Afghan Journalists’ Battle: To Keep Free Expression Alive

Many afghan reporters fled amid threats but others stayed boldly continuing to do their jobs over twenty years of an american in western presence that enabled a vibrant media landscape in afghanistan the taliban and other islamists often targeted journalists in suicide attacks and bombings yet today. The taliban have officially declared the media free and independent to work unlike when they last ruled afghanistan from nineteen ninety six to two thousand and one still afghan journalists are reeling from beatings detentions and ever tighter taliban restrictions on what can be reported that raise questions about the future of free expression in afghanistan. Plastic Surgery for Prisoners Goes Back to the 1950s

"Science historian sharona pearl is interested in faces. She's researched physiognomy. Which is the study of facial features in their relationship to character. She's written about face transplants. She teaches at drexel university in philadelphia and she was working on a new book about face recognition. She was tracking down stories of people trying to avoid law enforcement taking drastic steps to change their appearance. Everything from people trying to dodge modern face recognition software to a famous british train robber ronnie biggs who got plastic surgery in order to evade the authorities after his massive train. Theft as she got deeper into this kind of research looking for more examples of people changing their faces using search terms like criminals and plastic surgery. She stumbled upon something else entirely. This whole other world turns up what she found. Blew her mind. All of these studies written from the nineteen fifties throws late as the one thousand nine hundred eighty s about programs in prison that gave people plastic surgery as a mechanism to lower rates of recidivism. How To Create a Stronger Mindset to Tackle Goals

"I definitely get into mindset itself and talking about stoicism the type of resilient thinking where the obstacle is the way instead of wishing for life without obstacles instead of wishing for short cut around the obstacles cherishing obstacle in knowing that is how we find our strength. That is how we get stronger. That's how we get better just like going to the gym. This is the jim for your brain. It's called alice. Static load in the body and the more resilient we are. The bigger are stress bucket. Were alice static. Load can be the more stress we can handle and the more stress we can handle mentally the more stress we can handle physically like pathogens and viruses and things like that and vice versa when we get better at physical stress doing cold plunges and hot saunas and doing fasting we get better at dealing with mental stress. So your body sees both The same those are alice static. Load another thing. That i would say there's really important is. If you're big. Goals are overwhelming. Start making small goals start raking them down into much simpler things start tracking things. Journaling things using an app. If you want using google key or evernote or something like that in just tracking things and tracking your small wins with your small goals. That's really important at the big old just seemed too big and break it down. Start making it simple. If your goal is for example to lose fifty. Which i don't think is a good good goal. I think a good goal is to fit into a certain dress or you know. Feel great about your body. Or whatever like i think a shift like. That's more important than getting caught up in a number but to i think breaking it down into smaller things you know like what's the dress size you want to get into for you know x weeks like those kinds of things like and or lifting a certain amount of weight by x. weeks You know being able to walk two miles by x. Weeks you start getting like your goals broken down to where instead of like one massive goal you have twenty smaller. Owl's and then. How good does that feel when he start checking off all these goals like wow. I can walk two miles. I'm in a smaller address. I'm you know able to skip mcdonald able to you know. Skip the diet soda. And have a joe pacheco. I don't know you know something like that. those are all meany wins but big wins that add

Where Did Body Mass Index Originate?

"Today. We're looking at whether it really is that bad for your health to be fat and a quick note about our words in this episode. A lot of people don't like the words overweight or obese. Some people prefer the term fat as a neutral way to describe a person's body like tall but not everyone is comfortable with using fat this way and meanwhile overweight and obese have specific definitions medicine. So we're going to end up using all these terms but we'll try to be careful about when and why we use them okay so in order to talk about this at all we've got to with the bmi the body mass index every stat. You've never heard about how many americans are overweight comes from this measure. Hundreds of thousands of studies rely on it. It's a staple of modern medicine. So where on earth did it come from to find out. We're going to go back to the nineteen fifties do the university of minnesota's football stadium. The golden gophers are battling it out in the big ten conference. Our story starts down in the depths of the stadium entered through gate twenty seven. Just as if you had a ticket gate twenty so and then there's a maze of of hallways and offices along under the sloping of the The bleachers above this is henry blackburn. He's taking us to the lab where the bmi was born. He's a professor emeritus and minnesota so When when we worked there on a saturday could hear a distant rumble. When the minnesota eighteen got a touchdown run out and run up the causeway and see if we could see the extra point kick sometimes invaded by berman. Because of all those who left the stands and the carter but it was our place. Were very much at home. There and one thing they were doing and as weird lab was trying to answer this big question. How much fat do we have in our bodies. This was important because scientists figured it was the first step and understanding whether fat is bad for us

Well let me start by saying in my beloved state of florida. I'd be happy to get five thousand and these are hard working people and let me tell you something hugh we know in florida about people who flee persecution they were called cubans. They came here and built an extraordinary community in south florida. The community that cuban-americans help build this state in the sixty seventies eighties today or a vibrant part of it. I expect nothing less from the afghans. And let me tell you. It's not just what are afghans light. It's what are these afghan. Like in. So there i would say to you. Hey how much. Courage in true grit and determination. Does it take to put your two year old on your back. Grab your four year olds. Hand picture yourself in this situation. Fight your way through those crowds. "This week's guest on the show is a woman named deirdre keane. She was just featured on humans of new york and the running community was so excited. We were like a runner on humans of new york and her next big goal is that world marathon challenge any advice for her she signed. She's doing it like she has signed up. she's good. She's doing it next year if she's listening to this any advice for her well for me. It's like anything else before you can make a commitment like that. You have to earn the right to do it than what you can't do it on a buyer room that it's it's gonna come back to bite you so you have to do the work and i knew i could do the work. I been there before in terms of running that many miles consecutively day to day to day to day when i was wanted to fifty miles every single day for almost eighty consecutive days. So what's the big deal running twenty six miles for seven days in a row but the big deal is the fact attorney seven continents and so for me. It was more about not as much the training. 'cause that was a given but it was about the rat race in between and it was about sleep deprivation. It was about nutrition while flying was about recovery at thirty five thousand feet no sitting in a seat for twelve hours you know and then get often go run another marathon so trying to figure that all out it was about the weather. Temperatures in climates that we were in antarctica and it was whatever ten degrees and then back plane six hours later. You're in south. Africa running at eighty five degrees and your body's calling. Yeah not a lot of time to acclimate gave. You gotta figure that all out in advance. i mean i think anyone who serious about it does the training. I mean the running. I don't mean to be little it. It wasn't easy. I'm not saying disease but it was probably the less challenge in part of the overall experience for me was the running. When i was running. I was like thank god. I'm running like dumb. Does fly in done with this craziness. get employed. We get my luggage and all that stuff on buses and everything. I'm out here in the moment. 18 Months Into the Pandemic and the USA Is Still Looking Grim

"Are the numbers on kovic. Eighteen months in about one hundred and fifty thousand. New cases are still being reported every single day in the us and more than six hundred sixty six thousand people in this country have died from cova. That's one in every five hundred of us joining us now to give us the latest is. Npr health correspondent rob stein. Robert situation sounds and seems pretty grim. Walk us through police if you could where things stand with the pandemic in the us. Yeah you know. The numbers are still staggering. About one hundred fifty thousand people are still catching the virus every day for the ninety six thousand or so sick. They're in the hospital and more than eighteen. Hundred people are still dying every day from covert nineteen. That's still not nearly as bad as things got during the darkest days of last winter. But it's still pretty awful and no one thought the pandemic would still be taking this kind of toll you know especially so many months after we all thought that vaccines would be like the calvary. Righty to our rescue. I talked about this with dr. She's the deed of the brown school of public health infection. Numbers across the country are really stunningly. Bad i mean hundred and fifty hundred sixty thousand americans getting infected every single day. It's really stunning. That this is where we are as a country and you know just tragic since the incredibly effective vaccines made so much of this totally preventable even in the face of the delta varian. So where is this headed. I mean are things just going to go from bad to worse it again. Yes that's what everyone is wondering right. You know every parent in america's holding their breath hoping their kids are going to stay in school every workers wondering what's going to happen with their jobs and you know there is a glimmer of hope actually looks like the surge may have hit a peak and could be finally starting to subside at least for

"There seems to be like a hard ceiling to how many people will care enough about like a new toast. Crunch are lucky charms to interact with the post But the monster cereals seem to have this huge cult of personality Especially fruit and yummy. Mummy amongst the sort of nostalgia hollick's over on twitter and so many people are glad to see them back with monster mash cereal. Which is you know. We've hyped up several times ever since news of it first came out. But this is a fiftieth anniversary reunion of all the monster cereals because a count chocula franken berry debuted in one thousand nine hundred. Seventy one boob area appeared on the scene a year later. Fruit brute howled on shelves in nineteen seventy four with yummy mummy wrapping up the monster serio crew in one thousand nine hundred. Eighty eight Beckon twenty thirteen actually general mills did bring back for bruton yummy mummy in their own independent serial form. That was a huge year But now they're coming back again this time all in one cereal that is the proverbial monster mash cereal itself And i'm looking at a box of it in front of me right now and i know we talked about the box last time. But it is truly stunning. I mean the sent me even just the image is beautiful beautiful. This is a war. This is a work of art. Yeah this is. We're talking to your bed next to you. At night it's worth nail into your wall and framing is worth taking to your grave into your your monster mash mausoleum. Even the caveat here is that this isn't the five and one perfect cereal mash up that it might sound like rather each of the five monster cereals contributes something different here in the cereal itself. We've got crunchy ghost pieces from franken berry and blueberry we've got swirled ghost and bat marbles from the count and then orange and yellow monster head margaret's from route and yummy mummy respectively. Okay so what this means is that you know besides being an aesthetically pleasing cereal it kind of just tastes like blueberry real okay Just because blueberry already was like this vague amalgamation of generic indecipherable fruit notes. And just by mashing franken berry in there. You're not really adding a whole lot of distinction and the markets obviously aren't really individually flavored. Like anything to begin with See you know. I can forgive them for not putting chocolate flavor in there which might have been a little bit weird. But i'll admit it would've been nice to get some actual citrusy lemon orange or perhaps even sharing notes to represent You know our fallen monsters free per in yummy mummy. But ultimately you know. I don't know if i can really hold a grudge against them. Just like you know. People have been wanting to bring the monster cereals. Back to their oat flour recipe for a long time myself included But at a certain point he just needed to embrace the monster cereals for what they are which i think are like sort of these five horsemen of the coming halloween season on if you just take them at face value for for what. They are still a totally mindlessly multiple cereal. I feel like you know. Poor it poured in a goblet or chalice. Eating out of something very thematically appropriate. Toss them edible. Cereal glitter in there and give it a little bit of extra color put on some old goosebumps episodes and have yourself a merry halloween time here in august. I guess or ghost if you will so it's not it's about what you'd expect you'd say it's not like it's it it tastes like you missed cereals together. It's like when you go to a restaurant or a gas station or something. And you mix all the sodas together and it just doesn't like oh this is sweet. This is really sweet. You're really buying it for the spectacle of it. And honestly i think it's a worthy spectacle the gimmick here was supposed to be that the the monsters would also released their own cover of the monster mash and doing original song but The the qr code on the back of the box. Just takes you to monster mash. Cereal dot com. Which at least at the time of this recording still only says you know coming soon or whatever so maybe just hasn't launched yet. Yeah a little bit of extra mastering or or remixing it. They had to do this. This hot tune that will blow us away too so you can't really detect the chocolate at all. Because i was the only one that i was wondering how it if it blended you know. It's like i try eating the margaret's individually to try and see but it's hard to tell whether that's just like me projecting what i want the marble taste like versus what they actually do which is just like sugar or whatever so eating an actual bullet by the spoonful. You're not gonna get any chocolate out of it. Well that a worth worth. Now here's a here's the actual question if this is hard to get. Is it worth tracking now bowl of it or is it just sort of like you know. Make a matt remember it in your head like imagine it. Visualize it at the moment is a bit hard to find. Apparently people live in mostly getting it from sort of more regional grocery chains. Like your your jewels or your acne or your derisive piggly-wiggly of the world But actually got a box of this sent to me by kindly sent to me. By matt of dinosaur dracula who really got early hookup of this stuff by finding it his area so I've heard that it will be coming to a much wider roll out to general supermarkets in the coming months. So i wouldn't i wouldn't sweat about trying to find it now. I think you're not really losing anything unless you're kind of person who needs to really kick start their halloween spirit months in advance. I think would be a good a good cereal to buy right on the coast of october. To really put you over the edge into the great orange black carnival. We call the halloween season. I did also the get the chance to try monster mash fruit snacks..

"In overall concept. Please bring back. Thank you for your podcast. First off great job of being sued everybody. Those wonderful Dan d you have one of these is sort of like sticks out to you Yeah well first of all it was really enthralled. Haley's answer. Because i had never heard of kashi mighty bites either but i looked them up and i cannot believe that they literally have these little dude pieces through like actual crunchy stick figures and know that as a kid i would have you know. Set them up in a diorama to play with the digital toys. Or whatever else. I had michael classic serials. Also a kashi cereal and that would be kashi honey sunshine which was around for a while and kinda just quietly disappeared but it was these little golden honey squares that just had incomparable. Like melt in your mouth. Nece that i really really enjoyed and nobody else seems to feel that way. Did you have one of these cold cereals. Atta a lot actually One was The the the two that stood out to me The i was ken. My rice bran the ever. Have this one. The probably not it was in came out in the ninety s. Very early nineties. I remember going to reach sleepover at josh jobs. You know josh joe. I went to school. As a reduction of south and it was a crispy brown rice flakes was the idea. Sort of like a hardier special k would be like the best sort of like With maybe a bit more malted flavor to it Really good yeah. It was a very good cereal. That i very much enjoyed. The other. one was fingers fingers as your fingers right now. It's such a while it was a serial with pieces that are like big and you were not supposed to eat them in like a bowl with milk you would open them up like thing of chips and eat them like they were more like cracker size. But you're designed to. They came in little pouches and yours designed to eat them with. Your hands goes way ahead of tons compared to jumbo's taxi. I mean it's the exact same. It's the exact same Exact same premise. I mean but just like. We didn't need anybody to tell us that we get the with our right right like it just reeks of the marketing meeting. So he's like people are eating these days with their hands. We should just give them from using milk at the same time. You wanna hear. How long this i. I pulled up. We never do this. But i did want to share. I was trying to reminisce. So i pulled up an ad for fingers. I can't play the thirty second spot. Real quick lease me. Want wholesome new serial made with your fingers. Wholesome am i read my hands.

"Golden brown like they've been broiled a little bit harder or you know whatever food. Science magic goes into caramelized something. I am not an expert on that front but yeah it's got that golden magic in my opinion. Yeah i thought it was very good Sarah my wife liked it. a lot. She actually she really wanted a bowl of cap'n crunch a couple of days back. So i sat with two bowls and picked out a bowl of regular captain crunch for her. Which meant i got to enjoy. Both these knockoff. Coca poboy boy which is You know i'm not. Complaining is good but Yeah i i think this is a this is also a fantastic Jamir fist in the box Grab a handful. I mean slam dunk. You're getting a lot of different texture. That chocolate flavor is great compliment to the to the cabinet crunch just like a big dry handful absolute winner. Yeah it's worth the sticky poems i would say. Yeah what did you think of the chair as though you know i. They didn't bother me that much. I do feel like we're getting to a point with euros where it does mean something and like especially with the food like this or there's a cultural history to it The way that that that term has just sort of been adopted for like anything vaguely like cylindrical and star-shaped in extrusion like i think is is starting to lose of its meaning. I thought it was okay. I really. But i'm i'm with you in what you said in their view. I'm tired of the bags bags are not. i mean. This isn't a great shape for syria off. So that about some distance chosen. And i would say this if this was a serial you you pour into a ball but i also i really don't like the bags it feels so wasteful and silly and i don't know i'm a big i'm a big Do not like those. You can get more out of a single sort of bear pod handful of cereal. Then you cannot have a single pouch here Yeah and these ones especially like you were saying. There's no cinnamon to it. So i don't really l. why they're calling them cheerios. If there's nothing to that effect there if they're going to keep using this shape which is very hard to eat in the first place because it stabs you in the roof of the mouth a lot. I think we need to give it a better name like Chocolate pool noodles. perhaps chuckled. Me would be a great name for cereal. Cocoa puffs oatmeal dan. We don't talk a lot about oatmeal on this show. I'm not going to say it's taboo but it's it doesn't come up a lot. How did this unfair. So i think it's pretty good actually. So general mills is putting out four different cereal flavored oatmeal. 's which is interesting because oatmeal is also syria so cold cereal flavored hot cereals and those are tricks oatmeal. Lucky charms oatmeal cinnamon toast crunch oatmeal as well as cocoa puffs oatmeal. Which is the only one. I've been able to try thus far but it was also the one. I'm most interested in just because you know chocolate. Everything appeals to me and These meals are very interesting that they each take a two pack approach. So you've got your oatmeal in one packet you make it like you would any oatmeal and then you add the crunchy topping on top of it and in the case of cocoa puffs The crunchy topping didn't really add very much. They looked like carville crunchies but they didn't have any of their Intoxicating fudgy kookiness. So they're more just like I don't know they're just like these little shreds of crisp cereal almost. But it's the actual meal itself. That i think does well here because it doesn't actually taste that much cocoa puff cereal which is okay to me because cocoa puffs are kind of one of the more boring chocolate cereals just very corny in their corn. Puffiness so. I'm glad that this oatmeal tastes a lot more. Just like a bowl of edible hot chocolate or hot cocoa it's got that and really cozy comfy feeling and. I almost feel like these were missed. Time does a release in the summertime. Because i want to save a pouch of this eat beside the fire. Come winter. I think that bodes well for sort of the other oatmeal this line as well. I know lucky. Charms and cinnamon toast. Crunch meals had been released in canada. Previously and i tried them. They were very good. So i i wouldn't necessarily be opposed to more Cold cereal flavored hot cereals in the future and more hot cereal flavored cold cereals. Because that would just be code for oat flour Come on at farmer. Come back while waiting on your new free pop tarts. Is this the mango and some of the other ones. I i got all of them but the mango so far okay so this would be peach. Cobbler pop tarts banana cream pie pop tarts as well as lemon cream pie pop tarts. So he's more like pie. Pop tarts actual free pop tarts got. I feel like each of these are very straightforward in terms of whether i'd recommend them or not just because when you hear the name of these niche flavors it's probably already going to tell you whether you like them or not like if you're a fan of peach flavored things banana flavored things or lemon flavored. Things nothing i say will probably be a better barometer than your own personal preferences That said I think these were also pretty hit or miss. The peach cobbler pop tarts especially came across as way to like cobbling. You over the head with fake penis feels like it tastes a lot like those peach. Gummy rings and i feel that doesn't really gel as well with having this flaky crust around it. I think the same goes for the lemon cream pie in that. It didn't take its inspiration quite far enough on the literal fruit level. And you end up getting this unfortunate. Lemon pledging innis with less of the sweet juicy. Nece that i really enjoyed out of pink lemonade. Pop tarts which i believe were recently discontinued yet again to make room for lemon cream pie. Pop tarts on shelves The only one of these three that. I think might be worth the tries. The banana cream pie. Because it's almost got this weird continuum of chew going to where the flavor almost morphs the more you. You sorta saver in your mouth so when you first tasted it really hits you with that artificial candied laffy taffy banana but the more i sort of pondered it and You know let my taste buds. Do the talking the more. I got this overripe banana bread. You know sort of brown banana out of it. And i think that's you know it's really really niche in its appeal because people who love banana flavored things are already probably a minority So unless you. Are you know going bananas for banana. Flavored things this one is especially tough to justify because it's the only flavor that's exclusive to walmart sixteen count boxes and if we learned anything from the mystery pop tarts fiasco buying into over a dozen pop tarts in. This economy is Really hard to recommend yeah Let's see what else we got here. oh i a few that i a couple that i had From general mills Space jam and josiah see wa- cereals so Taking these in order space jam is a purple berry type deal with purple spheres. And we've got some orange basketball are bits and some white Bugs markets and. It is a picture of lebron james and are the things that i needed to tell you about space jam. A new legacy. The serial it. I mean dan. I don't know what to tell you. But i mean it is. It is absolutely remarkable in every single. Way i don't know why they made it. it is just the the i. It's not even notable member how sesame street was notable for the lack of berry flavor. this is not even that it is just sort of this tastes. Exactly how i thought it would Ferry a little better though dude. You're cereal which if you don't know juicy wa. She is a singer who i think originated from like the dance moms franchise but as martin like nickelodeon superstar As from my kids are obsessed with her. I think she's pretty cool. She has some good music. She sounds Unlike any other human being on the face of the earth I like jesse wa. And she's got a cereal called a strawberry bop. Which is.

"Whenever there are storms clouding the sky. Sometimes it can be overwhelming into feel like one is by clouds. But it's important to remember that if you were to fly upwards through the darkness through the clouds and lightning storms the top you would find a sunny shiny smiling sun with two giant scoops of raisins because that kind of is what the sun looks like. Hello and welcome to the empty bowl. A meditative podcast about serial. My name is justin mcelroy. And i am a serial enthusiast and my name is dan gilbert and i am whatever the opposite of a serial plumber would be because i love me a good news leak. And that it is a great way of describing. What's been happening in the serial world. We're gonna get to all that we've got news. We've got reviews. We've got beloved serial character Cereals and So much more A lot of great stuff so what is required of you. Well friend. it's easy you sit or stand or walk. Whatever you're doing your physical form is irrelevant but we would ask that you the next half just kind of try to think about serial Maybe you're going to sleep in which case we bitch you could night. We hope you're going to have a pleasant dream. We'll try to keep things quiet for you. i know that i. I love using podcasts ago. Sleep so it's an honor the you would welcome as in your endear Ear holes like that. We'll try to keep it on ice and call for you slip off to to dreamland But first we are going to get into some cereal news. These these healthy bars. Damn they just don't know Were the limits. Are they keyboarding to encroach. Yeah i guess after so. Many cereals have been given cereal bars. The bars are kind of bouncing back. Because recently we've seen a lot of bars turned into cereals. There's been kind bar cereal. There's been lara bar. Cereal and now entering the fray is cliff bar cereals. You like cliff bars at all you know. I think there's a time in place for cliff bars Especially if it's on a lot of chocolate peanut butter. I get down that sometimes. It's a nice nice filling sack whenever i used to cover trade shows When my video game days acer rely a lot on cliff parts to keep me on. Yeah i like how. They're these big sticky amalgam honks of assorted matter. They got a nice mouth feel to them. They were one of the first on the scene in terms of this generation of snack bars or protein bars. Or we're gonna call him and it's interesting that they're Among the last to beginning the serial treatment. Well i mean. It doesn't really seem like something to me. The cliff crowd wouldn't necessarily be into because it's kinda hard to sneak a bowl of cereal and milk onto an open rock face. But the who am i to complain when there are four flavors of cliff bar cereals hitting stores soon. This line is debuting in chocolate and peanut butter blueberry and almond butter apple cinnamon and peanut butter as well. As honey and peanut butter each of these serials will include coated flakes and oat clusters with a different nut butter as well as sweet extras Depending on which flavor you buy like the apple cinnamon peanut butter. Of course has apple pieces while the blueberry and almond butter has blueberries as well. i am a little bit sad. They didn't choose some of the more iconic cliff bar. Flavors i love me a good white chocolate macadamia nut or oatmeal raisin walnut. Sure but as it seems to go with. These bars turned cereals. I kind of have doubts. That they'll ever expand beyond this line Just because for one four different flavors seems like a lot introduce a serial line and at the same time much like kind and lara bar cereals pricing these pretty highest while at seven dollars box. I think this'll be the case. Where unless cliff is kind enough to send us samples. I'll probably just be picking one. That sounds the best out of all of them to try. So we'll see how that goes It's always exciting to see a new face and the breakfast. I'll yeah Speaking while no sooner. Are we talking about the cereal encouragement in bars. Then golden gram steps up to the plate with a bar of their own On the flip side we have this new cereal bar hitting shelves. It is the third entry. In general mills is series of soft baked cereal bars and this follows both lucky. Charms and cinnamon toast crunch soft baked bars. And it is golden grams. Soft baked s'mores bars. I say look good. I mean it's probably enhanced size wise because these bars always kind disappoint with the portions but Looks good with concha. Blondie yeah these things. Chocolates have historically been very delicious just because they really toe the line between a cereal bar which is typically like. Just you know a rectangle of actual cereal pieces gob together with some sort of sweet a goo- but these are more like A rookie yeah. You're right like a brownie or cookie. Very crumbly soft And borderline desert like so s'mores and graham flavored things in general If you've ever heard us talk about them on this show we are big fans. So i don't really see how you can go wrong with these golden grams. Soft baked smarts bars. The monster crossover event coming. This year is just expanding in scope You have to imagine that. The the film rights the I was about to say the scenario. But i guess that can't be far behind. Yeah so probably. The biggest cereal news story of the year. So far has been monster mash cereal. This was this is a celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the general mills monster cereals and it is sort of a reunion of all five of the monsters than being count chocula franken berry boo berry fruit brute yummy mummy. All in one box Very beautiful box as we have stated before featuring all of them in this sort of supergroup rock band and You know as usually the case with monster serial season known to some as autumn The cereal is not arriving alone but it will be flanked by an additional sweet accessory product as well so in past years we've gotten count chocula treats or franken berry and blueberry fruit roll ups but for twenty twenty one Continuing the theme of everybody is here with spooky berry. Monster mash fruit snacks. Which are spooky berry. Just feels like someone's son darts at a law. The just grabbing an adjective from a book to describe the fact that this is really the most assorted mix of artificial and debatably..

"I love love that. This is like i got an idea. It's a it's a cat's based serial. No wait it's a serious about one character in no wait. It's a serial four cats and they got like the full galaxy braid by the actually. I've jj dire. Gabe enjoy flipped the entire thing on its head. Now there's cereal for cats about. That's what the boardrooms at heb. Some like when they're making new series they just let people embrace their while dreams and see where it lands So we you know. We talked about getting sent links When when and is in the news and john oliver Got got on cereals case for lacking innovation and I none of research probably went into the ps. But dan. I would like to hear your thoughts on it. You know. it's like obviously. He went into this for the very negative attitude. He has not listen to our podcast Just because i don't see how you can look at some of the cereals that came out in the past few years in say that. They're not pushing the innovative envelope at all. Like like within the time that you and i've been doing this. There's been chicken and waffles within the confines of this program. Yes our patch kids cereal. Come korean green onion checks. It's just been very out there with the rush to see what can happen next. I know it's not cereal but like everything bagel pop tart. Seems pretty up there. Also so i'm not really sure what his standards are for innovation in the serial game but there was one story that caught my eye that didn't seem to fit into our normal new segment that i thought was a really interesting example of cereal innovation. That is occurring right now and that is have you seen the kellogg's cereal vending machine that's lily rosemary about it. So it's kind of along the same lines as a coke coca cola freestyle machine in that. This is a a smart robotic cereal vending machine that is capable of creating you a custom bowl using twenty two different ingredient options including milk or yogurt as a base It's developed by a company called chow. Medics who also made something called a bowl bought. That did the same thing for salad mixing and you know naturally the evolution from a salad robot to a serial robot just shows how close to humanizing machines. We are getting But this is hot. Also off of the cold. Cereal heels of kellogg's new mashup of frosted flakes and apple. Jacks which I should have noted earlier as well. They're holding a A fan voting poll. For what the next kellogg's mashup will be. But unfortunately everything in that involves frosted flakes and something else so. I'm a bit more excited. I get a real sense from the mashup thing that they're like. We have to move a lot of frosted flakes. We've made too many and we don't know what to do about it kit shack on the line. We've got a lot of frosted flakes get rid of but the contents of the serial. Vending machines seem way more innovative to me because They listed a couple of the possible. Pre mixed bowls that you can order. There's one called last night. That mixes frosted flakes fruit loops in crave with chocolate drops. Banana chips espressos syrup. There's also hawaii five. O that blends frosted mini wheats and bare naked. Triple berry granola with coconut mango and pineapple. And like i don't know my own customs. Serial robot seems like a very good example of cereal innovation to me No kidding yeah. But unfortunately for now. They're only testing the rollout of this serial vending machine at florida state university and the university of wisconsin madison. Which is honestly kind of genius if you wanna get some You know good use data on how this thing goes because no one's gonna use it like college students are. What pizza hut did that with. When they rolled out their delivery program they started. They started by sending up outside college. Campuses after wonder though too if this was specifically designed for college students to keep them from going to the dining halls and filling up tupperware's in backpacks from those big circuit breaker handled cereal dispensers. Because that's how i spent my college years john oliver. I hope you're listening. There's a lot happening here. john join us. Thank you so much for listening to this program A prompt for this week. Or anything you want to ask people. I've got an idea. Yeah if there were to be an empty bowl cereal. What would you imagine that tasting like based on your experience listening to this show. "Any other happenings in the world So it's kind of been slow going for actual retail store new serials but We have seen that for this fourth. July cap'n crunch is red white and blue crunch will be returning. This is something that appears just about every summer but this time the cabin is mixing it up a little bit because instead of just getting red white and blue colored crunch berries fears. We're getting a box of all crunch berry. Stars sounds delicious in crunch berry. Stars have appeared in christmas crunch before but they were only a small part of the overall mix. So i'm honestly a little bit worried about what sort of Rough of mouth havoc these crunch berry stars might have because you eat crunch berries already and you know the sheer goodness of them inspires you. Eat really quickly. Insertive a rope roughs up your palate a little bit and having these little cow. Trump's in the box now seems like a recipe for disaster at a backyard barbecue. Yeah the one thing. Kevin credited not need was like more texture more textural. Yeah i mean you even look at the cabins face on this box and i mean historically the cabin often does pretty funny faces with stink is an awkward smiles but in this one he really looks like he just got a five pointed crunch berry stuck in his throat. Somewhere so definitely. Don't forget to drink the milk with this one. Yeah and if only soothing balm to secure yourself One of the things we liked to do on the empty bowl is try new serials. And tell you if they're good or i won't even say back because even the worst serials pretty good. You know less than good you really. You could start transitioning into this version. Appropriately a yeah Lucky charms appointment on this one as painful dan. This wasn't hurt leader read. I couldn't even finish it. I've got incense burning a cup of tea and like a cat on my lap for this one to try and keep this discussion meditative because marshmallow. Clusters has to be a top disappointment from the past few years of cereal. I'll admit i'm not privy to the actual internal process of cereal development but having this serial which yes. You've been hired on as a consultant. Exactly exactly they'd probably too afraid that. I'll point out the clear gaps in their oat flour infusion process But the problem with this one was we. We've talked about it a few times now that two years ago it was first rumored that a lucky charms crispy rice clusters. Cereal was coming out and extensively. Seemed like this was going to fill a really big heart. Wrenching void left behind by rice. Krispies treats cereal which changed its recipe much so for the worst And from what we could see again of a very grainy image of lucky charms crispy rice clusters it had that same really good gobbled up toasted rice with a sugary binding element going on but somewhere over the course of the past two years the actual consistency and content of what is now called lucky. Charms marshmallow clusters changed dramatically. And now in addition to you know lucky charms. Marv you have these little squarish pieces made of like amalgamated grain dots Squared circles if you will and they just taste like nothing like there have been plenty of bland cereals over the years but this one takes the totally unfrosted cake really not not even more so than like the pieces of like frozen and and those that flock cereals the ones at least have sort of this density to them. They're very very light and airy. I will say that they're weirdly extremely crunchy. If that's what you're into but the flavor is just not buried kicks like rice or are they rice rice and corn mixed. So i can't really tell the exact blend but there's something very audible about the way they crunch but then you have marshmallows as well and ordinarily marshmallows exists to provide a fun pop of you know normal creamy sweetness to a more interesting cereal. Based but here it's like spreading marshmallow fluff on top of white bread It just adds nothing to. And i don't know i was really disappointed with this one so i. I wrote a bit of a scathing review that is far more negative in tone than we will permit on this podcast. But i'm already getting pretty fun. Narrative progression going on in the comments below. That post people will be like well. I can't trust your word for it. I'm going to spite by anyway. And then somebody else will apply and be like listen. That's what i said too but trust me. Do not do this. Maybe it's not all bad that something like low key. Charms didn't change anything about the cereal because lucky charms has not had a great track record lately with trying to fix what's not broken. So maybe stick to fancy margaret's for now Can we hope for better from team. Cheerios cheerios. i find that it's hard to actually go wrong because again i'm an old flower stand at heart and having this serial that's basically all about celebrating the potential of makes me really love most nutrients that come out So that was our original tagline for this show celebrating the potential votes. Exactly like the at the bureau did not give their sponsorship like we really hoped but these team cheerios. So we introduced these a news story last week and i kind of aronie asleep. Said they would just be a frosted berry flavor but they really did put in the effort to make this a cheerios mashup serial killer original team cheerios of the late ninety s. So what team sherry of does is combined. Strawberry blueberry and frosted cheerios for an end result. That is pretty. Alright right i think you see with cheerios. Allot where you're either going to get sort of a plainer more sensible cheerios variety. Or you'll get like the flavor blasted cheerios. That really hit you over the head with the indulgence factor and team. Cheerios leans closer to the former. Which if you go in expecting more of a subtle sweetness. You're probably going to enjoy them. There's a really good job of strawberry and blueberry just because those individual cheerios flavors. Were already really good. I thought this might be a little bit like very buried cheerios. But it doesn't have that same raspberry element that those did and for me. At least i'm not the biggest raspberry fan. Because i don't like how the sharp raspberry flavored tends to override everything else. So i was really happy with these team. Cheerios because he reminded me a bit of kellogg's fruity snacks which are probably the undisputed king fruits next right now especially since the old scooby doo switcheroo those for me and you know team. Cheerios isn't going to win. Any world records so to speak to talk to the team But i think they're still worth a try. If you like the constituent parts it probably could have done without the frosted. Cheerios is because they don't really contribute a lot but not bad overall especially compared to the marshmallow cluster. Lucky charms that. I had before him. It was nice to actually benefit of following this.

Kevin last week Trump two years ago late ninety s. christmas first cheerios five pointed crunch July One past two years one margaret Cheerios few charms fourth

"You know bugs. Bunny's team faces off against shack. Tony the tiger who also gave basketball cereal this year. This true. yeah still haven't gotten my my The lines on the balls like with that wheaties dunkel Cereal but i can hold out hope Now dan we have gotten General mills wash surreal onslaught of new cereals. That are i. Guess making their wasted shelves now as we speak and I loved to talk with a little bit about him. Yeah where do you think we should start. I mean let's start with the best one. In my opinion i'm not a serial revere myself but This first one really knocked me flat on my but are you referring to do. Delay toast crunch. Indeed i am dan. I'm and i feel like kind of partying paths here. Because i saw on social media you enthusiasm for this but i'm not sure i get it necessarily really see i. I thought it was such a smart. We got a lot of steel a term. I heard used in a in a video about cologne colognes that are like adjacent to the original. One right you know immediately go like i. I can't think of good example off the top of my head he'd get like boss bottled and then they're like boss bottle intense flankers and i liked it. I liked that term for cereal. Because i think it communicates. So we're talking about these. These are flankers right and of the cereal toast crunch flankers. I would say that this is a really smart subtle way of introducing a sort of creamy caramel flavor Into one of the best serial bases if not the as of all time. I really thought it really had a a lot of guests. Body term is And i really dug it. Lost me at subtle. 'cause like to me this is almost overly punchy with what they do like. It's like they took cinnamon toast crunch which is already a very intense flavor and then they layered on top of it even more this. Serve a golden karma. Four taste and some interesting butterscotch keenest at the end as well but i almost found it to be like a sensory overload at a certain point of scented candle based on like you know golden cinnamon fields or dripping. Carmel madness. I don't name. Candles was his not a colonial candle. Podcasts we need to stick to especially the air or get our line but this might be a divisive cereal. It might be along the same lines as crave where you're either going to do it. A door it or you know. Think it's a little bit too much but in my opinion if we're talking flankers toast crunch. Nothing's going to beat peanut butter toast crunch. Maybe i'm just bitter that we didn't get that instead This is the first time we've ever disagreed about anything on the entirety of the show dance. I think that's the track record. All things considered. What did you make. now. Aren't suzy azam for this. Cheerios oat crunch line is pretty legendary. What what would you think it. Cheerios almond oat crunch. I mean it's almost unfair to call this a leading serial of the year candidate because everyone kind of knew that it was going to be good. Everyone being you know anyone who's had cheerios crunch variety before. But it's like if you took the the gameboy advance s. p. and waved it around. Assume novel breakthrough. When the gameboy advance was already amazing because this is essentially the honey and oats variety of cheerios out crunch Sort of up created a little bit because even though honey's not in the ingredients list my tongue still thought that it tasted it But i think the the main profile that i was getting from this is how well. Honey nut cheerios itself. That's probably where the line sort of blurring because the not in honey nut. Cheerios is almond extract. And this cheerios almond really amps up. That almond extract factor. So it's really you know. Brooding golden brown nuttiness that. I think pop doesn't do too much different from other cheerios out. Crunches but the actual almond slivers is nice and there really is a big for me. The thing i dig about the crunch line is that it really adds a body to cheerios. Which i think in itself is good. I mean it's a hardy cereal but when you had that you really feel like you're you're starting to get into like you know that granola level like crunchiness and almonds really take that another set for with like really nice body to to cereal. Yeah you've got something. Like the shacks frosted flakes that we talked about before where they're mixing flakes and fears. And it's kind of this unnatural textual combination but here when you've got owes you've got loose oats and you've got almond slivers. I think that is a pretty brilliant textural menagerie especially when you add milk and all sorts of it all starts sort of gop together now dan. I don't wanna buy issue with his last one. Because i i will be interested to say i like. This might be a divisive one as well. What did you think of apple cinnamon checks. Yeah it's it's probably divisive. Just because i thought it was just fine. I mean maybe a little bit weird. Almost it's got a sort of similar intense. Candlish sent to it and bolder than i thought that that was like. I thought i'd be going in for more like apple. Cinnamon cheerios kind of apple. And you're actually getting effort for in my taste. I'll say i ate could charitably described as a omit full entire paul hot. This is me cramming my head before we recorded but Almost like a jolly rancher kind of apple like a surprisingly tart. I think for what it is about of green apple. Yeah it's very apple forward. I would say. I had a little bit more trouble detecting the cinnamon in it and i think the choice of rice checks instead of corn checks. Held it back a little bit because Rice checks is so sort of flavourless own. That it becomes just an empty vehicle for this pretty potent powdered coating to reach your palate So it's kind of a glass cannon at that because there's a first burst of you know sort of apple flavor but it fades pretty quickly and it really leaves no trace behind so personally. I don't see myself ever choosing this apple cinnamon cheerios. Because i like how that one infuses the flavor a lot more deeply not to mention having that hardy out base so i mean there's a person for every cereal out there so i won't say don't try was impressive. They went for it. I i feel like they really went for the apples. Anything i agree with you. Two of the three base Checks rice's my least favorite I think we would have been a weird combo with his But i i was a little sad that it wasn't corn. Maybe maybe try something that hasn't been done. I mean an apple peanut butter and apple. Caramel checks really would've caught my attention. But maybe next time now. I have not tried strawberry krispies treats and we have to trust your your judgment on these. These came out. As a surprises well very krispies returns shelves and twenty eighteen. And you know they were just all right rice krispies much like rice. Checks are just so light and airy that adding flavor rarely gives it significant depth but as with adding butter marshmallows. To just about anything. These treats are a whole lot better. I think the strawberry flavor here compared to strawberry krispies cereal is sharper juicier and more like a fruit snack honestly and i really like that about them. And these are releasing now in full-sized rice crispy treats in eight count boxes or as part of this just absolute unit of sixty four count variety pack. That's themed after neopolitan. Ice cream and it pairs strawberry rice crispy treats with original rice crispy treats as well as chocolate rice crispy treats and that sort of ready pack gives you many treats and i think i actually prefer it that way because it's way easier to eat them in one bite or you know to stack them. Three high unhindered jaw and sort of rebel in this jury. Ice cream which. I totally did and totally recommend if you're the type of person who can get through a sixty.

"I grew up in england. But my my dad's from ireland. One of my favorite things about being irish. The i have a possible with harp ponant. And i think that a hot would be a great coach ma. Bit addition has lucky. Charms has very little to do with ireland's may be connection to that a bit more. Thanks so much. Hi dan justin philip cereal enthusiasts when it comes to lucky charms mar bids the question. I've always pondered his his. Why stop at just a leprechaun wanna lean into the full irish mythology maybe get a banshee or a hookah which is a a shape shifting. Dirk monster kind of goblin creature that maybe. The market changes shapes every time at dunks under the milk. Thank you damon just in. My name is ainsley. My pronouns are she. They may ideas for an additional lucky charms. Marshmallow shape include a bright red speckled marshmallow to round out the relatively pastel color scheme of all of the other shapes or a puffy white cloud or sheep all of which remind me of the rolling hills of ireland where the leprechaun likely resides love. The podcast and hope you're well where the leprechaun likely resides. Evidence is out but the leverett gone anywhere. That's where you can find them. It's interesting that so many people who answered decided to go the route of making lucky charms more true to their presumed irish heritage. So i think that's really interesting so now dan. I love this you have put in here a talking about our specific were favorite. utensils be it spins or Plates that we use for for cereal bowls not plates. That would be absolutely wild Do you have a favorite a favorite combo spoon bowl. The you lie to us. Yeah i thought this would be a good question. Just since since we're at episode fifty we can talk about the very nature of the bowl itself. And i think it's kind of a two part answer. Because i have these vessels that offer to use when doing actual serial reviews and they are in fact not really bulls kind of a hybrid between a cup and a bull. These sort of short almost goblet like things Their pink sort of coral pink and they sort of balloon upwards so that when you look at them from the side it looks like a cup share but when you're taking down photography cereal it looks just like a sort of sterling perfectly concave bowl and i really like to use these when reviewing cereals. Because they don't hold a lot up but they still sort of give the appearance of volume that way. I can no matter how good or bad cereal is. I don't feel like i'm wasting cereal. Milk by just pouring a bowl because it could be the worst serial in the world. And then i only have to get rid of this. The small sort of cup slash bowl full but when it comes to actual cereal bowls. I really like this one. That i have that says seriously on it i think it was a gift from general mills back in the day And it just makes me feel really official. When i'm doing my blogger. The duties on or off the clock And in terms of spoons. I kind of like longer spoons. I think i like sort. That delicate balancing act between hand and spoon and the the counterpoint. To that is that. I've also recently gotten to using tablespoons cereal. I think this was during one of my carville. Crunchies benders and this is something that i recommend you do. Only in the comfort and peace and quiet of solitude in your own home but using a tablespoon really increases the sort of slurp factor that you can do and it really changes the ratio of milk. Cereal that you can get any given spoonful. Because they're so deep. So i don't know it remarkably consistent but i have my quirks Yeah i have my brother travis. Got me A series of cereal bowls with my face on the bottom inspirational san sayings Love to use my daughter's usually use those their dirty frequently. So my go-to usually. I'm not super proud of those might go to is My wife is soup fanatic and she has a lot of I mean giant mugs. Now the the reference point here you know what i mean like basically. They're terrains with handles. I mean there. They're giant mugs That i with the handle importantly so slippage is less of an issue If you like me like to ritual istiklal eat your bowls of cereal on your couch with your phone playing a video to really a plus the experience and that is my favorite as far as spins I just like something to be somewhat hefty. i don't like very small spoon to get like as big of a you know by as i can without feeling like serving spin like that data deep but just like right down the middle kind of sperry. I totally dig the giant mug approach because it like halfway through you can already start to drink thing. Yeah oh it's perfect for that. "About carville crunchies. And i'd be mon the lack of a carville in my area Judging from his run night here it looks like you got your hands on a box. Okay i did get my hands on a box. And this is a wild carnival of inexperienced essentially because carville crunchy. Cereal is a chaotic version of cereal. As we know it. I got sent a box. Car themselves chaotic. Get worse cereals. I had to contact carville directly outright. Because i think there's one carville in the entire state of michigan but it is truly quite literally in entire over one pound bag that they sent me of fudge. Drenched cookie crumbles the same fudge drenched. Cookie crumbles the ice cream franchise uses on its famous cakes and it really felt like they just grabbed it out of industrial supply warehouse in crammed into a bag. Like there aren't even nutrition facts on it but they have the actual nutritional facts box but they just substituted all the line items fun facts about their carville history so this. Did you get the cereal or did you get balk order of ice cream topping or is there not a difference between the two. That's the sort of weird and kind of disappointing truth here. Because when i posted my review of the stuff i learned from some people who because the promo was that the first one hundred fifty people to visit their local carbel location any given day for a three day period. Earlier this month. We're supposed to get this crunchy cereal. But i found out after the fact that people who actually one of those one hundred fifty people contacted me and they only got a box that was about the fourth of the size of what i got so it was like a four ounce box of crunchies and so i immediately felt bad sort of flaunting the sack of ill-gotten riches that i got like my my brown gold doubloon hoisting above everybody. But the more. I think about it in the more time goes on to say that i am not to be envied forgetting this. Because having access to such an absurd quantity of carville crunchies has brought nothing but karnal and cheer hedonism into my otherwise stable. Life they're good they don't taste like cereal they tastes like but i bet it's a mix in they are beyond compare absolutely. I've been scattering these things in every cereal in my pantry many of which do not call for them like they would be wild for the call. Try it with ice cream on the special k that that worked pretty well. It was good with those putting him on some oatmeal. That was good. But then i got down to like the fruity pebbles in my pantry. And the crispy cinnamon basketballs and. I didn't even know what i was doing. And before you know it. I was eating a whole bowl of crunchies. Like it was my own private brew of iowa. Oscar justice orienting. I must imagine. How do these feel where i saw. How do they hold up against milk. They sink right to the bottom of course and they also sort of swell up when they absorb it as well grape nuts effect. Yeah so when. I actually eight a bowl of them with milk. It was like almost like an always sunny in philadelphia joke where i'm not eating an ice cream cake. But i'm eating the ingredients of an ice cream cake at once and just insanely intense and you know a four boxes more than enough for any fully grown human. You know i'm betting Warmed up to be pretty good. like in. Sort of coco wheats were hot grape nuts. Inter-lining yeah i'm not sure. What the proper chemistry behind. That would be put. This seems like more. You know. I see like when you see the boxes of more bits. Her bags marquette's sold in bulk. Like you know i. I tend to cement farmers margaret a lot of or vat. Vat nineteen a saint. My daughter loves Those kind of yucky out. Because it's like. Wow that's just Whatever glycerin and sugar and this feels like having a stash these for like spicing up lackluster cereals. be a worthwhile purchase. No i think they would definitely go a long way selling these in stores and it is it is it kinda plays off what you and i have been talking about a lot of our thing cereal. What carville seems to do here. Say like we'll put them in a box. And you tell us this. Change their their structure their classification if we put a box around them yeah i would say that yes. This is a serial while you're eating it but afterwards the repercussions beyond anything. Normal zero could cause. Physically or psychologically. Well i guess. I'm gon na half to take control and move onto ghostbusters cereal section. I was so thrilled to hear that. You've got these and i actually broke down and bought a box off of ebay which which is usually a trigger for my local walmart or target to start stocking them regularly after i bought them at a premium Try to little a little handful. What did you what did you think. You're you're the expert here. What did you think i mean. Honestly thought they were pretty ghastly. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing in terms of brand recognition. But it's like they took the ghost element of the name way to literally because it's haunted by just. It's very very faint fake strawberry flavor. That's like a crunchier franken berry with a worst flavor if that's even possible yeah franken berry. A close is a did. That's a parallel. Yeah for sure. What were you thinking. same yeah. I was trying to place the flavor because like every this is sad but every time i have a berry flavor of serio. I wonder if it'll taste like my beloved smurfs berry crunch. Which i'm now so distant from that. I no longer say for sure. I'm not sure i'd recognize it in the wild the closest i've found is like wild berry fruit loops. I think is like the best berry flavored cereal and this is a a pale imitation of that. I have to say more than just the flavor which is like you know. I wasn't expecting huge things. But also the pieces the mar- beds like you have a perfect template. Where with with the state of marshmallow man like the that would be a great shape or like the red. You know if you look at the old What was it They had a Gerster syria like back in the day. Right where the the pieces. The pieces were the anti sign. Yeah right like please. Please give me that like please give me some sort of crazy there but like spheres and blobs. I mean it's it couldn't be Less impressive yeah. i mean. we haven't seen the movie yet. Obviously but unless the primary antagonist ends up being misshapen blue blob. What this is kinda pointing reminded me a bit of the mandalorian cereal. Also in terms of a hollow fruitfulness and that almost feels appropriate given how with this movie. They've kind of given stay puff marshmallow man the baby. Yoda minions treatment with the sort of many. Stay puffs so yeah. This one was kind of a big disappointment for me. Yeah i i was quite quite quite disappointed did not did not love it I don't know. I'll i didn't i didn't try. And that's probably the the real test of of a serial. So maybe i'll i'll give a world but did not did not love it. The flavor immediately So it's kind of a about her. You know it's interesting though. You talk about smurfs berry crunch so often and first of all and fifty episodes i have to wonder how many times smirked berry crunch has been referenced But i feel a very similar way in terms of looking for a serial that recreates nostalgic taste about neo. Pets island very crunch cereal Which is something that. I remember fondly for my younger days and now i have to wonder whether murphy crunch and neo pets island very crunch might have been the same serial. I wonder about that too. Because i briefly also had Tried the believe was the troll cereal in which were like these rainbow crunch. That was very good And it made me wonder if maybe that was of the same lineage of the genetic makeup somewhere in these serial factories are keeping like an industrial vat full of this perfect ferdie serial chemical that they're only sampling. Maybe once every ten years so We asked our listeners. about speaking markets What their ideal new lucky charms marshmallow would be by the way. I got a box of glycemic. Lucky charms view. It's lucky charm. Perfect the the markets are incredible feat of engineering but still So we asked you about your ideal. New lucky charms margaret and here is what you said you asking for law bit. Would we add to lucky. Charms and I grew up in england. But my my dad's from ireland. One of my favorite things about being irish..

He claims he was on cold medication. And apparently that can register. As I'M GONNA SEAN. Right out through the window of this Red Robin and Shaun's got a big smile on a you saw that he got a little friendly with the waitress in there. The manager of the step in. It's GONNA be alright. They're loading up in the van. We got a game coming up. Shawn's a lovely young man anywhere. This journey I have on the roster. Is this a relation to you? Is someone who called journals. Who plays for you? Who is what is his story. Is that house. He related to you during my brother. Dan is also our offensive lineman defensive tackle and Kohl's Kohl's just straight up the finest person I've ever met on planet Earth I mean I think you could drag me around every continent around the globe and I'm never gonNA. I'm never going to beat anyone who I determined to be as fine a young man as cold germs. He was convicted of manslaughter. Yes yeah manslaughter. Definition manslaughter is not murder and he also is a strength and conditioning coach at North Montana. College and he was pushing it with some players and there was an unfortunate accident. He did one of his players. Look Cole was trying to make a statement to his team and he went and he got he found by the side of the highway e shot a black bear with a track gun and brought it into his weight room and the thing was passed out and he said we all gotta be like bears. We gotta get out and the thing woke up and it did kill an elderly janitor at the college and he lost his job and once again. Here's what I don't get Dan Cole Surf for years in prison for manslaughter. Why don't we bring it up like if you've served your time? I don't go around saying. Hey Dan still the humidifier from target. Oh no now. Dan Actually paid the money for that. Emit fire now but still. He walked out of the store with it. Why do we bring this up? When they paid their debt. An interesting question from Tim Journey. I would say because usually do not find rosters that have quite this much scandal on them. Do you have anyone else there. Anyone else who as in someone who has a ridiculous story if I picked someone randomly here this Douglas Allen Pitcher. What's he play for you? What's his story? What can you tell me about him? That's a little bit cleaner than all these other guys that you're running around you're telling me. I'm the GOTCHA journalist but I'm looking at it and all I see scandal after scandal on your team's resume. That's why we're the counted outs. Apparently maybe don't understand that name after. Explain it to you. There's a lot of journalists out there like you who look at young men who paid their debt society at made a mistake when they were young. And you say I count them out. I don't I look at what they can be. And Doug Douglas. Alan pitcher are linebacker and fullback? He's a gentleman. He's a perfect example. This gentleman who has never been found guilty of anything in a court of law. He's been acquitted three times. Yes of murder one. That's a serious charge but he's been acquitted three times and the one time he did actually get into trouble. Guess what it's an Alford plea Dan and please where you don't take responsibility for what you did. And that's the only time it's ever been any action taken in a courtroom against him and yet there are a lot of people out there all over this. I don't know if you know these read it. They talk about this a lot and they call him the serial killer. Got Away You know as I said. He's been acquitted of several murders and took it out. Please no he's not a killer There's a podcast called the flea market killer out there and they say Douglas Allen pitchers the flea market killer. And I guess this podcast is popular and you know they say the Douglas Allen Pitcher killed anywhere between twenty five and thirty five people in Arkansas Nevada area in the early ought. Here's what I can tell you. I can stayed a blooming onion with Douglas. Douglas Our pitcher. You know what I just with this sound. Pigeon ideas laughed with Douglas Allen. Pitcher wages told stories to each other and then Douglas Alan Patriots said. He has to go to the bathroom and I gave them a little pat on the shoulder. Sat Love You dougie and you know. It's been an hour and a half. I've seen Douglas. We're out of your by the Red Robin Bony comes back again. I'm going to give them a hug. You know what I'm GONNA call him. I'M GONNA call brother and then for our next game. He's GonNa play fullback. He's going to block for jobs mcnutt is going to play linebacker and this guy can cover tight ends. Come out. He can cover running backs coming out in this guy's got wheels on him and he's got a dead stare that just let you know he's all about business and his hands are cold when they touch you in like people's strong hands that's Douglas and all he has a little Duffel bag and he's got his change of clothes and he's got you know some duct tape in case. He has to make repairs and a box cutter in case he wants to open up some gifts. Some people send an. That's Douglas. He simple and he works his tail off a heart warming lovable story Tim Churns. Please come back again. I don't have any more questions for you. This round. Congratulations on your success. I look forward to talking to you in the future. I can't believe that this is a team. That's allowed to do things during a pandemic but I salute you for being almost as elusive as Douglas. Alan Richard. That's uncalled for. Dan and I just WanNa say to everyone out there. You WanNa football game you WANNA get game going and I'm talking to high school college professional cfl any of these leagues. You give the candidates a call we will be there within two astro vans and decommission Fedex. "So. I kind of have enjoyed these interviews that we have done and I kind of haven't because they've gotten a little awkward with the eccentric former Southeast Tulsa strength and conditioning coach Tim Journeys If you haven't been following his journey it's an interesting one. It began doing an interview on our show about some questionable training techniques that he was doing during the pandemic eight nine one one calls. He ended up getting fired saying that. I took him out of context. And I was guilty of Gotcha Journalism. But he is asked to come back on the show because he is saying he's now got a success. Stories got a barnstorming football team. And they he says are seven and one fourteen players who had college and pro careers derailed by what he says is fake news and Gotcha journalism so tim journeys returns with us here on ESPN radio. Frankly I'm surprised you keep coming on with us because the last interview we had. You didn't seem very happy and you blamed me for the fact that you've been fired. Well then you know the first thing you WANNA do When you when you when something real special happens when you're live takes a nice turned toward the bright light. You WanNa call your haters and you're doubters and I was GONNA say rub their noses in it but I'm too classy for that so Yeah things are going real good with my football squad as your listers now as you know. We're called the count outs. And it's allowed players. Count it out By gotcha journalists like yourself by the sports media by football coaches trying to put on by trying to virtue signal and trying to put on a fancy show their boosters user talented young men and we're out here and guess what we're doing damn guests will were doing while you're barnstorming football team. Wait a one word answer. It said. Guess what we're doing damage. You're supposed to say what what? Tim Churns or winning winning baby. You're seven one allegedly. I don't understand how it is that you're allowed to barnstorm during a pandemic. How are you even finding opponent? Well right now just give you a little bit of setting right now. We are three hours east of Houston and this is a beautiful picture. I'm going to paint for you and I'll tell you right now. Dan. You're not looking. You're not creaming your neck up at the sixteen chapel here. This is actually real life. What's going on right now and it is happened. We are three hours east of Houston. It is ninety two degrees with eighty eight percent humidity. We are in We've just finished eating at a Red Robin I've got I've got fourteen players. There's me the coach first time I've ever coached team Dan. And we're seventy one and then we have our referee in our statistician So so we call eighty eight eight years old. He is a Korean War veteran. And we have just The players can seem through the window there finishing eaten right now and we've got a two thousand three. Gmc Safari Two thousand four Silverado With with pillows and pissed bottles in the cab. And we've got an old Fedex Steph van with our team logo on it and we are out here and we are winning. We'll let me celebrate some of your success then by letting you talk about some of your players. Because I can't imagine how the Hell you get people to play for you during a pandemic argue. Its love of football. It's love football. It's it's heart is what it is. It's a big old sloppy. La Looks like wait. I'm sorry is screwed up. Put Sedated Talian dish. That's filled with cottage cheese. The fettuccine Alfredo Shirt. What WHY WE'RE OUT OF HERE? You know what it is. Dan We love football and everyone of these guys. Smith findings young men. I've ever met in my life. They got something someone like. You know a whole lot about that. Got a big old sloppy covered in Marinara filled with ricotta cheese heart. And that's what we all got here and we're out here and we're getting done and I'll tell you what we're doing. We're driving into these towns and we're calling people out we're calling the people who are lazy and fat. The people don't care that don't have that art seven days ago we were in Tuscaloosa. We drove through the whole town calling out. Hey where are you at coach saving? Were you at players. We went by his house. We went by the office and then eventually we gave them a time for the game. We showed up the next day we got into. The stadium was not easy to get into the stadium and they didn't show up. That's a forfeit. That's W seventy one baby. Seventy one so hold on a second are all seven. Victories forfeits are all seven of them. Forfeits or just that one there are. I'll tell you what else victories are. They're all seven of them. Were wins and every one of them is a case where we showed up. We went to the sense. We went to the superdome. We went to drew brees house. We said let's get it on. Weei said one o'clock tomorrow we shall up. They don't show up. That's a win and we've got seven of. We've been everywhere. We've been crestview highschool about three hours. North Jacksonville what nationally ranked team. They wouldn't show up so we're just putting the call out where we're racking up ws baby. What happened with the laws? How'd you lose? I mean it was tough. That was tough day. That was How DO WE LOSE? Some of our offense land blocking schemes were off. I don't think a west coast style offense and Arauz worn is Chris is they could be and I believe me. I the team in ear full about that And we lost. That was a hard fought loss. We lost fifty six to thirty two. Yeah I've been basically what happened was we were. We were down in Shreveport. We went to the Margarita. Ville Casino looking for a good time turned out. It was closed down but in their parking lot. I get. I didn't know this. They were a lot of I don't know the politically correct term here for. What I'm about to describe is an honestly I don't know so I don't WanNa hear you calling me out with what I'm going to say. Are they bumps or Hobos? What do you call them either work? That's fine bums or hobos. That's fine the homeless homeless homeless. I guess I don't know what it is. Anyway there's a lot of homeless people in the bums in the parking lot and they sleep in there. I guess ten feet away so we pulled up looking. We're looking for the casino and a bunch of these guys. Stand up and ask what are we and we said. What are you and we got into a bit of shouting match with them telling hey get off your lazy asses get a job and these guys start saying hey you idiots there's a pandemic you guys are running around and your your cheap football pads look like. They're from Halloween costume and in these astro bands with house paint. You painted your logo on the side. We're like hey you shut up and said we'll play right now in a bunch of these gentlemen. I Guess Homeless Hobos. Would it be a column stood up and play right now and turned out? There is some players in this group. And you talk about hunger There was some hunger Golan and one of the gentlemen after the game ended up. This is where it gets a little sweet. One of the gentlemen ended up joining us By a gal by the name of Jimmy Bass John and turned out Jimmy Bass. John played some high school ball years back. And once again at one of those things a Gotcha journalists GonNa dig through his record Video attack his coach and bit a hole in his cheek because he thought his coach was Was putting spells in his breakfast cereal so unfortunately that derail his career but now he's with us. So yeah we took an allen that one but you know what I say Dad. Every loss is a learning experience in this case. There were a lot of elements to this learning experience. Tim Journey with us on ESPN radio. Mike Ryan is handed me a list because he doesn't think that I should do this without being journalistically responsible and he's handed me a list of some real questionable things on this roster though you say there are a bunch of fine young men but there's some stuff on this roster that's fine Gael finest young men. I've ever known my entire lots all right. Well tell me about some of them. Then this giles. Not you've got him playing cornerback and quarterback. What's his story? Giles is a young man. Who can it can as arm like a cannon Every time you talk to them doesn't blink constant I contact and and to me. That's very important Entire Time I've known him he's never once broken out contact and he's got a cannon for an arm and guess what he did. He bumped into a gotcha journalist. Years back this kid was forced. Four crew lost all is scholarship offers. Because he made a mistake he did in fact One Night Show parts of his body. You're not supposed to show to to a very cute young girl. Who's trying to flirt? And his flirt went a little off the rails and he is technically a registered sex offender. Okay so technically. He's a sex offender. He's also someone who doesn't blink in fact he exposed himself. That's really what he did several times and then was quoted on the local news. Is If you don't WANNA party closure out all my bad my hold on. I'm with you. That's my fault. That's my fault. Yes give a lightweight version and then you hit me with the well. This is what I'm reading here. Juliette gals jobs mcnutt one of the finest young men it over my life. You know what I love about jazz to never breaks contact the entire time. I've known him. I swear to God Dan I don't think he's ever blinked. And this kid has a Canon for an arm is got wheels like you would not believe. And yes AH gotcha journalist. Busted him he was a four star recruit. One night to flirt with a girl. He went a little too far. And that's it is career is over with flirting is a little soft there tim. There's some details here that dino he is a serial exposer of himself Oklahoma Museum of Science in two thousand and eighteen car wash in two thousand and nineteen. There's more than you're giving us here. I mean yes is technically registered sex offender he has shown unmentionable body parts to women but I think he said it best. He was on the local news afterwards and took some flak for this but I thought he called it out. He says he said look. You don't WanNA party closure is and that's all he's doing he's just putting out there in a way. It's it's a form of honesty all right. We'll give me some more honesty about some of these players on your roster the running back. Who's your running back. Rick Franch Shell. Oh my God I love this kid. He's a bowl and he's a bully runs four or five. Forty is what he is. And you WanNa be you wanna be in the trenches with this kid is going to have your back running back and defensive end and what is good about him what what makes them special. I mean he's a kid who has some bumpy times. He's young Dan. What makes them special? He's out of here in a a rusted out Astro van with me looking for competition. That's what makes him special. This kid was a former two star recruit and because of a high school. That's it is. Career is over because of some guy like you sitting in his beach house one to put notches on his computer. What was the prank? He he has friends who were young. Blew up a cow with the stick of dynamite is senior in high school and he took some flak for yes. I don't know what you have in front of you. But he does have a face tattoo which I understand.

"So I'm at weekly fifty dot com. And it's the word fifty not the number fifty. But that's my blog. And that's where you can find the most you'll get all the text. The text right up and you'll get the the photo in the audio commentary from that there's a link to go to YouTube, my YouTube channel is just weekly fifty. So I suppose if you Google YouTube weekly fifty to find that. There's also the my all my photos are hosted on flicker, actually. And if you talk about long-term, maybe one day, if I get enough Michael is not YouTube subscribers, but if I accidentally get enough YouTube subscribers then I would like to get a flicker pro membership and use YouTube income to pay for flicker pro very so that a long that's a goal, right? I do that. I think that's an attainable goal there. And so I my photos on flicker because it's a it's a great way you actually interviewed the gentleman from smug mug to Stor. Yeah. And I've been with flicker from like for ten years. Flickers awesome. I hope they never go away. And it sounds like they're just only gonna get better. Now that smug smug my bottom. Absolutely. And my photos are on flicker as well. So anything on weekly fifty is just pulling from my flicker, and it's just using the imbed code from flicker, and that helps with bandwidth on my blog too. So I don't have to get a Bill from my my blogging provider gives me I know all about that. Flicker can pay for that. It's it's it's okay, right. It's a catch twenty two having having a large amount of traffic and then paying for that draft. Now, I got to pay for it. I mentioned one of the thing that regarding the way in which weekly fifty helped me and ultra make this quick. I on a trip to Nebraska recently. I was I was driving along on this backwards. Back roads highway. No one else was there. And I saw the sun was setting. And I thought I'm going to pull over and take a picture that sunset, and I just sat there for about fifteen twenty minutes watching the sunset and just taking it all in and my I specifically had weekly fifty mind. And I thought I'm going to get a really good photo for my blog. And as a result, I got to experience a sunset amid western winter sunset like I haven't sat through in years, probably decades. And it was so cool that I forced myself to do that. And I would have never done that if it weren't for weekly fifty and I can look back at previous sunset photos. I've taken put on the blog and. The one I took earlier in January, which I think goes live on March twenty seventh. I can I can tell you. It's the best sunset photo I've ever taken. But it's probably not the best ones that photo I will ever take because there's always more sunset photos to take. And so having the blog has allowed me to have some experiences that I would never have had otherwise just because it's in the back of my mind, and I'll think wait a second. I gotta pull my bike over and take a picture this boombox on the side of the road because I've got weekly fifty. So it's it's been really cool to have that. And I hope other people would have that as well. If they start a similar project. It gives you a reason right. A reason for your photography versus you know, we put on Instagram and get a couple of comes up. You've added a couple of layers to that where it's education, it's inspiration. And it's an ongoing it's an ongoing project. So I think it's brilliant kudos men. Congratulations on on doing the fantastic. Like, I said, I'm stealing it from you. I will credit you. I'm going to do this. I'm doing a weekly something. I don't know what it's going to be. This is great. So. Okay. So we'll Simon rings. Thank you so much for coming on. I appreciate your time. I'm inspired. And I'm excited to get started. So we'll leave it there. So you have a you have a good evening. And I'm looking forward to your next posts on the weekly. I appreciate being on Frederick. Thank you very much. You're welcome. Okay. Take baker..
