Tips for Dating During the COVID-19 Pandemic

"Want to jump to our very first question from a listener and jp. This is right in your wheelhouse. it's about romance from haiti in brooklyn. Who is fifty one years old. I'm trying to decide whether i should say. I actually was seriously considering joining a matchmaking service before it started then i kind of them holds and i'm just not sure investment path. I want to go down. It's really hard obviously to meet people from intentional about this. So i really feel stuck and in a heartbeat right now. They send events. We hoped stuck. Jp do you have any advice for haiti. Felt making this decision about. When is the time to really go at it with dating a zoo and you know this is the first time that matchmaking ever been brought before me. Usually we just call that grinder in my world. I assume it's quite different. In his context. It sounds interesting. I mean. I kinda wanna do a matchmaking thing. Now they sit down with someone and we have a discussion. That sounds lovely. But i understand the reluctance. I think it's been a hard year for all of us. We for those of us who started out the pandemic single and still are. It's been a lot of time to reflect on what we're looking for another person why we haven't found it yet. It's where was our kobe. Blue cetera That can be very stressful. And the idea of getting back out there even if it's just a hang out with friends again for the first time that we haven't seen in a while It can be scary or a little bit more awkward than we were before and it wasn't even easy before so what. I've been sort of doing what i've been telling other. People that is on the table for them is to maybe lower the stakes a little bit when it comes to meeting new people so engaging in activities that you enjoy anyway Especially ones that are like outdoors and in groups. So i've been doing these hiking groups and meeting a lot of great new people that way because when you go at it with the express intent of i need to find my next partner in this endeavor. You're putting a lot of expectations on yourself. You're putting a lot of pressure on yourself and if you leave that one singular meeting without having found anyone yes start to feel like a failure. So what i'm suggesting people do. If they're nervous is find something you like to do anyway and you already have a common interest with the people there even. If you don't find someone you want date you could end up with a connection with a

Doomsday Parents, Chad And Lori Daybell

"Laurie Velo Bouza forty, six year old mother of three married a fifty one year old father of five Chad Day bill. On November fifth two thousand nineteen in Kauai Hawaii. Chad's wife for close to thirty years. Tammy. Day. Bill have been found dead in her home just two weeks earlier. So obviously, they didn't waste much time remarrying. Stunningly Quick Tammy was in apparently healthy forty, nine year old woman infectious training for a marathon. Just, ten days before her death, which was October ninth two, thousand, Nineteen Tammy reported on facebook and the police that masked man had shouted her with what she thought could be a paint gun what's going on there right? Exactly. The other very interesting aspect is Laurie and Chad had picked out and ordered their wedding bands more than two weeks before Tammy Steph. That's right. Shoe on that one for a while right so October fourth to fifth tammy visited her parents Beck in Springville. Utah, where she's from and then a few days later on October nine, a man ski mask was shooting at her so I guess the police decided it was just some kind of prank because she thought it was a paint gun and they never found the guy, but it's very curious. WHOA, it is and it's really just the tip of the iceberg in this really strange case with all the suspicious occurrences just everything surrounding lawyer and Chad, his mess and very suspicious of course. Yes that's an understatement. So Chad Chad Day Bell is lawry's fifth husband. Laurie was born Laurie Noreen Cox June twenty sixth of Nineteen seventy-three in San Bernardino California and she grew up with two brothers Alex and Adam and two sisters Stacey and summer Alex Cox plays a really large role in this whole story so you need to remember him Adam lives in Kansas and he's worked as a radio personality, but he's pretty much out of the whole seen as far as we know so far. Stacy Cox died in her parents home when she was just twenty two years old and this was from complications of type one diabetes lorries remaining living sister Cox shift. Let was one of lorries, biggest defenders until June of this year, and that's when the remains of her children jj entirely were discovered on the property of Chad debacle. Now, people who knew Lori will have said that she really became a person after she became involved with shed she had been considered an excellent mother. And a good friend to many many years ago back in high school Lori was a happy energetic cheerleader at nineteen years of age. She married her high school sweetheart Nelson Jawans. This marriage is over within a year. Then when she was twenty two in Nineteen ninety-five Laurie Mary twenty-three-year-old. William but Sheila, and this marriage was in Travis County Texas. They had a son named Colby in one, thousand, nine, hundred, ninety six, and they ended up divorcing in nineteen. Ninety eight. So, by the time, she was twenty five years old she'd been married and divorced twice already. See and she has one child, and then in two thousand. One Lori Mary Joseph Ryan Joe Converted to Mormonism, and that was the religion it Laurie had been raised in. He didn't legally adopt coby coby took his last name. and. He and Laurie had a daughter together. That's highly in two, thousand, two and two, thousand, four in August Joe filed for divorce from Laurie. And it was finalized in two thousand five. In two, thousand, six, Joe Ryan filed a complaint with the court stating Lori was not complying with the visitation order. He asked she'd be held in contempt then August two, thousand, seven Joe is attacked by Laura's brother Alex. For. This guy chases show around with stun gun. He tased him twice and he threatened to kill him. Yes. So I'm going to ask probably a stupid question is this because of the divorce or because he took her back to court. I'm thinking it was related to the custody issue because the divorce was already finalized been finalized for over a year. But you know she was also looking at some trouble because she was in contempt of court. She wasn't bringing tighly for her visits and she was keeping tidily away from him. So, Alex Laura's brother was very protective of her and actually seemed obsessed at the time with killing Joe. Ryan the incident happened when Joe was leaving a supervised visit with his daughter Kylie and the attack ended when an eyewitness showed up. So Alex, pled guilty to aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury and ended up serving ninety days in jail, and this was in Austin Texas. But the custody battle between Joe and Laurie over tighly really got very dark at one point Laurie head to install cameras in the children's rooms and in the living room for the court to see what was going on in her house. But no abuse apparently was found from that camera footage but just so you know this was a really nasty custody situation. You're S, and then we have Joe Dying in April of two thousand, eighteen still young man. This was determined to be a heart attack they did not topsy, but then he his remains were cremated. This whole time has custody battle with over Retali- had continued to be ongoing, right? I. Believe he was fifty nine but he was pretty healthy and there were some strange things about his autopsy as well. Roy Yeah now the court documents say that Joe Ryan accused Laurie of parental alienation alleging that he had not seen his daughter for more than a year at one point. And he also referred to a court appointed psychologist who had interviewed Lori. And according to court paperwork the psychologist David, our pool

"Christi Man it's good to have you back. I know I think you have a story about you. You are Carlos now right aren't you writing like a kick bike around and you're getting a hamstring workout what's going on with that? Yeah. So we have three cars which in most families is plenty But my daughter has taken a car up to Minnesota and she usually works during the day. She's GonNa go to Iowa the. Sun's. Going to be a junior but he said his license since December and he has volleyball every day. And then tournament sound the weekend, which I don't know is legal or not these this day and age. But basically, I'm a fifty one year old person that doesn't have a car I have a licensed but most my days and evenings I am Carlos. So. A couple of years ago more than a couple years ago I saw Franz Basch was playing around with the kick bike and John Prior. told me about it so. I've become the kick bike master of Chicago I am the. Middle aged guys zooming around on a red kicked bike. My record so far is fourteen miles. which. Is Pretty good on a kick bike I did it in forty minutes but I. Go Grocery shopping go pick up Britos things like that. Throw in my backpack and I kicked bike around the western suburbs of Chicago, which it may look easy. But kick biking is much harder than riding a bicycle It's your one leg is peddling through. So there's a ton of hamstring involved in the other leg. It's like in this isometric squad before. So. He can get low enough to get your foot on the ground. So. That's been my summer so far kicked. biking around trying to get food or go get whatever I need. I. It's awkward like I go to the wine shop, which isn't too far away but we're a backpack in my backpack I got a bottle of wine in a Burrito like. This is Kinda messed up. Usually, it's like a fourteen year old something like that but it's not often you see a fifty one year old how ask you do you? Do you take that thing through timing gates? How fast is that thing go all well, I have these hotshots because sometimes I just go out for the exercise and there's all these trails nearby and you got these hotshot bikers with all their gear on. And I always like to wear street clothes just to make them feel bad and zoomed by the bikers. So I guess I can go fourteen sixteen miles an hour when I get it moving. That's that's not too bad for non motorized. Yeah. But that's a that's a that's a short burst hold that for awhile. You tired really fast. Yeah I was just GonNa say this is a good segue innocent things that you've been some recent sprint ideas and human locomotion ideas but like the spiralling nature things, right like you got one leg, that's has one job and the other leg has the other job and I know you've been talking about the Lila Somme symmetrical stop there said you feel do you feel like you get a little like spiraling action or how long do you go on one leg before you switch to the other see don't like start running circles or do you care does it Usually I do just because I get bored I counted ten so I do ten pedals But then sometimes I go let's see how many I can do on this leg before my. My metric leg, the leg that's on the machine or bike completely is burning and then I'll switch so. Something like that, and I'm usually listening to a podcast. So I'm doing that too. So I'm. To me, there's nothing worse than doing aerobic work I. Think it's just mind numbing. So between going fast and kick by listening to a podcast and. Worrying about crashing in which legs burning word that usually is enough to keep my mind off the fact that I'm kicked biking and it does get to pissed at my children for taking all the cars and using the a kick bite. I think life is interesting. We don't have a car you know. It definitely I feel like there's always something to be learned I I I was Gonna say I will say as I've gotten older too I. I definitely appreciate having a good aerobic system but finding creative ways to do it not just running and in one direction and all that type of thing. So I did your bear crawl push saying this morning. Nice and that's hard it. Oh Yeah. No, it's super hard. It gets it gets tough like it's it gets logarithmic. You know like one, two, three, four whatever. But then he's getting five, six seven I need to come up with a way to make that more like 'cause everyone's GonNa get stuck at like eight you know or you can just rest the really longtime. Yeah. It I thought it would be easier than it actually was. Yeah, for me. I would do if it was me and someone else doing push ups and it was like you could either do two competitions. One would be just how many push ups can you do in two? Let's do that crawl thing. I would do way at the crawl thing because I get to rest and I'm way better read and it gives me a chance to like the take a break and I've rule more aerobic and all that the last stick. So I I think I, just kind of a cheater way for me to make it look like I'm a little stronger, my body or something I don't know. I feel like it's got I was thinking. It's like you do get the gait cycle in between every bilateral. So I agree I felt that same thing I you know I think the crawling huge is everyone's lack down. And we're lucky because we have gym center basements but still you start cranking off pushups just for something to do and. You can it gets a little numbing after a while and you can feel the impact that? Are Great. I crank off one hundred fifty push-ups but I'm not walking as well in my shoulder kinda hurts now. What am I really doing here is it really important to do that many push ups or is it more important that I feel pretty good after I do the exercise? Yeah. I was doing one of the last traditional strength programs I down for a while and ever since all the lockdown stuff and the weight rooms have been a little more sparse. I didn't have a barbell for quite a while, but one of the last programs that I was doing was just easy strength just two sets of five everyday basically three sets of three and I was Barbell benching every day and I haven't Jack, yeah I'm getting older but I haven't I haven't jacked my shoulder up that bad in a long time like my left shoulder was dying after awhile and every time I do those crawls like it's just like it's all good. You know you just a way to mitigate the same stress and you're back in your shoulder blades being pinned. You know, of course too

A highly improbable or extraordinary event, development or accomplishment that brings very welcome consequences. Greg story is full of miracles, but that's not unique. You know I think. The miracles of recovery are widely talked about in our community. Don't stop before the miracle happens is a typical a ISM. Hey, that's because it's true. There are miracles in your sober future. To happen when you least expect them, and they're rarely, if ever explainable. Greg spent the last of his drinking and drug use career as across country drug dealer. This was a nice kid from a nice city with private school college degree, and my disease took me on the brink of facing five years in prison, so I would consider myself. A low bottom got an. We'll get into that here in just a minute real quick. If you would just tell us just about you right now, you know where you live. How old you are! What you do for a living married kids hobbies anything like that name's Greg Champion of fifty one years old. I live in Pacific Palisades California which is just a suburb of Los Angeles. I work in a recovery business and I. Have a wife named Jennifer. A nine year, old daughter, a lease, and a seven year, old daughter name Annabel and some of my hobbies. It's funny I do some of the same hobbies as a kid I body sir. I skateboard and I'm obsessed with mint chocolate chip milkshakes from Baskin Rob's. I love that milkshakes her a hobby. My minor oreos right now so. Comfortable, well, let's get into your story and here in ten minutes or less. Tell us how long you drank cal long it was a problem and why you decided to stop you know. My story begins at four and a half years old. My father was killed in a drunk on your car crash. and I felt different. A mealy filled different because I was gonNA have a dad I. everybody else had two cars in a garage two incomes their DADS were there soccer coaches at our liberty coaches. And so from four and a half to two nine years old when my mom remarried I definitely feel different. And my alcoholism showed up before you even took a drink. A Trish, I I I, I did three things very very well. I got great grades I was a superb athlete. And I was also bowling and I use violence as my first way to medicate my. My mom remarried when I was nine. She married an old World War Two. Vet, a guy who was there on d day, the great thing about this man was that he taught me at a Thai Thai. Shave my face, open doors or women. Really old school ways I think lost in a generation or two, and I'm grateful to them and most mostly unbreathable that he was seventeen years a sobriety. And is exactly what my mother needed and in many ways exactly what I needed, misstep misstep. but what happened was for me was puberty. Right around twelve or thirteen right his cougars kicking and I was entering my freshman year of high school. I found a solution alcohol, marijuana and cocaine I also wanted to show off in front of the girls, and so between the peer pressure of school, looking at pretty girls, and the availability of drugs and alcohol I was well on my way to find my new solution to my inner pane. Did that for a few years might pattern. High School was that I would drink on Friday. Nights drove on Saturday mornings I would again drink on Saturday nights throat on Sunday mornings in the insanity of that going on for four years straight still not hitting square in the is. when all my friends were. Being talked to about school counselor colleges to go the Trish. They were going to cal and Stanford and Michigan Texas Nice Schools in my career counselors, talking about trade schools eventually ended up at a trade school. Arizona State University. and as many no, let's Party School and my alcoholism. Just blew up from there I began doing ecstasy lots of cocaine. In I got out into the real world. And light, actually the day I graduated I got my first you is. Six months later I got arrested for assault. In a bar. A few months later. I got arrested twice in twenty four hours in Mardi Gras. And here's the sicknesses disease stretches I was. There Bourbon Street my first night and went up to speak Irish combination. This is new rules what? What can I do and he says don't piston the streets and don't fight and streets. and. So Trish I'm GonNa have you guess what two things I got arrested for? Did you see while you were fighting with somebody or I'm not that multitalented. So the happened I and less than eighteen hours later, I was led out got back on the streets. got drunk and high again it could not find a bathroom, so I decided in the streets and got caught one more time and so. I have a nice arrest record there in the lovely speakeasy of Louisiana got to be the most eventful twenty four hours I've ever heard of by the way, but I don't WanNa. Take, I. Don't want to interrupt too much. Go ahead, but no, it's crazy. I was real resentful for a lot of years that hey you guys took away my Mardi Gras. You guys, you guys room. I buzz. You know for years. Even sober years in a one old-timer pulls me aside goes. Let me tell you how. How God works God put you in those paddy wagons to save your ass. Because what would happen if he would've stayed out there, you would have been stabbed. Shot would hooked up with some girl and probably got S. t you don't know what would happen, but both those times. He puts you in a paddy wagon because he did for you. What you do yourself and it hit me right between the eyes young. He was right. He's absolutely right. Then I went back to the San. Diego Start Working and I had some resentments. I was promised to a high paying job at a college. I. Was only making nineteen thousand dollars a year and I was working overnight, said the TV station. I don't know about you, Trish when I would get out of work at three o'clock am. There's certain people that are out at three am right. And those lower companions I found these he's lower companions were were girls. You can't bring home to mom and some drug dealers. and. They asked me if If I had any friends on the east coast I, did and we began shipping large amounts of marijuana out to the east coast. and I was part of that process. Eventually I got arrested. In an airport with fifty pounds of pot.

"The fifty one year old suffered a massive stroke less than two weeks ago. And he died Monday after being removed from life support becoming one of about one hundred forty thousand people who die each year from stroke, Ken, all Tucker, consumer health reporter at USA today. Takes a look at the serious health problem and has more Ken, what's the general takeaway here? Where the family probably saw an opportunity to raise awareness with the certainly be untimely death of John singleton who clearly was a very impactful director and screenwriter and their message is basically geared toward the African American community. The fact that have both men and women have American men and women faith, a higher rate of high blood pressure, which increases the risk for stroke, which which happened to Mr. singleton, Ken any idea why the higher prevalence of high blood pressure in African Americans. Study. And that's something medical researchers are certainly looking at. I certainly it's it's preventable thing that you can adjust with lifestyle changes, diet, exercise, etc. And if those things to work, you can take medication. So that's really sort of a message that a lot of medical community is trying to get out and family. I think by going public with his condition, obviously, this is not the first time we've heard of this even lately with actor, Luke Perry. Suffering a stroke. He was like fifty to fifty two. Is there a lifestyle change at these guys are not making? The case and Luke Perry were still awaiting. There was all the topsy and testing from that. So that hasn't been made public yet, Luke Perry, of course, was fifty two Mr. singleton fifty one. I think what we know in this case because the family revealed, it is a long history of hypertension. And so that is certainly the primary risk factor for stroke. You know in pretty common think forty four percent of African American men in forty-eight percent of African American women have some form of cardiovascular disease and rates of high blood pressure. So that's certainly a big risk factor. We're speaking with Ken all Tucker, consumer health reporter at USA today. We're talking about stroke and. The wake of the death of claim director, John singleton symptoms of high blood pressure. Are what? It's called the silent killer, and you you may not notice that you do have high blood pressure, which is one reason that the American Heart Association and the American college of cardiology twenty seventeen kind of study this issue, and they revised what they consider elevated blood pressure. They knocked it down to one thirty over eighty from one forty over ninety. So it's one of those things that you have to be aware of and he continually monitor regardless of race or ethnicity and that change in twenty seventeen was not without controversy. But the general idea is to raise awareness about this high blood pressure. It's stunning this that you had at the end of your story one hundred three million Americans estimated with high blood pressure. That's like a third of the country, and that's part of the controversy to go with the twenty seventeen guidelines. That were revised not all doctors necessarily agree with this. They think that's a little some think it's a little bit aggressive. But, you know, the the groups that came out with these guidelines make the point that not not everybody with elevated blood pressure is required to take medication. It's more of kind of an early warning sign of hey, he may wanna look at your diet. You may want to increase your exercise make those lifestyle changes to get you on a healthy path. "The fifty one year old suffered a massive stroke less than two weeks ago. And he died Monday after being removed from life support becoming one of about one hundred forty thousand people who die each year from stroke, Ken, all Tucker, consumer health reporter at USA today. Takes a look at this serious health problem and has more Ken, what's the general takeaway here? Unique situation where the family probably saw an opportunity to raise awareness with the certainly the untimely death of John singleton who clearly was very impactful director and screenwriter and their message is basically geared toward the African American community. The fact that have both men and women have been American men and women. A higher rate of high blood pressure, which increases the risk for stroke, which happened to Mr. singleton, Ken any idea why the higher prevalence of high blood pressure in African Americans. Study. And that's something medical researchers are certainly looking at certainly it's it's a preventable thing that you can adjust with lifestyle changes, diet, exercise, etc. And if those things to work, you can take medications, so that's really sort of a message that medical community is trying to get out in the family. I think by going public with his condition, obviously, this is not the first time we've heard of this even lately with actor, Luke Perry. Suffering a stroke. He was like fifty to fifty two. Is there a lifestyle change that? These guys are not making. The case in Luke Perry were still awaiting the results of the autopsy and testing from that. So that hasn't been made public yet, Luke Perry, of course, was fifty two Mr. singleton fifty one. I think what we know in this case because the family. Long history of hypertension. We're talking about stroke in the wake of the death of acclaimed director, John singleton symptoms of high blood pressure. Are what? It's called the silent killer, and you you may not notice that you have high blood pressure, which is one reason that the American Heart Association and the American college of cardiology in twenty seventeen kind of study this issue, and they revised what they consider an elevated blood pressure. They knocked down to one thirty over eighty from one forty over ninety. So it's one of those things that you have to be aware of and you know, continually monitor regardless of race or ethnicity and that change in two thousand seventeen was not without controversy. But the general idea is to raise awareness about this high blood pressure. It's stunning this that you had at the end of your story one hundred three million Americans estimated with high blood pressure. That's like a third of the country, and that's part of the controversy to go with the twenty seventeen guidelines. That were revised not all doctors necessarily agree with us. They think that's a little some think it's a little bit aggressive. But you know, the the groups that came out with guidelines make the point that not not everybody with elevated blood pressure is required to take medication. It's more of a kind of an early warning sign of hey, he may wanna look at your diet. You may want to increase your exercise make those lifestyle changes to get you on a healthy path. Thanks, Ken, Ken, all Tucker. Consumer health reporter at USA today. It's twenty one minutes before the hour on this morning. America's First News..

"Batchelor. This is the John Batchelor show. California has a new governor. He's fifty one years old is extremely attractive on the television. I've never seen live. His name is Gavin Newsom. He's been a long apprenticeship out of San Francisco, and then Lieutenant governor for Jerry Brown. Who's now departed to his ranch of the is keeps the podcast area forty five but writing most recently for the Hoover Institution and fighting ideas, he looks for an analogy or a comparison of Gavin Newsom through the long history of California governor's Bill. I believe you've found nothing to compare Gavin. Do good evening to you, John. How are you? I did not find a direct parallel. I was I tempted look generational. Handoff. John because Gavin Newsom is twenty nine years younger than Jerry Brown who at age eighty last year is the oldest governor America do some only fifty one. So I thought the parallel might be Ronald Reagan, and and Jerry. Route one zero guy Jerry Brown was twenty seven years younger than Ronald Reagan. He took over in nineteen seventy five. But now you're talking about rather unorthodox democrat Jerry Brown, replacing a conservative Republican. That's not quite absence Brown, and do some Democrats that I look back at the long history, California, John since the eighteen eighties. Have we had two consecutive democratic governors? I know that's probably surprised if people will take a California's as deep blue state, but the democratic dominance is only recent twenty years or so the closest parallel will probably be nineteen ninety eight John when Gray Davis, I was elected governor a democrat, replacing sixteen years of Republican governors and the parallel being one of the relationship with legislature, which had a lot of money to spend a lot of pent-up frustration for the previous administrations and the governor and the legislature embarked deposited complicated. Talks. That's probably the closest thing to a parallel. We have John you quote from Gavin Newsom inaugural address. And I wanna read this one line. Because it's both uplifting. And suggests that Gavin Newsom has big ambitions. He speaks the country is watching us. The world is waiting on us. The future depends on us. And we will seize this moment now, I know that's not Levin. However, it does remind me of the this when the ocean stop rising speech that Barack Obama gave is Gavin Newsom a presidential candidate is our we're looking at an incubus of the White House. I think he could be a candidate. If he wanted to be John, and that's probably a situation. He's going to have to decide in the next couple of months or so because the Democrats are starting their debates in June. I believe John. And so the, you know bureaucracy candidates announcing Elizabeth Warren, Kamala, Harris, he was on TV last night on choldera. She's gonna soon notes Bernie Sanders make up his mind to news, we'll have to also, but that's a very clever sentence. Because in one one thought he is both aligning himself, California. He's also making it clear that he sees himself as a leader of a national force in that national forces simply hashtag, never Trump. Now. This creates interesting situation for Newsom within California. There are times where it's very appropriate for the cover of California to stand up against the president route sample, Donald Trump goes on Twitter and suggests he is going to take away funds for emergency services for California. Yes, sure. The governor of California you scream bloody murder in tweet Oga appropriately. But other times just to wait in and bash Trump for the sport of bashing Trump, that's not necessarily good. But. Story. I think he could run for president. If he wanted to I take you need some think about it seriously because a window on this may not be open until twenty twenty eight. If a democrat wins in twenty twenty, but he is going to have to be very disciplined and how he does it just don't at Jack Trump bashing and he needs to focus on what is the very aggressive agenda as far as California goes in unabashedly, progressive gender, the license which we've never seen out here. Yes. I see that. He's making the word free commonplace. There's free. I can't find anything. That's not going to be free in California. The word free spending. Now, it's very interesting. He he released his budget on Thursday and got pretty good reviews from all over the map, even Republicans had some positive things because there were elements of the budget which had to deal with taking away one time, borrowing gimmicks, and so forth addressing pensions and so forth. So even Republicans are playing nice. But here's the thing. John. This is January in California governor proposes a budget in January he or she revises the budget it may based upon the tax receipts in April, and then the governor system with the legislature in June and does the budget before the July first Piscopo deadline. So the bigger tail is not what do some analysis in January even what he comes up with. And they may reverse it's what he is willing to do and sit down, and and it brings the legislature in June because what was gonna want to spend more money than he is planning. Simple. And do some decide am I gonna go along for the ride and spent as did Gray Davis, no cost him handsomely ended up getting recalled you might remember or am I going to be a little bit more like my predecessor, Jerry. Brown and push back against their hardest spending instincts and the early tell us he looks to be like Brown. But we'll see if we can cut it with stand up. I'm I'm I'm taken by his enemies list. He lists Republicans DC, I guess they're not enough. Republicans left in California to make enemies polluters that seems like a layup who who's pro pollution. The gun lobby and big pharma. Now, the gun lobby. That's in line with the Democratic Party. Big pharma surprises me, however, big pharma is an equal opportunity contributor to Democrats and Republicans across the country. Why do you think he picked out big pharma says that play well in California? Plays very well and California as well in America because who was happy about drug prices and ironically for as much as he criticizes Donald Trump here governor Newsom oppressive Trumper on the same page when it comes to driving down drug prices. So that's just good Plato populace, it's the gun lobby. The surprise to me that he singled out, China and wives hit the gun lobby. Doesn't have much power in California Newsom passed a gun control initiative and twenty sixteen California is about the most aggressive state in America when it comes to gun control measures. So to suggest that the gun lobby somehow is dominating Sacramento with second amendment talk is just completely false. And that gets back to what we talked about a minute ago, which also is a way to set himself into the national candidate. Because yes. Barba and the gun lobby drawn and tobacco. And a few of the other associated uses the regular village when it comes to democratic caucus. Oh, Gavin Newsom as making him so very much a traditional democrat in that regard. There's a secret in California. It's it's not a well kept secret. Everybody knows about it. A very small number of people at an even smaller part of the Cavs state of California called Silicon Valley pays for everything. Right. And when when tech is doing well, which is right now are California's a Cup runneth over and that bell tack is going to have a downtime. It does is the nature of tech is Newsom speaking to that eventuality. He is tried to speak to that eventuality in terms of offering fiscal restraint. But if you really want to speak to a Sean you would've brought up something, which maybe he will state of the state of the state coming up. We'll say he needs to talk about Californians revenue stream because here's the problem. We are wholly dependent upon upper income earners, and we're wholly dependent upon personal income, especially in the form of capital gains, which is widely volatile, and you know, under the sports guys have no leader say just look at what happened in the market in the last two months, especially to stocks like Facebook and apple these are companies which provide a lot of revenue to the California state budget. They've been hit and you can't rely upon that if you're trying to budget years out. So if some really serious about this problem, he would sit down and do something. Jerry Brown did not something Schwarzenegger tried to do. But gave a very quick. And that's to have an honest to goodness discussion about taxes in California. And I know conservatives will quickly say we need tax cuts and probably right. We haven't had a tax cut in California in twenty years. But from just a fiscal standpoint, John you have to find a way to have a more reliable revenue stream, you just can't plan a budget hoping that capital gains. Come coming wild in the form of IPO's and stock sales and home sales and things like that you need a more reliable base for California that will require a lot of heavy lifting on the part of governor Newsom. And if he goes down that road, I'll be very impressed. But also, very surprised bell. Well, and is at the Hoover Institution research fellow. He keeps the blah the the podcast area. Forty-five highly recommend is a conversation with bills colleagues at the Hoover Institution writing most recently on the new governor, the new new governor of California Gavin Newsom fifty one years old and boy does he look presidential. I'm John Batchelor. This is the John Batchelor show. Taking you through the third shift. This is the John Batchelor show. I'm Jay Farner, CEO of Quicken.
