"The vice-president engineering got onto based on the information presented here this evening by my engineers. We would not recommend launching below fifty three degrees, Fahrenheit. Now the way the arrived at that number was that is so happened just one year earlier January nineteen, eighty five. We launched a shuttle. And we retrieve these boosters under parachute out in the ocean and bring them back. And pull them apart. And eventually send them back to Utah what would make him to be reloaded with propellant for future use and what way not just will be pulled them apart. That one of these big deal joints where these things are connected. In each side will boost Ronnie side showed evidence of some hot gas getting past the primary Oh rain. And stopped by the second now. This is such a critical function that you have to have redundancy meaning to too low rings in this area to make sure that the gas could not get out. And this is the first time we'd ever seen guests get past the first one. Fortunately, stopped by the second one. But annotated almost all the way around the joint. And I remember getting prepared for the launch subsequent to that of trying to explain why it was. Okay to continue flying shuttle. And what we had concluded was that that was the colas launch. We'd ever achieved at that time and the shuttle program, and that was fifty three degrees is what we the ring temperature was. And the next launch wasn't gonNA be until April. And everybody felt comfortable that we'd be well above that which we were. Well so happen that now we're facing a situation where it should be much colder than that. So we never expected. And so that the recommendation was made, I felt was absolutely correct based on what we had. And somebody that's from Florida if you're listening eighteen degrees in Cape Canaveral is just unimaginable. I grew up in Florida, my entire life and I don't think I experience more than ten days in twenty years that we're below thirty right and anything below even fifty three has called and so you're saying the temperature fifty three degrees or below 'cause temperature you know makes things expand or shrink. So it was called was kind of making these overhangs not fit correctly. Well. What it did is it the ranger fluorocarbon type rubber material they're twelve feet in diameter. about a quarter of an inch thick. And any rubber material as you? decrease the temperature in it one, it becomes harder. And less flexible, and secondly a very important Element of. An old rain is compressed in a joint which means it squeezed in there. And it's Bush together in you have to be able to expand it back out when these joints pressurized because it opens a bit. And doesn't want to go back to its original condition which Maintains contacts on both sides. It's kind of like taken up West Sponge and putting your thumb on it. And then Reggie releasing it sponge you follow your thumb but you take that Spungen, throw it in the freezer then take it out and Bush on it. You'll notice it had a dent and it'll stay that Dan until he's up..

"Live in out here as long as we have well we don't have central heating out here Klay are let's go back to the phones and the jail in San Jose another caller from down the South Bay welcome I thank you for taking my call we made plans to go to Disneyland and running to provide on thanksgiving day morning and better dot com it's very animated in their warning about last night and bill and lower HM so I mean I was a check and then I canceled my trip and I started reading and I really hope you can talk me out of bed and I'll probably end up running the jacket charter well the Turkey trot sounds like it's going to be very popular especially after the show I mean it listen if you drive down interstate five there will it is very likely there will be whether going over the grapevine so that's the area south of Bakersfield after ninety nine and highway ninety nine interstate five come together just southeast and southwest to Bakersfield so you know you go over the mountains there the the the the to hone pass I think it's about forty two forty three hundred feet and there will be snow up there now what we don't know is how good a job you know cal trans will have done keeping the road clear they usually do a really good job but sometimes that road is closed so you're just gonna have to really monitor weather conditions one place to do that if you go to the cal trans site there is and look for road conditions you just plug in the highway number and they will you know say the morning over the night before they can show you what conditions are on interstate five there all righty Jay good luck and let's that read some of our listener comments here alley has a question Dan can you please comment on how the air quality and smog should improve with the passing of this rainy weather well the bay area is famous or infamous for blowing it's pollutants elsewhere so it's usually really good for us to have the storms coming in off of the Pacific the the problem is for people further east or south of us because a lot of what is blown out of here and not necessarily in a big storm this will really flush things a good long way and disperse it but a lot of times our our pollutants wind up stagnating in the San Joaquin Valley does the does the moisture of the rain does a doing to dissipate the smarter just pushes it in another correct well the rain had does have a a cleansing of fact I mean there it does actually catch particulates as it falls and actually you know with the new yes of rain is usually some kind of tiny solid particle off and a male pollution particulate and so there is a cleansing effect it's transitory though we we always notice the beautiful beautiful clear air and whether it after rain this a few days afterward to to drive in mess things up again you'll see things Hayes up all right here's another question Kirk asks the ocean water has been unusually cold lately about fifty three degrees Fahrenheit how does this data point fit into the with a winter rain forecast you know I don't know you know we what we've been noting earlier in the season was unusually warm water in the Pacific off of our coast fifty three actually sounds pretty typical for this time of year what you can say about the longer term forecast is we it does look like we're going into a period maybe the next couple of weeks where we're going to see some wet weather now looking out beyond that you know you get into climatic models and those don't really give you that exact an insight into what we're going to be seeing rain Weiss Charles go back to the phones again the number eight six six seven three three sixty seven eighty six and Hobey up in Petaluma welcome your next thanks thanks so much gotten there and Richard going to talk to you and and great show overall with forum I really appreciate it thank you half of Michael and the group there you go no well you all are great he other scientists myself and down my training actually the street he she did us but I've always been curious when things like this come in what is the phenomenon of an atmospheric river and why why is the sky shows saturated with water during an atmospheric river and what I mean I understand the side the phenomenon of precipitation but why it during an atmospheric river and we just yet so much water so quickly falling out of the sky okay so maybe we should do a show on that you know and actually we do have some resources online at KQED science where we did some explainers this past winter on what our atmospheric rivers and and why they happen but I think they did the simple answer and well I offer some trepidation knowing I'm talking to a chemist is that you know these things originate in the tropics or subtropics and so there is lots of water that is evaporating in moving into the atmosphere and when the right combination of of dynamics happens where you have a storm is actually able to start tapping into or moving that supply of evaporated water which can become as your you described it is saturated it is very saturated air it it actually you can see it on the satellite maps and and the the weather models there are a couple of really good sites out there that maybe we can point you to a later that you you actually see this river like column of air that he actually moved all the way from Hawaii sometimes well beyond Hawaii straight into the coast and it's not always California it's not always northern California these things can make landfall Washington all the way down into Baja how's it different if at all from like the what happens around hurricane you know a hurricane is a much more I mean they can be vast in size but it's a much more concentrated phenomenon that sort of moves as a as a discrete body into a coast it's similar in that it is tapping into the effects that happened when ocean water is is heated so the hurricanes always happen over very very warm water here the atmospheric river can happen over very cold water the important thing is that the where the evaporation is happening is actually very warm water it is that answer your question begin to anyway it really does I mean I'm I'm curious as a blind person so when you look at this satellite slow you actually see literally a patch of water but sort of unclear we would if you will in the atmosphere sort of brushing like a river is that right it's some people you do see that there is a big long chain of clouds it'll be interesting it's over a thousand miles long fifteen hundred miles long and some people are more tools there are coming from way off the Pacific when it when they had the toast they've been transported in yes all right hope you thanks so much for the call we're gonna try to sneak one more in and let's go to mass in Oakland welcome thank you thank you my call I'm headed north for the holiday almost to the Oregon border and and I'm wondering is there a window of time tomorrow that you would recommend leaving by or is it passed away in leave Thursday morning you're going straight up five five and then over at reading on two ninety nine yeah where you headed up the Klamath falls okay all right you know I don't think tomorrow's is tomorrow looks like a very good travel day but monitor the road conditions go look at the cal trans road conditions a report and you know I mean it it's hard to it's really hard to say it's it is clear that the National Weather Service expects a lot of snow in those hills above the valley and then snow even down into the valley so there there are a couple of passes you go over on to ninety nine there it'll be real snow we up there all right medicine drive carefully and that damn we just got about a minute left here we haven't even talked about SF hope so many people flying in and out of the bay area for the next couple days how much you can do about that you don't have a lot of a lot of flexibility storms always interfere with travelers happiness at SFO and I don't think this is going.

They are Kinda knows they can combine speaking of cads. You know that none of her sisters commented or posted or did anything on their social media celebrating her six hundred million dollars is what is that. What does that mean well? I don't know I just that I don't have sisters but I'm guessing that's some sister stuff right there. I have to tell you Kim did the original heavy lifting on that family you know. I wonder if I were Kim. I'd say you I know what by beacon little here easily always this way in families you know. One family member has to toil in the sex tape video dungeons other a family. Member can be a cosmetics empire. How many times does it helps an old? Everybody knows that so I I was hunting around doing a little Christmas shopping being online and I landed on a site that really just cut to the chase. These are unique gifts for men that men won't have to pretend they don't hate unique gifts for men that your man won't have to pretend he doesn't hate okay. One hundred pound weighted blanket. Did you ever start using that again. The cats on it well. It's good yeah I know it. If you're a beer drinking guy todd you might like this one these are cooling pint glasses there. They have like this Regular glass but then they've got this ring of something right around the center that keeps your brew precisely between forty three and fifty three degrees Fahrenheit. "The orbiter was launched in landed nine times before breaking apart seventy three seconds into its tenth mission on January the twenty eighth. I'm sorry. I just said thirty one because I was looking at the humidity there on the satellite clock on January twenty eighth nineteen eighty six resulting in the death of all seven crew members, including civilian teacher schoolteacher. It was the first of two. Shuttles to be destroyed in flight with the other being Columbia and two thousand three the accident led to a two and a half year. Grounding of the shuttle fleet whites resumed in nineteen eighty eight flown by discovery. I don't want to turn a tragedy into some simple lesson. But. There is. Some semblance. You know? Whenever I get on this program. Lots tons I give cultural and social critiques regional critiques state critiques, and it's difficult for me. Sometimes because I don't wanna be that guy. I don't I don't wanna be the hypocrite. I need to know that things are going well at my house. Immonen place before I can begin to critique and. In order to not cast aspersions on a larger place. In a bring that up to say that. In the investigation. Many of you know, where I'm going in the investigation. This is the New York Times from June tenth nineteen eighty six. This is the headline shuttle commission blames NASA in rocket builders for challenger explosion. This is the lead the decision to launch the challenger was flawed. Those who made that decision were unaware of recent history of problems concerning the oval rings in the joint in were unaware of the initial written recommendation of the contractor advising against the launch. It temperatures below fifty three degrees Fahrenheit and the continuing opposition of engineers after management reverses position. They did not have a clear understanding. Of Rockwell's concern that it was unsafe to launch because of ice on the pad. If the decision makers head known all the facts, it is highly unlikely they would have decided to launch on January twenty eighth nineteen eighty six. The decision came down to this. Record low temperatures in Florida at that time, the O rings were only made two with hole in rings between the rockets in between metal joints in the aircraft. We're only made to withstand fifty three degrees or higher and that day on the pad. I twenty ish twenties degrees at liftoff. And they went ahead with it. Just a little thing. Like an owning made all the difference in in fuel began to seep out and caught on fire. As rockets blasted and all seven members of the crew died. In. I think back to another accident in that being the titantic, and what did the titantic what was it fatal flaw? It was the rivets. The rivets were made iron is cheaper. Then. At that time iron was cheaper than steel. The rivet makers went with. Iron over steel and iron could not withstand the blow of the glacier. I. Bring up the challenger in the Titanic to say, this is of father of four little ones in a house that I try to look after in a hope that don't sound sanctimonious in this. But it is the little things, ladies and gentlemen. It is the little things that make or break our success in life and the little things beginning at the Ponderosa, whatever your ponder Rosa is those are the things that matter at the end of the day. Now, I was at a bar of all places in Washington DC one time, and there was sun on the wall said once you lose your integrity. The rest is a piece of cake. In in in our homes, if I know a lot of our audiences in their forties or younger in our homes. The things that matter are the inches that are gathering between those ankles, and those knees and those knees in those ties is those kids get bigger and bigger, and what's tons. We look at everything, but the little things intentional time that we put in the the balls that we throw or we don't throw the basketball practices we attend or we don't attend and those are the little things. Those are the only rings that can lead to success or failure later..
