Does Exercise Really Affect Metabolism?

"Often people say in the past. It's been a bit of a common belief that if you exercise you'll speed up your metabolism. That one hundred percent depends on what type of exercise and what. Your metabolism is adapted to do in the first place. So fuel preferences has your body got before you exercised what fuel preference have you instigated during exercise which is based on the top of exercise. And then what you do after the exercise as well so There's so many layers but let's let's just digging a little bit where. The exercise helps or hinders white loss for example metabolism. If we're talking about calories in calories out and simply if i ate less i will lose white. And if i exercise than exercises a great way to lose weight and eight less move more theory has been around a really really long gone and it doesn't work for a lot of paypal and in the general population. It's not working at all that general theory or that general recommendation in government guidelines. So let's think about what happens to a seventy kilogram famous approximately in thirty minutes of exercise. Approximately one hundred calories of bent so if they just going for a gentle walk in a chat thirty minutes. Moderate exercise approximately two hundred calories a bun and thirty minutes. Vigorous exercise approximately three to three fifty calories. Abun now if we look at the food intake one apple one hundred calories. One egg seventy five calories grams of chicken breasts. One hundred and seventy calories one cup of milk so if you got a lot i after you walk one hundred and fifty calories so let's say it was two weeks then pretty much all of these as around one hundred one. Hundred and fifty calories is an apple. Two eggs hundred grams of chicken breast or a cup of milk. He's all going to pretty much main. That you've got a walked for an hour thirty minutes to forty five minutes of walking just to have that one little snack so if you walk and then you did snack then you balance that but this is not about calories. I want to say everything that just said. He's completely relevant and wrong. Because this is not about calories in calories out that was an example of why the eight less move more does not work well in terms of trying to burn the fact that you have stored on your

Is Sugar Bad For You?

"Without further ado, I'm going to bring in our guest today. She is our registered Dietitian joining us on the show again is Debbie James how're you doing debbie I am grand. Thank you very much. All right. Good. Thanks for joining us on the phone here. So I guess right off the bat will jump into it. The big one that people ask is sugar bad for you. Is it bad? Loaded question. I like to give you the loaded one's. GonNa break it down. I'm going to say sugar naturally present in foods is usually fine but the over consumption of added sugar that linked to cardiovascular disease and obesity and cholesterol of not to mention inflammation oxidative stress. So those types of conditions are what added sugar is related to as far as the research goes Particularly, you know pretty vascular disease and it's really oftentimes the higher percentage of calories from added sugar. It's not just that you had them at how much that you had or that the sweet and beverages like seven servings or more per week. That are linked with the mortality from cardiovascular disease. So it matters when we're talking about what kind of sugar and how much right. So you could say excess sugar is bad for you. Can you say that we're yeah, you can say that but natural sugar. So I don't think that there are too many people that have just had an overabundance of raw fruit. that. Were hard pressed because you're getting the antioxidants and you're getting fiber and you're you get all those other things that are beneficial right? Right. The kind of bounce it out and it's probably hard to eat so much food that you would like just way go in excess of your sugar needs. It is so low in calories. Oh my gosh. I went to get like a smoothie. One of the you know maybe places in it a sixteen ounce smoothie had three hundred, sixty calories mike well, definitely not going to be sitting down eating eight apple. You know if I were to just turn to some raw fruit and sit down and chew, it's Never I. It's just not gonna add up that. Much right. Right. So are there are there are there different types of sugars though I there's like the wall stuff you get out of fruits and vegetables but is there you know like what's the additive the different ones? Are there different types early, those are those are like big picture group, their sugars I'm going to narrow it down and get a little. So chemically speaking sugar is either just one like ring of carbohydrate called a Amano ride or sugar also refers to some are two of linked together called a Diet Thac. Hope I hope our listeners at home or taking notes. Okay. We're be a quiz at the end for sure. It only makes little difference because let's say that that glucose blood sugar okay. Brick brick toast is fruit. Sugar. But sucrose table sugar the white crystalline stuff on your table it made of Glucose and fructose. The competent. Okay. That's one of the double sugars right So the reason that makes a difference. Is that the single sugars? They get a short they just they don't need to be broken down or anything. Whereas if you eat a longer sugar, we still call him simple sugar in the Diet but if you need a longer sugar or if you eat a complex carbohydrate like dark from rice or pasta corn potatoes. Your system needs to take time to break that down into its individual tiniest a small little piece to get gored and guess what? That's a sugar interesting. Okay. So because you got because it all right interesting. It's almost like how you just broke down sugar. It took a little longer. But it wasn't as simple to digest as but it was but it did make sense in the end. Okay. That's interesting. So like the if it's the combination, it almost like your body has to pull that apart and then digested. So it's like all right we gotta we gotta take this bar before we can use it. If. It's already we're calling it a sugar whether it's from honey or maple syrup or whatever it like a fraction leg. It is so so so fat birth is you had a bowl of cereal and you're gonNA break down that brand flake that takes a lot longer. Right, okay. It turns it turns to blood sugar even if there's no sugar in it. I don't know if that. Hydrate confused. That's true though you can look at your label of I have some Rice Pilau and it says zero grams of sugar. But I know that it will raise my blood sugar. Two cups of it. You know. Because your body breaks it down digestion. You've got them in time, and then like I said, you clean it down to its very smallest. Piece Particle and Adore Bet and that you're. Going Okay So are there with when it comes to sugars? Are there actually could you deem some sugars healthy for you? Or is it just? are between the different sugars are some more healthy for you than others Okay well, we mentioned natural sugar I think I should Kinda sorta define what what added sugar is. Okay. So if you think of added sugar as something as an ingredient that that's in food in the processing and preparation or added to the food at the table that's really meant as as a sweetener sweetener. Okay. The things that things on the label you might see they could be dextrose could be brown sugar it could be powdered sugar, corn syrup it could be invert sugar lactose, all these names. that. Are within the food those are added but let's say you're looking at fruited yogurt and you feed that there's milk and there's strawberries and boo, there are going to be some grams of sugar. Those are the natural one from the milk and the strawberry, but there may also be some of these other dextrose and. added. In addition to really didn't. Make it a more pleasurable eating experience or drinking experience off to make it. Yeah. To make you crave it. Provides structure and baked good. They, they actually have a a role to play and architecture if you will. I was just thinking been. Yes. I was GONNA use that word. That's funny. Yeah. That's interesting So going. So that's the definition but going back to your question are some like better for you than others are considered healthy. So if you think of natural sugars, they're better for you consumed in their original food source but just bruder milk because of the other nutrition you get with them like I mentioned, fiber calcium, protein, vitamin, C, or D. And you could even say, okay well, what about more purified natural sources like honey or maple syrup are Garvey there's still condiments but. let's say honey it's known to have antimicrobial antioxidant properties and it's a natural cough remedy though if I was going to put them sweetener mit then. I might preference choose honey. Okay. So that's okay that kind of I think touches on like whether. Natural, Rossouw, better for you. But how how much sugar are we talking about that? You should have on a daily basis? What how much should be in your daily Diet? In. General. Okay their recommendation, Perm, lots of different. You know organizations so and and it's because we have found that American adults and children. We consume more than fifty percent of our calories from added sugars and mostly it's from sweetened beverages followed by credited desserts and baked good categories so. I thought. That percents champion many. Oh I it's taking the place of nutrition food right. Did you. Did you say fifteen percent or fifty percent. Keen fifteen. Okay. The first time I heard fifty and I was just like what? Okay fifteen still high feel high. Yeah Okay I'm glad we clarify that. Okay. Continue to help the another would be extraordinary. So the Institute of Medicine, they recommend that added sugar take up less than twenty five percent or a quarter of your total calorie rich like you know it's up there the American Heart Association recommends limiting your added sugar. They offer it a different way. They do it less than a hundred calories per day for women. So that's about sixty spoon or a hundred and fifty calories a day for men, which is about ninety burns. Yet the World Health Organization they recently issued new guidelines stating that only five percent of a person to total daily calories should come from sugar

"First Up, we have a lot of warm products which hopefully remained warm. Before we try them first up. We have Kellogg's brand new waffles in fun flavors. I have to say, I was like freaking out we have two flavors to try today but there was a third flavor we didn't get that was super cute. The flavors were trying our Unicorn which tastes like cotton candy and birthday cake, which is yellow cake with rainbow. Sprinkles. These are not only available at Walmart. They're also at target Safeway and more and what I noticed about these is that they're very large large like the size of rigging frozen waffles do smell amazing they really do. And I, also GONNA say usually frozen waffles tastes the same I have high hopes for these I think these are gonna be different. What are you trying I? What's the Yellow One? Is What the Unicorn? Birthday. Look it looks like a birthday. Okay. Let's go birthday cake. Okay. That tastes like a birthday cake. These are really moist. They taste like cake. That's really good and the stats are really not bad hundred and thirty calories per waffle two and a half grams of fat five smart points. But I want to say one thing like these are not I feel like in the past like four or five weeks, we've tried a lot of frozen waffles. And they're all the same even the ones who trader Joe's that are Pumpkin flavored. There's something about this waffle. That's a little special do agree. Yeah. Definitely, and I was just noticing that you don't need butter or Maple Syrup on that. I mean this is just fine by itself. You know I totally grandma try the Unicorn cotton catches interesting because they have such perfectly deep wells. What do you call those nooks and crannies? what do you call in English mapping it is. Yeah. Waffle House. Yeah. They're really Nice deep-sea coach and a lot of Sierra remade ours pacman. Oh cute wait. What are the little dots in this one? Sheri's berries I think right and cotton candy. I like the birthday cake more. Yes, that's amazing. These are amazing. Kellogg's makes eggo right. But these are not under the eggo brand I. Don't think are they know? They're not. So you don't have to leg that is really interesting for her. Nope you don't have to go your Lego Mike. Okay next we are trying this is a product that I find very exciting and unique foster farms. The chicken people they have a new product called bold bites. They're marketed as kids bowl by. So they're like you get these in the fridge section and they're small individually wrapped packs like pouches of chicken and they come in flavors we have Taco and pizza today and what I really love about these portion controlled. It's sort of like saying, Hey, kids you can snack on chicken like like from being I would just dump this pouch. It tastes good into super on top of a salad it's fifty calories worth-a-chicken. Looks Amazing what are we trying? Why did you get all the fun flavors like Taco, Pizza, I can't open. which WANNA restarting with them pastor, which can open pizza Jamie can open I. Don't have the strength. s these high in sodium. No. Not really right. Three clear to read the sodium for those of us who don't have our reading. It's three fifty, which is not terribly. No this is good. I would not say tastes like pizza but I would put this on a pizza at fifty calories worth. Let's see. We got spicy lally trion. That's good but I feel like it's a stretch to call at pizza. Wait I a little bit of like Italian seasoning. Okay. Yeah. No I like it I like the concept I like creative. Let's try the TACO. Just I'm impressed and it tastes like white meat chicken breast doesn't taste like unidentifiable parts of a chicken. TACO measure making tacos. That is excellent first of all. This is what I would do. I would take those new cauliflower Ortega Taco shells that they sent us same thing and I would just like loaded up and make a chicken Taco out of this. Don't goods while he? Put it over, put it over cauliflower rice and then scuba salsa. These? This is great. This particular flavor. Terrific I don't WanNa give any preliminary ratings but it will rate. Hi.

"Okay, don't shoot the Messenger on this one. Has just come out with Turkey dinner candy corn. So it's slipped candy corn, the normal candy corn that we know. It's a mixed bag with six different flavors. So the flavors are Turkey Green Bean, stuffing cranberry, sauce, ginger, glazed carrots, and sweet potato pie. They've been spotted at walgreens and as weird as they sound try them. All right. Well, Brock's is like the candy my grandmother used to eat. So I'm used to that company they I think they're kind of like biting into a Jones Soda did with their remember they made those specialty they probably still do they make their thanksgiving. Soda. This sounds weird. I do WANNA try every single one of these flavors I know they're all going to be disgusting. Well, I would totally try them me too I. Think the cranberry sauce, the ginger glazed carrots, and the sweet potato pie could be Yummy Greens and stuffing green beans candy corn the wonder if they're going to be sweet, we'll have to we have to get our hands on a bag of maybe say something nice about them. They'll send them to. We Love Brock's and did that in the breaking rocks. If we If we have like a bunch of the green beans does that count as a vegetable? Absolutely, and carrots. Kinda like Jelly belly does this to with like they have like buttered popcorn they have some savory on flavors. So weird but a good novelty thing to bring to someone's house and try. E for effort. Okay. So it looks like Uber is getting into the grocery delivery service business. It's already started in a few cities and should be rolling out throughout the rest of the country in a few months and it's available through your Uber App sued us open up the APP and the groceries available. You can order groceries through Uber I. Love that because Insta- card has become my life and I, love grocery delivery more than anything and I will try Uber Uber User. So I've tried Uber eats and that's great. The more people that want to bring me groceries without having me leave the house. The better told her wonderful lift is gonNA. Follow. Suit. Probably. Probably I cannot wait honestly do you guys use the grocery delivery services exclusively? Yeah. Amazon fresh and INSTA- cart like three or four times a week. Amazing and I've been ordering for my mom too which is a whole other story that I will probably get into later. Okay. We should get I think I actually had this idea. I want to start sending certain things to my mom with her INSTA- card orders and having her review them on the podcast I. Think it would be funny. The best thing I've ever heard. MAZING. All right. We might do that flew choose. All right. We're about to jump in to these products that have been delivered. Some of them seem weird. There's only one product I think out of all of these products that actually or maybe two that I've heard of that look familiar and I've only tried one so I cannot wait this first product is something that is totally new to me. I've heard of p being me but this is pbs me powder chocolate hazelnut spread. So I was envisioning it to be a little bit like powdered new tele kind of right like a powdered peanut butter and you tell, yeah, it's. Exactly. It's like powder peanut butter, but it's powdered hazelnut instead and then it's yeah. Two tablespoons, fifty calories to grams of fat. So the stats are amazing. Four grams of protein. I. Don't know Jimmy, you probably know this mark. It's one smart point. Amazing. Okay. So I have mixed it up with some waterman about to try it. It looks like new Tele Ish. Okay. I'm not a hazelnut fan and I really like that It's nutty. It's I've tried like almond powdered almond butter and I did not like it at all. The Hazelnut is better I have to say, I made a second version and I added cocoa. Like amp up the chocolate flavor I was gonNA, say. Yours. Looks so dark. It's really good. I added like, did you add Dr Cocoa I added my. Gear Deli Coco, which I think is dark, but it's like majestic and then I added a little more sweetener to it because I really wanted to amp it up and it's great. I'm just going to sit here and eat the whole bowl. This looks like Mustang. The consistency of years now it's Yummy wally is sitting here like dying to I. Not Allowed. I like a lot. I'm GonNa put it on Yogurt. It's really good. It's like if you like hazelnut, this would be a great dip like you could even add chocolate little mini chocolate chips to it, and and like dip little cookies in it. I'm impressed with it. You could make a dip like we sometimes do with Like light whipped topping stirred into a tub. I think if you're a hazelnut fan, you will love this. Do you think it tastes like New Tyler? I don't have like a strong. Taste memory of new tele. I think because I'm not really a huge fan. I think you tell is really way more wretched. A A. Watered down version of new tele when you add the cocoa to it, yeah. No Pun intended with water down when you add the cocoa to it, it definitely helps and you only need a tiny bit of water. So just to remind people with this is it's like a powder and then you add a little water and you mix it up and it becomes the texture of. Peanut butter spread Gu I. Bet it would be good and smoothies to great. It would be great. Cool. The next item we have is also it's yet another nut butter powder but this is a more traditional peanut butter powder by La Canto and Jamie you know more than I do but Canto they make a lot of the they're like a monk fruit sweetener company that makes A ton of different sweetener options that are really good I think. Yeah and monk fruit. If anybody doesn't know it's like the new Stevia. It's like a natural zero calorie or low calorie sweetener and made by Tony, Shalhoub, character monk. Mike he had a safe. He just no, but it's okay. You can make all the peanut butter jokes you want my. You have a free pass you're allowed. So this is just do they usually make products. Are they mostly sweetener based the things that I'm familiar with are mostly sweetener based they might have some other. We'll have to look. Okay. So we'll look we'll look at that Lepanto. They're a trusted company I. Love the fact that this is like a pouch of powdered peanut butter. The stats are very good. It's like some powder peanut butter. The stats are a little higher I don't know why or how that would be because basically, they're just the same thing but fifty calories, two tablespoons and it has monk fruit. So it's not gonNA be unsweetened like some of the powder peanut butters right but no sugar added

The Afterburn Effect

"The often burn effect. It's also known as excess post exercise oxygen consumption or epoch. For Shaw as mentioned it's basically referring to the increased quantity of calories burned off you exercise so once you exercise your body needs to perform a number of tasks to help it recover and this includes the replenishment of oxygen stolis replenishment off. Atp stores removal of or that lactic acid and repairing your muscles and all of these processes require oxygen so oxygen consumption. Roy Solved you exercise. It costs energy and say additional calories are burned above the resting rate. And there's something known as the oxygen debt that occurs after intense exercise which is usual body requiring more oxygen than the body can take him properly through breathing so basically physical activity as you know increases the muscles demand for oxygen on this oxidises cobs and fights producing the energy required for movement. The demand of the human body for oxygen increases proportionately with the intensity of your workouts. I DIDN'T OR TO PAY OFF THAT OPTION. I mentioned and restore the balance in your body. The body needs a few more hours recovery. And in that time it can seems more than ten leads is an extra oxygen thus burning more calories post workout looking at this in depth a study called the effects of exercise intensity on on the excess post exercise oxygen consumption found the also bud effects climaxes in the first hour following exercise and declines thereafter and it can lost anywhere from ten to seventy two hours. "Eating less and moving more doesn't have side effects he told yeah right and I need a quote on the board so the problem is when people are like I love it it's working for me because they don't understand right they're not understanding how it's taxing their level to do this they're not understanding how packing their thyroid how it's affecting their brain chemistry in their mood they're not understanding that these kind of guys that are extremely high in iron and saturated fat shortened lifespan they create more free radical damage which is oxidative stress early age here faster V. shorten your telomeres which is a little strand cap on the end of your DNA at makes salary did pay and literally your cells macromolecules are made up of protein fat carbohydrates and you quit gasket so when we're depriving the body of carbohydrates long term we're creating a PH balance in the body that is more acidic not to be confused with something called keto acidosis which is deadly but when you think about you don't think this way I don't like when you remove your nail Polish that's that's a pizza so our bodies making more the stuff it's changing the PH balance an hour that'll don't function as well in a very acidic environment and that is the gift of the iceberg yeah and so when people say like you don't know that you're just a fitness experts think I have written eight best selling book you think I write them a lot your walk they're always written with the appropriate doctors according to the subject matter there heavily researched and I don't make any money I don't have any agenda telling you Hey this is dangerous I can't eat less move more shows yeah like I I don't have an agenda I'm just warning it is a very dangerous thing to do for an extended period of time if you tried it for thirty days and you did but on the plant based all organic and stopped after that I would say okay that is the absolute limit on it but really honest to god the it will be a little less use common sense you're free choices move a little more and you'll get fantastic results you don't have to do right I mean any name was sugar you're not a big sugar Ivan can obviously if you are not over eating right then you don't have to worry about it so of course they don't love people doing processed white sugar it's it's terrible for you we just did it however let's say were eating eighteen hundred calories a day and we're going all right of these eighteen hundred I'm gonna make eighty percent better choices you know I mean I have the friggin aid why the whole grain toast for breakfast I'm gonna happen exactly not bad for you name it yeah I mean I have your word and very soon yeah I mean you make the better choice eighty percent of the time and the twenty percent of the time like I can have because I'm gonna have to go out anyway yeah and is longer you working in few your calorie allowance for the day how much you can eat with our game right so you basically if you're trying to maintain your weight you eat as much as you burn it's sort of like balancing exasperating but how do I know how much you should burn everyone is different well here's a great guy for you everyone can go on the internet networks did Google B. M. R. calculator that's legal metabolic rate and you can enter some basic information your age your height your gender your weight and this is going to give you a number right but it's going to be rough it's not perfect but it's it's pretty darn I use ready accurately with thousands of people or tech so why don't they do so they go to Google and they put in B. M. our calculator and they're gonna enter some very basic information it'll say like your age your gender your height your weight how much and it's going to spread out a number right so let's say mine thirteen hundred now that number is how many calories Lightbody birth involuntary bodily functions over the course of the day meaning if I just sat on the couch that's what you got rid of you got it exactly now we don't work we do nothing all day long so we're gonna pick an activity level I'm gonna give you for activity levels right level one you sit at a desk all day long you're very sedentary level two let's say you work as a car sales person and you're on your feet a little bit you're standing or walking around a bit you're you're not totally sedentary you're not overwhelmingly active that's the issue level three you are a fitness trainer you're very physical you know you're doubling exercises are hosting weight level for your construction worker you're extremely physical right now we're not we're not counting exercise right now right does your life your level right so I personally would be a three so it might be the metabolic rate is thirteen hundred and I am a level three I'm gonna take a one and a decimal point and put it before my level of this get re one point three if you're too with one point and you multiply that your your PMR number to my number would be thirteen hundred one point three and that's going to give me a darn accurate number and how many calories I. burn a day without fitness so I'm right around sixteen hundred and which is a lot hi Mary this way it was small private fiber calories well you're looking at if you look at it that way yeah you got a look at it that way right so it I like to use money is an example of money earning six hundred sixteen hundred and thirty caps you can earn fifty calories whatever I don't get to spend more than that I don't get the more than that stored as fat so now we're just gets a little tricky right how little kind of person he so if you're like whoa holy cow more eating thirteen hundred which isn't that much food enable the burning sixteen hundred if you need to lose thirty five hundred calories he got a burden thirty five hundred dollars more than you consume to lose one pound it'll take you like ten eleven days to move out and this is where people get really discouraged but what they're not understanding is eight there are no longer going to be there not even standing still it's still lonely rolling back but in order to move this thing this ball down the field at a decent clip you got it because that is going to take my sixteen hundred miss sixty number right and if you have to show me that twenty two twenty three hundred if I do you good thirty to forty minutes in the gym that day so not where people died they they try the diet without the fitness they count the calories they're so hungry the scale not budging it's not budging and they get super frustrated they start looking to god then they start to give up any creed it's really bad pattern or your yo yo dieting because you're messing with your metabolism and that is the key the key is figure out what your active metabolic rate is you know like what your allowance and he asked don't eat over that your under absolutely do not eat under twelve hundred calories if if you're trying to lose weight just don't you'll screw up your metabolism that the hungry you'll be miserable that is the absolute for with unlimited greens and then you can get many of those and not worry about counting calories green veggies and then if you want the way you could come up faster find a little more often that is the key to weight loss I'm talking to Jillian Michaels who's got this app called my fitness and you can get it on her website Jillian Michaels dot com or any of the apple or Google play app stores you can put it on your iPad your iPhone your apple

"What's the difference between fasting fasting and fast mimicking the first thing most people would view as just water? Okay the water. Only fasting could be US effective. Do but at the same time. It puts the patient at risk for all kinds of problems hypoglycemia hypertension Law Salts in the in the system etc etc.. And so the festival diet. Give us an opportunity to basically standardized diet to make sure. The patient does not have these problems now. How many calories is they're being consumed during a fasting mimicking diet? Well festive Megan Diet. Is there are many versions. Because you know we have a version for out immunities Version for Alzheimer Birth for cancer vary in the clinical trials but Simpler four days is very low. Calorie starts about six seven hundred calories and goes down to three hundred. We want to get him four days And the reason for it is to really be adjustable to all the conditions that they chemotherapy. No the therapies are carried out and The the one for regular people is. He's eleven hundred calories and they won going to seven hundred and fifty three hundred calories and two three four five The one for our immunity seven days long and and it's similar to the one for regular people are very different content Alzheimer is about fourteen hundred calories. They won And then it goes down to Nine hundred nine hundred and fifty calories and so we're adjusting based on the age conditioned frailty and many the different needs for healthy people. Are you putting yourself through a fasting mimicking diet in some sort of cycle. Yeah I do it twice a year twice a year In in the reason for that is I normally have a very good diet. Especially -Tarian Remember fish couple times a week and then just Vegan. The rest of the time So Oh I think it's That's about all I need to do that. You're Italian do you still drink wine. Drink wine. Yes how does that happen coffee. The and there's no animal in in wine true true but it's it's definitely not Low sugar no wine wine I mean people if you look at the Meta analysis and I'll goal consumption up to five servings a week is actually either neutral or a little bit. Ah slightly positive and lifespan. So unless you have all the risk factors for for Diseases for which. Alcohol is also respect than than you than alcohol is fine in within this this consumption limits.

happy nature if if by nature you're just not a happy person I gonna be happy the answers you fight you major everything in life that you develop is fighting or nature do you know this is the reason that I worry the biggest worry I have about the the America is is really about this the the lack of wisdom is going to kill us not people's mean this four four just a mate ed majors but lack of was the lack of wisdom is the same as leaving for bad as bad intentions people don't understand anymore with the did throughout American history I would say till the early twentieth century you raise children to fight their natures that's what character development is about that's what happiness development is about and then the fools took over mainly academics almost everything out of the university has been stupid and this was one of them the the implication being clearly that you know I remember I read to you from the New York Times The New York Times had a piece by an academic nutritionist and she wrote don't put your child on a diet let your child's natural innate wisdom about food determined your child eat wisdom about food inmate how do you write something that stupid the the innate wisdom about food and all of us is another ice cream cone I only had three I the other day and I live in airports so I I was I count calories moral us thank you very little and which is fine is I don't feel deprived or anything just just noting what I'm telling you there was a box you know these these mixtures of Eminem is in chocolates and nuts and raisins so there was a little a medium size box of it it said calories one hundred and fifty per serving hundred fifty calories is minimal nothing how many servings however were in that box sold one eighth of that box a hundred and fifty calories what is eight times one hundred and fifty twelve hundred that means that box contains twelve hundred calories which is almost a day's worth of calories and I remember things was thrust that yesterday arriving at the Houston airport I would think he there is no question I could eat that box no question with joy SO zero that's life if you don't teach your kids life is composed of a battle with the self this is very little hope for your child on any level and that's true for happiness so if you don't have a happy disposition you fight it it's a simple as that all right let's go The Target Food Haul Episode

"Today we have target hall target we went to target some of US did some of us are just being surprised by what we got thanks apprised for one of the first times I can't wait very exciting I feel like we're making up for last time because we didn't eat anything last week on the podcast now we have like two times as many things yeah we're eating every okay so I want to jump right in but you've got something for us I assuming do all right target just launched its biggest grocery brand ever it's called good and gather now the idea behind gooding gather is great food made with quality ingredients that you can have on the table fast so there's no artificial flavors no synthetic colors are official sweeteners or high fructose Corn Syrup and they have more than two thousand items ranging from organic snacks for Salad Mixes and in meals but two thousand that's like almost grocery store in its own right like it's crazy wow that's that's amazing and I actually like that name gooding gather sometimes these names are just kind of cheesy it's like this I don't want to I don't want to offend anybody but they simply also how different is this because they had simply balanced right those are the ones that they still have that it's a little different I'm not sure sounds like you need it sounds cool trying some today right Excited amy would it know though I glanced ahead because I thought we might get that question are we trying today we're excited no working so we're going to just jump right and where are you going to start today by the way with fridge finds things that you find in the refrigerated section at target we're going to refrain from calling at target the people still know people that that I don't know we don't we don't say that here it's tar get forget so the first thing we are starting with archer farms stuffed chicken breasts cutlets and they are stuffed with you wanNA guess Mozzarella and gloves close asparagus John Cheddar each piece has only one hundred seventy calories five grams of fat twenty nine grams of protein three smart points we added uh-huh were points as we did for those who love us and love weight watchers so it takes about twenty five to thirty minutes in the oven you should know this so it's not like a goodin gather it but then you have to cook it cooking but it's hands off time you don't have to do any of the stuffing rolled up this looks like way leaks like a piece of twine line that we're not supposed to eat see it maybe it is I don't know yeah like they tied it up it might be tied up bound and gagged bonus you miss no it's a it's a stuffed chicken breasts let's describe this it's like a chicken breasts that has been seasoned it comes completely raw and then you cook it with you know in the oven it's got the stuff in the middle how are we going to do this we just going to pass around the plate let's rally grabbing I don't see any Cheddar well this cheddar stuffing's a little well it really mostly chicken you know what it is it's like folded on top of it it's not in the middle grab some green beans asparagus spare guy Ma that's really coming very tasty taste fresh I feel like they did a good job seasoning which is a common mistake I know and it's not overly salty it's like a nice tiny touch of Cheddar the tastes they taste good there little overcooked Irby I like it I feel like that's a great dinner option if you're kind of bored with the average chicken dinner so you just pop it in the oven for what like fifteen minutes to thirty Don Juan and then you're done it's awesome but at one hundred seventy calories the stats are really really good so I like this a lot yeah I do like that. They didn't go overboard on the Cheddar because they could have made this fatty fat McFadden could've they didn't they did not do that. 'cause it's archer farms we like archer Barnes and we trust them but that's not is that a target bread exclusively exclusive target simply balanced now good and excellent okay next up this is no evil now remember the less of Lesser Evil or they make snacks right yeah next I like them but this is no evil foods there it's called plant meet that does not sound so appealing but it's no chicken comrade clock shredded strips one hundred thirty calories one gram of fat no evil this premise recommended by the newman sisters yeah it looks a little intimidating I have to be honest with you it looks frightening it looks like Cook Jerky I'm going to try to exactly what it looks like you know chicken plant meet actually hold on I'm Aaron recommend trying it with twenty barbecue sauce really really like it in the skillet per the package directions the texture a little bit odd but it tastes good it tastes like chicken really with us all the way it looks them eat it with your eyes closed Jimmy he's with this barbecue use sauce face for radio do you think lesser evil is annoyed that they didn't think to make themselves no no I don't know because there is no such thing is a snack that's no evil and I think this refers to the fact that no animals are harmed Lawley is shaking to that and approval yes I like it again no evil oh foods plant meat no chicken comrade clock shredded strips that's a mouthful literally and we will link you to their website because it's not just a target what else did they make. Let's see the stallion Italian sausage hit boss pulled pork we can do a rocky reference I'm in this is cool I like this brand I like it no evil thumbs up okay next up we're trying our first good and gather item Yea good and gather mild sweet onion salsa I do like sweet onion I do like salsa mild is okay this one has died Mehta's onion Jalapeno salon show you like Cilantro right I love you're not in the camp where it smell or taste no taste ooh wow brim thin and falling all over my show notes re kind of looks like the Salsa we got from all it does actually it looks like how long I'm GonNa get up and grab from Jamie computer to be eating with carrots I like it it's a little salty two little salty but and it's very very onion but I like it it's it's different I feel like I would use it as a sauce more than US also I would use it both ways I would use it it also depends if you salsa that's more like less chunky big league unique days fresh funky fly and remember we're in the refrigerated section yes ten calories zero fat zero smart points by the way the no evil cluck cluck cluck cluck chicken it had to smart points a bar do very much of Argon okay we are moving on onto a new Yogurt Chill Bonnie Vanilla Greek yogurt with cashew butter. Are you so excited mikey loves Gert I've been waiting for like the yogurts with the the nut butter I tried them no and the stats are really surprisingly reasonable so that they that container that single serve container has one hundred sixty calories six grams of fat and eleven grams of protein at six points okay let slightly high right like it's high in the points department but await Ahmed at it ooh it's got giant swirls while leases making it swirl I am making its swirl look at talented I am is that the nut butter at the bottom is that swirling in I'm trying to mix it around what flavor is this cashew Butter Without Anneli Yogurt Oh okay spoon that is interesting it's interesting because like I'm a huge fan of cashews but I like it and did they have a peanut butter version I wish they did let's say it's not bad is it like it's great I don't know cashew butter is this is so interesting so they have a Hazelnut Butter version with Chocolate Yogurt they have an almond butter version but no peanut it's not bad interesting feels gimmicky it's not amazing do you think it's amazing no and I I love peanut butter like I don't get not a huge cash a fan love cashews I don't get such cashew flavor I don't get a huge vanilla flavor I would not purchase that there's better it's not terrible but there's you better Trapani out there that is true I do Johnny and they have great options that's just okay okay we are onto frozen who's feeling ready to be Um burn out berea prior scarves I up simply balanced organic keen Wa spinach garbanzo beans red peppers and onions seasoned blend okay so this is a meal starter kind of thing and what that means is like you know at some protein comes in a bag it's like a blend of grain and veg and whatever else he wanted to but we're going to try this chemo grain I feel like I heard it was a seed or son they would you like the Quinoa Salad Quinoa Salad I heard that like eight times I was like it's technically a flowering plant Oh she's young all right let's talk calorie count about this show one hundred and fifty calories a cup four and a half grams of fat four grams of fiber five grams of protein four smart points so I would like beef that up with more vegetables and some chicken but it's good I like it more than I thought I would it's well seasoned they did a good job there friends no more not but yeah and more spices if you want not too shabby and that's another house brand so that's exclusive at target simply balance and next up this is not a house brands as a brand from our past del Monte Veggie Veggie and Mozzarella Bites cited for this Oh wow this just seems like a decade the little fine for us it's like an odor of situation it's like a little fried stuff that looks good look at this stuff veggies what type of veggies and Mozzarella five pieces one two three four five they're pretty big five pieces to forty calories seven grams of fat six grams of fiber grams of protein eight smart points I feel like I have to look at it and tell myself it's forty eight calories apiece because to forty s intimidating for it's like a miniature hop pocket that's so it is it's like the world's cutest little pocket it's so good Manuchehr mythology that is really really good here's the thing this is not an everyday food for me this is like a treat food that I taste at work I probably wouldn't have it at my house but it's it's not a bad option especially if you have kids it's a good snack for them it's not unhealthy it's not overly high in

That's the tricky thing though they're saying it's healthier but they're saying that an unrealistic serving size into a food coma like if you have seven hundred fifty calories of this year going for naptime this is knocking you down and yes i would obviously say add more peanut butter because why not and you can buy these pretty much. Everywhere burst are sold. These are not limited edition did marketing during last should find them pretty much anywhere. All these are looking good here. The strawberry ones are there pretzels meantime trying to get the popcorn. It doesn't have pretzels. It has bruce reid strawberries getting very difficult to find the trap strawberry..

Why Metabolism Declines With Age (And How to Reverse It!)

"At blog at l._A.. Fitness Dot Com so what is metabolism exactly well scientifically. You'd call it collectively all the chemical reactions that take place in the body so a metabolic rate would be the rate at which it you those processes are happening so we in terms of what someone would equate that to would be like in calories per day we think of a metabolic rate as calories per day but there are components of it. It's a breakdown are you. I'm curious to know what those are. The biggest one is called resting metabolic rate and so that is just as we're doing here. We are awake and we're sitting so that is all the energy you need to breathe your heart to go <hes> organs to function and to be awake if if you were you know comatose we'd call it basil but really everybody's pretty much awake during the day so we call that resting and that comprises <music> at least seventy percent of your total energy output then there's about a quarter and had various per person but as about a quarter that is the <hes> physical activity component and just because you spend and thirty minute walking and I walk with you for thirty minutes. WE'RE GONNA burn different calories so that varies by person because of their body composition and training level and etc and then there's this tiny little sliver called called and you'll like this. I'm curious mic effective food so there's an actual energy cost to breaking down of processing digesting transporting up taking that your food so if you've ever heard that Oh celery is negative calories. That's the concept that it comes from is like for the three calories. You've got nets talk. You actually live hinder. Bring you down so their components to metabolism cabbalism <hes>. There's three main components right. Isn't that kind of work coury comes from like the that's how they determine how many calories are in food. They will have to look Bernard or something they basically to see how much energy we do. We need to expend to break this thing down Tom exactly and and even the term calorie has to do with heat generation right yeah go into the definition. Don't ask interesting well. At what age does metabolism start slowing down. I've already passed that point is it starts at about thirty but I'd say that it becomes more evidence probably <hes> for women at around fifty in fermented like forty okay so give or take obviously for for different the people it's going to be at different times. Are there ways to reverse that or like. Stop it from happening. You can tell Kansas has been thinking about this for a couple of weeks. You have a birthday recently trying a to stop the aging process in general Debbie. Most of the decline that that comes with age actually has to do with a decline in lean body mass so <hes> the weight gain that people see Middle Age has less to do with the decrease in their metabolism and probably just more to do with sedentary lifestyle and getting too many calories for where they're at okay so that's why it kind of gets. More important that you do start finding ways to exercise the older you get and not just exercise because sometimes that you know the whole concept of okay get my shoes on. Get this special outfit on can sweat in and then spend the specific amount of time in a specific place doing a certain thing. It's physical activity so if I thought if I added up all the things I did when I was young I go. I go to the dog park. I watched my dog. I run with him. Sometimes from end to end I see the other dog parents and they're sitting in the Shays as they're looking at their cell phones I go to the playground at the park and it's the same thing you know. All these kids are climbing on the structures in the running around there giggling and their tagging and the parents are watching so I think we become very much <unk> spectators as we get older and just less participating in physical activity. Oh man that cut deep is like spectators in life. You'll participate in life. Never stolen pass you by Wynn is the last time when the last time you you wrote a bike or walked to the grocery store. Well I get to items that you could carry. I talked to the grocery store almost on a daily basis good for you good for you can't as well tasers. There's this elderly gentleman in my neighborhood that I see of religiously on on a daily basis. He looks like a sweet little Frenchman with his cap and he carries his bag. You know that he gets every day. He's lean you know now. He's he's not a pat on any extra pounds there and I think you know the nature of US driving everywhere contributes not that affects your metabolic rate. I'm just saying that the lack of physical activity as we age compounds pounds the fact that we have less lean body mass and we're not using that quarter of our capacity to affect our calorie burn right so are there ways that you can help increase your metabolism just kind of physical activity well and physical activities the best one because if we say it's the metabolism is all the chemical reactions going on so then you want to build more muscle and you went to burn more fuel so really really what are the two things oh well that's resistance exercise to build muscle and it's the cardio or endurance type exercise to burn more fat. Those are really the big primary things <hes> in order to retain lean body mass and keep your metabolism up and having more muscle on your body you'll just start burning more calories at rest right and so little bit yes it's less than you would think and I don't mean to Papu anybody's you know strength training goals a but when they actually equate the amount of calories burned per pound okay gaining five pounds of muscle is like burning fifty calories a day right another fifty okay oh well if I eat twenty I five hundred fifties like a dry and it's not much but if you were to stop eating something that had fifty calories of value every day I don't know like two pieces of candy or something then after a year you drop five pounds. Fifty calories now makes oh yeah if I could save myself five pounds a year. That would be great. You know it's interesting with metabolism. It makes me like the human body is amazing like I've read about some things where you can over the course of the year. Our bodies are so good at kind of just understanding what we really need I guess and so sometimes you can be within like maybe only gain like a pound but that could be like thirty five hundred calories off or something of what you're you. You really needed that year technically and it seems like it's so amazing over the distance of time like how we kind of naturally equilibrate that way so I could see like we're fifty calories with some extra muscle could make a difference when it's compounded like that and if you have more fat mass it does not play as well. No <hes> fat is metabolic -Ly Different. You know it's not it's not being contracted like skeletal muscle and your body wants to as you said have more homeo- stays ace it wants. It almost wants to stay where it's at so if you've gained ten fifteen twenty pounds over the last couple of decades well your body now wants to maintain where it's at now present rain not where you were and so that I think in fact makes it. Harder tougher keeping keeping weight gain at bay or trying to lose weight once. You've got it right yeah right so it's probably better if you can catch it early start early. Now that you know around what would you say thirty search to slow down so knowing like okay when you get into that mode like bone. Is that the same with bone health to like it starts to peak bone mass is probably in your late twenties or by the time you're thirtyish then really what we're all doing is is trying to forestall the rate of bone loss from getting you know to osteoporotic levels and in your bones you've always got building and breaking down going on so you're just trying to keep that building ahead of the breakdown right right so just try and catch it early jump into the gym early start eating better earlier yeah. That's the idea is there even a way to measure your metabolism. It doesn't seem as simple as like stubby on the scale to measure you know your weight or B._M._i.. It's impossible and like like is that something important that people should know well. There's a couple of different ways to do it but I think if someone needs to count calories if they just don't have an idea or there's a certain plan they WANNA fall. It's a certain calorie level. Yes you could approximate it with an equation. There's a couple you know scientifically valid equate equations like Mifflin Saint Joe or Iron Jones and they take your age your gender your height your body weight and then on top top of that. You're adding your physical activity. Those even have some variants and margins of error like fifteen percent <hes> but you could get it measured by like you said Andrew <hes> calories and food. That's burning it so so we call that a calorie meter chamber so indirect Calorie Mitri <hes> is one way to measure a metabolism or incentives barometer die said that right incentive speranza train. Oh Yeah so basically you you could do something but it's like breathing into a snorkel and it's not very or the I've read about. There's some like intense ones where you're like in a room for like a day or something and they're like pulling the I like not pulling the oxygen. That sounds terrible but it's it's. It's a very clinical medical thing but it's like it's not gonNA walk in and do a laboratory coach at cal State Long Beach because you were doing some plenty the of something and I even sat in one of those body composition egg chambers forgot the name of at this point sorry but <hes> you know the laboratory setting is really need but it's not practical hydrostatics wing in dunk tank. When's the last time I actually physically saw a dunk tank right now right and do you even need to be that precise with your again? Only if you're going to have a caloric value of what you're eating to match it with right so <hes> if you've been gaining weight or you want to prevent weight gain than burn more calories and eat less right and if for some reason someone is like wow I just can't keep up my you know I keep losing weight or you know I still am so thin then. It's like your need to on more of what you eat counting. Them is just labeling it. I mean it doesn't right. It's always one of those two factors either. You're not burning enough or you're not or you're not you're eating too much or it's the opposite doc yeah. Are there certain foods that can help with this with with speeding up your metabolism in the short term. There are some that can affect your your energy burn for the day. They're not going to hit hit or make a dent in that that long term the bulk of your resting metabolic rate that's part of kind of who you are <hes> but we know that <hes> like Green Tea <hes> hot chili peppers some things like eggs is our beings ginger cold ice cold water the kind of like the digestion of the salary when we talked about <hes> warming up the water to room temperature costs you know is a as a clerk cost. You take energy to do that so if you cold water your body needs to. Hey I gotta heat this up. He's energy to do it yeah right so drink. A couple leaders cold water with ice cream. It's like oh it's so it sure does what about what about green tea ice train to get deficient metabolism. You also have to have an adequate amount of the B. Vitamins because those are actually within the reactions that that process. Is the food and turn it into energy for your for your muscle cells and so forth so you're you're B vitamins like firemen and Riboflavin and <hes> paradox scene which is B.. Six so the multi I think that <hes> candice asked me about off air and and getting good sources of your B. Vitamins to keep that metabolism converging happening. I gotta say Riboflavin is one of my favorite words of all. I always loved that word. I don't really know what it

"Monday's going great we got some air conditioning someone I know doesn't that's me I your how to drive to work next week you know just pick me up on the reading our crews friend heather is here registered dietitian at Aurora hi heather good afternoon this is fantastic we're talkin impossible burger meat free options when it comes to Burger these upon very popular right these are plant based meats and they're pretty popular right now you're going to see them in quite a few fast food places restaurants some grocery stores to for a variety of reasons some of its health reasons Frasier lower cholesterol you know eating a lot of red meat like BFF that's not grass fed can increase your risk for heart disease and cancer potentially environmental concerns by people to write so lots of reasons why people might try these things so you brought in a couple options press one was from cute by took a bite of baton member was very Yummy the burger one though I was a little like what's in this what's in the burger so there's two main companies that make these plant based meets I don't know what to call in because I felt technically need yeah but they're made their created to have the taste and texture of meats anyway one is called impossible foods so that one is made out of mostly soy protein and then there's coconut oil and another oil in there is that the one of the key someone you guys tried it and crumble form so you can find that at all cute of us right now okay to give that a try I brought it in a breed of all but you can also get it in burger form at some restaurants they are not offered in grocery stores yet on the other one is that beyond to meets so it's a burger they have the crumbles also and then they have a bratwurst and they also have like a hot Italian sausage and their protein is a little different it's made from people teen mostly better they're really the bomb was sick no I like the crumbles better yeah has the texture is like meat okay yeah you could probably sell it on a grill too but I mean I just in a pan I didn't like the texture of that will really different yeah and the flavor is very well I mean the burger doesn't have a strong flavor but it's kinda say if it's kinda like I feel like if you put ketchup or mustard or you put clock on here it would taste like anything else almost okay great looking at maybe I maybe I didn't tell you I haven't tried the birth should it sitting right here usually a little taste yeah on the crumbles in the readable from you know what I thought was a little spicy for me they do add to it and onions and some kind of seasoning though that's probably why I like the spice I liked it better the second day so that was doable but in my opinion if I were gonna eat there again I for my protein I would just get the beans from there to me that satisfying enough it would be nice if people could take a little samples of these because you don't sometimes when you go to a place you may want to try it but you don't want your whole meal to be okay if you've never tried it before so maybe go to the grocery store and maybe they have in the freezer spectrum there before you go out and I don't know what yeah yeah so again the only the beyond to meet one is going to be as a three star impossible foods burgers and and stories that you have to get that at a restaurant or something and then the other thing I would say to keep in mind if it's like the burgers that they're serving in restaurants I mean the burgers themselves are only two hundred fifty calories they sell the decent amount of fat and saturated fat because of the oils that are in there they're still close to four hundred milligrams of sodium in them and then they're sticking out on something so if it's a burger you've maybe have a big bond there so just remember that part or forgetting fries and stuff like that like human or the giant soda I guess my point is the calories my happy way last you're going to have way less cholesterol maybe but everything else the numbers are still gonna be kinda high you know it's one of those things that maybe you taste it once you kind of get used to it I just joined weight watchers some lake well ma'am I try it yeah you know point the doctor if you want to eat something a little bit more later on you right and for me I think it would be more the environmental impact which is why some of these were created to because a lot of resources both water and food is used in cattle right so and so that now we can eat them so it is still shows rises very good very good so the other option is you have to give up red meat completely right but maybe have at last top ten you could have these things here and there bring and being I am always in favor of kind of more whole foods right so I have mixed feelings on these products as they are little more process it's a good alternative registered dietitian heather clued you still happy we got shot in so little right really the food "Today's episode is brought to you by Oregon. You know, when something goes wrong at home, and you just freak out, I have definitely had my moments especially when it comes to pests ants in the mirror. Nara, cockroaches hanging out around your bubble bath and uninvited rat, a your daughter's birthday party. Don't let pests ruin the moment, get an organ tech out to your house tomorrow. That's P, O, D, five zero Orkan home is where the bugs aren't. Welcome to brain stuff production of iheartradio. Hey, brain stuff. Lauren Vogel, bam here if you feel like you can't even consider consuming a candy bar without being confronted with its chlorine content. You're right. The same thing goes for just about every piece of packaged food you see in stores, plus every bottled canned or carton beverage a nutrition facts label depicts detailed info on the amounts of fat sugar. Sodium and more found inside. But while your favorite breakfast, cereals sodas and sandwich fixings are subject. This type of in-your-face transparency, you may have noticed that booze is typically off the hook residing behind fact labels. So what gives the answer lies in the powers that be while the food and Drug administration or FDA regulates the safety of you guessed it food, including non alcoholic beverages? It doesn't govern the alcohol industry that honor belongs to the alcohol and tobacco tax and trade bureau or TB an agency that doesn't require labeling while beer wine and spirits companies aren't league. Alie mandated to print, the nutritional info on their products. Consumer advocates have been calling for the TB to change that. And it has sort of in twenty thirteen the agency made nutrition labels optional for alcohol, but somehow, experts don't feel the move was bold enough Johns Hopkins public health researcher Sarah Blake told vox in two thousand fifteen many adults take in a tremendous amount of calories from alcohol, and they have no idea. She should know her work revealed that the average American regularly consumes four hundred calories a day from alcohol alone. A pint of PA contains about two hundred fifty calories a glass of red wine has about one hundred twenty five and a shot of liquor has about one hundred. The reasons behind the disparity in label requirements between the FDA and t t b goes back to prohibition when the ban on the production and distribution of alcohol in America came to an end congress passed the alcohol administration act of nineteen thirty five which eventually led to the establishment of the t b but its rules around labeling have historically been a bit. Messy substances. The people might be sensitive to, like, sulfites have to be labelled, but other ingredients, do not wines, contain fourteen percent, alcohol, or more have to display alcohol content while wines from seven to fourteen percent. Don't have to list, alcohol content, if they're considered light or table. Oh and wines with less than seven percent alcohol. Those aren't regulated by the TB at all. Those are under the jurisdiction of the FDA, and so they're required to display nutrition facts. Labels confusing. Isn't it? A few brands corona light, Guinness Heineken, and course, light do put calories and some nutrition information though. Not the ingredients on their bottles, or packaging, but it's typically very small print or hard to find you might even have to look on the bottom of the six pack to find it who looks their Bud Light on the other hand began voluntarily including obvious, leibels listing its beers calories fat carbohydrates and protein per serving, as well as other ingredients in February of two thousand nineteen since then and Heiser Bush's added similar labeling to some of its other Bud Light line beers, including Bud Light lime, Bud Light orange, and Bud Light lemon tea change is brewing though. At least in the beer industry industry leaders, including Anheuser Busch Miller Coors, Heineken USA constellation brand beer, division, North American breweries and craft brew lions which together produce more than eighty one percent of the volume of beer, sold in the United States have agreed to voluntarily displayed nutrition facts by twenty twenty. "Yeah. Scientists say that fast food could cause dementia and the damage. They say is irreversible Dun, Dun, Dun, Dun, Dun. This is from the sun in the UK experts say that unhealthy eating habits and lack of exercise, puts people at risk of significant decline in brain function, a team at Australian National University found people are consuming an extra six hundred fifty calories every day, compared with what we were eating fifty years ago, that's equivalent of a burger fries and a soft drink. But they say that they've proven a clear link between eating more and brain deterioration, professor nNcholas cheer Byan, who led the research published in frontiers in neuro into chronology says we found strong evidence that people's unhealthy eating habits and lack of exercise for sustained periods of time puts them at serious risk of developing type two diabetes and significant declines in brain functions such as dementia and brain shrinkage. He also found that brain health can decline much earlier in life than previously thought, however, he says this in large part to a society that promotes unhealthy lifestyle choices he says the damage. John is pretty much irreversible wants a person reaches midlife. So we urge everyone to eat healthy and get in shape as early as possible preferably in childhood, but certainly by early adulthood, says many people who have dementia and other signs of cognitive dysfunction, including shrinking brains have increased their risk throughout life by eating too much bad food and not exercising enough. Because democratic voters were saying good. She needs to stay away. I don't think that's a surprise to a whole lot of people. This may be a surprise. If you order dessert, I it'll help you lose weight. That's new study. If you've heard of this before I have not no. I've seen it. I didn't realize it was this effective for people. They let people order dessert first before they eat a meal. And seventy percent of people that did that over the course of four days. Consumed fewer calories when they did it. Is that because you weren't I guess the reward had already been done. So then once the food is getting out there once your actual meal is coming out to you. Thinking, well, I've already had the rich thing. Maybe I should just go with the salad. It's this is what they say they consumed an average of two hundred fifty calories compared to when they headed after the meal. Because it's just the psychology part. Everyone knows dessert is a very healthy. And when we indulge at the beginning, we compensate by ordering less. Just less. Okay. But then you're not getting the right nutrients. Right. I guess, but if you're just not if you're more cognizant of what you're eating. That's my point is that you know, you already had the thing that's really rich. Now, you're going to pick something that's healthier. And you're also kind of full already. Because you know, whenever the waiter comes by at the restaurant the waiter never asks you. And I found the list, and I really think that like the majority of them were accomplished, which is great good. You wanna share any of intimate details? No. Because I'm actually not a big believer in sharing goals. I'm not fishes too. I keep mine to myself until the years old. Yeah. Me too. Those are really the only people that read it because I haven't your and yours are embarrassing. Grow. Mermaid hair mine did not have anything about my hair on the list or really appearance in general. It's mostly just you know, so career when you're already ten you don't have to like game higher. You know? Focus focus on it. All right healthy. Okay. So I was in the airport, and I have been get well, this is from December. Because I've since tried to quit I coke and my New Year's resolution. So in December. I was traveling. I think it was traveling to see you guys. But anyway, I'm in their Portland, and it's very quiet because that's like real fancy in there. And everyone's just like on air pause, or like, you know, like, Glenn drinks and free one man, I had to fart and I. I thought that I was going to be able to it was going to be one of those ones where you can like lift your, but she. And then like, you're like. Ooh, hoo. Far too gross. You know, and just like rises. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So I add my ear pods in on. I didn't have them on danger already. So I just went for it. And I lifted out. All like. This is you have to lift it. But then you also have the lift the, but she. Yeah, we're not in touch for. I had the liking on it together. Anyway, I was so embarrassed because. Plays here. Pretend all watching something. So gross to lift it up like. I know. Media keep the, but she goes down. So then it kind of gets wrapped in the know too, much noise because those pleasure seats. Oh, yeah. It's like the faux leather the plug expanded. Anyway, my good week Kelly is really turning into be a brilliant child. Good. So whenever I give Kelly a big treat like a not her regular food. She doesn't eat it. She takes it outside. And she buries it. She's like a real street. Does she go back to get it later? Well, I don't know. Like, I don't know what she did in the same place. He's burying them all over like, I see her digging and bury it and then like, and then it's gone. So then to answer your question Becca this week, I witnessed her go out on the patio looking around chasing a bird and then start digging in the succulent pot. A potted plant digging into getting big, and then she pulls out her treat brings it inside. Sits on her dog bed and eats it. No, she's so smart. You learned it's she learned how to ration street on the street. She knows she knows food comes and goes, I'm like, I'm I you're so safe. I'm always going to feed you could she likes saved her treat for later amend. Brought it back into the house and eight later when she was hungry got his all this got her. We'd is she was like a year when I got her to switch enough. She's so fucking smart Kelly. You're brilliant. I wish you weren't such an asshole to other dogs. Okay. On that note when we come back smart ladies are here. We'll just one. We're not you guys know how when there's an assortment of cupcakes. "To taste delicious. You've been tempor-, veggies or bad. Yeah. Well, you could pull what I do. Sometimes I know it's really weird, but you pull I pull the breading off of them. Veggies. Yeah. You get those delicious like slices of Harry, a Boccia. I encourage this. Okay. But you know, what that just means? It's deep fried. And a lot of the rolls are made with mayo and cream cheese so roles because they're loaded with rice, and they usually have ill sauce, which is loaded in sugar. That's just not the best way to go. If you're a fish lover. And you think that you like raw fish, and you're adventurous there are better ways to go. So you could order sashimi. But the thing about this. She me while I love it. And I encourage it, and I always order it in some capacity chances are they're going to give you an order with a lot of pieces. So if you want variety, and you're not with a group, you're committing. They're spending a lot of money or eating many pieces of that same fish. And also if you order just an order of sushi me without rice, it's wishes basically like you're cut sushi without rice sometimes it's cut a little thicker. Yeah. Used to think it was the same thing I figured sushi with the rice on the bottom. And then so she me like if you just take the rice off. Sushi isn't at the exact same thing as Ashim me. Sometimes it's not. So honestly, so what I tend to do because I like the way they cut the regular Negeri. That's like fish on rice. I will order sushi. I say to my chef who I have a really great shorthand in a nice relationship with light rice, give me less rice. And so he puts my sushi on tiny little beds of rice. And if I go somewhere new, I will often just have some of the rice little of the rice and a little rice goes along way. You can just kinda know job some of the bottom of that rice. Exactly. And if you're with a a male, right, Mike, they might eat the whole pile of rice, you leave in the corner of your sushi board, which is I love it. It's been a little bit of soya sauce. It's great. Yeah. Or you'll sauce sweet though. Oh, you know, what else though, if if you like the style of sushi me at the place, they cut it. Well, sometimes there's a sampler so you can get different kinds, and you don't have to commit to a giant plate of tuna sashimi true. Very very true. But if you have friends that like the. Issue me. It's good to share especially the specialty ones have like a low tale of opinion and tuna with like shaved artichokes, something fun. Like that depends on where you go getting. No, I'm so angry. But also the thing most sushi restaurants have meat so soup, which is so low in calories show delicious like thirty five to fifty calories an order, which is just a nice little Cup. So that's a good starter. Also, pseudomonas salad. It's just sliced.

"So if you normally consume let's say twenty five hundred calories a day, if you cut down to two thousand then you're looking at about one way that sounds okay. That's you make it sound simple. It can't be that. Simple. Is it that simple? You know, the nutritional science hasn't changed all that much in the last hundred years it's really comes down to calories then versus calories out. And of course, Tiffany levels help with that too. So if you're burning an extra two hundred calories through. You know, exercise and that helps that extra five hundred calories that you're trying to cut out. I want to continue to eat as much as I do. And then fight it on the other end with the exercise. Do you care as a dietitian if I do it that way? So what's more effective for weight loss diet or exercise? It's a great question. I get it all the time. And as a dietitian somebody who studies weight. My answer is absolutely diet. It is so much easier to control the calories in than it is to control the calories out. So for example, let's say the difference between a large French fry in a small French fry is about transferred and fifty calories. Okay. So just cutting back on portion is gonna cut you out three hundred fifty calories. How hard would I keep going finish that thought? So then you know, how how does that equate to exercise while you'd have to run a five k basically? Are you kidding me? I've got to run a five k to burn off three hundred fifty calories. Yes. So what's easier for me? I don't know. It's it's cutting back on portions. Well, that's a game changer. We can't just said because I just think well, I can just burn it off. I'll go down in the gym. I'll get on the treadmill for twenty minutes. It doesn't really I mean. Sure if you wanna do that. But I mean for me it's easier just to the treadmill has to be seventeen because that's because the amount of I don't wanna five K day. Okay. I have a question or comment to the numbers. "So you could either get the lightest dressing. They have and get it on the side and then dip don't poor DDP. So you're basically, you're sticking your salad. You're sticking your fork into the salad and then getting your serving of your salad on your foregin doing a little dip in the dressing. Instead of just pouring all the dressing all over your salad. So it's basically letting your salad dip it's TOA in the dressing and nocco. I one exactly exactly not that. You're not giving your salad a shower of dressing. It's about the toe dipping. I love that. So eloquently put. Douse my blue cheese. Like, so good. It's even worse. If it like if it comes dressed because again, you don't realize you think. Oh, okay. Even if it's one hundred and fifty calories for an average serving of salad dressing but easily a quarter Cup six tablespoons. That's nothing. And that's. And it makes me so sad. Because like, I'm the person. That's like oh dressing on the side. And then I'll casually say it again. And then right when the waiters about to leave him like, oh, I'm sorry. Did I mention dressing? Those can't remember and then still it still comes on. And I do send it back because you kind of have to. But you have to be really nice about it always like super nice. If you're nice and you tip. Well, it's okay. They can always say, no. You know what I mean? But there's nothing wrong with telling them what you'd like. It's true. Okay. We'll get more into that later as well. Okay. Well, in fact, we're gonna get into it a little bit now because another mistake that you're making is not asking questions. See I do think people like to play dumb when they go to a restaurant. They are seeing something on the menu. They see that it says it's chicken, they don't bother saying the chicken fried is at grilled. How is the fish prepared is in blackened, which quite often means it's made with a lot of oil. And or is it grilled or do you have? You know, fruit on the menu. Or is there for something that you serve that you might people to give me even if it's not on the menu is the soup that you're looking at it. Is it creamy soup? Does it call the bisque, or is it breath based a lot of people just say, oh, it's Barroga soup. I'm getting it. And then it's a big bowl of cream, and that's a bad idea. Yeah. So ask those questions, Jamie. You've tip about that. Right. I do. So what I'll usually do is. I'll scan the menu before they even come comes take our drink order, and that way if I have questions, I can ask them then. And that way when they go way to take the drink order. I can think about okay, so asparagus soup is out. Let me look again. Oh starter salad at like gives me time to make my decisions. Because if I asked right when they're taking the order, I might be like, then you're all frazzled. I ask questions as being seeded literally lectu will be seated me I'm like what's the super today? Seriously. But that is a good tip because it gives you time and you need time. Okay. And the fifth mistake that you might be making is being fooled by buzzwords. So we look at the menu, and we see things like free range chicken or organic something organic or there's a word that you know, as healthy like shrimp. But then you don't see that. It's linguini with butter sauce. That's coming with the shrimp. So it's like just thinking that whatever buzzword you see is going to make your dish healthy..

The diet wars have been raging for years each side has ardent proponents. Those who insist that a low fat diet is the best way to control weight and those. Those who are convinced that a low carb diet is better have had a hard time finding common ground for far too long. The nutrition arena has been dominated by such preconceived ideas, large scale surveys. Don't always provide the details. We need to understand how nutrition works at a metabolic level, the carbohydrate insulin hypothesis was recently tested in a rigorous trial conducted by our guest, we're talking with Dr David Ludwig. He is co director of the new balance foundation obesity prevention center at Boston children's hospital. He's also a professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and a professor of nutrition at Harvard Chan school of public health. Dr Ludwig has written three books for the public ending the food fight always hungry, and the cookbook always delicious that led wig. We understand. You have some exciting future research in mind. Can you tell us a bit? About it. Sure. Well, our most recent study, which we called f s to framingham. State. Interstate study looked at what happens when you keep bodyweight the same. What happens to metabolism? And we saw that metabolism. Speeds up by about two hundred to two hundred fifty calories a day on a lower carbohydrate diet twenty percent carbohydrate. But the next question to ask is what happens when you lock calories on these different diets what happens to body, bodyweight and most importantly body fat. And that's the purpose of our next study. And in fact, we're taking to the next level of rigor in our last study, we prepared foods for people and observed meals being consumed, but they were free living and some degree of noncompliance is inevitable. So to look at changes in body weight or body fat. We've got it. Make sure that everyone is eating. Exactly the same number of calories. This is the ultimate test of whether all calories are like and so to do this. We're presently recruiting honored and twenty five people who will I lose on average about fifteen percent of their weight on a low calorie low carbohydrate diet, we'll stabilize them and then stabilized their weight and then at that new lower weight, they'll take up residency at a beautiful lakefront retreat center in the woods. Very isolated long away from any long way away from fast food chips crackers soda as we'll be able to maintain twenty four seven oversight of our participants. Giving them every Neil that they're observing every meal that they're consuming closely monitoring their metabolism and then doing eva-britt studies of their body composition in. In other relevant biological outcomes. So that studies ongoing we welcome anybody in the greater New England area to apply it's called the F B four study, and you can find us at Boston children's hospital. So this study is really our next up. But we also need other. Studies by independent groups to ask these questions into fit ways that let read the last time we talked to you. You had just published always hungry, and that book has a number of stories in it about people who have come to you for help, which you mind sharing a couple of stories about how people approach weight loss, and what seems to work, and what doesn't seem to work. Right. So we're undergoing so we're making a transition from science which is meticulously controlled two, anecdotes and. Any import? Yes, they really show us. And there's a long history of case stories case studies and medicine, but it's important to note that anecdotes are just individual experiences, and they don't necessarily apply to everybody. But with that said, I'm happy to to summarize some common stories that we've heard both in the pilot project leading up to our book. But also in our Facebook group, we have a free and noncommercial Facebook group called the official always hungry book community. We welcome your listeners to join and very frequently. We hear that when people give up processed carbohydrates phase one of our three face program

Oh, and one other food source that doesn't show up on today's protein focused food, blogs other people archaeologists in western Europe have evidence that the precursors to modern humans eight their neighbors during the paleo ethic era. So just how many calories are in thi- or an ear. Archaeologist James Cole of the university of Brighton in England decided to find out Bing of the diagrams of cattle and pigs that illustrate. Different cuts of meat Cole mapped out the human body, then determined caloric count within each segment showing how much energy they would transfer. If consumed the results were published in the journal scientific reports a thi-, for instance, contains a hefty thirteen thousand three hundred fifty calories while the spleen is a modest one hundred and thirty overall the average human body has anywhere from one hundred twenty five thousand to one hundred and forty four thousand consumable calories. Some parts may take longer to digest you'll rack up ten thousand two hundred eighty calories from humans going alone. Here will provide you with two thousand seven hundred calories and the bones contain about twenty five thousand bone. Broth is so untrendy right now after all despite all this talk of ancient eating habits coal concluded that other humans were probably not a nutritive meal of choice compared to competing. Available food sources one single willy mammoth, for example, containing a whopping three point six million calories would have given an entire tribe food for about eight weeks a human on the other hand would have provided enough calories for tribe to subside for only half a day, leaving everyone to wonder what's for dinner after just a few hours. Cole concludes that because of the relatively meagre calorie counts of the human body people. Eight other people for social or cultural reasons not for their health.
