. Shot seems to have a pretty good kirpal. So different shapes especially off of their of their fastballs and auto slider. He's got the pitch go and the other way so it'd be I mean it's the best bullpen in the game and they're probably getting better. You had map late to that equation to all the analytics behind that should be something mentioned Garrett Cole Have you have. You had any reactions with him. What what does he come off? What are your first impressions of him? Yeah he he's real. He really loves the game Hit yesterday not pitching nothing there the entire time which is awesome out of a guy like that. I mean. We don't have to be like that so just to have that. I think he wants to bring it into the clubhouse At least that's the feeling I get. Every time around him. Talks to the younger players especially pitchers but you can just tell it cares which is nice for a guy making that amount of money on that contract to help solve our again. I I when he has opening press conference and the guy has just signed with the New York Yankees lifelong dream. And he's out there thinking. I can't remember Tom. Heppner's two guys who just on the hall fame. And he just mentioned them and they have Marvin Miller. I think along with other guy and this guy's just want us to baseball loves the game and he seems like he comes off to a rocket scientist. That guy who just like he is like not only is he had this unbelievable God given talent but like he's so smart and indeed. A lot of a lot of our pitchers are are really liked. That a lot of men auto had that zone pitching lab right one point. You know So I think that you know the game they have a nice happy medium of using the numbers but also not solely focusing on them. You know they're concerned about. I want to see him after what they can improve on it. I think you need a happy medium in everything. Definitely what would you hit? Is You knew what pitch was coming. Every time it'd be a lot more fun I can tell you that much but mean look it is what it is it happened. Well ask hypothetical just in case I mean. I think you'd be surprised. What guys would hit with a t there because defense is real good in the Big Leagues? You know thinking t's hard fucking thing I definitely be higher for so you know that's Kinda everyone at this point who we're awesome. Yeah I don't really the only thing that kind of just coming out that could impact other people is that they don't know about in game video anymore which is which is kind of a big a big deal for especially kind of bench guys like. I need to see a window or the pitch is coming from important part of my daily preparation for the game. So we'll see what happens with that That would be unfortunate. I think a lot of people would be bothered by the hitters. Yeah so we'll we'll see what happens but that's basically the only thing. What is your routine like before? Seven o'clock one o'clock yeah me independent so if I'm starting it's completely different than when I'm not when I start. I take BP. When I don't I don't and I basically don't do anything. Get their one. But I don't do anything until like eight thirty. What he's not doing anything like what are you doing like go in the training room? Get loose Obviously we got. I got to go out to stretch. I'm I'm not going to be the guy that doesn't go out the stretch. So you stretch take ground balls do my defense stuff. But just don't have be and then come back in and kind of eat. Eat Your dinner and then I get dressed than kind of just chill. You talked about the spread though because I've eaten at the Abbey. This blue jays spring training. Silly fantastic man. Yeah I can only imagine. How's the meals in the in the DUGOUT clubhouse before the game I mean they do an incredible job? Everyone that works there. The two shifts are great. Sometimes they cater in. It doesn't get what's your favorite meal that they got you. There's everyone like I'm upset with him but I don't really. I generally don't even eat in the city a lot because I go have lunch. They're like why would you waste my exactly so you know. Uh Take my 275 train ride and then got follow but I really liked their surf and turf one that they do like once a week so I'll go. Yeah we question food yes so since you went to Princeton I had to ask. What's your hoagie haven? Order Dirty Sanchez. Extra dirty choice fat lady to close the Mac. Daddy never had it taken cheeseburgers and fried Mac and cheese bites. Sounds PRETTY GOOD BLINK..

"Days a week six days a week. And you're like I hot. Yoga is just a miserable experience. Yeah it was three years ago and I was like. I'm never doing this again. A fallen in love with it back. Yeah it's like my favorite our day in the off season so it was a typical hour of volume. Like you end up in a pool sweat but it's very relaxing. I think for it sucks but it's relaxing at the same time and it helps other ways for baseball to like you know the breathing exercises everything like that kind of calm you down so just perfect for what I need. You're one of the few guys that were able to actually stay healthy last year. So far this year knock on wood. He's hot yoga the secret. I don't know man I don't know but you know I always make a little joke that you need a little fat on your phone call. It's a long season so one hundred sixty two games you know. Gee Played One hundred fifty eight. That's what a lot of people forget you know before last year He's just kind of had a bad luck. So but one hundred sixty two games fix the toll so you need a little bit extra. That's my reasoning. What have you thought of Eric Cressey on new training training staff. And all that. All new methods He's put a bunch of guys in place. I've had a little bit of direct contact with them but Mainly more with Donovan. Santa's who's going to be kind of the whole Minor League Guy And then Mccabe WHO's Who's the head Guy Now? And he's kind of set them up you know for exactly what he wants. And it's been great. They've been a great group. So would you officially like to say you're in the best shape of your life? Yes it's close. I came into. They wanted me to come into spring training at like two fifteen one year and I hit one homer in the first three months. Like getting Fatty That was probably the best shape I was in but but I hit one homer in like three months like so now. You're peak athletic correct. Let's go yeah. What is like a typical day down here when you have a relative off there? You're not playing. What are you doing your spare time so for me like you know if it's a stay back going you know stretch. Bp obviously you know. Try to hit a little extra either machine or what's called. Net drill is another big drill. I do take care of the body. Probably get home around one and then majority of time. I just take my dog to the park. It was the beach and it's A. It's a beach dog park so I chill there and then usually dinner you golfer no Gulf. I've closed down here. They're still in Scranton. And it's been working so I left him there. Okay sure so superstitious. Oh Yeah I'm very superstitious and everything Just leave them there. Please don't send what other things. Fallen superstitious I had a friend send me dirt from the field of dreams in two thousand fifteen euro at one homer to fifteen with one homer in the Florida State League. One of my buddy's DADS sent me a vial of sand from the field of dreams and was like this is good luck dirt. Just rub it on your batting typed out a little note or something like it can't get any worse. I started doing it every game now. Had them send me more last year says well? I think you're gonNA see some more is because what are your. What are your thoughts about heading down? There later in the year should be awesome screen. Sob Lit up to bring them back. Oh might need all this but no I mean it should be great time. They do a great job with all those. You know. Kind of a special series. I didn't go in the London series. That would have been. That would have been cool but everyone that went said it was amazing and you know we also have the two exhibition games in. Montreal which will be pretty cool and I'll be the race home. I guess in a little bit. Yeah something you know. I never been there so it'd be nice and you know I've never been to fill drain so it's you get to travel some places that I wouldn't normally go to for sure what we've just talked the talk and he's never seen field of dreams which I've seen parts have never seen it full through so I got to admit that too so I gotta I gotTa get that movie in before. Maybe like your flight over there. We'll just watch me. Okay this is what we're going to hear. What is your favorite baseball movie? Who Major Leagues Classic? Like a what? Is it little big league when the the guys the coach to? That's a good one too. I was hoping I I said last. Bench warmers and bad news. Bench warmers this classic. See a funny movie perfect fool. You Fair don't need. Sunscreen is eaten as on screen so obviously the competition first base this year and hearts. Kinda get in the Knicks are so him taking some Reps. What's been the competition like between you voight Harrison there too. I mean I think it's I think it's great that make us plan other positions that makes him extremely valuable for anyone with with his bat to And it's good that he's healthy. He's he's going to be a big part of the with me and it's just you know friends. We don't really talk about it. We just kind of go about our day. Whatever happens happens and you know so. What is your guys relationship off the field? You enjoy his wife's usually with them. So you know maybe here and there go to dinner but you know in the clubhouse and everything always friendlier. Yeah who's in your click off the field hanging out with my biggest guy was Nester. So he's gone by the time his friends with Tyler Lawrence instead. They like him because he was a wine his last name okay. Why mine came third. Yeah Nestor was my. We've come up together so as you know we've always played with one another for six years so it was easy and then a few of the other ones been traded away Ryan mcbroom was was a good really good buddy of mine and AAA He's killing it now with the royals which is good for him. But yeah I mean a bunch of guys in the clubhouse Wade Clint all good people Gardening you know arts. Just everyone's like everyone's Dad. That's awesome you mentioned. Clinton I feel like he gets like a bad rap sometimes media. We've had him on before and you know we thought he's cool. What do you think he sort of gets a bad rap? Sometimes what does he like truly in the clubhouse? Yeah I mean He. We are locker right next to each other in the clubhouse so we talk a lot. I think he's a little bit misunderstood For sure You know and that's going to happen with some some things that were said in the past and different things like that but you know he's done a great job handling this stuff I would even say from last You know playoff run to to now. He's he's been great about it. So thank you can switch the perception a little bit. Just it'd be better for him but hitting home runs. We'll do that. Yeah exactly like one soda a little bit. Have you been the subject of a victim of Brett Gardner Prank? I know he's No. I've heard a lot of ideas lately and they're all really good so once they're coming. Oh He's like the one that he did in. The past was great too that I heard on the only one that I've really heard about and then the car it's hilarious tells a little picture of. I think he said it was like one of the pitchers on the team is great. But there's one coming up. That should be pretty good. It's belong game too short game him having like a calendar getting with all the strings. It's time he's knocking to like confide and Mike and it just spits because it's going to happen. That's you had wild season last year become. What was your favorite moment from last year for you? I mean personally. It's gotta be the walk off. That was you know that literally was what I said in the backyard. Every day as a kid growing up like you know other than probably added game seven in their you know but it was also really cool to be a part of a lot of stuff to be honest with you I thought that was. You know. Three of the highlights. I think his three thousand three hundred fifty that milestone three thousand strikeout and then his sendoff with his family. I was like Oh man. I got sunglasses. Crazy emotional bud. Did you travel the team postseason? Or were you down in Tampa where I was just in New York. Those first two games that they played the Twins awesome to be around the atmosphere and just kind of get a taste of it and then came down here. So what is it like? Obviously you're watching all the games here with everyone down here. What's it like seeing. Come off that mound against the Astros in tears like that's it like going out with literally every of his body and put on the field. I mean that's just him he was gonna go until until it didn't work and he's done it for what he did it for twenty one years. I mean that's an incredible amount of time amazing career and just to a great person to it was. It was said at the time. But that's what he wanted to do. He wanted to give everything until he was done. Absolutely you mentioned that. Walk off home. Run against as being a dream. How'd you celebrate that? I didn't do much actually my high school one of my high school coaches was. There are two of them. Were there with their wives. And then my mom and dad were there so Just grab some dinner with my parents and kind of had a chill night and you know nothing too crazy New York's crazy place where it's tough to get on the train. After I go from the guy sitting in a corner that no one knows to just from one little thing to you know. Hey how are you like when you get on the train and now I gotta take an Uber But You know it was nice. It's nice to be you know. Have that and I guess. That was a good celebration for me. The weeks to come and just kind of starting to roll a little bit. Did you get noticed a lot after that when you started hitting a walk off and people in the streets start noticing comparative to before. Yeah definitely I was kind of the no one. So that's not a bad thing. The Weirdest Fan Interaction you've had is there. One that stands out. I get follow. I literally. I've gotten followed by train and Hendrickson actually and I had to fake it off on aspirin. Probably say the same thing that was like one of the last times I took the train. Got Off with with me and my stop. I was like you know to some random hotel to make it. Look like I live there but Yeah I mean just little things like that but nothing too crazy. I mean taking the train still thinking here. Okay taken it. It's just so tough to get an uber from the stadium. You gotta walk the walk like one or two ways and sometimes uber doesn't come in..

"Everyone everyone does. Everyone takes a harder classes. I so like second semester so easy to drink not really care about it. I mean how about Even if they don't play baseball this year breath guard like like he's going to be an whole. Nother you're older like I'm sure he'll be back. But I also wonder how this affects like luxury tax shift because like the red SOx traded mookie right to get under the luxury tax with price so now they under go next door with a whole `nother year. I don't know how it is Mukhi of allowed to go back there like I don't know what's going on with contracts. Schumer just advances giving. It's gotta be like I think it should pause. Yeah has like there can't be another whole new free agent class next year. 'cause you have yeah right? I would think like our coal still has nine years left on his contract. I would think everything just pauses for you own one month style. I don't know what could you imagine this? I was thinking about this show. What if they're not able to play season it gets too late? They scrapped the season and then everything gets better. But it's too late to have a full season. So then they actually take the Astros World Series title and then they actually just the Yankees dodgers for the twenty seven world series. Now because there's enough time to play that series but we can't do anything else that could happen. Let's do that. When would you guys be opposed? So.

What can we do every day? Da Minimum two months. Saying that's minimum right. That's like when we get just two months. How can you do anything for work? Yep but like it's all gonna be about Corona. There's nothing else. It's not going to be news stories two days writing a fake curb. Your enthusiasm episode. I active time that that was a one. Yeah I mean I mean the the people on Spring break right now the worst people ever to exactly we should go in lock down. I don't know why we all country. It seems inevitable. I feel like I feel like that. That's going to happen because what hoboken just did that too right. I'm pretty sure hope what hoboken just went shelter in places when it's called. I think that's what we're headed towards New York City. I'm saying like the whole country. Yeah I know where yeah. Well I mean California just did that right San Francisco. I think isn't shelter in play. Yeah it's it's basically just like it's Cornelie in quarantine for groceries pharmacies and I guess some delivery services be allowed to go to work this. Really nobody's listening. Yeah well and I think more people are yeah. I mean should at times square tonight like GNOME. Is there like that was? That was a moment I was like. Wow this might work. Like people actually listened to this today. That's actually a good thing It's it's not great but Yeah as I mean. We're on the apartment. I don't know if he was in today though but they didn't radio big catchy radio from his home radios all remote with. There's only three home kits that we have for the whole stations. I think Dave has one big cat has one in. Kfc has one but other than that like somebody has to be in studio host the show and then other people can call in to them. He's that's before they changed the whole schedule yesterday or today. I mean that's not great. Yeah really bad. Whatever doing essentially staying bed until about three o'clock when I get hungry for the first time and I go I go make some food and I'm working the whole time and I'm watching. I watched almost every Matthew mcconaughey ROM com that he made when he before he became a really good actor. So I've nail all those down and then thank God. I mean I'm telling this huge like this would be like an episode of survivor. Feel this whole we've after episode one. This is he likes the show but he'd be awful at survivor zoo. This is not what survivor is about. Survivors spread read of a deadly disease in your survivor. You're on a TV show for to win. A million dollars voting people out. This were Jus- quarantined. Isolated in our own home can't leave can't do anything because the deadly virus out there running amok and there's a million dollars up for grabs. Did you just man survivor to make it sound like I guess I did so. I was on Friday at people. Have nothing else to watch like. People got to start engines robber. I'm so I've never looked forward an episode more than I am tonight. This Wednesday I'm saying. Is there a new episode tonight? Everyone's eight o'clock CS. Did you see what they were doing? A big brother contestants. I wrote that blog Germany Brazil and Canada. They just didn't know what was going on. With this virus they were loved. That is insane that they just they were like. Yeah you know what? If one of their family members get sick. We'll tell them but until then we're gonNA keep them isolated and no one's GonNa know and then they're going to walk outside in a month and everyone will be debt like what's happening here. I don't know what the move is there like. I guess it makes sense like they're isolated. Anyway so it's like they're gonNA spread or or catch the virus but yeah it is we are. I see jared. Leto tweeted something. Or it's like he was on a thing we're allies relation to fifteen days technology. He just got out like what the fuck is going on. Guys we're in Tampa. He's an asshole but whatever we're in Tampa two weeks ago and it was just starting to get the news. Who would have thought we fucking his position? Two weeks later boys do we. We share the elevator with talk men and Ford and I would bring up. Show you guys. See the corona virus memo that passing passing tweet out. And they're like no what's that they didn't even know at the time. Like anything who think like all there was a video of Garrett Cole pitching today from one week ago literally felt like it was three months ago one week ago. That guy was just pitching spring training and striking out five guys and now we're looking at. I don't know if baseball get played this year. Juicing you'll need to get all dude now we're talking about not going out there about the issue of possible New York City shut down. Well we can't go outside unless it's for grocery shopping. And I think the APPs talking to douse brain about this last night. But the absolute. He doesn't think they're playing this year. But at the absolute best case scenario. I think we're talking July with no fans the entire year. I don't even think about the social distancing stuff can last twelve eighteen months like that's horrifying to think about. I think eighteen months. I think that's a Shiite CBO. I got to read. I haven't heard any lie model projection the nape log. That I. It's like a big twitter thread one. Obviously you got to take everything with somewhat of a grain of salt because nobody knows for sure but this was like some college ran a model where it's like the only way to truly stop it. If like some waves informed social distancing lasts until the developmental take twelve eighteen months. But it look at look. South Korea like their basketball league is about start up at the end of the month the end because they did a great job granted they did a much better job us but at least they just kill the people who have well. That's north North Korea. Same shift or create you get it. They they still think no one has it because they just murder everyone who gets it. Pretty effective ally really smart yes? We handled it much better and also but like they're people still look. It could come back in South Korea. Part to me is that you can literally just have it and not know. That's what I'm afraid I'm like I'm in the city. So pardon me is like go home with my parents. I'll have more food like not cooped up on par input. It's like what if I have it and I bring it home to my parents who are both over sixty or no hobbes's had the same Same thought like it's it's a weird Just on what to do. Yeah I I would love to go home because I mean I can only lie. I don't actually like I've been starting to think about because this is GonNa last a while. I don't know how long I can survive here like like with food. Like I don't know if I have enough food in my freezer now. I'm eating like a A TV dinner right now for lunch. That's just my lunch last few days. I like if I go home. At least I know my mom's going to cook food and you know it's Jersey. Things are a little more spaced out but I do. How many times in the last couple of days have you had a tingling your throat with like a headache and you like here we go? I I. I'd McCarthy not literally mentally have given myself a call the coughing not like severely but like every now and then like just think of coughing and then I call like I literally have mentally given myself or call. I've given myself corona so many times at some crazy. I'll say what are you like. What are you guys. What do you do if we have Koran? No like your. We've been quarantined for two days now like Morocco.

"Shop now and you get all that summer collection stuff for you. Let's and this show this. So this mission twenty-seven book came out, it's by Mark fines, and Brian Hoke. Big Yankees beat writer as got some crazy stories. Hopefully, we'll have one of these guys on the show some point soon to tell us more. But this a-rod birthday party is what's really apparently brought the entire two thousand nineteen together. It's that's the it wasn't a Rod's like God mode postseason run. It wasn't cici's. Dominant pitching wasn't the bullpen. Demoss Amore tail and Mary. Oh, no. It was just two thousand nine birthday party for a Rod's thirty fourth. I think it was. And it basically brought everyone together the big getting out of it. Jay z apparently was a basic coach for this team. He was with ten twenty four seven. I knew he like was big. But it sound like he was with the team every single day, which is kind of cool, obviously, he sees best friend rock nation all that. But the. Main point, how this David Robertson's just a loser. I hate Davor like we kind of touched on it where, you know, there was the story in the off season that he wanted to cut out people from the playoff shares. We I do think that was say we didn't know how legit that was and stuff. But then you hear this, too. It's like what a I mean that's coming from me. But like if you're if everyone else on the team is jumping into the pool like just like eight like whoever it was sending the book he's going to buy you, a new like don't like fat. He was getting actually upset when they're trying to push him in stuff is like, come on. So the background here, the moment, they get their all their CC and Burnett who seemed to be like these big pranksters, and they were just like yo we're all jumping in the pool with our clothes on at some point at this party. I don't know. Burnett burnett. Seems like a good guy party with. He seems like a it seemed like he he throat great barbecue. But deep barbecue would quickly get like. Outta hand. Yeah. Like off the rails costs might be called and Pernet. They were trying to, you know, plan this whole thing, and eventually a-rod I gotta jump in the pool which was like the shocked everybody with everything on, which is such a rich guy move, like, dude, if we're jumping into pool the other, and we've closed on taking my phone outsing. Oh, like on, I don't even know if Joe but in the pool that point, but I mean, they all jump in with everything on and everyone's in the pool like all the wives all the players. And then there's just David Robertson. So here's what they say, David Robertson was balking. He was actually upset. This is from Kevin long Kevin long. He was very upset..

"Everyone could see like your relief with that home run and everyone the dugout with but like it must be so fucking doing in April and may just like here that where anytime you strike out. You just you're like someone's going to say that even in spring training every time you know, MIR Burwood hit. That's all they talk about and took it, and I'm not paying attention to it, but it's just repetitive and don't get me wrong. Grades good guy. But like I want him to succeed, but the guy can't stay away from the injury bug. But it's like let's play whatever happens happens. It's a part of the game, and it's fun competition. It brought out the best in us. And, you know, may the best man win lucky. I got that chance. Birdie just kinda hurt his foot or whatever. So it's part of it. You know, I wish there was more of these competitions and baseball, like some of these younger guys getting opportunities over guys that have had a definite long time, but it's good for the game. So when you come over from Saint Louis last year, very much like a diamond in the rough so to speak, and no one really knows a ton about you, but get over to New York you hit three thirty fifteen home runs when the Ke's I traded for you to casper men, or anyone from the analytics department come up to you and say, like this is why we took a chance on you. Yeah. Once I kind of, you know, started hitting a little bit better and a lot of the guys like all right. A little guys are constantly walking around locker room on the field and stuff. And they started coming out there with you. I was one of the guys that scouted, you like we were scouting you like for, like two months. And I was like, what's like cool. I'm playing in some random city, and tripling the Moines Iowa or something like that. And just by four Yankee scouts at that game like, and I had no idea. Gone out the night before three in the morning. So before that game, we see that trait. And like I mean at the time like no one note, no one in New York, like has ever heard of Luke, what we just think because I think it was also international signing bonus money, which Cashman loves to people thought that was the main part, and then you find out you've been just it on their radar for three months. They've been waiting for that. Perfect time is pretty Kuhlman, and especially in those guys start coming up to you. And, you know, they're telling you all these stats kinda why don't even know. But I mean that's what the game started into, and what year all those guys kinda give you confidence outside of the stats that, you know, it's, it's pretty cool, and it's crazy. How far these computers have gone with baseball. And are you more of numbers guy or you feel? It's I think it's, it's harder for a lot of I mean I like love video. I watched all the time. But like. When I like, let's say I face like like, I'm gonna go off of what I've seen in like you faced him enough. Yeah. I I'm not going to dive down into the stuff. And like a lot of us like to look at their previous starts. Kinda see, you know, what kind of pitches we're working for them. But then I mean like the guy could be a fastball slider gun slaughters on. So he's throwing more changes came, so it's, it's something you have to pay attention. And it's a feel thing during the game. So. You still got to be a baseball player in watch the game. And you know, kind of figure out what's going on. Because baseball is that game we're supposed to fail at times. I feel that people always talk about the pressure of playing in New York..

"I'm gonna I was gonna say none of them like our tation if Suming that the pitching like this right now, you know, there with Paxton healthy five good starters, plus Severino. Montgomery still lasagna and was on you. Right. I don't really consider. He's not someone I trust reluctant still guy. You could start though in random guy. Yeah. But he I would take those guys over him if if John was fifth starter then. Yeah, I'd be look which he is right now. But if we have started for an extended period of time right now, definitely working for a starter like one of those guys listed. But now, I don't think they should be looking for a start line. They're like we said, they're they're going to have so many guys come back. It's going to be like those other deadline, acquisitions, I don't think tank will be that active at the trade deadline unless they are still this hurt. What whatever does done for the year. And you know, these guys are healthy. Yeah. Then maybe, but I don't wanna give up because none of those guys are, you know, ace level. I mean, Madison Bumgarner not even anymore is necessarily frontline guys. So I wanna be going crazy with what the pack them. Offering is Sanchez interesting. He does have injuries in his history. Stroman just the big game pitcher. I do like that. Why this Aaron Boone definitively says Mike talk when will not be the casualty for Clint. Frazier. Yeah. So who is? Pitcher other raid, maybe could be a pitcher..

"Gary came back and Gary's shown himself. We're gonna have a whole Gary seven and a few seconds. But what we did lose Paxton that that's tough. But the sounds like max of three starts but Clint is back Monday. He had a rehab his second rehab game today. Rain. Out, of course. But it does sound like he's gonna be back with a team Monday. Which means see Mike talk on even though he went out with a nice home run that I, but I soon that will be end of him. Stan returns to batting practice. This week Hicks extended spring training starts in Tampa this week and dis Didi out of nowhere has finished his throwing program as rehab games in two weeks, which means he might be back sometime in June. That's great. I was shocked by that. I actually stocked. I I was still in. He was such an after thought in my head where I was thinking we were looking at at least July, maybe August break for sure. Yeah. Yeah. And to see him. I mean, he's going to beat. He might beat who's going to be back. I'm going to be judged back for sure you might who knows. Who knows what Hicks is doing all odu degree? He's going to be a lot of these guys back would which is awesome. They can use him healthier healthier. They get more reinforcements are on the way. I the only depressing news out of all that was that. There's no update on Aaron judge nothing. Yeah. I mean, it's post all-star break for him. I mean, that's just and well, the also the Severino news wasn't great. But honestly didn't expect anything other than that. When they said post all-star break, just you know, he's got you just figure shit. There's no rush right now. The rotation seems to be okay it stable at the moment. Assuming package back in two starts. But yeah, judge nothing. I mean, I don't even think that period has happened yet where ill it's like he has to do nothing for four weeks, or whatever we're not even at those four weeks, not even close to more weeks for that. So the Stanton news is better. We finally got something on him. I'm concerned about him. I just feel like. I don't know what it's a new injury. Every time. He's injury prone. Normally, I don't know. We're walking down a dangerous path with him. Now. You know, it's good to clint's gonna be back, and Gary is backing Gary at a point right now where I mean, he's in maybe the most locked in he's ever been. But obviously the bad news the end the twenty sixteen right? He's like that. He's hitting everything right now. Like just scalding everything like one fifteen off the bat. But injury was the worst news the come out of this weekend. Friday paxon's pitching, he doesn't look good. He's he's Ling. What's the word? Laboring laboring was the I looking for. He was laboring through three innings sixty five pitches. Just wasn't throwing strikes. He said enough could push off. And he says that he has his lingering knee injury, which they've known about and eight sounds really bad to me like a lingering injuries, just bad. I don't they say maxed restarts. I know we just gonna is going to vanish in three starts do is rest. The the thing here formation installation. Also is a weird. That's like such a cover for everything you could say formation for anything, and it could lead to different routes, but not good. Not good. I've had a lingering injury for like ten years basically made. Sometimes just it hurts. Sometimes it doesn't. I don't know. What I mean? It's better to be is his lower body than his arm for sure by he's at other guy where he's been injury prone is a tire career, but I think all things considered. I'm not super worried about this injury. Because like I said, it is a driver p the need in the arm and three weeks. It sounds like a lot. But you know, it's probably three starts max. I mean missing a position player for three weeks or so different. That's probably like twenty games. I mean three starts if you can just win. If you want one of those three starts, you know, there's no.

"And play games with that. In my dad, in the beginning would watch his swing, make sure we were swinging properly. And eventually he felt that we had it down pretty good. You know, you didn't have to watch. I remember him saying when I was older that he'd come home from work. He was a fireman in San Francisco for thirty years, and he'd here that pounding of the tennis ball against the rafters. And you know, give me a headache sometimes and but it made him laugh because I was there taking, you know, probably five hundred to one thousand swings day. I just absolutely loved it. Right. And you know you, you were the word just slapping because your dad knew something about the game. He would look at your mechanics. Tell us a bit about him. How did he know so much about baseball? Well, my dad was a minor league player and he was. Originally drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers before World War Two. He got hit in the head his first year in his eyes progress, no helmets. Those days is progressively got worse. And he eventually played for Cleveland and Oklahoma City and then was traded to the cardinals and played under Johnny Keane in Houston, where he met my mother and they got married after the season. He was very good hetero, very fine fielding. First baseman, and his career was shortened. And so he put it all after the war served four years in the service in the navy at Pearl Harbor and a ship repair unit played on the US navy team which played the US army team and army air corps Musial STAN Musial and forty. Five played with my father. Ted Williams was playing on the on on the teams a marine team. So there was all these ex. These these major leaguers playing this league were entertaining the troops basically. Yes. So it's clear you had talent, but it was all of that practice from somebody who knew what he was doing that no doubt, hone your skills, you were drafted by the St Louis cardinals organization and were a prized prospect. A lot was expected of you and it took years for you as you ride in the book to really get your stride as a hitter. And partly that was, you know, Justin mechanics and learning pitches, but a lot of it was emotional. How do your head get in the way? Well, I always, I describe my fragility in my emotional fragility. I mean, you're a high idea, come out of high school. You're a star in your little area. You grew up and I grew up with the baby boomers and there's lots of kids to play ball with and all of a sudden, my first spring training there, seven hundred kids in camp and there's only eight teams, and I know I'm going to make the team. I got a bonus signing bonus of thirty thousand which was unheard of for forty second round. Pick, but it just the big adjustment is you play two games a week and and in in summer league and back in those days in high school. And now you're playing, I believe it was a hundred and twenty eight game schedule in the minor leagues, something like that. And you're playing every day and you're not gonna hit five hundred like you did in high school. I hit two fifty six and a ball. I had to sixty AA the next year. And you know, it was tough. It was depressing in indigo and slumps in these your first experience with slumps and it's all a learning process in your headed eighteen year old kid and you don't know how to handle you. Throw helmets. You throw bats kick dirt, and you know, and you got coaches trying to tell you to calm down and you gotta learn to play this game on even kill, and it's all part of the process. That's what the minor leagues are about, but it, you know, it takes a long time and everybody's different. It took me a lot longer. Tell us the story of the first time you met guys razzing you in the stands, some college kids in a league game. It was. I was eighteen my first year in ball, making five hundred dollars a month and only getting paid during the season. And no, you went home and you didn't get paid, and we're played a doubleheader very windy game in Saint Petersburg, Florida and the Florida state league and was a pop up. And I dropped it and you know, to me a drop a pop up publicist it was and there was some college kids that had come down to watch the game and never sitting over on the first base side. And I guess they read that I was the big prospect and they just started writing me incessantly. And as a result, I got tighter and tighter, and I got matter and matter and I didn't acknowledge them because that's asking for trouble. I had enough sense to realize that, but they were relentless and it turned out that another play later in the in the second game, I just made another botch on easy, throw. It was obviously they got under my skin. And when the when the game was over, I ROY Matik was my manager. At it's eighteen. He calls me in the office and obviously he's gonna tell me, you can't let you know he's gonna give me the lessons, and I just start crying and he just had his ROY was a cigarette smoking a cigarette in his hand and bear in his other hand. And he just I'm ever going home jeeze and. There. I was completely after, you know, all that pent up emotion inside and it just came out in tears. I think you're right at one point that one of your coaches thought you needed to be away from your dad a little bit. I mean, he was such an important influence in your life. Was he? I don't know. A challenge. A burden was difficult with him to what when the cardinal cardinals were scouting. Me, dad negotiated my contract. They got a sense of the strength of the power of my father. Bob Kennedy. There was able team Modesto in the California state league. There was three ball teams, Cedar Rapids, Saint Pete in the Florida state league and California state league. Bob Kennedy kept me out of the California stately which he filled. I was ready to play in because that was the top able Lee. And he put me in the middling of Florida state league, which was a toughly. And he told me years later, he wanted the kind of cut the apron strings from my father. So. So there you go Bob Kennedy being a real influence and on my career. Do you think you needed to cut the strings from your father? Yes, no question. It was the right thing to do. Because dad and my brother played in the California state lady in dad came to all his games just whenever he could, and that would have drove me crazy. Gary had a different relationship with my father than I did with him. And yes, it was the right thing to do to get me away from him and get me to stand up on my own two feet. Was he hypercritical? You felt like you just couldn't please him when he coast all through little league and he was just wonderful. And the parents and the kids were were all benefited from his instruction and was really terrific with the kids. But once I got into high school, he was so petrified that a coach would ruin me, and it was never words. He lost control, and that's when things started to get a little dicey between a million him. He would always watch whenever he can't. He was a fireman he worked twenty four hours off forty eight yet two days off. So he would be at every practice in highschool watching him. And it was like. You know, the central scrutinize Irvine over from Frank Zappa's Joe's garage album. Maybe it was just like forever watching, and I would feel that it was like a shroud over me and I would come home on pins and needles. I didn't know. Would you know get laid into or would smile and praise me was kind of a tough situation and that continue to near major league career to, right? Yes. Well, I'm I'm sure he was a great guy and he died in nineteen Ninety-two, right? He did ironically one year after my retirement. So it was too bad. He could live longer. I wanna talk about playing first base. First base is a natural place for collisions, right? I mean, when there's a ground ball, you're there to catch a throw from the infielder and hopefully it's on target, but it might be into the path of the runner who may not see because the runners busting it down the line, not necessarily looking at the throw when you could see that was going to happen. The ball was going to be into the path of the runner. Did you have techniques for either warning the runner or trying to avoid getting hurt or hurting the runner. Well, number one, the runner can't run inside the baseline. He's got to be on the chalk. So a throw into into him, or I got a stretch towards home plate. I feel pretty confident that I'm not going to get hit on. It's up to me to make sure that I stride in fair territory towards the ball I stretch excuse me and only time I was ever scared when I was older and on my last year in Cleveland, Oakland raider running back to play for Kansas City. All American of Bo Jackson hit a ground ball shortstop, and the throw was down the line into him. And I heard him running like it was like a herd of buffalo. I'm not exaggerating at never had that experience before, and I played against some big guys. He was running so fast, and he was such a big strong guy that when I I remember I cringed when I caught the ball and just in hopes. That he wouldn't clip me on my left shoulder and he missed me. Thank goodness. I made sure I stroked up the line, but that's the only time ever in my career. If the throws too far up the line, you make a judgment. First base was a part of me, and that's also extension of knowing where the runner is. I have good peripheral vision. I have good sense of where the runner is. Can I come off the bag instead of stretching? Can I just come off the bed and get the ball, make the tag instead of staying on the bag? I was able to do that, and it was just all second nature to me. The easy part of the game for me was fielding if hitting could have been as easy as fielding. I woulda hit four hundred. The other thing about playing first base. It's the one place where there are a lot of there's time to converse with an opposing player player. Baserunners gets on and you know, I mean the pitcher and catcher, I mean the hitter and catcher near each other, but they're kind of busy, the catchers, getting the signs when you're with a runner. At first, you're often waiting for the pitcher to get ready and you can see there's chatter, is it friendly? Were there guys who try and use that to get in your head? Or would you try to get an other players heads. I was a chatterbox and for one reason, I would ask the hitters how they felt the plate and if a hitter would there's, it was just the beginning when the old days you wouldn't ever talk to the opposing player during a game before before game and BP that was no, it was the enemy. And that was starting to change in my era, started to change in the sixties in the seventies even got it advanced further. But I always ask, you know, guy came to the. First-base how do you fill the plate and if they start, you know, I don't feel so good that other of man, I feel great. Well, I'm in, I'm in a hot streak. He'll well, I would rela- that information to your pitcher, Rick? Yes, and actually the pitching staff and are the pitching coach, Rick Monday at a funny story, Rick. Money's a very dear friend now does radio for the dodgers you go flying into Saint Louis Hernandez on first base, we better all hid doubles. They wouldn't have to talk. He turned and his new memoir is called, I'm Keith Hernandez after a break. He'll tell us what he doesn't like about the game today at about what it was like on the set of Seinfeld. Also, Kevin Whitehead reviews a new album from trumpeter Adam Farrell. I'm Dave Davies, and this is fresh air.
