"Look at the q ratio eater promised revealed something concerning. I assumed that everybody knew the rate of power that went into these reactors but the scientists that i spoke to said well actually we. We don't measure the rate of power that goes into fusion reactors. And i'm going. What are you talking about. We all thought that the rate of power that you talk about was a comparison of power coming out of the power come in and they said no that power ratio doesn't compare the rate of power coming out for power commute it only compares the ratio of the power that used to heat the fuel versus the thermo power. That's produced by the fuel so it really only speaks to what happens. Deep inside the reactor when fusion happens not the energy it takes to run the whole operation or the actual usable energy. that could be produced. Stephen was confused. And i'm thinking. Wow this is a pretty serious misunderstanding. That i had that everybody else that i know had. As far as he knew everybody had understood the ratio mean ten times more usable energy produced than it takes to run the entire reactor. So the first thing stephen did was get in touch with the scientists at jet. The uk reactor that held the previous record for q. He wanted to find out the ratio for total electrical power input versus total electrical power. Output had the reactor been connected to the grid. The efficiency is one percent one percent far from the sixty seven percent. Stephen thought it was that means. If jet was hooked up to the grid the reactor would lose almost all the power. It used to operate our first reaction was. Oh there's a real serious discrepancy here. So what did all of this mean for eater and it's claim to have a ratio of ten. What does that really mean then. Everywhere the ratio was talked about people seem to understand it the same way stephen had take a listen to these two thousand fourteen congressional hearings and now is the right time to build and operate. Experiments finally demonstrate that a made fusion system can consistently produce far more energy and it takes to fuel eater is designed to produce at least ten times energy it consumes. It is now possible to actually build pools gail test reactor that produces for more energy than it uses. Stephen says it was reported that way. If you look at the two thousand seventeen times story if you look at new stories in nature wall street journal new scientist before all of these news outlets reported that the rate of power that would require to operate was fifty megawatts fifty megawatts in four five. Hundred megawatts out. So we'll eater actually produce ten times more energy than it consumes. The answer depends on what you mean by. Energy will the q. Is one of the confusions on this factor is that there's really a queue physics and to some degree there's a q. Engineering that's mark henderson again. The nuclear physicist who works at eater. I asked him what this was all about. And why there was confusion. He said physicists and non physicists. Think of q differently so for me to put in fifty megawatts of power. I need to pull from the grid about one hundred and fifty megawatts and so an engineer. Say wait a minute. You're pulling a hundred and fifty megawatts from the grid. You convert it to fifty megawatts gives me five hundred megawatts out but then those five hundred megawatts are going to heat water the turns a turban then generates electricity that would put back to the grid. Roughly one hundred and fifty megawatts so from an engineer's perspective. If eater was a fusion reactor it would be giving a chew engineering. Roughly of about one accu- physics ratio of ten but a engineering ratio of one. Not ten one mark even doubted if actual engineers who work on fusion sites correctly understood this difference let alone the public but it's an important difference nonetheless that means. The reactor is effectively a zero power. Reactor that stephen again. If the design works is expected we're going to get the same rate of power coming out as the power going in zero extra power that would be available to us for any practical purposes. He notes that if eater was hooked up to the grid it would effectively be a massive expensive complicated scientifically remarkable extension of electrical wire. But of course eater was never going to be hooked up to the grid anyway just to test reactor. So that in itself isn't a huge issue to stephen in the issue is one of misrepresentation. He argues eater should have known q. Physics was going to be misunderstood by the public that language regarding power output and q was always way too squishy for non experts to reach any other conclusion than that q. And fusion power output referred to usable energy rather than heated plasma especially when those terms were so often cited in the context of virtually unlimited energy as a feasible solution to our impending climate crisis that deserved more funding but mark. The eater physicist argues. If there was confusion it was all just a misinterpretation. There was no purposeful misrepresentation. It very easy in any field to be misinterpreted and unfortunately it's easier for people to take potshots at fusion. Just because the the amount of invested money to build a machine the longevity of building a machine people will say well why are you building a fusion reactor compared to for example putting the money into a solar field or to winfield and i. My answer is to say that you know there. We should be looking at a short term objective. Anna long-term objective still though on stage in vienna in two thousand nineteen at ted talk entitled the dawn of the fusion age. Mark did it himself. He cited the ten time power gain without any further explanation of what it really meant. At this point we decided to work together in a large environment where all nations are coming together combining resources to build eater. That's where i work. It's in the south of france. Enter goal is to build a machine performs ten times better so we have one. Going in equals ten watt cell. There it is one. What in equals ten watt out. Technically true but did the audience of non physicists. No he was talking about heating plasma in thermal power or did they assume he was talking about overall electrical power. But i don't like Conveying information in a way that could be misinterpreted. And i think one of the key issues and communication is to be able to understand who your audience is and convey. They give the the that audience enough information to be able understand what this thing called capital qaeda's so so obviously fusion has hurt itself in in how the q. capital q. has been interpreted in the community or in public mark said a commercial fusion. Reactor will need a queue of about forty four times the queue of.

Stakeholder volkswagen's soon to decide on the future of their luxury brand begetting oliver blum who's volkswagen's management board member and ceo of porsche said today now porsche is boss. Oliver bloom early vitiates. There were intense discussions. On what the heck do we do with gatty. Well however you say that in german and those discussions were ongoing but at the time earlier this year roommate was described as being a good technological fits adding the decision will be made in the first half of the year. Well whereabout three days away from the first half of the year being over. Watch this space links to electricity. Msn dot com in the show notes. If you'd like to read more that's mega story right because rematch with the best one in the world. They've doubled their workforce over the last few years from five hundred to one thousand you know. They're not the biggest car company in the well. They've launched the navarro. Which is the new name for the sea on the school to only the second vehicle they've made and again those are vehicles which they don't even keep themselves so they don't have you know a fancy showroom in mata he's like well i'm keeping them zero zero one and that's my because they don't have the money they need to sell all of the 'cause they can make keeping any back for themselves to put up you know in a museum so it's still company the is yes making multi million dollar hyper-cars. Yes doing incredible things with technology and not taking any of that white but still a very small company so i would say in this instance Punching above their weight. I don't say if i can be on between you. And i and i probably wouldn't say if i've always in the same room as the boss of vw grape man. I'm just so pleased that vw didn't just get the checkbook out and byron. I'm so pleased that didn't happen because you get the feeling that they've done. Multi has done what he's done with that company because they've been able to and you know being kind as i can be to all mega-corporations they both move slowly and also the people wanna get fired and so then it have as much entrepreneurial spirit you know pete. Nobody speaks so man. I'm pleased that vw. Just die. We'll we'll buy rack and let them run your gatty site. That's let them stand alone. Let them do that thing. But interestingly let them then run beauty because all come are going to have to go. Ev at some point. It's just wendy do it. Like ferrari lamborghini maserati names. That are so linked. The sound of their petrol engines are going to have to go full electric they. It's not in question. So when do they do that when you gase go. All electric and what kind of began gets made with rimec in judge. I would say a really really good one all right. Let's move on. Let's talk about a massive battery. Going live in the uk this to me by listening to fill alan email this to hello at avenues. Daily dot com a new giant battery storage system for recharging vs going live in today. Creating a blueprint for other towns and cities go net zero the fifty megawatts. Our lithium ion battery is directly connected to the uk's high-voltage transmission network which is run by national grid and recent guests of this podcast on saturday. Last week's special was indeed graham cooper from the national grid. Now there is an eight kilometer private wire delivering power from the battery to ev charging locations that gets distributed around the city of oxford including the uk's largest public challenging hub that has up to ten megawatts of power on site that features thirty eight ultra rapid charging stations and fast charging stations delivering the energy to av drivers. Night and day. It's oxford's park and ride and it opens later this year. Fast ned installing ten charges at the hub. They are going to be three hundred. Kilowatts the really fast high-powered charges. So unless you own a audi each. Gt or an ionic. Five or six sleigh off of those ones because your car can charge on a slower one but those cars need the false charges. Matt allen is the ceo of pivot power. The company behind this power is an etf company now and they are doing. I think pivot power that talk about that charging house. They want to build some of the most interesting and also to do with mega battery. Storage projects was interesting. Things thinking outside the box in this country They have led the one million pound government backed scheme and matt said quote. This is the first grid scale battery to directly connect to the transmission network of the uk and represents a key milestone for the completion of the energy super hub in oxford our mission to accelerate the uk to net zero planning forty similar sites around the country and quite goes back now by that parent company. If you wouldn't bet against them. I'll pop linked to fleets europe where i got that story from if you would like to read more about the oxford super hob i'd also edf renewables ownership of pivot. Pal you can find them. Pivot dash power dot co dot uk. Okay let's talk about what they're doing in oxford. The park and ride provides fifty points catering for range. Visa speeds visitors can charge in minutes if they need to stay with their vehicle or going into work for the day or shopping. In the city they can charge on a much slower level to charger. It says a connection to the national grid high voltage network with the hybrid battery storage system as maury vs hit the road. We need more battery storage but more energy generation but also more choice of to charge. And that's a that's a public education job like a little podcast to try and teach people about issues. But you can do that as well as you make. People who may be buying electric car one day or your neighbor bison eva and you know you can have those conversations about how when where and to charge. And if you're leaving your car for hours on end sticky on a seven kilowatt post. And i think i i told you. The story on the podcast. Last week i went to an insult. Georgia may here. Which is fifty kilowatt fast charger and there was a renos zoe on it which was full zoe. So is one of the ccs plug obviously because they panicled plugs. Those instable units. Do i say something to the owner of zoe. Dude you're nine thousand nine percent and you're blocking dc fast charging now. I didn't need the charge because it was local to me if someone was driving through dorset and they needed that charger stuffed. There's a guy nine thousand nine percent left is gone. He was on a night where he was like left the car huge education job. And that's the responsibility so many levels all right moving on. Let's talk about tesla's full. Self-driving beater. I don't talk about it. A lot on this podcast. Because you know. There're people who are big fans of elon musk's promises and there are people.

I purchase two hundred megawatts night for this time period. A week out one of my widget makers falls apart so now. Oh i don't need fifty megawatts of that. I can actually bid that. Fifty as the manufacturer i bid that fifty megawatts weekend advanced back into the market and the price i get for it is based on. What's going on right. So you paid twenty four and its bid fifteen and you just want to get. You'll take the five dollars law. It's like the five dollars. That's that's that's fair. I mean So your question is is. I'm not done all right. I'm not done yet right now. So yeah you take you might affect five dollar loss but you may also make money. "Number one Thomas want to kind of walk us through it we're gonna you know will close the plant twenty twenty two no more coal what will we have instead of coal come twenty twenty two I know raise dying to throw in the words moving at some point I'm gonna let him favorite word Lou the okay because I'm smooth what we're gonna smooth in three hundred fifty megawatts of solar okay so that that includes one that one of the largest solar facilities in the met and the west to be bill where it will be built halfway between here in Farmington okay and then on whose land it'll be private land okay and then so random chancellor light brook that part of five fifty yeah moral Crown Point is kind of okay towards that direction or he would it's not the middle no place but so there's three hundred megawatts there and then there's a forty megawatt battery that's that's that's a company that that yeah and then there is and then there's another fifty megawatts of some hickory a tribe land and I thought I was going Albuquerque there the others to project a project other they're identical projects one goes to the Albuquerque and the other entities and then the second one replaces will be distributed it doesn't have to go back up the third one county no right yeah and then there were the hickory is get out of it they get economic development good yeah no no no it's a good day they get our though the powers come into paean and customers okay so that it's just a business development for they get revenue out of yeah they get written about yeah that's a it's a good deal there are great business community so we love doing business with them okay then there's a twenty megawatt battery that as attach that fifty megawatts as well and those are all non non utility owned and then there's another seventy megawatts of battery there look in the Albuquerque area and those would be utility owned and those are more reliability kind of resources that quick response ancillary services for our customers and then there is the two hundred eighty make lots of gas that's in San Juan county that's the be located to be built correct to be built right yeah and yeah and Richard can I just say it because that you know you did say rightly so that environmental environmentalists would be concerned about that but I want people to understand what kind of gas we're talking about we're not talking about a gas plant that is use natural gas to boil water twenty four hours a day and and spin a turbine these are jet engines basically that you can use to Rev up at a moment's notice in Rev down so that way they really work well with renewables because as that cloud goes over the sun you can smooth the energy by revving up naked in there by revving up those right so that by reading other those engine all peaking plants are exact at their new flexible gas right here so so they're very different yeah but they don't burn off all the bad molecules correct you're right but one of the things that they do is that you're not burning natural gas twenty four hours a day to keep water right and then second you're using them as you need them and it allows us to put more renewables on the system it'll let me ask you let me ask you are we a hundred percent convinced Mister engineer hundred percent convinced that we do need a gas fired peaking plant I am yes yeah and I I think it speaks to the reliability in the transition we're going through so I think there's a number aspects about the gas plant that are important one is it's it's important to this transition in this is a transition which is people say this is California do in California the rate you're gonna go to the roof note we're transitioning so this is a gas plant very it's it's a back up if you say the color back up if you would very low a generation if you would but it's there to meet those reliability some do meet those response time just in case just just just in case if you would and then that allows us to bring in batteries and then as you look at battery technology there still some issues with better technology we've seen some fires like in Phoenix right fire explosion heard some fire fighters there are still some issues with the technology is it integrates the system and then also you look at the price of battery technology in the next five years ten years that's gonna drop significantly so what it does it allows us to bring that on keep the costs will make that balance if you would cost environmental responsibility but then keep the system reliable forgot that flexibility in our system we can keep bringing renewables on the system so I can wear what we're gonna do though as were depreciating that bass plan out quickly so we were gonna buy buy twenty forty twenty forty gone yeah no longer in use twenty fourteen zoom mean assuming better technology and renewable technologies knowledge is more reliable and cheaper we're we're we're looking at the trend forward and we're we're confident to where we are so many that it that it progresses but we've got a lot of smart people at the national labs working on that and we stay in close contact talking about national lambs white people in other stores of energy where does Powell's Verde plan at this yes currently Pat we're certain currently Palo Verde supplies about thirty percent of our energy into Mexico for PM and obviously this carbon free what with that this plan is not the social repelled already so we'll look at Palo Verde valley releases the other things as we get to the next part of the process which is our integrated resource plan which is started this month as well but tell Verde does currently provide electricity to New Mexico yes but you guys you guys just about three up on some leases on that correct no that it left twelve months or so there's leases are coming due that we have to make an announcement on the early next year and I think that's the contention you've heard in the news but again what we need to do is we need to go through the next round of their integrated resource plan and they kind of make that assessment if you would and and what you heard or any chance it any chance we we cut off Palo Verde you know because I mean this is been a big point can controversy lot of people because it's very expensive its nuclear all I am people say well you know Pan Am is a major owner in Palo Verde and the rate payers are gonna end up paying for the decommissioning apparel for yeah I mean as we are paying for the decommissioning of San Juan yes we will have to pay for the decommissioning of four corners yeah there's a lot of a lot of misinformation out there and for nuclear plant what you do in the Nuclear Regulatory Commission requires all owners to fund a the decommissioning trust fund as you go so so so there's not even putting money in escrow so with that putting money in escrow for the decommissioning of of Palo Verde yes Sir this will not be an additional expense you guarantee you promised cross your heart and hope to die seriously well I'll I'll speak to the regulators a regular set the requirements and requirements are to fully fund the trust fund so there you go I mean I I don't predict whether either but all right so let's back up here yeah let's recap the first half hour we haven't heard yelling you tell yeah I know I know it's wrong second half hour it's going to get these gonna get bloody recap it has to be cost effective it's going to it's going to cost us a little bit more in a few years even admitted that Albuquerque journal story I think quoting you right yes it will the cost will increase in the future that's right but initially is going to save us about seven Bucks a month correct would plan one with plan one one of four all right has to be reliable yes it has to be in some sense environmentally friendly that's help us meet the R. P. S. schools that are stated in the energy transition act in those of the renewable portfolio standard to tell us how much renewables we have have on our system and when we haven't spoken about yet it also has to make money for the shareholders of piano right absolutely and you know one of the things that I'm very proud of the fact is that P. in and gave up a hundred and nine million dollars to help this transition and help save customers money through this transition but you're actually right shareholders help fund the capital investments that are needed so the first thing you do is laying in a back what yeah when you want to build something you go to investors and say we want to build this will you find it and just like anybody else they want to get that they'll give us the money to build it they want to rip they want that money back in a return alright we'll get to plans to three and four and other issues when we return it is now.
