Is Tutu Atwell Too Small to Succeed in the NFL? - burst 04

"Is thereby do like the fact that kyle amaury stole from the ball but now we are going to hop into a guy that went fifteen picks earlier in nfl draft. A guy that. I absolutely love allied larger more. He felt a second pick of the second round. And i am adjust fan. So i hope i'm not too biased here by do absolutely love elijah more because you look at the offense there. The new york has in place and the did geico davis and they do have them. Zal dumbbell mims there too and jamison crowder and you may think while there's a lot of receivers here but fact of the matter is the jets spent high draft capital. Two goping get larger more. If they're picking him with the thirty fourth pick of the nfl draft when they have all these other holes on the roster. We're talking edge quarterback you can make the case that they probably should have picked a player that was an edge or cornerback but they went ahead and they pick the larger more probably because they had a first round great on him and viewed him as one of the top receivers in this class. And if they didn't think that he could he could become a number one number two receiver. The offense and zack wilson. They probably wouldn't have bothered. They're in picking eligible more. So i think that you have all these. Ribisi were twos vibrancy. Threes in newark. Don't have a true alpha by receiver one in york and you saw gems on men's last year yes. He had injuries throughout the season. So we didn't really see enough from him but clearly the jets haven't don't believe him enough to be born receiver because they drafted elijah more. And when you're looking at college football last season devante. Smith had a great season but a lot of people are not talking about elijah more enough and i believe elijah moore had the second most receiving yards in college football last season in a shortened season. So this is a guy you can make the case for is a very very good receiver and it was. It was definitely disappointing for him. To see 'em fall out of the first round. But i absolutely love this landing spot with zach wilson in leiden. More both being rookies. I think the chemistry is going to develop an plus alleged. moore's blazing fast receiver. He can like a four three forty and this is the guy. That's an impressive rat runner to me to really has a little bit of it all. He may not be the biggest receiver the biggest taller receiver. But i think that he s potential to be a slot receiver a coup number for the jets in years to come so i am all about allied more this year and going forward i think there may even be better than rashad. Bateman and may be the third or fourth fest receiver in this class. Well i just wanna stay for the viewers. You know anybody. That's been listening to us. Knows that you're not just being a homer on him because you were higher than just about everybody in. The industry like the entire draft process before the draft. So i know it's not just because he landed at the jets because i would call you crazy. It was just for that reason. But you know i think you make interesting cases you know it you also knowing you. You're not a very high. You weren't high on the corey davis signing. I don't think that you're surely how on mims of abbas really really Into mems last year Going the draft process. I did not end up with him on any teams because his a draft dot com just started skyrocketing and he the point where i was taking pittman over them. Still then you. I wasn't getting him. On the turnaround you know because i also claypool and gibson ranked ahead of them but Like mims and i thought he was actually a really really interesting prospect. So at night we're willing to give on him after He's got that alphabet. I'm not willing to give up on him after a year. That a complete dumpster fire in new york last year. You know they have a completely new offense. I corey davis kinda showed that he could be the number one wide receiver. Antonio brown was hurt. Leisure you know most of those. Those guys actually kind of started splitting targets down the stretch about pretty pretty evenly. So i do. Think that Corey davis they paid him. I think they're going to at least attempt to get him. The number one spot and i do think mims profiles really well and the outside as well Us why they went out and got him with that pick. What corey davis and mims strengths are like down the field jump ball situations whereas i think Allies more profiles more is like underneath guy that can can really thrive if he gets volume. I just wonder how much volume is going to be there. If they're not running a dominant amount of sets of three watersheds. Because i do think that the other two receivers with their bodies and big catch races will Out snap him on the outside while it's interesting that you're high on Corey davis. And i know i've said before the not hot high in corey davis so i think that's another reason as to why i'm higher on a lighter more. I'm just not buying the fact. That corey davis succeeds in new york. Two years ago not last year but if we look back two years ago and a lot of people probably have wiped out from their mind. But i have not wiped that season from my mind because i was big. Encore dave's heading attest season and he completely let me down lake completely. Let me down. I'm not even sure. I'm thinking was probably healthy the entire season and i'm not even sure if he finished as top fifty receiver in the league and so fast forward a year and had a very successful year with the titans. I'm not knocking him. But here's a guy who was picked with the seventh or east kick in his draft and he was supposed to be the number one receiver for titans and we never really saw that work out for the titans. And i think they declined his fifth year option. So there's a reason why the titans aren't holding onto corey davis and i think unfortunately core gape is a receiver who can be great here and there like a devante parker. But he's not consistent enough. He's not a true number one receiver. You gotta in a way force in targets from the be successful. And i think the jets are just gonna realize the gecko that our number one receivers probably larger more in a number two receivers probably summons so. I'm not scared about corey. Davis getting targets. People were saying the same thing last season about shod paramount and how he was going to have a huge role in that new york offense and what happened in bre shot parent. Who by the way. I was extremely on extremely law. Shot payment last year. What happened to be shot. He did nothing for that offense. So i think just because the jets went after core gave us that doesn't mean that he's going to automatically demand targets. It's zach. wilson's offense now. I think zack. Wilson is going to gravitate Skies like elijah. More over corey davis and a jamison crowder dems. I think the alleged moore will end up being his normal receiver. And i think that the ceiling for more is very high to it. Might it might not happen with a larger more by think by the end of the season we're going to really realize how good of a player that allies are more is. Yeah so

WNBA Preview: Seattle's Dominance, Ionescu's Return, Rising Rookies

"So shantelle. The wb is about to begin. Its twenty fifth season on friday. You know every sports league has taken a pretty big hit the pandemic. what's your sense of the state of the wnba. As the twenty twenty one season gets set to tip off. Well i think there's a lot of ways to look at that question in terms of the on court product. It's better than ever. It is the toughest league in the world to get into in a typical year. There are one hundred and forty four spots. Twelve teams twelve roster spots. That's it but because of the new. Cba and salary cap numbers of teams are only going to carry eleven players this year. So we're looking at maybe one hundred and thirty eight one hundred thirty seven. Maybe one hundred thirty nine women in this league and so the on court product is amazing. What they're doing off the court their initiatives the social justice council. It's important you could make the case that they were a leading reason. Why senate seats flipped in georgia. They're really important. League twenty fifth year is now also falling in an olympic year. And they're going to be back in front of fans and it just feels like there's ton of excitement coming into this year and we've seen over the past year as viewership has declined and a lot of sports. More people are watching women's basketball than ever before more people are asking for coverage more people are tuning into the games. The ncaa tournament for the women had its best year yet. So i think there's a lot of excitement and momentum in women's basketball right now

Baker Mayfield’s Contract With Cleveland Browns Extended Through 2022

"The Cleveland Browns picked up the fifth year option for Baker Mayfield. Guaranteed at least two more seasons of the man, maybe more. He gets that contract extension and he's eligible for He was selected number one overall in the draft. That included Sam Donald two spots after him, Sam Donald looking for a new start right now, with Carolina Panthers. You can also take a look at Josh Allen selected at seventh overall, he played at an M V p level last year. And then someone who did when the M V P And has a regular season record. This is just ridiculous. I think the record might be 30 and seven Is Lamar Jackson. Baker Mayfield is to do that's just like you would select the number one. How come the other two guys had better careers or better starts than you? Baker did throw 27 touchdowns that rookie year. He did regressing year too. He did light it up last year. Think Baker is the man. I think he is the long term answer. The Cleveland Browns. I think he is able to turn things around, especially with all of the talent that he has around him because he doesn't have to do it

"That's what the browns are doing then maybe a are the smartest organization outplay there. Oh we got understand your. The browns are taking baker ring shopping. Okay let's not act like they're so far away from four time commitment to sit up straight they at least take taking my dog ring shopping because they want to figure out a baker. What do you like would you went to at least know your styles. No you're flavors. 'cause you've done enough you've done enough not i fully but you've done enough to say yes. We want to pick up the fifth year option. We wanna show you that we're here for you with plans of the long term. We want to show you. We're not afraid to add to your contract. We wanna have you come in here sit down. Let's start talking about this type of extension. He's still got to prove some things. But we do want to commit to you long term. So i'm not gonna act like they marrying baker but sale. We gotta be real big dog. They at least taking my guy baker ring shopping and with the rian. Shopping comes pressure. Because you notice after you've got ring shopping logo more pressure just to make sure things go smoothly. Little bit more pressure just to act right like the do as the woman. It's a little bit more precious to make sure like a. Let's get to asya. we already shopping. We both know we wanna get here. But let's get there and there's no more pressure that comes with that baker go at I okay y'all might be rain shopping but what they did and they gave him a promise ring. They didn't give an engagement ring nine. I'm not gonna. I'm gonna let you have my class ring or whatever rabbit back at the end of the semester. I need you know someone else is gonna have to have that. And so we're baker mayfield. He can walk around with the letterman jacket. He has the class where he hanging on the and those he feels like he might be a brown forever. Hey but a short term. We still looking. We're still trying to figure out if you're really going to get that brought in by or not so baker mayfield may go to win it but i can go to win it one with the class ring on the necklace it. I'll try to bring up examples about reading shopping to a guy who's been engaged. One two three four times like me brother dane all the same. Let me just say that until you know they sell rings at the slauson swap. Meet too so guess. What gore shopping doesn't have to say ringing everywhere. Let me just go there. And i'll tell you. Total yourself star spending some of this fox oprah money you talking about i hate when i gotta go to the back of the plane which include better thirty acre about that are. Let me get my composure. Let me talk about this. Do for real There are no expectations higher. When you get an odd the deal they call it. Obvious deal like this is low interest rates. This is why everybody's trying to buy up stuff everywhere right now because it's cheap money you i've said it and i'm gonna keep saying i believe in baker mayfield in terms of talat constituency and also said you have to pick up his fifth year option. Because there's just too damn shape. So baker mayfield. Now you have the room to roam. They've given you enough lease to show. What kind of dog you really are. Because the dog pound is sitting there rooting for you. But you gotta give them a reason for you to be the reason that they believe in anything sell baker really. We acted like he had expectations but it was almost false height. Y'all morning workout six. Am let's go back to college. Was breakfast club one at work as we be pillows this fellas. Let's do this but really aside with dog. I'm trying to be in bed right. You got that false height because you have to try to make it until you make it. The browns had false hype brown. Baker mayfield when you draft him first. Overall like yeah. He go to say the franchise even though we said the same thing about ms l. didn't happen same thing about brady quinn. Ooh same thing about cole. Mccoy didn't happen and same. Thing about brandon weaned inhabit. Same thing about. Tim couched in habit but nonetheless. Gotta fake it. You gotta fake it a little bit until you can make so baker mayfield strolls in cleveland and all the and he's like oh i really don't have that high expectation so there's not really any pressure 'cause nobody's one before me and we ain't won a playoff game since i was born so too much pressure but now you just won eleven games and now you wanna play playoff game now. You picked up the extension. They picked up the extension. All of a sudden that hype is turned into reality. Ain't nothing worse than when you give somebody something and then you gotta take it back because when you give somebody something they get used to it you start eating goodsell first time ever went to vegas. I'm listen. I want my friend and her ex husband. I guess was one of the initial founding partners of the cosmopolitan hotel as all the cosmo. So i go. I stay on like the fifty. Sixth floor limos everywhere dumb room like i didn't drive it and take everything was catered to me. I said i can't go back to vegas like no regular cat. No more 'cause. I've already gone and i've gone at this height. The browns like we can't go back to cleveland ways. No more you've already taken us to the play offs the steelers twice in three weeks. And what a playoff game. Please don't make us go back to our own. Why is cleveland anymore. And that is that same pressure. Because now there's that expectation okay so let's live talk about baker mayfield competitive. I would say the dog competitive guy went for a walk onto a night trophy. Been number one overall pick. We have to understand that he's competitive. He's looking around at his classmate. And he has to be wondering talking about josh allen. Being a forty million dollar quarterback we're talking about the mark jackson a forty million dollar quarterback. Whoa i'm the number one overall. I want to be in the vip club. I need to get some of that dough. And so whether we say feeling the pressure internally he no he has to go out and prove it because the fifth year option is a bridge to the major contract and so he knows i need to ball out so i can have an opportunity to get one of those major major major deal. Because i don't wanna be in the back of the plane. Like i don't wanna have and in the soda water. I want to be full of meal. Cost all i cannot saying. You know his by game. Let me tell you albro work smarter not harder. Was the difference when you have enough mileage to where you sit in the exit row. They still bring you your food but the exit row actually has more space bars class if you an exit row with no chair ahead of you spend money. You're spending a thousand dollars on a fight in two hundred dollars for more than you got the same meal. Is you end up the same destination. But i'm having more money in my pocket wagner and even the close the really trying to i wanna make shoes dog and i don't wanna be bothered about what's going so paid one hundred dollars. Make sure i got a little separation. You don't say. I just like. I did when i was broke and be reused to clown what we at the same time. So what's the point you over. They're paying all that money. Because you can the different ride to the same destination. That is funny. I love the fact. Let me with this. You brought up. How a fifth year opposite is a breach to something long term limited to this just re tweeted it from my man warren sharp. Let's talk about some candy right now. Laters now and laters. I know we all cited as one word is now and alison mayors. Okay so right now. Beggar philip good and elegant you. A list of gaza felt good to when they got their fifth year option. And tell me how it sounded. And i ended up later. Cam newton top five draft a quarterback in their fifth year option. They picked up cam newton's right. But how is it right now. Interesting angelo pictures up soccer attack. Rg three takes his army. Mimi blake bortles. Jameis winston marcus mariota.

"What. A floyd is jake. And there's only one round was. Logan is logan to stop. Excuse me no. I mean yeah get caught but you gotta walk in nervous like. Isn't there a difference like you have to be nervous just to say that i could get caught. Are you like i'm fine. Oh he caught me to understand. You gotta be gotta be concerned with semantics at this point. Okay chance nervous sir turn nerves s semantics to you this way this. They're eight and three against the play in teams but they're three and eight against the top six seeds which is the teams. You go see playoffs. Should i be nervous about who to see in the playoffs. You kiss that. They have a loser. Record of the teams that go and see if they even get into a playoff game or whatever happens to the playoff. They have a worse record against the top six teams. But now you're saying be nervous about the things you have a better record in three years and even like it's not even eighty percent big dog. It's not it's like seventy percent. Yes if you if you're a student and you know you got to answer one question right and you only get one question and you are a cease student. I'd be nervous about that. One question coast told me. I gotta ruined moffat but six minute miles and he said you gotta run ten of them right and if five runs seven of them. I'm thinking i'm fine. I'm not seventy percent in his case eighty percent in class. You probably ever student but if something new can do seven out of ten times. Don't you feel little common jerry. Jones have visited the singapore. Tidying count pits more knocking. We'll tell you if the rookie would make the cowboys. A best offense in the nfl. That's next don't speak for yourself jerry. Jones is reportedly infatuated with former florida. Tight and kyle pits so it's no surprise. He's expected to be drafted in the top ten. Next week the cowboys have the ten fiqh. And they posted a virtual visit with pits. Were jones pictured a pairing with that press got that gave him a quote dream. Visions sugar plums around here. Kyle pits make the cowboys. The off the best offense in the nfl. So lovely one. They were the number one office when dak prescott was healthy last year right. So how do you get better than number one cow pits. You got the best offense dak. Stay healthy and cow cowpeas. Just do a cow. This does for closer. Dan mullen kotze florida. Football was a coach. At columbia is will dog. We had the basketball coaches must continue man. Joe white respect for our coaching staff. So it wasn't the coaches. We didn't win because of us player. Well anyway so. I did have a narrow focus on the florida. Football program watched him play a lot of football. I'm going to make a comparison because antonio gates was a rookie. When i was in san diego and i remember first day of antonio gates comes in with this basketball background little shifty big hits like the lower body so you knew that he had the power but he also had the shifting and was learning the game he popped year two and you can see his athleticism from hello a little deceptive as well because of this bill he is not cow pits couch. This is out of this world and turns athleticism as silly. the see. How athletic is a played against tony. Gonzales great these tony. Gonzales was a base basketball player athlete as well. Cow pits is different than that. So if you just talk about the base in which you can build a point. That's why jerry jones is talking about sugar plums and all that stuff like you see some amazing tight ends and even this guy looks different. Let's do at cal pistons and making it to number ten my enough now. We're not getting that far in draft. The falcons might mess around and take the forest by so cal pissing omega. But if he did. I would go. As far as to say talent wise they would be the most talented offense since the greatest show on turf. Yeah why his name amari cooper who's the highest paid wide receiver when he was paid. Zico elliott was the highest paid running back when he was paid that press got. Who's the highest paid quarterback when he was paid. Plus michael gallup who've gone four thousand yards plus eighty lamb who went for nine hundred dollars last year. Second most greg receivers plus the greatest tight end even as far as ranking since vernon davis came out. That is an offense. That should not be able to be stopped. They say you get what you pay for. An cowboys would have paid for exactly that. Which would be the greatest offense since the greatest show on turf to your point. Sale zeke plus gallup plus cd plus amari. They were averaging three hundred fifty yards of total. Offense went back was playing. Just four cats so now you take those four cats and you add a kyle pits. There's just no way you will stop to cowboys offense early less bring in. Nfl analyst bucky brooks to get his take so bucky. Would cairo pits. Make the cowboys the best offense in the nfl. There's no to song. How do you want it when they walk out like. How do you want this like we. You look at their offense artistic outfit and tied in man. You talk about him. Controlling the middle of the field. Like travis for the kansas city chiefs. Then the three weapons around him. Michael gallup de lamb amari cooper. Plus you gotta deal with executive elliott behind dak prescott. How do you deal with that. I mean you're you're talking about not the defend the run because you don't have enough body to deal with everything in the passing game. This absolutely would be a nightmare for defensive. Coordinator is around the league. They have to depend. And i know people didn't say yeah but they need to pick the defense amen when you're hanging forty on them you don't have to worry about the defense playing great. They just need to be okay and because they put so much pressure on the opposing team. You no longer can play balanced view. The opposition man. If i'm jerry jones no one did you have good plus dancing around your head. Because cal is a difference maker. He would take one step closer to getting their super bowl. They really want exactly. I mean deck in his last full healthy season forty nine hundred passing yards second. Nfl last year even though it was a compromise season averaging four hundred thirty one yards for a game before you can add a cow pits as joystick controller. Handed up video game is about to happen on the football field. Takes me back to when we used to play the indianapolis colts when they have squad. I mean weapons and numbers and our coordinators to come out and we look at the scoreboard colts and say bills in zero zero clock at fifteen minutes like that clog up their line right now. I'm telling you right now. They got some points on the board. I don't know how much they already got some point before. They even stepped on the field if he were a part of this lineup. Trust me every defense with no. They're already points up scoreboard. We all know the answer. Which is yes you would make them. Great scenarios dive into why. Because the why is this buck. You a secondary. I'm the linebacker position. If the cowboys offense out there with cd-rom michael gallup blake. Jarwin mario cooper instantly like go ahead and take blake jarwin bucky thing gordon. Garcetti lehman a we good but now they bring cayo pits on the field instead of blake. Jarwin now my option is. I got a guard. Cayo piss or i got a guard. Who ceedee lamb michael gallup. Now a lose lose which means now. You've gotta take acho a linebacker field and you've got to bring in another bucky brooks. That's cool but the point. What happens now if they turn around and hands zeke the ball now bucky got a mess around tackle a two hundred twenty five pounds. Zeke you elliott. That's the point of how do you want if so the what is simple. We all get that the cowboys are gonna have a ridiculous offense if they add kyle pits but the why is there's really no way to go right on defense usually. There's one sorry offensive receiving threat. And i the sorry covers linebacker over like. Oh yeah. that's me me down when our ain't no sorry threats.

michael gallup nine hundred dollars jerry jones two hundred Zico elliott antonio gates seventy percent Gonzales san diego five Dan mullen kotze Jarwin amari cooper one question last year six minute vernon davis Logan three hundred ten

"His done in cleveland compared to what everybody has done in. Cleveland aren't the greatest to walk through the school in thirty eight it. He's the smartest kid dumb school so good for you. But you know what we're gonna have to give you a standardized test for you. Get into my university. Here's the standardized test Baker mayfield a quarterback in the nfl. Why are you thirty. Third ranked and completion percentages. That's a bad sat. Oh baker mayfield wiser passer rating twenty seven. Oh you ain't in columbia. Maybe maybe texas. Let's go here. Oh baker mayfield. Your whip percentage. Even eighteenth pay her. It's okay valedictorian metal. Ring whenever they give them guys at these basketball's but that's not good enough not cutting it on. Nfl complete level coming up. Anthony davis back with the lakers. Still loss will tell you if la should be nervous about. Playing tournament is coming. But first tom brady is clearly not a fan of the nfl. Changing the uniform number group will tell you if he's over reacted that's next on c. Tom brady is coming off his seven super bowl win so we should be happy but not so fast the nfl. Pass the expanded jersey number rule earlier this week which will allow some players including defensive backs linebackers to wear numbers in the single digits. Well tom brady is definitely not a fan of the new rule. That goat posted. Good luck trying to block the right people. Now you're gonna make for a bad football but he wasn't done posted a screenshot of the rule change. Why not let the lion. Where whenever they want to. Why have the numbers just have colored. Jerseys number dum dum extra dumped. Wanted to dumb dumb dumb sale. Is tom brady overreacting to the new number rule change. He's not overreacting. Thank you tom. Brady the goat for thinking of little me and us linemen out there in the world you know into trenches the hogs of us now. He was saying this tongue in cheek. I'm assuming you just read that way but selfishly speaking of course this had more hype than impact. I'm sitting there. Like i was taught you ever light up one of those firecrackers and you're like oh man. My homeboy had a ban. Let me just say that. Tj sticks they call them m. eighties. We'll bring. that's what i expected out of this boom. Let the and where would they want to wear a widely. If you were still playing you could wear number. Three's stuff like that because the nfl right now lost a lot of excitement. Energy revenue and also production. People don't even think about this one thousand nine hundred forty one. Nfl linebackers to wear jersey numbers in the nineties. You know what happened sacks by ninety eight day twenty ten when a allow the deepest lobby to wear numbers in the fifties ugly numbers. But still it's in the fifties sex went up about twenty nine other numbers that happened in the numbers went down. But i'm not gonna bring that up. Because i didn't help our argument is this. Don't be the no fun league. Nfl right now. Open it up. Open season twelve season. Where whatever you wanna wear one all of the jersey companies out there whether it's nike or just anybody selling memorabilia is yes because already have the ninety nine. Jj watt now. Get the number nine days and then he has to go back to whatever rules. You wanna go with going forward to point is. They missed the moment. And tom brady pointed it out so you think tom. Brady's main aggravation of frustration is coming from like the fact that offensive linemen. Don't get the luxury of the change. Yeah i think he really is sitting here saying i. This is not for all so why even do it. Okay fair fair fair. So i was thinking myself sale. You know me. i'm trying to figure out. What are the other issues here at play for. Tom brady and i realized. I don't know if it's just the fact that his offensive linemen they don't get an opportunity to wear whatever number they want. Wear but i think it might confuse tom. Brady 'cause if you're a quarterback remember as a qb you gotta set your front district played defensive you gotta figure out whereas the extra rusher fifty one bingo. You got to figure out what he has to russia's coming from and when there are different jersey numbers it will confuse you my experiences. My expertise played mike linebacker so it was the quarterback of the defense. I'm gonna show. Y'all why i might be confused with the jersey number chains and how it could lead to initially. Let's go to the big birds. Tom brady might be mad. Fell to your point at the discrimination against offensive lineman but he might be mad at the confused and so i'm a linebacker. Y'all going to be the linebackers here. You all are going to be jalen smith. The linebacker for the cowboys. Who was wearing a high white sox. The all going to be jalen and it's gonna come back in a second. Now if you're jalen smith you have to tell your outside backers where you are rushing from you have one outside backer. You gotta nickelback. They have to be on opposite sides of the formation. In the picture behind me. You're outside backers album smith. You'll stay on this. Green nickelback has highlighted at the top and outside backer nickelback on opposite sides of the formation. You're the mike linebacker your jalen smith. You are making the call us that hey rock rock. All that means this. Hey right outside. Linebacker you are rushing. You are the fourth rusher. Alden smith you are rushing. Y'all stay on the screen with me. Now because eldon smith is rushing. I- jalen smith and guarding dan. Arnold tight end and at the top. My nickelback is guarding larry. Fitzgerald simple like bodies unlike bodies linebackers covering tight ends nickelback covering receivers. Let's move the screen. Because if i'm now changing and i'm guarding a tight end. I can do that. I just showed joe. Jalen smith is guarding dan. Arnold alden smith as blitzing at the top larry fitzgerald is on jorge luis fast easy. But what happens. If i don't know who the tight end is because he's wearing a different jersey number. What happens if all of a sudden. Dan arnold who is number eighty five comes out something that i can't recognize. Move the screen because if he comes out in jersey number that i can identify them is jason smith. Don't know which way to designate the fourth rusher remember. I told y'all dan. Arnold is number eighty five but say this season he comes out wearing number twelve so now number twelve. I don't know what position he plays. The a tight enders. He a wide receiver. So now i'm jalen smith and instead of calling my fourth rusher. This way. I call my fourth rusher up top. Where was now. jason. Smith would end up. Guarding larry fitzgerald and my nickelback would end up guarding tight. End in dan arnold so i understand why the number switch might be an issue beyond just simply the discriminatory aspect of it all but it might start to confuse defensive. Quarterbacks which are the linebackers and offensive quarterbacks which is simply the quarterbacks oh man so we talk at discrimination and production issues. Right there one. I just want to say. I'm glad i played linebacker. What the hell are y'all doing before the play everything. What is trying to work down. Simply and again for your. Nfl former players are watched us understand. Try to simplify that. But my guys my gals the viewers but still as a quarterback of the offense or quarterback of the defense. You always have to designate. Who your fourth russia raise right and so you might defensive end outside linebacker so you can talk in this manner if i see my tight end on the right side. I'm saying hey marcellus you're rushing. You're rushing. I the linebacker on the right side and guarding the tight end. Yeah but if. I don't know who is say. Hey marcellus rush from the left. And larry fitzgerald was on right now. Have to guard. Larry fitzgerald and the only reason i would be confused as because linebacker eighty number. They likely tight end. But all of a sudden you come out in a twelve and eleven and nine. I don't know..

"fifth year" Discussed on Speak For Yourself

"In each of the first. Three seasons are many andrew. Luck and baker mayfield so it is a formality with opportunity for him to go and grow and beat a franchise quarterback they want but however less not read too much into this as well. Because they're starting at the back of the line for fifth year option quarterbacks about that are they trying to pick up josh allens fifth year option right now. They know they're trying to pick up the marge xs right now. Know what they're having bigger greater conversations about franchise quarterback money hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars not teddy bridgewater slash tastes. He'll money they're not talking those pennies. They're talking big bank and in this situation baker mayfield. Hope he looks in a mirror and realizes people have passed them up in his same draft class. Imagine that acho. I know you competitive. I know you're mentally competitive. Every athlete is hopefully every person is out there in their own world and endeavors when i got drafted fifty to fifty three on back. You're a passing me like orlando pace head pro bowl year. Oh the number. One pick. And mike glad i never want to the one i gave you a little bit of a pass with fifty three hail and there's some of them did past the point is baker mayfield and your draft class and your own draft round in the first round. Couple gosden past you up already in. This conversation is on you this opportunity this commitment or lack thereof. I don't think you counting the reality of the blessings of the situation. What do i mean by then. Formalities aren't always formal. What are they infidelities because no formal is to be officially sanctioned recognized. Right don't formalities. Always recognized what. I mean by that you go to dinner with somebody esten theory as a formality which wife and theories of formality to open a door kid here s a formality to pull the chair out and theory. Formality before maladies aren't always formal formalities. aren't always recognized. because don't everybody open doors. Don't everybody pool chairs out. Don't everybody do that and acknowledge formalities. So while you may seemingly scoff formality. My point is very simple. i listen. I've got a twist to be all these formalities. Always formal not. Every first round pick gets that fifth year option picked up even if they have performed better. So what does that mean. If i'm picking up the fifth year option even though baker mayfield first. Three seasons haven't been as great as grand. As other quarterbacks fifth year option haven't been picked up then the brown see something they want to commit to the browns. See something they want to hitch their wagon to then the brown see. I don't think you see. And what i don't necessarily see yet in what i see a little bit. But they see even further than me which is wait a second baker mayfield is our guy because these formalities skoll fat. Oh not always formal big on board. Stop okay for formality formal. Whatever the hell we get to. I love it because you were talking about opening the door and chivalry right sir. I remember the first time. I don't know how it would. I will see. I'm different thinking. And i like it. I've ever see my daddy do that to my mama said open the door and then pull the door in a was like day. Then i'll start watching his eyes. He opened the door. And he's like no mama and daddy are you. Are you really checking my mom out. Oh that's how i got here. So the point of it is. It's not always intended that you do something for formal just trying to point that out. Go kiss that later. Here's the thing big beggar backfield got two years. Two years. how many to or deuces two deuces desk eighth get up outta here. Baker mayfield. All on you. He's on sale right now. And you won't like. This was on your christmas list like bob dad when you have kids going here this debt but some talks about christmas already december and we're right now in april. My son's like. I want this christmas this christmas bakers on sale. So when you going to get what you really want this war asked. If you're option for real you gotta pick that up a piece. You look around and you say begged on sale. Eighteen million dollars. Thursday night midnight. Friday morning we pick a baker mayfield. Meanwhile josh allen lamar jackson they own shelf you can't reach and that's what they're doing right now. I love the opportunity presented a baker mayfield. But i'm not gonna let you cook the books in a resume and make it seem like he's earned on. Don't cook what am i say. This kevin stefanski eleven wins in one year. More than each of the browns head coaches during last seven head coaches entire tenures essex like covers. The fancies eleven wins in one year. Big dog. I think this we can sit here. Scoff at the success of baker mayfield's having in cleveland. We've talked before. I got to bring it back again. We we have to. Here's what we have to or you are trying to compare. The kid is in school in the projects to the kid that was at the school. I went to saint marks where wearing uniform and as college preparatory. And you're supposed to be a national merit scholar. You can't compare sale them to cats and that's what you do in. Baker mayfield is in cleveland browns. At the school in project him lamar jackson who went to an organization that was in the super bowl. Six years prior won a super bowl six years prior compared year jackson. Lewis in an organization has proved historical competency. The browns the ravens have won two super bowls since the browns have gone to the playoffs right. So you can't compare baker mayfield and his educational prowess his athletic prowess in the browns lamar jackson in a ravens dare. I say you really shouldn't even compare it to your bills and josh allen. Because even they went to the playoffs. Tyrod taylor twenty seventeen somewhere. Can't compare my dog baker in his his his achievements in the projects. Big dog are the kids in private school. wear uniform. You know what. I'm saying where the teacher to student ratio is seven to one. You do not doing audit okay. I'll walk. Which you there okay. He's had a basque. Who cleveland browns. Historically yes yes yes but we gotta keep standards if you don't want to keep them level at least above board. He can't be valedictorian at a basketball with a two point one. Gpa that's just not gonna happen but that's what you wanna do dog. Listen to this gpa. Worst completion percentage worst case keenum worse than cow allen. Fewer yard for tipped nick. Mullins know how we feel about mcmullin. Their golf has more takeaway. Giveaways us say baker in two thousand eighteen. It's okay sebastian. The basketball i get it. But even from basketball's guys go to harvard columbia etc one offs but you can be valedictorian with a two point. One kicking baker. Mayfield is the difference. And i'm glad we here and i'm glad you're here with us because the difference is you can still be valedictorian at your school. Baker mayfield may pale in comparison to lamar. Jackson is done with the ravens. Lamar jackson went to an organization that already had a defensive was on point a head coach that has won a super bowl head coach. That had been there for years. He he he had. He had a general manager that was competent retirement. Talent around him instantly an eminently and they were sorry sitting here trying to compare baker. No dude s. Y'all please do this. When he's ribs. Compare baker mayfield to everyone. Who came before him. Compare baker mayfield to johnny manziel. Compare baker mayfield to brandon. Weeden compare baker mayfield to brady. Quinn compare baker mayfield to my dog. Colt mccoy compare baker. Mayfield to tim. Couch compare mayfield to robert griffin. And all the quarterbacks in between and you'll be like dang this the smartest student that's walk through here since nineteen eighty eight. We've never seen a quarterback this competent. We've never seen anyone this smart. Stop trying to leave the other school. That i go on there. Look at what. Baker mayfield.

Paperbark Maple: The Perfect Tree For Small Spots

"I found a plant. That i've known for a long time. I know younger ones of it. But i was. I was in a different situation last weekend. And i came across a more mature paperbark. Maple now i i. I have a client friend who has one that somebody teen feet. This one would be twenty twenty two feet now. That last four feet is not just in i. it's in width. Also paperbark maple is well named it has Bark like sycamore in the sense of peeling off. it's different colors as such and it's it's a bi colored plant even without considering the leaves. The leaf is a try type leaf for little little center stem and three leaflets. On each the twigs then are a well. I don't know dark. Brown glossy Anywhere for the first two possibly three years. then they start to what's called exploit. The bark literally peels off and within the fourth and fifth year. The the pretty brown is on out on the newer tips and it's then just simply shedding its outer skin and as it sheds at outer skin it makes it attractive darn near all year round. I i walked around the corner on a fairly sizable building. And the guy said. That's that that is a paperwork maple. He's how'd you know from from sixty feet. I could tell because the bark. I said then i have to look at the buds just to be sure but Quite a remarkable treat twenty to thirty feet it makes a wonderful vents small tree for smaller properties and so on and then of course interesting in its exfoliating season as well as a light shade now. Maples says the the norway maple in particular is known to kill lawns. it has a tremendous amount of routes. They're fairly close to the surface and they they will cause the area around them to be barren of grass anyhow Quite easily this tree. As i have seen them in the past and it fair sites and the one i'm talking about seeing the date has oh i don't know eight and a half nine inch trunk diameter at about twenty two feet or so so it's it is not even starting to kill the grass wonderful small trie for small lawns. And you're always talking about looking for ways to have a four season plant. Absolutely is a four season planet is now the the fall color is not the very greatest hits. It's an orangey. it's attractive enough by all means but it's not like a sugar maple that flames or looks like flame in the forest. But it's still very very pretty and then it has nice looking structure and then the the papery bark is from the ground right on up through the top except for the first two years of the foliage or of of the bark on the twigs. And that's that cinnamon dark brown Just absolutely an attractive tree for small spots.

Saddam works samsung's involvement is the strongest indication. That nintendo is serious. About updating the council on a large scale quote the led panel will consume less battery offer higher contrast and possibly faster response time when compared to switch his current liquid crystal display said co founder of display consultant the ds the latest model will also come with four k ultra high definition graphics. When paired with tv's they said that could intensify a longstanding complaint of developers who have struggled with the difference in resolution between hand-held and tv modes and now face a bigger gap between the two that can intensify long cynically. The nudist plays resolution. Mir's the current switch and switch life but is an upgrade from the switches. Six point two inch and lights five point five inch size if the consuls housing remains unchanged the new switches likely sport a thinner basil parris lilly. How do you unpack this. would you be excited for. Would you buy. Do you believe it. So i have three switches in my house already. My kids you're buying this no matter. What no yeah. I'm getting it absolutely. This is the one that i've been waiting for. I think the biggest thing that i took out of this. It's not only as an led screen but the fact that you're because of the power consumption is going to be less. You're going to get more battery life. That's obviously been a big thing that we've wanted with the switch in portable mode on thing which they don't talk about in this that i'm hopeful to see what whenever we we get the unveil. This is better joy cons potentially You know probably thinner. Basil's noted mentioned mentioned it in there as well. The fourcade thing is interesting. It's clearly the logical step to go when it's going to be in tv mode so speak. Yeah i guess. I really don't care when it comes nintendo with four k And i know there's obviously been some speculation with developer support on this. How are if it is going to be going from. Seven twenty pm scaling. All the way up to four k is that gonna put just make an extra workload for developers. Like i said to me if it stated tonight ep but it had better battery life better a bigger screen. That's enough i. I would be happy with that to me. The switch ninety percent of the time. I'm playing it in portable mode anyway. So i'm not overly concerned with there being four k in dock mode and playing that way so i mean i think a lot of this is true but it'll be interesting to see what what the truth looks like.

Bears announce coach Matt Nagy, GM Ryan Pace will return after 'impressive' finish to 2020

"Apparently matt nagy is going to make it to next year. The bears are gonna keep him the head coach. The general manager ryan pays. Who may have been more maligned than nagy. Decline the fifth year option trubisky. But it's still an option to bring him back in some way our jeff dickerson who covers the bears is essentially reporting. Nagy and pace will be back. Our dan orlovsky is voicing his opposition. What has matt nagy done as for his a an organizer as far as a leader as far as a person with foresight within their organization to say yes in that head coaching role. We love them. Now we're going to allocate some of the play calling responsibilities or the offensive viewpoint. Who are we going to give that to. And what has matt nagy done within. That building approve on great in this role. I understand what dan is coming from. But i think in this situation. He has a winning record. Chuck pagano is retiring as a defense coordinator so he's got to his staff and his thought process in his thinking. Maybe there's a guy or two out there that is really good at calling. Plays really good at putting a system in place to make. Whoever the quarterback is going to be in the future for them successful. So i'm okay with them taking a look see. They just went to the playoffs. So you take a look in just poo. poo it. because you've got to restart things all over again when you completely blow everything up so give it a shot in twenty twenty one see where it's at. He's going to be before you make that decision and that move now mr bisky mitch. Trubisky is jockeying for position to come back and be the chicago. Bears starting quarterback again. Now maybe there's a small deal there because they didn't pick up the fifth year option. There's a small little deal. Maybe there's a two year deal. That is a proven deal that he can now show with a new office coordinator his abilities that he showed in north carolina and made them take him as a number two pick overall.

Byzantine Fault Tolerant Consensus

"Everyone this is ted. I'm from cornell university. I'm finishing up my phd now my fifth year. I also worked part time at avalanches which is in our startup. i co-founded with adviser. Tell me a little bit about your phd work. What are your specific areas of interest. Yes so i think for the a democ- part you know as a phd. I mostly were distributed systems and that sounds like a very broad topic so more specifically within the systems i'm mostly focused on consensus and within the consensus topic. They are also different kinds of consensus protocol. I mostly focused on so called. Byzantine fault tolerant consensus protocols or t protocols. We are nowadays very hot topics. Pickus people are interested in blockchain technology and walk. Chang's need such kind of consensus in order to work. We'll definitely spend some time. Talking about blockchain byzantine fault. Tolerance is not as newest blockchain. So it's a i guess. An older theory. Could you help some of the listeners with the basics. What is bef t absolutely so. Yeah indeed. I think there has been like misconception. Many people think of b. f. Some kind of new stuff especially in that community even when we're talking about blockchain's but to me when i started my phd at cornell this of t kind of consensus as the coolest consensus at heard of at a time. And before actually dive into that world so what is not so byzantine fault. Tolerance has a weird name. So what is byzantine is. Sounds like the name of the old empire in l. a probably medieval or or some time period and the reason that this kind of protocol got his name as thanks to leslie lamport so may have heard of this research. His very well known ing Systems community clothing his works on taxes all sorts of consensus stuff. The also proposed the name for this new career of consoles protocols to be. Fd consists and beat byzantine just is part of the story if you read his paper about the whole consensus. So let's forget about the name of paying so what this protocol is usually about as maybe you are familiar with the phnom visiting kind of consensus or you know people usually call them crash fault tolerant protocols such as taxes or rafts so those protocols they work great and they're widely adopted by the current industry. Google uses passes as a core for cloud service and the reason that we need to another category of consensus protocol is because this kind of protocol a does not assume malicious behavior by the participating machines nose so that means than those can only crash build knows can only like human beings they can always say. Oh i die and then you just shut down or crashed without creating any noise into the channel into the network so then people begin to think about how we should handle the case where there some node. That could go crazy. Say i'm an node than when i don. I don't die peaceful eight. But i crave bunch of noises. The noise could be interfering the entire natural and even worse. I could be you know. Some zombie not controlled by the x. Turno attackers so i could exhibit arbitrary behaviour visit lab. I'm like a you know the insider send on by some other parties. So i'm like spying this system. So how do you handle this kind of situation in a protocol. While at the same time you still want to achieve the same goal as the noun byzantine one usually call them or crush full tolerant protocols we want to achieve the same goal but was different assumption

Los Angeles Lakers, Anthony Davis Agree To Five-Year $190 Million Contract

"Anthony davis got a lotta time. He could build a whole olympic sized jacuzzi now with his hundred and nine hundred million dollar contract. Five years l. c. Four years stared teed without an opt-out it's all guaranteed but i'm saying four years concurrent better said and then a option for the fifth year player option. It's look it has been a great week. If you're the los angeles lakers. Obviously it's a great week of your anthony davis and the davis family lebron james and the james family and it's been a great week for jeanie buss who you mentioned but i'm gonna add one more person. It has been a great actually. Great couple of weeks for rob pelinka and a guy that you and i and a lot of us have all a couple years ago now. We're critical of because there was some stuff and moves that were questionable but none since the last two off seasons and he has not only nailed it. But i think he had the best off season of anyone in the sport so he needs deserves all the kudos in the world.

Anthony Davis finalizing five-year, $190 million max deal with Lakers, agent says

"Or Chris? Paul. What kind of money in contract negotiations? Did Mr Clutch sports full in this league on LeBron and then a D and back to back days? What is he charged for? That One quarter, then 2% 3% no more than three right. I do have a friend. That's an agent and I'm doing this off in time. My head, but I think They get generally between what four and 10% depending on the sport. It depends the more you make, the less the percentages so I I paid agents 10% most of my life, but I don't make that much. But a guy like LeBron James when he's your buddy. Yeah. You know, I I would think probably 3% would be The going rate, uh, for that, but I mean, he did monster contracts back to back. On. It's the relationship with LeBron. I mean, they grew up together, and he's the guy who's got trained my green as well. And they all orchestrated the The Anthony Davis, You know, transaction to hold out from New Orleans and put on the T shirt that that's all folks and, you know, just kind of tanked on there all year and Even though they were a playoff team, and you made the point that They? They both got massive contracts. I mean, LeBron, a two year $85 million extension. Could. It could have gotten more I think and then Anthony Davis, a five year 1 90 he can get out of here is an early termination doesn't have to go to the fifth year. So I don't know. You know, the the roll back and in the B R. I Is going to affect most people, but I don't know if it'll affect them. There is a very top end. But I think they probably could have squeezed a little more juice out of it. To be honest with you, but they all signed back to back so We're looking at the Lakers being the dominant team in the NBA for at least the next three years and more. It's interesting that actually A D committed to a year beyond LeBron. So I mean, LeBron is you gotta play more than just this

Team Secret Cleans Up At Esports Awards

"Team secret for the e sports awards that i did not watch at all They one team of the year. They won player of the year which was nisha and coach of the year. Which is hain. is that all correct syndrome. Correct what do you think of that. So teamster again no. Ti this year and other other games have had the kind of their big tournaments some of them at least league for example but secret essentially winning the last. If you wanna take out the last few weeks has been seven plus money. I wanna say eight events in a row. Yeah seven months. They want everything just winning. Literally everything would you. I mean obviously our daughter bubble. So we're gonna agree right. The doda words everything. i would agree with. I don't know if i would put nietzsche's player of the year. I think it's hard to pick one. Yeah but he would definitely be one other candidates right. So i mean as it always is with these multi game award shows right. It's easy for us to say that these are great choices because we don't follow the other games that are part of it nearly as much to be honest with you. I don't even know which games are eligible to win in the sports category. If it's dodo leagues he has go rainbows. Six call of duty. Like i don't know what games are included in this is. It's hard to imagine another team in any game being as dominant the secret where this year. I think that's fair to say like you need to basically when everything right and not only that but the competition needs to be tougher which is unlikely once again because of corona because you know arguably secret even had a really tough region to play and while this was happening wasn't like it was just free easy wins because the region was week or something still tons of teams so it's super impressive I'm happy coaches got a bit more recognition so gretz to heen as well. I think he's really elevated this team to the next level they just started owning after he joined. I feel like it made a pretty big difference at least down the stretch Ceo good stuff. The thing about these awards shows though is. I don't know how much stock to put in the general. It's always cool for the teams to get recognition like this But i wish maybe it was a little bit more transparent a little more defiant. How we're going to segue into this next kind of mini topic of what do you think of award shows for e. sports in general because from my perspective i'm used to watching the oscars. I don't really watch a lot of other award shows at all but the oscars. I watch every single year. It's an event you know it's fun to watch. Even if i hate all of the movies which is sometimes the case that they just pick like the criteria just doesn't make sense to me sometimes like these artsy fartsy like movies will sometimes win for no reason. According to me but again like what criteria are they using. I don't know maybe you just don't have any taste. No that's definitely. I love in bruges. It's a great movie. Don't try to get out obligation. But what do you think from east perspective because when you look at the movies just as you know. Let's just do a one to one here. It's pretty clear. Even without knowing the exact criteria it's movies of this category but for east. There's just it feels like it's not as black and white. There's just so many different games. What is even considered an e sport. Technically speaking like. I don't even know the answer that question. That's the thing i mean. I guess the analogy of the comparison is really good though because in movies. There's also like it's super subjective. Right like what do you consider. A good movie is very different. From one person to the next head would be considered true. I suppose what it's defined as an eastport is a game that yeah but how many how big of a following doesn't need to have how significant to the price does need to be if i host a tournament in prague for one hundred bucks on eastport best escort because then then a lot of things could have won but now i i don't know what the criteria is and i think that's what we're probably agreeing on right now is that Maybe maybe are transparent about it. I just haven't seen it. I'm not saying that's not the case But yeah. I don't even know what sport is because like you said if it's just money than short that's anything could be in eastport if it needs to be x. amount of player base and have tournaments consistently running like whatever the case may be but either way. I like the idea of it. The fact that this is. I believe the fifth year in a row that their continued to do it is cool people show up to the event. There were ranked tuxes. They're trying to make it. That's where i don't like it. Actually they're trying to make it to. I don't know if mainstream is the right word but they're just trying too hard to copy everybody else like just let people show up in fucking sweatpants like were gamers man. Nobody wants to wear a goddamn suit. Unless you're a fucking psychopath syndrome okay. Being honest a lot of people do like dressing up on occasion. I think they don't like having to wear a uniform. It's like that all the time but for special occasions i think people like to do something extra like but honestly now that you it. I think it would be super cool if our award shows had people show up and team jerseys of their favorite team instead of in tuxes right. I think it'd be cool

Psychological Autopsy

"And suicide research. There's this thing called a psychological autopsy and it's pretty much exactly what it sounds like a snapshot of someone's mental state leading up to their death. A lead investigator collects personal. And biographical information and conducts formal interviews with family members friends and any doctors who may have treated them. It is a lot of information but the one voice that's rarely in the mix the person who died so this week we are doing our own pseudo psychological autopsy and reviewing tolleys story from five different perspectives tally through her personal documentation janice developmental psychologist sharon. Who we just heard from their middle sister noah and bhatia their mom. They were so nervous and i didn't understand why now i am too. That's all they told me all the time to be heard by a lot of people this i don't care i'm talking about my daughter. I feel comfortable in advance of our conversation. Noah and sharon assured me that i'd love bhatia and i assure you were not wrong. She is great. Bhatia was eager to tell me all about tali her oldest daughter and such an incredible blessing. I couldn't have children for like four years the fifth year. I got pregnant and head. Tally and it was the happiest day of my life. She had a wicked sense of humor. I mean she was funny sarcastically. Funny but She wasn't happy in right just after everything happened. I realized the chosen. Happy most of our life in putting this season together. We heard a lot of stories a key. Plot point was we had no idea. They were even struggling. This is not one of those stories. You know i remember a child like four or five my friends with us the smile and it five. I took her to a psychology. That wasn't a good experience I knew that her life will not be easy because she went bump heads with everything. I knew it's not the best but you know there were good moments. They're excellent moments but mo- yeah she was not a happy i while talking to bhatia. She kept reiterating. That tally was unhappy. She knew her daughter was depressed but still as a mom she never saw this coming. You don't ever think about someone killing themselves. That was definitely unexpected in tragedy. Lusts to tell the story of this tragedy. Let's start around. The time tally was five. The family had moved from israel to pennsylvania and they eventually settled in michigan. There was some culture shock language barriers. And tali really struggled to make friends in the depression doc. Tali tells this story about kicking her kindergarten teacher after not getting her way but he definitely remembers this moment she had to go to school and beg the principal to give me another chance after a while. The teacher's sister is from israel came to class and she said with dolly. It was amazing because she talked her in english. And tally answered in hebrew and they realized she's knows everything i i m sure that she was a genius she was. Interestingly tully doesn't mention this part of the story in the depression history she says quote. My mom tells me a story of how kicked my kindergarten teacher because she wouldn't give me the scissors. Which tells you that. I wasn't an easy child right from the start. There's no mention of the hebrew speaking teacher sister or her inability to communicate. She says she doesn't remember specifics. But no she had no friends and didn't get along with other kids. She mentions not getting invited. Birthday parties or sleepovers after school activities. She had a problem. She would make friends but she could keep them. That was her. that was her her character.

Maryland football mounts major comeback, sinks Minnesota

"Opener. Last night's winning a back and forth affair with Minnesota 45 40 foreign and overtime thriller and among the great story lines. Last night was Jake Funk, the fifth year senior back from a season ending A C L injury last year rushed for a career high 216 yards last night and scored the game tying touchdown in regulation. I mean, it was great the whole time. It was a fun game back and forth on, really, you know, I was seeing open holes. The five linemen upfront did a great job and tight ends to blocking and then also, the receiver's down the field. I mean, it was a collective team effort. I'm just the one who gets credit for rushing yards, but it's it's all 11 guys blocking Tell you what Talia Ta go

They Call Us We Bare Bears

"Hello and welcome to another edition of they call us Bruce and unfiltered conversation about what's happening in Asia America. I'm bill you. And I'm Jeff Yang and we are so incredibly pleased tonight to have with us a very special guest, a friend of ours, a friend of the PODCAST and a brilliant animation creator. That's kind of a big drum roll right now who's it going to be? But I'm here to tell you that it is in fact, Daniel Chong the creator of we bear bears one of our favorite animated series Daniel welcomes the fogcast. Welcome. Thank you for that intro. Man I don't know what to do with that that. Good now. All right. No for real. Huge. Admirers of yours and big fans of of we bear bears I've you know as much as possible I've I've kept up with it given. The fact of the world is basically a rolling apocalypse I'd. Things things we've your bears are the things that make life feel less like a total and utter shit show. And I will say We're particularly excited because we have the chance to actually take a look at the. We are bears movie, which is sort of like an exclamation point on the series and it was fantastic. I mean I have so many things to ask about say about it especially the fact that it feels like. I don't want to say this to overstate this in some ways, but it feels Kinda like an important movie in ways that I will elaborate. Thank you perfect for twenty twenty I'll say that But let's begin actually Daniel. By talking about how this got started in I mean for those of you who have not yet watch, we bear bears. It actually began as a web comic called the bear bears right. Three bear bears right shortly there and tells how that where that came from and I guess how this how this turned into. What it is today. Yeah It was a web comic that I had created it. You know I was working in the industry in the animation industry ad. I just wanted to make my own thing. And at the time you know people are posting things on blogs and stuff. So I created this comic on my own called three bear bears is kind of a play on Goldilocks, three bears and so Yeah it was. It was a comic that It was very like free for me. I. Didn't like really right out anything ahead of time I just kind of like A. Free associated as I was drawing it and nobody read it and nobody cared and just completely I remember going onto comic forums and trying to post it like, Hey, guys check this out in like nobody wanted to talk to me on forum. So it was just like. But but the thing is I was already working. So it's not like it was so debilitating. What was it? The only thing I had? It was just You know it is it is that was just it was my outlet that my special hobby I guess at the time. So but as I was in the animation industry working as a story artist for about ten years run by fifth year I was starting to get antsy I just wanted to create my own things. So I started taking these comics different ideas that I had started just flushing them out into pitches into stories and or. TV shows, and that's where three bears became weaver bears. I got to change that title for legal reasons apparently. Some what's called a some company owned I think there were a taxidermy company, they own something similar. So. You know now the title really means nothing at it makes no sense but it's So. Yeah. We're not responsive opportunity right there if you. Off. So. When you when you came up with this for the idea when he became a cartoon a series, like what were the kind of the things that you were like how did you pitch it honestly when I tried tried to explain this series to people who've never seen it? Yeah. It's kind of a weird thing to try to like I like the concept is such a It's so simple and yet it. So it's too simple in a lot of ways. Yeah and then trying to explain to the emotional complexity of is difficult. You know. I think the pitch itself was was. The visuals help a lot. I'm not just pitching words so. I think there are two things that were very crucial to well, maybe three. Crucial things to the the Bible ever the pitch that I did that help sell at one was the visual of stack these three bear stack them each other which you know I it was a very iconic thing in the comic and that was definitely the thing carried into the pitch, and so you know I pretty much started off the Bible by showing this image of the three bears together. So it just. kind of it's sort of just evokes a very strong image up the top. The second image that I put in the Bible was an image of the three bears mingling at a party with a bunch of Humid's holding like cups at a party and nobody is freaking out by them. They're just all mingling together as if they're like, you just talking about the weather or something like that, and that was another like. Important image to kind of sell here's the joke. Is that these three years nobody freaks out when they see them they're just one of you guys except there bears. So that was the other really important image to sell this project

UN chief names COVID, a ceasefire, and climate as UN75 priorities

"Let's make sure. That we have a global ceasefire, let's make sure that you'll have a vaccine and let's make sure that when we rebuild our economies through so. Fifteen. This. Is Colin from U. N.. News. September marks the most high profile period in the calendar the opening of the new General Assembly. session. This year is a special, the organization as it reaches its seventy fifth year. But preparations of overshadowed by the global. covid nineteen pandemic which has led to practically all of the events surrounding the general debates of the General Assembly being moved online. Ahead of the opening, you news may Yakub sense down an appropriate distance with the UN Secretary General Antonio Guitarist in this special that his own podcast find out what he wants to get out of the event and what can be salvaged from a year ridden with multiple crises. May began the interview on the subject that can't be ignored covid nineteen and Austin UN chief to assess global progress so far I'm very worried. I mean the pandemic Sean, the enormous fragility of the world's the not only ration- tool. The coffee that I mean, we have friend Julia. Climate Change to the lawlessness in cyberspace even to the risks of nuclear proliferation to the impacts of inequality. In the cohesion of societies but the the vitals that is a microscopic vitals has put us on our knees, and unfortunately, these should lead to a lot of humility in world leaders and to unity and solidarity fighting the coverage. Now that as we know unit, each country has adopted some strategy and we see the result, the vitals as progress to hear, and at the same time, there is not enough solidarity in relation to the developing countries and we see all in the. People are suffering so much and to a certain extent disease negative for everybody because. If we are not able to address properly the COVID also in developing countries. The vitals goes back and forth and. We will pay a heavy price even in the richest countries in the world. What would you hope government and community to do to overcome and emerge stronger? We need everybody to work together in cooperation, and now we have a good test and the test is the treatment and the vaccine. It is absolutely essential that the vaccine be considered a global public good people's vaccine and that we want have a competition of countries trying to get as many vaccines as possible for themselves. Forgetting about those that have less resources, we need a vaccine for everybody everywhere in affordable. The conditions because we will only be safe everybody's safe to think that we can preserve the rich people and let the people suffer. It's a it's a stupid mistake because there is no way. Everybody will not pay heavy price if not everybody is properly. Supported by the vaccination. On Climate Change Covid nineteen may have diverted attention and resources away from the urgent need for climate action and you have said categorically, people have to raise their voices. Business has to their site. Major emitters need to do more to save our planet. You'd recently said call is going up in smoke. What are three key things that must be done immediately for the Paris accord to work and the word to shift skier so we What is our objective? The objective has been defined by the scientific community. We absolutely must limit the growth in temperature to one point, five degrees namely at the end of the century for that, we need to have coronal throw in twenty fifty, and for that, we need to have a reduction of about forty five percents of emissions in the next. So the objectives clear. How can we reach them? We need a total commitment special if the big images to all the transformation elections, inanity, negative culture, you need history in transportation in all his whole life. We need transformational actions that make it possible to reach those objectives and it's very simple. We should stop spending money taxpayers, money and subsidies for fossil fuels. We should massively invest in renewable energy because it's cheaper, it's most profitable. It's it's not only the right thing to do is the best economic sink to do We need to stop the construction of coal plants we need to invest. In. New Forms of mobility namely through electric cars we've invested in either login that is the will of the future. And at the same time, we need to conduct the. Protection of Biodiversity Protection of forests transformation. In formations in our agriculture In, all these aspects we need to work together with a common strategy and with the clear objective, we need to be carbon neutral in twenty fifty. The twenty thirty deadline set for the achievement of these seventeen sustainable goals is really not too far away. How should world leaders refocused efforts? To achieve a disease after all, it's our blueprint. For a more sustainable and equitable planet, we'll because of the covid nineteen in the needles to recover economists, we are spending trillions of dollars at the present moment. So if you are spending billions of dollars, let's do it in line with the sustainable development goals that's fluid in line with agenda twenty thirty. Let's rebuilt. Is Better. With more equity fighting inequality, more sustainability, fighting climate change and all the other aspects of relevant in this Central Government Wolves beat the delegation of poverty be to the protection of the oceans beat. Seems ready to education to health to governance. So the the cover these threats is a problem, but it is also an opportunity because as to change. We can change in the right direction as we are mobilizing massive resources to rebuild. We can rebuilt in the right direction and our blueprint must be the agenda twenty thirty and disassembly Robbins schools. The UN has been around for seventy five years and you've called on everyone to participate actively in the UN seventy-five conversations. especially, those not often heard including youth you have spoke to you. But. Also, you were often in listening mode. What encouraged you from those conversation with us A very strong commitment of us to International Corporation The Yankees much more cosmopolitan than my generation. They feel universalist approach to problems. They understand that we need to be together and so the stand that we need a stronger multi-lateralism but the multi-lateralism that is also multilateralists in which they can participate a decision making. And these very strong commitment of the young people to ideas like universal coverage to ideas like the climate action to ideas like more justice inequality in our societies gender equality. Fight Against Racism all these aspects show a very. Young people. That is the biggest hope I ever to our. Common. Future. Some twenty-five years ago the Beijing Declaration was a historic turning point for advancing the rights of women. But Millennia of Patriarchy have resulted in a male dominated world. What would you like to see men do to ensure we have gender policy party and equality men must understand that it is these are. Not only of women to have gender equality agenda parody because the world will be better. It is relieving a male dominated world with a male dominated culture. That is why it is so important Indian which parity and we have done it at top level, but we need to do it everywhere. There is essentially a question of power. And we need to have I. don't like to use empowering women. It looks like we're giving bullet women. Power novel is not given it's taken, but we need to have women moving in order to assert their role in society, and we need men understanding that that is a positive thing for them. Mr. You've spoken passionately about inequalities and justice. The. Cause of many unfortunately problems in the war today. What are some of the most damaging example of these and how can multilaterism be the answer for all humankind to benefit it's very shocking from the point of view of wealth and income to see percents of humankind having more resources than off of the world's population. But I would say the most shocking aspects of inequality are not necessarily linked to money. It's equality linked to discriminations in relation to gender inflation to. Racist. Innovation to religion insulation to. People with this with ability in addition to the LGBTQ community. I mean we need to have a society in which cohesion is all objectives which we need to invest in the collision to make every community indigenous communities. Minorities in societies, every community to feel that their identities respected but they also they are part of the society as a whole. Mr Finally the ward the last word is for you. This is a virtual general assembly. Devoid from the usual trump far. But full of urgency and Gravitas and hope. What would you want? Would leaders and the public to take away from this UN Jason Of course many things, but if I would have to choose. Priorities I would say, let's make sure. That we have a global ceasefire. Let's make sure that you'll have a vaccine that is a global public good at People's vaccine, and let's make sure that when we rebuild our economies new to each governor. That was UN Secretary General Antonio guitarfish speaking to you a news current unit chief May Yaacob for the special three. UN. General Assembly addition of our flagship podcast the zone. "Like the rams bone uniform and this is this is one of the thing I I was thinking about and it kind of ties into the eagles and sort of the more muted green. What would you call a forest green? What they call it. Yeah okay called four and actually. I've heard that their black jerseys. I read this somewhere. Their Black Jerseys are actually super super dark. Green don't really I don't that's true anymore. But that's I've read that years ago. I could see that one thing. I was wondering though is yellow is so easy to differentiate for like the human eye like yellow really sticks out so You know I mean you. Had that in Boise where they decided. Boise say. Couldn't wear all blue uniforms on the blue turf because it you know it. It just made it difficult for opponents to be able to decipher the bodies Downfield and I kind of wondered yellows can yellow is the most the most visible The most whatever you WANNA call it. I'm sure there's scientific word I'll just call it popping for the for the Guinness but Like like the penguins had had a goaltender used our yellow leg pads and then someone told him like the yellow leg pads. Make it much easier for the shooters to see where the openings are. So why does she not wear the yellow leg pads anymore but I do wonder if that had some sort of role in not using a a yellow alternative uniform which I they don't have one right. They had just the blue and the bone invent a yellow one in a few days. If the if Nike suggests a good idea. I've heard I think Kevin dim off the the czar. The Rams said that they have other combinations that they haven't revealed yet necessarily I assume that they're bone white can also have yellow pants with it at times. I don't know if they have a yellow Jersey anymore night Yeah that's a good question. I don't know on that one now. But that's a that'd be one of the reason to keep the forest green and I think the the eagles should wear Kelly Green but if it does it blends in with the With the rest of the field. I don't understand. They manage the Kelly Green infatuation. I don't understand why people like saying Kelly Green Kelly Green Green. It's it's almost as much fun to say. His bones bones had heard bone dry. Of course I had not heard the term bone white but I like I get it. I like it. How many teams like? Because I did this when I was drifting off to sleep the other night I counted. How many teams do you think have traditional uniforms? Here's our Home Jersey. Here's our role Jersey. Maybe we'll we might have a third Jersey but we're not. We're not changing our damn pants. Every Week and flipping the jerseys around we have regular classic uniforms. And then these new teams that have the multifaceted new for its. How how do you? How many do you think are on each side? I feel like I mean. What do you consider? Multifaceted is is three multifaceted. Maima team and I'll tell you if they're multifaceted or not okay. I would think so. I think the team on the Will I do count? The steelers and sealers have healers would be classic for but they have like the the Bumblebee and they have the they brought back the the sort of eighties early nineties Different Font on the on the uniform. They had the yellow numbers for while correct. You have I think every team has a third Jersey so we have to understand it. Allow that okay. The teams that steelers in their road uniforms this week. What are they wearing telling you there will be wearing? They're wearing white with a yellow pants. There that now you know I mean that's to me. That's the that's how it goes. The raiders had the raiders. Ever worn a third they have their third is silver numbers instead of black. You don't have a lot of options when you're black and silver and white is your colors. Yeah and I don't like it if you can't see those numbers on film very well Forty niners have those. Those nineties throwbacks Kyle. Shanahan was a kid or an in high school in the time when his dad was on the team with those throwback so he likes him a lot. Yeah and I guess there are. I didn't like those as much as a kid that that nineteen ninety four year when everyone wore throwback so I had never seen that. That was a lot of fun back. Then Yeah Yeah. That was a that was good. I'm not a fan of that. Forty niners ninety throwback because that's when they started to not be good anymore well they won the Super Bowl Li. They've been did but after that they weren't good anymore. I don't I don't think they were after that though. What happened is what happened in that. Ninety four year is a lot of teams. Got WELL NOT. A Lot I remember. It happened to the niners cowboys. They wore the throwbacks. And then they came out with New Jersey's that were modernized updated versions of the throwbacks. The cowboys had the white jerseys with the blue sleeves and the white stars on top. And then they came out with the Double Star Jerseys. Ed Had Blue Stars on top with the Blue Sleeves. It was the niners member. After that ninety four season they soon went to the three dimensional numbers as there may numbers but they were back to the red gold and and black combination and they had to go pants again. But remember when Jeff Garcia was your Steve Young. And the Owens. Cotton Owens caught game against Carolina against Green Bay picture those univer- They had they had different jerseys and they weren't straightforward playing faced. Like they are now or like they were in the Montana years. I'm just talking about the the block shadow that they. Yeah but I've seen those new. Uniforms had the block shadow in them. They came out with new uniforms. That were a mix of the throwback in the current. That's Alice did Alif to dig on that one. You caught me off guard. You caught me unprepared for this debate. That's okay I'm I'm unprepared to If the answer though is how many teams have by my count. We debate all of them. I had sixteen teams on each side. Sixteen digital uniforms and then sixteen where it's like. I'm looking at the Falcons. Here with their uniform reveal and their pictures got I think seven or eight different guys in it for what their jerseys one. Three four five six seven and that's not even all the possibilities there they could still mix and match even more so the Falcons would not be one of those classic teams on. Yeah Boy Sixteen. That that's more than I thought it was going to be for is always relieved. I thought it'd be more than that kind of teams mixing it up and it's still might be nice. Nike is just getting started. Perhaps the Colts Goldstone have any third jersey. Do they coal to be a classic for sure? I tried to. I don't know if they do have a third jersey. Yeah I don't think they do all right. Good for them This probably a good place to wrap it up right. Yeah they did have a throwback Jersey that they were a few years ago. The colts did yeah and they were blue helmets with it. I don't remember that. Yeah they did okay. Well now. I'm going to wrap it up then. Yeah can't stop you now. Andy once again. Thanks for thanks for joining. Us and We'll we'll call it just goodbye for now. Sounds good see you later the.

"That's right let's go. Let's go to Gary uncommonly here at one more thing on both start by the way. Yeah No of course. Spent plenty of time there Jack Conklin really struggled his first three years in the. Nfl was great. Grape leaves very good in year four last year and I worked out well for me got a big contract because there are so few tackles if bowls plays very well this year. What's don't think there's a lot that would make you say he won't get a Jack Conklin type opportunity somewhere. I think is struggles have been I'm not going to take it back. Conklin I think it was every bit as problematic is bowls on his bad plays those first three years that's I'm glad you brought up that point. That was worth interjecting with good. That was not asked by the way I know I know I feel good about it. Let's Go let's go to Gary and calmly drafted twenty four zero overall by the raiders traded to the Texans last season's at the Texans kind of kind of Collected some sort of X. first rounders to plugging secondary but What do we make of calmly at this point? That that Texans secondary was I whenever I think in the Texans Secondary I think that the parts are decent to be pretty good And they just never add up to some. The party just seems like there are always issues with With with coverage is on the back end. Yeah I think that's fair. That's I think that's a good way to say that. This is the sum of the parts or whatever you whatever you say say it again. The the whole equals some of the parts thing. I guess they don't. The whole does not equal to some of the parts. Yeah that's right yeah. I think that's a good way. Yeah I think that's a good way to say that You can see why Conley was drafted. He was drafting. The talent is apparent. It's how much do you trust them? And how are you going to use him And then how much is his number? Gary What does he cost Woodman? Woodman ten point two for twenty twenty one. Yeah which is probably reasonable for a higher level. Cornerback Ya and and it was a little bit surprised look treated a third round pick and not that a third round pick is the the the end all be all and and bill. O'brien is certainly not sort of gone with a traditional Valuation of draft picks. But I was a little bit surprised at the didn't exercise the option just because you've already invested the draft capital and you know when let's say. Tommy does have a good year here When they sort of sit down with them it's it's GonNa be like well. I mean you gave up a day to pick for me. So of course. He got invest in me. Now 'cause you're GonNa look ridiculous if you gave up day. Do Pick and gave up on me after yell. Whatever it would be twenty games. Yeah and I think only down the theme with the show me just pulled up my notes and word searching these guys while we're talking here to Conley had some very solid second. Half of last season he had some nice moments. I think when you get into an expensive cornerback. The conversation has to be a little bit about how are you using him because corners a lot of their best work comes when the play does not involve him. That's just the nature of the position. Conley if he's getting the ten something ranges corner puts him about fifteen or so as a top in terms of cornerback salary. Bradley Roby's on that deal with the Houston now already at ten point five a year on average so that has to factor in as well. I think is is how much you're investing at one position but I I'm with you. I was a little surprised. Houston didn't want to to take the Conley option. Now if they if he plays great and they decided we have to keep them. Is that the worst thing in the world. How much money will they have lost by? Not taking the option for that fifth year if they do it that way and keep in mind if he plays great and we have to keep them. You're signing him to a long term deal so it's Y- you're still not. I don't think you're in a wholly different position than you would have been if you just use the fifth year option on them. The other thing I'll point about Conley Point out about comedy sort of India's defense is he has played behind some of the worst pass rushes in football in career so far because I mean look he arrived in Houston and. Jj Watt was hurt. And before that he played in Oakland behind those just you know post Khalil. Mack terrible raiders. Pass rushes fantastic point to a tremendous point in those raiders and Texan schemes. Are also very different. Oakland's going to ask you to be more of a zone corner. Did when he was there and the Texans have more matchup coverages and last year. The Texans really became a single high man to man defense. Did that more than any team in the league in some regards so connolly's done a lot of different things in his career as well. If you told me I had to. I had to have gearing Conley's one of my starting corners. I'd feel good about that. Okay anti before we wrap this up I and this is. I can't emphasize how important this part of the show is I kind of need your take on. The rams uniforms polarizing uniforms. I take the optimistic side on uniforms. Tend to be positive toward. I'll say this. I actually emailed chargers ownership after their uniforms came out and just said I have never seen a team's uniforms so well received not just in Los Angeles but anyway I mean everybody loved. I've never seen that happen. That doesn't happen. Uniforms are a great thing. That people can criticise and really. It's kind of a Freebie criticism because just treated that way. Everyone loved the chargers uniforms. I'm sure that factored into how some people reacted to the rams uniforms to each his own. How about that? Oh my God disappointing. Take all right with the universe. I really am I. I need to see how they look. What bugs me more? Our teams don't come out with just uniform. They now have co combination. We've talked about this. They have combinations. What different pants different? Jerseys heard they might get rid of the one helmet color rule or one helmet rules. Lots have different helmet colors. I I've grown to hate that. I loved that as a kid when the Cowboys Double Star Jersey. The first time I saw those. Oh my goodness I hate the uniform diversification. Now that happens so I'm gonna I mean that's colors a little bit when it's a team that's a classic uniform team and they fall into that. I do struggle with that a little bit now. The browns are different though. The browns went back to their old look and they're going to do the five thousand different uniform combinations and for some reason with them. It doesn't bother me a whole lot and I'm guessing that's because they don't have a logo so it doesn't feel the same way but I don't know why what did you think of the rams uniforms. I thought it was a disappointing I thought there was no reason to change the helmet. They already had the best home in in football You think so. Yeah oh I loved the ram horns well sort of ram horns. They're just sort of like you know. I don't know very geometry math teacher head horns at this point. I don't know what you call those painted. Their painted on Horn is what they are. That's what you would call it. But they are that. They're price sticker on their front painted on the stickered on. I actually have no idea what she meets. What's impressive is how often all the stickers were straightening. Nfl that that the helmets. They do a nice job of decoupling them. God I like your. What are they painted or decal or sticker? Decal I think painted I bet there stickered all right. Well how someone can still tweet us the kind of thing bet they do. We haven't exchanged emails like that in a while. I'm sure someone has done this story. And some tweeted at US but If not I'll I'll reach out to couple teams. I like it. I think I like it. When the logo on the helmet flows with the helmet like the like a Ram Horn or the bengals stripe. It's a Viking Horn like A. It's not just the logo. It's it's an interactive logo the wings. F- y'all back at the helmet. I like that I. I like it on some teams. I don't know I don't know because the more I think about it. My favorite uniforms probably at my core fate. If I took a polygraph and they were somehow able to tell what I really think is. I don't even know what I really think. Cowboys in the white. It's the niners in the Red Green Bay. Just the uniforms that. I grew up with straightforward. Here's the logo. Here's the uniform. The colors don't they look nice. Let's play this killers. Yeah I'm with that would I would. I really didn't like about the rams I didn't like the change with the helmet though. It's not a huge change the gradient number. I'm not a fan of it when you have them also yellow. Why would you dilute that yellow? I kind of I don't necessarily disagree that I love the look of yellow because it always looks good with whatever other uniforms out there. Always contrasts well with the opposing team's uniforms and I think that's a big factor so like people I know there's a big movement right now. Well not a huge movement. But it's something you hear all the time. Eagles should bring back the Kelly Green Jerseys I wouldn't want that because for one if the Eagles current Greens were the from the eighties nineties those are the ones everybody would save. Bring back bring back. Because that's what they had in the eighties and nineties. And it's it's cool to like that retro type of thing but I like it when the colors are diversified we already have that kind of green in the NFL. The jets are somewhat similar to it. The packers we don't have any other dark bluish. Green Eighty percent green twenty percent. We don't have that color anywhere else except on the eagles. So I like it. When the uniforms all correlate with each other across the League and I'm sure the League I was going to say I'm sure they look into that but maybe they don't because they let the titans pretty much take the exact same uniform approaches. The Texans and those teams were already hard to get straightened your head at times anyway. So yeah I I don't know but I'm glad the rams are blue and yellow and not blue and white. I do like the yellow a lot and I like the the bone instead of the white and You would have thought I wouldn't disappointed because I thought it was going to have to do with some sort of promotion with the show bones but it didn't. It was just the color bom first time I ever ruined something on a dvr. I deleted my sister's recording bones. She said I wanted to watch bones and I felt terrible. She's three years younger than me. You had a tough week as we were in high school. She's junior high and deleted her show. Bones that's all I know about bones. Icr's renew by. It wasn't like I was being awful. Yeah Tibo days I Dunno I I've never I don't think I've ever watching episode of bones but I remember when was just promoted nonstop and just a funny word to say bones but Yeah I I do like the rams bone uniform and this is this is one of the thing I I was thinking about and it kind of ties into the eagles and sort of the more muted green. What would you call a forest green?.

"fifth year" Discussed on The MMQB NFL Podcast

"By a special guest in just a moment. This is part. Two of the series were doing on the players who had their fifth year options decline. I know that sounds like a a terribly sexy title. But these are basically the first round picks in two thousand seventeen who Their their teams or in some cases a team that acquired them since then Just kind of said no probably not committing to these guys. Maybe we will. Maybe we'll change our mind after the twenty twenty season but probably not We got NFC last week that included Mitchell trubisky. Some of the guys there This week AFC no quarterbacks but a couple of really fascinating cases Coming out of the AFC south here. But we'll we'll get to it right now as I introduce our very special guests. You'll never believe who it is. It's Andy Benoy is back a jerry. How are you? I'm good and era. Your quarantine beard is. It's gas going everywhere isn't it? It's it was getting rave reviews and then somebody close to me said member what Dwight troops cousin looked like on the office. Kind of quasi amish guy whatever he was but very round beard kind of Multidirectional in terms of where the hairs were pointing. So I I need to get it adjusts. I need to trim it down. No I I mean look. You're not in full HD. As I as I look upon you here but I think it's pretty legit. Maybe the leggings do you favor to your your kind of got a big window behind me. Well with that said let's Let's get to it We are starting with the number four. Pick the two thousand seventeen draft Leonard. Fournette Look Contras. Big Unit was made because he is A. He's a power running back. He is not completely worthless in the passing game. But it's certainly not a strength of his. They did use him more last year. But it's just not no one's going to stick this guy for a Christian McCaffrey or anything but Yeah I mean for net. They are to the point where they're trying to shop him and there are just no takers and it sort of raises the question. I mean we saw with Derrick Henry did and not that for now is is exactly that kind of back. But Derrick Henry. Is You know the the the cliff notes version is? He is a big power back with not a lot of value in the passing game. Letter for that is kind of along those same lines. Is there a place in the League for a guy like this as a feature back? Well the difference between and I know we're not. You're not suggesting Leonard for night is Derrick Henry. But that's a great place to start the conversation and I think it I think then we have to understand what the difference between those guys would be. Henry is a much more powerful runner than for net. And his he has. He has a build up speed and momentum in an acceleration about three or four steps into his run. A second gear in other words. It's not really a second gear that it doesn't shift into it it. Just he's a build up. Speed Guy for net does not have that kind of gear for for net is a lot more one dimensional in terms of being a power runner. And there've been a lot of times. Quite frankly gary injuries have factored into this. Maybe we don't know how much you want to be fair. And he says something like this but there have been lot of times. Frankly were for. Net has not even been power runner where he's been soft at the point of contact and those. The coaching staff in Jacksonville felt that was an issue a few years ago and so he has not been able to run effectively when he's less than one hundred percent healthy. Let's put it that way you every once in a while you do see big flashes a foreign debt the power back in the subtle wiggle. But it's not there nearly consistently enough in when it is there. It's not nearly as dynamic as Derek. Can we would be. In that sense. He had seventy six catches last year on really. That surprises me. If if you're if you're a fantasy football player that That please you semi successes only five hundred. Twenty two yards off of those seventy six catches which also tells something of a story. But I mean like you said he and no one's going to mistake the guy for for for a true third down passing skills back here but Is His career. Could his career be SORTA carved out by inability to become like you know decent in the passing game? And then you have a guy who's sort of a decent run is decent the passing game. And there's a little bit injury prone mature. But now you're just describing any running back gets into the NFL. I mean that's what and that's where the conversation gets really hard as what is something. Leonard for net does that a typical fifth round. Running back would not do something. Dr- drastically better than the typical fifth round back. Yup Now I I agree with you looked at the Jaguars shopped him. There were no takers. I I mean what were you surprised at all that. There are no takers more milk because what we just said a team can those fifth round backs and and if you WANNA third right I mean whatever you can get a younger back. Who's healthier than for net? Who's going to be cheaper. Maybe he's not quite as good. Maybe but the bottom line. Is this style of runner it. We're still talking about a runner who is dependent on his blocking and who's pass receiving numbers are going to be a function of the offense and the way the action plays out so I I'm surprised for net had as many catches as he did. If you'd oblige in the espy. How many eggs? I would have guessed thirty five or forty last year. He's not a big facet of the past. I mean we're not moving him. All around the formation designing stuff for him and dictating matchups for other guys. The way you use him. He's not Austin or Alvin. Kamara doesn't mean he's not important in the passing game. He's not changing your passing game. So if Jacksonville. And other quite frank statement they had better receivers and tight ends. Last year for net would not have had as many catches. So it's it's I just don't know what you would what you would want him for nothing. Nothing is not a quality player but guys like that are common Gary. It's just a common. They're very common Jordan. Howard you think could get nine. Cowards a much better player than for now and the other remember had some attitude issues that has rubbed some people really the wrong way over the years. So there's maturity questions to some even if there aren't any of those off-field let's caufield maturity questions or injury issues is just nothing special there. He's a the catch twenty. Two for him is. Let's say he does emerge as a guy who looked like he was the fourth overall pick in the draft and has his breakout year in stays healthy in in two thousand twenty. He's going to get bang for the For the workload after that and on top of that going GonNa say well workload plus young durability I don't see how he is more than a guy who sort of bounces around year to year. I think he sticks around the league but don't think anyone's ever gonNA invest a multi year contract in the guy. I Agree I. I think he'll be a he's a he's a one two punch running back and he's probably punched number two in punch number one needs to be a scap back for you so like what the bills. Just drafted Zach Moss to accompany Devon single. Terry that's the kind of bag for net. Is Zack Moss? Type of guy in terms of his role different runners but in terms of the role. No let's go onto the We'll lump these guys in quickly because they they do play the same position Back in two thousand seventeen draft we have three receivers go in the top nine picks And then Patrick. Mahomes went ten but Three receivers in the top nine. Tixx Corey Davis Mike Williamson John. Ross Mike Williams did have his fifth year option. exercised by the chargers. So he'll be he'll be saying there through two thousand twenty one But we have Corey Davis in Tennessee and John. Genre watching. I guess. We'll start with Davis here and look the the price tag on these guys. For Twenty twenty one was going to be fifteen point seven million. We saw the receiver market deflated because of the You know sort of the historically deep rookie class coming in receiver and Quite frankly next year's rookie class of receiver is outstanding as well they. I don't WanNA sounds like a hot take Zaid's better than this year's we'll we'll see what happens but well. It's a very cheers was good too. That's GONNA be three years and a good wide receivers now at some point these. It's all relative if there are twenty. Good receivers twenty teams get them the value of your good receivers not the same as it is if there are only ten or so so. I mean maybe it's just a wide receiver league after awhile. I feel like two thousand. Seventeen was deep. Twenty twenty was good up top and deep and twenty. Twenty one is is great up top and we'll see how deep they go but they look like they're going to be pretty deep there but That's all the kind of make the point that you know accord gave us or or a John. Ross even if you were bullish on them and I'm not sure exactly why you would be but The Price Tag was fifteen point. Seven million for twenty twenty one and that just I mean we saw guy settled for much less than that and frankly players settled for much less than that in the free market last year. So Frankly I I'm slightly surprised. At Mike Williams had his exercise. But you know that's that's not A. It's not that eyebrow raising but let's talk about Davis who sort of showed flashes. Sometimes I you know you kind of wonder if he was you know like Marcus Mariota. Maybe maybe a victim of all. The schematic changes there and in Davis's case of course uneven quarterback play And then last year you know. Aj Brown took off for them. And then Davis was but he was fine is number two but he wasn't you know he wasn't wasn't a a a fifth overall. Pick of the draft type guy. So what I I'll be interested to see. We'll learn more this season when. Aj Brown arrived. Davis let's start Davis arrived in two thousand seventeen. He has the body of a big x receiver. The guy that plays by himself on the weak side of the formation lines up right up on the ball runs. Post routes go routes sometimes medium-range slant routes think Dez Bryant was in Dallas a few years ago. It's a great example of an ex. Receiver Davis was at style of body and therefore the expectation. I'm sure by many was. He's at style of wide receiver and he was inconsistent at times invisible or borderline invisible. And I think what you described as a lot of the factors that were behind it. Inconsistent quarterback play changing systems. There was never a constant in Tennessee this year. There has been a constant because or this pasture. Aj Brown arrived..

"Obviously just spectacular talent. He he was great early on in San Francisco. There was a domestic violence charge. Accusation was dropped Eventually after after he signed with Washington or I should say Washington picked him up after the forty niners. Let him go But he he has a lot of off field baggage that was coming into the league and it sort of continued into the League On top of that I mean look. He didn't get on the field last year. He had the torn ACL and L. Seattle Last Spring and there was nerve damage involved. And that's that's just that's a very bad thing You know we we saw like Jalen Smith. Come back from that eventually but As everyone knows jalen Smith was very bad early in his career in Dallas and became good Reuben foster has a long way to go to get back It was not a very difficult choice for Washington to turn down the fifth year option on him. The question is does he have a future in the league and that's just really up to what his recovery is. Yeah I don't think the off field issues. They take such a distant back see. They're still something ever team will consider and to count you know. He didn't get in trouble at all this past year and I don't necessarily paddock grown man on the back for that but he didn't have. You didn't have football so it's probably a little bit less structure in his life in there. Were no issues off the field. I think what it's going to be the knee that decides what teams think of him and if they like them they'll decide that his off field stuff we can live with. They'll say we have a great locker room. Every team thinks their cultural. Take care of it if the arts so sure. Don't like them. Then they'll tell themselves there's also the off field issues so those will just be a confirmation a factor. It's the knee in the stability of that knee. And that's anybody's guess. We have no information on that other than just what the reports have said. Here's what you need to know about foster before the injury when he was in for the niners you could see so like we talked about rhetoric and Jerry Dave's how explosive they are their explosive when they hit the go button which they can do very quickly and it's dynamic and it's better than most guys some guys a few select guys are just explosive all the time when they're moving laterally and just reading slowly and reacting there's such a firm graceful quick fluidity to it. They're just always on the go button. They're easy athletes foster. Was that kind of player. You physical traits. He didn't get a chance to blossom into whether it means he's a star or nodar what he could have been Because you still have to understand what you're doing out there on the field. I think he was a young guy. And he's coming along there but his physical traits were off the charts football wise yet. That was a look. We talk about the fuel baggage and that played a role in his falling to the end of the first round in the two thousand seventeen draft. he was guy it was funny. Robert go did a piece on him. come out of Alabama especially at foster also had an incident that combine where he was. He was unruly in the during the during the wait for the medical check in and they ended up setting home and There was a lot of stuff around that. But that's a big deal by the way because if you mess up the combine yes that suggests you've got you don't have the right people around you. Because any agent worth his salt would have his guy. It would be very apparent to the guy to not mess up the COM. It's it's a job interview for the whole week to get sent home from the combine unfathomable. So that that's an enormous red flag for teams in. No team would ever say this but I think there are some that would interpret that as a locker room type red flag as much as anything. It's within the business of football versus off the field and what teams would never say. Is that those locker room. Red Flags are much worse and more problematic off feels worse than real life but from a football perspective. Teams are Leery of that so anyway. That's I mean. Interrupt you but his his issues questions about the character of him are very. You were so significant early on that. They're going to remain significant for the rest of his career. You have to answer those. Yeah and he also had You know he had issues on the white board and stuff like that and Nick. Sabin basically said he's he's not going to be a good whiteboard guy but you know you teach them something and and yet you have in practice it and he gets it like he he just learns it in a different way And I would agree with that but I'm not a great whiteboard guy myself. I could draw stuff. I'm sure if they asked me to draw but I have to see the bodies to learn the T- truly learn the concepts. Which is why I watch film and I don't read books on football. It's just a style of learning. I could see how a player would be that way and a good. Coaching staff would easily adjust to that. Now Yeah but Room foster I mean. Look you root for everyone to sort of have it had it ended up well. And maybe there's still a good ending coming for for his career in his life at this point I mean it doesn't excuse his behavior. He's a guy who had a very difficult upbringing But yeah he's a look he's another crossroads and and you Kinda Hope. This new injury is not what ends up ending his career. But he's got a he's got a long way to go. I don't even know if it will get back on the field. Twenty twenty here. Yeah yeah all right on that. Bummer of a note will wrap this up. We'll be back next week with the AFC and look We're GONNA talk about lender for net In May we're not surprised about the fifth year option but he is a guy on the trade bloc here and There's there's a discussion with him beyond just the usual Don't pay running backs type of thing And on top of Me Coker. Coker was the most surprising if your option decision I think. He's a that McKinley line but on the other side of it where I would have given it to another colts. Know him better than than we know and we can talk further about him next week. I was surprised but then for everything like me cooker so I was. I was surprised by that one. Just wait until I tell you how affordable that fifth year option is for. Safety's you'll even more surprised at that point but We'll get into that next week Andy once again. Thanks for Thanks for joining us. You have to join US next week. Because we've already committed to it to doing a two part series here so We will call this goodbye for now. "fifth year" Discussed on The MMQB NFL Podcast

"Rettig he has to be an attacking scheme though where he's just going and getting the ball. Let's do another guy Looted similar this jared Davison Detroit and matters has said since they declined the The option that they they they they still want him there and it Cetera. We'll see that works out. He would have been do like redick. Ten million on the the fifth year option year. Had they done it Davis a guy who came to the League look at you look at the physical attributes and is sort of like well. Here's a linebacker. He just never. It just never worked for him in coverage just has not Whether you call it development or whatever it might be he just he's been a liability coverage so You know he's been blitzing. Moore's been rushing the passer more and there's something there I mean he's that's a strength of his. That's what he's done well but can they? I don't know. Can you get enough out of him to sort of you know rely on him as more than just a really talented but uneven type of athlete to put in the Middle? Your defense I think so. I think someone could still get a really good player in Jared Davis. He's really fit for a four three. Run CHASE TYPE OF SCHEME. Which is what he was drafted into the lions ran when they acquired him and then they brought in the Matt Patricia regime. That has a totally different demand on linebackers Patricia wants bigger thumping type guys which is why they drafted. Jilani to the second round last year and to violence like he's going to be really good player for them in that system so it's not a scheme fit with Davis. His explosiveness as a blizzard just jumps off the screen and wows you his. When he hits the go button and identifies a run play. He wows you there as well. He's not gonNA identify them perfectly. Snap after snap. There's some inconsistency there he's not he doesn't struggle that the degree that has struggled but there's inconsistency there so it's about getting him in a user-friendly scheme one that has a very defined gap assignment for him like a ski. Mike Dallas for example where the defensive linemen often shoot a specific and not often. They always shoot a specific. App in the linebackers play accordingly. Hardwired in so in other words we know before. The ball snapped at that at defensive tackle essays. Let's say any picking defensive tackle. He's GonNa wind up in the gap but he's going to go attack the JAP linebacker. You go take that big at that. He just vacated that's the way you WanNa play with Davis as opposed to. Hey Davis Watch. How the defensive tackle plays that be gap but if you sense that. He's getting driven into the gap. Go help the big gap. Otherwise you've got the gap. That's a very different style of football. So attack oriented one gap defense. That's where Jared Davis would be at his best in. And then the discussion is what do you do with him in nickel because he was not comfortable very early in his career in passing situations and he was eventually taken off the field and pass situations. I think it was the end of his rookie season. He's improved a lot there but he's still not innately that kind of player so he's probably better as a blitzer studies explosive that challenges teams at run. Those one gap schemes like Dallas's are not typically the teams at blitz because those one gap schemes require high level. Big Time Defensive Lineman so you pass rushers built in. Why would you spend the resources on blitzing? If you've got the four-man brush so his first. Basically JERE DAVIS FIRST AND SECOND DOWN ATTRIBUTES. Don't match his third down attributes. And that's part of the problem. You have with him and that's going to depress his market value because they were going to be a lot of teams that just don't seem as an ideal fit in their system. Yeah I was GONNA say it's tough to find a home for him in that case someone will though he he is a top ten explosive talent in terms of just pure physical ability. There are not ten linebackers in the NFL. That outrank him there. So someone will try it. It's just a matter of WHO and how. What kind of loosely. What kind of odds would you put on him? Having a long term future with Matt Patricia in Detroit Thirty Five to forty percent. Yes and then the rest of it sixty sixty five or sitting. No I'm not overly optimistic. I think what Patricia is saying is is true and they mean that and they did not draft the linebacker this year so they did say Jamie Collins Collins. You could see as a defensive end in their scheme. He's not a by any stretch classic defensive end but he would line up on the edge. Davis will always lineup off the ball. If it's a rundown situation collins can play on the ball off the ball and run situation so they do have room for him still. But I'm not I'm not overly optimistic. Okay now I'm surprised you gave me an actual percentage. You never do that. Do I not do that. Yeah it's not. Is it a lie for like I talk like that quite often? Yeah not know. It seems tasty to ask me more. Jerry Davis Ask me about Jerry Davis. It seems a little bit Achey. But that's all right. Yeah I don't I I'll say this. I would be annoyed if somebody tweeted. A headline Benoy says thirty five percent. Share Davis stays. So maybe. Maybe maybe you're right. Maybe I did go a different direction there. Yeah I will say though That would be a terrible headline. I don't know who's really Coming we'll how that works because I did just say that. But if I saw that in a headline it would have such a different energy and connotation it would it would really really pissed me off. Yeah no I know what you're saying you you. You backed off it enough with the range. It's a Nice Range. It just means you're on the pessimistic side. Well here's the headline would not have taken to account what we said about Davis's first and second down attributes the scheme fit how you find that it would just be the headline so we've which basically make it sound like you're saying Jared Davis a thirty five percent good players just not a good enough player. That's what it would sound like. That's why it would make me mad all I know I'm not going to another percentage. I can tell you that because we're already making me on easy right here. All I know is that we are really upset with that. Hypothetical Headline Writer. He's a year from US or she. All right let's go to. Let's go to Atlanta. They got two of these guys who were Defensive ends both would been do around ten million on the fifth year option. Charles Harris. Obviously you know He. He was draft the dolphins he was traded to Atlanta for a late round. Pick NOT NO. One was surprised that his option was not picked up tank. Mckinley was I guess you could call it a little bit more of your a coin flip. Maybe a little less than a coin flip. May We'll talk about percentages with the what we thought it would have been. But the percentage now is zero percent. He did not have his fifth year. Option picked up but Here we have Charles Harris intact McKinley. Obviously Harris's something of reclamation project you know we'll see I mean they're not really going to invest that much in him though sort of see if they just magically unlock him Mckinley though they just It just hasn't worked out. He was a guy who You know you would think if you're in edge rusher coming out into the league like this is. This is the kind of defense you'd want to be in just sort of the get after the quarterback type of defense just hasn't worked out for him. It just hasn't been quite enough it. We haven't you see how he was drafted where he was. You can see the traits. There have been times that he has had dominant snaps. It just has not been often consistently enough and I still think he would be better as interior Russia than Ed rush. I don't know if he's quite bendable in quick enough to consistently come off the edge. Let's say you need on one to ten scale. You need level seven or eight speed and Ben Debility. Mckinney's probably about a six. To a six point. Five in that relative sense he's not appear interior rusher either but I think he could develop into that if somebody wanted to make him a fulltime nickel defensive tackle as far as what to do with him on on First. And second down really. It's I don- 'cause defensive tackles play on second down now. Nichole but I just don't know where he would be in your scheme and that's why that's why. Atlanta's has not brought him back or they're not planning on bringing him back long-term Charles Harris and anything maybe lightning in a bottle. Ab LIGHTNING IN A and. That's that's what that is and they had room. I mean it's their depth chart. They really don't have a time of pass. Rusher Stephen Means is a pretty good pass rusher. And that's another guy who's better defensive tackle than defensive end He's a good pass. Rusher in terms of depth other than that. They don't have a pure pass rusher on the bench. So that's why Charles Harris is here. Yeah he has a really nice spin move. He didn't college. That's that's all it takes for me is seeing a guy with a nice spin move in. I automatically think he is The Yeah it's funny you say because there are some analysts. That probably DEUCE. It's hard to. It's hard to forget a spin move when a spin move works really well. You're never going to forget that. The Guy did it even if he's only doing it once every three or four weeks and so then you th once once you do one. Good spin move. You've got a nice spin move for life. That's how people see that you are. You are the spin move guy last last guy here. Are you know one other thing? This whole fifth year option thing that the league came up with has been perfect because tack McKinley if the system were flawed teams could use these fifth year. Options to kind of squat on a player or head. You're saying they'll sure why not tack. Mckinley would have gotten the fifth year option. He is he has not been a bust per se. He's just right up on that edge and he's barely on the wrong side of it. These fifth year options are really tell tells teams. If if you're good enough you have if you're not you don't and there hasn't been a lot of guys that have crossed over the closest would be Jack. Conklin DID NOT GET HIS FIFTH YEAR OPTION. Tennessee and then had a pretty good season a year. Four wound up becoming an expensive free agent. But Jack Conklin also erupted in year for. We've got a lot better mechanics got better and it became more valuable. He didn't deserve not even close to have his fifth year option picked up after his first three seasons. So I don't know if there's been an and maybe our listeners would want to send us a tweet about it if if I'm forgetting anyone I don't think there's been a guy head. Had this fifth year option picked up that people would mostly say didn't deserve it don't don't complement the rookie. Wage scale Andy. Young nailed it with the fifth year. Option MAIL IT WAS. I promise Anthony before the show. I would not go on my the rookie. Wage scale is is dumb rant and I won't do it We'll get to the last guy and then we'll we'll finish this show but you know that was like Andy that was like an I. I like an episode of Law and order where One of the counselors brings up a subject with with his witness that he wouldn't supposed to bring up. And then the on the cross examine they go after the witness for that and then the council. I brought up was like no no no I object. You can't do that. And then the judge is like you. Open the door counselor. Well I wasn't thinking fifth year option. Turns ROOKIES GUY? Certainly the piece of the rookie wage scale. So yeah I do like the rookie wage scale. It's the worst. We don't have enough. Time for your. I'm sorry that you can't share your side of it. We don't have the time but I know I just love it. When teams are forced to tell you what they really think and usually you can decipher that by watching the film teams. Tell you how they feel about players by what you see them on film if a guy's not asked to do something. There's a reason for that. The reason is not because all the coaches didn't think of it. It's so you can always tell or almost always thoat teams stink by what they do. But you have to read between the lines in order to do that. The fifth year option. There's no reading between the lines. It's right there on the line. Here's what we think of the guy and I just find that kind of fun It's refreshing. He's not Reuben foster last guy. There's there's I mean look I. It's IT'S I. It seems kind of counter intuitive. Say there's not a whole lot to discuss about ruin foster here Obviously just spectacular talent. He he was great early on in San Francisco. There was a domestic violence charge. Accusation was dropped Eventually after after he signed with Washington or I should say Washington picked him up after the forty niners. Let him go But he.

"Trubisky right now but Just just saying there's there's hope there's it'll this'll be a really interesting quarterback battle this off season. This is feels like a true fifty fifty battle. Trubisky verse foles. Yeah Yeah and just because of the stuff we we've talked about I just I. I really think it's going to be false. I think the fact that you can run some of your offense with Foale's that you can't run with trubisky even after trubisky's been there for Well he's been in this offense for two seasons. I think that just tips the scales toward toward foles and to be perfectly honest. Panic isn't the right word but there has to be an urgency with the bears because when you have assembled the defense like they have. It's tough to keep that together. It's it's tough to You know we we saw with Denver. Broncos went from a defense that could absolutely carry that team for for Caesar to and now. They're they're so good but you know they they can't win you games like they did and it feels like. That's Kinda what the bears were in two thousand eighteen and You know the turnovers fell off in two thousand nineteen and that's in part why the team fell off and Yeah and and now. We're we're sitting here and has the window closed on the chance. You have to win a championship on your defense. Yeah it's not. The defense was a couple of years ago. Now it's still a high high and defense especially if Jalen Johnson is a rookie as well. You Know Kyle. Fuller's tremendous cornerback. Obviously Khalil Mack Akiem Hicks and he's healthy is top probably top five in two year. Defensive Lineman certainly top ten Roquan Smith. Expect to be better in the next year. So it's a star studded defense and Eddie Jackson Star Safety. It's a star studded defense a couple years ago it was star studded incredibly solid and sound at the regular position the Non Star positions. I don't know if you can say that. Now at some of those non star positions questions about Jalen Johnson as a number two corners unproven. Dion Bush a Safety D. Line Depths. Not Quite what it was before they need more from the offense and even then a few years ago. They needed more from the offense. It's not like they won the NFC championship or anything with that defense. Yeah Yup yeah the and and that I talk about turnovers lots They led the League in twenty eighteen and they fell to the middle of the pack in two thousand nineteen and that That makes a difference when you're not stealing possession to every game one thing to also keep in this offense if added some speed at the wide receiver position and Ted Ginn is around. He can still run just pure speedster for the most part. He's become more than that but you're signing him for his speed at Darnell Moody the Fifth Round. Pick had a good forty time. I don't know how the bears see forty times some teams I think probably respect them and other teams and I would subscribe to. This thought. They might see it as totally irrelevant. Because there's nobody guarding you. You're not thinking about anything. You're not actually even wearing football equipment. You not worried about tracking a ball but you know Mooney on papers a speed guy so a little bit more speed on offense and they have Cordeiro Patterson still all right. Well let's Let's go on to the next guy here. This is a Solomon Thomas. Who of course the the forty niners mbare swapped the second and third picks. The forty niners moved down to three took. Solomon Thomas Thomas would have been do about Fifteen point two million on the fifth year option in twenty twenty one. He does not get that. Obviously he's a guy who he he just hasn't really broken through and the question now is when when you look at how this How this defense is stacked up. Not Forest Buckner Yvonne Kim Law obviously comes in and and sort of you know. There's there's one answer defensive tackle Thomas who sort of came in as a guy who people saw as early down end third down you kick them inside as a pass rusher it. It just hasn't really worked out and it's I guess it's been especially disappointing because they've had a lot of good guys around him and you figure that sort of create some opportunities for him and he's been all right but you just obviously has not been he's not been a high first round pick type of producer and he certainly not hasn't produced to the point where you're gonNA invest in the mid teens as far as in annual contract so we're just wanting to say upfront about him is he consistently stands out on film for his effort and I think the niners really like him personally and not in the sense. I always a nice guy which I think a lot of people believe he is no he is he. I think he's a buy-in guy. He is a team guy in the right sense. So it's not like the effort hasn't been there and it's not it's not like it's been an utter failure. He just has not lived up to. Where was he drafted number? Three overall the challenge for Thomas. That will always be there. It has been there so far is. He's not a very long bodied guy. He's in specialty. Put a mix the deforest buckner or Eric Garner state. He looks downright squatty but he's not long he doesn't play. Long arms are not long so in that case you have to be. That's a hard one to compensate for man thinking even as going to have to be an Aaron Donald Type. Not Saying you have to be of that. Might be the most explosive guy ever has spot. But you have to win with your burst. Even Donald's along body as not tall but he plays long. Thomas just does not play long and that cannot be coached into a guy not at this point that maybe a few mechanical adjustments. But that's what he is. And so then the discussions were does he fit. And he's not a natural defensive end for that reason and he hasn't been quite effective enough as a three techniques. So you're talking about a rotational guy and I think he does need to be in this kind of Schema. Four three one gap scheme. I don't know where you would play him in a three four or even just those schemes that have two outside linebackers on the ball here not usually three fours. But that's how they they play out you know he would not make sense in Pittsburgh scheme for example. Yeah it's it's tough because you just look around and they're all high for trump picnic boza. Eric Arm said the forest buckner. But you just look at what they were able to do in the scheme. Even before last year you know even twenty eighteen these these guys Both obviously it was not there yet but They were. They were all good players in this Know in the sort of You know version of Robert Solid Hawks style seem here. But it just hasn't just hasn't clicked for Thomas and and I know I know there's really any reason to think it will well. There was a report not long ago. That both sides the niners and Thomas are interested in maintaining and continuing relationship. They just have to figure out the right price and as you said the the cost for him. A Top. Ten salary transition tag number basically. That's a non nonstarter So a lot might come down to how Thomas performs this season and one that you have to wonder about then is at some point. A guy who's not going to get franchise tag book can become a good player. Those are usually the guys you lose in free agency. Someone else will usually pay more for that. I'm not saying Thomas becomes that necessarily but if if he plays really well his agents probably going to tell them it behooves you to hit the open market so the niners want to continue the relationship with Thomas unless they if if if they don't do a deal before the end of this upcoming seen before the end of the two thousand twenty season that's going to be hard for him to stay in San Francisco. I think this is Jon. Wertheim if you like this show and Dr. Sports illustrated podcast. There's another show. We think you should check out. It's called against the rules against the rules. Bestselling author and journalist. Michael Lewis's searing look at fairness in every aspect of American life financial markets newsrooms sports arenas courts of law and more in season. Two now in full swing. He examined the role of coaches in society. It wasn't that long ago that we only had coaches and sports. Now they're everywhere. There are life coaches and death coaches. You can hire a coach to improve your executive skills. Your Online Dating Performance Charisma but coaching is also become an odd source of unfairness. Just look around and ask yourself who has access to these coaches and the edge they provide and who doesn't in. What does that mean for? All of us subscribed to against the rules and podcasts. Or wherever you listen brought to you by Pushkin Industries. All right let's Let's move down. We are going outside the top ten now to these guys Were GonNa be owed a little bit less on their fifth year options I guys Hassan Rhetoric He he would have been do ten million Assume he was on the LINEBACKER Fifth year option here Yeah I mean it they just in Arizona. They really haven't figured out what they want. Rettig to be any was a guy who came to the League at Temple as sort of a boy look at all the different things you can do these this guy. He can play off the ball. You can yell. He can rush off the edge and it seems like he just hasn't really found home doing either. Yeah they tried everything and as a result. Who's become nothing and it's he has not been on the field and run situations recently. They took them off and they played them in passing situations. He is incredibly explosive. His awareness as a run defender especially as is spotty. And you can even probably spotty at best times so okay. Let's you know he's playing a different position he did not. He was an on the ball edge type of defender primarily coming out of college. So there's already been adjustment period. It's been some different schemes that he's been in an Arizona has not been perfect conditions for them so then the discussion becomes well. What kind of skiing can we put them in? And what role can we give him? Because you get the sense it needs to be specifically defined and highly defined for him one guy that jumps to mind and they're different types of players but we're going to use it as an example of how you can help a guy. Become great is tomorrow. Davis in New Orleans has become a top five linebacker in a role where he's basically on passing downs. He's basically a blitzer or a often blitzer or he's some kind of free defender where it's just go. Get The ball tomorrow. That's the plan. And I think radic would really thrive in a situation where you just have to ask them to be instinctive rather than process information of a difference is tomorrow Davis equality run defenders. Well he does not struggle. I'd identifying run. Plays like wreck does but anymore Gary so many teams play dime personnel. You would think one of the teams that likes to do it out of what we think is three four personnel. Texans who are kind of a three four defense or the Patriots. They have all these mid range body size guys. These two hundred and fifty pound long guys are not quite linebackers or not quite defensive Lineman but they play on your nickel and dime situations at dolphins had a lot of them last year as well. They weren't great players. But the body types you that might be something you would consider with..

"fifth year" Discussed on The MMQB NFL Podcast

"Monday will do the second half hour. We're GONNA look at the thirteen players. Who had their fifth year options decline? Those are the two thousand seventeen first rounders who The teams that Turnley had them just sort of decided they were not going to invest in them for that one more season so we're going to split up. Nfc AFC arena start with the NFC. This week and with that I welcome our special guests. Andy Bhanot joins us to break down the present and the future for some of these guys who are I mean look not all these guys you look at it and say well. This guy's a bus a lot of these guys jury's still out on him and I was excited when you suggested this for the topic of the show. I think there are a lot of directions. You can go with these kind of conversations about some of these guys. Yeah we're we`re. We're going to do this. We're going to basically go down draft order here and again. Nfc this week. We got six of them this week. And then we got Next week we'll have the AFC guys like Leonard Fournette me cooker. Some interesting is there but I mean you know you look at this list and You know a guy like Charles Harris who has already been treated for elite round draft. Pick from Miami to Atlanta and kind of on that Some these guys. Jared Davis is really interesting Reuben. Foster still an interesting player. We didn't expect they pick up the option because of the injury issues. He's had but We Are we're GONNA start our top here and we can start with Mitchell trubisky now. Trubisky obviously the second overall pick of the two thousand seventeen draft the guys in the top ten their fifth year option is for the basically the transition tag value. If you're outside the top ten it's the average of three through twenty five at your position. The the third highest guy twenty-fifth highs bay guide the average of three hundred twenty five. That's get paid So trubisky's number for fifth year. Twenty twenty one. He would have made about twenty four point eight million Understand that the bears don't want to invest that right now and on top of that. If let's say trubisky has a breakout season in two thousand twenty they wanNA keep them if they franchise tag after the season the numbers not that much bigger for trubisky so but they declined to twenty four point eight. We Know Nick. Foles is in there and quite frankly. We've discussed this. Andy foles is probably the favorite might be a slight favorite. But but I'd say foles is probably the favorite to be the quarterback in Chicago this year. That said let's just look at. It is if the trubisky was going to be under center for them to season one thing. You've seen the bears. Do this off season is I mean you know. Everyone kind of laughed at it. I mean they loaded up on tight ends. They have a lot of tight ends and I not the type of thing where they brought in one guy to an already rich position group. They went out. They their first round draft pick was spent on coal command they These free agent signing was Jimmy Graham. They also signed Dimitrius Harris. Who has a history with Matt? Nagy there so those are three tight ends right there. That's that's the math there three ends. This is not an offense that puts three tight ends on the field very often. You would think. Maybe that's something they do going forward. Do you think do you think that's helpful for a guy like trubisky to sort of have all those tight ends on the field? Like what you saw with trubisky's not in the same quarterback stylistically but you know saw with Baltimore. I mean they had three touchdowns on the field of what they did and they had an expansive running. Game centered around it in their quarterbacks run threat. That's really not the bears. Offense trubisky has functional mobility but you're not designing a slew of run. Plays Four Ham. The other thing is the ravens are uniquely. 'cause traded Hayden Hers But last year. They were flexible tight. Internet Mark Andrews is basically a big Slot Receiver Forum in Hayden hearst viable receiving threat. You could argue that Jimmy. Graham and CO commit fit that same description there but what we're talking about overall gear. I don't know if it's a dynamic enough or significant enough package that it would influence how you see your offense. Let's say Matt. Nagy says we wanted to a lot more three tight end this year. Still not part of their foundation. If you ask Matt Nagy What Are you about those? Even if they do more three tight and they're going to be. I mean the Ravens in Tennessee led the league last year at eleven percent of their snaps. We're three tight end. The Ravens had twenty two personnel. A lot of the times and could argue with. Nick Boils fullback or tied in. The point is unless you have an expansive running game. It's really really in fact. Uk It's impossible to justify putting three tight ends on the field on any sort of regular basis. I was GONNA say Mitchell trubisky by the way career. One Hundred Twenty six point three rating with three Titan tight ends on the field Andy on guessing thirteen asses and a lot of them near the goal. Line game guessing so low sample size and rating thing gets skewed because of the value of touchdowns in the. Yeah but listen. The Titans did a nice job with last season guys. That can do everything. Though you have to have guys who can be blockers and receivers and the bears are going for that but my gas Gerry. Because really the key guy were talking about. Dimitrius Harris Reno a commit will be or what they expect them to be. He's kind of a classic tight end. We know Jimmy grams receiving tight end and every team plays with two tight ends. And so. That's that's part of the idea what we're really discussing his will dimitrius. Errors have a significant role with the bears. This season and you can make the argument. Either way I thought Harris was a really good player in Kansas City. He did not become much of a factor in Cleveland. But by the way that was another thing that really tried to do three tight end stuff at times. It never quite took full hold. I can also argue that Harris here because Matt. Nagy just want someone in the room who knows the system in those the offense and that's GonNa make it easier to bring along the new guys Jimmy Graham and coal combat. What so back to Trubisky just overall. If he's on this year what do you do to make his life easier this point because we saw early on in the twenty thousand season? Nagy's first season. The offense is really working. I don't know if it was just a matter of team. Sort of catching up to it. You know we we discussed. It's kind of a lot of bells and whistles before the snap and then Kinda simplistic afterward. And then I mean look you could probably like draw a line of demarcation around like the halfway point in two thousand eighteen season and it's really all downhill since then and and by the end of last year. It looked like he was just just wholly uncomfortable with what he was seeing out on the field. He's at this point. He is not a natural anticipatory field reader. I think he does the things kind of one at a time. And he's he does have probably see it before he can pull the trigger on a lot of designs. That's a discussion of canvas. Get cleaned up as he has more experience because remember only had twelve games starting experience coming out of North Carolina. So you know he really year four. It's make or break of course but you could say that may be get improved experience. He's probably is what he is a lot of people in the NFL would say to me the bigger problem though Gary is let's say even if he is what he is as a field. Let's say you can get better as a field reader? I don't know if he's consistently accurate enough to run the kind of offense that you would want to run with him given his skill set. You know we talk all the time about Cam. Newton Josh Allen. They're not innately accurate passers. But they're unique specimens. They're big stallion. Quarterbacks that can really push the ball a certain parts of the field that other guys don't have the arm to attack and their their weapons in the running game trubisky. Not Either of those thinks. He's a more traditional all around type of quarterback which means if you treatment is said very plainly and it makes perfect sense. If you can't put the ball exactly where you want it nothing else matters in the NFL for a quarterback. It doesn't matter how good you how good you are running around. It doesn't matter how well you read the field if you can't put the ball exactly where you want it on a regular basis. I do Kinda wonder if the accuracy issues are just And I think every quarterback who has accurate at accuracy issues that it's tied to Basically a lack of comfort ability. With with what you're seeing out there. And then he gets uncomfortable because his mechanics breakdown. There's kind of undertow panic to his plays. Yeah I mean you know like like the the metaphor I always give is like if you're playing darts and you're throwing a DART board. That's that's one thing. If you feel like you're throwing it. Just the the bulls eye that That is psychologically another thing for a for a fine athlete who was Playing darts in a bar but yeah as far as it goes like I just. I wonder if you could do something where he just felt comfortable enough where I mean. Maybe it's just like I mean. Maybe maybe it's just a lot of one read stuff. Maybe the second reheat is. He's tucking the ball and running. We have seen him. And I'm not GonNa sit here and say he's in the class of of a of Lamar and Cam Newton Josh Allen. But he's done some decent self with his legs. You saw it in two thousand eighteen. You saw it less last year. That might have had with the separated non throwing shoulder. They might have scaled that back. A little bit but It seems like it's an option for him. It is but I don't think it's an option for the coaching staff. The guys at you do the one read and then take off. Or let's really simplify the offense. It's for guys who were a probably a little bit more. Purely physically talented either faster guys as runners or high an armed talented trubisky has a good arnold. It's not painted like he's like he's not but you do it for special players who are young and you have reasonably. We'll get better. I can't think of a quarterback in his fifth or sixth season even in his fourth trubisky. Where that would be acceptable offense to run unless you are just immensely town. I mean and even then you know at some point you have to be able to be a full field. Reader coaches are not going to let their offense stay neutered for several years. They don't have the job security for that all right well if If we see him on the field this year certainly a something of a make or break season for Trubisky as far as is Chicago. Future goes And again we've disgusted. There've been guys who have been really bad in the first couple of seasons who have who have been broken out after that drew brees is a guy we brought up as was probably the worst starting quarterback and football's first few seasons and then really had that breakout years third year. I mean that. That's that's why they drafted Philip rivers there to take over the reins from a very bad drew. Brees on Sunday drew brees great Probably probably not the projection. You'd have for Mitchell..

"fifth year" Discussed on NFL: Move the Sticks with Daniel Jeremiah & Bucky Brooks

"We've seen other other teams decide to extend their first round players before they even have to worry about picking up the option. So that this year with Christian McCaffrey. Who was the eighth overall? Pick who was extended and the panthers then didn't have to worry about picking up or declining the option which they obviously would have picked up if they didn't have the extension so let's dig into some of these players here mentioned starting at the top bucky miles. Hold on let. Let's talk like just coming from a a community standpoint. The reason why the fifth year option pickup or the client is a big deal is because in most counting circles people say it takes three to four years to really determine if a player can play really three years because three years. We'll give you forty eight games to be able to look at a player. See how he grows in your system see if he is being able to be a viable contributor. Meaning the thought is if you tear the first round meaning in the top ten the expectation guys drafted in the top ten if you have a top ten greed. You're expected to be guy that kind of falls loosely in the top five or top ten of your position throughout the League at that position. Meaning you should be a high end player at your respective position as we cross reference your talents all around the league from ten to thirty two the expectation. You expect those guys to be solid starters and key contributors meaning. They should be on the field. Seventy seventy five percent of the time if they're rotational players but they should be start as you expect them to be starting lineup. You expect them to start making ways and really kind of solidified themselves as foundational pieces to your franchise and so when you're making these decisions on the option year. A lot of it is. Do we view this player as a foundational piece? Like we can't live without this player. This player has so much value that we have to keep him as a core player as part of a nucleus that is eventually going to put us in a position to win championships and so when teams are making these assessments when they turned down the opportunity to extend them in some way it is a failure it means either. The player didn't work. The SYSTEM DIDN'T FIT. The player is but it's an acknowledgment of A. We might have got this wrong for a number of circumstances and instead of extending trying to make us right. We're just going to move on and see if we can find another player that can give us what we were looking for the position. Yeah and I'm glad you set the table that way that's That's an important perspective. Have as you kind of assess some of these guys that were picked up or or decline here. As I mentioned this is the myles Garrett draft number one overall this look. This was a no brainer pickup for the Cleveland Browns You don't pass up on edge rusher talent that that's why they took him number one overall. Despite what happened at the end of last year I think all can expect myles. Garrett to return to some sort of dominant dej rushing form in which he had for the last couple of seasons. That was that was the no brainer. Right now the next the next four players of that top five I mean. Wow Wow four of the top five players picked in the twenty seventeen. Nfl draft had their options. That means a team again. For whatever reason deciding that they wanted to forfeit the opportunity to keep them under control for a fifth year. That's Mitchell trubisky with the bears traded up one spot with the forty niners to select it number two that Solomon Thomas with the forty niners their number three John. Lynch is I pick as a general manager Leonard Fournette running back from the Jaguars who just had a serious roller coaster type career with the jags and then Corey Davis which was a bit of a surprise. I think to a lot of us. There ended up going number five to the Tennessee Titans. So let's start right there with that. Cluster of players. And then I guess we can kind of role in for the forty niners fact. They came back into the first round and Got Reuben foster their ended up having to cut him for the off. The field issues redskins picked him up his option declined. Also so just to kind of bring that full circle but what sticks out to you there but that top five bucks man. What sticks out to me about this draft in general is just how all over the place we were when it came to those prospects myles. Garrett was a talent I think most people could agree. Mccue talent super explosive. Athlete has some production out. Still say like he was probably drafted on his athleticism more so than his playing ability because he's such a remarkable athlete and Freak Athlete. It is is But it worked out Mitchell trubisky. Bisky is a tough one because Mitchell trubisky has earned a pro bowl ed elation. He's been to a global. He's missed selected for that and people can say as a fans vote or whatever you still You get that the the tough thing and why he is so closely. Scrutinize is because the bears not only moved to get him but they bypass the opportunity to get to Shawn Watson and later Patrick Mahomes. Oh by the way things were picked up you picked and I think the big thing is like the Pat Mahomes thing because I think Panchmahal is actually a hard evaluation because he was talented but he was so i. Guess Sandlot freestyle in his play that it was kind of hard to see how he's going to play because we hadn't really seen a player that came that came into the league with a game like that translate and have Big Time Success. Does Shawn Watson was the one for me. That was tough because this Shawn Watson Mitch. Trubisky played in the same conference against the same players to Shawn Watson not only lead his team to conference championships but he clearly outplayed. Mitchell trubisky was a better player and so for the bears to see something that most of the outside world didn't see that was tough and so because of that he has come under. So much scrutiny. The scrutiny may even exceed how bad he may have performed based on expectation. But it's hard for people to look at him and look into Shawn Watson and Pat Mahomes and say that he is in their same class that quarterback that quarterback draft is a tough one for bears fans to stomach. No question but again. You're right about the Patrick mahomes thing. I don't think anyone mocks or talked about the chiefs flying up from the back of the draft to come up to the tenth spot and take Patrick Mahomes. So you know. It's tough to say all the bears go to take too well yet. They could've but nobody was no-one. No-one knew right in going back. I I'm looking at this thing. That back at the time so I wrote a thing on all pro's pro bowlers stars and on that list there is no pet. Hey I don't have homes listed in pro. I don't have them listed as a pro bowl about two two guys added to position listed. We're Shawn Watson. Had Mitchell trubisky at the bottom of that list so I was like a is a huge miss only and I think the thing With Pat Mahomes. I have notes from scouts that talked to like man to talent is immense but good luck fixing them. Other guys saying man. The talent is crazy like whatever but how would want to draft him and so like. I don't think anybody new and a lot of it. Now is a perfect storm. He went to the right situation with the right coach who was able to tap into his creativity without having to put them on the field early. And then it just were in fabulous player. And I'm not saying that he couldn't do it in other circumstances. Sure but for us. Our imagination didn't allow us to see him as an MVP in Super Bowl win in three years. We just couldn't see that like I mean anyone who says they could see that he would do all these things I mean. I challenged them on what they saw. How anybody could see it translating like that. Yeah I think we could make the argument that Solomon Thomas. Actually had one of his better years as a pro this last year in a rotational role though for the forty niners. And that's probably not something that that the for whatever. That number is for Sally. A number at the fifth year probably not worth it as a rotational player. Right and for a guy that was drafted third overall the whatever like when you drafted and that ranger expected to be to be a takeover player and he hasn't shown the ability takeover. He's been a good player. Not a great player and at that that That where he was taking you expect them to be a great a dominant player like a transcendent type player. He just hasn't been that He EOS coming off a solid year. But if he's still playing import as part of a rotation it's hard to justify paying him what you have to pay them on the fifth year option. Yeah and again you know the forty niners have done pretty well up front since that draft pick. I mean they had you know Eric Armstead deforest Buckner at that point. We were Kinda surprised you know. Like oh wow. Do they go defensive? Line for the third straight year. They ended up doing it and it doesn't end up working out but it does worked out with Nick. Bosa this last year and then perhaps with Japan Kim law this coming year so the last one here that I want to get to as a singular item of the top five is Leonard for net because You know it's just it's a little bit of a mystery to me. He was such a dominant college football player when he was healthy. And I think you could say the same in the NFL when he was healthy and he was right with himself with the team with the offense with the philosophy was a good. It was a good deal for the Jacksonville. Jaguars and ten years is ten games his rookie year. It five a couple more than five hundred yard games. He had one hundred yard game in the playoffs. He was a big part of the offense. He limited the exposure of Blake bortles. And the jags made a run in the playoffs. And and that's what kind of thing you started to expect. And then whatever reason. He ran sideways with Tom. Coughlin and with coaching staff and he had suspensions. And it's all this stuff that I didn't. We didn't talk about a lot leading up to draft as possibily like is this a red flag character. We just I never heard that leading up to the draft and so as a shock to see it it is a shock to see it and I think if we go back and we look at his collegiate career. I think you could probably make the argument that his freshman season at Lsu might have been his best season in terms. Yeah how impactful he was and because he was a right now star. I mean you're captivated by the way to the play toughness. Eddie played how he did the dirty work and all of those things he was. He looked like a much boys when it came to to play that their freshman year. I'm going back. I'm looking at. The numbers actually wasn't a freshman sophomore year. He went for nine thousand nine hundred yards. My Gosh he went for ninety nine hundred and fifty yards and and in his junior year he only had a hundred and forty three yards. And or something hurt. He played seven games. He was her durability things came up and we kind of gave them a bit of a hall pass. But you know what's about that? We did the same thing with Christian McCaffrey. Because Chris McCaffrey's last year was not his best year sophomore year..

"fifth year" Discussed on NFL: Move the Sticks with Daniel Jeremiah & Bucky Brooks

"Hey what's going on everybody? Welcome to another edition of the move. The sticks podcast. I'm right Lewis in four. Dj Today alongside my Guy Bucky Brooks Bucky. What's happened to man we are? We're working our way further and further away from the two thousand twenty. Nfl draft which means we are closer and closer to the twenty twenty one nfl draft. That seems weird. To say doesn't that's preferred to look at it like look. Twenty is in the rear view right through the windshield and man. Twenty twenty two twenty one. Yeah talk about quarterbacks and excitement and guys and all of that other stuff like we have plenty of time to talk about it this summer but it looks like it will be very easy to keep listeners. Engaged with quarterbacks talk about next season yeah no question and I think I speak for just about everyone planet earth. We cannot wait to get rid of twenty twenty as fast as we is has been one heck of a year man and we're still right in the midst of it but we're GonNa make the best of it here and look at. It also turns out to be a year in which we unfortunately one of the legends. Not just of the NFL but of the game of Football Don Shula passing away this week. The coach of the Miami Dolphins and guided them the only perfect season we've ever seen in. Nfl history seventeen in NFL title Super Bowl Championship and the Patriarch Bucky of the first family of football coaches. Both of Don's sons Dave and Mike both coach and super bowl his dave son. Chris has coached in a super bowl. They've had generations of Shula coach in a super bowl. I mean this is a family unlike unlike any other that we've seen in the NFL and And we lost a great man and a great coach and the stories have been pouring in the tributes have been pouring in bucket you entered the league and and Kinda right in the midst of of the Don Shula Heyday there. Yeah it was crazy about it. I actually have a a game ball somewhere in garage. Maybe my parents house where I fumble recovery was actually against the Miami Dolphins special teams back to the Miami Dolphins and Don. Shula three things that come to mind excellence. Perfect season most wins of any. Nfl Coach in history. I think about consistency. Thirty three seasons on the sideline only two losing seasons source wanting to be excellent of. But it's another thing to be consistently in the hunt always Kinda in range to be able to compete for the title. And then the last thing is adaptability the adaptability that he displayed going from Baltimore whereas pounded with those players. Running the ball. Earl Merle Come into Miami. Then is the Miami Powell machine. Larry CSONKA Chik Mercury. Morris. You had two quarterbacks and Bob Greasy and being able to have the the no name defense moving onto the killer bees when I was like a like I wasn't even a teenage maybe ten eleven twelve then changing the style with Dan Marino. And those guys and throwing it all over the yard. Good coaches put players over system and Don Shula was the master of being able to assess the situation and then put in a scheme that enabled his guys to play at his best. So excellent adaptability insists those things come to mind when I think about don show man. That's a great way to put it and like I. I unfortunately never had a chance to meet Don. But I've met his Dave who obviously we know as a coach with his dad and Miami Through some of the super bowls and then went on to coach the Cincinnati. Bengals is now the wide receivers coach. Believe at Dartmouth with buddy evens. Got Back into coaching in the last couple of and you can see the type of person that Don Shula was by by meeting the other members of his family. I think a man that was built for others that love to engage others and an organiser was a guy who brought people together talking about Dave here. I saw him every summer at the manning passing academy and I just I loved being around him he loved. He loved coaching wide receivers. You Love Coaching the young kids. I think that's probably why he got back into it. And I think everyone that Kinda came through there and had a chance to spend some time with David was better for it and then I had the chance to meet his son. Chris who kinda worked his way up was a graduate assistant. Mile will moderate Indiana under Kevin Wilson and then jumped into the league and ended up being an assistant position coach with the rams worked his way up to a full time assistant coach. Now with the Rams says the outside linebackers coach there for Sean McVeigh. So like he's just a a you know it's a family that understands what football is all about the understands what relationships are all about and I think that that is a credit to their the patriarch of that family and dawn and I think his legacy will obviously go on forever here in the NFL and in NFL circles and his thought highly of. I don't know anyone who does not think of Don Shula in the highest regard. So certainly our condolences to his family in thoughts. Go out to them as they as they mourn the loss of a great great man so with that guy. Let's let's move on here on the six podcast here and one of the bigger news. Items in the last couple of days was one eighty getting released by the Cincinnati Bengals Bucky. Obviously one one move that we expected little bit unexpected though to see him sign so quickly with a team in which he doesn't have a clear path to the starting job at least in the near term. It would seem so to two ways. You can look at this as a surprise one that well the cowboys got an actual another starting caliber backup quarterback and then the other piece of it is wonder Andy settled. I guess for that kind of role. Do you look at it. That way at all. No I don't I don't look at it as dead. I think there are a couple of things that are at play with the Dallas Cowboys. Making this move So often we we view the backup quarterback position. We don't necessarily give it the value that it needs because a lot of times if it goes down we just kind of throw away. The team's chances of being able to compete at a high level for the Dallas Cowboys. I think this is insurance. This is like insurance on your whole. No one wants to pay the premium but then when the House has a catastrophe you'd certainly want to cash in on the policy. The Dallas Cowboys. Were able to get something that you rarely able to get. That is a backup quarterback who can actually play regardless of what you think about Andy Dalton in the last couple of years to fall out for the Cincinnati bengals kind of collapsing. The last three years the first five years of his NFL career he led to Bingos into the playoffs. He had the third most wins of any quarterback during that period The first five years starting quarterback and when he is surrounded by a very good supporting cast Andy Dawn absolutely came Wayne Games. When he's not he just doesn't have the talent to elevate an average squat without a playmakers on the outside and that is fine. I think in this situation what you have for the cowboys is insurance against Dak Prescott. Getting injured insurance against a long drawn out Hold out or or it's not even a holdout. Whatever he just doesn't show if he doesn't sign and come to camp on time and you have an opportunity to take a team that on paper looks very very talented and at least be very competitive team a team. That can win games in a short term. Stretch any dawn as a quarterback. You okay so I should clarify. I meant I wasn't surprised to see the cowboys. Make the move right. That's a little bit surprised to see Andy. Go that route now. Maybe that was the best deal that was out there and he wanted to sign quickly. You want to drag this out for his family in these uncertain times. Let's get in. Let's go go go back home to the state of Texas where he grew up in Katy Texas and played at Tcu and that that tells right sort of make sense right. I guess I just thought that he might have an opportunity to go to a place where a starting job was more in his grasp than like. Okay that gets hurt or doesn't come to camp on like I thought. Maybe you know maybe Jacksonville with Jay groome there. We thought that might be an opportunity right so anyway. So that part of it just surprised me from Andy's perspective a little bit. But I guess seeing the way that this is dragged out for guys like dragged out for Jaimes Winston still going for Cam Newton. Maybe we shouldn't be so surprised in and I. I think I think what Andy Did was took. The security of this deal is all on the table. Let's take it also. Let's understand WHO's coaching Mike McCarthy if I get a chance to get in there Mike McCarthy has enough experience. And how put me in a situation where I can look good? This good jumpstart the second part of my career as a starting quarterback we saw what happened with Teddy Bridgewater in New Orleans. Drew brees goes out for five games. Teddy Bridgewater gets stance and LO and behold. Teddy Bridgewater gets an opportunity to be a starting quarterback. Andy Dalton Agree Situation. In that vein. Dak Prescott has been durable. Yes missed start. He's been there just in case he gets hurt. They have a guy who can go in and for Andy standpoint man. What better way to do it into play at home? There's stability because already have a home there. I don't have to worry about like my kids. And changing and all of those things so it is a perfect situation for him to be able to jump in and step in and kind of like make the best of a basset yeah. I think you're right there so like once you dig in. You can kind of see the reasons why and so now the cowboys again this. This is a great opportunity for them to just kind of continue to stack that quarterback room in the event that they end up needing some of that depth there with Andy Dalton. All right so let's move on to one of the other big kind of topics these last couple of days which has been the fifth year option. Game which is due now overdue for the members of the two thousand seventeen draft class. The deadline was Monday for teams to decide whether they would pick up the fifth year option for those players which means the option year. Twenty twenty one right so they were drafted in seventeen. This is the myles Garrett number one overall year and then you play that seventeen. Eighteen nineteen twenty season the fifth year for all those first round picks is an option for the team to decide whether they want to pick up or decline that is then guaranteed for injury only so if a guy gets hurt and can't continue to play. He's on your books no matter what for twenty twenty one if you end up picking that up if you don't they're free agent unrestricted free agent in twenty twenty one right. After this season we saw that happened this past year with Jack Conklin and the titans. They declined to pick up his option after making him a top ten. Pick back in two thousand sixteen. He ends up having a decent year in his fourth year. After a couple of down once following his rookie season ends up signing a huge deal with the Cleveland browns. So having a team decline your option is not a death knell it can in fact be very lucrative windfall for you in fact that was the case for Jack Conklin. We've seen that..
