Interview With Danny Cannon On Gotham

"Cave. Bite has one of the show runners of Gaza. Danny can. Talk to me at the beginning of season one. What was the visual sensibility in aesthetic that you are trying to get across in Gotham as opposed to the other Batman related projects or you just trying to make this totally different? Well, no, no no. Completely different because you know I wanted to fit into into this great cannon, the work that's been gone for seventy five years. but at the same time might make it contemporary. And at the same time, it's twenty years from from Batman basically. So. We talked about a few things myself in the rights and when we first met and it seemed like everything we had in that first meeting as played out which is. New York in the seventies was was a a brilliant dangerous time like light seventies. Not just because of all the graffiti on trains and the rundown and Harlem, and all these dangerous places that you could go to his fooling down places but culturally, it was really good music films. It was a hip hop star. Know. New Wave. Everything. Would it culturally it was really great. We talked about that law but the talks about the Kennedy in. London. And and the have and the have nots and that industrial revolution age and. That something I wanted to bring into the fact that city that hasn't been gentrified yet is still locked in the past and probably falling down a little bit. So all the sets of design slightly askew with like slightly going down you know like the whole thing is crumbling been held up with good and things like that, and then the last thing we spoke about was rim fairy tales and and the fact that as adult fairy tale element to. To honor the comic book idea of it. And so those three elements thrown together. And then must is to keep your feet on the ground. So it's it feels really reliable. It seems like it also has a color, its own color Palette jet texture that we haven't really seen in other comic book adaptations to now I mean that was just because with all of those influences coming in there are certain gels you caught through. There was a contemporary look we didn't do. We could do a test now bicycler whereas like is this often cars that cars this governed governor it's the same thing as colors and. Trying to get the crews taste and and and the performance tastes into that same thing. It's it's good and it was easier than we thought. You know it's it's quite. Nobody knows what period is if feels comfortable because it feels very familiar. That yet, but nothing sticking out you to to portray that. Theatrical reality that was one of the series executive producers and Danny Cannon, whose asked if Gotham itself as a character in this without doubt. Yeah. Without doubt that's why the show that was very much. Bruno's intentions had to be a character and all the designing I did was was was on that. Was myself in the production. drew for a long time just to get I found myself. It wasn't just drawing the new buildings that wanted to insert into New York will take away the glass buildings out of New York. Older Dickensian style attended the century English buildings It it I I. Drew Skies, and that was I don't know where that came from US listened to music and I'd start during stormy skies everywhere and I was like. That's it that stat stats when I got it was when I I put stormy sky on everything. Now, Gotham is a huge hit on twitter. How do feel about beating every other show on twitter are really Fila get on twitter? Obviously doesn't need me. Yeah right yeah. I think that's wonderful I. You know to be talked about Israeli sometimes even better than watched I think it would be I. I. It's Great. As long as I can promise those nice people that allowed that to happen that the show gets better and better, and there's plenty to talk about are there any character storylines you would like to bring in that you haven't brought in already? We have a great relationship with DC and we sit down with them constantly and Ask about origins of various characters and. It's amazing. How many don't have Origins. Many characters just turned up his bad guys you know in the and so. It's really. We feel on to be able to go back in this. Great. Legacy and and and UH. site. Okay. So how did they turn up like that? How did they have? So. Yeah. Now we're having a lot of fun.

Complicating the Narrative Around Issues of International and Transracial Adoption

"If can give us a little bit more background on yourself and how you got to. The position of being kind of an advocate for a fellow adoptees Wait on US share. So I was adopted from China in one, thousand, nine, hundred, Ninety, seven, when I was three years old, and I was adopted by two wonderful. White adoptive parents and raised in the Midwest And my parents I. Give them a lot of credit for. Really trying to keep a lot of my cultural roots I went to Saturday morning Chinese school with my dad for language and dance and I. Remember growing up. My parents subscribe to women of China magazine, so that I would see women who looked like me in the media which does not happen that much in mainstream US media. But it was really in college when I started to process my racial identity and adopt the identify more I took a class taught by an adoptee professor my first year. That really turned everything. I knew about adoption upside down I think the the common narrative that we. Like to believe about adoption. Is that Adoption provides homes for children in need and gives children, too loving people who can't have children or don't yet. Have Children But. In my class, we really talked about the history of transracial and transnational adoption, but Has Roots in Australia and an attempt at cultural genocide and. Just a lot of the different layers of trafficking and coercion that happened to frequently and so when I was processing districts like how I bring this troubling history of adoption and merge it with. My experiences and what it means to be a part of this system in have my family created in this way I really I really feel lucky that I was in Minnesota when I was doing. All of this processing, because Minnesota has one of the highest number of adoptees per capita in. The country and I learned a lot from. The Korean adoptees of The generation before. Mine and I started looking at adoptee blogs and. Fila even all started looking at Asia angry Asian man just A. Really trying to piece together how I fit in Asian American history and adoption adoption, history and After I had really grappled with a lot of the hard things I think that. I really wanted to become a voice for adoptees who are often silenced and when they. Give voice to some of these more negative sides of adoption and. Bring to light. The issues of. Trafficking or just complicate the narrative that sometimes it's not this heroin decision that a birth mother makes to give their child better life. Sometimes they have no. And what it means to. Have that. Profound loss. As a starting point in life, and what it means to carry that loss of family country, language culture. Throughout the life course and so I think that I think yeah, my my goal. Is Not to like add manish adoption and condemn it and people who've been involved, but just to bring him or nuanced and complete picture to adoption than currently exists.

A look at recovery techniques for the athlete

"Then we can really get a little bit more out of out of our recovery and start to enjoy that sense of wellbeing. So if you want to improve your recovery this year, you don't need to start from scratch Derek's advice to get recovery. Right. In two thousand nineteen focus on maximizing the benefits of the three things you probably already do. If we look at sleep you're going to go to sleep. So you might as well go to sleep at the same time each night, you multiple sleep in a room that a little bit colder, you're going to take a shower. So you might as well ease into that shower, and and and drop down that temperature a little bit more. So it continues to cool down your core temperature and you're going to be wearing socks. Mas work, compression, socks number one, sleep number to a cold, shower and three compression socks these might seem highly specific, but when working towards New Year's goals, the more specific we can be the more likely were actually to stick with them. So let's break these three tips down. We've already talked about sleep with Dr Martin. But there's a real reason why Derek also mentioned sleep as one of the top recovery goals. Sleep is probably the greatest known performance enhancer known to man, it's been shown to decrease our chance of getting sick or getting hurt. And certainly a lack of sleep has been shown to have a way. Weight gain and recreational athletes as well as elite level athletes increased chance of diabetes. So sleep is number one. But I want to get back to that cold shower. Derek mentioned the cold showers what Derek recommends to all of his clients, but for his elite athletes, Derek recommends a more intense version of that culture hydrotherapy there are three types of hydrotherapy that both Derrick I use with our athletes. The first is taking an absence salt bath for about fifteen to twenty minutes. Studies show that adding Epsom salts to a warm bath that means getting the bathwater between one hundred one hundred and three degrees, loosens muscles and stiff joints the second. Is contrast water therapy, which consists of hopping and cold water for about a minute. And then immediately getting into warm water for a minute all the way up to around fifteen to twenty minutes. It's possible that this method could allow for increased blood circulation and elite muscle soreness after a workout. We can really look at the role of contrast water therapy. It's a little bit more intricate in that you have to have two different. Things not just the coal tub. Jeff to have a warm tub, the warm tub is typically a hundred degrees right around the level of their core. Temperature after we exercise the coal tub. Same thing roughly fifty to sixty degrees Fahrenheit. We do a one to one ratio. So one minute and called one minute and warm, the literature seems to suggest that doing that seven times. So roughly a total of fourteen fifteen minutes really seems to work out. Very well. So that's something that can be done within thirty minutes of the exercise the second is cold water immersion. That's when I have my athletes hop into a freezing cold pool after a workout. Some studies show that cold water immersion can improve recovery by reducing fatigue muscle soreness. Exercise induced muscle damage, and inflammation, it could be ideal for mid week recovery tool. If you're training for an intense competition, and while this recovery technique can be really effective for some people hydrotherapy is not a one-size-fits-all technique. So. So a typical protocol for cold water immersion would be we have one of those athletes get into a coal tub typically for about ten maybe fifteen minutes, and that's something which they can do to lower their core temperature that something they can do to really help speed up recovery to the recreational athlete. They might be sitting there saying that's completely ridiculous. It simply hurts to get into something that cold. So there's a variety of different modalities that the recreational athlete can do if they don't want to sort of go that route one of which in the evidence is really shown how incredibly effective a cold shower can be after a workout. You don't get quite the same benefit as getting an cold tub. But if we get into a cold shower, immediately after our workout then there really seems to be a lot of upside that can happen. There's a lot of physiological things happen when we expose ourselves to particularly to cold and some of the the various things that it can do to. Us can increase. Our beta endorphins, which increases the sense of wellbeing could increase our dopamine levels, which helps with voluntary movement and sleep patterns, and motivation and mood increased serotonin and neuro Trenton, which also helps with moods if cold water immersion sounds like something you want to try. You don't have to commit to going to facilities. You can do it yourself FILA bathtub with cold water.

"Then i think they'll go somewhere in the meantime this is a tough deal because you cannot force a kid into an incident relationship with cheeses you can only have one yourself and make sure that what you're speaking about is his goodness has graciousness throats are making sure rate and making sure that that what you're speaking lines up was your here too because pretty soon your arms are going to have to open up wide and you're going after forget about the behaviour problems and just low on the child or those who were connects to what you're saying earlier about taking on the attitude of god manure lawyer from spinning their per time thinking through the scriptures at the lord's giving you're having an intimacy with god in that getting you off of the negative focus on your child behavior and onto the positive things the promises that you talked about uh that is so critical what you're saying there and i fail at that a times were i get more into the behavior that's a good reminder kathleen that we need to as parents hold tight to the promises even when we see no evidence that our children especially are teens or walking in the way we would hoped they would have walked and um that is powerful at the questions coming back through my heart and you're right now from those listening saying where the kids at today how old are they what's happening fila said the most important thing is that all three kids love jesus if twenty nine twenty seven and twenty five the youngest just got married and middle charged amy she has her own business she lives in tennessee and our oldest daughter works with me in ministry luisa cited to start the ministry i thought she is the perfect complement in a to my skillset.
