"The E. R. bet on pet like radio I'm excited to have even say Tieline who is a VTS which means he's a better technician specialist and registered veterinary technician who is an expert in the field of medical cannabis now he happened to found the veterinary cannabis academy and he's also a consultant for all that science is which is a company that actually is making medical cannabis available to that Neri patience Stephen thank you so much for taking the time to be on today show I thank you so much for having me so this is a super hot topic right now and people are probably wondering what does this have to do it ER bat and I will say is a merchant C. critical care specialist I do see marijuana poisoning all the time in dogs rarely ever in cats and this can be poisonous but this is totally different from medical cannabis so why am I can see poisoning from T. H. C. itself I wanted to bring someone on to be able to talk about the use of medicinal marijuana or even medicinal cannabis because I think this is a topic that a lot of pet owners are interested in first of all can you tell us the difference what's the difference between pot and cannabis and what some of these companies are providing to pet owners yeah absolutely and this is the first most important definition we need to understand is pet owners and practitioners is a difference between something like marijuana and something from him plants marijuana is a plant that has a lot of THC so it's certainly the thing that we expect to see marijuana toxicity or talks the closest from because that molecule in particular THC can cause some pretty significant side effects in animals that we don't necessarily want to see and then we also have the him plants which is high in things like CD and other things called cannibal noise and them which human medicine and veterinary medicine is looking at very closely as a new therapeutic option for several different disease processes we also have to understand what the two different types of plants that we're talking about marijuana and him I often use the term cannabis as it's kind of a catch all for marijuana and him so when I say cannabis I'm usually talking about both things or are one plant in that scene genus of plants the other thing that we need to understand is marijuana is still illegal at the federal level and is definitely something that an Ariens should be cautious about talking about with had owner so if you're a pet owner in you're you're wanting to talk about medical marijuana with that at that are nearing the end there may be some hesitation and that's because there are some pretty strict laws and some potential for them to even lose their license so we have to be very cautious when it comes to him we have a different understanding of lies at the federal level we recently had him and its derivatives it's things from and like CVD be removed from what's called the controlled substance act which technically at least at the federal level allows medical professionals to talk about and potentially use some of these products with that said there is a little cabbie ought certain states have put their foot down and the FDA is still not giving us really good information are really solid information on how to interpret these new laws so we're still a little bit and the conundrum but at least at the federal level products coming from him plants are legal and again it's gonna be state by state until we get some really good legislation written and better interpretation from the FDA and certainly the USDA as well so what do we do when an owner set a pet owner says to us I am using X. product when I'm using my own medicinal marijuana how do we educate pet owners on the difference between these different chemicals and compounds sure I think the best thing that we can DO es practitioners whether we're a technician or the near and we also wore to take this oath to protect your Pat and protect the consumer which is the owner and regardless of our feelings our understanding on things I think it is you know our responsibility to learn about this as much as possible and in that and in the least what we can do as practitioners is ask owners why they want to use these cannabis products you know maybe there is a more typical pharmaceutical drug that can produce the same attacks or maybe even better fax without the the legal question right the other thing that we can do as practitioners and certainly as owners I tell owners us all the time whenever you want to use a product because this is unregulated we need to choose a safe product and the only real way that we can choose a safe product at this point is for asking for a piece of documentation and it's called a certificate of analysis and this should be done by a third party laboratory in on the certificate of analysis we should have things broken down R. S. so that we as a consumer and the practitioners can understand so it should have a can of annoyed profile so how much THC how much CBD how much of these other kind of annoys are actually in this product the other thing that we should look for on the COA is called the terpenoid profile so how many terpenes are in this product as well and those are the part of the plant when you smell marijuana plant are you smell someone you know smoking a joint on the street what you're smelling is not teach Sears CVD you're smelling these terpenes and there and those are important because they work synergistically they work as friends with these can't annoyed things like CBT to make them work better so we want to see a terpenoid profile on there we also want to see a bacterial or a pathogen reports on the COA as well to make sure that we're not giving our cats some nasty bacteria that can be growing in these products because a lot of times are putting them and other types of coils maybe it's fish oil maybe it's vegetable oil or whatnot so we can get build up of nasty things I can actually make our pets more sick and then we also want to look for a fungicide and a pesticide analysis so when they grow these him plants are these marijuana plants all these really important molecules these chemicals that we want to see the therapeutic a fact from actually grow on the outside of the plants and obviously if you spray something with pesticides or fungicides you can't necessarily just wash those pesticides and and fungicides off like we do our vegetables because we would lose all of those important molecules and so what we wanna do is make sure we're not contaminating our pet or yourself if you're taking these products with these aren't chemicals the other thing that we want to look for is called an elemental analysis so the cannabis plants are really good at absorbing things from their environment they actually use them to clean soil to an extent and so we want to make sure we don't have heavy metal contamination and they're still looking for things like let so all of this testing sounds really expensive and I think the hard thing is because this is such a hot topic right now what if the company doesn't provide this information or are there a lot of companies that actually have this on their website or do we have to do a lot of research to be able to find if it's not appropriate product or not we're safe product sure so a lot of companies especially the reputable winds will either have their certificate of analysis on their website or if you as a customer reach out to them and say Hey can I see the certificate of analysis they should be able to provide you one if they don't provide you with one or they give you some sort of story about it being a proprietary blends I just wouldn't use the product any reputable company should be able to give you the certificate of analysis the other thing that we can kind of look for as well as if you go to the FDA website you can actually search for companies is that it may be received letters from the FDA and what we're seeing is there is a most recent study done with with pen and the FDA showing that seventy percent of the products out there don't have cabin only profiles that match with the label says which is really really alarming so there are some pretty shady companies out there so for extra due diligence you can certainly go to the FDA website and make sure the company you're interested and doesn't have any of these letters but scared me so much because even the professionals are not necessarily aware of the difference between T. H. C. answer in Canada but no aids in so for that reason I think a lot of people were here annoyed that some of these can a broad products were going to result and quote marijuana poisoning I also think the hard thing is we also got an email from the FDA stating a lot of these products in actually happen measured amount of camping it's in there so again it does emphasize you do have to be your own pet advocate and your own advocate for yourself and it's also important to make sure that their scientific backed up data behind the product to make sure it's safe for your Pat now what yep have you ever seen any side effects from giving a dog or a cat cannabis and more importantly what are some of the benefits that are published that are out there regarding it sure so this is a big conversation and you know one thing that has unfortunately been kind of perpetuated in veterinary medicine is that we don't necessarily have a lot of research and you know I definitely am a contrarian when it comes to that you know there's actually thousands of scientific papers out there a lot of them are in lab animals species but what people forget is lab animal species also includes dogs and cats so we do have some really good talks studies on different cabin waits out there and you know some of the talk studies specifically we don't have an established a what's called a lethal dose or an LD fifty for animals and even human at this point what we're thinking or what we're suggesting is that lethal dose might be more than nine thousand milligrams per kilogram of T. H. C. for our animals but again we just don't have proof of that because we have studies going up to three thousand milligrams per kilogram and it wasn't killing the dogs that were in those studies we also have a recent study that was put out by the British journal of pharmacology in two thousand eighteen by walk doctor Wally at all and what they were actually doing was giving twenty seven milligrams per kilogram of T. H. C. combined with twenty five milligrams per kilogram of C. B. D. two dogs over fifty six weeks so this is a long term study and we didn't see any seizures or any of the really really scary things that we would expect to see from THC toxicity specifically but what we did see in something that we can see what products on the market right now are some other central nervous system side effects such as being really sleepy or being just hype active in general if we have high doses of teach see by chance we can see.

H. C. combined with twenty five milligrams per kilogram of C. B. D. two dogs over fifty six weeks so this is a long term study and we didn't see any seizures or any of the really really scary things that we would expect to see from THC toxicity specifically but what we did see in something that we can see what products on the market right now are some other central nervous system side effects such as being really sleepy or being just hype active in general if we have high doses of T. H. C. by chance we can see some a taxi are some wobbling answered not able to necessarily walk appropriately and certainly some dribbling of urine as well but I think the studies are coming out and it's really really nice to show us that we can use these products safely and just not necessarily be scared of them we do have some other studies out one was done by the company that you mentioned I consult or and it was done out of Cornell University in collaboration with al that sciences and that was done by doctor Joseph wash locks lab and what they did was a study looking at the pharmacokinetic of these particular molecules in particular ACB deep product and trying to find out an appropriate dose for alleviating symptoms related to arthritis in older dogs and what they found was a two milligram per kilogram dose twice a day seemed active for over eighty percent of the dogs in that study and what's also really nice about that study is some other dogs in that study were definitely geriatric and they were on nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs as well and we always get concerned about toxicity with nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs especially when given chronically and we found that see B. D. and the the nostrils didn't have any adverse reactions what's interesting about that as well is doctor don Bluth she is doing some studies and looking at C. B. D. levels in THC levels and dogs and cats and horses and what she's finding is even though we have these theoretical drug interactions we're just not really seeing that in clinical medicine I would say the most common drug interaction that we're seeing is with he medications things like Gabba Penton maybe even tram at all and in combination with C. B. D. products animals are are sleepy for a few weeks and then our body figures out how to metabolize them appropriately and then they're not so sleepy anymore and they're they're getting the benefit of both drugs at the same time with no other side effects there's another study that was published last summer from doctor McGrath's lab out of colors State University and they were doing a similar thing as to what was done at Cornell doing a P. case study and they used a much higher dosages in their dogs they went up to twenty milligrams per kilogram and found that there was really no huge concerning side effects in both studies we did see an increase of a liver enzyme called the A. L. P. but what we found was over time that normalized and we think that's related to how the the liver actually metabolizes these molecules and again once it figures it out it goes back to normal and it's not a concern anymore a senior bring up a lot of important points I should say doctor don booth is a really well known that Neri pharmacologist for those to be guys who don't know her and so I'm excited to see some of her research come out I will also say the toxicologists when I do see our true marijuana poisoning so a dog it a joint or eight by our eight baked goods then we can definitely see poisoning from it and again that's hopefully different from the can of annoyed but I think the key thing that you brought up is as a toxicologist I don't advocate for medicinal marijuana because we don't know the toxic dose we don't know that all the fifty necessarily and so it is a little bit hard but the good thing is dogs rarely died from true marijuana poison and I'm it needs a lot of supportive care dogs can develop symptoms at really low doses but again that's totally different from cannabis products and so really important that we be able to differentiate that will continue with this really important topic right after these.

"And when he said I was like, it was like Robert Downey, junior, looking at the camera going, Myron, man, and you go, dang, do Iran and Luke Donald looking at the camera, and I was like, I know this dude is world number one. Like you could see it in his eyes, but he was, we were kind of in that we were in that post tiger run where we were looking for world number-one because his run ended in two thousand ten. And then he had guys like Lee, Westwood Martin timer on that's Donald how to for weeks. Those guys were like, one hit wonder, I know, look, forty weeks is not a fluke, and at the time at the time, if you had one guy when he was world number one for those forty weeks, if you said hundred yards to save your life. His was the first name that's coming up and there wasn't even close. Stunning to me, it wasn't even close for who's next because his wedge game was the greatest in the world, and he was a short hitter who didn't hit it straight. But he when he hit the fairway, he made birdies and when he missed the fairway, he made pars what's more stunning to you? Luke Donald having cume number of fifty six weeks at world number-one or Phil Mickelson never been world number one. Phil Mickelson never get that one. You know. And the funny thing was when Phil had the opportunity to become number one for those weeks when tiger was gone, every single week that they were off it has to do is finish fifth, like he, he literally couldn't do it. And I remember having a conversation with bones one time about like, why him no, Phil new. 'cause you know, Phil wants to know everything that's Louis. So he knew. Exactly what he needed to do every single week and putting that extra pressure on himself. He couldn't do it. He couldn't get the job done to get to world number one, which to think that Phil has never been number one in the world. That'd be like going. I don't know fat. Albert looked like fat Albert and never had a cheeseburger. It's just not possible right wanted you were go at that. It is like me. Ending. I don't know if you noticed, but I'm a vegetarian, not eight a tree, you're not just, no, but I've had this conversation before with people of why. There are a lot of vegetarian that are overweight. If easy Melwood is Brandon cheeses bread, it's, it's all bread is bread. People say vegetarian, then they'll, they'll get a vegetarian, they'll get when a half foot long sub with enriched bread. I don't understand. I'm vegetarian well, you know what? Now, you know, keep eating a loaf of bread. Because you can eat French fries. Those are dairy and aren't they? This is what I tried to explain to cause me and where my son goes to school, the coaches he start working out. He's large do too. So I was like, hey, man, I start working out. You went to the gym last week in for us. Thanks man. Then the do quote me the price and I was like. All right. Not making TV money, so. But I said to, I could work out to the cows, come home, but if you're not eating the right food. You might as well. Yeah, you just floating in. You're not making progress. So I have to figure out a way to convince my wife that rice is not a vegetable. Yeah, you're gonna have to. That's going to have to come out of the equation. Yeah, I don't know how to do it. I don't know why don't you guys try eating? Can't you make like like squash and stuff? Can't you get a special thing to make it like possible that cauliflower, you can do the colorful mashed potatoes which are delicious. Put butter on them. Yeah, butter has nothing to do with nothing. That's fine. What are you talking about?.

"Start i mean i think first of all important to remember that a lot of what is happening is not dilemma of trump was crazy any woke up this morning thinking i'm going to do this even though he does actually have the power to end i think one of the lines that ministration split out over and over it's like you know we're just impersonal there's nothing we can do this was a crisis that was created by decisions and by their policies what is happening is that trump promised voters he was going to build his wall has failed to deliver on that and so is now trying to force immigration reform of whatever kind by hijacking causes and people in indicate hijack children he went went for teenagers and youth i now he's going for children so forward that to monday we had i think possibly d most incredible white house press briefing i have seen under this administration first of all this press which is saying something it definitely has something we have very low standards the press briefing was scheduled for one pm didn't happen until five secretary nielsen was in your liens where she gave an address talking about all this stuff to a very friendly audience right national sheriff's association and reports say that huckabee sanders press secretary refused to face reporters on her own after being pressed on his very issues in the past weeks and she's had some really tense exchanges with reporters of very issue don't have any what these people are going to have less ryan settled down i'm trying to be serious but i'm not gonna get a lot of firms jill please in the have these people have nothing ran i know you're gonna get some more tv i wanna ready go ahead jill honestly answer you too serious question these people had nothing they come to the border with any prochildren cages your your children don't you any entity but they go through so probably actually dropped incredible heartbreaking devastating recording just as the white house was pushing its briefing for the audio clips of these children wailing that just came out today i have i have not seen as something that came out today but i have been to detention centers when they finally started at secretary nelson got unsafe sex she hadn't heard it which is a lie the first manny lies she just like push through in this breathtaking day just spend hours trying to come up with a response to this that we're actually reporters in the room that were playing the audio during this press conference which was extremely chaotic and and very emotional and intense but to talk about nielsen said she lied about not having sinn images of kids in cages she lied about not having heard this recording she lied about demonstration being able to do anything about this she lied about these being delayed this is not the law this is a policy of the trump administration she looked at the camera and said we have high standards we give them meals we give them education we give the medical care there's videos there's tv's visited the detention centers myself which is again a blatant glide just we had to intercept done this story just a couple months ago on massive sexual assault and rampant abuse happens immigration detention centres we exposed more than twelve hundred complaints of sexual assault happening attention centers and we know that's just a tiny slice of what is happening there we have between twenty and twenty seventeen that was between twenty and twenty seventeen i'm happy to go into a little bit more of that report some of the things we found as part of that story the more than half of the alleged perpetrators of sexual abuse in immigration detention centers where is agents or private contractors working for ice on extraordinarily high number of ice officers witnessed abuse and did nothing to end it so this is really rampant abuse that's been going on for years definitely hasn't started under the trump administration by no means but to go up and say dis kids are being well taken care off an ice is perfectly capable of protecting the safety and will be in other people detained and we have the highest essential sanders that is one of the most extraordinarily is that we heard yesterday and we heard many run the senator ron wyden of oregon tweeted this week that he had met with a man in immigration detention who's eighteen month old child he doesn't know the whereabouts of explain why there are children so young fifty six weeks eighteen months how did they end up here and wire they separated from their parents well we just got.
