Dinesh and Michelle Malkin Reflect on His Visit to Oberlin College

"Guys, I'm really happy to welcome to the podcast a well an old friend of mine. And somebody I admire greatly, Michelle malkin, a nationally syndicated columnist. And Michelle, thanks for coming on, delighted to have you. If there's one word I would use to describe you, it is fearless. You have proven to be someone who will take on tough issues will not back down. It's cost you dearly in some respects. I know that the young America's foundation, for example, you and I were both regular speakers for ya and they sort of pulled a rug out from under you which I think is atrocious. But thanks for coming on Michelle. Let's talk for a moment if we can about how we first met because you were a student. You were dating a young man who invited me to come speak at oberlin college and if I remember you from those days you were actually very quiet and you were a little reserved and so to see you your career blossom over the years and the boldness with which you speak. I mean, it's just been an amazing and a wonderful thing for me to see and talk a little bit about what you remember from your side about the time dinesh first game to speak at oberlin. Well, I'll never forget it. And I think a lot of the career that I've had and certainly the boldness with which I've approached my career is your fault. I was in oberlin college, Berkeley of the Midwest in the late 1980s, early 1990s and you had just come out with your terrific book, illiberal education, which highlighted so much of the liberal orthodoxies and excesses, particularly when it came to multiculturalism and separate dorms and all of this nonsense. The ditching of western civilization requirements, I don't have to tell you, you wrote the book. And my husband, who then was my boyfriend, Jesse invited you to come and speak and it was awesome, Finney chapel, all of the triggering that you did, not only of the students, but many of the faculty who stood up and how did you. I remember it as clear as day. And that really ignited my determination to speak for myself rather than allow all of these radical elites to appropriate my political identity and assume what I should think and believe based on my outward appearance and my gender and ethnic

Why Do We See Anti-Intellectualism in the Church?

"I often talk my nor my bugbear is People who claim to be intellectual who have a philosophical bias against faith. It's wrong it's a philosophical bias. It is illogical but on the other side there are people in in the world of faith who have somehow in a knee jerk way adopted a bias against the things of the mind against the intellect. There are people christians. There almost nas ticks Who don't want to hear about reason they just wanna be kind of floating in the ether. as though faith and reason are opposed to each other. So tell us elijah stevens. You've made the film send prove. Why do you see that in the church. Anti-intellectualism i think that happened. During the great awakenings. It was not a part of the church until like people like finney came along and said look to reach the frontiers. We need to make this stuff. Simple emotional end. God use that but it stripped out the mind and so in the american wait wait wait so finney in the nineteenth century during the second great awakening right. He kind of emphasized. Let's keep it simple. Let's not go into the intellect because we're trying to reach the people on the frontier. I mean he actually made a strategic choice to do that. Yes and that kind of split. The church part where you have high intellectualism on one side and low focus on the power of spirit and then high focus on the power of the spirit and high emotionalism. And it's like there's this divide but that hasn't always been the

Actually that sense relevant when talking about software developers from rob garner. Who said this is a great show. I found the discussion about view. Emblazoned very positive with the usual competitive comparisons. And that's a great thing. I really enjoyed learning blazer especially like the idea of being able to code both the front and the back in the same language and every only recently found out about this Bri th on allows you to call python in the browser so that's browser python on sort of the same way that blazer a lousy closely sharpen the browser as an instructor about to teach python flask in addition to blazer. It's nice to be able to offer my students. The ability to learn to see sharp approach a node with javascript. Front end approach and now a fully python front and back in approach. That's really cool. Rob the same language prenton back. Three different ways with these three courses can really get to compare and contrast the different approaches and gain a better understanding. Why frameworks designed the way they are once again. A great show and super thought-provoking and you know what is cool but that set of languages right c. Sharp statically typed very classic programming environment. Python is dynamic insert a lot less syntax very very simple way to go about your certain things and then you have javascript which is also dynamic but as its own quirks purchase. The thing so right you really are giving them an array of flavors of programming while having that sort of symmetry so i really appreciate very cool and coffee. Musical is on its way to you. Each user custodial solutions as originally envisaged by both satochi and how finney in twenty ten also worked very well and our user friendly but the user is then beholden to the custodian. Here is a table comparing thunder to those two more. Prominent layer. twos lightning and custodial. The main problem with custodial. Bitcoin is that gold already tried that strategy and after a short while people stopped caring about the underlying gold and cared more about the custodians ledger. I e the custodians opinion of who had how much money state chains are another layer to with very interesting and unique properties namely they do not require layer one bites to onboard each new user. But they do require that every individual. Ut akzo in use in the state chain be on onboard via layer one which is better than lightning but still problematic. Snark do not help with scale ability at all because they do not solve the so called data availability problem. There's no way to use the snark to recover the sequence of events that led to its creation. There's also no way to audit the snark to make sure that it is working correctly without also having all of the original data on hand thus snark do not help with scale ability in are probably only useful as an enhancement to p v level security be a new framework an old critique of scaling via blocksize increase ran as follows. It suggested that capacity increases were naive unprincipled undisciplined and they would lower the quality of the whole network. In contrast enforcing property rights i e enforcing the one megabyte block. Size limit might seem cruel but overall this tough love is the only way to build a reliable sustainable high quality system that critique was accurate. And i don't mean to overthrow it but i do want to change it slightly instead of a train one hundred percent clean versus one. Hundred percent overcrowded. I would rather people think of a situation where the same at vehicle has different sections first class business class coach etcetera. In that model the passengers have a different experience in many important ways but they also have some things in.

A Review Of The Long Walk, Chapters 9-18

"The long walk continues with only sixty. Walkers remaining geared is determined to make it to freeport or he'll see his mother and girlfriend jan more walkers get their tickets and the boys continue their discussions as physical and mental exhaustion weigh on them eventually. The long walk enters massachusetts and only three boys remain gary mic varieties and stebens. Only one will be the last walker standing but even so at what price victory. Nice day were in this section of the book and one of the things we talked about last episode is how we were a little disappointed that there wasn't a lot more world building going on yeah King seemed to be very vague as to what sort of relived these characters were in boys going on. We got the sense that things weren't great but not all of the details and in this one. There's a lot more of that world building we're looking for. Yeah it definitely satisfied my craving for those details. I still don't know that it was enough for my my modern sensibilities if you will I wanted to know what was going on. Outside of the walk and king still doesn't really reveal that but he gives us just a little bit more of a taste. Oh those are so delicious. Yeah each one of them is pretty great. The fact there's now thirty first day of april. Yeah that was the first one in this section. I was like whoa and you know. We talked about the dark tower. There were times early on. We're like boy. That's a weird little editing mistake. At first i thought well maybe april thirty. One is an editing mistake but then there were a couple more came shortly thereafter. That you're like. Oh kings doing something here. Yeah yeah there were fifty one states. When i saw that my immediate question was what is that fifty for state. I mean it could be anything is is it. Puerto rico is his canada. I don't know like it could be so many things it could be half of. Mexico is the fifty first state. It's not really important to the story. But it would be kinda cool to have one of those jr token style maps or like the the dark tower style maps that shows the world of the long walk and the path that they walk. Yep and then you can see like now. There's this you know. East pennsylvania and west pennsylvania. Yeah you're not even thinking big enough jay. Maybe like the western eight states all disappeared or were destroyed and so then they picked up nine states that we don't have today and not not just one new one. What do you think of that. Yeah or maybe california finally broke into five pieces. Resold alaska back to the russians for for a net total of one game state. Yeah and cut off. Florida like bugs. Bunny does in that. Famous jif yup. Yeah there were other interesting facts. That that Apparently there were german air raids on the east coast of the united states. And there's clearly has been some kind of takeover. The major seems to be the figurehead leader or commander of this Of the united states. So i'm guessing some sort of military coup but somebody says in the old days before the change and the squads when they were still millionaires like basically went before before a lot of wealth was redistributed to who knows who knows in what way but clearly this is not the world that king lived through when he was writing this story. Right the most intriguing one was this idea that world war two was different in how it played out so there's talks about german raids on the east coast. That occurred that people were afraid of and then later on they talk about the provo governor who is a war hero. He led a raid on a german nuclear base in santiago in nineteen fifty three. So yeah this is definitely not the world that is just hey our world bit in the future. This is a total man in the high castle. Style alternate reality or maybe even a father callahan like slipping through alternate versions of of the universe or of the of the world making this whole story. Kind of dark tower finney.

And I'll car manufacturers out of the game are there There's gonna know there's I've heard that there's a least three tomorrow. That's less than normal. A Deep Dive Into Rudy Gobert After the Jazz Lose To Denver

"Talk about Rudy. Gobert. What? What do we want to know about mr. Gaubert because I thought before today and obviously today is Sunday. I thought before the day that he was running away with the defensive player of the year award. And then today happened today happened. I would not go as far as running away with the defensive player wage. I thought he was running away. I thought it was a significant gap between him and everybody else. So I totally understand why you would say that their top five and defense coming into town today. They're really really good team Utah. They are arguably playing better before today than anybody in the NBA just point blank. Especially now that the Lakers have hit like off a bit of a bit of a malaise having said that I'm still saying Anthony Davis Ford Prince of player of the year because they've number one defense and he's the one the keys the number one defense in the NBA off. He's by far the most versatile defender in the NBA Rudy I think is a reasonable like honestly probably would be second for me right now Myles Turner has a case sneaky class that I've been advocating as much as I can Larry Nance would probably be in my top five right now. He is the whole reason that the Cavs have a reasonable defense. Yep. Right now a top-10 defense, but I digress nonetheless Rudy gobert has been very very good for the Utah Jazz this year and I thought that Utah's games this week. We're kind of a perfect encapsulation of the Rudy gobert experience against Dallas. He was the reason that they just come holy month and utterly annihilated the Mavericks in both of those games and I watched the first one close cuz I bet on Dallas because Utah was without Donovan Mitchell was without a favors and Dallas was getting back Dorian finney-smith was getting back to like Powell. I thought that they'd take that energy and catch you too on the back end of a back-to-back and be kind of run away with that game and that absolutely one hundred percent was the wrong side to be on and in large part. It was because of the incredible grass. City that Rudy gobert holds as a pick-and-roll offensive threat, he is completely obliterated kristaps porzingis in that in those two games like butterwood obliterated him like wipe them off the face of the Earth on both ends. He averaged 23 points and 16 rebounds. He had like three blocks. He had a couple of steals. He was dead thing that people who are Jazz fans and that yell from the rooftops about Rudy. Gobert. He was everything in those two games that people say about Rudy being like a top-12 impact player in the NBA. You'll hear sometimes in this game today against Denver Nikola jokic made him look like a parking cone on defense and

"You talk about the rigor of this fall session versus in the spring where it was kind of sprung on you. And you got a Webinar last week in one of the big topics was regression. What regression have you seen as a parent? And as a teacher, are you trying to make up that gap and address that regression from the spray as a parent? We've seen a lot of regression mostly behavior with our kids once again with our six old behaviors, his biggest obstacle autistic and always has severe behavior issues with aggression, and then with my hanger one might urging year old behavior wasn't always ill with him. He's severely delayed because of epilepsy but his behavior once again he's thirteen. So that is a factor, not a great time independently, and so his behaviors have increasingly become worse. Way More anxious. He's always said the tendencies now they are through and him in his brother clash constantly now because they're both kind of fighting same central issues and the fact that we're so close the other all the time because risk we've been very tight knit and like my daughter is nineteen leaves to go somewhere might thirteen year olds is. The ripped wasp back through the door and so we had a lot of the behaviors that our biggest regressions inquiry. We've been fortunate with museum, First Grade, teacher both about a first grade level, we've been able to really work with 'em. I've been fortunate because I know the curriculum of where they need to be able to use some of those strategies and I worked very closely with both their teachers over the summer. So our traditions been behavior not having close. We haven't had eight years since March we haven't interventions so we're filling it there as a teacher. Filling the gap. You know we're figuring it out as we go. I will say like for me personally once I'm regular ed with little ones but I have been talking tourist teachers at our school. We're is seeking for my classroom even interested in. Others that are there and we were talking about little about the one on one in the interventions for with in I know for me like, I've done way more one on one sessions already with two weeks in. I've had that time to spend with some of my kids I seen the larger gaps and I'm really working to kind of figure out where the fall so that those kids are ready to move on in the challenging I'm able to give them those resources and those that are falling high able to kind of focus in on their gaps and get some small group intervention and taking the parents working with me. The only way will be open work with teachers because the kids really they can't do it independently right? They're they're young don't know, and so even if it's not parents having somebody, there is a lot of older siblings you know during their break from class or helping younger siblings just having the or to work with us to fill the gap and be as creative as possible. We've sent home different like I make different letter boards for work building. Waste at home some Magic Plato so that they have won it gave him a good experience in two. Now they have some hands on something to keep their hands busy when the technology is. been playing with their plato. You know we've been trying to send home tolls. We've made more Finney, hoeing next week things engaged. It's at home, but they're not just staring at a computer or they're just not pencil and paper, but they're getting some of that creative outlet to keep them engaged in wanting to learn I think the biggest obstacle is you know especially with young ones and I think even. With Sec Kiddos is you want your kids to once word right? You want them to have that passion to learn new things and not get so frustrated and it's at balance of making it fun engaging but still giving the curriculum is filling the gaps they need. So I just think everyone has succeeded together box. You know we're we're learning the go like we've been in a weekend team and I work. To our meeting yesterday talking about different ways, we can better engage them different things. We could send home that the kids could use more independently.

Can you just talk briefly about the role of teaching in your life in terms of how it impacts your work? When I first started teaching creative writing and poetry, I was warned. Be careful. You'll never right again. Said Okay I will be careful. And yet I have found. This most honorable art and act. Has provided so many moments of inspiration and work, because one of the things that I do when I teach is I do my own assignments. So, I. Have this you know if I. Give a writing assignment in class. The students look up and they see me scrambling along with them. What are you doing? I have a point coming I'm trying to catch it like you are, and I think that's really really important To not to yes, to be the instructor in the classroom, but also to be the student in the classroom and one of the reasons I love to visit classrooms of all kind, because I'm always curious soul, and I'm always ready to learn something else about the act of writing the art of poetry, and then how to come before you on a night like this in communicate what I feel, and what? "There particular forms of poetry that you enjoy the most. I write mainly in free verse, but. I, love taking a form and sought up sort of Changing. Kinda been doing that. My entire life I love Penn tunes. I, I love the meter of align. But I really I think more free verse more attractive to words. In poetry and inwards, and beginning words and things like that, but I do love pontoons, and in this last book there is something sort of sonnet esque. That I had a lot of. Playing within it took. Over a hundred drafts of a poem called plunder. which is about the last state of the nation? Address that George? Bush made to this country. Exactly. Can you tell us more about and this isn't a quotes making a plan for words words. Maybe. This is back to the Toni cade bar. The can tell you so many things. She taught me, but in the workshop. One day was my turn to present. And this is a hope Students up there listening really carefully this. So I read this plan that I thought was really cool. and. She said everybody was commenting on how cool it was and she says. Hey Finney. So you right pretty so what? What's the plan. Plan cannot just right pretty. No. You have to have a plan. You have to have a plan. And so that was the time in my life when I started thinking Beyon- The SORTA prettiness of language to what language could do in where I wanted to take me. So the follow on that question, this is maybe just like a A. Zero on something in there. What do you say to those who believe that political poetry is in fact, not our country. I don't I. Don't really have to answer that I mean I. You know you can. You can spend your. You can spend your time in the arena. Answering ridiculous things, or you can just do your work. And and know that the history of poetry is ripe and and lush with. Political ideas and it's not so much what you write about, but how you write about it that matters so much and so i. don't spend a lot of time with in my very first. Book. Welcome to the program. Oh, thank you very much, Michael. I notice I'm appalled by the number of drivers that do not have their headlights on whether the wind chill. Also when it's hazing what have you? I mean, I've even been on the bridge where the Hayes is down to the deck, the big issues in the middle lane, wipers going and no lights on unbelievable. It's unbelievable. Now, I am going to give it. Well. First of all, let me tell you that is against the law Tigers are on then you have to have your lights on that's a law in the state of California. That's right. That's right. But some people don't know that that is there's two things going on one. Do you know that there's a loophole in the law? No, the loophole is if you don't have your your wipers on permanently like using intermittent, then then the law doesn't apply to you. Oh my gosh. Silliest thing I've ever heard I'm with you that needs to change. And the other thing is I think a lot of people now have their lights on all the time where it's automatic.
